This was Professor Ortona's first time teaching solo and at UCSD. She made mistakes on lectures and exams that sometimes cost students worse scores on exams. She has messy handwriting and goes too fast during lecture, I always had to go back and watch the recording. She is nice and understanding though, and tried her best to make up for mistakes.
Professor Ortony is an amazing and one of my favorite professors by far. She is understanding in many ways and focuses on making sure everyone understands the topic. Go to her OH, she's very helpful. She has 2 midterms, no cheat sheets but gives a lot of free points her if needed. Homework (10% EC) optional. She tries her best since she is new.
This class challenging as is, this professor makes it 5x harder. She rushes through slides and has really messy hand writing. The tests are all multiple choice which I thought wasn't too bad at first but then I took them. Felt like the class was more about memorizing facts like IMF's or molecular structures. Formula sheets provided are not helpful.
Ortony genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed! Goes through problems in lectures and explains things in detail w/ examples. Sometimes went fast, but lectures were recorded so it's easy to refer back. MCQ Exams w/ equations sheets. Offers 10% Extra credit. Always accessible & open to questions after lecture & in Office hours!
Professor Ortony is a great professor who cares for her students. Believe organizational mistakes were only made because it was her first quarter teaching at UCSD. Exams are fair and familiar from the class coursework. You also get a 10% EXTRA CREDIT grade boost from weekly Macmillan HW. And you can replace both midterms with the final. I recommend
Professor Ortony is very caring and has a great personality. She welcomes all question. However sometimes there are confusions or mistakes during lectures. Test heavy and midterms are harder than homework&discussion worksheets. Lectures are a little confusing and rushed. Not very clear grading scale. But gives extra credit (homework) overall ok
Prof Ortony does care about students and office hours are helpful. The office hours are once a week so if the time doesn't work for you it sucks. Lectures feel scattered and fast-paced but don't cover material quickly. I didn't finish a single test in this class because they were so fast. The textbook saved me as I understood it more than lecture.
I highly recommend Professor Ortony for Chem 6B. Lectures are structured and taught well, I never felt like I was missing any concepts. In class problems are very important and are often very similar to test questions, so take good notes. You can tell Professor Ortony cares a lot about the success of her students.
Super caring and understanding professor, highly recommend. There were a few mistakes in the class but they were quickly resolved and exams were very fair. Although cheat sheets are not allowed she provides a thorough equation sheet that gives you everything you need for the exam. She gives lots of extra credit too!
Chem 6B is difficult material, this professor makes it very understandable! Your grade is 90% exams (2 midterms and a final) and 10% EXTRA CREDIT. Exams are all mcq, questions are EXACTLY like lecture/homework questions. She is so sweet and genuinely wants what's best for her students, highly recommend taking this professor if u want a good grade!
CHEM 6B is going to be tough... however, Dr. Ortony tries to make the material as understanding as possible. Midterms were semi-difficult, but she gave a formula sheet. No outside notes are allowed, including the final. Overall, she was great.
Awesome professor in the sense that she is all about improvement and giving her students second chances to improve their grades as well as the understanding of the content. 2 midterms and 1 final (portions of final can help change poor scores of midterms entirely). Also homework is extra credit. Great professor overall and pretty good lecturer too
True to her motto of making chemistry fun and not grade focused, HW was Extra Cred (total course score out of 110%). Allowed me to focus on learning instead of stressing about the difference between a 92 and a 93. Hope she keeps this! Please improve organization and proofread lectures to reduce mistakes while walking through problems in class.
I took chem6B with this prof. last quarter and it was a great experience and def one of my favorite profs at UCSD. It was clear that prof. Ortony cared about student as she was supper accommodating. Lectures can feel fast passed at times with some of her writing being hard to read but overall prof. Ortony is an amazing prof, highly recommend.
