She comes off as a complete egotistical **** at first..and sometimes throughout the semester, and she tries to be funny sometimes. If you understand science, you'll do well. Her tests are pretty easy, shes an ok teacher overall.
I think that **** can't teach for****!!! She just stand up tell you the definition from the book. She speaks very fast as well and you can't take notes at all...also she's really a **** for any little thing, and she would pick on you in front of the whole class....and did i mention SHECAN"TTEACH
She is a legend for failing many students. Please avoid this professor at all cost. She can not teach. Also, she speaks very fast. Her networking infomations is Bull****. As well her information in the class does not help you understanding for biology. Exam Info. came from space.
horrible teacher, simply put. she spends most of the time in class reading out loud definitions. her test are overall ok,except her multiple choice questions make no sense, its like she puts these long wordy questions on her exams just to make herself look smart.
AVOID! Simply AVOID her. The most childish and un-professional professor ever. I personally overheard her stereotyping students and criticizing their work ethics after only 2 weeks of class. If she can't answer your questions, she simply will make something up, right or most of the time, wrong.....

She was very much a *****, taught entirely too fast and was the primary reason I changed my major to something completely different than Biology. I wouldn't recommend signing up for any of her classes unless you enjoying inflicting pain upon yourself. She always sits on the counters and sh* too.
She's definately out there. I mean she'll treat you like an adult, but her prelabs are long and boring. She'll tell you if you got right/wrong answers, but you still won't make a 100 on the CT's. Go see her at her office hrs., but def go see Dr. Lepri or Tomlin if you think she graded u too hard.
All i gotta say about her is that I HATE THAT BI***...she doesn't know how to teach, she's rude, she would cuse you out in the classroom for no reason, HER TEST ARE HARD AS CRAP class average for all the test is like 68 and she doesn't curve it or anything...DANGER!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!! SHE's a BIT**
2 words...ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!
Many animal species eat there young, too bad humans don't in this case. She is the worst professor ever. I am a 4.0 GPA student who knew the material in advance and still struggled. At the end of the semester, I felt dumber. If this name pops up on your registration, change it, or if you can't, take it another semester. DO NOT TAKE LORETH.
She goes waaaay to fast and she doesnt used prepared notes, so good luck getting everything down when she says it the first time.. she cant really repeat it, b/c she will forget it right after she says it.
Just to clarify, Loreth is not truly a "Professor" but an Instructor. There is a difference. Don't let your experience with her taint you - the upper level classes (and many lower level classes) are taught by real Professors!
The course wouldn't have been too bad........if it were the only course I was taking. Unfortunately, most of us have to take more than one. Julia is not a very nice person, she's not very organized, she's too fast, if you believe in God you're an idiot to her, and no matter what she says, it's right.
This was absolutely the most horrible teacher I have ever had! She pretended to know what she was talking about, but when asked questions, she was clueless. Don't expect to get help out of class either. She tried to make anyone slightly intelligent feel pathetically stupid. She constantly degraded 4.0 students.
Yeah, I had Loreth at GTCC...Hardest class ever! Everyone failed every test...I guess she hasnt changed!
She is very helpful and will gladly repeat something more than once. She uses a lot of visual aides and is very animated. She does talk fast but she makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on!
She is really nice but she grades really hard... especially on prelabs!! If you can, try switching to another lab teacher.
Loreth is the worst professor ever! She purposefully marked me wrong on things that were right and told me wrong answers so she could justify marking me off for them. She is horribly rude and degrading. She has no clue what she is teaching at all. If you have her, you better switch!
Has the attitude she is "Superior" I have dealt with her in the past and she is a terrible lecturer and does not try to improve. She also degrades her students to others. In my experience when a teacher gets irritated with a students questions they do NOT know the answer. She does not retain the information she can recite from notes only.
She lectures for almost an hour before we even get to start the lab. She grades way too hard on the pre-labs too. I missed one of her labs and made it up with another instructor and wish I could have done that for all of them. Switch if you can, its not worth dealing with her for a whole semester.

Julia Loreth is a great teacher, especially when compared with others who also teach biology. It is obvious that bio is a hard topic, so it is impossible to pass it w/o putting in the effort regardless of who your teacher may be. I am planning on majoring in it and understand that anything really worth having is worth the work, period.
very self centered, angry when students dont understand
She thinks she's hot and funny...but she's really not. Her tests SUCK- I'm a 3.8 student and i'll be lucky to get a D. Her tests are really hard... Don't take a class with her, seriously.
