My favorite college class. Information gained has been useful throughout school as well as life. Would take class again in an instant. Very nice woman, very clear, and very happy to teach her subject.
If you take this class, ANT 160, Youl read 3 short books about different african tribes, write 2 papers. There are 3 tests which she tells you everything that you need to know on a study guide. Tests are easy as long as you read the books wich i found enjoyable actually. Easy A Interesting material.
likes to talk TOO much and will go on and on (even during the tests)...it's an easy class though!
Dr. McDonald is a very easy going person. This class is very easy!! The required text is pretty interesting except the 3rd book. The discussion group is necessary to attend and if you need a GPA booster this class is for you. EASY A!!!!
She's a decent teacher. The only bad thing is her test questions are worded different and confuse you. But overall an easy B if you read the books and go to class.
Very easy, tests were mainly multiple choice and usually was very close to the study guide.
Dont take the class with the TA sesion on friday at 8 in the morning, I took this class cuz people on here said it was easy, but I got a C. Yes the tests and material are easy, but class is boring as hell, crowded, and thus hard to attend. Also if your friday class is at 8 in the morning, and you cant get up eraly, dont bother taking this class.
Intro to ANT...good class. Tests are mult choice and follow outline. A few movies and some interesting lectures about her travels. Definitely recomend!
Easy class, but boring material. She is a nice woman and she lays the material out for you nicely. Just follow her study guides and you will be alright. She is fair and the lab grade will boost your final grade. I recommend it for an easy A or B.
First class I ever fell asleep in. Some of the videos are boring, as well as the lectures. However, I did enjoy the reading. Discussion was incredibly boring but you have to go. Tests can be tricky... study pretty good. I probably got an A. DO THE READING!!!!
BORING class with outdated materials. Opinionated lecuturer. EASY class. Makes unsupported arguments. Friend got grade changed through discussion. Unfortunatley boring as I'll get out. Does not challenge students. Avoids sensitive topics.
this LECTURER cannot teach. material is not boring but is presented in a boring manner
awful. do not take.
awful...boring..outdated
Took this as elective. McDonald sometimes makes me sleepy but knows her stuff, has done research, helps you if you need it and enjoys discussion in class. Lecture not slide-based, gives list of terms for each chapter, some short-answer on test, 8-10page research paper or project at end of semester. Few assignments if any otherwise. Nice teacher.
Horrendously easy. Too easy. This should not be worth college credit, but I guess it's an alright intro-level class for freshmen. Lectures are an awful combination of student apathy, babying on her part, and ridiculously low expectations. Tests are multiple choice--an elementary schooler could get A's on them.
Very easy course if you keep up with material. Textbooks are semi-interesting and class consists of powerpoints and videos. Okay as a prof- can be a bit crazy, but overall okay and helpful. Easy A if you keep up!
horrible horrible professor but super easy. she just rambles about morocco andd keeneland a lot... you will want to blow your brains, but it is an easy A, so..
She is a great teacher, VERY easy A if you dont mind going to class and reading. I really liked her attitude, take her!
Nice teacher, reads right from the powerpoint, class is pretty easy.
Very entusiastic and has first hand knowledge of much of the material. Easy A if you go to class and recitation.
Really nice and approchable. It's an easy class, kind of boring. You read 3 books that are all pretty easy. I learned some interesting things in there, and never had to worry about my grade so that was nice.
Great attitude and understanding when it comes to students. Easy to work with and genuinely kind.
This class is an easy A if you just go the the lectures and the discussion sections. Sometimes McDonald is a little boring and there is a lot of busy work, but overall the class is not bad.
Easy A if you attend lectures and labs. Extremely boring. Learned more from TA Allison. READ all novels. Busy work every class. I failed one test and still got a B.
I have no idea why I had some difficulty with this class, I guess I was over-thinking. The wording of her exam questions are kind of vague and it always seems like with the options for answers two could be right or none at all. Drove me nuts. She really is a nice professor and loves what she teaches, I would recommend her.
