Julia Chamberlain is a true gem. She had a bad rap in the past but she really took it to heart and changed her teaching style to be closer to Professor Enderle. She teaches to all levels and different ways of learning.
I was pretty disappointed I didn't get Enderle for 2C but Chamberlain-dare I say it- was actually better! Super clear lectures and always available for help. Loved this class!
Super nice lady, genuinely cares about chemistry and teaching you the real life application behind it. First midterm was fair, second was a little tougher. Definitely got curve-balled on the final with the drawing structural isomers... It was worth a decent amount of points but VERY briefly covered in lecture? Glosses over important topics for sure
Julia Chamberlain is a very nice professor and truly has a passion for chemistry. However, her lectures were often very confusing and hard to follow. If you struggle with Chemistry (like I do) I HIGHLY recommend trying to take this class with a different professor, it will save you so much stress! Also there was no curve :(
If you have no other professor teaching that quarter do the class at community college. Taking her class lowered my GPA single-handedly. Please avoid.
VERY VERY NICE LADY. Tests, however, are difficult and unpredictable. Her lectures are super clear but her exams often focus on concepts that are barely mentioned. I bet she'll continue to improve because she's come a long way since she first started.
She wasn't too bad tbh. Her midterms were fair and the averages were mid 70s so people did well. The final kinda threw many people off as it was difficult, although she did curve! Lots of buffers for your grade including OWL, discussion, surveys, and lab!
chamberlain is the best professor I had for che2 series. she explained almost everything well-- she did have a few mistakes here and there during lectures. Exams are easy if you study the materials well, but it was totally unpredictable. I suggest studying your notes after lectures and working on the discussion problems before discussion.
At first, after reading her reviews I wanted to give Chamberlain the benefit of the doubt, but things quickly went downhill after the 1st midterm. She doesn't fully understand concepts herself, and usually provides an unsatisfactory explanation of them. Tests were harder than what I thought would be fair, and she doesn't give many practice exams.
First A in CHE2 series. Chamberlain was mediocre in lecture but her exams were very fair. Actually a very generous grading criteria as well since 90% of her midterms were open response. Lab, HW, Surveys can bump you up a grade as well as her "magic points" curve at the end of the quarter. Solid choice and very kind.
exams were definitely harder than practice exams given and kind of unpredictable. she's okay at explaining things but not the best, enderle's youtube videos definitely helped more than her lectures did. has a pretty generous curve but I definitely felt like i was going to fail for most of the quarter
I actually enjoyed her class and I had Enderle and Gulacar before her. Her exams are more straightforward than the other 2 chem prof I've had. If you are going to prep for midterms, def recommend you do all the practice exams she gives you. Her lectures are kind of fast but she records her lectures. She's super nice and is very understanding!
Dr. Chamberlain is an excellent professor. I feel like I actually learned in her class. She is almost as good as a professor as Enderle, but her tests are extremely difficult. Her practice exams are nothing like the real exams.
She is the best chem professor I've had so far in Davis and I've had Toup and Gulacar. Her lectures are organized and easy to follow. Her practice exams are similar to her actual exams contrary to what past reviews said. She's caring and open to feedback. Her explanations are clear and concise. Curve is ok. 66-81 was B- to B+ on the first midterm.
Nice Professor Bad TESTs
Surprised she has such a low rating on here, she must have improved for fall quarter. Her lectures have been very good with clear definitions of terms and practice problems. She assigns weekly homework in OWL which doesn't take too long and drives home the concepts. Tests were about 65% average but she provides everything necessary to succeed
I don't know why she has such a low rating. The class is pretty hard, but I also just suck at chemistry. She's really straightforward. I haven't done too well in her class, but thats because I havent put in enough effort. she gives you everything to succeed in her class. She does go through things quickly, but shes a great choice for chem
Absolute favorite professor at Davis! I struggled in 2A and B but her class made me really like chem. Lectures are great, homework is fairly helpful, and her problem solving workshops are a great supplement. Chem is tough regardless, but she makes it interesting and easier to follow. Highly recommend.
Chamberlain's teaching style is great, she teaches at a slow pace so that everyone understands. She also does an OChem lecture towards the end of the course and it prepares you so well for when you move onto OChem. She had a ton of homework though.
I LOVED CHAMBERLAIN! She teaches chemistry concepts so well it makes it easy. Just do the OWL questions and the discussion worksheets to get a lot of practice and go to lectures! She's so open to questions so don't be afraid to ask and you will 100% benefit from asking. Her exams were VERY fair and representative of the material.
She is one of the worst professors I've ever had. The tests were absolutely nothing like any of the homework or lecture material. There was no way to prepare for them. The questions on the tests were intentionally confusing, ten times more difficult than in lecture, or on topics we never even discussed. Avoid at all costs.
CHAMBERLAIN WAS SO GREAT! She really cares about her students and she provides a bunch of resources! She gave a lot of practice exams, some extra credit, and lots of ways for students to ask for help (office hours, workshops, study jams) shes super nice and really cares about her students (even remembers some of their names!) 10/10
Honestly, Chamberlain deserves a much higher rating because she truly cares about the success of her students. Her practice exams & discussion worksheets are really helpful in preparing for the actual exams. She also tries to explain concepts in lecture as thoroughly as possible & is always open to answer questions. Her exams are very fair, too.
Dr. Chamberlain is a sweet lady who gives relatively clear lectures by annotating her slides and offers a lot of resources to help you understand the material. This class requires a lot of work, but it is possible to do well! Solid choice compared to many other chem professors at Davis.
I liked Chamberlain. Her practice exams are very similar to her actual midterm exams, but the final was more tricky. She curved the class pretty generously. She's not exceptionally amazing but she's not terrible either. I appreciate that she didn't try to surprise us on any of the exams.
She is really nice and tries her best to teach the material in an understandable manner. But her exams were really hard. No matter how much I studied and went to OH hours I was never prepared. The exams were largely based on stuff she would briefly go over in lecture. There were 2 midterms, 1 final and weekly HW.
Chamberlain has improved a ton from what I heard about her when she first came. 2C is a hard course, but her class was fair. The final was difficult, but none of the questions were ridiculously obscure and the class was curved nicely. Getting an A is definitely doable if you pay attention in class and do lots of practice problems!!
She wastes a lot of time going over useless material in the lectures but rushes through the important ones. Doesn't explain problems in a straightforward manner. She does provide a lot of material for tests which are helpful, but the amount of time spent on this course per week is just way too much and most people barely still understand anything
She uses lecture capture which is really helpful as a supplement to the class, but I would still recommend actually going to the class. The lab is mandatory. Attendance is taken in the discussion. She was a fine teacher, assigns homework due at noon, which is kind of annoying but okay. Overall, she was fine. I had low expectations going into it.
She cares a lot about student feedback, we had a lot of hw in the beginning of the course but she reduced it bc of student response, and she cares about students in general. Not many practice midterms, and each midterm is 20% (there are 2). Discussion and Lab are mandatory, final is 38%. Very organized, and she records lectures, but a lot of work.
Chamberlain was a caring professor. Her tests do not reflect the lecture as much as it should. Its doable but you need to to study. Her curve is practically nonexistent. She curves the overall grade at the end. I got a 83 raw on the first midterm, a 63 raw on the second, and a 88 raw score on the final. I ended with a 81 w/ the curve
One of the best teachers at UCD! Dr. C provided so many resources- lecture capture (so you can rewatch parts of lecture for extra clarification), extra credit, etc. Tests were straightforward and as hard as any science course. And, as with any science/math class, a lot of time will be needed for assignments/exams. You will learn alot with her!
Chamberlain is a solid choice for 2A. Her tests were pretty fair, everything she covered was on it, no surprises. She provides a lot of study resources, it's up to you to use them. The discussion worksheets are really helpful in solidifying your knowledge. If you study the material she lectures on and use her resources, you should 100% pass.
She is a very caring professor and is willing to answer any questions with patience. She tries to go over as much content as possible in her slides, but ends up only going over a fraction of what we need to know. Her exams were on the challenging side. There is a lot of online homework, but the homework is good practice for midterms.
Provides a lot of resources. She's nice and caring! She does go over the material, but I wish she explained everything more thoroughly. Just like any other class, put in a little work everyday and utilize all the resources well. Got an A+ on the first midterm, C on the second (yikes), A- on the final and ended up with an A- in the class.
Chemistry is hard already but Dr. Chamberlain provides many resources. She has workshops outside of the traditional office hours and she updates things frequently. She cares about the feed back from the class and the tests are fair. Her tests only cover what she goes over in class but doesn't mean it will be easy and not tricky. Just stay organized
Dr. Chamberlain is really nice and caring. I had her for 2a and thought her tests were very fair. The final (which is department wide, but she helped write it) was extremely easy I thought. During lecture she takes notes on her slides and posts the note slides with and without written notes afterward in addition to a podcast. I would recommend.