She is a great teacher when it comes to getting the information across clearly. She passes around an attendance sheet but she doesnt check it, so you can skip if you want. i wouldn't reccommend skipping though; she packs a lot of info in one class. She makes it really easy to take notes from her lecture, and offers tons of extra time out of class.
Difficult teacher but very knowledgble. Uses the book a lot. Her exams are tough, but I learned a lot with her
Shes really hard...I wouldn't take her if I had the option...he test are multiple choice/fill in the blank...the average test scores have all been D's. She talks really fast and sometimes goes off in weird tangents.
You will need prayer if you have her...
I really liked her...she changed my view of biology...her test were really hard for me but i went to her office regularly and she was very helpful but then you have to remember we are in college not high school
She is a very nice teacher. Her tests are very tricky but she gives you all the notes in class. If you show up to class and tak notes and study the notes and do the review worksheets you should be fine. A really enjoyable class although the tests are hard she really takes her time to make sure you understand the material.
If you want to fail Biology and bring down your GPA, take this class. Her tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Fill in, and the average in the class was a D. Stay far far far away from this teacher.
She sometimes makes mistakes when teaching and we have to re-relearn a concept. She is also very forgetful and leaves out details then incorporates those details in later which only confuses you. She has great visuals when teaching>good graphs, images, etc to help explain.
She's impossible & not nearly as clever or funny as she thinks she is.
She is amazing! I love having her. Although we are not close to done with the class, I know I will do well. She is ALWAYS willing to help/tutor. She goes over stuff multiple times until everyone understands it. Her tests are straightforward if you study...and she even tells you some of the questions...shes super sweet and really funny too!
no text book. i mean if you like wikipedia...Which we all know is a non crediable source... sometimes thought topics were irrelavant to forensics.
One of the best professors I have had in my academic career. She delivers information in a very entertaining and energetic way. The Lecture tests are very tough but the are straight out of her notes.(Unless she states otherwise) The Final was the easiest test ever. They consisted of test questions asked on previous exams. You will really enjoy her!
over all just not a good professor, not as funny as she thinks she is, and is just a general hard-ass about everything.
i will never take another course from this professor
She is a great teacher.
After 18 years away from college I returned to take BIO 111 for my first class. This teacher is packed with enthusiasm and energy and made this class as interesting as it can get in learning any subject.
VERY sarcastic peroson
THIS IS THE BEST BIO PROFESSOR AT UNCG. HER TEST ARE HARD BUT SHE WILL WORK WITH YOU. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TAKE HER. AND SHE DROPS THE LOWEST TEST GRADE!!!
Her tests are more applied thinking than anything you do during class. Her tests do test your knowledge of material, but do it in such a way that you get confused because the questions are SO difficult.
This class was very difficult...maybe if there were some kind of handouts or powerpoint notes..I understand we are in college and we should be able to pick out keep points in the lecture to write...but its kind of impossible when the teacher says like 500 words in 1 min.!!if you want to fail or barely pass TAKE HER!!but u will regret it in the end!
AWFUL. if you have the choice, choose another prof. she can't remember what she said, she gets information wrong, she is cocky, and her test are terribly hard. be prepared to study every day, read the book, and take lots of notes. i dreaded her class everyday. bad prof.
worst teacher i have ever had in my life. the class was completly useless
Hands down one of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of knowing. I actually ended up dropping her Bio105 class halfway through the semester because it was SO unecessarily difficult & she is such a rude person. Doesn't hesitate to make you feel stupid when you ask a question. Stay away from her if possible!
Overall, if you do your reading and take good notes along with her lecture notes that are on BB, you'll do fine. I studied the day before a test and still get a B. The only bad thing is if you have a question in class, she will make you feel dumb. But don't let that worry you, because big lecture classes like bio 105 will have an SIP to help you.
I did not enjoy this class. Although, she is very energetic and keeps you focused, but what good is that if you cant pass the tests. She is very confusing! Lastly the testing material is not fair. The terminology she uses in lecture is different on her exams. I had a hard time taking the material learned in class and applying it on exams.
Professor Loerth is the worst professor I have every had in my entire collegiate career. She does not know what she is talking about or teaching since all she cares about are primates, she is rude, unwilling to admit mistakes and try's to trick students on exams. If you want to learn Bio avoid this teacher because you will only leave irritated.
I think Julia looked good all the time and regret not spitting some game.
I disagree with most comments. She is extraordinarily knowledgeable about the topics and provides excellent examples. Not an easy class and requires time but shes always willing to help and responds promptly to email. She doesnt try to trick but instead wants an application of material on exams. Also offers extra credit so you cant say shes not fair!