Okay teacher. She is very into the subject and knows a lot. The class tends to be a little boring, but she helps you out a bit.
I learned a lot from Dr. McDonald. If you go to class and have trouble, she's easily approachable.
I really thought this class was interesting! She is a good teacher and her tests are very fair. Make sure you read the books required for recitation, though. They aren't too bad to read and you'll need the info in them for quizzes and tests. Good choice for a proffessor!
Dr. McDonald is one of the best professors you could ever have. She really knows what she's talking about and makes learning fun, even if the topic is something you wouldn't normally be interested in.
Make sure you have a good recitation teacher. Not a hard class don't have to attend all the lectures if you can get the notes from a friend. Make sure you read the books and stay for the videos and you will get an easy A
Enjoyable classes.
great professor you will learn so much she wants all her students to succeed and will go the extra mile with you to see that you reach the goal you have set, the university desperately needs professors like her, she promotes learning and you will learn
Attendance isn't mandatory, but she wants you to come. Class is pretty interesting, and Dr. McDonald is awesome!
Really good Professor. She is interesting, and really loves her subject. Her tests, however, can be difficult.
Great teacher, pretty interesting classes although I missed quite a few. The tests can be tough so make sure you read the books and do the study questions. The recitation is a total joke but they take attendance so you have to go
Not the best lecturer in the world. I was regularly, painfully bored every time I attended class.
Excellent
This is my third class with her, and I like her more each class I take. Very knowledgable about subject matter. One of the best professors I've had, and definitely my favorite!
Anthropology was really boring to me. She made it sound as if the class was super easy if you read and take notes, but that is not completely true. Her tests are hard.
She is very nice. She really cares about her students...but the class was incredibly boring. She is kind of a crappy lecturer. She uses power points that are ridiculously hard to follow. For an entire topic she'll use 1 word in her powerpoint for it, then going back to study later, your notes have a bunch of random words. It sucks. Tests are HARD!!
Great teacher. The class was interesting. She is very to the point with grading. If you come to class, read, and do the HW you can get an A or a B in the class. Tests are not that difficult expect for about 5 questions that are the difference between an A and a B. She will tell you that. Some questions are even funny.
This was the worst class I have taken so far at the university of Kentucky. One she gave us a test on the Monday we came back from spring break. The class is extremely boring and the books that we have to read for the class are dull. The test weren't too hard but the way she writes questions makes it hard to understand what she is actually asking.
The 10 page paper assigned for this class is absurd and does nothing for helping you understand the material in the class. The TA for this class have an obvious dislike for her teaching style and what she expects of them. Honestly I learned more about the Bali and San people from my TA.
She is SO nice! Her teaching style is different and her notes are vague but they are on the test so you need them. Her tests are multiple choice and EASY if you study your notes and reading questions briefly. You learn more from the TA honestly though and you have to attend every lab. Her papers are weird and annoying to write.
McDonald herself is a wonderful woman. However, I got stuck with the TA from heck. She has no part in the grading, so if you do get a crappy TA- sucks for you because there's no chance for extra credit in this class. The books in this class are mildly interesting. The ten page paper in this class is stupid. I will leave the class learning nothing.
An alright class. Not too much in terms of workload, except for the major 10 page paper. I learned a lot from this class in terms of global problems. McDonald seems very nice, but tends to treat her class like children, which has its ups and downs. I had a great TA, and a lot of my assignments were graded generously. Not a bad class.
10 page paper is 100% useless, helps you learn nothing about the class. Tests could be easy but worded so oddly that it is difficult to understand what is being asked. Requires more work than you would think, definitely not an easy class.
She is wonderful! The class was very interesting. Everything that is in place is to assure the students understand what is being taught. There was a 10-page research paper, but it wasn't very difficult and graded easily. Tests are not difficult at all. She is always willing to help with anything, even if it doesn't involve her class.