The perfect professor
she was amazing and made chem interesting! her blazers were so cute and def would take again!! u can tell shes passionate ab chem and wanted us to do well. also homework was 10% extra credit so grades are looking up rn!!!! but hw/textbook was $45 so... (but u get 10% ec so it was worth it). also grade replacement plan for midterms to final was nice
While I found the class really difficult, Ortony was very motivating and kind. She is very clearly passionate about chem and wants to help in any way she can. While attendance is optional, I went to almost every lecture because she was great. Get ready to spend a lot of time studying though.
just an amazing professor, she cares so much for her students
Favorite professor, amazing lecturer, really wants her students to succeed and makes all the homework extra credit.
She was super accommodating to her students (making midterm 2 optional) and she held lots of office hours, where she responded pretty well to our questions. She was also a very sweet professor. One complaint is that her lectures were fairly disorganized but she held herself accountable for that.
Ortony will let you have extra time on homework if you need it. Lectures were pretty good, and the tests were fair. I loved how she was passionate about chemistry and really wanted us to love it too. My 84% ended up being a B+ because of the curve at the end of the class.
Hw is 10% extra credit and she curves test scores which is awesome. She goes fast during lectures so its recommended to brush up on whatever that days lecture is on before coming to lecture. She responds fairly quick to emails and is open to reopening hw questions that you missed. Overall a chill prof but her teaching style isnt for me
Very test heavy (like 90%), but she gives a generous curve and hw is extra credit. She is super accessible and wants the best for her students. Very good lectures and always corrects any mistakes she makes. Overall she is very passionate and caring towards her students and I would absolutely take her again. Amazing professor!!
Ortony is such a good professor, all the hw is extra credit, & she makes her tests easy. Her office hours are so helpful and classroom-style. She's passionate about teaching chem and explains the topics really well. She curves the whole class at the end so you don't know your grade until after the final. Office hours & SI were so helpful.
Dr. Ortony is simply the best. Most genuine, knowledgeable, and friendly person ever. Very passionate about Chem and is extremely caring for her students. She wants YOU to succeed in and out of the classroom. Even though she has lots on her plate to juggle, students never take the back seat. It's been a true privilege to have her this quarter.
If you give this professor anything less than a 5… then you were probably the issue buddy. Definitely the best professor I've had at UCSD. Super engaging lectures and gives a ton of extra credit. Her TA's were very helpful and she really wants you to LEARN the content not memorize 11/10 would highly recommend.
She is probably one of the best professors out there. Homework is not mandatory, but rather extra credit. Because of this, the only things that truly make up your grade are the midterms and the final. There is a grade-replacement policy, which is generous. She does curve the scores at the end, and mostly in your favor. Made the course fun overall
I was worried bc she did not have that many reviews but she was super caring and extended deadlines often. All homework was extra credit and the grade replacement system was really nice bc the final was pretty decent. I would recommend taking her for 6A
Good professor for Chem 6A. No attendance mandatory and all homework on Achieve was E.C. (but helps a ton). I took AP Chem so I found it to be an easy class, but you still need to study for the more conceptual content. And there's also a curve which is nice.
Dr. Ortony is the best professor I've had. She's not only very passionate about chemistry and PHENOMENAL at teaching, but she genuinely cares so much for her students. If you get to know her, she's the sweetest person ever. It's very clear that she gives her all towards the course, despite that she's primarily a researcher with her own lab. 10/10.
She cares for your success and is very accessible. My problem was that a costly textbook gatekeeps 10% extra credit(qtr45$/yr85$). I couldn't afford it, but her lectures cover everything, so I still got excellent test results. The final can replace bad midterms, but 90% grade is tests. She lowers grade boundaries, you can succeed w/o extra credit.
HW is optional but adds 10% to your overall grade if completed. Even with that, I ended with 90%. Exam averages were ~65% and mcq, so getting even a few wrong can destroy your grade. Good lectures and genuinely wants students to do good, but exams were WAY harder than lecture or book examples and not accurate representation of student's knowledge.
Although she is a nice person, I just don't think she is fit to be a professor for such a large class. She doesn't let you bring cheat sheets to midterms or finals, and although her tests are all multiple-choice, they are pretty difficult—especially with midterms! A hit or miss I would say.
