He's a very nice guy, but expects a lot for the exams. (Not much different than any other biochemistry professor) He did offer some extra credit quizes which he announced ahead of time and said exactly what was going to be on the quiz. He's one of the better biochem professors.

Dr. Chen's exams are pretty tough, but he's fair in that he offers extra-credit and outside tutoring. I started out with a 60% and went up to a 90% in 4 weeks. He might be tough, but he sure knows his stuff!

I wished that he taught concepts,instead he is CRAZY about DETAIL. He will ask you the weirdest detail that you thought he was not going to ask. For his exams, you have to literally MEMORIZE EVERYTHING. I wish also he limits the text on his ppt slides. There are so much info on his slides that makes you distracted and you forget the main idea.

Very fair in grading tests, and offers quite a bit of extra credit. UTILIZE THE EXTRA CREDIT! Very detail oriented so know EVERY part of each slide. Just because it's in small print doesn't mean it's off limits for the test.

He is a great prof. His teaching inspires grad students towards research. I was so interested in his class that I prepared everyday before I went to his lectures. No boring slides. He is lenient in grading. Even though is his Asian and all that, there is no problem understanding his English.

He is a tough professor. I worked harder in this class than any other class this semester and still didn't get an A. I sure did learn a lot though. He covers A LOT of material and you need to spend time memorizing small details. Some his questions were really tough because they were really nit picky.

4 tests. You literally have to know everything from the slides. he does clicker questions so easy participation points, accents not too bad. hes a cute old fellow.

Dr. Chen is an excellent instructor and makes the class expectations very clear. Tests are straightforward, and he will assist you in preparing for them by pointing out key concepts.

Provides everything you need. Lots of information, but that should be expected in a majors level, and upper division class. He absolutely cares about student progress and tells you exactly which concepts to focus on. If you apply yourself, he ensures you will receive an A with challenging tests but easy homework and attendance quiz points.

Great class, great professor. The material shouldn't be easy, its a 400 level biochemistry class. Nonetheless, Dr. Chen is very clear and gives you everything you need to make it easy. Take some responsibility for your own education, don't act like your hands are tied and you need to be spoon fed, and you'll be fine.

Chen is the man. This professor truly cares about his students and wants to help you succeed. His tests are straightforward and he specifies important information. Granted, this course is challenging but if you don't learn a lot from this class or at least come out of it with a B, then you probably shouldn't be here in the first place.

Compassionate person. Always there to help. Wants you to succeed (take advantage of Extra C). Always saying, "I could ask you this for the exam" plus, "this will be on the exam" also "if the concept is bold faced it will be on the exam" Great prof!!

The material for this class is not easy, but Dr. Chen makes it very easy to understand. He is always there to help and offers more than enough extra credit. He is really nice to his students, even some that don't deserve it. I wish he was teaching BCH 462!

Dr. Chen is a wonderful professor. He is very knowledgeable and engaging. 400 level biochem is not going to be easy but he gives you all of the tools to do well in the course. All of the material you are required to know is from the slides that he presents. He emphasizes important information so there are no surprises on the test. Highly recommend.

Dr. Chen is one of the best chemistry professors I've had. He is a very talented individual, kind, caring and he has high standards and expectations for his students. He is always there for office hours ready to help and will explain things further. Focus more on his slides and go to the text for clarification so that you won't feel so overwhelmed.

This professor is the best one I had this semester, very helpful durin office hours and gives out basically free extra credit. Tests are only hard if you make them hard, If you study a couple nights before you should get an A. He is truly a great dude and a great professor.

Chen is the best professor I've had throughout all the classes I've taken for my biochemistry major. He makes the class less stressful, even with the amount of materials we have to learn. Extra credit is given, the slides are perfect, and he is passionate about what he teaches. I would take any future classes with Chen.

