I really enjoy this class and Sapin. She makes things understandable, and has good flow and connections. She obviously puts effort into her course, and it really helps. First Art Hist class I've taken, and probably not last because of Sapin!
A very good teacher. The lectures are intriguing and really keep you interested. The only trouble is that she has a real thing about trying to get the slides in focus all the time. It's kind of distracting...
She's a very nice professor, but the class is extraordinarily dull. You learn a few dates and terms and artists and styles which you have to prove on a multiple choise test. You don't learn anything about what's truly important with art, though.
This class is easy for Art History majors, but for those who aren't, it's a bit trying. Lectures are dull, and hard to understand. She's all over the place, and CONTINUOUSLY focusing slides that are already in focus. I really did not like this class, but still getting an A. Take for GPA booster
Julia is AWESOME. She is very into her subject and gets you into it to. Its a lecture class, so all you really need to do is know the slides and the online readings.
great!
i am absolutely in love with julia sapin. she is the most amazing woman i have ever encountered. i wish she taught every subject and every class.
This is one of my favorite classes so far. I enjoyed the material and think she is a very good lecturer, even if she is a little scattered. I wish that there was more time to go into depth in each of the cultures we studied.
VERY nice lady, very excited about subject, approachable and helpful. tests sometimes overhard but course overall is not. good lecture pace. I liked everything about this class except for her troubles with technology ...
First test much easier then the following two, so don't be tricked by the easy first test. By overall not a hard class.
She is passive agressive and asks hard questions on the test. I am not the only one to fall asleep in class. Dull and didn't learn much.
She may be a decent teacher, but I get the feeling that she has no idea what she is talking about 70% of the time. Plus I think the class is boring, and I definitly fall asleep. The tests are akward and just get harder. Good luck if you take this class, I wouldn't if I could do it all over. Nor doI recommend it.
A very nice lady. Yes, her lectures can cause drowsiness but that mainly had to do with the dim lights and time of the day. I would recommend having her because she is very kind... cares about her students. Tests are easy IF YOU STUDIED.
This is was my first introduction to art history, and was nervous going in, but Sapin was an amazing teacher. She knows what she is talking about cause she has been there and passionate about art. I now want to minor in it. lectures can get a little long, but you have to go and study for the A
Super interesting lectures dampered with the lights that were too low and a lack of enthusiasm from the GUR class. However i learned alot and would take her again in a heart beat.
The prof is super nice and helpful if you need it. The class is a bit challenging if your not an art history major. Just study the slides well and go to class and youll do fine.
Very nice professor she is so helpful. Pretty easy class, lot of class discussions. The readings are not very interesting and kind of difficult to follow but she clears up what the meaning is. She is very understanding of students. Strongly recommend this professor. :)
I found this class to be extremely interesting. The professor goes completely out of her way to be accomadating to the students in terms of study aids and reviews before the exam. If anything - there is a bit of overkill in this area. If you are the type of student who is a visual learner - this class should be a piece of cake. Highly recommend.
Julie is an amazing teacher. I'm not an art major but loved the class. She makes the class so interesting and it flys by. She loves to give extra credit opportunities and doesn't want anyone to fail. Great teacher and really has a passion for the subject.
great prof. great class. the only thing i would recommend is to take this class with a friend since notes are key to getting a decent grade and with an hour and 20 min, it can be tiring. The more/better your notes, the better you will do on the midterm and final. BUT LOVE THE CLASS and it's very interesting!!!!
I didn't like this class all that much. The lectures were kind of boring, and there was way too much information on the midterm. She gives extra credit to make up for it, but I didn't feel like I learned as much as I would have liked to. The material was interesting but there was just a lot of basic memorization.
Very nice and enthusiastic about Asian art history. I don't really have an interest in this subject, but with a little work I got an A. She gives extra credit on exams. I'd recommend going to the study sessions. No need to buy the books! Seriously, she just tests from her lectures.
F-ing BRILLIANT!
excellent prof. even better person.
I took this class as a GUR and LOVED it! Ms. Sapin is really enthusiastic and gets you interested so studying hardly seems like a chore. The organization of material was well structured and easy to follow. She really got me thinking about the bigger picture in terms of time periods and other cultures. TAKE this CLASS from her!!
Sapin is an amazing professor. I'm taking her art history class at 9am and have never missed a class, and I am NOT a morning person. She makes lecture fun, interesting, and worth going to class. She tells you EVERYTHING that you'll be tested on (4 exams), go to class, take notes, study, and you'll get an A. It's my favorite class this quarter.