Great teacher! she got me more interested in Africa than i ever thought I could be. You can tell she really loves what she does, and it shows through her teaching. read all of the books prescribed they ARE on the tests.
She truly was an awesome teacher, she gets you inspired to make a change in the world. Very helpful, took her online class over the summer and provided very interesting lecture PowerPoints.
She truly was an awesome teacher, she gets you inspired to make a change in the world. Very helpful, took her online class over the summer and provided very interesting lecture PowerPoints.
An absolute waste of my time. Although the class was easy, the grading was done by all TAs, which ended in me receiving a B and all my friends getting As. Class made me want to shoot myself in the foot, anthropology is not a real field of study, please get over yourself
Joke of a class, she cancels class the week Keeneland is in session. Grading is completely done by TAs so you can get lucky and have an incredibly easy grader, or have someone who takes being an Anthropology TA way too seriously.
My favorite teacher on campus! This is the second class I have taken with her. It was a class about religion so at times people disagreed but she always encourged open discussion. She is very approachable outside of class, if you ever have any troubel she is more than willing to help you out. She is awesome!
One of the best grades I've had in college. Partly matters which TA you get, as they grade your paper, quizzes, and hw. 10 pg paper isn't fun, but other than that the class isn't bad. Do most of the reading, stay awake in class and its an easy A. And, McD was interesting, enjoyed the subject matter pretty well.
Really nice professor. Wants to help in any way to make students do well. She likes what she does, unike other professors who seem miserable with their work. She is very busy but still very committed to her job and to her students. Overall great class thanks to her attitude! Everyone should take at least one ANT class in college! I recommend her.
Highly reccomend this teacher! Lectures quick, not mand, and are let out early often. The hardest part of this class is a long paper but she guides you through it so it was not bad at all. Tests were exactly what was on the study guide. Students who took her class before said that her tests were worded weird but I definitely think she changed them
Definitely recommend this professor. She keeps the material short and to the point. She is geniunely interested in seeing all of her students succeed. She seems like the type of teacher that would do anything for her students. Class is fairly easy, even with a 10 page paper. Do the work and an A is definitely attainable.
She is really nice but he class is not an easy A. If you don't want to actually learn about other cultures DO NOT take this course. There is a 10pg paper and exams along with quizzes and homework once a week. The books are a must read, that is what half of the tests are over.
Couldn't stand this class. Her lecture is just her standing up and rambling. She makes no sense, and her tests are worded very weird. Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. The only thing I learned in this class, I learned from my TA. This class is the only B I received this semester.
Lectures were a little boring but you can tell that she has a passion for helping students to succeed. She's very approachable and willing to help you with anything. your grade literally effects how much you did the work. if you take notes, go to recitation, and read the books you'll pass.
Dr. McDonald was awesome! She really does care about her students, especially the ones who show that they care about the class. The lectures can be hard to follow sometimes, though the tests are pretty easy. Reading the books, going to class & recitation is important. There's also a 10 pg paper, turned in in steps, but it was surprisingly tame
She is a little weird, and rambles all of the time (blurts out the most random comments). However, She loves what she does and is very helpful. If you go to lecture, take notes, go to recitation, read the books, and complete all of the assignments then an A is likely. I liked the class overrall and suggest it.
By far my favorite professor at UK so far. She really enjoys what she does and wants you to succeed but you have to put forth some effort. Read what is assigned, come to lecture and discussion, and do the class exercises and you'll make an easy A. Oh yeah, and get started on your research paper well ahead of time like she says to!
The class was pretty boring to me. I could hardly stay awake in there. The prof does tend to digress from the topic at times. It was not really my favorite subject.
I took this class online over the summer. Easy as pie. Finished with an A. She's really nice and approachable. 4 exams. 20 quizzes. 5 mini essays. The class itself was pretty interesting. Take her if you can!
The professor was awesome. Her lectures werent always the most interesting but it was easy to listen to. The recitations/TA's I wasnt to thrilled about. Thats when the work became pointless and hard, and attendance was neccessary.
