WORST TEACHER EVER!!! READS STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOOK FOR NOTES AND TAKES TEST MATERIAL FROM A "OUTSIDE SOURCE"
Horrible. Lectures are very boring. She reads straight from the book and even if you study what she tells you her exam questions are not what she tells you to study. I Barely Passed. . . VERY HARD CLASS.
horrible teacher. she tells you that you need to know almost everything from every chapter and that you will be tested on it when yet half of it actually makes it on the test. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
The worst teacher ever. She is condesending and ignorant to the people who cant do bio. She is boring and dull and cannot lecture!!! Staring at the wall and counting cracks is more enjoyable than listening to her or in my case zoning her out. If you do not like Bio and do not understand Bio do not take it with her!

Not a good professor at all. Could not stand to go to her lectures and then I stopped going to the labs. Sure I failed the class but it was better than having to deal with her. Ugh, dont take her...I was really good in bio..i got a 92 on her first test and a 88 on her second, but i just could NOT stand her or her class. Had to get out.
Very helpful, caring teacher. Did anything she could to assist her students and help them pass the class. Those that did not like her felt the way they did due to ignorance and laziness.
Prof. Held did anything she could to help her students. If you failed this class something is wrong with you!!! I never had a teacher who would go out of her way for her students. She is caring and helpful. People who don'y like her are lazzzzy!! They're just lazy and don't try hard!!
She was not helpful, she was degrading. She approached the class like we were all whiz kids in bio. I don't know about you but I hate bio to begin. Couldn't have been more unclear. She takes the pictures out of the book and tries explaining them and fails. If you ask a question she acts like something is wrong with you. HORRIBLE TEACHER
Prof. Held is not that bad...what are you people talking about?? if you did good on the tests, what idiot would not go to the lab? LAB WAS THE EASIEST PART!! she let everyone make lab quizes up if you wanted a boost in your grade...what more culd you ask for?

Excellent Teacher! Very knowledgable, wants her students to do well, and does everything she can to help them do so. As any other LAB science with any professor, you do have to work for your grade, but i defintely would recommend Professor Held to anyone that needs to take an life science at RIC!
Her lecture are just her poorly trying to explain diagrams. She seems like she doesn't know alot about the subject. When you ask a question, she gives a round about answer. Exams are on the entire text. It is a hard class to begin with think she would be alittle easy.I do not recommand taking her at all.
Awesome! Just study about two hours for the test, and Labs are the easiest!!! what else could you ask for?
You have to work for your grade, but she is there to help you in any way. If you don't apply yourself, don't expect anything, but if you do..she makes it possible to do well.
I found that I got better grades on the tests by never going to class and studying on my own. She is totally unaccomidating to students and acts like its a bother to answer valid questions in class. Its a 100 level course and I found myself studying harder than my 300 level, when the information she said would be on the test wasn't even hinted at
She is nice, but unclear at times. She does seem to care what grade you receive. Lecture tests were somewhat okay as long as you study the material and lab quizzes required lots of information to memorize. She allowed us to make up extra points for the lab quizzes and for the lecture exams, in-class extra credit points were given.

She is a horrible teacher: DO NOT TAKE. She gives notes in class by reading right from the book, which means that you don't have to read ahead of time. Her exams are the opposite of what she tells you to study for. In lab if you ask for her help she will assist you but you mainly do the cat disection with lab partners.
this teacher is not a good teacher, she is very confusing & all she does is read EXACTLY what is in the text book, she makes you memorize every diagram in each chapter when she only puts like 2 on the test, she expects you to all get A's but throws all this EXTRA baggage at you..AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!! or you'll be sorry
Difficult class; don't expect to get everything you need to succeed from lecture; you must read and take notes from the text yourself; study frequently; the amount of material you must know is overwhelming at times; she will help you in any way she can if you ASK; do not fall behind on your reading and organize your material; you'll learn lots!
She is very tough and has students memorize a lot more material then most anatomy teachers (ie. diagrams). She is available for help. Her tests are extremely difficult and chapter objective handouts are not always correct.

Hardest class I have ever taken. She expects you to know a million little details. Her lectures were unclear and read from a book. Do not take a class with her.