Ortony is a really caring, however when I looked at the other chemistry professor midterms compared with hers, the other professors were MUCH easier. This class was, personally, really difficult for me. It felt like her practice questions weren't like the exam questions which is why I struggled, IMO! I also had no prior AP Chemistry knowledge.
over all she is clear when she speaks, you can ask questions and she will make sure you understand, she is also accessible outside of school, during office hours, emails, or just after class, she is so kind She also gives 10% extra credit at the end of the quarter for doing the homework and curves the midterms + a grade replacement plan.
Professor Ortony was my favorite professor for my first quarter here. I did not take AP Chemistry and wasn't the best at Honors Chemistry in high school, but her class was accessible and she was a great teacher. I disagree with the ratings saying the midterms were too hard. They were fair. I ended with over 100% in the class from extra credit.
Amazing professor. She gives us a lot of extra credit for just doing homework. Her lectures are always very clear and engaging. She is also very caring, standing by students' perspectives and explaining everything we are concerned about. She is the best professor, and I 100% recommend her!
Great just the midterms were nothing that we worked on before hand just some small prior to knowledge for final make sure you look at midterms also make sure you are able to grab a equation and play with it a little bit but if you tank the first midterm this class is going to be a struggle for you
Having prior AP chem knowledge helps, but is not needed as long as you understand the material. Prof Ortony is super understanding and lectures are recorded and posted on canvas. Entire class is curved at the end so as long as you hit the average for the midterms and finals you should be fine. HW is extra credit, but is helpful and not super long.
Prof. Ortony was an AMAZING chem professor, she is so passionate about what she teaches and has a very fair grading policy/curve. The workload was quite reasonable and she gives you plenty of material to feel prepared for the exams.
Really good professor. Her lectures were easy to understand and she didn't go too fast. She records her lectures and posts them on canvas. Attendance is mandatory for discussion, but you can miss like 2 times. She had two midterms and the averages were like 70s, but she curves everyones grade. Homework also counts as EC
Best chem professor I have ever had! So good she deserves my rating, when she first came to UCSD she had no reviews of any sort so I went in blind. But boy did I hit the jackpot with this professor. She is the best teacher ever and her homework is ec and her exams are very fair. So happy she is receiving the love she deserves.
I loved Prof Ortony. Her lectures were amazing and she's super nice. Homework is EC and tests are curved, which helped a lot. The tests were hard and not always reflective of practice problems, so study as much as possible. Her lectures are podcasted and she posts slides. She gives you an equation sheet but no notes on tests. I learned a lot!
Caring professor, and she is very accommodating to her students and ensures fair assessment in the class. Her explanation of the concepts during lecture were confusing so it is important to consult the textbook (it helps!!). Extra credit, class curve, and grade replacement plan helped me (barely) pass the class.
I loved her as a person & prof, but chemistry on itself is confusing & I think on her part she could've done better to help students, for the entire quarter I had a failing grade and not until the final I got a 60% which got me a B-, including extra cred, she drops the midterm with final, attend office hours, & look at the midterms to prepare.
A little difficult to understand sometimes because how fast she goes but overall lectures covered everything on midterms and finals. Homework is extra credit and she also curves hard with her "grade replacement" opportunity where final grade can replace midterm grades.
genuinely if you want to succeed in chemistry please please please take this professor omg. holy mother of pearl ortony will save you even if you are not confident in chem. SO MUCH extra credit and a fantastic lecturer. the only thing is her midterms were short so like one problem is worth a lot of points but there's also a HUMONGOUS curve :D
Super nice lady, but expects you to already have a strong background in chemistry. I went in with 0 experience and was practically eaten alive- the other profs are much easier when it comes to testing.
Ortony is a solid professor, and though I had to watch lectures twice to get the material because she does go a bit fast, I had a very good experience. If you do homework, study, and go to lecture, you will do great. Exams are somewhat hard, but she curves a lot. Very cool lady.
