She is very scatter brained, gets off subject quickly, get frustrated with the students, very over dramatic, waives her arms wildly, yells at students for small things, not good at breaking things down. I left class very irritated every night. If you can avoid her or prepare yourself she is very odd.
I'm making a point of taking more of her classes. She's organized, knows her subject and teaches with enthusiasm. She is intense, no doubt about it, but that just means the class is never boring. Trust me, you will learn a lot in her Civil Law course.
Defiitely professional and knowledgeable, but mean and too dramatic.
I appreciate that she does not allow late-comers into class and sets high standards in her classroom. She knows her topic inside out, but there is so much to cover in her class there is very little give and take discussions in her class. She does not suffer fools gladly in the class, so keep your mouth shut, take notes, and you'll be fine.
Teacher was always on topic. Her upbringing in a legal family is what causes her to demand high things from students. She is always on par and whoever says otherwise is someone that didn't study. I busted it to get an A and I learned a lot during summer school. She is easy to follow if you read.
This teacher treats you as if you are in high school, she talks about proffesionalism and respect but she is very rude and over dramatic. No doubt she knows her subject but every class with her is a dreaded one.
She scared me at 1st but now I would have it no other way. You leave her class knowing the topic and knowing it well. If you are whining about her style you will never make it in the legal arena. I wish she taught more classes (advanced civil lit.)I will take every class she teaches whether I need it or not. I am not there to "get through".
While she knows her subject cold, this woman is self-centered, CONTROLLING, rude, mean, and ENJOYS nitpicking about things that just don't matter. It seems that while no one faults her knowledge, students are divided on whether or not they like her teaching style. I for one vote no on Brynelson.
Awesome professor. Her class is not easy but if you are serious about learning, she provides you with everything you need to succeed. Some students may not like her initially because of her animation, I quickly warmed up to her and appreciated her teaching style. I wish we had more professors like her in the Legal Assisting program at ARC.
I really enjoyed her class and am glad I am taking family law with her also. I appreciated her learning style and wish more professors would teach like she does. I learned everything she intended for me to learn and will be a better student because of it.
There is no doubt that this professor expects your full dedication, but there is also no doubt that she gives as much, if not more to her students. She is clear in explaining all assigments and truly prepares students for the "real world." The bottom line is that she is tough because she wants you to succeed. I would take any class she teaches.
Professor Brynelson: Is very professional, know's how to teach, a bit hard at times but all very concerned about the student. She is simply preparing for what is expected as a Paralegal. Her expectactions are high simply because she wants you to succeed. She follows her syllabus to a tee. Excellent Professor & willing to help in any situation
Her classes are unnecessarily difficult. A simple subject that can be taught by reading a textbook is taught as if it was a calculus exam. Oh, and she locks you out of class if youre late, exam day or not. Then drops you for missing a day because you were locked out of class.
Prof. B is awesome! She knows how to give a lecture and keep your attention. I never felt tired in her evening class because she was so interesting. I would take her anything I could. She is very exact but also willing to bend over backwards to make sure you understand. I feel much more prepared for an actual office setting with those expectations.
Do not take this class unless you have experience in the field. Extremely hard and instead of learning, you learn to memorize definitions, deadlines, terminology. You must be a good test taker(in person) in order to succeed in this class.
I was mistaken in the course number on my original comment. It was not 314 but L.A. 310, Civil Litigation. As stated before, either work in this field before taking the class or take a class similar at another college.
Brynelson cannot or will not accept meaningful questions about relevant subject matter. She drones on and on about her personal life at the expense of valuable class time, Assignments were totally brain dead and I was not challenged at all. Also, uses class time to indoctrinate students to her political agenda (far left)
This is a no nonsense class with a no nonsense teacher. She is a working lawyer, knows her stuff, and how to teach it. If you don't do well in her class, it's because you don't pay attention. Everything she teaches is in the books she uses. She expects you to be able to understand the terminology. This is a law class, expect to work!
