She knows and explains the material well. Gorgeous 80's hair. Love the clothes.
Professor Allen reminds me of the teachers from Degrassi High. She's nice, helpful, and totally stuck in a time warp.
Her terrific logic lectures were replaced by the most insufferable and nauseating lectures in the philosophy of horrid religion. Awful. Dreaded going to class. Tough, tough, tough.
I sat clueless through out the whole year until I finally dropped it! The T.A's are just as strung out as the prof.
Is it really too much to ask to provide students with notes on-line?? Apparently it is. Although this is university I think she's teaching at a third or fourth year level, rather than a first year. Your in T.O. now!
This course is not for first year students- she's teaching at such an advance level better suited for upper-year students for sure. Avoid her like the plague.
The course is too difficult, and the lecturer alienates students by teaching at an overly advanced level. Too many readings: a 700-page course kit!
Avoid her phil. 1000 course unless you have a lot of background in philosophy, because she teaches at a third-year level. Hard to follow, unfair workload.
Awful class - tons of difficult readings, incomprehensible lectures, and mean-spirited TA's. Philosophy should never be such a nightmare.
She herself is not so bad as the others say. It's just a badly constructed and overly difficult course. I've heard she's quite excellent in the higher level classes she teaches, like Ethics. Besides, she's hot.
She is a confusing lecturer but i thinks its because of the material she teaches. She is very helpful one on one. If you like philosophy but hate readings don't take her class otherwise its okay. Just have to get a good TA.
She did eventually put the course notes online, which was fair. But her lectures lacked focus and context, dragging on without purpose or emphasis, like an endless bland story. Besides, she seems to dislike teaching, which further discouraged me.

I couldn't follow her lectures at all. But in retrospect, I think she would have been terrific if only she geared her material to her audience. Great potential, sadly unfulfilled.
This course may seem difficult at first but becomes easier as it progresses. Units become more interesting and marking becomes more clear and whats expected of you. Overall an interesting course. Review daily from the very first day or you will be lost ;)
Her lectures were boring to say the least, the material was confusing to the point where she did not understand it and could not explain it differently then the text. She should not be teaching.
I think Prof. Allen did an amazing job with this course. Starting with logic was great, since we proceeded to learn more philosophy in a logical manner. NOBODY COMPLAIN ABOUT OVERHEAD NOTES NOT BEING UP LONG ENOUGH, MOST PROFS DONT GIVE THEM.
She was challenging but good. I think the course would have been better had she progressed a bit more slowly and given more context and emphasis for each philosopher and school of thought. By the way (irrelevantly), I loved her hair and clothes.
Allen was great, but the course overall suffered because the TA's couldn't clarify anything: they just made things more confusing by contradicting her and talking about irrelevant issues. I've never seen so many incompetent TAs in one class.
starting with logic was great as it provided a basis for subsequent units. The course was well construct as each unit seamlessly tied into the following unit. Lectures, however, lacked focus sometimes and was not sure what exactly was being discussed.
I thought it was a difficult and challenging course and the lectures were rather boring. The monotonous voice did not help. However, I did find the professor helpful in sorting out course material so the students knew exactly what they were doing
Prof. Allen is certainly very knowledgeable in this subject area and tries to clarify and make sense of the readings, however I still found the lectures to lack focus and very rushed. Nevertheless, the logic lectures were fairly comprehensive.
What I liked about her was that she spoke naturally the way I write essays. Very smart and articulate, went perhaps a bit too fast. Yes, I agree that focus was lacking a bit in lectures.
I enjoyed the course. Although i found some of the materials covered in the lecture to be a bit challenging. She was always helpful and added the lecture with some humor.
Although she's an impressive and knowledgeable speaker, Allen too often ignored her students: her pace was always too rushed, she usually ignored questions and emails, and her standards and guidelines were set in stone. I wish she were more approachable.
I thought it was a big mistake to start with Logic in a first year course. The material covered doesnt go in depth enough cause its a first year intro course. You only get a glimpse of the philosophers not the real works they have done.
hey y'all.i took intro to phil last year as n she's the best prof i got.i swear her teaching is great.she explains really good.its not at all vague like the other profs.she rox!! blv me n the logic part of the course is the best!g'luck jst gotta do
Prof Allen was great. She was fun and helpful. She went through material fairly quickly...but I suppose that's wut university is all about.
what can i say. Proff loves to stand there and confuse the**** out of you. You will find yourself at the end of the lecture with notes that contradict themselves as well as a big question mark writen all over your page.
Prof. Allen was knowledgable about philosophy but she was a tough marker. There was tremendous amount of reading for this course. Her pace during the class lectures is rapid, there is hardly anytime to take any notes. The tests were too long.
I took this course because i thought it would be interesting but i was wrong, The lectures were extremely boring and, the logic tests were extremely difficult, i would not recommend this professor.
J Allen wit the crossover !! GO MAVERICKS !!!!
Good class
This prof is terrible! She puts overheads on and rips them off before you even have a chance to read them. She covers too much material at once. Especially for a first year level course. She is rude and doesn't care about her students.
Not only is she a babe with a great sense of style, she just has this soothing voice that I just crave. Plus, I like the way she teaches. She presents things clearly and reasonably. She really wants her students to do well.cool.
Prof. Allen is fantastic, her classes require some effort - but the reward is worth it. I'd take any course with her.
The course was too broad. I use to love philosophy and still do, but honestly the prof=mono toned voice=I was very disappointed. I had to drop the course because I spent way too much time on understanding allthe theories and concepts. It's very mind boggling.Take it if uknowu have alot of extra time
AMAZING!!! Prof Allen is truly incredible. She makes the classes very interesting. There is a good balance of lecturing and dicussion. She answers questions extremely well. I would strongly recommend her for any 3rd or 4th year course. I'm not sure if she would be good for an intro course.
she has a great way of keeping intreast if you watch her while she talks. and she shots down people who ask retarded questions that waste everyone's time. great intro course cause if you can't keep up you shouldn't be in a philosophy class.
