This guy is HORRIBLE!! I'm a junior and I have senior level classes that aren't as involved as his 100 level class. He uses 3 textbooks and goes too fast to take notes and when you don't take them he yells at you. If you have a choice to take someone else do it, no matter what! Oh and Extra Credit is a 6-8 page paper!

This teacher is a nice guy, but definitely makes an easy class not easy. If you like a challenge, I'd recommend him because he's a great guy. (funny) But, if you don't like a challenge I would recommend trying someone else.
Read the book basically all he did in my class was talk about the election for about 25 minutes then when he was done i feel asleep
WORST TEACHER OF MY LIFE. He expects that EVERYONE is interested in what he is teaching when in fact this is a gen. ed. class and a Majority of the class has no interest in it. He expects you to read every chapter! Each tests has 4chapters, 50pages each and his tests questions are extremely random and you never know what to study. DO NOT TAKE!!
He was a hard teacher! I would suggest not even going to class, becuase rarely anyone did and the material is impossible to sit through for 50 mins. I would suggest reading the slides he puts online, and reading every chapter of the book is 100% necassary to get a good grade. Save yourself, and don't take the class.
Julian is kind of weird, but really hilarious. You can't take him too seriously cuz he is a little bit of an odd ball. But honestly, he was a good teacher, I learned a lot about politics from him and all the information he presents is very practical. I appreciate his humor and sincerity. The tests are decent and he gives a huge curve :)
This class is ridiculous. He expects way too much unnecessary information and takes all of his quizzes straight out of the textbook. Whenever someone is sleeping or texting, he will PUBLICLY HUMILIATE you. There is even someone walking around making sure you don't. I just do not understand how doing this will teach you a lesson. DO NOT TAKE IT!
The quizzes are very difficult and then right after that you have to take a group quiz. i recommend doing all of the extra credit because that will almost instantly raise a letter grade or two
This professor is getting bad ratings that i dont think are justified. Yes, the class is EXTREMELY boring, but show up and attendence is 10 percent of ur grade. They take attendence with clickers, so cant go one day? give ur clicker to someone else, EASY! the tests are just on the terms from the book, only 25 questions! and SO MUCH extra credit!!
there is no way to make the content of this course palatable unless you like statistics. If you show up everyday and take good notes then you will at the least get a B. Make sure to follow instructions to the T on all assignments and you will get an A on all of your work.
DROP THIS CLASS!! He was by far one of the worst teacher's ive ever had. tests are ridiculous and I actualy studied. He makes you stay until the last second of class even if he has nothing further to lecture on. His "ex cred" is a five page essay on an abraham lincoln seminar you need to attend.
If you read the book like a novel, know all the vocab, and take the practice tests online, you might end up with a B in the class. His extra credit is ridiculously hard and time consuming. Come to class and try to pay attention. It helps.
When you go to class, do the online quizes, and know the vocab..you will do well in the class. i didnt read the text once and I managed to easily get a B in the class. The final is also pretty easy. Got 100% on it and only studyed the day of. Sitting through class is the worst part because it is soo boring
as long as you show up for class, getting an A or a B shouldn't be hard. The professor was nice and the class wasn't totally boring.
This class is easy if you read the text book. There is a website with all the questions he asks on the quiz, the website is in the textbook. Know the vocab and understand the concepts and readings. I got a 110 percent in the class if that says anything at all. Easy class.
If you read the book, take notes, and attend the lectures you will be fine. My high school politics class was harder than this. He is a good teacher with a vast amount of knowledge and even has a good amount of humor. Uses clickers so show up or give yours to someone you know is going to class.
When I see other POL 106 students complain that this class is too hard, I seriously question my generation. This teacher is great, he's funny in a goofy way. His tests are cake, as long as you know anything about our government your fine. If you fail this class, it's because your the bottom of the gene pool and won't last in college anyway.
Class was ridiculously too hard for a 100-level class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! You have been warned.
Polisci stats class. Not easy topic, but he works hard to help. Go to class, get help in office hours, he will spend lots of time helping you if you make an effort. Nice guy. Funny
One of the best professors I've had. College should be designed to be challenging not a cake walk, and he's hilarious! He's always willing to work w students who truly want to do well. I missed the first test because I overslept and he cut me a sweet deal.... It required a lot of work on my part but it was worth it.
worst teacher ofmy life.worst class of my life.dont take it unless you want a **** teacher who rambles.
Funny, interested, helpful. Doesn't like slackers or people who text or read in class, but if you put in a little effort he's great. If you don't want to learn, don't go to class. Super helpful- I never had as much help in office hours as he gave explaining some things. I'm not super into politics, but now i'm paying attention to the news!
He's a very boring teacher. If you don't know anything about politics prior to class then your screwed. He uses terminology that only political science majors would understand. He doesn't really talk much about what will be on the tests and quizzes he gives. Overall, I wouldn't ever take him again he just isn't very helpful
wow. it's a poli sci class, the terms are in the text, on the slides, explained in class. he talks about how to prepare for quizzes before each quiz -- says use slides as a guide to study text. if you go to class, read the book, take notes, and study some you'll do fine. if you expect no poli sci terms in a poli sci class and don't show up, well...
not funny, not considerate of class requests, often calls people out for texting and surfing the web in lecture hall sized classes (100+ people) and takes it personally. gave no direction or indication of what type of things would be important to know for his 3 quizzes-what your whole grade is based off of
Really helps explain if you go see him. In POL140 quizzes were 45% of grade -- before in class he tells to study slides, key terms. Extra credit offered, if you go to class and try you do well -- it's not hard. If you text, skip class, and don't study, you won't. Your lazy rude act is not professor's fault.