Most people seem to like her because of how easy the class is. It is easy, but it is also mostly pointless. This class has the potential to teach people how societies throughout history share information, develop religious ideas (reciprocal relationship w/ iconography), etc - but instead you get loaded with tedious, stodgy "image" analysis.
I went into this class not sure what to expect. My suitemate is an Art History major and absolutely loves this professor. If I had the chance to take a class from Sapin again I would. She is bubbly, friendly, technologically challenged, and is just fun to be around. By the way, If you study for the test (I used flash cards)you'll do fine I promise!
easy. but go to class, or have a buddy for notes b/c all the answers to the test are in lectures (just the significance part) everything else you memorize (title, artist, era, medium-all given to you, just print) readings are UNNECESSARY,actually forgot we had readings, but got an A. just studied a few hours using flash cards the night before exams
This professor is extremely enthusiastic and friendly and knows her stuff. Will help you find answers to any questions. She has a good sense of humor and tries hard to look at art from many cultural viewpoints. At times a little disorganized, but overall she's clear and tests are predictable. Definitely worth taking her classes!
Julia Sapin is a professor that expects her students to be committed to her work, but she is fun, friendly and quirky and will go far out of her way to be of assistance. If she doesn't know something, she will research it on her own time to be as helpful as possible. She loves her work, and it shows in the enthusiasm she brings to the classroom.
I really liked Professor Sapin and this class! Everything is extremely clear and easy to understand because of the study guides and lectures that she provides. If you come to class everyday and take notes on the study guides, you'll pass easily. She also sets up study sessions before each test to ensure that students can get help.
I was scared I was going to fail this class cause I have no interest/clarity on East Asia. But I feel like I enjoyed this class SO much just because of Julia. She is really interested in the things she teaches and I think that is crucial and what a lot of teachers lack these days. Be sure to go to class-- even if its at 8am!
I signed up last minute for this class with no real interest, but it turned out to be my favorite class! It was very interesting and her enthusiasm makes it even better! You should really take this class!
Good teacher. Only two complaints. Reading was absolutly pointless and didn't help for the final exams. The second is the final exams didn't always reflect what she says. Somtimes there are questions that are on the exam that she only says once and its really annoying for studying purposes. Better study guide would of been better. 7.5/10
Toughest 3 credit class I've taken & NOT worth risking your GPA. The teacher favors the art major students heavily. If you ask a question about a past lecture, she accuses you of skipping class and is reluctant to help. She does know her stuff & is excited about the material, but found the TA more helpful than her. Take a different GUR if you can.
Julia is so sweet and so passionate about this subject! She made this course really interesting and the class is easy as long as you attend every lecture and take notes. She is also is willing to take the time to meet with you and is always offering review sessions before exams. Three exams and the only homework are a few blackboard posts
Julia Sapin is a great professor! I've read on here before that she only cares about art majors, but I don't feel that's true. The is genuinely interested if you come up to her and she's extremely helpful. If you take her class, ignore the slides! Don't try to make sense of the numbers! Write the number and what she says, then type it onto her prez
One of my favorite professors. Julia was very excited to teach and was genuinely interested & passionate about the subject (Visual Cultures in East Asia). We had assigned readings before class, which were very easy and informative. Make sure you attend every class because she goes over each piece of work, but does not include it in the powerpoints.
Took this class as a last minute option. I personally don't have any interest in east asian art, or any art at all for that matter, but I did find alot of the material pretty interesting. Lectures can be dull at times though. Readings are 100% unnecessary. Go to class, take notes, and its an easy A.
This course is very easy A if you remember the facts about all the stuff discussed in lecture. Her study guides are EXTREMELY helpful because they have every thing you need to know for the exams and QUIZLET is a life saver. A lot of excellent notes on there if you missed any details on certain artifacts. Readings are not required to pass. Offers EC
I took this class as a filler for my credits, but I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. I knew nothing about East Asian history or art history for that matter, but she's very clear and starts from the basics. My class 3 tests and if you study profusely you can get A's on all of them. I made the mistake & slacked off on my last test.
Do not ever skip if you take her. I skipped one class, and it made such a mess of one of my exams. Exams are difficult if you don't to go class, but entirely manageable if you and take good-ish notes. She's incredibly into what she does, and is really quite approachable. And that thing about her favoring art history students just isn't true.
