tough tests, alot of work, but a good class
Tough course, but prof Tyson really tried to get everyone involved in studying
Tyson is exited about teaching and getting students involved, not too tough if youve had high school chemistry, and a nice guy
Worst class ever (took it Fall 02'), he doesn't teach anything, the only way to learn is to teach yourself and do owls.
Well organized course and the chance to get a grade based on what you know at the end of the semester is a really great feature of this course.
He does not go over things you need to know for labs, which is hard if you are not taking the lab, and you should study owls because he doesn't clearly go over them in class.
cant understand what hes tryingto teach us. not enough class time i think. awesome accent.
Not very clear in certain situations but very helpful and has a good teaching style. Would rather have you learn the material than do badly in class. Ideas like makeup marathon help students who had bad exams or troble with material.
Hard class, but he is a great teacher...i love his lectures, and he really wants you to do good. But you need to go to lectures because they are really helpfull for the tests.
He's ok...A lot of work I guess...but he does mean well and he wants you to do good. I think he has trouble understanding why people do bad as if he thinks its the easiest class in the world but you do end up teaching yourself most of it, so if you were blessed with a scientific brain you'll be fine
good professor...likes the subject...awesome British accent
Fairly hard class. In class lectures were not good enough to help you get a good grade. You need a lot of outside study and work.
This is one of the most moronic professors I have had. Not only does he ask questions and give the wrong answer, but he explains things in a way where you just laugh at him.
The beginning of the class was good but towards the end he would be doing problems on the board (getting the wrong ans. btw) and mumbling to himself about how to do it. Lectures don't help.. you end up teaching yourself. Try to take it with Botch or anyone else.
nice guy,but a bad teacher. Use the the practice exams that he gives you online because the tests are just like it, just different numbers and equations. To get answers to the practice exam go to supplemental instuction. If not for SI and the practice exams i would have failed.
An easily passed class if you do, and try to understand, your OWLS and practice exams. He's not always very clear, but is extremely helpful if asked for extensions on work or clarifications on specific subjects. VERY approachable professor who means well.
lecture is useless, accent is entertaining though. my brain hates chem, but i passed by doing all the owls and doing the practice exams. buckle down and study those practice exams as they are the only reason i passed. my TA was horrible and i knew more than her (and that's just sad).
You need to work on the stuff outside of class to do well. Exams are not multiple choice so pay attention to the practice exams. Keep up with OWL. Who knew chemistry could be this interesting? It's good to have research active profs teaching at this level. The arsenic project was cool, too.
very dedicated to helping students learn
Good professor with clear cut testing. Practice exams are very helpful and if you study them well you can do very well in the course. Good professor and helpful.
The practice tests are identical to the real exams. They go over all the answers before too. Owls help a lot. Make-up marathon is offered at the end where you can retake any test(s) you want!!:)
Great course, lots of interaction, a chance to do some research, get teaching experience and learn a lot of analytical chemistry

interested in helping student learn
Teaches the junior year writing class with his wife (an English prof at Smith). Great class, you really learn a lot. They both give very good feedback.
If you need to take chem, he's the best at it! I absolutely love him! He's EXTREMELY NICE. I would take all my chem classes with him if I could! He's AWESOME!!!!!
He's a nice man but your not being graded on personality.. Exams are hard but his assignment amount ie owl is reasonable
Thought this was going to be an easy gen ed for non science people. Said on the syllabus 70% of people get As. Easy to get an A if you do all the extra credit he offers. However, awful teacher, jumps around from what makes up an atom to mass spectrometry with no linear pattern. No one had any clue what was going on.
class is definitley hard. He grades on a total point system and if you do the owls and weekly arsenic papers you can easily get a b-. also he gave an extra credit at the end of semester which was 300 extra total point to your final grade as long as you did the extra credit. It's hard but he is helpful at the end of semester
Professor Tyson clearly has a passion for what he teaches, but he tends to be very pompous. The class offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, but his teaching style is very inconsistent and you end up not understanding much. Not an easy gen ed because of all the owl, quizzes, papers, and other various assignments he assigns over the week.
Julian Tyson didn't seem to understand how to run a Gen Ed course in chemistry, not for science majors. Subject material was all over the place, pointless, boring, and oftentimes beyond the grasp of non-science majors. His delivery showed that he wasn't very dedicated to the course. This was not a good Gen Ed class. Take it only if Jeremy teaches.
Probably the worst class I ever could have taken for a gened. He gives an insane amount of work. This class was supposed to be my break from all my other classes for my major, but instead I find myself constantly working on assignments for it MORE than my other classes. Basically, avoid chem 101 with Tyson.
Worst gen ed I've ever taken. Way too much work and Tyson is extremely arrogant. Do not take this class!!
A generally unpleasant class. Material is way beyond the content expected in a basic chem class, workload is ridiculous for a gen ed (weekly quizzes, papers, extensive homework, and a flood of assignments at the end of the semester). Tyson is boring and is completely unequipped to teach people who do not already know the material. Please avoid
Boring class only about arsenic. Hard tests and all over the place throughout. Nearly impossible to understand and pay attention to lectures.