Good at lecturing, but made the exams harder than expected. Very conceptual. Also, there were many mistakes made which was frustrating. In lecture, she would make many corrections, made a mistake on a version of the midterm which was announced 3/4 into test time, made the first midterm too long... Could've gotten a better grd w/ diff Chem6A prof
She's really nice and tried to make sure we got good grades. The exams were pretty fair imo and she curves the whole class at the end of the class. Her lectures are fine and the content isn't that hard
She really wants you to learn! Clear grading, accessible outside of class, and has good feedback. Seriously no complaints with this prof. Just put in the work and enjoy learning.
She provides several outlets in the case that you are behind in classes. You can tell that she is genuinely passionate about the material which makes her lectures very interesting and engaging. Toward the end of the quarter, she had to lecture very fast because we were behind and it was harder to understand the material.
A great instructor, her lectures are engaging, organized, and effective (I never felt a need to open the textbook) She's happy to answer questions and review topics. Discussion attendance is mandatory but the TAs are chill, just worked on practice problems. Midterms are multiple choice and there are trick conceptual questions thrown in.
She is a really nice and kinda cool. Really flexible, and homework was extra credit.
She is a kind and sweet person in general but her teaching style is very superficial. She teaches the basics but tests heavily conceptually on lessons that were quickly skimmed over. Be prepared to do a lot of your own studying outside of class if you aren't naturally a quick learner like me.
Flexible, passionate, listens to feedback, and cares about student success. Mandatory discussions. The quality of lectures varies, but she moves at a moderate pace. Exams are multiple-choice; questions include both elementary plug-and-chug equations and more involved conceptual problems. She curves the class at the end. Homework is extra credit.
professor ortony is so chill she is sometimes funny i like her a lot but holy moly i hate chemistry and i hate the class. i did SO bad on the midterms and i will NEVER take this class EVER again. I HATE CHEMISTRY. the final replaces the midterms but IM COOKED. PLEASE STUDY TRUST ME DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.
Amazing professor and the lectures were very informative. Book is required, but I never opened it. Homework is 10% extra credit (must buy access). Discussions were practically useless for me (and mandatory). If you bomb one of the midterms, you have a chance to get a grade replacement on the final which is really nice. 10/10 professor.
Ortony was awesome this quarter. Some of her lectures were kinda all over the place, but she was very aware of that and adjusted the midterms and finals accordingly. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory, but discussion attendance is. Her grade adjustment plan is also a life saver. 100% would take her classes again.
incredibly easy class. Ortony is the goat and records all lectures (which also aren't mandatory). discussions are mandatory but kind of useless. barely studied for the midterms and still got good grades. all HW is extra credit which is nice. Ortony really wants you to succeed.
I think her lectures are organised but her exams are very conceptual on a level she doesn't teach, to be able to ace those conceptual questions you would have to read the textbook which is very long, she is very nice but if you don't like choose all that apply questions don't take this class, also questions are a little but confusing on the exam
She is a very nice professor and you can tell she genuinely cares about the topic and her students learning the material. If you have to take 6A I would highly recommend taking her class.
Ortony's lectures were solid. Her class is graded entirely on tests, with 10% extra credit for completing homework, which was nice. Her tests are almost entirely conceptually based, nothing like the problems we went over in class, which made exams pretty hard. Discussion was mandatory but generally not too helpful.
Great professor, lots of opportunities for grade recovery, and exams reflected course content well. The only level of difficulty came from full MCQ exams that did not have room for partial credit. If you have a good conceptual understanding, you will excel.
She seems nice but she's not a good professor. I personally found it really hard to learn from her. During lectures she would just take answers from students shouting it out but never go into depth of where the answers came from and how to really solve questions. her discussion worksheets and practice finals from TAs didn't reflect the exams.
She really cares about her students' learning and her lectures reflect that. There is a lot of extra credit (10% for completing all hw) + curve at the end + grade replacement plan; she really wants you to get a good grade. The exams require a substantial amount of conceptual knowledge for tricky MCQ, hw is not reflective of exam questions.