Great lectures but homework is kind of a lot. She answers lots of questions in class and helps students in office hours and her workshops. midterms werent too bad either and final was fine. if you put the time in, you will be fine
Chamberlain overall seems like a very good professor; her lectures are fun and interactive with lots of opportunities for students to discuss amongst themselves and ask questions. There is mandatory online homework which is relevant and helpful, and her expectations of her students are clear and explicit.
CHE2A. Her teaching style is unnecessarily complicated. Hence, not many people showed up to the lectures. There was online homework thru OWL and those assignments took 3-4 hours. You can just learn through OWL and not go to lecture. To be fair, her grading curve was huge at the end. I think a 60% was a C or C-.
Love Julia. Lectures are super detailed and I'm actually able to look back at my notes and learn from them. Super helpful that she has lecture capture (not all chem profs do) and she definitely cares about her students.
No one can top Enderle but overall she did a good job. A good chunk of the grade is not based on tests with chances for extra credit. Tests had pretty good curves overall. Lectures were recorded so attendance isn't mandatory but be sure not to fall behind. One minor annoyance is that she won't allow graphing calculators.
She was a decent professor. The good: lectures were clear, organized, understandable. provides some ec. Homework was mandatory but helps with grade and somewhat prepares you for the tests. The bad: midterms can be confusing so study hard. The class is doable to get a B or A just read the textbook a little and practice on the homework.
Great lectures, lecture capture, useful online homework, good test review sessions, and practice exams! But all of that is not important. I slept through half of my second midterm and it would've crashed my grade. I explained the situation and Chamberlain adjusted the score later to be similar to my final grade. She saved my GPA and is the best!
In Toup or Crabtree's gen chem class, you could get super far ahead in the midterms, like 2 stdevs higher than the class average, and go easy on the final while still getting an A. Chamberlain makes her tests easy and fair so everyone is more clustered around the mean so you have to work hard towards the end to ensure an A. Good choice overall :)
Chamberlain is a good lecturer. Her lectures are easy to understand. Her tests are fair, but making small mistakes can cost lots of points sometimes. She is an inorganic chemists, so she might not be able to explain all organic stuff.
Professor chamberlain video records her lectures so its nice to go back after class and review material. If you do discussion worksheets, review lectures, homework, and practice finals you should be able to do well in her class. Beware of the final.
Overall a good professor who has drastically improved. Exams can be quite nit picky though, so study everything.
Se cares about the students and her test aren't extremely hard, but still difficult as it is chemistry. She is a good choice for chemistry and has a lot of resources to use such as video recordings and annotated notes.
Pretty hard class but the same can be said about all the chem professors. She actually explained every single type of problem and everything on the exams was gone over in class. Midterms and final were hard, but the curve makes up for it. Posted notes with recorded lectures so I never really went to class. Solid choice for chem.
She is the best 2C professor. If you can't make it to class just watch the lecture captures. There's homework, two midterms and a final.
She gets a bad rep because she is not the most dynamic lecturer, but honestly it doesn't matter because she's a good teacher. She's so nice and understanding, she truly wants her students to do well. She's super well organized and you always know what's expected of you. She gives a lot of different resources.
This woman is a great teacher who really cares about her students. Is transparent and wants to see her children succeed.
Solid choice for che2c.
It is sad to see Chamberlain's rating average still so low! She is an incredible teacher. I had her for both CHE 2A and 2C, and there is no other professor who cares as much about her students, their health, their learning, their questions. Lectures, HW, practice exams, office hours, workshops and all the resources she provides are excellent.
I am surprised to see Chamberlain's rating so low! I'm not sure how she was in previous years, but I definitely think her teaching style has improved a lot based on past reviews. She is good at letting us know what is expected of the class and her practice examples in class help a lot.
The only bad thing I have to say is that her practice exam keys dont show her work, so its hard to see where you messed up!
Chamberlain is a terrific lecturer because she really explains the concepts in depth. I recommend doing the OWL problems right after the lectures to make sure you understand what was covered. For sure, work on her practice exams to prepare for exams.
Inadequate when it comes to answering questions in lecture. She talks more than she lectures. Slides contain little to no information. Compared to Enderle, she doesn't know what she is talking about. Avoid.
Chamberlain is a good choice for CHE 2C since she provides a lot of the information on the lecture slides and she post the notes and records her lectures. She offers some extra credit but it only helps a little and its not enough to make a big change in your grade. But you need to work extremely hard to get the grade you want.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had at Davis. She has hardly any information on her slides because she wants you to read the textbook and get it from there. When asked a question in class she doesnt know how to respond and says I dont know. Little to no curve. Her study guides are her learning objectives.
Absolutely adore her. One of the best French profs ever. Class was quite easy as long as you did the work and came to class.
She's amazing! She makes everything clear and easy to understand.
She is a FAIR professor. Che2C is just tricky. Her exams were fair and covered material in class.
I don't know why Chamberlain has such a low rating. SHE IS GREAT!! She's such a sweet person and always finding new ways to make her class almost perfect for her students. She never rejected a question during lecture. She goes a bit fast, but always tries to get lecture capture for her class. Just make sure to put your own effort into the class.
I love Professor Chamberlain's lectures! They are really clear, and she provides a lot of midterm resources. She does not seem to answer her email often though and a bit slow in her office for a good reason: explain the concept clearly. Her tests are fair! She deserves a higher rating that this. Best gen chemistry professor for 2C
Not respected. Get ready to put in all the effort possible into a class and gain nothing in return. When the students voiced their concerns to her over her absurd abundance of homework and lab work assigned, AND her impossible tests, she did not do anything to change or show sympathy. Went to every office hour possible including for lab, got a C+
Dr. Chamberlain is an awesome choice for Chemistry 2C! Lectures are crystal clear, tests are FAIR, and she is super helpful in office hours. I have no idea why her rating is so low.....
She is an extremely fair professor. The learning goals are clearly explained and she provides study guides as well. I am taking her class during COVID and the format is multiple tests, which for a person with test anxiety has helped relieved pressure because there is less weight on each exam. I like her so much better than Gulacer for 2B and 2A
Dr. Chamberlain has been one of the most responsive, organized profs. I've had during COVID. Tests are clear. Lectures are awesome. Dr. Chamberlain is all I want in a Chemistry professor and I am blessed to have her this quarter. Chemistry is not my strong suit but with Dr. Chamberlain, it is. That's how great her teaching is. Bless her soul.
Julia is incredibly compassionate and cares for her students. Her lectures are organized and she is very passionate about the 2C topics. There was nothing funky coming out of left field to trick you on quizzes and exams. One of the best professors I've had at Davis, and by far the best general chem professor I've had.
Chamberlain is an amazing professor! For CHE 2C, she really knows her stuff, and was very flexible/understanding for remote learning. Some of the subject matter is confusing but she explains concepts very well.
Professor Chamberlain was the best CHE2 professor I had! She was very receptive to student feedback in emails and surveys after each exam. I thought her newer lecture captures and slides were informative and easy to follow. Her quizzes and exams were fair and reflected content that was taught in class. Would take every CHE class with her if I could
Dr. Chamberlain is the best chemistry professor I've had at UC Davis. She is very intelligent and passionate about what she teaches. Her lectures are very informative and she teaches very thoroughly. I have always hated chemistry but I found myself actually enjoying what I was learning in her class. Miraculous. You will not regret taking her class.
Chamberlain's an excellent instructorher teaching style was very clear and easy to understand. She was very understanding and accommodating of the students' concerns. She publishes very detailed study guides with suggested practice problems that were super helpful for studying. She teaches using annotated slides that she posts after lecture.
No curve yall. Her tests are quite challenging and people cheat a lot this quarter. Thus, she doesnt curve the class which only hurts honest students who work hard to earn their grades. I thought she would be more understanding and accommodating since this is a tough quarter for students to learn online, but no. NO CURVE IS NO CURVE.
Dr. Chamberlain's class was very structured, lectures were clear, and she gave fair exams (many exams... stay on top of studying). Many students complain about how she didn't curve. However, I think it was reasonable for her not to curve because the averages were inflated (if she did a CHE2 curve, this probably would have lead to a downcurve).
Dr. Chamberlain was easily the best chem teacher Ive had in the CHE 2 series. Her lectures actually made sense, and the questions on her tests were familiar and made sense from lecture. I actually felt prepared for tests. I really hope that I can have Dr. Chamberlain again. 10/10 would recommend her class!
