I hate her she is the worst. Do not take her!!!
Horrible teacher. Learned nothing in her class. Boring. Her voice is a roller coaster, if you've had her you know what I mean. Spare yourself the misery.
She is a very easy grader on exams for gender studies but she is really annoying. She talks extremelly slow and is just weird.
Terribel teacher.
one of the worst classes I ever took her voice is obnoxious and the class is painful to sit through. It is obvious that she does not like teaching the class. Her Gender Studies supposedly arent bad but do not I repeat DO NOT take her for Lit.

Loved the discussion format of this class - it was a nice change from constant lecturing by other profs. And Her voice! Well, it grows on you. I think it's an endearing quality. But I have heard that she's a **** in English classes, so, WGS yes, LIT no

She's a nice lady but doesn't know her stuff well enough. Make sure you do your own reading because she doesn't explain things clearly enough. Hard grader. I get the feeling she thinks she's better than everyone.
Amberg is quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. Avoid her at all costs.
stay away from Amberg.
Very hard grader on Papers! Takes things way too in depth and cares way to much about Women and Gender Studies...drove me crazy....dont take her whatever you do!
This lady is a *****!! She's a very hard grader. She thinks she's better than everyone. Don't recommend her for any of your classes. She never lets you out of class early ever. She will grade your papers based on what she wants them to be about.
she is the hardest teacher. she will NOT give u an A because everything you do is wrong in her opinion, she talks sooooooooo slow & drives me crazy
She is my academic advisor, and she is absolutely no help whatsoever. I had to schedule classes all by my self cuz she wouldnt return my emails. Don't know about her as a prof
STAY AWAY FROM AMBERG! Her voice drives you up a wall, her comments and belitting make you want to choke her and her grading is biased, based on how much you suck up to her. Impossible to get an A unless you share her exact viewpoints!
I found her class interesting and despite other comments, got an A in her class. I wasnt a 4.0 student or anything so this in not an impossible task.
I think she is very attractive and her voice is not annoying at all. She grades papers toughly, but is always willing to talk to you about your work. Take her!
Not the best but not the worst. There are better choices out there. Grades pretty tough and gives you a lot more little "busy work" assignments than some other teachers.
Well, she isn't too bad looking or annoying. She lets you out early and there are no tests. She seems like a big femenist though so you better be all about that. And- if she wants you to write a paper on a certain topic,do it.
Hmmm...well.....she is not very accepting of opinions that's for sure. She will make you change topics if she does not like it. So...when you do your research papers...write about homosexuality or women's rights.
one word describes this woman...terrible. unclear instructions on just about everything except woman's rights. this lady should not be allowed to even step foot on a college campus because she is so narrow minded. my suggestion, avoid her at ALL costs. ps, she says "God" really weird.

Good class, must do required readings for discussion. She provides a in-depth discussion to help us understand each author. She grades tough, expects college level work, and study for mid term, b/c it is alot of work in a short amount of time. She knows her lit.
Very good professor; she expects you to do your part and she does hers. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Not exactly an easy class, but I liked it.

Don't take her. She's a feminist and talks really slow. She's boring too. None of what i learned will apply to my writing. Get out while u still can!
Worst class ever. Amberg is unclear about all assignments and tests. brown nosing helps, grades according to how much she likes you. Also, bring a pillow, youll need it.
Mid-term is pretty hard, so make sure you read the selected readings. Dr. Amberg knows a great deal about literature and expects college level work from her students.
Dr. Amberg is a very intelligent woman. Her tests are straight-forward and combine essays as well as objective questions. My only complaint is she expects students to give the "accepted" understanding of literature without thinking outside the box. Read Sparknotes and you'll be fine.
I was required to take this class, and otherwise I never would have forced myself through it. Even my friends who were English majors hated her. She's a total feminazi, and if you write anything but what she thinks your grade will suffer.
absolutely horrible teacher... im an english major and i though the class was awful... she looks for the complete text book answer, and any answer thats actually well thought out or philosophical in any way, is wrong. I dropped the class at the last second because i couldn't take it any longer.
No one really looks forward to "writing about literature", but you end up learning a lot of information that will be incredibly helpful in the future (especially if you intend on taking the GREs!) She is very involved in social and worldly issues, but I think that it's important that college students are exposed to that.