This was my hardest class. He is cvery boring, but very helpful in office hours, and really likes to argue his opinion against others in class. Tests are decent if you have the clicker questions and read the book to know all terms.
VERY BORING!!!! If you have no interest in politics do not take his class he will make you dislike it. Endless lectures that are not helpful towards the test at all. His test are strictly about the book and the clicker questions which take up about 15mins of a hr and 15min lecture. Gives no study guides
I loved this class! Made me interested in what goes on in the rest of the world, and how it is all connected. Prof was funny, really into the material, and really helpful. Quizzes a mix of book and lecture. Class lectures made book reading more clear. Talked about how to study, (read, take notes, review slides), helped a lot. Great class, prof.
By far one of the most unbearable experiences of my life. He does not present the information in a way that allows for any understanding of the material. He is extremely unhelpful and a lot of independent studying is required that does not contribute to the overall body of knowledge. Impossible and useless. Awful professor.
Really good class. Really interesting discussions. Good lectures. Tests good if you read and paid attention. Prof funny, willing to accept other views than his. Made me think, understand, want to get involved. Don't take if you are lazy and do nothing, DO take him if you want to learn, have a good time, and know more about politics.
Goofy. Says a lot of odd things. Good for not saying bias and open to your ideas. Pretty positive and not that difficult to pay attention. He can get off topic and then rush some of the really important information. Online tests available and they are the best ever. He takes some questions directly from online. He really makes you learn material
He was very witty and said a lot of funny things. However, he likes people to attend so if too many people dont he starts to make inclass quizes. its a pretty easy class and he is helpful if you ever need it.
I don't understand how he has good ratings. I fell asleep in class every day. He is a tool. He sits there and rambles about the "rules of the game". The only nice thing is that i only went to class on test days and turned in my weekly review and got a B. A lot of people struggle, but it honestly isn't hard.
ewwww.... wouldnt recommend this class
Go to class, and read the book. Dont text in class. Don't take the class if you don't have to, its way too much work for a low level class.
I like this class. Good prof who really seems to care about students doing well. I wonder a lot about students who say they sleep in class and then call the prof a tool. Pretty crazy and rude. Also, if you want to do no work at all, why go to college? Westerhout does expect you to work some, but not too hard, and will help a LOT if you ask and try!
Westerhout is a great professor. I can see how some people do not like him though. He makes the course pretty easy to pass though. He hands out extra points all semester. His TA's are usually strict, but if you pay attention during class they will not bother you. You will write a two page paper every week. The test questions are all online.
Class is boring is is hard. Wouldnt take this class with westerhout.
Interesting class. Professor knows a lot, and does a lot to help students understand connections. Gives a lot of help for those who are trying. Doesn't like lazy slackers. I don't mind a little work and am learning lots about the world and why it effects me. One of the better intro classes I've had here, not a time waster like some. Good class.
Would not recommend this class if its an elective.
He is a great professor who really cares about his students and connects with them through his own stories and IR examples. Lots of little papers but if you do them and pay attention its an easy A and you learn A LOT, really worth it
Don't take this if it's an elective. He is very knowledgeable, however he is extremely boring. Expects you to remember everything that came out of his mouth which is alot considering he rambles on the entire 50 minutes. If you like a challenge and can put up with boring professors then this is your guy.
Class interesting, professor good, knows a lot, tells some good stories. Slides posted before class, lots of help on exams, lots of extra credit. Wants students to know stuff, do well, worked hard to help me understand stuff, really available. Nice guy,
This guy knows his stuff. Go to class and take his notes, read all the readings, and you should do okay. He offers a lot of extra credit, too. DONT text in class or do anything other than listen to him talk though, he is a psycho if he catches you!
Good teacher, really knows what he's talking about. He can be kinda boring, but interesting and funny at times. The class is somewhat easy, he gives out a lot of extra credit. Reading the book is mandatory.
95% of exam is off the slides. SKIP THE BOOK. Easy B for barely any effort. Gives extra credit and attendance extra credit when attendance got low.
Easy class, but the two page chapter reflections per week get annoying. Tests come straight from the slides and online website. You don't need to go to class and he gives a lot of EC. Class is easily passable
Westerhout knows his stuff. Very intelligent man. Weekly chapter reflections get boring, but easy and raise your grade as long as you just do them. Participation is a grade so bring your clickers. He can be funny when he rants about elections and what not. All the slides are put online, the tests come straight from them.
The constant self-aggrandizement/justification becomes intolerable after a few weeks.
This class is dull but he tries to make it fun, I give him that much. He is extremely knowledgeable, huge respect for him. He offers a bunch of extra credit, chapter reflections are very easy to do but a bit annoying b/c its every week. Slides are always online, this class can be easy or hard, depends on you.
This class is very boring but passable. Tests come straight from the slides, which are put online. The weekly reflections get old really quickly, but he offers a decent amount of extra credit so take advantage of it!
