Great Guy, but his classes are not history they are history according to Madison. so Facts can some times not matter
No Comments
VERY INTERESTING...AS FAR AS TELLING HISTORY HIS WAY ...ISN'T THAT WHAT HISTORY IS ALL ABOUT ...INTERPERTATION OF THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE AND BACKING IT UP.
Disappointed in the class!! Black History turned into US History with a minor on African Americans, i wish i could get my money back. He's an .......
he is the nicest and easiest prof here @ scsu! he gives good curves and EXTREEMLY fair tests. he's funny and wants all his students to get A's and B's, and will do his best to make sure it happens.

Did not learn much about U.S History...it was all about African American history. Please teach what you are suppose to teach. Don't get me wrong..I think African American history is fascinating, but the title of the course was U.S History .
Worse ever
great teacher to listen to. he really knows his stuff and makes class interesting. plus he is really easy and he does not take attendence.
Dr. Madison is an awesome teacher, the smartest person I know. He really knows history! I never experienced him having an bias, so I don't know what all these other kids are talking about. His class made me want to study Foreign Policy further.
An icrediable teacher. really knows his stuff.
He's a really great teacher. Very informative. And has a great lecture style. Too bad he doesn't know his football.
Dr. Madison seems like a very nice guy, but in terms of grading his essay tests he is very detailed oriented. Most of the students in my class are at the point of failure. Fortunitly, he allows students to volunter at the library for extra credit.
Wow, Dr. Madison is an excellent teacher. The course is not easy, but he genuinely wants his students to do well. Very knowledgable, friendly and personable. Class is interesting, and he really cares about the students.
This was an alright class. If you don't like history you'll be bored outa your mind! He is a very nice guy but boy was it boring. I'm not really fond of his teaching style, it seems he talks in circles, but maybe its just me.
Great class and man. It was hard to recieve a good grade on a test.
Dr. Madison is an amazing teacher. You learn so much from him. I have taken him for numerous courses and he really made me interested in history. He is very helpful, tests and papaers are very fair, there to help. Highly recommend Dr. Madison!!!
Some people may find him boring and he jumps all over the place, so brace yourselves. He's very nice and helpful and his class is easy. Add as much info in your essays as you possibly can to do well, and volunteer at the library.
juilian is such a nice guy, interesting class, and will give you fact on crazy things that not many people know
Dr. Madison is a great person and his class can be interesting but, he is never clear on the assignments and there are several texts for the class. The exam is essay, he grades very hard and you often need to do outside research to do well.
great teacher
not that great. watched movies alot. felt that we could have learned much more. nice guy though
He's alright, but we could've learned so much more. His exams are a little difficult...they consist of one essay question you need to research outside of the notes and readings. He's a cool guy though, I did enjoy his class...and he's very friendly, he still says hi to me when he sees me on campus.
Prof. Madison is a great guy! His tests are essay form, and u need to read the texts, but they are not bad. He is funny and interesting in class. You'll enjoy his class!
Perfect professor!!! Please take him for any type of history.
he knows everything about history. His tests are in essay form, and u need to put in a lot of details to get a good grade, but if u read the book its not too hard. He also lets u volunteer at the library for an hour in place of taking a midterm and u get an A.
Nice guy, fairly easy tests. Increadibly knowledgeable and willing to answer any and all questions you have, even if not neccesarily related to the topic. Only complaint is that none of the stuff we go over in class is on the tests, it's all from the book.
good teacher. a lot of reading and a lot of papers. do Vol. work and get to miss one of his papers.
Brilliant Professor, makes you want to learn more.
you take from the class what you go in wanting to know and find out....if you're a sleepy know it all student than you will not find true meanings to the material
Teacher is great. He is a little hard to hear, so you may need to sit in the front. He gives you a few essays the week before a test so you can prepare. Also gives the option of volunteer work in lieu of an essay. Only 1 paper, one midterm- two if you don't volunteer, and one final. He is open to others suggestions and listens well. Great teacher!
AMAZING TEACHER... doesnt keep you the entire class... we just watch movies and he is extremely fair grader and very easy to approach! GET TO BE OMITTED FROM A TEST/PAPER IF YOU DONATE AN HOUR TO A LIBRARY FOR AN AUTOMATIC A~~~
He is a very nice professor. Hard to hear if you sit in the back. You have a lot of work to do,need to read 5 books, do a research paper. He lets you volunteer at library to get out of 1 midterm. very boring class, but nice teacher.