Professor B is hard core and and seems intimidating at first but she's really fair and wants you to succeed. Law Office Management is super easy class to pass. The computer lab stuff was nice but boring as you could not work ahead. Professor seems to not pace the lesson to the best of her ability. Takes a long time at first and then rushes.
Amazing. She knows her stuff. books are very important and helpful. she is scary but its good keeps you going. don't miss class, do all assignment. quiz are very easy if you take notes, read and listen midterm is true and false and its all questions from the quiz. I promise you will learn a lot the way she teaches is on point you will learn something
Not going to lie, at the beginning of the semester Brynelson scared me a little bit with her tough around the edgesdoesn't sugar coat sh*t personality. However, as the semester has continued I have learned was an amazing professor she is. Her personality keeps the lecture moving forward but she will still answer any questions one may have.
She is rude and self center. She doesn't lecture, she reads the textbook verbatim and won't allow student participation. If you ask a question related to the subject she is reading, she gets upset and will brush you off. she needs to start teaching and stop being controlling. This class could be interesting if another professor was teaching it.
Prof B knows the material and intelligent so prepare to earn the grade you seek. Contracts I personally enjoyed taking. 400 points possible makes it tough but possible to recieve an A in the coarse. Read the chapters. Helpful hint: Use end of Ch. to guide reading. Show respect, be truthful and honest. Do just fine!
Professor Brynelson is amazing. She is a tough teacher but fair. I really liked her quizzes and there were not easy to pass as long as you read the chapter. What helped was to read the summary of the end of each chapter and the exercises. Make sure you are on time otherwise she will not let you in. She will prepare you for the real world.
I loved this class! Prof B is intimidating at first but she has great experience and insight. Definitely expect to read a LOT. The textbooks are a goldmine of info though, I know I'll keep mine and use them in the future. Just read and go to class and you'll be fine.
Great lecturer and communicator. She was clear as crystal about her expectations and deadlines. The textbooks for Civil Litigation are a great choice that you can even use once you work in the field (They are about $180 and you won't find them used; so, save up for them if you must.) I wish there were more teachers like her!
If you want to learn technical skills that will help you in the real world Prof Brynelson will prepare you for working in a law office. She is clear and concise in her assignments and grading, and not only does she have a wealth of professional knowledge in the field but also brings in guest speakers who work in the field to supplement.
This class is mandatory for those in the LA Program and it is completely relevant to working as an LA; Prof Brynelson gets you through the tediousness that is contract law, making it interesting and understandable along the way.
Prof. B is amazing! She is the only Professor who takes you through what is expected of a Legal Assistant. She has trained and supervised paralegals and has been a lawyer for 28 years. She teaches you as if she is training you to work in a law office and you will become a Rock Star at calendaring! She is so much fun!
This is the best legal professor at American River College. She is also one of the hardest. Professor Brynelson is a no-nonsense teacher. If you take her class be ready to follow along, stay on task and LEARN. If you need help she is very approachable, don't let her tough demeanor scare you off, she's actually very nice.
Prof. B teaches you how to write. Our final project was really challenging, but I never learned so much about the law and legal writing. I do not feel like any other teacher prepared us for actual legal work. The other classes just touch on things, but we put together an entire motion. Brynelson is the best. She even helped get me a job!
Great Class
Prof. B makes class super interesting and fun. I learned about what happened on Wall Street and the Great Recession and how to select a business model. I loved the group project because we really had to talk about business models. Prof. B has worked with all kinds of businesses, even a Las Vegas Casino! She's amazing!!!!
This professor may be good in person. I don't know. I took Legal Assisting online and would never do it again. It is basically a learn-it-yourself class. She doesn't provide enough information for you to even feel like you know what you're doing. You're expected to just act as if and you learn nothing that way. Very frustrating.
This is the second class I have taken by her, and she is ridiculous. Unfortunately, she was the only professor "teaching" legal research this semester. Each week she expects you to respond to 5 discussion boards, take a quiz, and submit an assignment. Fine. The problem is shes graded ONE assignment since the beginning of the school year. Dont take!
