he makes me want to be a better man.
Enthusiastic, exhuberant, brilliant, great at teaching, and even sexy!
this man is brilliant, articulate, and attractive!

Enthusiastic, intelligent, genuine. Fresh ideas for WCU. Also attractive...
Great teacher! Always willing to answer questions. Grades fairly.
Haha...Onderdonkey!
This class was pretty easy. The teacher makes an outline that pretty much tells you exactly what the tests require of you.
Very easy class, interseting if you like art--- everything is spelled out for you-- it's harder to fail this glass than it is to get an A
Enthusiastic, EASY. Jonderdonk...Jonderdonk...J-J-J-Jonderdonk!!!!
really enjoys his work...a little spacey...but great anyway
He's passionate, but that's about it. He lacks clarity and is unresponsive when he is wrong about something (which happens often).
Just like watching TV: easy, sensationalist, and no room for thinking. Memorize the misleading, ill-founded key terms and you won't even need to listen to the music to finish the worksheets! Pleasant, but only as a function of classroom management.
kinda weird, but makes himself available for the students and material is presented clearly. I have absolutely no musical experience and am doing pretty well in the class.
He's is very passionate about what he does, and that is what makes him a good teacher.
onderdonk loves what he does- u can tell! hes funny and the class is somewhat easy. clarity isn't great but he always is in his office for help.

Very passionate and an exellent teacher. He is like alittle harder high school teacher. Must study for the tests though-kinda tough
Not a good teacher, it's that simple. He is an unfair grader and a mean person. I will never take another one of his classes again, nor will i recommend him to anyone.
Professor Onderdonk is my favorite professor this semester. He is very knowing of the subject and shares it well with his students. I would advise anyone looking to fulfill their art requirement to take MHL121 with Dr. Onderdonk.
very weird. teaches with much entusiasm and explains material with great detail. there is alot of material that he covers in each class though and tests are pretty hard.
he is an interesting teacher, who loves what he does. tests are fair, for the most part. if he asks a question he is only looking for what is in his head. he doesnt like when students have opinions
Great Teacher!! He is very passionate and yes everything somehow turns into sex(someone ain't gettin none). He knows his stuff and will teach you everything you'd want to know and more. STUDY HARD for his tests they are killers.
do not take this class. he's a nice guy but the test are tricky and class is boring
Who are these people taking? the tests are very easy. STUDY!!! I know thats not the cool thing to do at WCU, but do it. Onderdonk is awesome. He has made me love music in a way that no other teacher has. he loves talking about sex, but dont we all&
great teacher. knows and loves what he does. he has motivated me so much. i wish i could take him again.
incredible

incredible. anyone who does not like this guy needs to get a clue
TAKE HIM IF U CAN. one of the best, if not the best, teacher i've had since coming to college. Makes things VERY clear and you LEARN and don't even always fall asleep!! take him!
This guy is by far the coolest teacher I've had so far in my tenure here. For a 9am class he had TONS of energy and is SO passionate about his craft.Oh, and wait until he asks you to bring some of your own music in. He's so open to whatever you bring in.
This guy is great. I hated music history until I had this professor. He makes the material very interesting and is passionate about it. Tests aren't too hard as long as you study. You're missing out if you don't take this guy.
So passionate about music history (esp. MH3) Very clear in what he wanted us to know, gave great notes, very fair grading. Do the work & u'll be fine. If u have a problem w/something, he's very understanding. I'd recommend him to ANYONE. U'll end up loving music history even if u hated before.
Truly impressed with his teaching skills and knowledge of the subject. If you don't understand something he'll take the time to make sure you understand. The class was very productive. I learned lots. Take it from somebody who has classroom anxiety, he made me feel very comfortable with going to class
Great teacher!!! Very energetic, and enthusiastic. Loved going to class, and learned a lot from him. Although our musical tastes differed, he was always open to my opinions.

I love him! Great teacher great class even if you don't like classical music or older music. He tries to incorporate modern music w/what is learned. Great great great teacher, take it if you can!!
He is one of the coolest professors I've ever had. Sometimes I don't know if he's crazy or just head over heels for music. You will end up LOVING his class no matter how interested or unintersted in music you are. He is so funny, energetic, and helpful. TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES!