Not the easiest class but you will learn a lot. Class attendance is mandatory due to clicker questions. Homework assignments didn't prepare me for the tests. Best thing to do to get an A is take really good notes. He tells you everything that will be on the test. I recommend recording lectures and going over them again. Lots of extra credit too! =)

Chen is a great teacher! The class is pretty easy,compared to what i expected, theres a lot of info but he highlights important material on the slides, getting a good grade requires the ability to read and remember info on the slides. should get a decent if you listen to what he highlights in class. oh and the review pretty much tells you the test

Dr. Chen was very easy to follow and lectured to the test exactly. Tons of extra credit was offered. Online homework required use of the book. Simple clicker questions were used for attendance points. Highly recommend

Dr. Chen is awesome. Go to class for the clicker questions, the 'take home messages' and for a good laugh! He's crazy smart and very passionate about what he does. He really wants students to learn the material. I genuinely enjoyed this class from start to finish!

He has an attendance quiz for every lecture. Each quiz is worth 8 points and only two questions. The easiest way to succeed is to read the notes the night before the class. He will call on people in the very back rows, so sit in the middle or front of the room. Also he offers extra credit.

For someone who once said he doesn't enjoy teaching, he's passionate and really cares about how well his students understand the material. Was not a terribly hard class; I didn't do as well as I hoped because I didn't put in more time to study. If you always pay attention in class you will do well.

He was a great professor and very passionate despite the fact that (like another rater said) he claimed during class to not enjoy teaching. Gave a lot of extra credit in the middle of the semester, allowed me to snag an A+. Wish I could take him again for BCH462. You won't be sorry if you take this guy unless you want to skip classes often.

Class structure:papers from scientific journals assigned reading, and then gone over in depth, 4 or 5 quizes, 1 semester worth research presentation, 1 semester researchpaper. Attendance is mandatory. no text book, he provides everything. Get ready to be called out in front of the whole smallclass to answer questions, overall I would reccomend

The course is hard, but Dr. Chen does everything he can to make it enjoyable and understandable. He tells you what you exactly what you need to know and if you don't listen to him, it's your own fault. He'll call you out in class so just go and pay attention. Tough grader though - you get points taken away if you guess on an answer and get it wrong

He gave out colored printings of powerpoint slides which were super helpful to take notes and keep tract in class (and save money of course). His lectures help me remember the concepts longer and clearer because I am a visual learner.

This is the best professor to take for biochemistry. Easy pop quiz clicker questions as long as you pay attention. Points out what is very important on lecture notes. Tries to make the class as easy to understand as possible. If you're worried about biochemistry then take this professor. Just go to class, pay attention, and study the notes.

The teacher is incredibly clear and concise. It's great to have the text book for reference but not necessary if you take the course with Chen. The power point slides are incredibly well done. He's very available if his office hours aren't convenient for your schedule. Work hard and you'll pass, if you're struggling, you're dumb. Simple.

Dr. Chen is my favorite professor this semester. His class is easy to follow, he provides clicker questions that relate directly to the slides. He makes a point to try and help you memorize important concepts. No need for a textbook, all test material is covered in the slides. Also offers extra credit to try and boost grades.

Dr. Chen is an amazing and humorous professor who loves to teach. He provides you with all the information you need to know for the exams. Prof. Chen he is a nice guy who obviously wants his students to succeed. He knows how dish out a little sass and it makes the class more lively. He went out of his way to provide us with printed notes, extra credit and hilarious ways to remember info. He also wears really sweet white Newbalances, I wish I could look that good in a pair of shoes.

Dr. Chen knows his stuff. He also makes himself available and is really helpful during office hours. Everything that you need to know to do well on the exams - quizzes can be found in the color-lecture notes that he provides for the class. Showing up and paying attention during lectures, apart from studying on your own can probably get you an A.

To start with, HE CARES ABOUT THE STUDENTS' GRADES MORE THEN THEY DO. give you all the materials to do great. He also gives extra credit. I love how he does clicker quiz because that forces me to study daily ( small portion) which would help me for the tests as well. office hours when ever the student wants. simple HE IS THE BEST. TAKE HIM.

His powerpoints are BAD. Gives little to no detail about topics on his slides but expects you to know the detail for exams. Also intentionally starts class a few minutes before the real starting time to make sure people who aren't on time miss quizzes. Called a girl out in front of the class for leaving early. Overall kind of has a rude attitude.