Very professional and nice person. Easily approachable and really wants his students (if they put forth the effort) to do well. He calls his professor friends at other universities to help students with research papers and can omit a test for an A with volunteer work. I'd highly recommend him for some1 who wants a knowlegable and helpful professor.
Very fair in grading papers mainly term papers. Instructions say one thing and when you get paper back he states something totally different. I feel he needs to change his grading system. He also needs to require less books to read. He must remember not every student taking is class is a History Major. I wouldn't take him for another class.
his exams are totally diffrent then wat he teaches in class..end up reading the whole book by urslef
Professor Madison is the man. He's so much fun and very helpful. You can actually get an automatic 100 on a test for doing an hour of community service! He knows just about all there is to know about his subject, and the papers are pretty easy too.
Although dry at times, Prof. Madison tried to make it better with interesting facts that will make the class laugh. He sticks to what the material is, andis EXTREMELY helpful. Don't worry if you fail a quiz, he will always make sure you don't fail his class. You can BS the quizes on the books but go to the classes and take notes for the midterm.
Dr. Madison was extra easy. I didn't understand one thing he said all year but I ended up with an A. Plus, I didn't read one page of any of his textbooks all year. You don't really need to purchase them even if he assigns reading. The midterm and final are essays that can be easily BSed. Plus, it's impossible to fail.
This class sucks dont waste you time...prof madison is nice but is really only interested in himself
Urban American History Graduate Class. Dr Madison is very nice, although the class was a bit disorganized- as though he did not plan it very well in advance. We were required to read 4 books and the majority of class time was spent presenting info on books. I learned a lot but it was mostly from my reading, not the few lectures.
Wonderful professor. Very helpful and extremely understanding. No attendance policy. Watched movies every class. Very knowledgeable. Lots of reading but its easy and you don't really need to know the books to write the papers. Topics are interesting and you can b.s. your way through most of the papers. I highly advise this course and Dr. Madison
I was a little confused as to why there are ANY negative comments about professor Madison. He is one of the nicest and most genuine people you will ever meet. His passion for History is apparent in his teaching style which is as informative as it is interesting. Truly helpful, and easily one of my favorite professors in 10 semesters at Southern.
This guy is great, the class is 3 papers, 1 of which is 10 pages BUT ON YOUR FAMILY HISTORY (Very Easy) plus 1 of the papers he allows you to skip and gives you full credit for if you do 1 hour of community service, a real nice guy too. TAKE HIM
Great Teacher!!!!!!!!!!
Great everyone should take him!!!
While a great guy, Dr Madison was a little scattered and disorganized. Though, our class started turning into his other film class rather than historical methods. You can volunteer to get out of writing all 3 papers, which was sweet. I'd a little iffy on taking him again for any other classes.
Madison is the best. He is willing to help and give a lot of extra credit. essays are easy. He is a tough grader though so watch out.
Professor Madison offers lively lectures, has a great sense of humor, grades fairly, and is devastatingly handsome. Too bad he doesn't know squat about football.
A++ teacher, so awesome that he's in a class of his own. Take this teacher no matter what he teaches, you will be enchanted and enriched. Super special spirit and I really miss his class.
Madison is great. He is willing to help no matter what. his exams aren't too bad, but he always willing to give extra credit to help out. take him if you can!!
He's a very nice guy and knows his stuff. I had him for a lecture there were 300 kids he said it was the biggest class he's ever had. Doesn't follow syllabus exactly. Gives extra credit and as long as you take notes in class you will be golden come exam time. Overall not bad, but wouldn't take course for pleasure- it's a university requirement
AWESOME! He tells you what you need to know, assigns reading to allow for students to further invision the era he is teaching, and he gives ACCURATE STUDY GUIDES! So nice, so knowledgable... so glad I took his class and am looking forward to another
Great guy, great class. TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES IF YOU CAN, def wont regret it!
fabulous!