If you have to take this class do not take this teacher. I tried hard and gave it my all and still didn't get a good grade. She uses 2 text books which is useless. Her class averages for test would be failing and she would be happy with that. She does not care about your GPA or your scholarships. She likes what she does but does not do it well.
I'm sitting in this class right now and it's ridiculous. Enzymes blah blah, bacteria blah blah. No clue WTF she is saying. She is one of the worst Biology teachers ever. She does not care about your grade and her quizes are stupid. She argues with you that she is always right and makes you look stupid.
"Does that make sense" - She says that way too much.
Professor Loreth was a great professor. She is strict, but she is passionate about what she teaches you and will help you at all cost. I usually don't understand Biology and I got an A- in her class. If taking BIO 105, I strongly suggest her.
Once I tallied the amt of times she said does that make sense? 21. in an hour. and if its not that, its so far so good? She has no soul and does not care about your grade. There are so exceptions to any of her rules, literally if someone dies her response would be, not my problem, sorry.
I had Loreth as a Freshman. Her class killed my GPA. Her notes were unorganized and good luck trying to copy down all the notes before she takes them off and puts up a useless diagram. I can't count the number of times she compared Campbell to Sadauva. NO ONE CARES! She is an awful teacher and should not be teaching...period.
this teacher cannot teach very well at all, even though she knows the material well. I would suggest taking this class with almost anybody else because it is a waste of time and a serious morale killer!
You think she is doing a good job teaching until you get the test and nothing that you learned is on it. I will NEVER take a class of hers again. I e-mailed her a question regarding a article we had to read and her response to my question was that the answers could be found in the reading. NOT helpful. Thanks a lot.
She was very efficient in covering material and the tests weren't too bad. By far the quickest ever at grading and returning emails and everything is very organized. She is a real scientist, not someone that worships the gospel of textbooks as college campuses tend to do these days, progress/new ideas are made thru people like her, highly reccomend
She is a difficult professor, although she know the material very well. She is very fast passed and couldn't keep up with her. Notes were very difficult to understand, and did not help for the test really. She will be very tricky on test. Her labs were fair, not the best. I really studied for this class not kidding I am a serious student. difficul
Unless you are apathetic and/or lazy, choose her. She is enthusiastic about teaching. IF you don't want to learn and want to whine/complain, expecting to be handed a grade to suit your ego because that's what you've been taught that you're entitled to receive, you should avoid her. She suffers no fool. She has much to offer if you want to learn.
My methods were useless in this class. Loreth requires application (ie. memorization ain't gonna cut it). I find this annoying because not all of us NEED the application portion. Her tests are hastily written and often have mistakes and her lectures are speedy and inaccurate. She knows the material, but she /cannot/ teach. Do. Not. Recommend.
Julia Loreth does not model professionalism in her classroom. She does not teach the course in a manner that increases curiousity or creativity. She is not the quality of an instructor that meets the needs of her students. Each credit hour is expensive and not a good investment for a poor quality teacher.
This is not an easy class, I got an A, but I worked very hard for it. With that said, this woman knows her stuff. I like that she's not super "textbook dependent." I got sick of hearing people complain about her. Yes, her tests are difficult, but as long as you're willing to put forth actual effort, you'll do fine. She grades tests very quickly.
We had nine or ten exams in this class... maybe more. You're allowed to drop one. There were approx. twenty questions on each exam. I think two or three questions for each exam came straight from the course study guide and/or website. Other questions came from the readings, chapters, and lecture/notes. Overall, expect to work.
Awful. Plain and simple.
She moves through the material very quickly, she likes the book in some aspects... but she hates it in other aspects. I left almost every class confused and her tests are very hard. Just make sure you study the notes and do the extra credit for every test and you'll pass.
she moves WAY to quickly through the lesson. She used a projector with our class and just papers that she had written her notes on, which she switched too quickly for us to copy notes. she messed up reguraly on certain facts and that messed with my learning. I did terrible on all of her tests. She offers extra credit but its harder than the tests
I felt she was a great teacher! I had her for the lab as a teacher, but she guest lectured in my lecture class one day. That day was the only day I was awake and taking notes. But, she thoroughly went through the material that the lab dealt with each time. Sometimes it got annoying because we knew the material already. I enjoyed her lab.
Biology is honestly one of my best subjects and I left that class confused. I eventually just stopped going to class and reading straight from the text book. I ended up doing much better the second half of the course without her confusion and just help from the text book. She is text book dependent. My recommendation: DO NOT TAKE HER.