Dr. Chen is great, his powerpoints are to the point. I walked in late to one of the quizzes -I am ok with that, it is my responsibility to be there on time. Overall, I like his attitude towards rudeness in class-I am paying for the class -I don't want to hear other people's convos or interruptions. Don't major in Biochem if you want easy classes.

Julian is such a helpful professor and is extremely great one on one. There's a lot of material to be learned in the course, but it's biochemistry, what do you expect? There's also a lot of opportunity for extra credit. Chen makes jokes, and even gives you little funny tricks to help you memorize things like amino acids and their categories.

Dr. Chen is by far one of the best teachers at ASU. Lectures were informative, testing/grading is fair, and he genuinely cares about his students. He is a funny guy and helpful outside of class. Homework is the hardest thing to do - refer to the textbook if needed. Quizzes are free points if you go to class and pay attention. Tons of extra credit.

Dr. Chen is the best! Definitely cares about student success. His lectures are engaging and informative (he'll give take home messages from the slides). Overall, Dr. Chen is a good professor, better than the other biochem professors at ASU. He gives a lot of extra credit and provides clicker quizzes to test understanding. However, the tests contain more specific and obscure items from the material instead of concepts that one would expect, and no amount of studying would prepare me for that.

Easiest one of the best professors I have ever had at ASU. His lectures are great and makes the material easy to understand. Has his TA print all the lecture slides for you at the beginning of the semester. If you are a good student and study his lecture slides, you will pass the class with an A. I can tell from a certain post below that one might expect the class to be easy because of the low "difficulty" ratings. However, this course requires commitment. Dr. Chen is very organized!

He is the most caring professor who always wants his students to get highest grade as possible he can offer. Test based on his powerpoint slides and not too hard, you just focus on detailes that he hightlined in class. Pop quizzes are easy, homeworks are textbook-dependent. He gives bunch of extra credits which help you end up with at least B.

Honestly was hesitant to take this professor but he is probably one of the best profs I have ever had. He is hilarious and makes the class super interesting. You definitely need to go to class as the in-class quizzes are for credit. But he offers extra credit homework which adds up to like 50 extra points. HIGHLY recommend him.

Honest review. Easy to pass, not to get an A. The class itself is not so difficult but the tests require a lot of memorization and thorough studying of his lecture notes. I received 1 A, 2 B's, and 1 C on my exams (so do the extra credits)! Dr. Chen can be pretty strict and blunt at times, but he is willing to help. Also, clicker questions matter!

As people say, Chen is very funny; his mnemonics are always memorable because of this. A good prof, but be aware that he sometimes gives punishment to the whole class for a few cheaters and he is somewhat condescending/hard to approach. I'd still take him again in a heartbeat, because he really does struggle to make his students succeed.

Highly recommend. Teaches the material in a way that easy to understand. Will literally color code lecture notes that you will use instead of a textbook to tell you those things are really important and will literally be on the exam. Gives quizzes 1-2 a week if you pay any attention at all its a free 200 points and gives a good amount of EC

Chen is a nice guy. Lectures are kind of boring -he turns the lights down low and talks for 50 min. He color-codes the stuff in his slides that will literally be on the exams. He gives extra credit as well. He does have clicker questions about every other class but if you go to lecture and pay attention, you'll get an easy 200 points from them.

His lectures are very organized and his lecture slides have all the information needed for exams. 4 exams throughout the semester, each worth 25% of your grade. No cumulative final exam. Extra credit is given in form of homework and clicker-questions.

Like some others have said he can be a little harsh at times but he is a good guy and wants you to succeed. His power points are concise and provide all material you need for exams. He has a dry sense of humor which helps lighten the mood. Biochem can be a lot of work but nothing some studying won't fix for his class. He stays on zoom after class.

He covers a lot of material for each test; 10 ch. in 1 exam at one point. I found the best way to study was making flashcards using his lectures&*review* zoom recordings. He gave a few opportunities for extra credit, pretty generous. An 85% to 90% will get you an A- so that's also cool. Beware of "it's common sense" when you ask a question.