This class has a ridiculous amount of work for a gen ed. There are quizzes, assignments, papers each week. He assigns a bunch of "busy work" assignments at the end of the semesters. The class focuses on arsenic, and is impossible unless you are already very familiar with chemistry. He is scatterbrained in lecture, & not good at explaining things.
Professor Tyson is an accomplished research scientist. He is not an accomplished teacher. The workload vastly exceeds what should be expected in a 101 gen. ed course. Tyson assumes your knowledge of MUCH chemistry material, and assumes you have a disproportionate amount of time to dedicate to his class. DO NOT TAKE FOR GEN ED CREDIT. OR AT ALL.
Professor Tyson brought Analytical Chemistry to life with a thorough introduction to the methods used for the characterization of materials. He has an engaging way of presenting a lecture or leading a discussion, and has a wry sense of humor that may have been missed by most of the students in class.
He can't even explain unit conversions the first week of class so you're basically on your own for the rest of the semester. Go to class for clicker questions but don't let him confuse you, just do the owl work and you'll be fine.
Tyson is the only lecture professor I've had who will wander into the audience asking people if they need help or understand the material. He takes extra time to help out after class, too. His lectures are kind of boring, but the class is fairly easy, if you do the OWL work and extra credit.
I'm probably fairly biased bc I hate chem so I honestly didn't try my best. Anyway, he's okay. Nothing really special. The exam averages tend to be fairly low (60s), but they're all pyramid exams (5050) so you have a chance to raise it. iClicker stuff too. Owls are just annoying. You'll get through it.
Lectures makes you sleep. Better go to his class if you want to sleep. Sometimes struggles with explaining the material. However, this class made me think about switching to 122, because I guess I didn't learn anything.
He's a great old British guy who gives organized and well thought out lecturespower points. He's a great guy who truly wants everyone to pass! Take his class!
So, here's the deal. I think he is a wonderfully awesome person. However, me being a person with OCD, his powerpoints drove me insane because they didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense. I learned more from the book as a result of this.
Julian is personable and very nice but his lectures are not very helpful, you basically learn everything from the book and homework. He also uses the iClicker system for questions. His tests are done in a pyramid fashion online. If you go to the SI sessions and study you should do fine.
Probably the best Chem 111 professor. His pyramid examines are so easy, and he does a thorough review of previous material at the beginning of every lecture. Yes, he is old and a bit slow, but this class is an easy A if you do your homework and study a little. He also gives opportunities for extra credit, which is a super helpful.
Tyson is pretty much an awesome British grandpa. His practice exams are basically the same thing as the actual exams, so you know what's going to be on the real exam when it comes around. OWL homework is a lot but it helps understand the material.
Tyson is great! Did not pay much attention in class but OWL book basically taught me everything I needed to know. His practice exams are basically identical to the actual exams. If you don't understand whats on the practice exam you won't do well. Iclicker mandatory and he opens OWLS up at the end of the semester for full credit.
His lectures can be confusing and going to class won't help you much to understand the material. But he helps the students a LOT with the grades, like reseting the OWLs, posting practice exams that are almost the same as the real ones and giving "pyramid" exams that help VERY much with the grades. Just go to class, do the OWLs and practice exams.
Not extremely clear in lectures, but the class is easy to pass. There is a 5050 pyramid for tests and he allows a double sided cheat sheet. Makes it hard not to pass. Great sense of humor.
Gives 5050 pyramid exams & extra credit. You get cheat sheets for every test & your labsowlsiclickers make up a good portion of your grade, so even if you do poorly on the tests you're fine. He reopens all the owls at the end of the semester. Def try to get him, you will pass with flying colors.
I love tyson. This dude offers pyramids and a bunch of extra credit. Theres even a pyramid for the final. He assigns a lot of homework but if you do 90% of it you get full credit. Great guy and strives to see students get good grades. He honestly does care about your grade
Just do the online homework and it will be easy.
Tyson is the man. This year in chem 11 he made the class significantly easier than all the other sections. Don't be fooled the content isn't easy but it's hard to stress when the exams are 5050 pyramid exams and you get a cheat sheet on the in class portion of it. If you go to class and do the owls you should get at least a b.
Professor Tyson leaves no room for why you shouldn't get an A-A in his class. His exams (even the final) had an option to be taken again for the final score to be averaged out; you could get an 80 on your final and end up with a 90. There a ton of OWL assignments, and you only need to complete 90% of them to get a 100% in hw. You learn on owl.
I took AP Chem in high school and I found this class so much more easier. There are a lot of assignments online to do, but that is the only downside. He is a very clear lecturer and is open to questions. He's a really nice guy. His tests are computer generated, all multiple choice.
Lots of moodle work, you learn pretty much everything there. Class is for clicker participation.