Professor clearly cares about her students and implements many methods to raise your grade (grade replacement plan, extra credit, etc.). However, homework and discussion sheets aren't representative of the exam questions and it can be tricky to study for the exams. Amazing professor, just difficult tests and hard concepts to understand.
Professor Ortony was a great professor; she cares about the students' grades. Very flexible gives homework, but it's all extra credit, so I suggest you do it as it does help with the exams. 2 exams and one final with three sections, but if you do well on the cumulative final, each section can replace your grade on the midterms.
Fierce and confident professor. Watch online lectures to study. Midterms are very conceptual. Finals are similar to: midterms & ex. questions in lectures. TA's are nice but not as helpful. Extra Credit + Huge Curve. No cheat sheet, but don't worry; not needed for tests. Learn a lot of concepts. Lots of thinking. You learn to love her as a professor
Professor Ortony is a great person and passionate about chemistry. Lectures aren't mandatory and you can be watched later. Content is pretty dense and is does require studying as are most STEM classes. Lots of extra credit is offered in the class which is very helpful. Discussions mandatory.
This prof sucks do not take her hardest exams ever in comparison to other teachers. curve is bs. do not take her!!!!!!!!!!!
never take this professor she structors the class in a way where the midterms don't even matter and basically making the final worth 90% of your grade. In class the lecture covers basic information and the exams are much harder than any of the practice material you go over. She's so lazy she only does multiple choice exams no partial credit.
Great class but honestly just make sure you focus on understanding concepts rather than memorizing; her tests are very concept heavy and very minimal on math. Midterms are a bit of a time crunch but you can make up for it on the final. Overall though you'll be aight.
Prof. Ortony created practice exam questions that resembled content on the actual final. Overall lectures were great too, highly recommend! All questions on final exam were conceptual. They were fair, no surprises.
Overall good professor, but mainly graded on tests. However, she does provide 10% extra from homework, which helps a lot + curves. Make sure to read the textbook because she tests on a lot of conceptual topics. I didn't do so well on the 1st midterm and did well on the 2nd, and studied 2 days before the final, and still got a good grade
She makes the material easier to understand and cares for her students' success, but her exams are a heavy 90% of the grade, and her question formatting can be ridiculous at times.
HW is extra credit and not too much to do. She does go a bit fast in lectures, however the exams reflect what she teaches well imo and they are fair if you study well. The curve + ec are lifesavers and she truly does care about you doing well in the class. Discussions are mandatory though.
It was lowkey my fault for choking on the exams and not really studying, but Ortony is the GOAT. HW is extra credit & combined with the curve allows for a very generous grade. Lectures go by fast, but she covers key concepts. Focus on learning the actual concepts, as the math is easier, and she tests more on conceptual knowledge than just the math.
Lectures were engaging with practice. Exams had easy plug and chug math questions and other difficult conceptual heavy ones. Discussion attendance is mandatory, but worksheets not the most helpful since it didn't resemble anything on the exam. Gives 10% extra credit if you do all the homework by the end of the quarter. Super understanding though!
Real nice, but the sheer amount of mistakes on the final was laughable. I'd never taken a chemistry class before her, but math-wise, lectures and TA review sessions helped. I struggled heavily with the conceptual problems, which is why my grade is so low(not very beginner-friendly/no partial credit on MC). Tests 90% of grade. Generous curve/ec tho!
Kind professor who cares about students. Much of the exams (all MC) were conceptual, and had many multiple-answer questions, which made it more difficult. However, she is very open to feedback, and will adjust to fit class needs. Homework is 10% EC, and there is an overall curve. Taking any chemistry in high school helps!
Overall, a really good professor who gives a lot of extra credit. ALL the hw is optional for extra credit. Wants you to succeed and really prepares you for the tests and exams. You just have to be willing to put in the effort because it's chemistry.
If you're taking CHEM 6A, pick Prof. Ortony. She is very passionate in teaching chemistry and takes everyone in class to understand the material. If you've taken high school chemistry or AP Chemistry, you'll do great in her class. However, keep in mind that her midterms and final are based on conceptual knowledge, so actually read the textbook!