Prof. B told us this is first time she is teaching legal research online. She got sick at the beginning of the semester for like a month and got behind in the grading. But she let us know what was going on and I have her in another class and she was really sick. No other professor makes sure we are learning or has voluntary Saturday meetings.
I took this online class with Prof. B and it was the first completely online class she taught because Prof. Pavlovich retired. All I can say is, stop complaining.. If you are good and need a job, she will help you. The firms I interviewed with do not know any instructor in this program but her. It is not easy to get a job in Sacramento people!
Prof. B just got me in to law school. Take classes on-campus. She is the best!
Prof. B got me a job. She did not just tell me about a posting. I am graduating, and she personally recommended me and I got the job that will start in January after I graduate. I think that some of you do not know how hard it is to break in to this field. This is not a normal college program. This is to get a real job and make a living.
Professor Brynelson is an awesome instructor. She makes sure you understand the material and gives ample time to get the assignments done. She is accessible outside class. Be prepared to read and write in her classes because her lectures are based on the reading, but she also adds information that is not in the text. Silence your phones in class.
Prof. Brynelson is a Rockstar! I have learned a lot from her classes. She gives good feedback that usually helps me to understand assignments better. She is very helpful and a great support for her students. Thank you Prof. Brynelson.
This is my second class with Professor B. She is SUPER helpful if you need assistance. She offered Saturday classes despite people not taking advantage of it. Both of my courses were online and this summer Im taking a sit in class with her. I wish that she taught every course because she is thorough and has a lot of experience.
Prof. B is the most dedicated professor I have ever had. She always let me text her and helped me to look for jobs. She told me about jobs to apply for and even gave me a reference. I have never had a professor ask me if I was looking for a job when they already know I worked. She reached out to me and let me know that she believed in me.
Professor Brynelson is the best! While it's a lot of work, so is what you'll be doing in a law firm. She gets you ready for your job and genuinely cares about her students. She takes the time to answer any questions and is readily available to her students in and out of the classroom. Would definitely take her again!!! You're the best Professor B
I took this Advanced Legal Research & Writing (that also focused on e-discovery) over summer thinking that it would be a heavy work load & difficult. However, this class was FAIR, CONCISE, LIGHT WORK LOAD& KNOWLEDGEABLE. Prof Brynelson provided several guest speakers & I highly recommend this class & Prof.
Prof. B is an awesome professor and knows the legal field very well. LA 322 is a very good class because of the e-discovery subject matter. Professor Brynelson helps you to learn the material and gives great feedback on written assignments. She had instilled in me a passion for the law. I recommend taking this class and taking Prof. B.
Law Firm Management Class. I found the professor to be negative and uninspiring. Shes not approachable and the curriculum is dated. Boring class overall and her approach really made me rethink participating in the program if she is going to be teaching the majority of future classes.
Prof. B let's me call her when I need help. She is even meeting with us this weekend on campus. I never met a professor that cared this much about her students.
I have learned to calendar deadlines and the next day I was asked to do it at work. She knows what we need to be successful as a paralegal.
Legal Research is hard to take online. I loved that I could contact the professor and she would take my calls. I think I will take Legal Writing on-campus since I think online classes take more time than on-campus classes. The best part about Prof. B is she really cares about her students. She voluntarily met with us at the library on Saturdays
She really cares and is very detailed - prepares you with real world assignments and helps every step of the way. She is amazing and really knows her the law.
Prof. B made sure we had face to face office hours on Zoom. She made herself so available to her online students, I could not believe it. No other professor who teaches online has made themselves available for face to face office hours.
The guest speakers are amazing and so is she!
Professor Brynelson knows her stuff. She gives good assignments that allow you to use the legal skills you learn while in the Legal Assisting program at ARC. I would take her again. She's a good listener and helps those who work hard and give good effort in tackling the material she is teaching.