Professor Tyson is a good teacher, and is very interested in what he does. He is one of the leading researchers of arsenic in the US, so his examples using arsenic are very clear and detailed. He does iClicker attendance, which sucks if you miss a class, but there is a lot of extra credit opportunities. Tests tend to have lots of Q's about readings
Just a terrific interesting class. Learn the basics of chemistry by focusing on the dangers of arsenic in our water and food supply. One of the hardest classes i have take yet one of the most rewarding and interesting. Professor Tyson is awesome. He is THE expert on arsenic, cares about the material and his students understanding of the subject.
Great guy. Super knowledgeable, and a US leader in his respective field of chemistry. Loves what he does, and has great examples of a lot of his teachings that come directly from his extensive research with Arsenic. If I needed more chemistry classes, he'd be my guy, 100%.
If you have to take chem, take it with JT. Does everything possible to make sure you pass. Practice exams, iclickers, and lots of OWL HW. Have to put in the work to understand all the material, but hard to fail if you try a little. Best/easiest chem professor.
Tyson is a great teacher. You learn mostly from the OWL homework each week, but his exams are exactly the practice exams given. Class is not difficult, but attendance is super mandatory. He's fun, and he's a really great teacher.
One of the best chem professors i've had. he is really good at giving many opportunities to succeed. he seems to actually care if students are learning and if he sees you have fallen behind on hw he might email you to tell you to get back on track. He is one of the easiest/ best chem teacher for 111. there is a lot of HW but it does help.
There are a lot of OWL homework, but its totally worth doing! you learn both from his class and from the owl homework. Also do the practice exams for the exams, because the exam is basically the same thing. tyson is an awesome guy and he just wants you to pass the class! Best chem professor out there!
Don't fear Chem 111, Tyson is the easiest and best professor ever. Exams are given as pyramid style. OWL homework, make sure to do it. Learned a lot. Lectures are clear. IClicker participation is counted so attendance is mandatory. Iclicker is about 10% of your grade so it's basically an easy A added to your grade. Easy professor, easy course.
This class is an easy A, especially if you have taken Chemistry in high school. It was easier than AP Chem because the test are all Multiple Choice questions. He also gives Practice Versions before every test that are mandator that you must complete twice. Then when you take the actual test, the questions are very similar. Lots of OWL hw.
Wonderful and cares about your success. It's up to you to go to him and catch up if you all behind.
You have to attend lectures to get iclicker points. Tyson offers you a lot of extra credit opportunities, pyramid styled exams, and classwork/homework counts more than the exams. Would recommend for a PS Gen Ed.
Tyson is a good guy. His lectures have iClicker attendance and there are biweekly moodle quizzes. Six 500 word papers throughout the semester and his exams are exactly like the practice exams he posts on moodle. Pretty straightforward class
Took this as a gened requirement, there is a significant workload, but it is very easy and there are endless extra credit opportunities. 3 exams, with practice exams beforehand that are almost identical to the exam, and makeup opportunities. He gives you plenty of chances to pass in late work and the deadlines are rarely actually kept. iclicker tho
If you've ever taken chem before this class is a breeze. The OWLs suck and take forever, so make sure you stay on top of them. The only reason I didn't so better in this class is because OWLs are worth 20% of your final grade.
Between the pyramid exams and cheat sheets for every exam, including the final, it's almost impossible not to get an A in Tyson's class. You have to actually try to do bad.
There is so much work for this class it's unreal. I had to write fifteen papers for this class... it's a science course. I highly advise that you don't take this class unless you want to waste your time writing papers I don't even think he reads.
He's a little dry, but he's very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about. He assigns a lot of OWLs, but he also gives pyramid exams and allows a cheat sheet. There are lots of opportunities to do well in this class. He also posts a practice exam which is VERY similar to the actual.
There is so much work in this class for a gen ed. Weekly quizess, weekly papers, 3 tests, and various final papers. That being said he offers lots of extra credit. Also he uses a pyramid style test where half of the test is online at home. Be prepared to work but it is not hard to get a good grade if you do the work.
There is no teaching in this class, just an infinite amount of work. I usually love my classes, but this one is the worst one I have ever taken.
This class was labeled for non-science majors yet he expected us to know all of the math and rarely told us what meth he used in any of the example problems. There is an excessive amount of work with little to no engagement on any of it. Left this class exhausted, overworked, and put down. 0/10 I fully regret taking this class.
One of the most irritating classes I've ever endured. Zero explanation for the most important concepts in the course, unreceptive or passive aggressive when you reach out for help, no other resources, at least twelve papers over the course of six weeks and overall unless you understand chemistry already, you're behind.
TERRIBLE! The type of teacher that refuses to give students full credit for their work just because. Content is easy, but he gives way too much work for a 100 level course (10+ papers ONTOP of many other assignments). Offers extra credit like he is EXPECTING his students to need to complete it. He assumes that his class is the only one youre taking
He sucks, absolutely sucks. I don't think I have ever despised a teacher more. Just save yourself some headaches and dont take his class.