Overall, he is not a horrible professor. He is definitely passionate about his subject, but his class gets boring really fast. He gives lots of EC, which makes up for the quizzes being kind of difficult. He rambles a lot too. But go to class because he gives clicker points, pay attention, study, and a B is easy to get.
He gets the message across crystal clear and always tries to make it interesting to listen to. He doesn't always succeed at the latter. His class is easy to pass: all the test questions come directly from the slides, available online. Hint: in the weekly reflection, spit his words back at him! Don't reflect, regurgitate!
He's really not a bad guy. His lectures are boring but most people just go for the clicker points. Weekly reflections are not hard at all you just repeat what he said in class and you'll be fine. He did give alot of EC though which was nice. His tests are not hard they all come right from his class pp's which he puts on reggie net. Easy B
This class was ok, not super good but not super bad either! I suggest taking this class for an easy B (do all the article reflections, you will most likely get an easy A, i didn't but still got a B) He is not a bad professor always tries to get people to talk and be involved! Exams are not bad and the final project/simulation is actually fun! TAKE!
He's a nice guy, and his class structure is pretty simple to follow. 7/10 stars- would recommend. Just do the chapter reflections in lieu of studying and you should be fine.
Julian is a very intelligent man, but for a 100 level course the procedures he took for teaching the material was too complicated and difficult to comprehend. Attend class and attempt to understand the material, clicker points are participation. Do the extra assignments, it'll help you in the end as there are 2 quizzes and final
Julian is a decent professor. He can be a bit dry at times and for a 75mn class felt at times a bit too long, however class is relatively easy, do article reflections and you should do well. I ended with a B, study for the 2 quizes and final and you should end up doing well.
I don't think I learned anything from this class. He is very smart and passionate about the subject but I couldn't follow anything he was saying. I went to class every single day and was still confused when it came to quiz time. You can do bad on the quizzes and still get a good grade in the class. Class was easy to BS but I didn't understand him.
Class is definitely passable, gives a lot of extra credit. rambles a lot, confusing and the quizzes are kinda difficult. kinda rude and annoying but is passionate about his class. MUST go to class, clicker questions are participation points. two quizzes and a final, group projects and a lot of class debates
Go to class because clicker points are crucial attendance points. I learned nothing really and was confused since day one but just studying from study blue helped... Advise you to do ALL extra credit ... can honestly say I did not learn anything but subject wasn't my thing don't get me wrong he's a great person very passionate.
Easy. Show up, click in random answers, and do reflections. I came a total of ten times and got a b. If you don't feel like going, make your friend take your clicker. Over a hundred points of extra credit offered.
Rambles on and on. Not easy to follow at all. I would never take another class with him again. The only reason I passed was all the extra credit he gives. If your looking to actually learn something, this class is not for you.
Get the book for reflections, test are written but pretty easy. The more input you have the better your participation grades and I think all your other grades. Look at slides for test but write down things that aren't on the slides helps in your answers on the test.
You must go to class and bring your clicker. Also be sure to do the reflections. If you do the work its pretty easy. LOts of extra credit. He can sometimes be hard to follow but if you do the readings and reflections you should do fine. If you don't understand politics it is extra important to pay attention.
Very good teacher. Bit of a dork but that is how he keeps his class interested. As long as you take notes and do what you're asked you should expect at least a B.
One of my least favorite professors ever. I hated his class and learned nothing. The class debates are absolutely dysfunctional. Quizzes are pretty difficult but the rest of the class is easy.
Such a boooooring class. It's hard not to zone out. Four in class debates, one is extra credit (100 points), also gives out other ec opportunities. I study straight from the slides and get As on the exams (he calls them quizzes). Just know ALL the information on them. Even what's in the articles. Not bad if you put in a little effort.
SUCH. A. WASTE. OF. TIME. I learned nothing from this class. The lectures were boring and confusing. The tests were difficult and he was not very helpful when it came to reviewing for the tests. He's obviously passionate about this subject, good guy, HORRIBLE teacher. If possible, find another teacher
Dr. W's curriculum consists of 3 exams (aka "quizzes") and 5 debates (with 1 being optional). For the debates, you are required to write a 2-page paper & 1-page reflection for each. Attendance is mandatory, as you are required to answer clicker questions every class period. If you do all 5 debates & look over the slides, it's an easy A.
Attendance is not mandatory, but a good idea because 10% of the grade is participation in clicker questions. Nothing too extreme, just the debates will require attention the entire semester. Don't worry about the "quizes" (tests)or final because I didn't get above a D and still got an A in the class.
This class in boring. He rambles on and on about random stuff that I don't even feel like it has to do with the slide that he is on. There are some times I don't go to class because the power points are online. He does give a lot of extra credit opportunities out. The tests are hard to study for due to the amount of material in them. Wouldn't rec.
He uses words that are not used in our everyday words, so you may not understand what he is saying. He does not give out study guides or tell you what will be on the quizzes he gives. you have to read the power points and the book to try to understand the material.
You get out what you put in. Professor Westerhout is a very quirky guy, he rarely gets off topic but when he does - you're bound to laugh. I was able to get a decent grade without using the book, I might have done better with it. Have some respect, and put away your phone - he'll call you out in front of 200+ people if he sees you using it.