This Professor is very knowledgeable and is dedicated to teaching and helping new students in the legal field clearly learn what an entry level paralegal would need to know in order to be successful in the field. She will answer all your questions and is very personable. Her lectures are informative and grading is based on your actual work.
I have now taken three classes with Professor Brynelson, LA350, LA322 ADV LEGAL RESEARCH, AND LA310 CIVIL LIT. After completing this May, I can say Brynelson has been the most well rounded professor of my program experience. I loved the diversity in types of assignments, discussion board posts to quizzes, to writing practice it was all worth it.
This is my 3rd class with Prof Brynelson. Advanced legal writing is MUCH easier than intro legal writing so don't be afraid to take it. This Prof is extremely organized, gives very clear instructions, and grades assignments ON TIME. Very well managed course. Wonderful Prof and great class.
Professor Brynelson is a professional and she would very much like her students to leave her class with the knowledge and skills required to be a professional paralegal. She cares about her students progress and will check and work with the student if the student falls behind. She is approachable and is lucky to learn from her vast law experience.
Great professor, really does try to make sure the class is keeping up with the course material, and gains understanding. Is understanding, and sets students up for success. Does bring up political views, as relevant to class, however I think other examples can be brought up to avoid the current event politics. OK grader, no clear grading rubric
I would say this class is difficult, but she does it at a pace that makes it easy. She gives you her cell number to call if you need help. ( Just don't call during the super bowl) I would gladly take any of the classes she teaches.
This professor does not teach you anyting that is not in the textbooks and relies to heavily on outside speakers. If you don't mind being compared to other students, than by all means take this professor.
She is the best!
She is remarkable. She has more knowledge about civil law than any other professor teaching. She has worked for 31 years as a lawyer and has so many professional friends that come and give training as if we were working in a law firm. I heard she does this in LA 350 also and I cannot wait to take her this semester!
Summer course was easy, Zoom meetings are crazy helpful. She makes this class as clear and concise as possible and answers every question. chapter quizzes are simple, assignments are gone over multiple times in zoom meetings she visually shows you how and where to find assignment info. She understands it's your first research class.
Brynelson is a great teacher. You will have to show up for class, do the reading, assignments, and tests but it isn't too much. She treats her students with respect and you will learn so much from her. She replies to emails and is there for her office hours. She provides timely feedback to assignments too. I highly recommend taking her classes.
Most of what I learned in the program was from Brynelson. I LOVE the way she teaches and how she has patience to answer our questions. She is truly a gem, her assignments and tests are super relevant to working as a paralegal and I appreciate her so much.
I have taken LA350, LA320, LA321, & LA322 from professor B. She is the most patient and most engaged with her students that I've experienced in this program. Prepare to learn AND enjoy what you're learning. Guest speakers are top notch and nationally respected in their fields. Office hours are convenient and she is always ready for a drop in.
Great professor with a wealth of industry knowledge.
Brynelson made herself available to students as needed. She had clear office hours. She was direct/straightforward in her expectations and lectures. She had a clear structure for the class. She was always open to answering questions. She assigned an appropriate amount of homework, quizzes, and reading. Fair and reasonable.
I think Professor Brynelson is an incredible smart woman and professor, however I wish she recorded her lectures so you could actually review the information she teaches. Be prepared to have thoughtful discussions both in class and as homework. Information learned in her class is actually applicable in legal career.
Reads slides. Does not give examples on how to complete assignments. Student engagement and participation doesn't feel welcomed. Have to rely on reading to do well.
I think this professor is a great person outside of the classroom, there is a lot of pre-recorded lectures, which I didn't think would be this way, we're paying our good money not to listen to recordings. I've heard several in the class state they don't really like the course, nice, but not very open to dialog.
I have taken several classes from Professor Brynelson, she assigns textbooks that can be used as manuals when working as a paralegal and most of the homework assignments are forms and issues worked in a law office. She is quick to respond to any issues regarding assignments outside of class by email. I continue to take her classes.