Her cutoff wasnt fair when she allowed students to take quizzes without being proctored. And somehow, people just managed to cheat in her class. There is no way the average can be that high that she didnt curve. Her tests were not that hard but not easy to get a really high score. Imagine yourself working hard for your grade and people cheated.
Professor Chamberlain teaches very well. However, her methods of testing students were too lenient that they tempted students to cheat. Not sure of it though, but the average was unusually high. Recommend taking her when theres no more remote learning.
Terrible Professor! Not compassionate at all, everyone cheated in her class so the average went way up and did not make any curve whatsoever for those trying to actually do well in her class. Would definitely not take again lots of homework and quizzes and tests and the list goes on
Terrible Professor! Not compassionate at all, everyone cheated in her class so the average went way up and did not make any curve whatsoever for those trying to actually do well in her class. Would definitely not take again lots of homework and quizzes and tests and the list goes on.
Chamberlain is a nice prof but not the best teacher. Literally no curve in the class. OWL Homework was excessive. Number of assessments were excessive. MORE Tests on smaller Amts of material are MORE stressful, not less. Lectures were good in the beginning but began to slide in quality after a while. So glad Im done with this series
Professor chamberlain is nice, but with a lot of students cheating this quarter and bringing the average to a B average, she decides to not curve the class. Its a shame that for those that are at the borderline of passing/not passing will not get any boost to help them and its frustrating. The office hours were helpful, but structured poorly.
There were 4 exams and 5 quizzes, which I preferred over 2 midterms. Her lecture videos are very clear and she really goes into detail to explain concepts. Her office hours were super helpful. Didnt curve because the class average was an 82. Sad to see her with so many bad ratings tbh, shes a very kind instructor and wants the best for you.
I wish her ratings weren't so low. I took Gulacar for 2A/2C and Chmberlain blew me away with how much clearer her teaching is. Took this online so midterms were replaced with exams and quizzes, which allowed for more flexibility. Did not curve course since the average was a B but that is only because her teaching is amazing. Take her if you can!!
Chamberlain was amazing! I thought she was extremely helpful to everyone who asked and was fairly flexible with the COVID struggles. People on here complaining probably didn't take advantage of the many resources she gave. Exams were VERY fair. difficult yes, but thats with every class. Not as crazy as has been the case with other profs. Recommend!
Dr. Chamberlain's class required a lot of hard work, however I do not think it was unfair in any sort of way. You definitely have to develop a deeper understanding of the material and concepts, which is what made the class hard for people who were dependent on memorization based learning. Lectures were thorough and prepared us well for the exams.
I'm usually horrible at Chemistry, but Chamberlain's teaching style really worked for me. Her lectures include everything that you need to know for quizzes/exams, and she gives a lot of practice for the quizzes/exams. I would definitely recommend her! (I had her for Che2C in online format due to Covid).
Wow I'm truly shocked that she has such a low rating on here. I honestly hated chemistry in high school. Then Chamberlain's class made me LOVE chemistry. I even thought about switching into a chem-related major because of her. Her organization, lectures, homework, etc are STELLAR. I would take all of her courses if I could. TAKE HER CLASS!!
I appreciate that she implemented the 5 weekly exams system (each worth 9%) in order to avoid stressful midterms but each test is so difficult. so many questions for 30 minutes of testing. And the final will be worth 28%, meaning that tests will be worth 73% total! Not the best class for nervous/poor test takers.
Chamberlain was one of the most caring profs I've had at Davis so far. To make tests less stressful due to COVID, she divided the tests into 5 bi-weekly quizzes alternating with 4 bi-weekly exams. She made a study guide tailored for each quiz and exam, listing out all of the learning objectives and practice test questions that will be covered.
Does not curve the class. Summer session has all together exams worth up to 73% of the class. Weekly midterms that are only 30 minutes long. Averages are always around 50 to 60%. Super disappointing.
I usually like to give all professors a chance but don't take chamberlain if you wanna save your gpa. stressful 30 minute weekly exams with low averages yet basically no class curve.
i'm actually doing well in this class but it's only bc chem is my favorite subject. sure, chamberlain knows her stuff but it irks me that she thinks her grading system is "generous." it's annoying to have rushed weekly exams that are 30 min. she has a low rating for a reason!!! if other profs are full, don't be afraid of taking chem another quarter
If she started to care about her students and their current struggles with the pandemic, then her rating would have been higher. I can't tell if she is mean or just clueless, based on her opinion that her ridiculous grading scheme is fair. Like the other reviews said, her class is not ideal so definitely pick another prof or take the course later.
Disappointed that she isn't more lenient considering everything that is going on. Has weekly midterms, that contain various questions, that we have to complete within 30 minutes. Many students have expressed their concerns and felt dismissed. Exam averages have all been around 60%, yet somehow the class average is 77%. Does not curve.
She is an incredible lecturer and presents the material in an interesting way, HOWEVER her tests are nothing like the practices she gives you and makes everything so unnecessarily confusing on tests that it is impossible to succeed. If your grades don't matter for grad school or med school TAKE HER! If they do, it is not worth jeopardizing your gpa
She is not an accommodating professor. She had 5 WEEKLY quizzes worth 45% and a final worth 28% of your grade. Several students raised their concern, & she didn't change anything. She somehow she made the situation all about her. Tests are 30 minutes for MC and Free Response. She doesn't curve and has too many assignments. I do not recommend her.
To address the top rating, she has a low rating because she is a horrible professor in terms of caring for her students. She might teach the content in a digestible manner, but if want to pass this course, be prepared to do an insane amount of work and watch long lecture videos. She also doesn't curve and tests make up 73% of your grade. Beware.
I did not enjoy her class at all! I understood nothing from her lectures which were all prerecorded from last year. Given COVID made it hard to adjust to online teaching, she was not accommodating whatsoever. I had a 36-hour trip back home during COVID-19 and she didn't let me postpone the exam and responded to my email the day before the exam!
AVOID! Acts like she cares for her students but then gives us weekly midterms that are only 30 minutes, consisting of about 12-15 questions. Has HORRIBLE averages, yet refuses to curve. Students bring up concerns about the class and she ignores it.
Usually I don't write reviews on RMP, but this time it was necessary. This professor does not care for her students at all. She wrote flawed test questions, and students were penalized for her mistakes. Points were deducted for correct answers. (Even when students stated that important information had not been communicated to them during the test.)
I have never had a professor that I disliked. There was so much hw, lectures were so unclear that I had to watch Yt videos instead and everything was just a mess. Doesn't care about her students and honestly was so rude. "I would like to give you all A such as I would like to deliver in a COVID free hospital but both aren't possible." How rude.
If you guys want to at least have a CHANCE in passing here you go...... Search up on Youtube: Enderle 2C Thank me later :)
Unbelievable. We were given heavy exams and only 30 mins every week. The averages for the exams were in the F's, D's and C's yet she refused to curve our grades. She even went as far as saying "I would like to give you all A such as I would like to deliver in a COVID free hospital but both aren't possible" when we voiced our concerns. Avoid Julia.
Dr. C is an amazing professor. She teaches with clarity and enthusiasm. Lectures are engaging with interesting examples. Exams are filled with real-life chemistry scenarios and we are given plenty of time. Many did not do well because they weren't smart. Overall a great professor who I will take if I see her teaching another chem course!
I have taken many stem professors and each one of them have some faults in terms of caring for their students but none of them have been as selfish as chamberlain. She has not accommodated anything whatsoever even despite the countless concerns and struggles students have brought to her attention and doesn't even curve when our avgs are so low.
She's a solid professor. She taught the material well through pre-recorded lectures in which you can easily revisit topics that you're stuck on. The weekly exams weren't bad. Just read them very closely; additionally, she provides tons of practice exams that prepare you well for the exams as well. I would rate 8/10.
Took her for SS1. Weekly exams, although it was stressful, I personally liked it because there was less to study for each week compared to a big midterm. No curve which sucks (1-3% max)!! Best studying tips were to rewrite all the notes, watch Youtube videos and do ALL of her practice exams until you understand each question on there.
My biggest regret at Davis is taking this class with her. SS1 was her guinea pig. She experimented with us and even when it clearly did not work by the first week, she did the bare minimum of changing it. My first chem class that didnt curve even when they midterm averages were ridiculously low.
I found myself understanding her lectures best out of all the chem professors I had. Chem isn't my favorite subject, but by the end, I actually understood all of the concepts (a nice surprise). I'm not a fan of the weekly tests, but that may just be for summer sessions. The class WAS curved up to a C/C+ average as usual a little after the final.