Treats the class as upper level. material is easy, but the way its formatted, makes it difficult.
Excellent instructor! If you follow the readings and review notes, exams are very easy and straight forward. The research paper is an easy A if you take the time to do each step they give you!
Dr Mcdonald was very nice and willing to help. However, she was never prepared and changed things all the time. Also, her lecture topics were random and her tests were hard to study for bc her lectures were so all over the place. Overall, easy but was annoying when it came to deciding what to study for. The TAs were the most helpful.
DO NOT take this class if you have McDonald. Do not put yourself through the trouble. She rambles in class and it is impossible to listen to her talk because she is so boring. She talks about things that are completely irrelevant to what is on the exams. TA's grade way too hard. Would not recommend this class to anyone.
Wonderful Teacher. Engaging Class. You really have to pay attention and go to lecture but if you do then the tests are a breeze. She is without a doubt passionate and interested in her field and is super helpful if you go talk to her. Really cares about her students.
Overall material is easy. She likes to relate everything back to herself which can be kind of annoying. You have to go to lecture to get notes and discussion is mandatory for hw/quizzes. There is a research paper and she gives study guides for tests so it's easier to study. I didn't dread going though & I would recommend the class
If you aren't into anthropology, don't take this. I have a 3.65 GPA through 2 years and got a B in this class. Was just horrible. Avoid if you can. Not an "Easy A"
Very organized course. Points based system rather than percentage. She's a good instructor but doesn't give our idea of a multiple choice test. You WILL have to work hard for an A
This class is a joke. Exams, you can eliminate 2 of the 4 choices because they're sarcastic answers. Always spouts something about it being a "points" system, where you still have to get 90% of the points and know what percent of your grade each thing is. Also loves to talk about how much she used to drink. I'd summarize my experience as: Whatever.
Watch food inc., a marshal film about dobe and look up the ant wiki page. Boom you've finished ant 160. Minus all the poppycock nonsense. If you believe things like Bob Marley's a prophet, we have no idea what causes aging and taking over the world is as easy as shutting down kroger, then this class is perfect for you and you for it.
She is an awesome professor! I had no idea what anthropology was prior to this class. She makes lectures interesting! You WILL get a bad grade in this class if you do not attend. Tests are easy, with two obviously wrong answers. I am now majoring in anthropology because of this class, Dr. McDonald, and my awesome TA Matt Krebs!
This course depended on a lot of things. First of all, it depends on if you like the subject. Secondly, it depends on if you're willing to go to lecture AND recitation. If you miss either, this course isn't easy. If you go to both, it's a cakewalk.
I did not like this class. The material wasn't bad, but I got tired of the prof's sarcasm, ranting, and treating us like we're dumb. If you want us to act like adults, don't treat us like children. I would not take another class of hers. On a positive note, the exams were really easy and I liked the TA.
She is a passionate prof. who strives 2 do her very best & is approachable+really understanding.Class grading is mostly determined on the TA's & Rec. is mandatory.A 10pg paper, class Exc's and 2 mult. choice exams was the work+ExtraC.Lecture slides r organized & simple 2 write.Study guides provided ahead of time made material easy. Will lrn smthng :)
The Lumbee from Robeson County North Carolina. If the class was entirely based off that first sentence, then she would teach it much better. You have to do a whole lot of reading for this course, and the text book is very expensive. ($80-$90) This class was interesting, but I would have enjoyed something a little less difficult for a UK Core class.
This is a Professor who understands students and sides with them. I struggled through my last semester of school due to a lot of different circumstances. She went the extra 15 miles to make sure I understood the topic instead of just learning it to pass a class, and actually created an interest that will shape my life. She is an AMAZING PROFESSOR
She loves what she does! I had a terrible TA who would never email me back but Dr. McDonald handled it so fast. She really does care about her student. It's a core class so its pretty easy. Just do the work and you'll get an A.