Westerhout is a pretty cool guy. His lectures can be boring sometimes but you learn a lot. I didn't get higher than a C on any of the tests and i still got an A in the class because of all of the other opportunities for points in the class. Only used the textbook to clarify some things in lecture, but it is really not necessary.
Honestly one of the toughest professors I've had. He is not understanding when it comes to making up assignments (even if you are excused by the Deans' Office). A LOT of debates at the worst times... Just a very tough class overall. Do not recommend.
Lectures are brutal, slides are paragraphs and uses big words nobody has ever heard of. I missed 14 of the classes and didn't take notes once. Got an A in the class. Tests are impossible and not even worth studying for. Easy paper grader. Do good on the 2 page papers and reflections. and do all extra credit. Honestly, take 106 or 140 instead.
His slides tend to be very wordy. He responds to emails very quickly. His lectures are sometimes boring but he usually finds some way to make them entertaining. In terms of easiness, you're probalby a POL major if you're taking this and if you have a good background knowledge of politics, you should find it really easy.
Very easy A. Pay attention and do all the assignments he gives you, he also gives lots of extra credit. Not challenging, you just have to do it. Always go to class and make sure you have a clicker! Be a helpful group member. Confusing lecturer but the way the class is set up, tests dont have that much of an impact. I also never touched the book.
Horrible professor. Way too much work for a 101 gen-ed class. Debates, papers, tests (he calls them quizzes)
Make sure you bring your clicker to class, thats how he takes attendance. Tests are long and hard, not really worth studying for. Easyish paper grader, won't give you feedback or a reason for your grade though. I wouldnt take it if you have another choice but I didn't want to take him and I'm doing fine, You'll get by
The exams are really long and has material that he didn't even mention in lectures. But as long as you do your all your online assignments which that are mini essays you should get a decent grade in the class.
It's not a bad class if you're interested in politics. Debates are somewhat simple because you get to work in teams. Tests can be tough because he gives no study guides even for the final. One good thing is you take group quizzes, so that can help your grade. Lectures are just him talking through slides. He does post the slides so that's helpful.
When I did go to lecture it was easy to zone out since what he talks about literally has no impact on how you do on the "quiz." (They are 40 questions, I call that a test.) Attend every debate. Papers are easy A's. He changed the final to cumulative last minute & pissed everyone off. (Over 300 slides to study). Offers extra credit. Superboringclass
Extremely intelligent, sometimes to the point of going over the heads of his students. Lecture can be a bit dry, but he makes International Relations as fun as it possibly can be. Tests are multiple choice, but challenging. Great class overall.
Don't take this class unless you have to. It's a doable A, but it's extremely confusing unless you know a lot about Politics. Lectures and ppts were boring and confusing, and the debates were horrible because my group couldn't care less. You don't use the book at all. Just review the slides and memorize them, similar phrasing used for the quizzes.
His lectures were pretty boring, he gave you assigned seats at the beginning of the year. You had to be there for clicker questions and his tests were kind of pointless, overall, if you try harder than I did, you could do well.
he does count if youre there or not and it will go against your grade if you dont show up. he loves group discussion, if you dont like to talk and participate in class he will get frustrated for the lack of participation and it will also go against your grade. he is very passionate about peace studies and overall i love this class. you read a lot!
Peace studies- loved the class, super interesting but u have to do the readings/reflections & go to class! participation matters. You can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching, and he is super understanding and nice if you talk to him and show you are really trying! He gets frustrated if there isn't a good class discussion lol so speak up
Really good teacher! Even though you have to learn quite a lot a very good class.
Westerhout gives unclear directions for weekly reflections that are on 2-3 articles and then grades you poorly for not fulfilling the criteria he never explained. He also thinks he is really funny when he is not at all and is usually the only one laughing at his jokes so it's awkward.
Julian is a pretty cool dude. He's fun in class and makes lecture interesting. There's 2 exams and you have to do 10 reflections through out the semester. Show up, pay attention, participate, do the readings and you'll be fine. The class goes over Gandhi, Einstein, disarmament, peace and women, the UN, social movements, and much more.
Good instructor. We went through each U.S. President. Make sure you do 9 out 13 reading reflections (2 to 3 pages), and write your 7-10 page term paper. You also have to participate, and he gives extra credit. You have 2 Quizzes and 1 Final Exam. Recommended. Also he does pretty good voice impressions.
Talks like you should already know what he is talking about. Very hard and I am a political science major. Wouldn't take him again. Tests are extremely hard because they aren't just question they are 100% application questions.
Overall great professor, he's funny but can be a bit weird at time. Really has a tendency to repeat things/beat them into your head. Get ready to write a lot though.
He's actually a very good teacher. Very well informed and knowledgeable. However, the format of the class is terrible. Debates are a mess. Not much to help you study for tests which are easy though. I think he curves them because I remember missing too many questions to get such high grades. I recommend the class, but it is a bit disorganized.
This guy is the man. Had him for POL 101 and IDS 111, both were relatively easy. There is reading you have to do for 111, but the book can be skimmed and you don't have to pay much attention to the reading as long as you pay attention in class. He is super involved in class and makes it not too rough. Would take another class with him if I could!