Overall, the class wasn't too bad. Recorded lectures were clear + practice exams are like the real ones. However, the class is fast-paced. Exam questions were not too difficult themselves, but you had to work fast since a short amount of time is given. The curve was also small since avg. was high. If ur confident w/ CHE+can work fast, id consider.
In my 4 years at UC Davis, I have *never* written a rate for a professor before - good or not so good. But I just had to this time. Prof. Chamberlain is a good lecturer and clearly knowledgeable - but. she. does. not. care. about her students. Even in the middle of a pandemic, she failed half the class. Oh and tests? Worth nearly 75% of your grade.
worst professor at Davis. was not accommodating, her exams were extremely difficult and none of her practice was helpful. avoid at all costs. I'd rather take this class at community college.
This class was a bit rough from the get go, as almost all of our grade was based on our 5 midterms and a final. The homework was also quite a load, with there being four fat assignments a week. Dr. C. is pretty nice, but you NEED outside resources to pass this class. Definitely would recommend another professor or a tutor. Good luck.
I have never written a review about a prof. but I am obliged to. If you need to take this class and she is your professor, take this class at another school. I loved chemistry until I met her. She is inconsiderate, selfish, and enjoys watching students suffer. If you want to save your mental health, don't take her.
Not sure why she has such a low rating. Professor Chamberlain really seemed to care about her students and wanted to see them succeed. When I asked her questions outside of class, she was very kind, patient and helpful.
Not the worst, but far from the best. The way to learn chem is through many examples. She hardly did examples in lecture. Went on tangents during class on loosely related topics. Lectures were so slow and when students would start leaving during the last 5 min, she would cover a bunch of info during that time. Tested on orbitals shapes at least 2x
Gives quiz on weeks that there are no midterms. Lectures are seemingly unorganized. Basically gives no curve. Has no sympathy, but uses an excuse to treat students like a research. She should have chosen to act as a super villain in an action movie instead.
Too many tests and quizzes. Lectures unrelated to material. And if they are, she covered more memorization topics vs actual computation. Nice professor but not good professor. Seems to care more about conducting her learning research through her surveys than actually teaching students CHE 2C
Took in Spring 2021, completely asynchronous lectures of old recorded videos from pre pandemic with normal lecture times serving as a Q&A. Tests were very short to discourage cheating but were very stressful due to the time crunch and that they were worth so few points but were a big % of our grade and mean and SD was nuts. Had a decent time.
Dr. Chamberlain was very kind and caring. I liked the setup of the class (Spring 2021) because all lectures were asynchronous but she was available for questions during lecture time. I really liked her lectures as they helped me actually understand the concepts. Her tests were short but somewhat difficult, and you definitely have to study to pass.
Not sure why people don't like her. Dr. Chamberlain's lectures are easy to follow, and she explains things very well. Take good notes, do the practice tests and HW and you'll be fine in this class; I personally thought 2C was a lot easier than 2B.
I was hesitant to take this class because chem is not my strength but professor Chamberlain made it much better than I could have ever imagined. She really cares to answer your questions. If you have a personal problem impacting you she is very kind and understanding. The way she explains Chem made sense to me more than previous classes!
Really loved Dr Chamberlain & took her course majority asynchronously in SS1 as AR0. She is v clear with lectures & had helpful quizzes alongside to check for understanding. Everything on tests are in lecture/hw, but exams are worth a large % so u MUST study. She really cares about students, so if u feel stuck go to office hours & ask that q!
I don't understand why Dr. Chamberlain had mixed reviews; she was an amazing professor and truly cared for her students. She made sure we understood the material well and showed great knowledge about the subject. If I could take her class again I will!
Came into this class being a bit skeptical of the professor due to the red RMP reviews, but turns out she was surprisingly good, probably the best professor I had in the CHE2 series. Seems like her hate comes from doing weekly quizzes but her exams are easy as long as you do the practice exams and she was clear in her lectures.
Took over summer during covid. She really tried to be there for the students and her lectures were really clear and to the point, especially for someone who isnt great at chemistry. Absolutely best chemistry prof. Very understanding toward students and definitely knew her stuff.
Really enjoyed this class, even if Chem isn't my favorite. She did hybrid instruction and used the time during class to answer questions. Used lecture days to hold review sessions, made a unit optional, notes were clear and helpful, and she was always positive. She really cares about teaching and her students, even learning some of our names
Best Prof. I had in the entire CHE2 series!! 3 Midterms 1 final. Fair questions. Hybrid Class, which is flexible. Does many review sessions for exams. Gives extra credit. Lectures are easy to understand and she is clear and concise with her information. Cares about her students. Very very short pre lec quizes . Highly RECOMMEND her!!
Dr. C is AMAZING!! I actually came out of this class considering taking more chemistry classes because she made me like chemistry that much. She is a really amazing lecturer, and provides tons of resources that make the tests easy to succeed with. She is caring and takes the time to learn students names and answer questions. Definitely recommend!
Awful! She might be sweet but a harsh grader and gives unfair exams. Basically non existent curve. You can study those practice exams for days and itll be in a complete different language. Save your time dont take!
I really liked Dr. C. You can tell she loves chemistry and it rubbed off onto me. Really approachable and helpful when you ask questions in person. The more involved you become the better experience you will have in the class!
I LOVED Dr. C!! Out of all chem professors, she was my favorite. She explained things very clearly and it was obvious that she cared for her students. Her tests were challenging, but nothing impossible. She wanted you to really understand the material, so if you memorize everything, it isn't going to work out for you. I highly recommend her!
She's been my favorite chem professor so far! She's receptive to questions and feedback, and her lectures are clear. She's passionate about teaching and really cares about her students. The practice exams are useful, although sometimes the actual tests introduced new types of questions that we hadn't seen before.
Her lectures were great and her tests made sense. She gives lots of resources and specific examples in her study guides. She seems genuinely invested in the class, and its doable.
Prof Chamberlain wasn't the best professor I've had, but she is imo the best chem 2abc teacher I've ever had. She is very passionate about chem and gives great lectures. By no means is the class easy, however. The tests are quite difficult and require lots of studying. However, she provides ample resources, such as practice exams and such to help
chem is hard in general. she does it best. she truly cares about how her students do and is easy to reach. has amazing ta's, and she is overall super understanding and intelligent. she knows how to explain things in real words rather than reading a definition from the textbook. her tests reflect lecture and homework material also
She is a really good teacher. I didn't like the pre lecture videos we had to watch because the outside work became too excessive, but i found later on that just skimming through them was good enough. 3 midterms but were all very fair. Take her if you can
Professor Chamberlain was one of the best lecturers I've ever had. She was clear and concise on what matters when she's teaching. Her pre-lecture system is incredibly helpful and she is very considerate to her students. Take this class but don't take her for granted, go to class because her lectures can be very impactful. Tests are fairly easy.
Professor Chamberlain really cares about her students, and has a genuine interest in chemistry. The tests are really easy. The practice tests alone can prepare you for the exam.
Chamberlain is a fine prof, I had gulacar for 2A and 2B and I liked his lecture style better. Chamberlains lectures are easy to follow but content heavy. The midterms are not that bad if you study and know the material. Plenty of review materials given. Found my discussion section pointless
Average professor. You have to watch prelecture videos before each lecture so it almost feels like double lecture. Hardly curves. Exams are doable but each question is worth so many points that simple mistakes can drop you a letter grade. Doesnt seem very knowledgable during lecture.
Class curve was basically nonexistent. There are pre-lecture videos and quizzes as well as some free points from pre-exam surveys. Dr. Chamberlain is a very kind professor and content from tests are clearly expressed beforehand (however I personally think some of said content is irrelevant memorization rather than actual chemistry).
Julia's lectures were the most boring lectures, she relays information so slow and the 2/3 of the lecture was going over the pre lecture. We were basically doing chem everyday of the week bc we had lectures MWF but pre lectures due the day before each lecture along with a pre lecture quiz. Her tests were easy if you do the practice tests she gives.
No curve whatsoever. Easy exams but kills you with that nonexistent curve. I got the first B+ I have ever received in college in her class despite getting a decent percentage. The pre lecture videos was her dumbest idea when she could have just taught that in class. Her teaching style does not wok for me. She's really caring and nice though.
3 midterms and a final with pre-lecture videos. Really amazing professor she's clear and cares so much. Exams are normal difficulty but easier bc they aren't too long. Love her please take her.
Dr. Chamberlain is an awesome professor. Lectures are clear, lots of example problems, and in-lecture review sessions before midterms. She uses a hybrid teaching format, which involves watching a part of the lecture at home and answering a few short questions. There are 3 midterms. O-Chem unit is optional (self-study) and not on the final.