You have to work hard to do well, but it enhances your mind. Logic will seem really boring, but it actually comes in handy when you do real philosophy. She's good about letting people ask questions and giving good answers, and she's nice and likes helping people do well if they try hard.
Prof. Allen is a great prof. but seems somewhat intimidating for a first year but if she is taken for a 3000 or 4000 level course, I guess the students would match upto her expectations.
Ahh, but there IS a difference between cause and constraint! I really wish that she would tell us her position; maybe she thinks that EVERYTHING is random! That'll turn the triangle into a square! (You have to take the class to understand that statement). Good prof., but at times hard to follow.
Did not enjoy or even like the class. Overheads were ridiculous. What's the point of taking philosophy if you can't express your own view of things?
Took the class last year, never went to lecture, skipped almost all the tutorials, and finished with an A. Is that telling you anything? All these other people, and judging by the dates they posted were my classmates, must be idiots, because that class was a joke. At this rate, a degree from York won't mean much, but it never did anyway.
Prof Allen is a really good prof. very interesting material. the only thing i didnt like is her tests.! horrible! multiple choice on a philosophy test!
Shes a good prof....her test are hard but she balances that out by marking them easy...Expects a lot of thought and work in the essays, which I think she marks a little harder...Lectures are clear for the most part and she tries her best to make the material understandable.......
Professor Allen is a really great prof. Her lectures are very clear and concise. She is approachable and answers questions. CONS: goes right to the LAST minute of class..ur not leaving 10 mins early here and her tests..not so great..multiple choice on a philosophy test..not a good idea..but still well worth it
Do not get on this woman's bad side. Careful not to look at her the wrong way ... you could get screwed. Not helpful, nor clear. Only good thing she's got going on is the fact that she marks relatively easy and she does give everyone a second chance to boost your mark.
Despite her austere appearance, she is an amazing prof who takes much time to prepare lectures and is very clear with difficult texts.
a brilliant professor who really understands how to have a class become involved and engaged in every word she speaks. I would love to take any class she would give.
I enjoyed this class, Professor Allen challenges students directly in lecture sometimes--but only to encourage them to consider their ideas. Good escalation of writing tasks, several evaluations so you have a chance to improve your grade.
This is an extremely interesting class. Professor Allen knows her material well. I absolutely loved her as my prof.
Prof. Allen has got to be one of the professors that Yorkies should be extremely proud of. Her lectures are well-prepared and easy to follow. She's also very helpful. Some writers whose work she explains in class write a bit unclearly and sometimes don't make a solid point, and that's not the professor's fault. I say she rocks!
Julie Allen is one incredible prof. Her quick wit, dark humour and ever impressive vocabulary made every lecture entertaining and worthwhile beyond simply for the sake of the course. She made us pupils laugh while giving insightful illustrations to better understand the material and she can field any question. Such a fun class!
I took this class with out knowing anything about Philo, it was a great intro to philo, i just found the class difficult becuase of the readings. Julie was very quick with her rebuttles which is rare in a prof. it would have been better if i took an intro
Overall, Prof. Allen is an excellent teacher. I am graduating whith a specialized hounours in philosophy and in 4 years I have had maybe 4 other prof's that I would even put in Prof. Allen's class. She is clear, passionate about philosophy, and has taught me so much. She's had an impact on my love for philosophy which should speak volumes.
She's very clear & concise on what she's teaching. Very knowledgable and passionate about her work: open to class debates and gives quick rebuttals. 2nd half of the course was a little too packed with readings though (compared to 1st half). Makes a good intro course to PHIL. Learned a LOT! Great course and prof overall :)
She takes a lot of pains to organize her lectures. She really knows what she is talking about. Her MCQs could make a lot of stduents feel as thoguh they never read or attended class though.
Julie was clear and concise in her lectures, but there was a lot to read for a 3.0 credit course. She's a pretty easy grader on tests and essays, and although the tests were pretty fair, the essay questions were very vague and hard to write about. Aristotle was the worst to read. This is a decent course.
This was not an easy course. But I think Prof. Allen did a good job in explaining the material in an understandable way. I thought her classes were very organized and I never had a doubt that she was not totally familiar with her stuff. I think she's an excellent prof who knows how to motivate students to do their best.
Prof. Allen really knows the material well and the overheads used were really helpful. Really good intereaction with the class, the class discussions were interesting and Prof. Allen appeared receptive to all comments. Really great class.
At first, i was intimidated by the material from the course, but i was surprised that she could make the material understandable and fun to learn. Her lectures are clear and well-organized. The material was a bit difficult, but she was helpful and clear on expectations. Her enthusiasm spreads to the whole class~~ a recommended professor~
had 3 classes with this prof, all 3rd/4th year; one of the best at York. I've learnt a great deal from her. Trust me, take her classes. Those who have rated her badly are absolutely wrong and probably don't belong in philosophy courses. This is from one who consistently got A's or A+'s during undergrad, and so knows what they are talking about.
This was my first class with this prof, and she was awesome! Although at first she comes off as a little old fashion and a little strict, her witty humour makes the class very interesting. I learned a whole lot from this course and I would definitely take it again. This is one prof at York that should not give up on teaching.
Prof. Allen is one of the best teacher's I've ever had. I have taken a number of courses with her, she is fair, consistant, and flexible. Her classes are always well thought out, relevent, and well prepared. She is an excellent prof.
prof Allen is a wealth of knowlegde. Studying Plato and Aristotle is never easy, it was a hard class. but i defintely feel that i learned a ton. She does a good job in summarizing what these two philosophers are really saying.
I think I pretty much did horrible in this class, but regardless I enjoyed it. You need to keep up with the readings for sure and ask questions when your lost. It's definetly a class that promotes thought and expands the mind. The professor is good :), funny and helpful.