Very interesting, intellegent professor. The discussion format is fun if you have a class of quaily people. I do wish she'd pick less mainstream readings, because I know she reads some very cutting-edge stuff. Her lessons are clear, but she's a little intimidating. Worthwhile.
Is she tough? Yes. Does she expect a lot? Yes. Is it impossible to get a 4 in LIT 282? No. All you have to do is pay attention, answer her questions, and study hard for the tests. I dreaded this class because everyone told me that Dr. Amberg is "evil." While she is certainly not the world's friendliest woman, she is definitely not evil.
Expects a lot, but is very throrough if you take the tame to ask for help. Brilliant person.
I wasn't too fond of the grades I received in that class. I felt I deserved low A's on my papers and received high B's. I also did not like most of the topics the papers assigned concerned.
Dr. Amberg expects too much. She's one of those teachers who will hardly ever give you an A on a paper. She can sometimes be arrogant or condescending, but otherwise she is ok as far as her personality. Her class is easy but she doesn't seem to like giving out good grades, so you won't get the grade you deserve.
the class was soooooo boring....but overall it was very easy.... i didn't learn anything in this class but i don't need this class....she says attendence is mandatory but i showed up only when things were due and it didn't hurt me at all.....all you need to do is bs your way through the class and you will get at least a B
This class was not easy, but it was not hard either. The key to the class is making sure you pay attention to the class discussion. There are only two or three tests, a term paper and a panel presentation. A lot of the stories are interesting if you get into them, some are just boring. Overall, I would suggest taking this course.
I got B's on all of my papers (she refuses to give an A). I got an "A" on my final...guess what final grade she gave me--"C"..apparently she doesn't know what she is doing, don't waste your time or money.
Absolutely the worst teacher i have yet. She is not clear and I was in the class for 9 weeks before I dropped it because I did not have any clue what we were learning.
Absolutely the worst teacher! We were half way through the semester and ready to take the midterm and I had NO IDEA what I was even supposed to be learning. Horrible. Do not take her. And her voice is annoying.
Had no idea what we were learning in the class before I took the midterm. She is very unclear and her voice is nerve racking. do not take her.
do not take her class. she is condescending, boring, and repetitive. she will never let you out early, tells you right off the bat that she rarely gives A?s in the class and its true no matter how good your work is. the way she talks is irritating and monotone. SAVE YOURSELF!
Bring a pillow cause you will most likely fall asleep. I had no clue what was going on in the class. But some assignments were fun and interesting. Her grading is confusing and wack.
We sat there in a circle of cold-hard chairs, our eyes glued to the assigned reading of yesterday, hoping and praying that something of substance would jump out in case we were called upon, called upon those roaming inquisitive, yet seductive, blue eyes of hers... Seriously, I like Amberg. She's nice, helpful, smart, and responds to email fast.
Very boring class, sit in circle and discuss readings. Not a hard class. Mid tern and final are easy as long as you read. Dont get up and leave in the middle of class, or come in late, or make noise, or blink. Very strict, but not a difficult class.
Amberg is extrememly difficult to deal with. long winded, self absorbed, very boring classes
She has a loud piercing voice that is very long-winded and boring. She is nearly impossible to get an A because "there is no such thing as a perfect paper" which makes life very difficult. Avoid her at all costs.
The worst english professor i have ever had. Class is very boring. An extreme feminist that does not know how to grade.
She's the worst writing professor I've had. Granted, I've only had two...but still. She will screw you over in the last part of the semester and drop you an entire letter grade and refuse to listen to your plea to reconsider. and her voice makes it hard to sleep.
Very smart woman. I loved her American Lit class before 18th century-or something like that. Her Mid term was easy, and there were only 2 other assignments, which were pretty easy. Our whole class seemed like they got good/easy grades, so maybe she has changed since the previous reviews were writen. GIVE HER A CHANCE
She is a feminist, which bothered me in the beginning but it got less annoying as the class went on, like her voice. It's a lot of reading, which you can expect in a Lit course, but the way she explains everything, and if you take good notes, it was hardly necessary to read most of the time.I didn't enjoy it, but I didn't hate the class either.
This class is tough, she's a tough grader and there is a lot of writing. That being said, I learned a lot about my writing style and she was always helpful if I had a question. Make sure you go to class and participation is a must. If you are interested in improving your writing skills, take her. (If you just need a 3, take someone else!)