Prof. Brynelson's teaching style is pleasant and easy to follow. She conveyed the material clearly. She is very particular. Prof. is unreasonably "my way or the highway." Her classes almost never take the full time allotted. She expects you to attend and takes role.
Professor is good at what she does but I am not a fan of the pre-recorded lectures from years ago especially since attendance is mandatory. Her assignment instructions are very clear on what needs to be done in order to receive all points. Overall a good professor just not a fan of the pre recorded lectures!
Take as many classes from Brynelson as you can. I've graduated and since enrolled in a JD program. Brynelson's classes provided a fantastic foundation law school. Guest speakers are pre-recorded, but WOW they are impressive. Pay attention, they're super interesting! I don't know another professor who brings in the caliber of people Brynelson does.
This professor brings the best legal professionals in the community to guest speak at her class. Prof. B clearly explains that these are busy professionals who do this as a favor for her. She clearly told us that they have been willing to come live for over 10 years, but after the pandemic preferred to be recorded. They are very impressive!
Prof. B assigns work that you would be asked to do in a law office and her legal resources are amazing! I got my first job this summer and I take them with me to my job. I recommend taking all the classes you can from her. She will get you ready for your job and help you keep it!
Professor Brynelson does not seem to care about being a good teacher. Her lectures are hard to sit through and not interactive. You can also tell all these past "good ratings" are written by her by the way she speaks. I wish there was another option to teach LA350, someone who has experience managing a law firm and likes teaching.
If you are a visual or hands-on learner - this class will not be easy for you. Class reading schedule is not organized evenly and is very heavy some weeks. Lectures also not time-managed well and not interactive. Quizzes have trick questions. There are not many assignments to make you critically think about the terminology taught in the textbooks.
The professor is very knowledgeable but rigid. Pre-recorded guest speakers are not ideal. Live guest speakers would be better. It would be helpful if all lectures could be recorded. Overall, easy A if you follow her Instructions precisely. It is her way or the highway. You will learn a lot!
I haven't learned anything about Civil Litigation with her assigned expensive readings. I ended up renting the Cengege Civil Litigation book and learned soo much more than what the professor provided in lectures. I don't think she likes students or questions, and that's not healthy for a professor. Find another professor for your civil law class!
Prof. Brynelson is not the professor you want to take if you want to learn and engage. Most of the class meetings are pre-recorded. Lectures are pretty boring and many times not very helpful or are pointless. Not very friendly, nags people to raise their hand anytime they want to make a peep in class. Felt like this class was a major waste of time.
This professor knows the Sacramento legal world. All of her guest speakers are people students would never have a chance to hear speak. I feel lucky they were willing to be recorded after all the semesters they ca me to campus. I don't understand why that bothered other students.
I am an attorney who took this class to see if I wanted my paralegals to take it. Yes, I do want them to take it. Brynelson covers what I want them to know. P. S. I hired a paralegal out of that class.
Requires extremely expensive books/material. She speaks very highly of herself and condescending towards any students asking questions. Lectures are very boring and based off her outline which we can read ourselves. Too many pointless discussion boards. Teaches 350 also. You learn, but from all the reading, not her.
Professor Brynelson prepares you to work in a law office. She is very interested in all of her students and makes sure they learn the basics of billing, calendaring and file management.
Prof. B really introduced us to legal people in Sacramento. She had several guest speakers that really shared important information. I really liked how she explained what to expect if she was your supervising attorney. Everything was really practical.
Prof. B is amazing. We learned so much from the book and from other things. I loved learning about the 2008 financial crisis because I was very young when it happened. She relates almost everything to the subject. I am ready to go buy my first stock!
Professor Brynelson is terrific. Everything is organized and I knew exactly what we were doing all summer long. I wish other professors would use this type of organization. I have take 4 classes with her. She is my favorite.
Make sure to do all the steps in the homework and discussion post. Very straightfoward.
Professor Brynelson is amazing! She knows what she is talking about and speaks on her experience. The readings are very informative, and gives us many recourses we can use in our legal career. It's important that you don't skip any discussion posts! (iykyk)