Took this class during the summer. Moved very fast, however she is a no nonsense teacher. She does what makes sense and doesn't do what doesn't, unlike some profs. She is extremely happy to clarify if you're confused and repeat things if you do not hear them. Her tests were on the harder side and could be cryptic, but I still came out with an A.
Bring a tape recorder to class so that you can review the things she says in lecture. Its a lot of information to cover in a short period of time. Dr. Loreth knows the concepts but she is not the best at going in depth into them for clarity. Your effort determines the grade you make in the class.
I love her!
I would advise strongly against taking this class. She is type of professor who will post grades of the entire class failing nearly every quiz without any extra effort on her end. She is completely dependent on the book, often times she doesn't know material, and her test questions come from who the heck knows where. Not a good professor.
This professor is an embarrassment to UNCG. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. CLASS. seriously. I have never been this frustrated with a professor in my life. She may be 'qualified' to teach but she should NOT be a COLLEGE professor. Can't believe my money is going to instructors like this. Absolutely the worst professor i've ever had.
EXCELLENT teacher. Cannot convey how helpful she is; her lectures are very clear. She does diagrams and pictures of almost everything. She tells you in great detail what will be on the tests. She is very fair. I took the summer class and it went very fast, but I still learned a LOT, and my interest level in the subject is much greater now.
Class is long and boring. She constantly talks and lectures assuming everyone has an understanding. She teaches from an outline and talks extremely fast. Worst teacher I ever had. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
She knows the material but is terrible are delivering it to us. She teaches off an outline which makes it difficult to learn if you're a visual learner. You will be better off reading the book, though her test are hard. I would not recommend her class at all. Almost everyone in the course is failing.
Had to drop her class because I was failing the quizzes from the first week after studying for days! I actually studied and wasn't able to pass maybe it was just me... but i would not recommend her class!
Pre-lecture quizzes suck and she won't post the answers because she knows hers are debatable. Lectures make sense, and they will stick if you read the textbook too. I would recommend her as long as you are ready to work. Pro tip, work on the quizzes as a group. Use your attempts to try questions singularly and fill in final answers with last try
I had her for lab and she is very helpful at giving a clear understanding of the material, but she is a bit quick paced. I did pretty well in the class, but she was a bit of a tough grader. Don't miss any days for labs; you can lose lots of points for missing one day. She is very knowledge in biology and can help you if you ask for help.
She presents the classes with an outline and she fills in information as she lectures. I have never had a teacher more clear and concise. She also repeats important concepts over and over again. Pre-lecture quizzes can be a little annoying because she makes spelling mistakes sometimes. But overall this class is really easy if you put in the effort.
Worst teacher, I had to drop her class and my 2 friends that stayed received a "F" in her course. Her teaching her horrible, it made me want to skip the class but she did iclicker questions every day. Her online quizzes were impossible to pass, and her exams were no easier. I tried my hardest&couldnt bring my "D" up before i dropped her class.
This class was hard! Her exams are fill in the blank!! Don't get me wrong she knows her stuff, but is very rude & goes way to fast, but managed to pull that class with a C
DO NOT EVER take this professor. Pop quizzes that are majority of your final grade. No powerpoint, just picture-less black and white outline. Tests are 70 questions and will include things you never talked about. Save yourself a headache and take someone else.
Don't take this professor if you are not prepared to put work into this class. For online quizzes, form study groups and use all attempts to get all points. Her exams are confusing and difficult; go to her office and ask for examples and how to apply concepts. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. It doable but more hard than necessary. I worked for my grade...
Mrs. Loreth is tough. I won't deny it but she is a fair grader. She has a dry sense of humor and can get a little weird at times. If you aren't willing to put in the effort, don't take the class because there is a lot of memorization, especially in bio 111.
This professor is absolutely awful! Would not recommend! Do NOT take her!!!!!!!
She always reviewed as soon as lab started! She was awesome!
Just please do yourself a favor and avoid this teacher at all cost.
I don't understand why so many people give her a hard time! You can take the quizzes several times, she gives SO MUCH extra credit at the end of the semester, and the tests are a good representation of what she goes over in class. She makes it very clear what you will be tested on.
Her class Isn't as hard as people make it seem, however it is not easy. If you take good notes there is no reason you shouldn't make atleast a C. Work together with your classmates to do canvas quizzes and assignments. Her tests contains lots of diagrams but everything she tests on is either in the book or lecture.
Make sure you're interested in biology before taking her class. Her class isn't for those who aren't committed to knowing the material.