He is such a nice guy, always willing to help you whenever you need. Loves if you participate, very passionate about what he's teaching! Even if you have no idea what you are doing, the class is fun!
He is soo crazy but the best professor ever! He's always there if you need help and explains things really well. Hes really passionate about his job and you can tell!
He is an awesome professor! The best ever! He's so into his job and it makes the class awesome! He's such a nice guy too! TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Onderdonk is the man. He gives quizes/exams online so you can sit with your notes. He writes everything on the board so if you take good notes and go to class its an easy A. Only semi-difficult thing is the listening exams, but if you study you'll be fine. I defintitely recommend him. He's a nut and its hilarious. Great guy.
Dr. Onderdonk is the man. He is very nice, approachable, and a sharp shooter willing to answer any question that comes his way. Not only is he crazy but it's great having class with him. The quiz's and tests are from the notes. No surprises there. Take him!
he's a good teacher and all but I'm seriouly thinking that he goes on here and writes stuff about himself! lol All the entries sound the same and act like this man is god. he's nice and easy but not godly!
Very willing to help his students- seems to really care about job- very passionate- can be a little crazy- but keeps it interesting. Doesn't like when students leave early- especially for work related reasons- can be tempermental, but overall great music teacher. Listening exams are difficult but plenty of other assignmnts balance it out.
i dont want to jinx myself cuz i took onderdonk again this semester and i dont want this class to end up sucking, but hes been one of my favorite professors. hes a real cool dude. you have to take little online quizzes every so often but, its not so bad.
i've take onderdonk twice now. its shame i cant take him again.
Difficult guy to follow. His listening tests are easy as his online quizzes. Problem is that his teaching leaves the class in confusion.
He seems like a nice guy, but I find his class boring, and he ALWAYS goes over class time. This class isn't for music majors and I know nothing about music and I honestly had no idea what was going on most of the time. He acts like this is the most important class you have, I don't reccommend it, maybe he's better @ a lower level class.
One of the best professors Ive had yet. Keeps class extremely interesting and made me crack up a few times. A lot of work for an art class though but you will get a pretty good grade if you do all the work.
This guy is the man. I was put into his class for a gen ed and was happy I got him. He realized the class wasn't full of music majors so he taught accordingly. It's an easy class as long as you put a small effort towards it. He even put all his powerpoints on D2L if you miss the class. Definitely reccomend him for music if your not a music major
DUDE IS THE MAN. BEST CLASS EVER. GUY DEFINITELY PULLS TRIM ON THE REG.
funny guy and he takes his job pretty seriously. he freaked out a couple of times about people not paying attention. but if you show up, pay attention, and do the work it's a really enjoyable and fairly easy class even for someone with no musical background.
This guy is all over the place but keeps class entertaining for the most part! You don't need any musical experience to get a good grade and he also drops a lot of your lowest worksheets and quizzes. I would definitely recommend.
OK guy. I dont understand why people say its easy. He expects you to be able to listen to music and do well on these worksheets which is nearly impossible towards the end. But if you apply yourself and work hard you can get a B. If you dont try at all thats the only way you can fail.
The funniest professor I've Ever had!!! He is hysterical. I didn't have a music background before taking this class which was a huge disadvantage.. He does teach you the things but you need to be able to identify them in rock songs he plays which i found to be difficult. The exams are pretty rough and theres a paper. D2L quizzes online too.
He is funny but you have to apply yourself. This class isn't a breeze. He expects you to work to get the grade. That being said, he is a very funny guy. Sometimes I think his humor is annoying but he is very passionate about what he does and it definitely comes across in class.
Absolutely loved his class, took the 121 class because I got assigned to it randomly and I liked it so much I took his rock course in the spring. Both classes were really interesting and he expects you to put effort into them, however he's an extremely helpful professor and a really funny gun. Would definitely take him again if I could.
Some of the listening tests are difficult, but for the rest, just attend class and take notes and you should be fine. Cool teacher, if you appreciate blues or rock music...
He was so cool and his class was fairly easy. Just pay attention in class, skim the readings and listen to the assigned tracks and you should be good. He has a great sense of humor and doesn't shy away from the nitty gritty stuff.