Prof.Allen is amazing. She really knows her subject matter & she is able to relay that knowledge to her students. She is a fair marker and very helpful. She is more than willing to help those in need. She is incredibly understanding & flexible. I've had 2 classes with her and I would take more. Truly, my favorite Prof. at York!

Professor Allen is an extremely good professor, and is very helpful in answering questions. She always replies right away to e-mails, and her class is very interesting. She is a awesome professor, and everyone should take her class on plato and aristotle.
I enjoyed her class,i got a lot out of it. She explained the readings and expanded on them. I would have been interesting to hear her defend her position as a libertarian. Who are these people that complain about reading? Her level of teaching is not hard, the topic is hard. Also, multiplechoice questions in a test make the test easier.
She was a fantastic prof, very approachable and one of the friendliest, most helpful profs I've ever had at York U.
Although I don't really enjoy Philosophy, Prof. Allen succeeded in making the course interesting. She allowed others to voice concerns & responded to each person's questions. Very in depth analysis of Plato & Aristotle. Material was a little challenging but overall good course.
Prof. Allen is a great teacher. She is the only one I know that will give you a second chance with grades. She is very helpful and she is very smart. A tape-recorded will help in lectures though, because everything she has to say is important and God knows your hand can’t keep up. I enjoyed her classes and recommend them to everyone.
Very interesting lectures, and very comfortable atmosphere. Classes were enjoyable but felt there wasn't enough time to ocver what the course set out to, but nonetheless professor Allen was entertaining and understanding.
I became a libertarian at 4 in the morning because of this class. Maybe it was the lack of sleep over the past few days, or the large amount of alcohol in my system. But I came into the class as a hard determinist, and it really made me think and change my mind. I found professor Allen very funny and interesting.
Prof. J Allen was one of my most amazing people I have ever met. She was a great prof and knew a lot on her subject. Great class...
An excellent prof. Fair, reasonable, KNOWLEDGEABLE. She has a way of using the weirdest examples and scenarios to clarify even the most difficult material. She's funny, I give her points for not being condescending while she teaches. A great experience in each and every one of her classes.
i doubt Prof Allen will even read this. I will honestly say she was a great prof. Nothing more needs to be said. I have my reason why she's good and that's all that matters. Contact Peter Devine if you wish to know more (i don't care if the prof knows its me
HAD HER FOR PHIL1000 AS WELL AND WAS AT FIRST I WAS SKEPTICAL, BUT WITH THE [MORE INTERESTING] MATERIAL, I WAS A LOT MORE APPRECIATIVE AND IMPRESSED BY PROF. ALLEN THE SECOND TIME AROUND.
I enjoy this prof's sarcastic attitude. I think she knows her stuff and I admire her ability to defend her point of views to skeptical students. She seems hard on her students but not without good reason. If you want my straight up advice Allen, don't read these to judge your career choice. Look within!
Prof. Allen is a great prof. I had her last year for PHIL 1000 and was happy to see that she was also the prof for PHIL2015 this year. She answers questions clearly, and creates a comfortable learning environment with her comments, examples, etc.
she has excellent control of the course. I like the way she answers questions. she makes things as clear as possible.when you think that the question has become too tough, she reduces it to nothing difficult.
GOOD TEACHER, LEARNED A LOT!
I can truly say that I enjoyed your class, although it could be a bit long at times (3 hrs of ethics is a lot on mondays). what i liked most was your apparent genuine love and interest of ethics and philosophy, which came through in your lectures...you push your students and expect good things from them, sometimes i couldn't figure out exactly what
Did you know that terrorists never laugh? Prof Allen is a machine. She knows the material. She'll give you a thorough 'exegesis' of all the texts you read. If you usually BS your way through phil tests it doesn't work as well in this class. While there is a clear structure for marking tests essay marking schemes aren't so clear. Viva Allen.
Learned a lot, interesting material, good prof & objective.. keep teaching please!
Professor Allen is one of the best professors EVER! Take any class she teaches - I guarantee you it's worth it!!
As an aspiring teacher,I admire the patience, skill and dedication of professor Allen.Participation allows the lecture to have character and become more interesting.Always is well-prepared and consise.Your teaching is important to those of us who want to learn.Don't let others discourage you from doing what you do best.Keep teaching please!
Good teacher....straightforward.....tells you what she wants and expects
I really enjoyed this class. I love philosophy, but Prof. Allen made it even more enjoyable! Very thorough... I had the best notes ever! She is really nice too! Keep doing what you do best Prof. Allen! Keep teaching and inspiring people like me!
This was one of my fav.classes/Prof's this year!I loved it!Prof. Allen is very thorough and the material was easier to grasp b/c of it.That doesn't mean it was easy, but this class & Prof are definetely worth taking. She's nice too!Prof Allen, you are one of my fav.Prof's!You should teach some 4yr courses,we could use a thorough Prof teaching those!!
Tough class, but in a good way. Enjoyed it.
difficult stuff to grasp...prof. broke it down so it was easier to understand..some material in course difficult
Professor Allen really gave us a lot of insight on greek philosophy. Her lectures are not boring like other professors which encouraged me to always come to class. Her lectures really made me wonder about life, existence, and death. I now voluntarily read philosophical texts and even teach my family about this subject.

awesome prof
I really enjoyed this class. If you are looking for a thought provoking interesting philosophical discussion I highly recommend this course. Professor Allen gives well organized and interesting lectures, eagerly answers pending questions, and provides fair tests and assignments.
This professor is one of my favourites! Yes she is considerably hard, yet the material covered isn’t so easy either. She is able to explain everything that she lectures about without having to resort to a text or her notes. She is a very fair professor who is made to teach. I always repeated her thought experiments and philosophical questions be
Prof Allen clearly knows her stuff. Her lectures are always organized and clear. She is very helpful and always encourages questions and comments.
Very good prof. Easy to understand and follow.