Julia is a great professor. She is very clear, knowledgeable. If you miss a class, its not hard to catch up. Plenty of images to memorize, but not more than usual. She provides study guides and powerpoints to help study for tests. She is also very understanding and helpful in family emergency situations.
Good for art history majors willing to put in the work, terrible for a GUR. Has the workload of a four of five credit class. She often goes on tangents that don't relate at all to the subject matter which makes it very difficult to weed out what will be on the tests. Be prepared to take a ton of notes, study for several hours, and still barely pass
Lectures were boring. She reads off a paper the whole time and makes it hard to follow. Tests are okay; a little confusing in format. Okay subject material, but not the best professor to take it with. It's not awful. But it's not good.
Pretty good professor, very nice and considerate. My only problem was that she was perhaps too nice. People talked over her constantly. She isn't the most charismatic, but she's a genuinely nice person who's passionate about what she teaches. And as long as you go to class you'll ace her exams.
Julia is a total delight! I took her for East Asian Visual Culture. She is so enthusiastic about what she teaches, and gives a reasonable workload. She is so knowledgeable about the subject, you can ask her almost anything. You can get away with missing a lecture or two as long as you get the notes from a classmate.
I love Julia! She's a great professor. No textbook required, but she does assign some articles and videos to read and watch before the next class. Her study guides are very helpful and she posts her powerpoints online. However, you need to attend class in order to get the info because her powerpoints only consist of pictures. Amazing overall!
I'm taking Julia's class right now. This is the first quarter they're trying out this new art history class. So far it's going great! You don't need to buy a textbook. You'll have three exams, including your final, and quizzes every so often on reading she'd assigned online. She's is really clear about what will be on her exams
Julia seems like she knows a lot about the subject, but has a tough time communicating her ideas to students. Quizes are crazy hard, and she regularly ostracizes people for not knowing art terms (Its a GUR come on!). Take her if you're in love with asian art, but otherwise prepare to be annoyed.
Julia is great. She is charismatic without sacrificing control of the class. Asian Art History was my favorite class this quarter. Julia really knows what shes talking about and makes it really interesting! Definitely take one of her classes, shes awesome.
Quizzes and test were pretty easy.
Julie is a good professor. She knows the content and is really passionate about it, but sometimes has a hard time communicating her ideas and is a little unorganized. Otherwise, she is knowledgable and is very clear about her expectations (which aren't unreasonable). I didn't need to go to class much to do well in the class, it was pretty easy.
The unorganized, confusing format of her exams was unnecessary. Her formatting just takes up precious exam time to just understand what shes asking. There were many times in class where the whole class was left confused and she acted as if we were all in the wrong. We felt shamed/demeaned/uncomfortable many times in class, and thats not okay.
Julia is an okay professor. Sometimes she's strict with her students. One time when a student asks her a question she said that if you came to the last class you would've heard this and that was disrespectful. The student was only asking for clarification. Your being graded by 3 exams and all of them are 100 points each. Just study.
Very unorganized and the exams are confusing. She goes on tangents. Overall a very unpleasant class to be in.
The class was not very organized and I think it was too difficult. It was hard to know what to study for. Shes a nice lady though and she knows her stuff. I would not recommend this class unless you are really interested in art history.
Julia is an amazing professor! You have to show up to class to get all the information. She covers all the reading content and material you need to know- so you don't really need to do the reading assignments. She's very clear on what will be on the exam- so if you study, you'll definitely pass. It's a bonus that her lectures are fun.
Julia seems like a nice person. But I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels like the lectures are unorganized and not well thought out. The exams are extremely challenging not only from the content but with the strange format she uses on her exams. Don't take her class unless you 100% have to.
Do not waste your time with this irritating professor. Her test setup is so beyond stupid it blows my mind, extremely confusing. She is so condescending and unlikable. I emailed her 4 times & she legit asked me a question that I answered in my email? Very rude and the class is way harder than it needs to be. If she reads this maybe learn something!
Terrible test format. Ask a question and you get a very subjective answer. The class should be 4-5 credits because of all the required reading and videos. We had quizzes and tests back-to-back (every class period). You should take a different GUR instead :)
Sapin is the most condescending yt lady who should not have her job. She lacks the empathy needed to teach history about cultures she does not participate in. Her blatant outoftouchness makes her class painful during this pandemic. I asked for an extension because of the side effects of my 2nd vaccine dose and she said I should've planned better
Lectures are very crucial to pass this class, but they are also fascinating. Professor Sapin clearly has a deep understanding of the material and is very intelligent when she speaks about the visuals. There is no cumulative exam and each exam has extra credit possible. The exams are very comprehensive and doable if you take good notes and study.