Onderdonk is great. Comes across a bit...strange at the beginning but he loves his music and is really knowledgable. There are some things I felt he skipped over for less important things but that's just me. It's a really fun class. If you love music like me, the listening tests are easy. Chances are you'll know most of the songs anyway.
Best teacher I've had in all of college. He expects a lot out of his students and his tests cover a lot of information but he is the most active, funny, organized, and helpful teacher I've ever had. I am taking 2 of his class next semester just because I enjoy him so much. Highly recommended!
I took this class for an elective. The textbook he pulls material from for tests and quizzes. He's a good guy and the class can be fun, but it has too much music theory and I don't know that stuff. The papers we had to write were crazy hard.
Just an incredible man and professor. Best professor I have ever taken a class under. He is so thoughtful in his approach, and truly cares for his students in and out of class
Dr. Onderdonk was one of the most helpful professors I've ever had. He was always willing to work with students on new concepts and gave plenty of extra time in office hours and review sessions. The tests were hard but definitely fair and his study guides cover everything that might be on the test. I would definitely suggest this teacher.
Dr. Onderdonk's classes are by NO means easy. There is a lot of work and he expects a lot from each student. However, he is so willing to help after classduring office hours, and he is so passionate about his subject that it makes it easy to pay attentionbe interested. Lectures are NOT boring. Amazing teacher!
Onderdonk is actually an amazing all-around human being. He's sooooo nice and great at making music history classes not the most boring classes you'll ever take. Which is not easy.
Amazing man but very difficult class.
Difficulty is just a matter of the subject of the course, to no fault of his own. He's awesome though, and should probably be on Broadway for how much life he can give to really awful, boring material like early music and the renaissance. Completely recommend.
Wonderful personality, excitability that belongs on Broadway. I humorously, mildly regret sitting in front row because of sound sensitivity problems and he's actually pretty loud, but it keeps you awake. Very understanding but adheres to grading rules tightly. Also, I learned how to read a textbook this semester. Take lots of notes in class folks.
Great professor; very thorough explanations of the topics with hilarious play-acting for effect.
The Donk is the man. Perspectives in Jazz is a great, easy 3 cred course, probably the most interesting history course you'll ever take (besides History of Rock, which he also teaches), so not just cultural context but eases you into really understanding how to hear part of music. He brings passionate energy that history courses desperately need.
I heard a load of great things about him but, taking his class as an arts requirement was NOT worth it. Like yeah it's a level 300 class but not all of us in the class is a music major, even a music minor. Great guy though but don't take his 325 if you want that arts requirement. Take MTC 110 instead.
While I specifically picked one class, I had the pleasure of having Onderdonk for 2 major music history classes and his history of rock (a big recommend). He's funny, insightful, and makes you care about the subject matter. The listening tests are tough, as are the written tests, but he will make the experience an enjoyable one.
Best professor at WCU. His enthusiasm makes the material very interesting, and the difficulty of the course forces you to know music history thoroughly. Go to his office hours for each application assignment and any ideas you're unfamiliar with before each exam. He works as hard as he expects you to work. You will get the grade that you work for.
DO NOT HIM IF YOU ARE NOT A MUSIC OR ARTS MAJOR!! I'm genuinely interested in music but his class is based in music theory and is way too serious for an elective. I had more tests and quizzes than my other courses. His test are hard and even if you study and go to office hours you won't get an A. I didn't listen when I was warned about this class
This was my hardest class this semester. Professor Onderdonk is very passionate about teaching jazz, but he gave too many assignments to do. His online lectures were longer than our 50min class time. His tests are very hard even if you study.
This is a class that should be easy and fun but this professor makes it unbearable. He demands your attention at all times and he also takes it upon himself to make this class as hard as possible and has even suggested the class get tutors...for a music elective. He sounds like a radio host lol I would never recommend taking him
This class is definitely not for everyone; it’s incredibly difficult, but worthwhile if you have the desire to learn. He’s a very charismatic teacher, but requires that you stay off your phones, which isn’t that hard of an ask if you actually care about the material and have general respect for teachers. Very fun and engaging class all around
This was hands down the hardest class I have ever taken, do not take this class. It was not what I expected at all. It was extremely test heavy, we have quizzes every week where we have to memorize 30 songs a week. The exams are so hard, im worried i wont pass class, I liked my teacher but the work was extremely hard.