This may not be the best semester to rate, but 4 exams 20% each (no cumulative final), easy homework graded on accuracy (20%). The last two exams were easy basically all of the answers were mentioned in the review lecture or on the slides. There's a couple of easy extra credit points, but less than past semesters (I think). He's tough but not awful

Excellent professor. Loves biochemistry. The negative comments here are probably premed students who just care about the material on the tests and not actually learning biochemistry. Dr. Chen gave me a great intuition for biochemistry. Although not required, he even made learning all of glycolysis a breeze with his intuitive style. A+ for Chen.

Grades are 20% hw and 4 20% exams (none of them are cumulative!) Though he covers a lot of chapters for each exam, he does not test them in extreme detail so it's more like an overview of each BioChem topic, which I liked. He was generous with grading and with extra credit, and he tells you exactly what to focus on studying for each exam.

This semester put a lot of students on edge and there was tension between a few students and Dr. Chen, which at times made it difficult for me to learn. Dr. Chen is a great biochem professor. He encourages students to genuinely care about and engage with material. During test reviews he specifically highlights all of the important concepts which makes studying much easier as a lot of material is covered. Switching to zoom format was tough on everyone, but overall I would recommend this class

Some might think he's rude but I thought he was funny and truly cared about his students (would offer to teach extra sessions on SATURDAYS for anyone that wanted to learn more). Exams completely based off lecture slides (difficult but nothing unexpected), lots of extra credit, genuinely enjoyed this class.

Dr. Chen's class is very fast and has a lot of content. It's not easy to keep up with and it can be overwhelming at times. Overall though, the grading is very lenient (almost the entire class got an A or B) and you learn a lot. He really wants his students to learn the material and succeed.

Im not sure if it was the fact that this semester was online, but he did not express any of the characteristics in the past reviews. His RMP was so good but when we began class It sucked... the homework assigned had nothing to do with the exam or lecture material and he requested us to only study from the slides which at times were not helpful

Always take note when he says "this is important" or "let me repeat again" since it would be on the test. Remember colored texts, those words stand out for a reason. Don't hesitate to email him with any questions or problems you have, he will help. Understand your "foundations" before moving onto another chapter/slide. he records every lecture

Professor Chen was one of the best professors I've had at ASU. He teaches the content in a straightforward way, and the tests are very reasonable. We had class averages above 80% for most if not all of the . I would highly recommend him for BCH361.

4 exams, account for 80% of your grade. He gave 30 points extra credit and class is graded on a curve. Attendance isn't mandatory, he records all lectures. He's a good teacher, but exams are tough, his exam questions try to trick you. Mostly study highlighted powerpoint material for exam, but will throw in random non-highlighted material on exam.

Dr. Chen is very sarcastic and mainly reads from the slides but his tests are very straight forward as long as you have everything in the slides down. There are 4 tests with no cumulative final (you end the semester before finals week) and easy homework after every chapter. He also offers a lot of easy extra credit.

Not a bad choice, it's not too terrible and the tests are straightforward but Dr. Chen is very rude and not easy to approach/ask questions. 4 tests 20% each and homework assignments another 20%, some extra credit points but don't rely too heavily on that. Sometimes it is hard to follow the professor but the lectures are recorded and slides posted.

Dr. Chen is one of the best professors Ive had at ASU. He is extremely student focused and does what he can to make the course doable. He posts his video lectures online, which I found very helpful. I had one conversation with him outside of class; he was very approachable. I routinely saw him being kind to students when he didnt have to be.

Dr. Chen gives you many opportunities for extra credit (which is the sole reason I got an A) and tests are straightforward if you do the work! You need to study his slides. Every answer to the test questions can be found on the slides. Sometimes he emphasizes what he expects the take away to be , other times you have to infer.

Professor Chen is a great professor and his exams are pretty fair (just study the slides and you should be fine). However, for our class, the entire grade is soley based on exams and he only offers a small amount of extra credit. In the past, his exams used to be worth 80% of the grade with 20% homework, but now, your grade is 100% based on exams.

Professor Chen is an excellent teacher and I feel I have learned a lot from his class. However, his grading system isn't so great, especially because 100% of your grade is based solely on exams. In addition, his exams can also be pretty difficult at times and if you mess up on one it pretty much dooms your grade.