Westerhout knows his stuff, but he is not good at teaching it. I only took his class because it was a GenEd, but I would not recommend taking it unless you are interested in the history of politics and government. His lectures are confusing and he jumps around too much. I participated in 2 quizzes, 2 group quizzes, 2 debates, and 1 group paper.
The class that put you to sleep. He non stop talks and teaches the lecture with very hard vocabularies. Didn't understand anything that came out of his mouth. He thinks we understands everything he is saying and moves on with the class slides very fast and because of that it is hard to take notes. Debates and the clicker grade matters a lot.
Super cool human being, not so great class. The subject matter is boring but he does make an effort to engage his students. Don't bother buying the book. Show up to class. STUDY FOR YOUR INDIVIDUAL QUIZES. (He has a weird grading system & if you do poorly on your quizzes it will show on your grade.)
Dr. Westerhout's knows his stuff however he does a poor job teaching it. He often jumps around in lecture and gets off topic. He assumes that you get the information and quickly moves on. I honestly had no idea what was going on majority of the time. he provides a lot of extra credit so MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ALL HIS EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITES!
TONS of virtue signaling, extremely leftist/cultural marxist, does not hesitate to show politically motivated bias in the classroom. If you don't have extreme liberal views, this professor is not for you.
His lectures don't make sense, he bounces around and expects you to know everything before going to class. If you don't understand the vocabulary he is using then you won't understand the class.
He's terrible. His lectures don't make sense and his tests are all over the places. Avoid at all costs. Tutoring helps a lot but can't make up for the fact that his lectures literally make no sense. He spends 70% of the time telling personal stories or telling us how we should be vegetarians. Seriously don't take him!!
Prof. Westerhout knows what he is talking about, just does not know how to teach it. The team quizzes and individual quizzes are difficult.
He's awful, don't take.
Do NOT take his Pol 101 class. It is very difficult to follow and the debates at the end of the semester he does not elaborate very well. The paper you have to write is also very confusing and hard to understand. I highly recommend choosing someone else to be your professor.
Pol 101, grading wise it was great as long as you had a good group for team quizzes which are a big portion of your grade. The individual tests were rough and the professor did an awful job at explaining the end of term debate and paper. I ended up joining a tutoring group to help with this class because lectures got really off topic sometimes.
Westerhout set up POL 101 to be super easy and hes not a tough grader at all. I never read the book and the class was an easy A. You take a quiz every week but they are group quizzes. You get an assigned group for the whole semester and that makes it easy to get a good grade. Theres two tests and they are exactly like the quizzes.
Really liked Prof Westerhout. Don't worry about low scores on the exams, the final at the end will help. Pay attention in class.
He has a really messed up sense of humor but makes some what boring material better he knows so much about world events and is a fun guy
Hes very choosy about who he likes in class and who he Doesnt.. and well lets just say you better hope youre one he likes
The tests are worded in a way that makes you really have to understand politics just to understand what he is asking. A lot of your grade will be team tests if you are taking him for Pol which means that if your team won't listen to you and don't know what they are doing then you will not do well. I wouldn't take him again
Julian is great. He's tough, but he really cares about his students. If you are having a tough time with him, go to him and tell him that. He really wants his students to do well, even beyond the classroom. I've found he's a great friend in addition to being a great teacher. Don't let 101 fool you. That class is far different than the rest.
EXTREMELY BORING.
Boring lectures, goes through the powerpoints too quickly & puts a ton of unnecessary information on powerpoints that aren't on the tests (He calls them quizzes). Tests are hard even if you study for them. He's a very smart guy but expects everyone else to comprehend what he's saying even when the material is really confusing.
The team quizzes are basically whatever is on the PowerPoint slides, so take notes on those. Hes a nice guy and he knows what hes talking about but I found the material difficult to comprehend for a gen ed class. Theres no study guides, he just tells you to read the book, look over powerpoints and study with your team
Julian is a great professor, its not his fault the material is incredibly boring. If you take POL 101, DO NOT SKIP. I did and it is the reason I am likely failing. He gives group quizzes but does not say when they are. As long as you show up and pay attention sometimes, you should pass with at least a C.
DO NOT TAKE AT ALL.
The guy is interesting and knows his stuff. Look over the powerpoints every day, participate in class to get one extra credit point per day, and you'll do just fine. If you get stuck with bad people for the group project, just don't put their names on the paper. He's really nice and both him and his TA's are available if you're confused.
Was a nice man, respectful, but teaching style isn't the most effective. Attendance is required through clicker questions and random team quizzes . The team quizzes can make or break your grade depending on your team. You cant choose your team and they greatly influence your grade
Go to class for participation points, extra credit for answering a question or giving a comment. Team quizzes were alright, good grade boost if your team knows what they're doing. End of term simulation wasn't exactly the most clear, but relatively easy A for that portion. Study for tests with lecture notes. Very lecture-heavy.
African Politics was a very difficult class for me. The first test is over all the lectures up until the test, STUDY YOUR EXTENSIVE NOTES, because you need to be there every class. I personally found the book confusing and never read it, he does ask about it though. You need to really study for this class but overall i enjoyed it as time went on
He was a good teacher. He knows everything. The class is just very boring. You sit there while he lectures and you better read the book beforehand or you wont know whats going on.