You do have to read 2 books and some other articles. They're not that bad though. Go to class and take notes (they don't have to be in depth, just the general idea). Gives a study guide and it's very clear cut with everything you need to know, you just have to put in some information about it from the notes. Pretty easy class.
Dr. McDonald is a great teacher! She is a pretty easy grader as long as you show up for class and try your best, but she does expect you to read the text and you won't be able to pass if you don't. She really loves what she does and it shows in her lectures.
Dr. McDonald is a great teacher. She tries her hardest to be friendly with her students during lecture. Her power points are to the point and have the material you will need once she gives out the study guide. Going to discussion sections is a must! Participation is everything, most likely if you do the assignments, you will get full credit.
Her lectures can be a little boring, but as long as you read the assigned books and take notes during class, it's a very easy class to pass. Attendance to lecture isn't mandatory, but you'll want to go to avoid last minute cramming before exams.
Dr. McDonald is a very nice professor and will help you out if you go to her. The exams aren't too hard but I probably learned more in recitation than I did in lecture. You really have to pay attention in lecture because she won't post any Echo360 recordings or lecture slides online. She has pop quizzes in the lecture for participation points.
The class is easy if you read and show up, lectures are interestng and information from Dr. McDonald's experience that she ties in really helps add to the topics.
She was very unorganized and took forever to post grades on canvas. She let in too many kids off the wait list because they could not keep the promises she made a lot of the time. With that being said, she loves her subject. I am a fiance major and I took away things from her lecture. Also she lets class out early by at least 20min each lecture.
If you're looking for an easy A, then this class is for you. If you go to lecture and pay some sort of attention, you'll pass. In the recitation for this class, the TA would basically give the answers to the homework, and we got out early every time. Generally an easy class, I would recommend to anyone.
Dr. McDonald was very unorganized. She frequently worked outside the syllabus, and her expectations for the course shifted throughout the semester. While her class was not difficult, it became a major annoyance as the semester went on. I would recommend seeking out another instructor if possible.
This class is definitely an easy A as long as you study for the exams. The exams are very easy but you need to study for them because they are the majority of the grade. It is mostly common sense but if you review for it you will get an A. Professor McDonald is hilarious and very easy to work with.
Dr. Mcdonalds study guides are absolutely useless. They make barely any sense at all it is just a bunch of words piled together. The class is unorganized when you meet in person and the recitation/discussion is pointless as well. also, tests are 600 points between THREE of them. Absolutely ridiculous
This class was a very easy A . Very minimal work outside of class and you only go about once a month . Attend your discussion sections once a week but that's about it . The class is disorganized and in the beginning of the year, I thought I was missing something. I wasn't . If you study a little for the tests and do the RQs you'll pass for sure .
This class was really easy. Make sure you go to class because thats where the most of your grade comes from. You're only required to attend half of the classes though. definitely take this to fill your uk core. McDonald is very caring and understands the struggles of being in college. She is willing to work with you on some things.
this class was an absolute mess but my classes in middle school were probably harder than this class. Super easy, was even easier due to the coronavirus causing our tests to be open book online. Also, if you search the book title on google with "pdf" on the end, there's a free pdf. Only issue is the organization of this class, but you'll get an A
The class wasn’t awful but it’s not set up very well. You’re expected to read the syllabus and be responsible for any due dates, even if they aren’t mentioned. It’s a fine class to fill a requirement but I wouldn’t take it for fun.
This class was fully online and we just zoomed for recitation once a week. There's just weekly reading questions that aren't due until the day of the next exam and a few big assignments that are easy and I got 100's on everything. She's really nice from the few interactions I had with her and it's an easy core class and you learn valuable things.
Both professor McDonald and my TA Stephen Fox, are as good as it gets. It's a straightforward class. Do the work & you'll do great.
Overall very easy class, weekly assignments laid out very well in Canvas and easy to navigate. Weekly in-person discussion section (if you select that) attendance mandatory but I found them to be helpful.
