She's excentric, but a sweet person. It's a great class.
She is really nice, and the class is really interesting. There isn't much room for an opposing point of view though.
She's really helpful if you have special needs. If you don't agree with the informaion presented she makes it really tough to voice oposing opinions. The class makes white, middle class males out to be the devil.
if she says umm one more time i might just snap. class can be very boring at times, but some of the readings are interesting.
Intelligent, respectful and sweet. She does not make white males out to be the devil, which is obvious if you listen and understand what is being said. Voice whatever disagreements you have-if you're too self-conscious that's your problem.
I hated this class. Most of the reading you do is common sense about genders. LOTS OF READING. You are always supposed to be able to site them. She was not clear on what she wanted for assignments and projects. Never learned most people's names in class.
Nice teacher, but very hard class to take if you have opposing opinions. Dont take if you are a guy.

you'll learn a lot, very interesting and she is nice so thats a plus.
Class has no point to it. We seldom discuss text and spend most of the time watching films. Easy class but pointless.
You will not learn anything from this prof! All you do is show up and listen to everyone in the class say the same comment over and over again in the quest for participation slips (are we in third grade?). Should you NOT take the class? Answer is
Crazy Rules! Cell phone rings - your absent! Participation is done by slips, if you dont actively participate you get D in participation. Noone reads, quizes retarded, but only worth 6 points. gives mad extra credit opportunities, final is project (easy)
She's evil. No matter how good your work is, you will not recieve full credit. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Even if you're interested in the subject and want to learn more about it. The material can be interesting, but she makes it SO uninteresting! All she does is talk in class for the full 3 hours!!!!! Did not like her one bit!
READ.READ.READ.QUIZ.READ.READ.READ.QUIZ.Do not take this class. can never please her with work, always something wrong, shes not very clear on project instructions. Everyone in class is confused half the time. She needs to learn how to teach. until then&
Not a bad professor, grades easily, participation is very influential.
The class can be very interesting. I just suggest a different professor. She isn't that bad but if you want to enjoy the class than don't take her. If you just do the work and attend class you'll do fine. Oh and don't forget to participate!
Very Very boring class. She's a big feminist. This class was the biggest waste of time and money, I would never reccomend anyone take it.
I loved this class! It is very helpful to learn about other life styles. I had two guy friends in the class and they loved it. Class was easy, but do the reading and participate it is an easy 20% the easiest you will ever get in college.
If you don't want to deal with irrational feminists that don't listen to anyone else's opinions and freshman girls that think they're liberated because they're taking this class, don't register for it. Subject matter usually interesting, made frustrating.
Weird sense of humor; very strict rules; not helpful outside of class. The course consists of readings, redundant discussion, and pop quizzes. She gives random grades, and will not make an effort to learn your name past the first week.
The professor emphasizes the fact that she wants you to share your opinions and views, but after you then share them, she makes them seem less significant and almost wrong compared to her opinions.
If you like having liberal feminist ideals shoved down your throat, this is the class for you. Otherwise, DO NOT take it. This woman is as bad as they come. She makes information that COULD be interesting terribly boring. She is definitely NOT friendly.
This teacher loves to make you feel stupid. Whenever you make a comment she has some kind of rude comeback that makes you never want to speak again. DO NOT TAKE HER! It's a good class, terrible professor!!!!
Mason was a complete jerk. No help ever offered and if you were to ask all you got was read the syllabus! Thinks people don't have lives outside of class and makes up the most boring projects ever! Same stuff is taught over and over! Don't take this class with this professor EVER!
Kinda goofy but nice. Easy grader. I loved this class, it really opened my eyes and i reccomend everyone take it. She uses a lot of real life examples(tv and movies) to make it interesting.
I WAS excited to take this class, until I realized what blatant feministic and prejudicial person she is. GUYS-DO NOT TAKE HER-she'll make you feel like a real jerk for being born a male. GIRLS-don't let yourself be sucked into all of her bs ideas, learn for yourself
Fair grader, understanding prof. Lots of reading and pop quizzes. group work is done quite a bit, so if you don't like groups, don't take. She's a little nervous, but nice. Go to class everyday for participation points and pop quizzes.