Her class is a hybrid format where parts of lectures are watched as homework. Lectures are very slow-paced-- which could be a downside to faster learners--and interactive. She is very clear about how her tests are graded and is very approachable if you ever have any questions. Holds review sessions before midterms and office hours are recorded.
Love, love, love her class. You can tell she really cares about the subject and students. Curve is "nonexistent" because the average is so high! Does a sort of hybrid course and really wants kids to learn. 3 midterms, 1 final. Provides practice exam/resources that really prepare you for the actual exams. Pay attention and study and you'll do good
People seem to forget that by 2C, all the students who didn't pass 2A and 2B are not in this class, thus higher test averages and a lower curve. That being said Julia is a wonderful professor who allows for a lot of questions during lecture and provides a LOT of practice exams that are more or less the same questions that end up on the exams.
Dr. Chamberlain is the best chem professor I've had in the Chem 2 series! Her pre-lecture videos are concise and really enhance her lecture experience. The content is difficult, so you have to self-study, but she is pretty helpful.
Her OLI assignments is like an entire textbook of reading and doing practice questions. If she's the only choice of professor you have to take, just wait until next term to take chemistry. Her reviews for this course are probably fake, honestly.
Professor Chamberlain attempts to make more work out of a course than what would be two. She uses far too many programs without knowing how to operate a single one. The work assigned is not difficult but the availability is all over the charts and mostly unhelpful. While there are no problems with her lectures, she fails to be a respectable teacher
She uses a hybrid format, where you watch part of the lecture before class (>20 min) and she teaches the rest in person. This gives her time to answer questions in class and it allows you to more easily digest content. Lectures are engaging with examples. Only complaint is that the online textbook (OLI) makes this class too heavy.
It was kind of all over the place for me personally. Two textbooks, one which you NEED to read to get those grades. OWL homework was helpful. The course is filled with gen chem topics and could have been easy. But the whole Hybrid class system was not it for me.
She assigns so much homework
She makes me hate chemistry
2 times homework than other professors. Hybrid course is good for study. Lecture is good. Difficult exams. Curve is good. Better than Duim.
Used too many different platforms for labs, reading (two textbooks for some reason), and practice problems. She rambles a lot and often glosses over important topics in the last two minutes of lecture. The material is chem I did in 9th grade with ease, but the way she designs the class makes it way harder than it should be. This class made me cry.
Chamberlain clearly cares about her students and due to the hybrid format of the class, she's able to answer questions in class. However, the workload she assigns is ridiculous. We had all of the lab assignments, understandably, but then also 2-3 homework assignments a week PLUS OLI textbook readings & checkpoints which made the workload insane.
Dr. chamberlain does care about her students. She is a good lecturer, but her exam is a little bit difficult and her workload is definitely big. I think her teaching method is definitely great for Che2A which can help you build a solid foundation for future Che2 series. Take her and study hard! You will get good grades.
Avoid. She assigns so much homework. I am literally about to cry over this class. She assigned three new homework assignments during "week 11". We don't have classes for a reason.
The workload is insane and she said that she received our feedback about but wasn't going to change anything this quarter. The workload is overwhelming and leaves no time for other classes especially during finals season
Good teacher but too much homework
Chamberlain does too much. Too much homework assignments and readings. It's like she thinks chemistry is the only class we are taking. OLI is the worst, yes it's helpful but there's so many questions on there that she doesn't go over or even mentions during her lectures. Most of her midterms are also based on OLI because she relies on that. AVOID!!
No words. I spend more than 15 hours a week doing chemistry because she just assigns too much work. She's a nice prof but nice can only get you so far. I'm surprised shes been teaching this long and yet still suck. Be ready for a lot of homework assignments and 3 midterms. Especially the last midterm where it's a week BEFORE FINALS like ma'am pls
Ngl, love her. My big gripe is that she says to use to the practice midterms but use OWL for test prep (they're kinda useless). It honestly feels so much easier to learn chemistry and her grades are higher (for reference I took farahat last quarter and a 51 was a C, I think w Chamberlin a C+ will be a B so yes it is a big jump). great teaching.
I was fine with her until she decided that she was only going to give a review for the final if 80% of us filled out her eval. She hastily introduced 2 hefty new topics in the last lecture of the quarter and we didn't get to the 80%, now I am teaching myself the material as well as studying for my other finals. There was also way too much homework.
Professor Chamberlain is a great teacher and her exams are relatively straightforward. I will admit, there is a lot of homework (I've definitely cried over my OLI homework throughout the quarter), but she curves nicely and actively wants her students to succeed. Only take Chamberlain if your other classes don't have much of a work load.
Seeing her reviews from 2016 and seeing how much people hate her in the past, I'm surprised she didn't change at all in 2023. Like miss, you had 7 years to improve but you didn't. The people who rated her high are probably those who had chemistry experience from AP chem. She expects a lot but it's hard when some don't have chem experience.
way too much homework.
her hw isnt heavy at all. literally just 2 hw per week, 10 tries, and it shows solution after each attempt, so everyone should get 100% on the hw. labs are outside of her control, its determined by the department, no reason to complaint to her. those who complaint about tests being hard are just bad at high school algebra.
Anyone who says that Chamberlain's class isn't hw heavy and that we had under two homework assignments per week is literally lying. We have 2-3 OWLs, 2-3 prelabs, 2-3 post-labs, at least 1 pre-lecture, and 3-5 OLIs to do EVERY. WEEK. despite this, 4 tests (final included) make up 71% of our grade + she releases test study info THE DAY BEFORE a test
Honestly, her lectures were not bad. Lots of good examples, very interactive with the class, willing to discuss and work through problems. Homework was a little much, but she said she was willing to change the amount in the future. The tests were kind of insane in my opinion. Overall not terrible, but you gotta pay attention in class.
I don't know where the hate comes from. She's a great professor and really cares about students. The class itself is really hard and a lot of work but if you try it's hard to not pass since she curves the tests so much. Would give a 5 but she posts a lot of stuff last minute which is annoying.
She doesn't really act on the feedback that she receives. Almost everyone in class had a problem with the way OLI worked (glitches, way TOO much work, no to grade) yet made no changes to the req. The 2nd mt was horrible, but she didn't use that as a sign to make MT 3 diff. Still has yet to provide us any good resources to study for our final with.
She gives so much homework. She is not a bad lecturer, but she gives an unnecessary amount of homework. Also, she posts a lot of study material for tests last minute. For example, our final is Thursday and she only posted the study guides on Tuesday. In addition, she DID NOT TEACH a lot of the important material that will be on the final.
I have never had a professor give so much homework out of all my years in college. While the professor is nice and all, there is no way she expects us to complete hours and hours of hw a week and also give us three midterms plus final that we are supposed to do good on? I felt like I had to focus more on getting homework done instead of learning!
This being the first chem class in college for me was very difficult. The 3 midterms were very difficult for me and I'm not sure about my grade since the curve is at the end after the final. The workload is very heavy with both OWL and OLI, on top of prelabs & postlabs. Dr. Chamberlain was clear in lectures but the course was just rigorous & hard.
she assigns way too much work, gives us study guides and study materials for exams THE DAY BEFORE, and doesn't care about students at all. I spent all my time just trying to complete homework adn not even learnign chemistry.
Crazy amount of homework, asks for feedback then doesn't change anything, adds extra stress to students by only curving final course grades, no final study guide/practice and waits two days before the exam to tell us, had no final review session since some of us failed to complete course eval, the list goes on. Don't waste your time on her.
She has pretty good lectures and records them too. Lots of information packed into one lecture; you will be there until the last minute. She assigns lots of work so you will be doing chem until you want to sob. Don't take her unless you know how to study efficiently and well, because her tests are so hard. Also not sure if curve exists.
Chamberlain was a very frustrating professor. She gave us a midterm the week before finals and then decided to use the single lecture after that to introduce new content instead of just reviewing for the final. Tests were usually pretty difficult and she gave A LOT of homework. She also did not change anything after asking for feedback.
For reference, I Do Not Like chem. Yes this class was difficult, but it's a weeder course, that's how they are. Dr. Chamberlain made it much easier than it had to be though. I really enjoyed her lectures and I appreciated all the examples we did in class. Every week she would gather all our due dates in one place so we could stay on track.
A very nice and sweet professor but the content is very heavy. Stay focused on the homework (OWL and OLI). I'm not a chem person so it was a rough quarter to process.
This professor made me dislike chemistry much more than I already did. It honestly felt like she thought her class was the only class on our schedule. We had tons of homework, assignments and labs due weekly. She speed ran the last lecture which had material that was on the final. We also received our final study guide the day before the exam.