Long lectures and hard tests BUT if you do the readings and study hard enough it shouldn't be too hard. You have to put in work for the class.
Very good way of explaining the material and brings excitement to the topics.
Personally she my favorite professor, if you attend class and actively listen you'll be fine. She does a great job of explaining things and gives a lot of real world examples to help your understanding. If she moves to fast or you don't understand all you have to do is ask her for extra help. The class is what you make of it.
she explains well.
she is not clear at all and she doesn't post powerpoints
If you really want to learn about Biology take her if you don't find someone else. I had for Bio111 lecture and lab and for Bio112. She has quizzes that's online open book and open source she will mention it to you in class and will say it so many times that you get the message. She will help you during her office hours and after class. I love her.
Good professor but grades heavy. I took her for bio lab and it was ok. Average class just grades on the most minute things which can get kind of annoying but overall is okay. Nothing too major. She cares about her class and is a very sweet lady!
I try not to be too harsh and this is the first professor of the 4 I have rated that I gave a score of less than 4. Lecture heavy, returns paper by plopping them down on the floor in a lecture hall with almost 200 students. Won't put any notes/documents online but gives about 10 copies to the entire class by, again, plopping on the floor.
Extremely energetic and great at connecting to everyday life
I enjoyed this professor. I know a lot of people did not like her. She explains very well and will do what ever she needs to do for you to do well in her class and other classes. Go to her office hours she is very helpful there and explain things in greater detail. Her class is hard, I will not lie but if you pay attention youll learn a lot.
If there is anyway you can get another professor this is your warning. She is an awful teacher.
By far the worst professor I've had. No powerpoint to follow along with, just a black and white outline that has no actual information on it. Be ready to teach yourself. "Extra credit" was given but made no difference in your actual grade. Online quizzes are impossible unless there is a group. Take any other professor because she is a nightmare.
This was the worst/most stressful class I have taken at UNCG and it was mostly because of the teacher. She is unrealistic in this 100 level course and gives you the most confusing material on the test and quizes. I had to dedicate my whole semester to this class and still did poorly. Avoid her lecuture and lab at all costs!!
Her method of teaching lectures suck. She puts too much effort on homework and grades very heavy. Apparently she curves tests but by one point. Going to her for help is useless because she is helpless.
Extremely hard professor and tests. Make sure you go to class and pick up your papers! She literally just throws stacks of papers on the ground. very unclear as to what she wants. Make sure you go to office hours for quizzes and homework! Find a solid group of people and work together on quizzes. Don't fall asleep in class. Avoid this class.
She is very unorganized, throws papers on the ground for you to pick up. Won't post any notes online.
This professor was great. She connected the materials well to every day life and was very caring and helpful in office hours. You have to put in effort though, and if you put in the effort she will put in effort. She helped me in office hours a lot and is very knowledgeable about Biology. Put in the work and you will be fine.
She did a really good job at engaging the class during lecture, but there were quizzes for every chapter before she lectured on it. I passed the class fine, but it definitely was not an easy task. GO TO LECTURE!!!!!
I freaking love Julia, I don't know what everyone is talking about, she is really straight forward with her lecture, she makes biology simple and she repeats herself over and over again so you can take down notes, if you put in the effort and go to class, you'll get a good grade. She is way better than a lot of the professors that teach bio 111.
I had Professor Loreth for BIO 111 my freshman year, and I didn't do so well in the class. Not that she's a bad professor, but because her teaching style was too fast-paced for me. She's cool and funny but she moved along real quick with the material. Her tests are also difficult so I highly recommend attending SIP as often as possible. SIP HELPS.
She's smart but goes too fast.
I would not recommend this lady to anybody. Her teaching will have you wondering why am I even in college. Don't take her
Professor Loreth great professor. She does go very quickly during lecture but she repeats everything about 10 times so if you don't get it by then you're just dumb. She is a very kind and caring lady so if you have a question so don't be afraid to talk to her after class. 10/10 would recommend.
Bio 111L is just an easy lab, but having Loreth makes it easier because she'll start lab with about a 30 minute explanation of the lab and where she basically gives you all the answers to the lab. Feel free to ask questions because she'll always have an answer.
I had Loreth for Bio 111 and I can honestly say that while I did have to work hard for my grade it was a really worthwhile class. She gives a lot of homework and online quizzes but if you do well you can use these to your advantage and boost your grade. Attendance is definitely mandatory but there's no Pearson lab and mastering which means no book.