Homework is worth up to 10% extra credit, I finished with an 88.5 and got an A-. Test average is around 65 but she has a grade replacement plan if you do better on the final. She makes lots of typos but is therefore more understanding with students. Grade is discussion attendance, 2 midterms, and a final + extra credit homework.
10% extra credit from doing homework, discussion attendance required but not lectures, exams are very straightforward if you understand the material at all.
As some have iterated before, tests are majority of grade, doesn't go too deep into the subject. However, she's passionate about what she's teaching and is willing to answer any questions asked to her. Lectures are podcasted, discussions are mandatory, textbooks aren't mandatory to read but do help, homework is extra credit. Finals are cumulative
Clearly loves chemistry and wants to instill that love in her students. Just doing the HW earns 10% extra credit. Grade replacement ensures that final grades reflect overall knowledge @ end of the course, regardless of hiccups. A bit of a disorganized lecturer. Throws accidental curveballs on exams. Took a lot of textbook reading to stay caught up.
Chemistry is a difficult topic but Ortony makes it possible to pass the class even if you struggle with material. She makes you cheat sheets for tests with equations and the periodic table that's pretty helpful. One con of the class is that you do have to buy a book to do homework.
I got an 80% on the final + my midterm scores replaced and ended with an A. Our curve made it so 80-90% was the A range. The exams are really hard imo bc they were written weird. I have no previous background in chem. My biggest advice is study the midterms bc it will help w the final! Ortony is great but I might have struggled less w a diff prof
Really good prof, explains topics, lecture heavy (& posts videos), had office hours established (& bonus OH near exams), she will accommodate conflicting schedules. Very willing to help students. Don't get discouraged if you fail the first midterm!! Trust in the grade replacement plan. Read textbook and take notes, but focus on LE more for exams.
Really enjoys subject, also has really good grading plan for students and all HW is extra credit and can boost your grade by a letter.
Great prof overall. LEs are not mandatory but attending in person is better than watching the podcasts, while DIs are mandatory but rather not helpful. HW is 11% extra credit which is super nice. Curved the grade. Exams (2 midterms + 1 final) contain many conceptual questions, even though they're all multiple-choice.
Very straightforward grading; exams are all multiple choice, extra credit homework, mandatory discussions but not lectures. Class relies more on learning from textbook outside of lecture and then reviewing it with the professor during lecture. My TA wasn't very helpful during discussion, but professor was fine, just not my personal taste tbh
Great prof overall. Tests are all multiple choice and mostly conceptual, which many students did not like, but personally, I think they are easier and actually the best way to learn (and test) chemistry knowledge. Might be a harder class for some w/o strong background in chem beforehand, but she makes clear what will be on tests.
Sweet professor who wants her students to do well. All homework was extra credit and she curves a lot. Only downside was her way of teaching; I didn't learn much from her lectures because it was fast, and sometimes she would be confused with her own work. I didn't have any chem experience so this class was hard, but I studied hard and got a B
I dont like chem so I was dreading this class but Ortony made it a lot better. Shes super nice, remembers who you are, and has a lot of office hours in person to help people. No cheat sheet but its honestly better bc she only focused on fundamentals and understanding rather than memory. Tests are all mcqs which is scary but they were heavily curved
Amazing professor, lectures were clear but maybe moved a little fast at times. All homework is extra credit and boosts your grade 10% and the entire class is curved at the end. This class made me not hate chem even though its hard. I did rewatch lectures outside of class a bit to really get the concepts. Definitely choose this professor for 6A!
Thought the order of content was a little weird, but overall good prof. Class is pretty test heavy but there's a good curve system, just make sure you do all the non-test work.
Posted lectures are very good. Homework is all EC for 10% boost. Good test grade-replacement plan. The first part of the course is a review of high school chemistry. Very kind prof
she is so sweet! the class for me was a bit difficult bc i procrastinated a lot but if u show up to class and do work you should be fine. she offers 10% extra credit, and discussions are mandatory. if u struggle with chemistry already this class may be difficult but there is a curve at the end.