Dr. Chen is an great professor who has clear expectations. While the grading system is test heavy, he provides the tools that are needed in order to succeed in those exams. Julian Chen is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He offers extra credit but then grades it super hard.Not to mention it has almost zero relevance to what will be on the exams. The sheer amount of information that is covered for the exams makes it impossible to remember everything, especially the niche detailed questions he asks!

Considering that Biochemistry is not one of my strong suits, he is a great professor. He highlights what he will put on the tests AND he is very clear about what we need to study in review sessions and during class. He is lighthearted and makes class fun with jokes. His slides are literally your study guides, so treasure them!

Professor Chen is an amazing teacher and I really enjoy his course. The people who do badly in his class are the ones that don't show up and they somehow miraculously think they can simply just get a good grade by doing so. You have to earn your grade, but you're guaranteed at least a B if you just study the slides, which is basically the exam.

This class is not that hard if you take your time to review the slides - which is manageable because you don't have to read a textbook or do busy work assignments. The lecture slides will be your best friend. Listen to him closely in lecture as he tells you want you need to know for the exam.

Tests are based on information provided on the powerpoint slides. If you read the powerpoint lectures and rewatch lectures videos you will do fine. He also does exam reviews before every exam and points out important material that you need to know for each exam, which helps when figuring out what to study for each exam and what to mainly focus on.

I learned so much from Professor Chen's class! He is a great teacher and his lectures are very interesting. Tests are very easy if you simply study the slides, which is basically the exam. All I have to say is he is the best in the business. Biochem is a hard class, but he makes it so much easier to understand and he really simplifies the concept for students to comprehend. 10/10 and you're making a mistake taking anyone else. This class was just meh. Grades are dependent on basically 4 tests @ 250 pts each. Attendance wasn't mandatory as all the lectures are available on Canvas. When he says don't pay attention to the enzymes, PAY ATTENTION TO THEM ANYWAYS, they show up on tests. I rented the book and didn't use it once. I'm not a biochem fan but this class was ok.

Biochemistry is a nightmare in general. Some people either do really well with his style of teaching and others (me) do not. Luckily, Professor Chen has a lot of extra credit and I HIGHLY suggest you try to attend lectures as much as possible even though its not mandatory AND read the slides before so you can actually ask questions during class

He is able to explain a lot of difficult things in an easy way but biochem in general is going to be hard. The only things you get graded on in this class are 4 exams and a good amount of extra credit opportunities. If you dont go to in-person, he records lectures and puts them on canvas. he also does not take attendance

Dr. Chen only uses exam to determine your grade. They are EXTREMELY memorization based and very hard. In addition, he'll say that you do not need to know certain concepts during lecture, and they will absolutely show up on exams so do not trust this. Would not recommend, consider taking BCH at a different campus.

Dont take anyone else. If anyone complains, they clearly have not had a nightmare chem/bio professor. He is "big picture" focused, but there will be plenty of rote memorization. No homework, 4 tests, plenty extra credit. For success: 1. Watch lecture/don't take notes 2. Watch again/take notes. 3. Study packets, prioritize big picture then details.

He's a nice professor and it's clear he knows what he's teaching. The powerpoints have everything you need for the exams. The class is graded purely on four exams + an optional final. He does offer extra credit here and there, make sure to do it. It's biochem so you're gonna have to work for the grade you want but the class is pretty fairly graded.

Dr.Chen is very rude and always has an attitude toward his students. Also, he constantly is voicing how disappointed he is with his students. Went to his office hours because I have classes during his TAs' office hours, and he said to not schedule office hours with him for anything related to biochem content. He's also quite condescending.

Dr. Chen was easily the worst professor I've had in all 4 years at ASU. Massive lectures, tons of material, and extremely specific question on exams. The exam averages were always terrible, and while he curves it is not enough to save your grade. He has a thick accent, so if English is not your first language or you struggle with hearing good luck.