Professor Loreth was a great professor for me, the class was a little challenging but she gave out many assignments and man extra credit to boost up your gpa. I went into the class was a low c and a 69 on my first exam and ended the class with a A-
I had her in the spring for Bio 111. She gives a lot of homework and online quizzes. She also gives out extra credit in class.
I loved professor Loreth! One of the best biology professors. She is very engaging and interesting to listen to if you ask me. Attendant is very important. I'd take her class again any day!
She looks for specific points on homework. Doesn't grade for completion but for specific info. You wouldn't know exactly what she's looking for. Chapter quizzes before the start of the chapter so you have to read. Always go to class but if you don't, get someone you know in that class to record the lecture for you or go to her office hours.
She is the worst professor I've ever had. I do not recommend her at all. I am an A+ student, however I could not satisfy her. She grades EXTREMELY harshly, graded my work wrong multiple times, and her tests aren't straight forward at all. She is also very very defensive.
She made biology harder than what it really is. Attendance isn't recommended, but if you miss class you'll be confused.
I do not recommend her at all. I would not recommend her to my worst enemy. She made the material way harder than it needed to be. You basically have to teach yourself in this class.
Tough!
Take her! while it may take hard work I went up 10 points on my average. Tons of assignments to help your grade!
She is a very hard professor but knows her stuff. She goes super fast but the tests and quizzes aren't straight forward. I went to SIP, office hours, and tutoring regularly and still failed all but one test. Be prepared to make this class your life because there is a ton of homework. I recommend taking this class with someone else.
Not horrible, but definitely makes you work for your grade. She's passionate and uses lots of visual aids in lecture. Online quizzes are quite difficult, and they are timed - usually one minute to answer each question. Often she will test on things that are not in her outline, but things she has said in lecture, so I recommend not skipping class.
Please don't take her, even for lab. Her online quizzes are timed, and it's very difficult to answer the questions in the timeframe, because they are almost like something that should be on the MCAT. Tests are equally as hard. She gets upset when people don't participate in class, but when asked a question replies very condescendingly.
Professor Loreth is a great teacher. She explains the material very well. Her expectations for a 111 class, though, are high. The online quizzes are timed and not too easy, and cover chapters not taught yet. But, she is extremely fair on testing what was covered in class. If you go to class, pay attention, and take good notes, you will be fine.
Dr. Loreth is a very passionate teacher who teaches and speaks passionately about the topics she covers in her classes. She is readily-available if you need help on homework, or on topics you don't understand, as well as she gives lots of opportunities to raise raise your grades. Make sure to STUDY THOSE TOPICS she covers IN HER LECTURES.
Loreth is a great professor. She is very interested in her field of study and it shows through her teaching. She is very straight forward and uses tons of questions & examples to help you understand. Make sure you go to class, pay attention to what she says and take notes, and do all assignments to the best of your ability, That is the way to pass.
She does her lectures only by outlines and diagrams and nothing else. Her quizzes and homework are so specific and you have to be clearly correct to get credit. On her homework assignments she only checks specific questions instead of them all and grades from that. I dont suggest you take her class if you arent a BIOhead or don't like studying alot
When it comes to quizzes and homework they do have to have specific answers but shes totally fine with you working together to get the right answer. You do have to study a lot but she does her best to give you resources to help out. She does move around a lot and uses diagrams to help make sure you're understanding the material.
Professor looks for specific key words when grading written assignments but does not tell you what those key words are. Without the key words present, you will fail the assignment easily.
Avoid her like the plague; shell make you hate biology. She doesnt care about students so dont expect anything good. Doesnt matter how well you know the material if answers arent worded exactly as shed like on the written assignments.
On top of being a tough grader and giving a lot of readings, she also has surprise in class assignments. Also there are no study guides for the tests and she doesn't grade the whole assignment but only a few questions on the homework. The homeworks don't help much and are very difficult to do. She gives extra credit but you have to print a lot
Loreth's a passionate professor and she knows what she's talking about when it comes to Bio, but she can be condescending which makes her have little sympathy for her students. She is an extremely tough grader. Her assignments are challenging and she only grades parts of it. Her exams are not straight forward. If you're gonna take her, use SIP.
Loreth is a good professor who knows her stuff. She doesnt take excuses and has high expectations. She is always willing to help, and SIP is great. If you take this class make sure you go to SIP!!
I have no doubt that she is an intelligent woman. HOWEVER.. lecture is pretty much useless for her exams. Nothing said in lecture will be on the exam. Good luck.
Really bad at emails and meetings.