He is a very unclear professor. He does a very bad job at explaining what he wants in his assignments and the tests are very hard. Some of the information was interesting but for a 100 level class it was way too demanding.
He's honestly such a nice man this course is just very hard. It's very lecture heavy, and the quizzes are very confusing. You do group quizzes in this course, but most of the time he doesn't tell you when you have them. DO NOT SKIP THIS CLASS it will not help you in the future with quizzes.
This guy has no idea what he's talking about. Nothing in class is related to the material on the tests, and he goes off about random stuff all the time. Extra credit opportunities for 1 point a day but participation is hard when you don't know what's going on. He's a nice guy but a horrible teacher.
Just go to class and say anything to get extra credit I failed all test but my extra credit boosted my grade tremendously!
Puts up slides on zoom during lecture time, but does not provide the slides to you for your use until after lecture. Makes it hard to take good notes and he goes through the slides pretty quickly. Intro class but if you don't know much about politics before this class, you are going to be lost very quickly. Quizzes are very difficult. No tests.
What he says in class is completely irrelevant. It goes against the syllabus and the tests. The textbook is not useful - I wasted my time reading it. The only thing useful is his slides, but he doesnt post it until hours after the lecture, and zooms through them in class. He is not clear with grading, refuses to clarify, & grades really harsh.
I had him for online class because of Covid and all. He was extremely boring on Zoom and often rambled off topic in his lectures. His syllabus is misleading in terms of participation, and he was less than nice to me when I told him I had been mislead by his own instructions. I recommend finding another professor for this class
Large portion of grade dependent on forum posts which was not explained in class or in the syllabus. Majority of class time is rambling about subjects not on quizzes or on the final. At the start of semester professor said microphone was not required for class however to receive full participation grade you will have to talk during in class debates
People are way too harsh on this professor!! Honestly, it is not him that is difficult, it's the material that is hard. He actually is very respectable and fun to have as a professor. There were two extra credit opportunities that boosted my grade a lot.
I would strongly recommend NOT taking this class with this professor. His content that he talks about in lectures is not relevant at all to the quizzes and exams. Dont even bother wasting money on the textbook either. There is no clear instruction as to what he wants as far as participation, and grades far too harshly. Find another Pol 101 prof.
Julian doesn't grade a lot and is not specific about what he wants from you. He put in the syllabus to do this but gave me a D for doing what was advised. His quizzes and tests are extremely unfair and have questions about graphs and demographics that are super-specific and irrelevant to memorize. He will let you know his political opinions also.
He's a nice person but his lectures are very fast paced and he doesn't provide the slides to students until hours if not days after they are presented. When in class he doesn't talk about what is on the quizzes and talks about random bs instead. Also there are no tests and barely any homework but the quizzes are very very difficult.
He's a nice guy, but he's a tough professor. Forums are a huge part of your grade, as well as the polls taken in class so if you do not show up you won't pass. Four quizzes, 200 points each. The questions on the test are hard to understand and could have multiple answers: EX: The Cold War is..., or China..... That was the entire question.
I took his POL 101 class spring semester 2021 (online). Honestly, if you do attend class and do well on the exams you will do well. However, His grading system was handled poorly. He made the students calculate their class grades themselves. He also is not very sympathetic w/ students about work. Honestly wouldn't take a class with him again.
It was hard to know what you got in this class because he never put the grades in. He was a nice man and the lectures were interesting but the tests were really hard. There were discussion posts every week and they were confusing sometimes and again they were never graded.
This class is the hardest class I've ever taken. He spends about a minute on each slide and doesn't post them on reggienet for a couple of days. He is not clear on what will be on tests and goes off on long rants about things not relating to politics. Your whole grade is based on individual quizes and team quizes.
Julian shows slides during class packed w too much information to gather at once, & seemingly talks abt anything but whats on the slides or in textbook. He also isnt kind to struggling students. He reminds you how many times you have accessed the reggienet materials according to his statistics & makes u calculate ur own grade. Avoid this prof!
He packs way too much information into his presentation slides, making it very difficult to follow along and take notes. He constantly shows grades and resource access to show how many students are not doing their best. He spends a lot of the lecture talking about random things, that trail off topic from the presentation.
He's a nice person but he teaches the class way too fast. He goes from one subject to the next not really and then drops random team quizzes on the class. The team quizzes are rough because he goes way to fast. The individual quizzes are easier because you have time to study. Only problem is he gives no study guide so you dont know anything on quiz
His quizzes don't correlate with lecture, I wouldn't recommend taking pol 101 with him. if you don't get the material he doesn't care. You have to be there or you will miss a quiz potentially.
He uses the term "quizzes" for insanely hard exam. Does not prepare you what so ever for the exam and looks at "reggienet" activity to explain why you aren't doing well in the class. The study guides do not help, the lectures do not help, overall HE DOES not care if you do well or not. Don't count on him to answer your emails either AWFUL professor
Horrible lecturer, goes on long tangents whole time. Doesn't put your grade in until the end of the semester. Doesn't answer emails or calls.
This guy is definitely my worst teacher/professor Ive ever had due to simple fact that we don't learn anything and there are no study guides. The tests are brutal too.
Mr. Westerhout is a terrible teacher. he doesnt give homework, no study guide , just reads off the lecture slides and give quizzes! He is unorganized.. barely explain the slides ! Lastly doesnt have tutoring for this class ! 3/10 recommendations for this class.