Professor Held is the worst professor I've ever had. I've never met anyone who didn't want to help students the way she does. She's a snobby, terrible, terrible person. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!

the lab is fun, but man can she talk! im surprised no one has said that. she can be a bit condescending, which is fine. the exams are VERY particular.
Almost everyone failed. She will state after every weekly quiz how its the fundamentals of biology and there is a lot. Take bio 108 instead its easier I've heard.
She's really not a good professor. Sit close to the front because she mumbles over herself. She spends more time talking about what you should be reading outside of class than actually teaching. Her lectures have nothing to do with what's on the exam. If you don't have to take her, then I wouldn't!
She is a pretty good teacher; her lectures can sometimes be hard to follow, but as long as you keep up with the reading, you'll do fine. People who fail this class do so because they are lazy and don't want to do the work required.
definitely tough but from the start she said it would be. If you put in effort and go over the material outside of class, youre fine. if you answer all objectives you'll do well on the exams-if youre lazy and arent willing to work, youll fail just like in any other class. diagrams in class help. very nice person if you give her a chance.
by far the worst teacher ever. is not willing to help students at all. nothing like asking a question and being told to a run around answer that has nothing to do with the initial question. you pretty much need to memorize the entire text,lab quizzes are harder than lecture exams. things you have never gone over in class or text will be on the test

Does not teach well at all, one of the worst professors i have had she doesnt teach anything but pictures and when you ask a question she gets mad! i do NOT recommend taking her if you are registered for her class switch now while you still have the chance!!!!!! you will regret it if you dont!
Professor Held answered any questions I had, and would clearly demonstrate on lab subjects to get her point across. There is not a lot of active teaching while students listen, but the content of the class was best learned hands on. Approachable teacher, but you have to ask the questions you have.
I don't agree with the complainers. She is a tough professor and actually expects you to study (what a novel idea). If you are going into the medical field, and complaining about learning, then I wouldn't want you as my health care professional. College isn't about what you learn in class only. The notes don't cover all the material you need.
Class was overwhelming and lecture did not help me. It was easier for me just to learn on my own from the book and other materials. Did not have the same teacher for lab though-so I am no help in that dept. She seemed approachable but wasnt much help when it came down to it.
Nice Person. It's a hard class but she is willing to work with you. She gives you objectives for each exam and is always available for office hours. pre read the chapters before lecture and go to class, she gives extra credit assignments toward exams!
Honestly, probably one of the most difficult professors. The notes are from her incomprehensible lecture the tests a are on 4 chapters and all the little foot notes and could only be 88 questions long. If you want to pass anatomy don't take it with her!
Prof is so helpful and provides a tremendous amnt of resources. She really goes out of her way t make sure we have all the matrials we need to do well in clss. Antmy is a very difficlt course no matter the prof, she cnt be blamed for that! If yr not willing to put this amnt of work into studyng, rethink yr career in nursing bc it jst gets tougher!
She requires students to know a tremendous amount of information beyond what other anatomy teachers require. If you want a simple and understandable class dont take it with her. A typical exam includes multipe choice, matching, pictures an open ended questions. Very monatone an pointless to attend lecture. Better off reading the book yourself.
Don't do it. This is my second time retaking this class, and its hard. She is not comfortable teaching and she treats us as if we are all biology majors.I get A's and B's in all my other classes but for some reason nobody at RIC knows how to teach biology.
Professor Held is very helpful, always there for you in lab, very informative and articulate. I don't understand the negative reviews because she is very clear of what is needed for the course. Anatomy is tough and you absolutely need to study A LOT and not rely on your professor, whomever it is, for everything. Her lectures really helped

Prof Held is a good professor. Anatomy itself is not an easy subject no matter who teaches it. Reading the book and putting in many hours of studying is the only way to do well with any teacher. She is very nice and will help you with anything. The exams aren't easy, but if you really put the time you'll do fine. Shes one of easier prof @ RIC
I am taking this course because it is a requirement for the education program. This should have been a very basic intro class but Professor Held makes everything so much more confusing than it ould be. She is approachable after class ONLY! There is no clas inraction and if you ask a question while she is reading from the powerpoint she gets so mad
She is so rude. If you try to ask questions during class she tells you its in the book, or makes you feel dumb. She gets flustered if you ask a question on the powerpoint. She goes very fast and its hard to keep up with her notes. You basically have to teach yourself Anatomy if you take her class. AVOID HELD!!

SERIOUSLY AVOID! This is my fourth year at RIC and have never encountered such an awful professor. She does not help when you have questions, is just plain RUDE, and does not teach anything. This is a basic course yet she makes it more complicated than my 400-level courses....AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Horrible. You can't even approach her to ask questions. She is extremely rude and teaches very fast paced. I have never posted about a teacher before, so this goes to show how horrible she will make your life. More than 80% of the class fails every exam. DO NOT TAKE HER!

Professor Held is one of my least favorite Professors at RIC. She gets flustered when you ask her a question and with often belittle you if you need assistance of some sort. I had her for both Lab and Lecture for Anatomy, which was the worst decision I have ever made here at RIC. I ended up retaking the class because of her lack of helpfulness.
reading all these reviews had me extremely nervous for my choice on taking her for lab and lecture. i was completely surprised by how wrong ALL these reviews were. she is a great professor. her lecture exams can be very tricky and she isn't always completely clear on what she wants you to study, but she was so helpful to any question i had.