Strict
Ya'll she is not that bad!! She gives extra credit if you show up for lecture. Her lectures are fine, she will try to help you understand the material by using diagrams and materials in class. Her tests are okay, I was able to pass her class with an A. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO SIP, old tests of hers are shown! As long as you study, you'll be fine.
Julia Loreth is an amazing professor and you can tell she is passionate about what she teaches. Most of her assignments come straight from the textbook or from lecture, so come to class and pay attention. You can work with people on all assignments and the quizzes. The quizzes are online and timed, but easy if you work with someone.
This class is very disorganized and difficult. If you dont attend every single class you will probably miss a pop quiz that will completely tank your grade. The quizzes are super easy but the test are beyond hard. I dont reccomend taking this particular class.
Julia Loreth is a horrible professor. Her test are beyond difficult. I would not reccomend taking this professor since BIology is already a difficult course in itself.
I saw her reviews on this app before I started her class, so I became nervous. Honestly she is an amazing professor. Shes knows what shes taking about. Give her respect, she will do the same. Id say go ahead and find a big group to work with so you can all help each other out on the quizzes. Julia doesnt mind if you help each other on quizzes.
Professor Loreth is tough and she will definitely make you work to do well. Her exams are challenging but by studying your assignments, notes, and quizzes, being successful is possible. She is lecture heavy, but is available during office hours and she will help you understand concepts and assignments.
Professor Loreth is not a bad person, she is just kind of a robot and she doesn't know how human beings learn. I took her for lab only so i don't have experience with her in a lecture room but unfortunately my strongest memory with her was being talked down to and insulted when asking a question about one of the lab book questions. Caution.
Professor Loreth makes it difficult to succeed in her course with unclear grading criteria and contradicting expectations. Don't take if there are other options available
Her test questions are confusing and indirect. You could be the most studious student ever and still make at most an 80 on a test. I've made better grades in more advanced biology courses and it doesn't seem like she wants her students to succeed. Also, her grading makes no sense and the quizzes are ridiculously hard.
This is one of the toughest courses I've ever taken, it did not seem like she wanted any of her students to pass based on her test averages, if you're signed up for her 111 class, try to get into Dr. Hens' course instead
Class is tough because nearly everything is group work, so you really want to have a good group. professor Loreth is the toughest grader I have ever had. Didn't tell us what things we needed to bring to class and then get points deducted for not printing things out. Very rude and very energetic. The first B I ever got.
If you need a lab for a Gen Ed I suggest finding a different teacher. Shes nice enough and willing to answer your questions but she comes off as a little rude and grades very harshly. I think the highest grade in the class was an 82 everyone else had Cs or Ds. I was stuck at a 75 for weeks and lucky ended with an 80.
Loreth has high expectations, for her online bio lab. She wants work to be done very thoroughly and she grades very toughly. She is not helpful in her emails and should answer emails much more frequently, especially considering the class is online. Her feedback usually does not help and her canvas page is very poorly laid out.
I had Julia for my online bio lab. It was probably my worst experience in an online college class so far. She doesnt give you much information to work with and then picks apart your labs reports. Her comments and feedback were usually rude and condescending rather than helpful or constructive. She was nice in the video calls but rude through email
Julia is a very intelligent professor at UNCG. But, she does make you work for a good grade in her class. The material she teaches, she expects you to know come test day. She is famous for her pop quizzes during class in an attempt to help you receive a few extra points to improve your grade, which is why attendance is important! She is also funny!
I loved her teaching style and she really pushes you to work and understand the material. This isn't an easy A course, but I left feeling as if I knew the material better than I would have with other professors.
She's a good professor and tries to explain everything during the lecture, she also gives many examples to help us understand the material. The exams are really hard and there is a lot of homework. The class is really hard but if you study and do everything on time you will pass.
If you dont have friends or dont make friends in this class, youll fail.
Her teaching ethic is horrendous and she acts like a child. Unless you copy off other classmates the class will be very hard since all her tests and quizzes have absolutely nothing to do with her long and boring lectures. Always gives students of color a hard time and is very disrespectful to all her students. Why would she choose to be a teacher?
She overly criticizes her students. When I was struggling and trying to reach out she simply told me if I couldn't handle the class to just drop it. If you don't automatically know everything she makes you feel like a idiot. Do not take her!
The most challenging course I've taken at UNCG. She makes biology a million times harder than it needs to be. Nit-picks with homework, tests are extremely difficult (she does use some questions from the back of the book though). Gives ten question quizzes and only 7 minutes to complete.
If you're about taking this class just know that i dropped out after doing to syllabus quiz. No reason a syllabus quiz should be that hard.