Straight talking with no fluff. Explains what needs explaining. Material is not impossible, just requires a bit of care. Likes to "discourse" with students over silly details (positive/negative trait?). Should not worry so much about her "telos". Overall a generally good experience in her class. Course is worth the $$.
Great professor. Explains everything well. Answers all questions. Class is not hard if you just put in the effort. VERY UNDERSTANDING.
Prof. Allen is an excellent professor. She is able to clarify complex ideas and is patient with students. Her sense of humour shows her passion for her subject and makes lectures interesting. She is also flexible with deadlines, which was very helpfil. I would recommend Prof. Allen to anyone.
Great Teacher!!!!!
Professor Allen did an Excellent job of breaking down complex material in an understandable and pragmatic way
great prof
Good teacher, but doesn't always put forth a strong effort in answering questions when they do arise.
Lectures could be boring at times... basically explained readings. Didn't bring too much new stuff in terms of material that wasn't in the books. I think some more real-world examples would make things much more interesting and applicable. In other news, a very fair marker and I think genuinely is interested in the material and her students.
We tend to skip entire units; we tend not to have our work back soon enough to make decisions about future assignments; she tends to lecture too quickly; classes tend to run long.
Interesting course, phenomenal teaching style. Very explanatory, makes class enjoyable and humourous, would take another one of her classes in a heartbeat.
Overall, the class was extremely interesting and well presented. This professor is very clear, fun and easy to approach.
Prof Allen is an excellent lecturer. She is extremely clear and systematic in her presentation of material. While some may think of her as stern at first, once you talk to her personally or ask questions u'll realize she is extremely helpful and dedicated to her task as a teacher. Although, because she is so good, she also sets harder tests.
Excellent professor. Im not in philosophy and this was my favourite course of the term. Very clear and thorough. Tests are very fair, but you have to do the work and show up to class. Overall I highly reccomend her.
Rare in fulfilling most important philosophy prof criterion: has genuine interest in getting to the bottom of each issue, and has thought more critically about each than I could have. Very professional; argues each author's view as well as possible. Sometimes I wish she'd help me develop my objections in class instead of rebutting them so quickly.
she would have been a better prof if she cared to reply to sutdent's e-mails rather than keeping them hanging on nothing. Found her very dry.
While she's tough it, in the long run, is the most helpful thing for a student.I think my essay-writing skills improved in all my classes after her first assignment. She keeps an interesting topic interesting, unlike other phil profs who wreck the material with their lectures.I'd go out of my way to have her as a prof, highly recommended.
Fun, smart, and patient with people who have annoying questions.
excellent lectures, very clear, informative and engaging
Very approachable, helpful, lively. Likes to joke around once in a while.
Great Professor, definitely one of my favorites at York, She truly knows her material well, and thus makes her classes more entertaining, My philosophical essay writing skill have improved thanks to her outlines and her tests are fair and cover what you should know. Overall she is a Great Prof.
Not the greatest...
Helpful teacher who, while her lectures can be very difficult to follow, is patient enough to deal with questions, is relatively clear and offers plenty of guidance and chances to get a good grade. It is important not to confuse the difficulty of the content of the course with the professor.
Really great professor. Her lectures are long, but they are really interesting. You MUST take detailed notes, but if you do you will ace all the her tests. She's extremely straight-forward, no surprises on the tests, and she always has time for her students. Her Metaphysics class is the most interesting class you can take. Awesome prof.
Prof Allen is charismatic and interesting. She makes Classical philosophy fun and exciting, bringing in contemporary examples and terms to aid in understanding the thought of the Pre-Socratics, Plato and Aristotle. She is a tough but fair teacher and definitely worth taking classes with.
keep on being funny and keep on teaching
Demanding, strict, straightfwd. At times seemed mean and severe to the point of not wanting students to do well. Tests challenging. Seemed to strive to create a killer exam. Txtbk is too advanced & mathematical. Prof's notes didn't bridge gap very well. Course should be called Intro to FORMAL logic.
Textbook hard to decipher, although Prof. Allen does a remarkable job in providing clarity to a somewhat difficult topic. Not a slackers course; if you skip one or two homeworks you will find yourself completely loss. If you do every homework and show to class, you can easily get an A. Extremely helpful, and friendly once you know her.
One of the best Philosophy professors in the school, for sure!
The tests certainly assess whether you have prepared or not. Even though you may have prepared, Prof Allen's tests are extremely thorough. The lectures are interesting and helpful for understanding the material. It was difficult at times to know what to read for each class.
good prof but hard, expect to work hard
could have been more clear and consise, examples were just as difficult as the readings
Prof. Allen is very serious about her performance as a professor and cares about her students. A lot depends on TAs. If they cannot clarify material for you nor answer your questions...the topic will be harder to grasp. Study hard. You may have to refer to other texts.
Shes great, she explains the text very nicely and her class is very enjoyable. you must read the readings from the text before you go to class or else you will understand nothing throughout the whole lecture.
very interesting professor, definitely well prepared, outgoing, and professional. a pleasure to hear lecture, really.
A very strong lecturer. Very responsible, very serious and well-organized in her job. A very fair person as well. I have learned a lot in Philosophy, critical thinking and the efficient use of English language. In her class every second counts, no room for any waste of time, Zero tollerance for BS..., Highly recommended for serious students.
Great course for those interested in ancient Greek philosophy. The material covered requires the student to be open-minded and patient. Prof. Allen is an intense lecturer so attendance is mandatory. The assignments are challenging so it requires the student to be concise and organized. I highly recommend voice recording the lectures.
Prof. Allen is incredibly smart, and passionate about teaching. The material is hard to grasp- understanding in the beginning is crucial for the rest of the work. Her tests may seem hard but that is only if you do not know the material- she is very fair. Amazing professor - very intelligent and knowledgable.
great professor, engaging and fun.