Professor Chamberlain was a sweet lady BUT this class was very homework-heavy, leaving less time for assignments for other classes. She had us do 3 midterms, with one being a week before the final. It was even more frustrating how we got "a final study" guide that wasn't even a true study guide TWO DAYS before our exam.
Honestly, Chamberlin is a good prof. Didnt realize the OLI was more helpful than the practice tests, but it's fine. Her lectures saved me and I learned a lot, but ya the final was a bit unfair. She is much better than Farhat and u can see it w the avg grades (retaker from his class here). Yes, she is hard, but you will learn and do better in chem.
I scored an A+ in this class with a weak chem background Yet she still made me hate chem. The good: Very nice, lectures are good, exams reasonable. The bad: labs never aligned with the lectures The ugly: The OLI Homework. Never aligned with the class, had things not taught, gave wrong answers, very long. Prof needs to see what she is assigning.
Chamberlain is super nice but she can get annoying. 3 midterms, 1 final. OLI is a killer because she makes it mandatory. Lecture slides and practice exams not really helpful for exams. OLI is the best success tool to pass her class. Curve was generous. Organized class but boring and long lectures.
There are a lot of low ratings but Professor Chamberlin does care about her students. She is very interactive during lectures and spends a lot of time answering questions. Her midterms have been a little tough but if you study what she recommends you will probably do pretty good. Overall I really enjoyed her teaching style.
OLI was mandatory and we probably had around 12 hours of homework per week. Asks for student feedback but does not take or use it. Lectures were confusing and not related to homework or lab. Save your GPA and do not take Chamberlain. I liked her as a person, but not as a professor.
I enjoyed Dr. Chamberlain's lectures and she was caring. However, the online HW on 2 platforms (OWL & OLI) could get overwhelming at times and having 3 midterms made it feel like we were constantly studying. This class was very work-intensive, but if you put in the work you'll succeed. She provides a good amount of resources for studying.
She assigns a lot of work, so it always feels like I'm studying. She also has 3 exams plus a final, which is quite a lot. The lectures don't align with the labs, so understanding the labs can be a challenge.
As many other people said: SO MUCH HOMEWORK. In one week we had two quizzes, 4-6 homework assignments (about half an hour to an hour each), pre-lab, and post lab. There were three exams, including one the week before finals. She gave extra credit, but didn't apply it if you got full points so you couldn't boost your grade. Generous curve. She cares
Dr.Chamberlain is a nice and caring professor who broke down questions step by step on the lecture so it's really easy to follow her. If you want just passing she'd be a good fit. However, 3 midterms + huge amounts of homework make it very stressful to get a good grade.
Very organized and cares about her students.
There was so much homework it was sometimes unmanageable but she said she would fix that for other classes so idk. She really nice and you can tell she cares about her students and the classes she teaches.
I loved professor chamberlain but her tests really weren't fair. She would put the hardest version of problems on the exams, and expect you to think outside the box to figure them out within 50 minutes. There was an unmanageable amount of homework, and she lectures so slowly, that we didn't even cover half the content on the final. Avoid.
She's such an amazing professor! Genuinely sparked my interest in chemistry again after 2A and 2B crushed my soul. The curves aren't great but that's only cuz she has such high averages. I'd rather take a class with high averages and no curve than one where everyone is failing.
Professor Chamberlain is very caring and approachable. Very organized too so it's easy to know when stuff is due or the exams are. Practice exams don't have the problems worked out and just the answers in the key but are just like the exams will be. I would take the class again.
The nature of chemistry is hard, thats just the facts. Prof Chamberlain was easily the best chem professor I have ever had. She is knowledgeable, joyful, and willing to help you learn. I wish she could teach me every science class. One thing I will note is tests seem to be more like OWL questions than the discussion wkshts.
Sig-figs will be your worst enemy but an otherwise cool professor, a little slow as she does lengthy Q&As during lectures which result in students having to do more pre-lecture vids outside of class. Very accessible and exams were well designed, short, and concise (outside of final which is designed by all professors teaching that class).
Professor Chamberlain is a very nice person and a great chemistry lecturer. Prioritizes helping students with questions, and lecture slides are neat and helpful. Homework is mostly OWL and pre-lecture quizzes. Exams are pretty similar to practice ones, leading to fairly high averages, and not too big a curve. Had a great experience overall though!
I really liked the way Dr. Chamberlain taught; she would make annotations on the presentation she prepared for each chapter. The class basically has no curve like other reviews stated. Course was hybrid; had pre-lec assignments day before so you're basically studying everyday which personally helped me. Exams were pretty fair as well.
I am suprised by how bad some of these ratings are on here. Julia is one of the nicest profs i have had at Davis and her exams are also quite resonable if right effort is put in. Her practice exams are quite similar to what she puts on the exams so most of them aren't that bad. However, she is slow lecturer and and takes too long in OHs as well.
There was practically no curve for this class. The other professors I had for CHE 2A/2B at least curved and that helped a bit. CHE 2C is pretty hard and no curve makes it challenging. The professor is good though and the lectures were very helpful. I'd say make sure you ask for help and study before midterms/finals.
I don't understand why Dr. Chamberlain has such a low rating on RMP because I thoroughly enjoyed having her for CHE2C! It is true that she doesn't curve her exams, but the questions on the actual exams are very similar to her practice exam questions. Her Q&A times during each lecture were also very helpful in clearing up student's questions.
- long prelecture video --> first 15-20 mins of class was review of those videos - 3 midterms + 1 final - little curving (grade cutoffs are similar to traditional ones with 2-3% lowered) - very kind and likes when people attend her O.H. - some test Qs are more difficult than practiced - practice MT are exact same format as real thing
Gen chem is a tough course at Davis in my opinion, especially since you're likely a freshman, but having Chamberlain eases the difficulty immensely. She is insanely organized and clearly cares deeply about her students. She always answers questions and goes out of her way to learn names and faces. Would absolutely recommend her.
Dr. Chamberlain was the absolute best general chemistry professor I had here at UC Davis. Her lectures and class as a whole was so well organized. She speaks so eloquently and clearly and her slides were so well made that just studying those, I was able to pass the class. Lots of hw but its worth it. I wish she taught every class here at UC Davis
I hated her in che2a. she's ok now. but she has 3 olis due over thanksgiving break. unforgivable. she has a soothing voice. she seems to know a lot about gentle parenting. she definitely knows a lot about chemistry. she curves.
Chamberlain is "eh". Her lectures are 50/50 worth attending. Usually she teaches it hybrid where you really learn the "how" before the lecture itself and during she covers the rest of the material and uses remaining time for examples. Her timing for exams and homework is poor, and doesn't give room to study between most recent material and exams.
Prof Chamberlain is obv very familiar with the topics and is really good at explaining them. She records lectures and posts her notated slides so going to class is not necessary. She does answer every question people ask in class, which is good and bad bc it took a lot of time. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class and read the textbook.
I don't really like this professor. Her lectures are pretty good, but also pretty useless because it doesn't really help with homework or exams. I self-taught myself the entire quarter. Her homework system is buggy and her exams can be unfairly hard, especially that final exam. Overall, there's just better, only take her if you have to.
Chamberlain is so organized and explains concepts so well. If you put in the work her class is easy. She gives so many practice exams and the homework is helpful! She is by far the best chem prof I have had!
Such a kind and caring professor. Will do her best to make you succeed. The content can be difficult but if you use your resources it'll definitely benefit you. Class is divided into two parts: online and in person. Online you're introduced to topics and in class you'll further those topics and ask questions.
Lectures are well organized and are concise. However, be prepared to take many exams and do a lot of assignments this quarter. Pre-lecture videos and OLI can stack up, so try to do them in advance. If you manage to go to a majority of the lectures, do all your assignments ON TIME, trust me, you will pass this class easily.
Took Chamberlain for 2A and was willing to give her another shot for 2C. I regret it. Her class is unnecessarily hard. As for chem profs at Davis, she is okay, but not the best. You have to do SO much lecture outside of class, and expectations are unclear. Exams are the hardest practice problems. I would avoid -- super frustrating class.
People gotta stop complaining, although HW was buggy, she gave all points back to ensure we get what we deserve. Curve was good compared to other quarters, 89.5+ is a solid A. Put the work in, do the practice and understand it, and youll be well off.
I loved Chamberlain! She's been my favorite Chemistry professor I've had. I believe if you take advantage of all the resources she gives and put your best effort forward, you'll do well. It certainly isn't an easy class, but she prepares you well for the exams, which are challenging but fair. I definitely recommend Chamberlain :)
I dont usually write reviews on here but I really do love Chamberlain. I've always struggled in genchem but she really does care about her students and makes herself very accessible. The grading rubric was 3 midterms, one final, OLI homework, lab, and surveys. She gave lots of practice exams and the homework wasn't horrible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER DIFFICULT STEM CLASS. The amount of homework was extremely difficult to balance. Similarly, there are pre-lecture videos that are just lectures since she decided she would go over a singular problem with the entire class. Tests are the most difficult problems too, so be prepared.