Super nice guy, very funny and incredibly knowledgeable. Homework was 3 questions for each chapter every week, so not too bad. 2 Exams, 1 final, and one term paper. Exams were pretty tough and are free response plus essay questions. Requires participation in class. All in all, he's a great guy but he expects quite a bit and grades tough.
prof. is a nice guy, but I did not like his class at all. If you hate lectures don't take this, you'll find it hard to pay attention. He offers EC for participation and there's no hw, but there's team quizzes and a team project. Sucks if ur team sucks. Content can be hard and confusing, and final is cumulative. Not the worst but wouldn't retake.
This is the most difficult class I have ever taken. He gives random team quizzes without notice so you have to be in class. He gives short study guides that are irrelevant to everything on the tests. He does not care if you do well in his class and for a 101 class it is extremely difficult. He also gives his own political opinion.
Technically, class isn't mandatory, but the random team quizzes make you go. I never listened once in this class. I rewrote his notes and studied on my own. If I really put the effort in I could've gotten an A, but it really wasn't worth it. All the other professors for POL101 are much easier. Also, DONT BUY THE BOOK. Avoid this professor.
I had him for the peace studies class. He is a tough teacher, but eager to help if you are struggling. You will HAVE to do the readings and definitely study for the tests. I don't know why he has such bad reviews; he is very nice and I could tell he is passionate about teaching.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. My middle school teacher could teach better. He is a joke and spends most of the class ranting about off topic thing. The class have no mandatory attendance but he makes it mandatory by giving out random quizzes that affect the grade heavily. He has said a few very inappropriate things that are offensive.
He just teaches off slides that he doesn't go over much, instead talks about unrelated material. Attendance is not mandatory but he gives random group quizzes, which is not good if half your team doesn't show up. There is no homework, but they are discussion posts, that are graded. Would not recommend his classes
Professor Westerhout: - Available - Lectures (must take notes and interpret what he says) - 4 random team quizzes (10 points, not too difficult if good group) - 3 hard tests (has questions from the lecture but lots of application questions) - EC for raising hand - 1 group project/paper, not too difficult Never taking him again - aggressive
The tests have nothing to do with the lecture, you need to read the book to have an understanding of what's going on in class. I was literally confused the entire time while in this class.
He's a really great professor if you're actually trying to learn what he's teaching. If you're taking the class as a gen ed and only want an easy A, go somewhere else. It's not exactly mandatory to go to class, but it'll end up affecting your participation grade and overall how you understand the material if you don't show up.
I am only a freshman but this is one of the worst professors/teachers I have ever had. THE WORST. Very heavy on lectures and his material makes little to no sense. At some point he will put you in groups and then once in a while you will have pop group quizzes. Exams don't reflect his lectures. Only grades come from group quizzes and exams.
Julian tries to make it interesting but International Relations is seriously the most boring class ever. Hated showing up.
don't take his class.
Makes you write discussion posts and when you do all of them he still gives you a terrible grade. He gives team quizzes, but usually half of them team is never in class. He also doesn't give enough time to write notes in class and the questions on the exams don't always match with the notes, making you have to guess the answer.
This guy is so funny. I loved coming to his class every day because he makes everyone laugh and brightens my day! The tests were pretty easy you just have to take notes and know the material :)
This class makes me physically ill. He constantly loses track of his thoughts, and he calls people out in inappropriate ways (not like a phone thing, like a mean/derogatory way) I think I'll suck up the incomplete credit so I don't have to take 18+ hours out of my week for this
There weren't a lot of grades in this class, but it was all easy. group quizzes, group papers, and other pieces of work but it was all very easy. Show up to class, the book is 50/50, it's helpful but also not necessarily required. Off-topic at times but a respectable professor and materials was pretty easy if you have background knowledge
Highly recommend the course and the professor!
Lectures are very engaging and interesting. The material is not super challenging, but there is a lot of reading, especially for the weekly homework assignments. He is very nice and funny during class, I would definitely take him again.
You can bullshit this class but it isn't the easiest thing. They don't really read the discussion post a lot, but I will say that doing double the amount there is for the week will get you an A. I suggest writing your own post and then replying to one. You will have to study yourself if you don't have a good team. Participate for extra credit!!!!
One of the most committed and insightful professors. Cares about his work and that you actually learn something; flexible if you get on his good side, so make sure you do your work and are on top of assignments. One of the most awesome and well-prepared lecturers, definitely makes me glad I finally get the worth out of my tuition dollars.
Very engaging teacher with a lot of work. Easy class if you read your textbook and submit every single assignment
He has no compassion for his students. Will try and physically take your belongings until the end of class. Does not teach anything, just tells us to read the book and the lectures are just notes from the discussion posts MADE BY STUDENTS! Loves to publically embarrass students and make students uncomfortable.
I found this class so painfully boring. Takes attendance and you have to participate kind of a lot to do well. Have to do 10-15 service hours outside of class and write a paper. Tests are short answer and essay questions. Discussion questions are due every week so you do have to buy & read the book. tbh I don't even know what's gonna be on tests.