Gives the occasional in class assignments and extra credit (doesn't warn you) Great Lecturer Ask questions if you need it and GO TO OFFICE HOURS Taken BIO 111 and BIO 112 and I loved taking it with her
There is absolutely no reason this class should be so hard. there is no reason that it is impossible to get a good grade on HOMEWORK. her lectures are messy and difficult to keep up with no power points. so much homework and hard tests. she is also no help to students who want to learn and pass and rude with responses and expectations.
Great Professor. She kind, understanding, and the people who complain are the people who sit in the back and stay on their phones. She actually cares for your education and wont give you questions that are straight of the internet so you have to think for yourself. Awesome first semester and signed up for next semester too.
Awesome Professor. Had her my first semester for 111 and now 112. Homeworks got a little harder in this class but I also stopped reading the textbook in this class. Awesome lectures just pay attention and youll get at least a low B.
Still a great professor when moved online because of COVID-19. Always loves when you talk back and understanding about situations.
Do not recommend. I had her for bio lab, she was like a squirrel. I never fully understood anything she said and she took points off on quizzes for the stupidest stuff.
JULIA IS AMAZING. I took her 2019-2020 with BIO 112 and 111. All the people who complain about her honestly don't need to be Bio majors. Yes, she makes you work for it but so you actually keep what you learn in the class and not learning for memorization. I've come to know Julia as a professor and trusted professional. Talk to her she isn't scary.
don't. just SAVE YOURSELF AND LEAVE. She doesn't know how to explain anything she's doing (especially when it comes to excel). I leave with a headache and don't even get me started on lab reports her highest lab grades are no more than a 70. I asked her how to write a certain sentence in a section & wrote down word for word and she said I was wrong
I have never commented on a lecturer using RMP, but I wanted to warn all students to NOT TAKE HER lab/lecture course. I swear to God, you will fail! She grades as if we didn't turn anything in. She doesn't teach anything and fails everyone. She ruins the essence of education. I'm definitely reporting her to the head of the department of biology.
Have you ever heard the tragedy of the Biology student? I thought not. Its not a story Julia Loreth would tell you its a UNCG legend. The biology student was a straight A student so intelligent and so wise he could pass any class he wanted to.... the teachings of Julia Loreth is a pathway to many failures some consider to be unnatural.
DO NOT TAKE A LAB WITH THIS WOMAN. She is beyond awful. She is all over the place and never knows whats going on. She is nice but STUPID HARD when it comes to grading lab reports. Everything has to be perfect. I only had her for lab so no idea what shes like in the class room. But I would be warned.
Rough class if you dont pay attention. Pacing is very fast.
Wayyyy too hard for an introductory gen-ed class. Nothing but advanced chemistry reactions they expect you to already know . Lectures are all over the place. In class assignments are graded harshly, and thought up on the fly, questions are often not given until the last couple minutes, or even after class has ended.
This is supposed to be an introductory course but it doesn't feel like it. The pacing is way too fast, she stops for questions at the end and several times her answers have been short & unhelpful. Grades harshly. Moves on before you're ready. Good luck. I'm usually a straight A student, but I'm at a D right nowShe's got energy, I'll give her that.
RUN, I repeat RUN. For an introductory class she is taking it too seriously. We have one exam with 60questions, and another with 50 questions the same day back to back and both only for 2hrs. You don't have time to think. RUN
When I first started her class and after seeing other reviews I was terrified. I too am a typical straight A student who suddenly felt at risk of failing simply because of the way she teaches. You're gonna need to be adaptable and willing to study if you want to pass; it's not impossible, but you're going to have to actually take care in your work.
Julia is great at explaining things and is very open to questions and further explanation. She explains the material before the lab, helps when there is confusion, and is kind. While she is a little odd, I find that to be a good thing. She goes above and beyond by making sure that we understand the material we are covering in bio lecture.
She moves very fast, I wouldnt necessarily say that it is a bad thing, but sometimes you might get lost. Not sure how she is lecture wise, but she is okay as a lab instructor. She is a very harsh grader though, hense my low grade.
Julia was a cheerful instructor and always answered questions. But, she's a really tough grader and wants things perfect (understandable, but difficult to keep up to as a freshman). You need to really good with your words for your lab report. Make sure you find good lab partners on the first day, because you're stuck with them throughout!
I had Professor Loreth for lab, not as bad as she was made to be. She does talk quietly which comes off as her moving at a hasty pace. She weighs her points mostly on file uploads, and not a lot on analysis pieces, which was a plus for me and easy points for me. She may have been blunt at times but she was very straightforward and amazing!!