Has an engaging personality She's also inflexible, seemed that she had own goals to achieve and the overall well being of the students wasn't highest in priority. She seemed very eager to get a promotion. Watch out for bad TA's as they are no help to her difficult class. Apply for pass/fail option in first 2 weeks of class. VERY difficult 40% final
perhaps the best lecturer I have ever had - considering how complex and at time maddeningly the material was she explains it in a very clear and structured way. Clearly, she has a brilliant mind. She is however, a little cold and standoffish making her difficult to approach.
Julie is a good prof however she needs to pick better TA's! Our TA was aweful and since tutorials are mandatory a good TA might have made it so people actually went! Probably the worst tutorial attendance I have seen!
Great course, great professor. The course offers a lot of engaging material and the professor makes the material crystal-clear. A great choice for students who are serious about philosophy.
Course structured, presented in a very comprehensible manner. 1 suggestion; that the overhead notes explain in much more detail, the points in lecture. Lecture note taking is not equally easy or beneficial and for best knowledge dissemination, needs to be supplemented with paper explanations of the prof's lecture content, to be studied afterward.
concise and professional
LOVED THIS CLASS!!! Prof. Allen made this course so interesting. Prior to this class I was not interested whatsoever in philosophy. I took it as an elective and I'm glad I did. It was such an interesting course! Prof. Allen was so helpful (displaying notes online), excellent communication, and amazing lectures!!!!
One of best profs I ever had! Amazing lectures, excellent communication & overall great prof! I highly recommend this class but be sure to have prof. Allen. Thanks for the great class...absolutely loved it!!!
Prof Allen is one of the best professors in the department. She gives you genuine insight into the material, and is very open and helpful. Her lectures are thorough - she doesn't try to oversimplify the ideas -, clear, and give you a real appreciation for the problems/ideas at hand. One of my favourite professors at York.
Content was interesting, yet carried on for far too long. Many of the material over lapped making some of the course feel redundant. Her ability to present the material was interesting and concise. I enjoyed her lectures.
great class! prof. allen was very clear and interesting. her lectures were awesome, the material covered was also awesome! it helped me out in other philosophy classes as well! definetly would recommend this class with this prof, and am also looking into other classes with this prof!!
Prof. Allen is tuff but fair. Her courses can be rigorous, but they are extreamly rewarding. Prof. Allens selection of course material is interesting, and her background and direction are a major asset. The presentation style was well thought out and the ideas are easy to get a hold of when they are worked through in class (though coffee helps)
OK teaching skills; however she is too boring in lectures.
she is amazing. always clear in lecture, gives good info and blows my mind!
The best Professor, York Univeristy caring and insightful, you will not get any better professor show up, do the work be interested and you will do great very hard tests, but the class and the experience is very rewarding, Professor Allen is a very talented, and respectful Professor that everyone in their right mind should meet!
Prof. Allen is fantastic, but its up to you whether you benefit from her classes. If you actually want to learn, and you don't mind working a little harder than you are used to, you will be lucky enough to discover that she is one of the best profs we have at York. If not: you probably won't have so much fun. I found it was well worth the effort :)
amazing prof! wish we had more like her! easy going and soo smart. skilled speaker, highly recommend taking her classes if you like philosophy! she's so nice
Very cool appearance (feminist I hope) but I think she should read Orwell's, "Politics of Language," to help her tame her lengthy words. Her language may confuse both us, her students, and herself at times. She does not seem to add any more clarity to the topics addressed in the text, but rather makes it less simple.
Professor Allen is very skilled at her craft. Lectures have a clear thesis, and are presented in a top-down approach, which makes the arguments very accessible. Tests are thorough, however, if you attend class and actually put forth an honest effort, you will do quite well. I highly recommend her.
From the comments I've read so far, a lot of people like this lady. When I had her for Intro. to Philosophy last year she didn't seem enthusiastic at all...or even happy. Monotone voice. But I only had her for half a year because my teacher got sick.
Shes smart and funny. She brings the material into the lecture and allows debate, provoking thought, and unlimited potential for new ideas. There are no rhetorical questions.
Great professor! Keeps classes interesting with engaging questions and discussion, has a great sense of humour too! If you are serious about philosophy and class in general, then you will be rewarded, if you don't put in the effort then you will suffer. Put in the work and you will reap the rewards, no surprises with Allen. Highly recommend!
Professor Allen can seem intimidating at times, but she is actually a very down to earth and interesting person. Her classes are never bird courses, but if you do the work you will not walk away empty handed. A great professor and a real asset to York U!
allows plenty of lecture time to answer questions regarding confusing material. Goes over most reading in class to make sure concepts are understood.
Sharp, knowledgeable, genuine personality and a great teacher! Dumb questions were asked, even by the TA, but she always responded graciously and meaningfully. She said that she likes teaching this course and this was reflected in her passion to explicate the dilemma of determinism and free will.
Her lectures can seem boring at times but she is a very knowledgable person and is always available if you need to ask her any questions or see her during office hours.
Her no-nonsense approach works effectively with the material, and quickly impresses on students the importance of taking the class seriously and being active in our learning. Her explanations of everything are so systematic and clear that it seems a bit like spoon-feeding, but of the best sort: medicine, not sugar.
She is very professional. She is helpful but you must know the material. I remember I went in for help the day before the test and I couldn't form a question because the material was difficult to tackle, but she still helped. Do the readings, take notes, come to lectures and you will surely pass.
I had a terrible experience in this class. :(
Tests are the worst: Marking in the written portion of tests is not fair. Average mark for first test was 60% (Prof. said a few that got a high mark on that test actually brought the average up to a 60). Many people dropped this course.
I took a critical reasoning course at another University and received a 90%. I barely passed the first two tests. I talked to another student, and she said she got an 80% at another University as well, and she was also barely passing the course. Logic hasn't changed... just the professor -_-
She's hilarious and amazing.