Funny, the only people that don't like her are guy... I'm a guy , and the only thing she tried to teach was equality, To me that's not a very radical idea. The class was really informative, and yes it will amke you uncomfortable but its a good thing and you will learn alot if you're not cloesminded
Fairly easy. Requires A LOT of reading, and she'll most likely quiz you every day over the reading. Mrs. Mason's a nice lady, although she has a crazy laugh. Class was interesting, and I honestly learned a lot. You have to make presentations in front of class - so be prepared for that.
I thought Dr. Mason was very helpful outside of class, always willing to discuss project ideas. She tries to incorporate everyone in her class discussions. She does not hate men, but she is a feminist (and there is nothing wrong with that!)
I like the course and the professor. A lot of reading and writing. She is willing to help in any way she can. I would take this prof. again.
She is a terrible teacher and the class is extremely boring. She doesnt really teach, but instead voices her own opionion on everything. Dont have this teacher when you take this class!
I learned a lot and I absolutely loved her and the class. If you are close-minded or macho, this is probably not the class for you. Lots of quizzes, but if you do the reading, you'll be fine. Some people think she is rude, but it is all just perception because I think she is very nice and helpful.
This class isnt difficult. As long as you participate you'll do fine. Express your ideas and opinions but expect Prof Mason to play devils advocate because thats what she does. She comes off as rude somtimes but thats just to get a rise out of people. I like her and hopefully will have her again.
expects way too much for a 200 level class. Quiz every week, 2 large projects, 2 in class presentations. she's really annoying and the class is boring. Get Prof Underwood, she is way better.
Dr. Mason requires a lot of work for the class, but in the end, was a great professor. I learned sooo much about Women's issues. Just attend class, pay attention and participate. You'll do fine! I got an A-.
The class is interesting, you will find that she uses a lot of media examples. There is a lot of reading to be done. She can seem a bit standoffish at first but if you have any problems or questions she is always willing to help. HAVE FUN!

Awesome. The class was very interesting, there were a lot of media examples and the class discussions were very informative. I wasn't interested in gender studies at all but it ended up one of my favorite classes. It was a lot of work, reading and a big project but it's definitely doable. She khows her stuff.
She's kind of mean, and expects a lot.

"she assigns WAY too much reading..2 to 3 essays every night each about 20 pages long. the class was alright...but she isn't that great at all." 3 20 page essays a night? are you on crack? I took her and no such thing ever happend
I am an A student, but this teacher does not teach. Basically you sit in class and talk about the readings. Then on test You get the questions on the test ahead of time Bad Thing: whats the point if the teacher does not claify the answers during the class. I did a A paper where i had 3 grammer errors but dead on content but got a B. Avoid Her!!
Pretty good. Nice enough lady but kinda thinks because she knows more on topic that anything the students say is ridiculous. Not always clear on assignments and sometimes grades slightly unfairly but I don't know anyone who didn't do well in her class.
Amazing, intelligent professor. Take her class only if you're willing to open up your mind and learn.
I literally thought I was going to get my *** kicked by her, or the class, on more than 1 occassion for stating my views. Im not a feminist, I'm a realist, and apparently that isn't allowed in wgs. The class was a joke, I learned nothing and completely dreaded every second of it. She scares you into reading the boring texts.. skim & you'll be fine.
She's aweful and doesn't know how to grade. I once forgot a whole conclusion paragraph and she gave me a 90, but then I wrote a 6 page paper front and back on got a 84. I swear she just likes to make you mad.
The class is ridiculous!!! The class consists you reading (a lot!) and then getting points for talking about it. She doesn't like a students oponion unless she agrees with the stance! I wrote a 12 pg. research paper and went to the writing center 5 times!!... she still gave me a 83%... and im an A student!! If you have her... get out NOW!
There was a lot of reading, but it was not hard to get a good participation grade for her class. Just talk at least once during every class. The service learning project seemed tough, but it was not a big deal. Preparing for exams takes time, but it isn't hard to get good grades.
Nice person, good professor. GREAT COURSE. Do the Learning Service Project if you can! Exams are medium difficulty, make sure you study and read all of the readings. Participate in class at least once a week. Prof Mason comes off as intimidating and strict but she cares about her students and is willing to help out. Use her office hours!