I like her teaching style very much. Hard, lots of contents but helpful and organized. I rather take the pro than those who are easy but cannot learn anything at all. Do need a lot of effort.
Very good lecturer(provides sufficient examples and explains concepts well), but her tests are pretty difficult. The worst thing for me was the final--she announced a question count but gave us abt 10 more than she had said(non-MC), which is crazy. Lots of homework, which had typos so you wouldn't know why you'd be wrong.
Great at lecturing but you must keep up with her pre lectures or you will get behind. Helpus understand the material but takes really long when answering questions. Does not curve much at all. What you get is most likely what you end with.
Do not take if you can not teach yourself. She ran out of time to teach the content and left our class a whole unit to teach ourselves 5 days before the final. She goes over the most basic problems in class then fails to go over any problems with complexity. My tutor described her as evil.
While she is nice she only goes over easy questions so we think the exam will have similar questions but the exams have questions we have never seen and are SO HARD. Not only that she does not really explain anything and the homework is also really hard. I had to get a tutor to half-way understand what was even going on in the class.
Her exams are way harder than the practice and does not even give study guides we only have previous test material. Her curve also is not that great and in class she only completes easy questions. During review session she got stuck on her own questions and didn't even know how to do them.
Don't listen to the bad reviews. She wasn't that bad whatsoever. Her review material she gives before midterms and finals help. Julia Chamberlain is very enthusiastic about chemistry and wants all of her students to succeed. As long as you are diligent about the homework and do your part in taking the time to understand the material you'll be fine
very solid lecturer + online textbook/homework can be very annoying (buggy, sometimes too much). + exams are very fair if you do practice problems, worksheets.. biggest downside is how poorly she handled the preparation for finals. she rushed the last unit, leaving us very panicked and to fend for ourselves before the big test.
Way too much homework. You barely have any leftover time to actually study for the exams because of how much homework is due every week. Lectures are fast-paced and she teaches the material as if we are supposed to know it already. I studied all day every day and still got a mediocre grade.
There is a lot of homework and some she does not go over all the course material (textbook/readings required if you have no previous knowledge). She is very interactive in her lectures and she will remember your name if you sit in front and answer her (which is a plus). Her tests are easy (easier than discussion problems).
The homework was tough but not a big part of the grade, and it also helped for the tests. Discussion worksheets were a little tough but were also not required. The midterms and final were easier than the discussion worksheets, and were also curved. Her lectures are fast-paced and she lectures right up to the end of class.
Really good professor, she goes through things very clearly in lecture and works out lots of sample problems. Carefully answers all questions. Lots of hw (but it prepares you really well for exams). The end part of the class was a bit rushed so I wish she'd left for time for it & the discussion worksheets were crazy hard (but then exams feel easy).
Very nice person and very helpful lectures (goes over a lot of examples albeit a bit slow). Exams weren't bad but also not easy. Rushed the last section but questions on the final relating to it were relatively gentle. OLI's could get annoying and overwhelming so do them early as they are your best test-prep resource.
Her test are really hard but she gives lots of resources to study from. I like the OLI hw program because it's an interactive textbook with practice problems but it is a bit glitchy. Her lectures are well organized and she's really good at explaining the concepts. Lots of hw but it prepares you for the miderms.
Her lectures were fast-paced, but she is a strong lecturer. She doesn't put anything on the exams that she didn't go over in class, so I'd strongly recommend going to lectures. Her homework is heavy but it preps for the exams really well. Her exams weren't that bad either.
This professor wasn't horrible but I definitely struggled to grasp concepts especially when we went over manageable example problems in lecture only to see an amped-up, inconsistent, and more difficult question on midterms and exams. The class average was somewhere around 55-60%, the final was just unfair but the curves were extremely generous.
I loved how passionate she was about chem; homework is extremely tedious but I recommend going through the textbook to relearn lecture topics; the midterms were not bad but the final was a lot more difficult, but very lecture based which was good. I wouldn't recommend studying off of the homework
Chamberlain is definitely one of the better Chem department lecturers - although she typically teaches 2C, her 2A this quarter was far improved from what I hear it used to be. A fair amount of homework but the curve is very generous and tests have no curveballs.
Chamberlain was my favorite professor in the CHE 2 series. Her lectures were clear and always included the information and examples that would be on the midterms. Her midterms are also identical to the many practice tests that she provides and the questions/grading were sensible. Her final exam was long and difficult.
curve is awful. cares about students is true. but isnt worth it. tests were horrible and she was always getting stuff wrong during lecture. study guides dont help at all too. too much homework, ur practically drowning in chem work all week. take any other professor than her.
previous ratings make her sound like a bad prof. she only had 2 midterms and a final. curve was quite generous as the class average was fairly low. there was no surprises in terms of things that were on tests. heavy on homework but it will help you understand the material being talked about in class. fairly good at explaining concepts in class.
Long but interesting and thorough lectures, takes time to answer questions in class. Study guides very similar to tests.
Chamberlain's lectures are thorough and engaging, though the workload can be heavy. The tests are challenging but fair, and the curve is generous. For study prep, tools like unstuckstudy ai and the textbook have been helpful.
Great lectures, she goes in depth, helpful with questions, and is passionate, definitely don't want to skip them, lots of resources too. Discussion is mandatory but can be helpful as well, labs are labs. Exams were difficult but fair, homework was fine but could be a bit much. Also did go a little too slow and ended up rushing through near the end.
Solid professor. Made an effort to simplify the complex concepts of chemistry (and did a pretty good job). Easy to follow her lectures, and was super helpful when questions were asked. She really showed that she wanted her students to be successful. Would take her again!
Bad ratings are from ppl who got a bad grade and want to blame it on the prof. Dr. Chamberlain is a great professor. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow and she always stops to answer questions. Apart from that, she's super sweet and it shows how much she cares about her students. Just put in the effort and you'll do fine.
Chem is a challenging subject, and she didn't make it much easier. When I took it, we had three midterm exams. Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, and Unit 4. The Unit 3 exam was on Tuesday of Week 10. She tried to teach all of Unit 4 on Thursday's lecture, and it was 1/4 of the final exam. I felt lucky that I passed.
She is a good person and cares about her students. Always answers questions during lecture and gives thorough explanations on material. Provides a lot of resources to do well. If you do the homework and all her recommended assignments you will do well in her course. The difficulty is on par with other chemistry courses but her lectures are helpful.
Three midterms and one final. NO CURVE
There are 3 midterms + a final! Lecture was an hour 3 times a week, but lecture was never useful. I wish I knew that Olí Torous(the online readings she assigns) is more helpful then that lecture itself. The midterms were difficult but were graded on a curve, and most of them were C average. This course shouldn't be taken with other stem classes.
I love Prof Chamberlain, I also had her for 2A. She started doing prelecture content, which seemed annoying at first, but she was actually able to get through all content without rushing at the end (like in 2A). Exams are at a normal level of difficulty for a chem class. The final was lowkey so long though. She is so sweet if you ask questions!
Great lecturer, she is always on the point and clear explaining confusing topics. Also remembers names too! Her homework however (on OLI) is prone to many, many mistakes and typos often leading to a lot of points being unnecessarily deducted (she does try to fix it). Midterms were very fair, but the final was extremely brutal in my opinion.
She's a nice person and is very passionate about the content. It's gen-chem so it's gonna be rough no matter what but her lectures are great breakdowns of how to go about concepts. Crap ton of outside of class work but it is good for learning how to do things. Overall not the worst pick to have for this class, very little curve tho.
Had her for 2a and 2c and she's still one of my favorite profs here. Her 2c class was a lot less work and much more organized than her 2a class. She lectures at a slow pace (good for most) and answers every question. HW was manageable. Gave a lot of practice exams that are largely reflective of the actual exams. Some trick questions on exams tho.
Chamberlain is hands down one of the best gen chem professors. Do her practice exams, go to lecture, understand the concepts well, think a little outside the box and you will do great!
Dr. Chamberlain cares about her students, but has a teaching style that may not suit everyone. She assigns pre-lecture videos & quizzes, while lectures focus mostly on answering questions from those who already have a good understanding of the material. Tests are much harder than the practice tests she provides. Ended up hiring a private tutor.
Professor Chamberlain is a very thoughtful instructor. Although her midterms and finals are tough as they are in most cases harder than the practice exams she gives. I had her for 2A and 2B, and can say she is one of my favorite general Chem professors, but do be wary she gives a lot of hw.