if you have a question her answer usually is"look it up in the book". I did not learn ANYTHING from her class. She is a tough grader. If you like a challenege i suggest this class if not definitely take someone else. The only good thing about her class is that she allows up to 5 absences no excuses are necessary before she takes off points
Really hard grader. Gives a lot of work more than twice the amount of most other classes. I would not take her unless you had to
She is extremely tough and does not explain projects in depth. Also, if you do not match her opinion and give much more than her question asks then you won't do too well.
Extremely hard grader, degraded me in front of class which was unprofessional, unclear on guidelines for project.
SO very very boring and you learn next to nothing the entire class. Don't waste your money. Wait to take another class with someone else.
On the first day of class, she said she didn't believe in giving out 100s because there is no such thing as a perfect paper. If there is no such thing as a perfect paper, it's not really fair for her to grade us on standards she apparently cannot even meet herself. I am a 98-100 student. The highest score I was able to get in her class was a 90.
Very inconsistent and unclear in her expectations. Extremely difficult grader. If you disagree with her, you will not do well.
tough grader. Lectures and discussion are boring. Questions--discussion, assignment, and on exams--tend to be vague and confusing. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about things that fall into her area of interest, but not outside of that. Nice lady overall, but not my favorite.
This class sucks so much; do not take with this professor.
Hard and slightly confusing, but she's a nice lady. :)
if you have a choice, do not take her as a professor. she is such a tough grader and doesn't explain projects at all. worst professor i've had.
I liked her, had her for Perspectives in Lit. We had to explore different theories in what we were reading, which was new and interesting for me. She was also helpful if I had any questions or a problem with a paper.
She assigns a lot of homework, is a tough grader and does not offer any kind of extra help. Be prepared to be miserable.
Expects you to answer her deep in depth questions and if you don't agree with her, prepare to fail. Homework isn't too bad but good luck answering her questions.
I had her for language and identity. Her voice is really monotone which makes lecture boring. Lots of papers and projects in this class and confusing grading criteria. She asks very general questions and laughs in your face when you say something she doesn't agree with. Randomly calls on people. Replies back to emails quickly
I have a mixed bag of reactions... She runs an interesting but work-heavy course. History, and lit blend with 1-3 hours of homework/reading every class. Lectures are often round-table discussions where you are expected to participate; they can drag on. Had 3 research projects and tests each, but not graded harsh. Keep up and don't get crushed...!
I think a lot of reviews are forgetting that this is a college course and that it's not meant to be easy. Amberg does assign a lot of reading materials, but her class discussions make it easier to understand. Participation is key with her, and if you don't you will fall behind. Show up, pay attention and you'll pass with ease. She really does care.
She really knows her literature--lots to learn from her!
Dr. Amberg truly wants her students to succeed. She encourages students to put forth effort and really digest the course material, which is something some may have difficulty with. If you have any degree of passion for literature or writing, don't be afraid to take one of her classes.
The class style is discussion, and she asks students about their opinion. I am an international student, and she takes care of me well.
Reading a lot of these comments is just sad. Makes me ashamed to have graduated from York. Yeah. Shes a tough grader. Yeah, her questions are hard and you have to read. Its college! Shes very intelligent and you can learn a ton from her if you actually put effort in. If you put in no work, of course you learn nothing. Thats how life works.
In her class, you wont get a rubric for ANYTHING and will just get random grades with no notes. She also always brings politics in class, even when a "fact" isnt even a real fact. I will never take a class with her again, Ill go to a community college or wait until a new professor takes the course.
She was just awful. If she doesnt like what you are writing about shell give you a bad grade even if she told you to pick to topic.
EXTREMELY tough grader
Dr. Amberg's class is enjoyable if you know what is expected of you. Since it is a communication course, there are many papers and one presentation that you will prepare throughout the semester. I found that the book is not necessary for understanding the course concepts. She also is very light on grading, and understands that this is a 100 course.
Expect a lot of reading, analysis, and carpal syndrome (joke). Her grading its really fair and the material is very clear. Available office hours. Random on asking questions. Also, expected to answer some questions during the semester.