An excellent teacher of basic logic. Anyone who found the tests hard seriously had to not have been paying attention, or not coming to tutorials. Everything is laid out very clearly and, well, logically. What's not to understand?
She's a pretty good prof. She warned us all that mastering logic takes practice... Don't take that lightly. She also has a good sense if humour.
Amazing professor of basic logic. She took a difficult course and made it understandable. Homework assignments which she assigned assisted in making sure you understand the material. If you put the effort in, you will enjoy the class.
She is a great professor and is very easy to understand. There was only one time that I felt the need to leave early from class and that was because she was going over something we had already learned to clarify for other students. She is very approachable if you want to talk to her after class.
Great Professor! Her and Mark made this class very easy going and informative. She was very understanding about due dates and giving us clear expectations on essays and tests. It was an interesting course although hard if you don't get help prior to handing things in.
First of all, she always spoke in a loud and clear tone. Secondly, she would provide a million examples to ensure that the class understood what was being taught. And finally, this professor has a lot of patience and a great sense of humor. I enjoyed this class very much and highly recommend it!
Very helpful and clear explanation on a tough subject.
you cannot miss a class, or you missed a whole lesson and we will have already moved on and had an assignment due for the following class.. every class you learn something new, you review what you didnt know from last week and she helps you no matter how many times she needs to do it. Also, we need more practice.
This isn't an Intro to Logic course and if it were, she's not the teacher for it. The whole class is a rush; she rushes through the material and has probably taught this course so much that she assumes everyone knows what she's talking about. Even though she opens the class up for questions she explains things in way too fast and complex of a way.
The lecture is not boring but just too much review questions and not easy at all.
Very very clear and concise. Makes a tough subject easy to understand. Course requires a lot of work and as mentioned below, if you miss a class, you have a lot of catching up to do. Textbook is totally useless, so dont bother reading it but you need it for assignments. Used lots of examples to clarify and made sure everyone understood.
She is an extraordinarily clear communicator and a really focused teacher. During my time at York, I met few professors as brilliant as she. She could teach anywhere. Definitely take her class if you get a chance. You'll grow as a thinker and a writer. I just wish I had chosen more of her courses when I had the opportunity. York's lucky to have her
Simply abysmal.
Logic was one of the most difficult classes I have ever encountered. However, Julie is a really smart and helpful prof. The class pace was definitely fast so you MUST keep up with the work or else you will fail. Slackers, beware!!
Reads notes most of the time. Course consists of three assignments, participation, and final exam. Lectures are very dry and uninspiring. Likes to use fancy words which complicates things even further. Would not choose this professor again, if given a choice.
- Inspired me to continue studying philosophy! - Professor Allen is distinctly unbiased when presenting different ethical models - She is consistently clear in explanation of topics - Work flows well with lectures, features a nice learning curve to philosophical writing - Great introduction to philosophy, great selection of books
Only issue with Ethics course is that the exam felt out of place, would of preferred a final paper! Everything else was excellent
Not bad, complicated but not bad.
Terrible. Has knowledge but cannot teach for the life of her. Does not like student. Does not like answering questions. Not worth it.
Horrible lectures. Dry,boring, reads off the paper, answers questions and makes you look like an idiot for asking. Provides slides which are of no use for Final exam. Review questions for the final could not be answered by TA, yet it is expected to be answered by students. Course consists of 3 assignments and one final (40percent). Avoid if you can.
Its not that the course is hard, it is the fact that the prof will try to make you fail or achieve a lower grade, unnecessarily. Ask a question? forget about it, you will be shot down. Can't teach. Great course (material wise), terrible instructor. York U, are you reading this? take note please.
Avoid. Absolutely horrible
I think the people who have rated her poor are the people who have performed poorly in the course. She was great. Her lecture material is what's on the exam. If you attend all lectures, tutorial discussions and do your readings, you'll do fine. You'll gain a more in depth understanding of some of the most influential philosophers.
Hard to approach, slightly rude and unorganized.
Excellent prof. She seems intimidating but is actually super smart and can explain material in many different shapes and forms. Everything on the exam is based on lecture and essays are super easy if you follow her very detailed outline. Shes a great philosophy prof and for those giving her a bad rating are prob people who just did bad in the class
Excellent prof. Readings are explained in depth and exam is strickly based off of lecture material. Her essays are easy as well if you follow her detailed outline. She seems intimidating but is actually a very sweet person. I love that readings were not from a textbook, all exam questions were given in advance which was super helpful.
Prof Julie Allen is dedicated to explaining all the content in lectures thoroughly. The book is cheap and the class is very informative. Plus instead of an exam, its a take home exam. Side note, she is very intimidating however if you have concerns she will address them. Must work for the grade you deserve... not a bird course!!
Patient with students when they don't understand something. Takes her time to explain theories.
Amazing professor !! She is very clear and precise with her material. This was one of the last courses I took at York, and I do not regret it. It is although important to attend all classes and achieve a fine understanding of modr. This course will help you not only in academia butalso in professional life as it expands your analaytical abilities.
Rude, boring, does not like questions. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Julie Allen articulates complicated philosophy concepts very well. She is also engaging because she has a great sense of humour, which compels you to go to class to listen to her speak. Getting the exam study questions in advance was extremely helpful for the final exam, since the study questions prepare you well for the exam.
Took this course in the summer. Regarding the lectures, the professor is hilarious and explains philosophical concepts in a delightful way. The lectures weren't dull but you really got to pay attention in any philosophy course to grasp the main point of whatever philosopher you're studying in order to get an A. Also participate in tutorials!!!
Took PHIL 2100 during the strike. She did an excellent job of teaching us what we needed to know in a short amount of time, and even held extra tutorials. Stephane was an excellent TA. Logic is like math: you have to practice. It's as simple as that. Julie and Stephane made everything easier.
A great prof and a solid choice. Inspiring lectures. If your not interested in the material you won't do well.