Exams were some of the hardest I have ever taken, and filled with trick questions on topics that are already insanely difficult and confusing. Reads off his lectures and doesn't say additional info. Ive seen a lot of mixed reviews so heres what I know: 4 Exams (mostly multiple choice 35/40 questions) 1 optional final that counts towards your grade no matter your score. 50 points extra credit. If you know the lectures front to back you should do well on the exam. He no longer posts lecture videos on canvas. No curve, vey dense class

Dr. Chen is amazing. He emphasizes what will be on exams, so study his PowerPoints well! No trick questions, lots of extra credit. The lectures can be a little boring, so he tries to make them more entertaining at times which is nice. The class is difficult at times, but 58% of our class ended with at least some sort of A.

Honestly Professor Chen was an amazing biochemistry teacher. There is extra credit opportunities to do that can really help to boost your grade. It is a difficult course as an upper division biology/chemistry course, but he does a good job at making sure you understand the material and what is going to be on the exam.

He doesn't post lectures and there is less extra credit opportunities. The material is very confusing and theres just so much information to know before the exam. We cant even listen over to the recordings to help us learn. Theres no practice problems and its just hard to study for. I rather take organic chemistry 2 again than take this class.

Very test heavy class, a little bit of extra credit spread around throughout the semester. He is really funny and knowledgeable but he tends to drone on a little bit which can lose your attention. Best option for Biochem at ASU, the exams in my opinion are pretty straight forward as long as u memorize the big idea concepts from the lectures. First, 3rd, and 4th exam are easy. 2nd one is very hard. The class in general is very content heavy. also NEVER ANSWERS EMAILS

TA's will not help you with extra credit homework before its turned in. Once it is turned in, they get frustrated with you for not understanding the material or asking any questions. Professor was passive aggressively demeaning at the beginning-middle of the semester. Until everyone got a 68% on the midterm. Hardly answers questions in lecture.

Dr. Chen was a great prof for biochem. The class has a lot of material to learn, especially the last two exams, but he tells you what to focus on when studying. Do the EC HW, it boosts your grade. 4 exams with 1 optional final. He uploads recordings from the lecture if you can't attend which was nice. He usually does a review in class before exams.

The class is graded by four exams (1000 points total) and extra credit homework (40 points total). The exams weren't too bad, but they were also difficult to prepare for. The class, despite seeming very hard, is fairly easy. Attend lectures (he will give test Qs during them). Do EC HW (Test questions will rely on that knowledge). If you ask a stupid question, he will make fun of you. He's hard to reach but his TA's suffice enough. Definitely a self study class.

Dr. Chen started off by telling us that we shouldn't even take notes, but to only listen to his lectures. I still took notes, but you definitely only need to study HIS lecture slides before exams. There were 4 exams and a 5th one that was an optional final. 40 extra credit points with homework questions that usually only take 30min to an hour.

I liked Chen's class for Biochemistry. He did a good job with the material in class and made sure to emphasize as much as possible as to what would be on the next exam. Most average professor and class I've ever taken. He was okay, I don't feel like he went very in-depth for the last half of the class (metabolism), and he was somewhat funny. USE THE SLIDES AS YOUR STUDY GUIDE! He's not joking when he says "red color is important". Loved his teaching style bc he makes sure you understand the big picture first. 1st and 3rd exams aren't too bad, 2nd exam is harder (metabolism) and the 4th exam was easy but tricky wording. Best way to study is to make your own questions based on each slide

"Too smart" for this class. He reads directly from his slides. Provided valuable information if you attended the lecture (what would and would not be on the exam). Discouraged us from taking the final. Seemed dismissive of the inherent difficulty of the topic. Had his moments of humor. Would not recommend to anyone, but it wasn't the worst.

Chen's teaching style isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for a professor who puts the fries in the bag, he's the one to take for biochem. He emphasized exactly what would be on the exams and even bolded them in red on the exams. He is super straightforward and I honestly thought his sassiness was entertaining and strangely motivating.

He teaches and tests off the slides. Nothing else will help you. Ask questions during lecture, he belittles you. If you go to his office hours and ask questions, he just points to the slides. Constantly makes comments about how no one studies, when most of us are just not picking up the specific into he wants us to know. Whole class has a curve.