Just pay attention in class and study a bit and you will be fine. Fantastic class, fantastic content, zero homework, great structure for learning. Go to the study sessions. Take some notes.
Honestly a lot of work for a 3 credit class. A lot. But most of my art history classes are like that. Prof Sapin is smart, kind, and caring. Class is difficult and long but organized well and not hard to get a hang of the exam routine.
This ended up being one of my favorite classes during the quarter, Julia is very passionate and knowledgeable about this subject and you can see it in her lectures. In this class, your grade is based only on the exams but she creates really clear study guides, and along with the notes from the lecture and using the slides you should succeed.
Just OK. She is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, but the slides have so little information on them that if you miss class for a day, you will HAVE to get notes from someone, or else you'll pay for it. The midterm was formatted fine, but the study guide and one page of notes she allowed left me feeling very unprepared.
Slides contain no information, so if you miss a day you have to get notes from someone and pray they took good notes. Assignments are strange and arbitrary, and communication is extremely lacking. She seems to not know who she is trying to teach to, the Art students or the EAST students. Grades based on how "correct" your analysis is.
This class is only 3 credits, but I am spending a lot of time on it. 2 lectures a week, each is about an hour-long video. Added to that, discussion posts require about another hour of reading. She is very knowledgeable and seems super excited about the class, which is great! just more of a commitment than expected for an online, 3-credit class.
Joke of a class requests 15-20 hours a week within the syllabus for a 3-credit online class. She seems incredibly interested in the class material but the content of her lectures is abysmal. It's simply a handful of quizzes and 4 hours of drawn-out pre-recorded lectures. Should look into retiring as technology has surpassed a need for her.
A passionate professor but lacks critical thinking and empathy toward her students. You are not allowed to even see your fellow students' discussion posts until you post yourself! Hindered learning my entire time in her class. Needs to be fired.
There were two lectures to watch and a quiz to take every week along with a discussion post every other week. In the syllabus, she says you will need 15-20 hours a week for this class but I really only spent 2 max.
This class has 3 units (China, Korea, Japan) and 3 tests (one on each unit). Lectures are twice a week and very informative, outside homework is mostly just watching documentaries/videos or reading articles (lowkey optional).
Professor Sapin is a funny individual, her lectures are good and the way she talks and comments she makes are funny. Attendance isn't mandatory, as there are study guides with all the information you need for the exam on them, but sometimes in lectures she'll talk about content not on the study guide. 3 units (China, Korea, Japan) all are MC.
This class is relatively easy as long as you take notes! Some people in this class were such a headache but Professor Sapin handled them with a lot more patience than I would have. Really a cool lady
3 credits class. What a joke.
Great professor. gives out clear study guides for the tests and homework and reading isn't too heavy. Great class! I would take a class from her again.
As an Asian American I find professor Sapin's classes to be extremely white washed and is strictly taught under a white lens. Her Asian art history classes reinforces to her white audience that Asian culture is no more than just novelty and barely scratches the surface in regards to the complexity of Asian culture.
Doesn't know answer to any questions
I liked Julia when I took her lower-level classes, but this quarter she has been a bit all over the place. I don't like the format of the class, for being a WP3 we spend over half the class reading and discussing. Then she gives you 2 days to write your 10-page essay. Her writing workshops are not helpful and I wish we started our essays Week 1.
If you don't show up to class you will fail. There are little resources outside of the lectures for course content. Her lectures are phenomenal. They're extremely entertaining, with very interesting content. The class is relatively easy if you put minimal effort into studying and taking notes. She's very kind in her office hours. Genuinely great.
Awesome professor. Do not expect this class to be super easy. If you don't come to class you will probably get a bad grade. 90% of the material on the exams is explained verbally in her lecture. Therefore, you need to either come to class or get notes from someone else in the class. But if you show up and pay attention, you will get an A.
This class was fairly easy as long as you showed up to lectures and took notes. She held lots of study sessions to prepare us for tests which were also fairly easy if you took advantage of the notesheet she allows you to use. Would recommend if you're looking for an easy yet interesting GUR to take.
I had taken 2 of her lower level classes that were delightful and engaging. Yet her 300+ classes are a nightmare train wreck of a class. She doesn't have the intelligence or the savvy to be a thoughtful and insightful leader and professor for this level. Prepare for unclear expectations and assignments with little to no thought put behind them!