I was really intimidated by ethics at first! However, I worked really hard to understand the key concepts and ideas of each philosopher which made the exams and essays a breeze. The notes she offers are very helpful. She is very approachable. I really enjoyed her humour throughout the lectures. A class definitely worth taking! Don't think twice!
She's pretty boring and so is the class. If it does not interest you, you won't do well I guess. I didn't even try but I got a B.
She is not terrible as some other students here said. Her lecture seems quite boring but the contents are very fruitful. She also makes some jokes during lecture and are funny. There are lots of works but she is not a tough grader. (she is very fair) She is a good professor and I would like to take her course again.
Her voice is difficult to focus on.
A great professor. Explain the doubts using simple examples for better understanding. I took this full year course in 1 semester. Recommend this professor for this course
She does explain some of the concepts pretty well, by using analogies. Though it is hard to follow when there is no lecture slide to focus on the material. My TA was not very good, she doesn't really help us understand the readings that much.
She is a very monotone speaker making lectures very boring.
Professor Julie Allen is one of those 'old school' professors whose sole intent seems to be to get the students to learn the required material. Although she is a genuinely nice person, there is no room for ignorance in her classroom. I've taken two classes with her at York and I would take more if I could.
Prof. Allen is very monotone and boring to listen to in lecture. For a first year PHIL course this course in my opinion is intense. On the plus side she missed a ton of classes so our exam had less on it. If you can't write essays do not take this course. Basically 100% essays. And TA's make it or break it. Too much info for a 1st yr course!
Shes an ok prof. you better have a clear head and re-read the textbook to understand it. you need to understand the materials rather than just memorize whats in the textbook. its pretty easy however the last paper was confusing to do because her outline for it was confusing. But she will help you alot if you just ask her for help.
Prof. Julie Allen has a clear and understandable teaching style. This class consisted of two in-class tests which were average difficulty, and two essays. She allows students to miss ONE out of two tests for a valid reason without any documentation, and provides a make-up assignment. A very fair marker; my grades were always higher than I expected.
Her voice is absolutely terrible. Easy to fall asleep in her class. Her lectures are overall pretty boring. I used to enjoy philosophy, but her class was just awful. Learning more from the T.A. then I do her.
Bad prof, boring, monotone. Her voice is very harsh and the way she talks comes off as aggressive. She uses sparknotes to teach... word for word, and quote for quote. The two TA's who were assisting her in the course knew more about the course material than her. The course was very disorganized, and instead of moodle she uses turnitin
All the exam/assignment questions were based off things we didn't go over in class to force you to do the readings (which were long) so there was no benefit to showing up for lectures, which were dry and dragged on. TAs had to teach us everything we were going to be graded on. All the readings can be found for free online if you just Google them.
Really great content and planning .... The course flowed like a waterslide from ancient Greek to angry britts in 6 weeks. There was a lot of writing (wouldn't be except the course was condensed) but it made sense and there was a lot of room for flexibility in topics. Great course would take it again
I found that the material she taught in lectures did not align to what was supposed to be taught in the course. Her lectures are very intense, so boring and super difficult to keep up with. I'm definitely not dumb but I would not recommend anyone to take this course if you think its a bird course - it is not a bird course, especially with her!
She is inefficient when it comes to getting grades back, it is the end of the semester and she still hasn't marked a single thing we have done. Due to this there is no feedback whatsoever. It is very dry. For detailed instruction you should come to class because she taught things that aren't in the textbook. Wouldn't recommend this course with her
Monotone, hard, all essays. You won't get grades back and you'll be bored.
I believe the course was meant to be fairly easy and straightforward. However, the professor has failed to return anything back by the end of the course and it leaves students confused as to where they stand in the course. Otherwise, the professor is very boring and attendance is mandatory to receive your 20% participation grade.
DrAllen is actually very kind individual. Her lectures are funny & informational if you listen. She released a List of the exam short answers to study for. Majority of your marks for Phil2075 depend on your TA so if they mark easy, you will be golden! Textbook isnt necessary because its just a compilation of Ethics papers that available online.
She's a good & kind person but as a prof, she fails big time! She often makes unnecessary passive-aggressive comments towards students, regularly late to lectures, never gives marks back on time, is not clear in instructions of assignment unless you ask her what she exactly wants on the paper. Several times, she's canceled lectures 1 hour before.
Attendance is important & she will call out students who rarely participate. Tests contain material from the textbook AND from class. If u don't understand smthing, ask her and she will explain thoroughly. Good prof but lectures can be long & boring depending on the content that week. Also the course is almost done and we only have 1/4 grades back.
Prof. Allen is kind and easy to access outside of class. She is very helpful in emails and is generous with deadlines during this pandemic. She is a tough marker from what I can tell as of now, but we only have 1/4 grades back and already completed the final assignment. I just wish she would provide us with our grades in a more timely fashion.
This course was pretty straight forward as long as you've done your readings. The essays were somewhat difficult if you didn't understand the content, however, tests are strictly based on the readings provided. Grades were a bit delayed as the course was online. Prof. Allen was very quick to response to emails and help students with understanding.
Dr. J. Allen was helpful in making a dull subject interesting ,which directly contributed to benefiting my understanding of the course content.
I believe it would have been a class thats easier to pay attention to in-class, but due to COVID there was def a lot of disorganization and hard to listen to in online classes. Almost withdrew the course doing my last essay, but the material can be interesting I guess.
Professor Allen is organized and a natural at dissecting difficult concepts into manageable parts. I certainly worked hard and learned a lot in a six-week-long summer course.
Overall great Professor, and very understanding and accomodating
Thoroughly enjoyed the course. Lectures were easy to follow and test and assignment expectations were clearly articulated. You will receive the appropriate grade for your effort.