Mason is AMAZING-had four classes with her-intelligent, compassionate prof.Yes you will be responsible for a significant reading/thinking about topics you may be unfamiliar/uncomfortable with. But common, were in COLLEGE folks. Its good for you.And it is a WGS class, obviously going to be taught from feminist perspective.Open your mind-love her class!!
Class requires lots of reading but she goes over it so you just skim it. She grades fairly and tries to be helpful but leaves things very open-ended which can be frustrating. Class is somewhat repetitive/redundant. If you're going to oppose her views you better have an intelligent argument in order for her to respect it.
i really enjoyed the class, though it was a lot of reading and writing. very interesting course, and i would recommend her. shes always willing to help
She's very intelligent and kind. She is willing to help if you outside of class. VERY interesting. Sometimes it felt like the discussions did not follow the readings, and it was not extremely important that they were done. Tests are okay but more time is needed. She grades pretty fairly, but attendance is mandatory.
I liked her alot. She helped and really takes participation into account. She shows a lot of video clips. All-in-all you can't go wrong when you raise your hand and give your 2 cents about whatever they're talking about. However, there is a huge project that she grades pretty hard and only 2 exams!
The class material is interesting, but Prof. Mason is kind of boring. She's nice but not all that helpful. There's a lot of reading for homework.
Very interesting class. The only homework is reading's done for every class, a 6 hour experiential learning, and a paper about it. Tests focus on your ability to analyze women's issues. I recommend!
Boring. Doesn't seem to know her subject matter. Class is discussion based but she is very bad at leading discussion. Avoid. Almost dropped my major because of her.
What a waste of my time.
She was an English prof so grades hard on essays and gives almost no time to write essays on exams. Otherwise, decent prof. Interesting class though
This class is a waste of time and is very boring. She grades papers and essays really hard. avoid this class in general.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. I am telling you, GET OUT NOW. I worked SO, SO hard in this class and all she did was tear my work apart. Critical, and so mean. The worst. Hated her. She is very bias and grades unfairly. She picks favorites and sticks to them. Shouldn't be allowed to teach. AWFUL PROF.
I loved this class! The only negative is that she's very critical and picky in grading written assignments.
A lot of people expect this class to be a walk in the park, it is relatively easy, but there is also a alot of work to be put in outside of class. Prof Mason however is very helpful, and knows a lot about what she is teaching. I would take her again.
She's a really tough grader, and very rude to the students. Although she lead decisions well in class, she wasn't very willing to work with students
She was a good professor. We had only a few quizzes, but she had a tendency to talk down to the students during lectures. She seemed to get annoyed with us a lot. She was very helpful outside of class though. Exams are just terms and in-class essays.
Talks down to students. Not student friendly. Not helpful.
Not helpful. Not friendly. Talks you down.
While I'm exiting the course with an A, I would recommend you stay away! This Prof is condescending, rude, and extremely critical. You will be reading, reading, reading, but you won't talk about it so don't bother! She'll ask questions to start a "discussion"; however you can't follow what she's even asking. Nobody talks because their afraid...
I agree with they commenter below, but I'd spell "they're" correctly. Yes, this Prof is condescending, rude, and extremely critical! Stay away! It's like the movie "Bad Teacher" without the hotness. All you do is watch video clips (but don't be fooled)...you will be reading (and not discussing) over 50 pages a night.
Loved this teacher! She was always helpful and willing to meet outside of class. She does talk fast, but she has an awesome talent of bringing everything together. Even when a student said something not quite on topic, she had a way of bringing that comment into the situation. Would definitely take her again!
Be prepared for a LOT of reading in this course. Also Professor Mason is big on participation and tries to stimulate class discussion, which is a factor in your grade. Overall, good professor
Dr. Mason is a great professor!! A lot of people are hating on her here... but she is seriously really great. She is critical but teaches you to be critical as well which is important in academic studies and life! There is a lot of reading but it's always interesting and get's you thinking. Take Gender and Pop Culture!! Such a good class.
What is best about her is that you get the grade you deserve. If you are a good student you will get an A or a B. Really fun class. I looked forward to it everyday. DOES NOT use the book, save your money. The best teacher at FAU. Takes zero BS. She's really cool. I got an A- in the class. Move your whole schedule around to take her.