My favorite chem prof at davis. I was anxious to take this class and chem isn't my strongest subject, but Chamberlain genuinely cares about her students and her lectures are very engaging. If you show up and try you can succeed in this class. I'm almost sad this quarter is over just for her. Definitely recommend!
Test FRQ includes hard/tricky questions unlike ones she teaches during lecture. But as a whole, the midterms were decently fair. The final was absolutely brutal, I questioned if I could even pass the class after it, and it dropped me a letter grade. Her "hybrid" format is more lecture on top of regular lecture. Take another professor if possible.
Her class was a little tough, she's a kind woman and is very open to answering questions and going over topics during office hours. However, the pre-lecture assignments start to get annoying and the tests often include small details from lectures (element trivia???). She provides a lot of practice exams. The final was brutal though.
She had pre-lecture activities and recorded her lectures. She explained the concepts clearly and we were given practice exams that followed the same structure as the actual exams. She had a lot of resources for this class. Go to tutoring and office hours and you'll be set. Amazing professor.
Dr. Chamberlain is a really good professor. She provides a ton of resources for you to do well and does a lot of examples in lecture. Homework is a bit annoying but it really helps sink the material into your brain. People complain that the exams are hard but her curves are very generous.
By far best gen chem professor I've had at Davis. Organized, engaging lectures. Actually helpful homework and not just busy work. Do NOT sleep on the study guides!!! Only reason didn't get an A was cuz I focused on other classes for the final.
Practice exams taught concepts and sometimes were not even related to the actual midterms. Super test heavy and curve is mid
Dr. Chamberlain is one of the best che professors. She teaches the class very well and provides amazing resources(many practice tests and extra resources) My main problem is that she writes the test in a really confusing way. She finds the smallest details and puts it on the test. The final was super rough. Tricky problems are common on her exams
her lectures are clear as she always gives examples and practices. fair exam difficulties. large curves. accessible in OH. she always cares her student. such a sweet person.
honestly, I took this winter 2024, and ifykyk. She was behind and made us fend for ourselves with the titration problems. When the long answer came up in the final, people in my lecture hall started crying. She is nice and will remember your name. She is easy to follow, but she loves to take hard exams. also, the prac exams were Diums.
EXAMS ARE SO HARD!!!!!!! lectures are good and she is very caring but her exams are so hard for no apparent reason. Never like any of the practice exams that she provides and will always give you the hardest version of that sort of question on the exam. Homework also is awful too for not being worth that much of the overall grade.
Dr. Chamberlain is so sweet and caring. She is the best professor I have in CHEM. Her lectures are really great and cover all materials in tests. -- no need to self teach:) Her tests are fair! She has detailed study guides to help students prepare for exams. TONS of resources in this course. Manage your time wisely and you'll be fine.
Great professor as long as you keep up with lectures. Her content is really easy to digest as her lectures are engaging. Not a lot of homework. Pre lecture and quizzes are easy to do and helpful.
Dr Chamberlain is the absolute best. Her lectures are useful and tests and very fair. The pre lectures are a little annoying but helpful if you give them the time. She very clearly cares about her students and does an amazing job in creating a positive learning environment. whatever she is being paid, it needs to be quadruped.
Pretty standard chem class. Exams were straight forward; not too many surprises. Most of the work is asynchronous and online so stay on top of it. Was not a fan of the prelecture recordings; all of the course was taught through them. Could've gotten an A with a lighter course load. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS
Chamberlain just taught too slow for my liking. It felt like at times we could spend 18 minutes one question and not progress in knowledge.
Please trust me. She is amazing as a professor and a human-being. Genuinely cares for her students and passionate about teaching the knowledge of Chemistry. Low ratings because of unsatisfied grades/ course load doesn't truly reflect anything. This is college, it shouldn't be easy. Everyone suffer, put in effort and it will worth it. Stop blaming.
Chamberlain is a sweet lady, but she gives lots of homework. Lots of others said the same, if you have to take her, just know that it's a lot to keep up with and you'll have to study daily. She won't be mandating OLI in the future, so that should make it a bit easier. Overall, she's okay. Going to office hours truly helped along with discussion!
Chamberlain is a such a kind and caring professor, however the workload is very annoying with all of the pre-lec materials (can't skip cuz she'll finish lectures/there will be a knowledge gap), OLI participation (1% of gade), and homework. My biggest complaint is how her tests didn't really match up her practice ones, I found them way harder. :(
As someone whos weak subject is chem,Chamberlain's love for chemistry and care for the well being of her students really pushed me to put so much effort into this class. The homework was reasonable, some were like 6 questions max, and helped so much on concepts I was struggling with. Yes her exams can be difficult but they are very doable,I PROMISE.
Do the practice tests at all costs. I learned more there than in any lecture she gave. She's a nice person who grades hard. Lectures are recorded and OWL hw. Prelecture videos suck but they led to 1 question prelecture quizes that are 1% of your grade. Every bit helps in a hard class. She's definitely way better in 2C than 2A.
Dr. C was nice if a little passive aggressive sometimes but did try to answer peoples questions (sometimes made students more confused). She really cares and her lecture style is interesting & I did enjoy it. Lots of pre-lecture stuff = concise (in topic) lecture. Exams were okay w/ few random questions from unemphasized part of lecture. Hate OLI
Dr. Chamberlain is the best professor I had for my chemistry courses so far. She explains concepts very well in lectures and is willing to answer students' questions. Exams are fair. Use the study guides and practice exams! I feel like three midterms are easier than final. Pay attention to tiny details to get good grades!
Dr. Chamberlain is a great professor. Pretty useful study guides and annotated slides posted. You do need to spend a lot of extra time doing the assignments and pre-lectures to succeed in this class. Spend like 5 hours every week studying chem and get an A finally.
Great lecturer who explains concepts clearly. Exams are fine, usually some questions are trickier since they're question types not gone over in lecture/not in practice exams. Exam grading rubric is kinda tough sometimes, and you gotta self-teach beyond lectures. Occasional typos on exams that could've led people to lose points if not called out.
Dr. Chamberlain is a solid professor for Che2c but be warned- if your class has high test averages, like ours did, there WILL NOT be much of a curve. What I liked was how friendly and approachable she is as a professor, and how savvy she is with technology. The prelecture videos, however, were very time consuming & having 3 midterms was stressful.
Chamberlain was a refresher after taking Enderle for 2A and 2B. She does do a lot more online stuff since her lectures are 50 mins. She's a good explainer and lecturer though in my opinion and her midterms and final exam were relatively the same as her practice exams. Just be ready though, since she does a lot of pre-lecture video/quizzes stuff.
really nice
VERY small curve (91.55=A, 89.53=A-), but it was bc we had high avgs (74,71,75) MT difficulty I thought was fair, but the final was a bit harder. Really liked the use of Piazza so that I can ask questions whenever instead of going to OH. MT+Final is 69% of your grade (lol) and rest is HW, lab, etc. She's a good prof, choose her over Farahat.
She is one of the best chem profs I ever had. Her exams are VERY fair(which is why our avgs were so high) and she offers a lot of resources when preparing for exams. She is very accessible outside of class and very approachable.
Great professor. Gave amazing lectures to students and broke down the content into understandable parts. The homework for this professor's course was relevant but relatively heavy. Take care of the pre-lecture contents since they're major components of exams.
Meh. Not much to say. Not the best
If you're someone who learns from lectures, Chamberlain is really good and all her examples given in class are relevant to the test material so even though there are a bunch of pre-lecture videos her slower pace helps you understand material better. But there's not that much room for error on exams since they're only 50 points each
Chamberlain was amazing, she was super energetic when teaching and always extremely caring. She ran a partially flipped classroom, so you would watch short videos on the upcoming notes and then review those topics when with her in class. Her midterms and the final exam were fair. She did give a slight curve at the end of the class too.
Took her for both 2C and 124A. She taught 124A for the first time. 1 SPS and 1 Achieve assignment each week, with JITs before lectures. Her lectures are great, but I hope there can be more practice exams. TBH her exams are hard. I'm barely able to finish in the given time.
3 MTs and a final and all of them are horrendously difficult, especially the final exam. theres some nuclear chem and ochem tested too towards the end. i like that she posts annotated notes of her slideshow presentations and shes a good lecturer overall but the pre-lecture assignments are what make me not want to take another one of her classes
This is feedback from student on her first time lecturing in CHE 4C in fall 2025 with 1 section only. She is a really nice and approachable professor and has a lot of LAs in her lecture and discuss to answer problems on time about the materials. 3 midterms, not that easy with avg of 67% and final 64% but curve is good. GL on future 4C!