Madison is a great teacher. He gets a little lost in his lectures but he usually gets back on track. he is always available for help and always offers extra credit. He is a nice guy & he is extremely interested in history. Take him if you have the chance
pointless lectures. couldn't follow his lectures at all. i didnt attend a few classes because it was a waste of my time and i didnt learn anything. he's a nice guy and gives extra credit opportunities though. only midterm and final tests given.
I took this course during the summer. American History through film sounds decent, but when the class has nothing to do with history, it kinda irks me. We watched a few westerns, 1 documentary on the Civil War, and we watched the Longest yard. Honestly it was an easy A, so take it if you want a class like that; however if you like history, avoid
He is a gret guy!!!! His lectures are relaxing and interesting. The most easy going in the history department.
He is a very nice guy, but an awful professor. He just lectures the entire time, and shows us powerpoints. The powerpoints are not helpful and he moves way too fast. He gave us 6 quizzes but we only could take five, they have wayy too much information to be a quiz, but he does give extra credit sometimes, but its not too helpful.
He's nice, buut had no idea what he was doing. he tried to use a clicker, but couldn't figure it out so he wasted about 3 weeks of class on it. He gives you 100 things to study, none of which he goes over in class on his power points and only 50 questions on the quiz. I don't suggest taking him.
Dr.Madison is an excellent professor. His lectures are easy going and relaxing. You need to be interested in history to take him and then you will enjoy it! Definitely highly recommended!
Simply said: Great professor, makes it interesting, cares about students, good grader! One of my favorites in history dept.
simply the best professor to teach U.S history through film.
Awesome guy, for sure. A bit sloppy with his lectures, his exams are hard. Completely bearable though. This class didn't give me any problems. Make sure you do the readings for the exams though! I was surprised by one exam that was completely text based.
Easy going guy, class was a lecture. showing up or not(he wouldn't know)took attendance 3 times out of the whole semester. mandatory 4 quizzes, the final is a must but he give you 4 others that you have the option of skipping one. can not drop a low grade you have to skip one test. does require reading but most of the lectures covers it
The class is a lecture but he keeps it interesting. Attendance is not mandatory, (I attended about 50% of the lectures) He is extremely helpful and a very clear speaker. Our grade consisted of 4 multiple choice exams and 1 paper on a topic of our choice. He also gave extra credit here and there. I ended with an A- in the class.
Disorganized! Didn't know my grade until midterm which was a C-. Waiting on my final grade. Won't take anymore classes with him. Pointless and very very disorganized!
He uses videos and straight talking lectures. Always available for office meetings if you need it. If you don't do good on a test, he'll let you re-do it. Tests for 110 were essays and there was a 15 page research paper assignment. He just wants to see everyone pass though, so don't be afraid.
He's a nice, funny, and lenient dude. He does give lengthy, tough quizzes and straight lectures. He tends to ramble on during the lectures so attendance is not always mandatory.
I took three classes with Dr Madison. All three were great. Even if you are not a history major the work is not hard. Seems like a lot at first but not really. He is approachable and very understanding. He will help anyone because he wants all his students to succeed. Great guy!
Excellent professor. Work is not too difficult, but he does expect that you study and put some research into essay questions. Very approachable and makes lectures interesting and engaging. If you need a history class or are a history major, he is a worthwhile professor to take. Not a lot of grades, so do well on the few assignments given.
I really hated going to his lectures they were so boring and never interesting, he would put our huge lecture room of about 200 students to sleep. I wouldn't take his class again
Giant lecture hall, DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS!!!!!! DONT DO IT. YOU DONT NEED THEM. All grades are curves, four tests including midterm and final, and one large paper, all of them are worth 1/5 of your grade. If you try its easy, if you dont try you'll pass (but barely)
AVOID!! He just talks during lectures jumps back and forth so much you can not keep up and try to take any notes. Gives ONE test which is to fill an entire blue book on his question of choice, failed everyone but 5 people in the class. Gives final, just as bad. Unorganized, you don't know your grade until long after midterm grades should be posted.
He's one of the ones where you either love him or hate him. He gave one exam (which I studied for 20 minutes the night before) and I got a B where others in the class failed. I am a nursing major so it's not like a know a lot about history. He gives you the questions before the exam so as long as you know the in and out of them you will do fine!
Great, funny professor. Sort of boring when it comes to topic discussions but great anecdotes and stories
Literally worst online class and class I have ever taken. Felt like I could never get caught up, Three midterms which are three 10 page papers, a final which is a 12 page paper and a research paper which is 15 pages.