I have received the privilege to learn from this great professor this year. When it comes to understanding students, their life outside of school, and the issues one may be dealing with, Prof. Allen is truly an inspiration. Professor Allen is the best and greatest professor I have had as of yet, she gives students respect and is very understanding.
i love how prof allen is caring and understanding, i told her that i am sick and she understood the situation and she did not penalize me for submitting late. she submitted few lectures late but i understand that this online course thing is new and not so easy to handle. overall, definitely take the class with her.
She is really knows her craft and she enjoys teaching it. She was able to explain what at first may appear to be complex concepts with very simple words and practical examples you can relate to. She is approachable and answers emails quickly. Ethics is a must ,by the end of the course you will be more critical of your own actions and motivations.
I really enjoyed this courses and although the material is hard the prof was great!
the prof explains the material well, I found some of the readings hard, so her explanations really helped. I took this course in the summer during COVID(online). In the summer the course goes twice as fast so keep in mind that you have to comprehend things at a faster pace than during the normal school year. I learned a lot during the course.
Dr. Allen is very knowledgable, understanding and kind. Stay consistent with your homework and ask of you have any questions. I found that she is a though grader but you take away a lot from the course. As well, due to COVID, it was difficult.
I feel like professor could be lot more engaging with the course and students. The participation assignment were given at the end. Marking assignment takes extremely long. After the semester being over student did not even received their marks. Things were so slow in this online course. I would not recommend to take this course. It is difficult.
I have mixed feelings about this prof. On one hand she does a decent job of explaining the concepts and her tests and assignments are fair enough, but on the other hand the course is completely disorganized! Her lecture notes are a mess, assignments aren't graded, and lectures are posted retroactively.
If you want a professor who is organized and reliable, Allen is not for you. She posts lectures sometimes an entire week late. Tests aren't even available to take during scheduled class time, which is a huge inconvenience for some. Marking takes way too long. This course is unnecessarily stressful because of how unreliable the prof is.
She is very sweet and understanding. If you need an extension, she will most likely give you one! My main problem is her lectures. Her lectures are on word docs and expects you to follow along, which would be fine, but she talks so much and a lot of what she says is not needed. She has put me to sleep multiple times.
If you have her as a professor don't take the course trust me. Her assignments are very tough. I haven't gotten a piece of work back from her and I finished my exam. the exam was very tough, the wording was all over the place and the readings are crazy a lot and difficult. The professor has no live lectures and her slides are very useless.
I was weary of taking her class after reading the reviews but my experience taking this class was great. Professor Allen can be a little tough but she throws in some jokes during lectures and clarifies the readings which was super helpful. Overall, if you do the readings, show up to lectures and participate in tutorials, you should be good!
Prof Allen is very knowledgable. I enjoy her lectures, they are very descriptive and she posts the slides. There are no tutorials, so in lecture participation matters. She takes up homework questions and is always available for extra help if you are confused. The course has three tests, 1 essay and a final writing assignment. Would recommend!
Professor Allen delivers a good but tedious lecture. Paying attention in class should prep you for the tests. Participation is important to get the best experience, ask questions and answer her questions. Her marking is slow, don't expect speedy feedback. The course can create positive personal development if internalized correctly.
Almost 3 weeks and still haven't gotten my final grade. The most unprofessional professor I have ever had. I have emailed multiple times and still haven't gotten any answer. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
the course was taught well and was easy, but lectures were very boring and there was zero feedback given all year. We submitted 3 tests, 2 papers, and 4 participation exercises. The first two tests were marked by a computer, the third was marked decently fast, and everything else was never returned. final marks returned 1 month late
very very disorganized. told us she was going to post our final assignment over the weekend and she didn't. she posted it days late giving us less than a week to actually do it as if we all don't work and have other classes.
The most useless 3 hours of my life. The whole lecture could have been brought down to max 1 hour. Most of the class left halfway through. Constantly hacking. Getting grades back was a joke because it took forever. Save yourself some time and do not take this class.
Very boring! Strong about her own opinion and does not like when you talk about God.
Extremely boring lectures, and extremely unprofessional behaviour. Replies to not a single email, almost every single student of her's had to drop the course as instructions for course completion were made unclear.
This was a very disorganized course. They tested a blended model for this semester, and have only posted 1 online lecture for the entire semester. They post assignments, and when you go to hand it in, the professor tells you it isn't for marks. The textbook is over $250 CAD, and doesn't help you with derivations, which is 70% of the work graded.
This blended online course was a disaster. Lectures uploaded weeks late, often only several days before midterms and only covering a fraction of what we needed to know. Completely unacceptable standard of teaching. She seems kind, but the delivery of this course set us up to fail. I'm a straight A student, this is usually considered an easy course.
Prof was terrible, TA (Caleb) was great. Learnt nothing from the prof, the TA taught us every week during tutorial. The prof is being investigated or something by the department because she did nothing the whole sem. Old textbook, hard to find online. The course was still easy as we only covered like 2 chapters so the final only had those chapters.
!! Do not trust the good overall rating of Prof. Allen on this site, it is outdated. If you take one of her courses any time after the year 2024, be aware that she is extremely unorganized and cannot use technology. The majority of students in my class submitted course complaints because she literally did not teach us.
She is scary. The second she walked in the vibe was different. The best way I can describe is she is that one substitute teacher that no one liked.
Cannot recommend this course under Julie. The content itself wasn't very difficult, but the delivery was the issue. Late lectures, with audio issues. Assignments that were impossible to solve questions due to typos. Late grades with no communication on the reason. The course is possible, but it's not worth the hassle.
So bad the school removed her this year 2 weeks before the sem was over. Disorganized, incoherent, disrespectful.
Absolutely horrible. She literally got removed from our class. She frequently canceled classes, took 40-minute smoke breaks, coughed persistently throughout lectures. Lectures were unclear and repetitive, and course materials were never provided/ given last minute. In one exam, she left the room for 30 minutes, leaving her BROTHER supervising.
She didn't teach well, I agree, but she was clearly struggling with health complications. I hope she gets better soon.