I feel bad for her I feel as if she has some kind of teaching anxiety, sometimes it seams like she has no idea what shes talking about. She is a really nice person, but I am failing this class and working my but off. I have taught myself everything. Its kinda cool that on the tests she lets you have 2 different answers, but it doesn't help.
Get ready to work hard. Anatomy in general is hard and with this professor you really have to pay attention, review powerpoints and read from the book. Powerpoints are summarized from the book in order. Tests are very hard but lab practicals are much easier to pass. If you take it seriously and study hard you will do ok.
Anatomy is already a hard class, and she makes it 10 times more difficult. She gives you so much material to memorize and does not let you know what she expects you to know for exams. Does not lecture, makes you do worksheets to pass the time.
I enjoyed this course. LOTs of material to cover, so read and attend lectureslabs. Tests were average difficulty, but you can put a 2nd guess if you're unsure of an answer and get .5 point if it's correct. Lab was where it was difficult. Not a lot of structure as to what you were looking forshould dissect when. Ask about dissection videos
Professor Held is an excellent professor, I am assuming people are writing negative reviews because they didn't try. She is very helpful, easy to talk too. She knows her stuff, very prepared for class. Nothing she does is out of the normal and she offers a lot of extra credit. Her exams are fair, she gives you everything you'll need.
She is one of the most difficult and confusing professors I've had so far. Anatomy is already a tough subject and she makes it much more difficult. Her exams are tough, I highly recommend reading the textbook and studying every night. She is very sweet and helpful, but as a teacher, she isn't very good. I would proceed with caution.

Julia held is awesome. I actually looked her up on this site before taking her and I read a lot of bad reviews. I really don't understand why! She is fantastic. She gives objectives for each chapter. If you do them as you read, you're all set for her exams. She offers extra credit which she applies towards exam grades.
Was worried about the bad reviews, however, I'm ending this semester with a 100% exam average, and 99% class average. She gives (potentially) a full letter grade of EC for EACH exam, and the exams are EASY if you READ THE BOOK and do the OBJECTIVES. People who do poorly, just weren't ready for the volume of studying, bt Held gives you every chance
Read through her powerpoints and outline the chapters and you will do fine. Her tests are multiple choice and she has one column for your first choice and a second for your second choice so if your first answer was wrong but you got your second guess right you'll get half credit for the question.

To anyone reading poor reviews about professor Held, please know that they are coming from students who don't realize that they are in college and have to actually study for exams! Her exams are VERY straight forward, she tells you everything that will be included. Read the book, read the ppts, study the diagrams, you'll get the grade you deserve
She gives objectives for each chapter. They are completely unrelated to the exam and a waste of time. She barely teaches. If you read each chapter thoroughly you will do great. Lab is difficult because she just hands you a cat and has you figure it out on your own.
Definitely a difficult class, especially if you take it over the summer. Her lecture exams are based on the lengthy chapters, so definelty read. The lab is pretty hefty as far as studying goes but its the same for any BIO231 professor. She was very generous with scaling, organized on blackboard, offered extra credit and made videos for lab too!

Anatomy is a difficult class no matter who teaches it. Accessible outside of class & gives a lot of EC. All the tools you need she posts on blackboard if you miss a lecture It really won't affect you if you are doing your part outside of class. 5 lecture exams & 3 lab exams, grade is based out of 1000pts
Lecture exams were 100% textbook. Never looked at her powerpoint, payed attention in lecture, or looked at her objectives and had a high exam average solely by reading the book. She is awful in lab, throws things in front of you with a list and no guidance or demonstration, and gets agitated that you don't know what you're doing. Wouldn't recommend
She is a good professor and she is always willing to answer any questions you have and help. Her lectures aren't filled with everything you need to know and her powerpoints are the bare minimum of info so study the book. But, she makes it clear that you need to do your own studying. It is anatomy and you should expect to do work!! Lots of EC!
As a person she was very kind and likeable but not as a professor. Her lectures are hard to follow and she reads vaugely from her powerpoints. She provides alot of sources but alot of stuff was not refelcted on the tests. In Lab she wasnt helpful and got fustrated when you asked questions. The Text book was my only saving grace.
shes okay, i felt as if she lectures more than she teaches. in this class you have to tech yourself because if you just go to class that won't do you any good. she moves on WAY too fast. in lab she just hands you the specimen and a list and you are supposed to find everything on your own. looking at videos will help you pass her practicals.

This was the hardest class I have taken and I've never put so much time aside for a class ever. I think if you are taking this class, know that if you dont put the time in to study you will do poorly. You HAVE to study. so much material & she does a great job covering it. People should know this is a very self taught class. STUDY & take the time!!!
Worst professor ever! Just reads off of power points and sits there staring at you during lecture and lab. If you work in groups and ask for help her respond is " I don't know how to help all of you, its too many people" and walks away. Avoid taking her as much as possible.
I took Held twice (a huge mistake). She reads off of power points and a lot of her tests are book based. She does offer Extra credit, a total of 2-3 per test, but only adds about 3 points onto your final grade. The class is graded JUST from exams which total 120 points each (if you get an 86/120 it will equal a 71.) DO NOT TAKE HER!!!