I had him for 2 classes over the summer, HIS 201 and 220. He was a very nice professor, and I learned more than I do in most online classes. The format was the same for each class: 1 paper per week for the entire length of the class. He did not respond to everything quickly but he was traveling and had limited internet access, which I understand
Dr Madison is a nice professor. He does lecture a lot. However if you listen and talk to him during office hours. He will always help. All his exams are essay format. 5 pages-12 pages. The more you write the better you should do.
Dr Madison can lecture a great deal. All exams and quizzes were essay format. A little annoying if you dont like to write a lot. He never gave multiple choice or true/false questions. He will send a study out before exams. He will always says the more you write the better. He encourages everyone to come see him during office hours.
5 quizzes essay format, 3 long papers 10-12 pages long, extra credit 2 pages and thats about it. He didnt use blackboard. Everything was via email. He did answer emails within 48 hours. I saved all emails with my grades. I earned an A. I wont miss all the papers but glad I did great. Be ready to write papers
The class itself wasn't too bad and he made the lectures interesting with his own fun anecdotes. We had 2 midterms (essays), a 10 page research paper, and a final essay. The more you write the better.
I enjoy Dr. Madison as an individual. He has a lot of personal history that adds to class content. I can only speak for an online format, but his communication isnt terrific. The syllabus says one thing and he wants another, there isnt great overlap when it comes to that. Great person, but not the best professor in terms of communication.
Difficult grader. Lots of papers. Unclear outline for what he wants on papers. No rubrics, just a sentence in the syllabus.
This class was the worst class I have ever taken. The amount of useless essays for exams were unbelievable, and felt like you never had a break because there was always a 5-10 page essay due. No other work in the class besides huge essays, and it isnt even a W course. Save yourself the trouble and do not take this class.
Grades fairly and gives a reasonable amount of work. If you have good time management and complete all the assignments on time you will definitely have an A or B in the class. You will have to read pages of a book then write a 1 to 2 page responses along with 4 page papers and then a 10 pg final. Overall, the class was not hard at all.
Gave wayyy to many assignments. over the semester we had 4 papers to write, including a 10 page paper. Every Sunday he assigns a test that takes at least an hour... even when cheating. He gave them every Sunday even if there was a paper due. Such a sweet man just wouldn't take the class because of how much work
I took this class fall semester of my freshman year. hes not clear on what to write about in your homework assignments or even on 10 page essays. he writes a sentence and thats literally it. I almost never got a break because he would always assign work every week. the essays were non stop. dont take him!!
The professor holds very interesting lectures and is overall good at making us learn but this class had 2 hour tests every week and sometimes 7-10 page essays due the same day. Was a lot of work but professor was very nice.
Professor Madison is a nice guy. This class was an online ASYNC, and all work is online submitted on blackboard. Since this was an 8 week course, the work load was a lot. You will need to read from the textbook in order to be successful. You have to write two papers per chapter every week. There was three five page essays in total
Dr. Madison is such a nice man. As long as you talk to him and are honest with him, he is willing to extend due dates. Definitely need to be on top of the readings though, because they are crucial to the homework and exams. He is a tough grader, but he also is very transparent as to what he wants and gives you the exam questions ahead of time.
Professor Madison's HIS 111 course is very writing and reading intensive, though it is not a W-course. He is a very nice and understanding person, but make sure that you do not miss any reading or assignments, or you will fall behind. I recommend taking his course if you are interested in history and have a passion for writing
Dr. Madison is a fantastic person who clearly is very passionate about his profession. He is quite knowledgeable and great to talk with, but often times his lectures are monotone and boring. He puts effort into his lectures, but they are often barebones. He isn't very clear about projects/due dates, but all in all he is a great guy.
Julian Madison was an okay professor he gives tests online once every other week and they are opened note and can take them 2 times. He makes you buy books you never read. His lectures can be very boring at sometimes and will call on you randomly so be ready to answer his questions that he may have for you. He gives pop quizzes so be aware!!!
HIS 111 course is very writing and reading intensive, though it is not a W-course. He is a very nice and understanding person, but make sure that you do not miss any reading or assignments, or you will fall behind. He does give out a research paper which has to be 10-12 pages long