Class was the same every day, she's more than willing to help you out, however it was hard for me to figure out what exactly she wanted from her students though. Overall she was alright, but would prefer a different professor.
Assigns a lot of BS projects for WGS491. She's really willing to help and wants to see you succeed and is super nice, but sometimes it's a little tough to know exactly what she wants to see in a project or paper. Grades a lot less harshly in 255, but that's expected from a 200 level class. No tests in 491, but a huge semester long activist project
Professor Mason is a good prof. Not great but not terrible either. Course only requires 2 exams and a 3-5 page paper. She does assign a lot of reading but most of it is interesting. Also shows videos on a regular basis which is nice. Overall, it was a good class, just a little dry at times.
Cool class, easy grader, but very opinionated. If she doesn't agree with you, you will know it.
This class is extremely easy if you read and participate in class. The only problem is the fact that there are only two grades besides the final and midterm. She is way too picky about grading and marks you down 10-15 points for just one error. Her class should be an easy A but I am stuck at an 88 because whatever I do with my writing isn't enough
Very opinionated and difficult to do well in the class if you do not share her opinions. Overall and easy class but i left every day furious. Do not take if not interested in the subject. Reading assigned every day, but if you go to class and listen you can get by without it. 2 papers and 2 tests given. Lots of videos and activities in class.
Professor Mason is very smart & passionate about her work. I learned a lot. However, it seems that if you don't agree with what she is saying or her opinions you are wrong. There is SO much reading & she definitely expects you to speak up in class. She's a tough grader, & with few grades in the book, its hard to get an A if you mess up on 1 thing.
I had a difficult time in this class. Went in thinking it wouldn't be to difficult, and the material was not, but her grading was. She doesn't provide a lot of information on what she expects to see from the writing assignments and the essay's on the exams she grades particularly hard on. Make sure you use scholarly peer reviewed journal articles!
I am no means a women and gender studies minor, and I hated this class, took my disney childhood and turned it upside down. we were analyzing all the old disney movies and I hated it. don't suggest taking this class if you love disney movies as they are
Class is basically graded by a paper, midterm, and final. Very hard and near impossible to get an A unless you are a WGS major or minor because of how she grades. She expects you to know everything already without teaching much. Very opinionated. Class is interesting, but please by all means take someone else. I repeat don't take her.
Professor Mason teaches higher level classes as well as this intro class, which leads me to believe why she is such a hard grader. She grades like it is a 300 level class when all in all it is an intro class. If you are looking for an A or simply just taking it for a gen ed take someone else.
Do not, I repeat do not take this class with this professor, especially if you aren't a WGS major. I took this class because I thought it'd be interesting and it was. However, prof Mason is the worst. She is an extremely tough grader and talks down to her students even though she says to respect everyone's opinions. Very rude.
Was going to take a class with her, seen on a few boards how terrible of a professor she is, avoiding her like the plague.
I really liked Julia Mason. I took her gend and pop culture class as a freshman and I found her class so enjoyable & enlightening. If you aren't interested in gender this may not be the class for you, though. But you do not necessarily need to be a WGS major. She explains all the terms to you
One of the worst professors I have taken, and one of the worst graders. She grades extremely tough. Participation (talking in class) is apart of your grade and mandatory, so if you're not a fan then avoid. She is however extremely passionate about the topic, so I guess thats a plus.
I like Dr. Mason as a person, but I'm not too keen on her teaching style. She assigns a lot of very dense readings and plays a lot of videos in class. However, she's pretty accessible outside of class and is very clear with what she wants on assignments. I'd take a class with her again, but she's not my favorite.
Mason is an okay prof, but I would not have taken her if I knew it would have been the way it was. There are only 5 grades all together, and you do tons of class activities for nothing. You need to show up because she refers to stuff in class that you need to refer to on exam. Exam is essays, and like 5 matching. YOU NEED TO READ. LOTS OF IT.
Mason is definitely the worst professor that I have had yet at GVSU. She gave me the worst grades that I have ever received. She is a very tough grader and only grades based on if it meets her personal standards, not what her rubric says. She includes questions on exams that she never talked about. Try to find another professor if you can.