You have 6 tests throughout the semester - 3 planned individual quizzes online, 3 pop quizzes that are group quizzes. Gives extra credit for participating in class. Really funny and a story teller. If I was a poli-sci major, I would look for his classes to take. I hate politics and he made the class interesting for me. Final was online.
Very confusing in the lectures. Lectures and notes did not help with tests or quizzes. There are pop quizzes and if you miss class you will get a zero. Did not accommodate at all if you needed to miss class for your job or another good reason.
He isn't a bad teacher, he just tends to go off topic quite a bit and ramble about other subjects. He also has individual quizzes and team quizzes and some of these questions are about things we never really went over in class. The discussion posts are confusing because I could answer how I usually do each week and get a different grade every time.
He wasn't an awful professor I just personally didn't like him. He gives team pop quizzes so you always have to show up. The individual quizzes weren't too bad but I felt like none of the stuff was in the notes. If you could take another professor do it, but if not he isn't that bad.
Attendance was not mandatory, but there would be group pop quizzes, so you'd get a zero if you missed one. The grading wasn't too bad because he'd drop your worst team and individual quiz grades but the tests were tough.
Passionate professor who clearly cares about the subject manner and tries to communicate in a fun and engaging manner. Sometimes these efforts are effective, sometimes they are not. Often he will ramble on about subjects totally unrelated to the course, but these moments can be a good mental break from otherwise long and information-dense lectures.
These lectures are so hard to understand, he is constantly off topic and usually doesn't ever get back on track. the slides have almost nothing to do with the lecture. When you take the test you will constantly be asking yourself "did we learn this?". it's easy to get credit on the discussion posts, but the tests are very difficult to study for.
The lectures can be a bit disjointed, but the tests are manageable with good notes and engagement. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing alongside the textbook. Overall, an interesting class if you put in the effort.
This has been the worst experience with a teacher and professor I have ever had. His lectures are pointless, all he does is read off slides, and on the slides themselves he puts questions, never an answer. He gets sidetracked so much, he doesn't help with studying at all, and his way of teaching makes the class so confusing and frustrating.
I've taken multiple politics classes with other teachers for "harder" class and had to take POL 100 just to waste my time. Attendance and participation required just for the lectures to be scattered and sidetracked. Lectures don't Aline with the test. He will call you out for not paying attention. Doesn't give excused absence even went sick.
Do not take this class unless you have to or try to get anyone else. His class is way more difficult than it should be for a level 100 class. Lectures were pointless to the tests. He gives team quizzes so you have to show up to class because he doesn't tell you when they are. None of his lectures help the tests so make sure you do the readings.
The tests are essay and short answer, and that was hard for me because I did not remember anything I read from the book. Reading and studying the reading is important to do well in the class. The lectures were boring. I did not do well in this class and I think I should have dropped out of the class.
Professor Westerhout is a very well-versed and down to earth person. When you apply yourself you will succeed, he is very open to office hours, email communication, and other forms of help, you just have to ask or otherwise he assumes his students understand the material as any other professor would. His lectures are interactive and he is funny.
Professor Westerhout breaks down things really well, be present for the lectures, the information he says is more important than what is on the slides, he also now offers participation points to help boost grades. He isn't boring, he connects back to real life, tells stories, doesn't just read from the slides, it is interactive and interesting.
I really enjoyed having Julian as a professor. If you read the chapters and have a short summary of each one, you will be fine. Most of the topics covered are connected and it is easy to build off what you learned. I studied a few days before each test and got As. Don't let his rating scare you!! He's really kind and an understanding professor.
- Lectures heavy but gets side tracked A LOT - Helpful when it comes to making up quiz/ test - Slides heavily rely on student responses, aren't very helpful for studying for exams - Asked how I could prepare myself for the final, his advice "write down everything you remember" - Does not provide any study tools except his slides and online textbook
I took this class imply because I had genuine interest in it and can confidently say I'm glad I did and that I got him as the professor. He has genuine passion for what he teaches and keeps you engaged in class. If you just want to quietly pass by and dislike classes that rely on student engagement, then this is not the one for you.
POL 140 was by far my least favorite class I took in the department, but Julian was not the reason why. Reading some of these reviews leads me to believe he has changed for the better post-covid. Class was graded by exams with multiple choice and short response; both are easy. Genuinely great professor limited by a not-so-great class.
I enjoyed his class and found his lectures interesting, but they did go off on tangents. Occasional group pop quizzes.
Show up to class or fail. It's a lecture every day, with long off topic tangents, if not a pop quiz. He doesn't believe in study guides, so take all the notes you can because the slides don't help with the exams. You HAVE to read the readings to understand what's going on in the class because otherwise you won't know what's on the exams.
He is nice, but you need to focus in class and try to take notes. The slides don't help with the exam; lectures go off on tangents. He doesn't do study guides, and doesn't bother asking him what to do better, he just says, Try and remember everything you can. Just good luck overall, if you end up taking him, just know I'm praying for you.
This professor means well but his class is very difficult for a level 100 course, if you do not go to the lectures you have a possibility of missing a pop quiz or will have no idea what is going on. His lectures are less about information and why it is relevant but more about his personal opinions/experiences. 2 discussion posts every week.
A Great Professor who makes lectures somewhat tolerable; however, the class material is boring unless you're into politics or have to take this class, pick another Gen ed.