Just do not take her. It was the worst decision I made to take her for BIO231. And what made it worse was the change to online classes. She is really bad. Do not explain the stuff clearly. And gets easily annoyed. During lectures its like someone just started a video tape and we have to watch til it ends. I was not able to understand anything.
Do not take any class with professor Held. Her lecture material has nothing to do with the exams and reading the text book did not help whatsoever. This class was already impossible and switching to online made it worse. She did not ease up at all even while in the middle of a global pandemic. Avoid taking her at all costs.
I found the exams to be hard. Not from the lectures, a lot from the book. She gives an outline of what will be on the exam but it is more applied knowledge rather then the definitions etc. In person she did pass around an attendance sheet and often gave extra credit worksheets.
Held created fantastic video lectures for the class online this semester and was always accessible if you had any questions. There is lots of reading and studying involved in this course, but that's expected in any college course. She's a great teacher if you're looking to take BIO100.
Professor Held was great! Very accessible outside of class and always answered emails within 1-2 days. She posted 2 lecture videos per week with clear expectations. There were 4 multiple choice tests, one of them being a non-cumulative final. If you closely read the text, listen to the lectures and ask questions this class will be a breeze.
her tests are so hard and not even from the powerpoints. she likes to give 80+ question exams with only 90 minutes to take them. DONT TAKE HER. her exams are not straight forward. only good thing is you have one 5pt assignment per chapter so its not alot of additional work but you better study and know your stuff. shes not reasonable either
She does not care about peoples Learning disabilities she just want it her way in class.
She is a very hard professor. Expects you to know and memorize EVERYTHING. The exams are extremely hard so be ready to study and read. She is very educated and knows what she is talking about just very difficult.
She brushes over incredibly dense material and expects you to pick it up immediately. There is typically a lab and lecture test every 2/3 weeks. You NEED to study at any chance you get. Tests are very hard. She didnt let me take the first exam of the year because of a form I turned in late. This class is brutal.
If you don't have a background already in anatomy you will struggle in this class. The only way of passing is if you make this class your number 1 concern which leaves no time for other classes. She will not help you in lab and will make you feel dumb for not knowing something that she went over once. She responds to emails super quickly though.
Anatomy is a very difficult class and she makes it 100x worse. She doesn't give study guides and her powerpoints have way too much info on them. Her exams are 60 questions in 60 minutes when they're online. She is the only teacher that won't let students go back on answers even though that's how we've been learning to take tests since middle school
Failed her class twice because she's so misguiding, everything she "teaches" us is something entirely different than what she tests us on. Offers almost no other graded material aside from exams.

I took this class as a gen. ed requirement and I wish I had chosen this class more carefully. Held goes over powerpoints for class and the exams are completely different from what was on the powerpoint. There are only four exams, no final, but the exams are long and difficult. The only reason I passed was because my lab grade was good.
BEFORE class I read and took notes on the chapter (there is a new chapter every class), DURING class I asked questions, AFTER class I condensed my notes (took notes on my notes), and then I read over my notes daily. Go to Professor Held or a tutor if you are struggling. Anatomy is hard overall, be prepared! Good luck :)
Okay so I'm in her class right now and I have an A- at the moment. She is awful. She will have you learning 4 chapters worth of information in 2.5 weeks and then give you an exam on it. If there is another option for professor, take it.
If you wanna go to therapy and cry 7x a week take her :) she's the reason I switched out of nursing, her exams are impossible to pass

She has good intentions and I would recommend going to her office hours, but the class if a lot more complicated than necessary.
this is the worst professor i have ever taken. in lecture she zooms through powerpoints in 40 minutes but it takes me 3 hours to write out one chapter for her test. she doesnt test anything on her powerpoints its straight from the book and even then im not sure where she even finds the questions she asks us. shes also very rude. dont take her.
While this class has a lot of information, Professor held really does want her students to succeed. She tries to provide resources for students and recommends how to tackle each chapter. She also gives objectives to focus on. Tests are graded fairly and assignments are given in addition to quizzes to earn points.
Professor Held is honestly a good professor. It's a content heavy course, she goes through PP quickly, usually a chapter per lecture and there are 5 exams (+3 lab ones) but there are lots of assignments to help gain "points." She's good at explaining material & is always willing to help! The exams are mostly based on the book so make sure you read.
She may have been the worst teacher I have ever had.She does not care about her students and makes it very clear you're a paycheck and nothing more to her.She's very strict and loves calling people out. She'll have full control of your Lab too.She will put the bare minima for work in that class while slamming you with 140 slides a week in lecture.