Professor Mason is very passionate, but very opinionated. This class was very one-sided and she asked questions to pry out answers she wanted to hear. There was never any constructive discussion because she encouraged students to view things her way. She was not awful, but by far not my favorite either. Few assignments, lots of reading, and 2 exams
She really loved what she taught and she really wanted her students to understand the content. The class itself was very interesting and I enjoyed it. Participation and showing up for class is mandatory. Her exams are basically essays. Think them through before you go in, have it thought out. SO much reading but it does help in the long run.
Mason is very knowledgable and I very much appreciated the information and the way that she presented it, but it was very different from other WGS classes that I have taken in the sense that there was no real room for discussion. Even though I agreed with nearly everything she presented, I felt as though only her opinion mattered.
First of all, the amount of homework she gives is crazy. She usually just gives points for completion but sometimes will collect it. She says that she's an easy grader but she's not. She marks you down on the littlest of things. Would not recommend.
This prof assigns a LOT of dense reading as well as the 3 novels required. You do application exercises with a group, which is the "easy" points, but they are graded like quizzes. Midterm, final, few extra exercises, and a huge project. You have to read at least some of the articles/novels to pass. Grades based on her opinion, not your argument.
Though Prof. Mason teaches courses that cover valuable and interesting material, I wouldn't take her again. Becoming offended and hostile when you ask her questions concerning assignments and material, she makes students very uncomfortable. Her grading is based on her personal preference of language not actual knowledge of material.
Class is mainly based on entire class discussions of readings and other artifacts. I found the class boring; the material was fairly interesting but the way the class was lead was not engaging and very repetitive.
I really loved Dr. Mason's class. It was super interesting and I loved all the content. Discussions were always super interesting and she seemed to love my participation. SUPER helpful when I consulted her for the final paper that I was confused about, ended up getting 100. I would recommend her!
She's awful. If you disagree with her, you're wrong. If you present a counterpoint, you're wrong. If you stumble over a word, get ready to be the subject of a rude joke or remark in front of the entire class. Yet in spite of this she expects you to talk a lot. Her content is one sided and she's unable to answer questions outside of her powerpoint.
If you show up and atleast pay attention you will be perfectly fine for her exam and assignments. Loved her class and it was less lectures and more in class assignments and group interactions. her Exams are pretty common sense and are more so written based so you can be able to pass her exams if you just pay attention.
Professor Mason isn't the most approachable professor, I asked her to answer one of my questions and she got extremely mad. She takes attendance during lecture, you have to go to pass. There are little assignments that she grades so be careful turning everything in.
Does not give great feedback on papers and is harsh on mechanical errors (ie. spelling, sentence strucutre, etc..)
Took this class fully online & asynchronous. Very easy to pass with a high grade, and a great class to use as a gen. ed. You could 100% go without buying the book, but it comes in handy sometimes.
Took this class asynchronous with covid. I did not have any interactions at all with the professor- she didnt reach out much. However, her grading was easy and understandable. We had interesting content each week, and the primary assignment was only a discussion per week. Typical few quizzes. Good class and cool info, super easy!
This might of been it was because it was an online course due to covid but I didnt really enjoy it. The professor is fine shes there if you need help and can give good advice at times but her attitude makes her seem non approachable
Dr. Mason is an amazing professor!! This class was a breeze but I have actually learned quite a bit. Midterms were an exam (easy as heck) and an essay. Im excited to finish off the semester with her. Also, she responds to emails in like 20 minuteseven on the weekends! Take hereasy A!
I had this class asynchronous, so I did not have much exposure to Dr. Mason herself. However, this class is a solid choice for WGS! Mason is very clear about what you are expected to do each week which I loved. You have a discussion post every week but she is an easy grader. Overall, I would definitely take this again!
Loved this class! Lectures are interesting. She is a "tough" grader on writing, but if you do the work and ask for help she'll give good feedback and you'll get an A. You will do fine as long as you show engagement with the material. Tests and quizzes are the easiest thing ever, just a couple of writing assignments and 1 group presentation.
SHe didn't care that much about her students. When I got covid and told her, she didn't give me any extensions. I don't recommend her as a professor.
I barely went to class and still passed with an A. There are a lot of projects and writing assignments. I felt that when I did go to class, I was just bored and felt like I had wasted my time and could learn this all on my own, which I did. Yes, the issues we learned are important, I just wish it were more fun and enjoyable.
