Alot of reading and writing. Attendance mandatory and class participation. All exams are essay questions and she assigns several essays in between exams. I didn't like the mandatory class participation and presentation. She assigns 3 textbooks that you are required to take to each class.
Her class is so difficult. I consider her class an english class instead of a history class. She took a lot of point in every essay test. Not easy to understand. DO NOT TAKE HER YOU WILL LOSE YOUR TIME.
Dialogue are quite interesting, however her in-class written exams are absurd and not sensible!!literally breaking the time down and problems asked to answer, gives about a minute a sentence to answer completely! Divide 3 selected questions by 1hr.10min and completed full with essay structure (5para.w/5 sent.each).No joke.I recommend someone else!!
This teacher really cares and has lot's of energy. Really smart and helpful. Lots of reading to do and makes you think alot in this class. You learn very interesting and important history.
Great teacher, great class... This is COLLEGE so do the work! You have to read and think. Tests are fair...no tricks. Conversation in class is very interesting and opens your mind...not for lazy or stupid students.
I loved the class. Good use of both books, you got your money worth. Very clear on subject, and class very structured. Attendance is mandatory, but if in a emergency then just let her know ahead of time. Test are hard, but not impossible, allows study guide so you must think. Papers were also hard but again doable. I highly recommend her class.
very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about subject. however, Readings in both assign books are required to have been read prior to class. And its a must, if not, u will be kickedout, and eventually fail the class. Attendance is mandatory. In-class exams are intense and unfair due to time given, and despite study guides. Writen essays are required!!
She is a fantastic teacher. She is super enthusiastic about History and she engages the students into her lecture. If you are interested in transferring she is there to help as well. Her test's aren't easy but if you do the reading and study the questions ahead of time you should be find. I got an A but i busted my butt! I recommend her!
Do not tak this class with her
Do the reading, come to class, Essay exams are easy if you do both. You can use outlines for essay exams, she offered a lot of extra credit opportunities If you dont take advantages of any of it then its YOUR lose. Very passionate professor and always listens to her students. I definitely recommend her.
she is a very passionate and intelligent professor. the books that are required are awesome & I plan on keeping them. her class/required books changed my views of the world. everyone should take her class, you will love it! :]
Read and you will pass. WARNING: essay exams. She makes you prepare for 6 essays, but only chooses two.
This class is very interesting but if you a person with a lot going on you'll have to make extra time to keep up with the read. Can't stress taking notes as you read enough.
She is absolutely wonderful. Her knowledge and passion for the subject keeps you fully engaged throughout the lecture. Attendance is mandatory, however, the readings along with her lecture makes you want to attend. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO COMPLETE THE READINGS! 3 books are assigned and must be read before class.
Best textbooks of any class I have ever taken. Professor Davis is passionate about the subject and really cares about your success. Tests are essay type. She gives 5 questions for you to work with and chooses 2 on the day of the test. Just read and participate and you will be fine. She really is an amazing teacher. This class changed my life.
Her class was the hardest history class I ever took. She is not easy going when it comes to exams, all her exams are essays ONLY. Very intimidating !
I loved this class!!!!! She is super helpful, but make sure you do the reading, if you do not have time DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Books for this class are amazing!
I LOVED THIS CLASS!!! Professor Julie is amazing and is extremely helpful, but get ready for lots of reading, if you do not have time for the reading, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Amazing teacher. Very passionate about the subject matter and the books are interesting. Class is not easy but if you read and contribute to the class discussion, you will be fine. Not for lazy students!
DO not take this class if you are not a reading person! Great professor but like i said if you are not into reading or history do not take it. She grades really hard. It was a mistake taking her class i regret it.
She is an amazing teacher, but she does not give away that A you have to really enjoy reading to take this class and if you fallow along with the readings you will do fine. 3 essay exams 2 quiz and 2 writing papers and the semester is over. Good Luck!
This is my favorite class I have ever taken! The texts really change your world view and open up your eyes beyond the mainstream textbooks we're used to. There's a lot of reading, but it is worth it! Keep up with the reading and everything goes a lot smoother since you can participate in the class discussions. David is enthusiastic in teaching!
DO YOUR READINGS! she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and its pretty much an easy class if you read. She grades somewhat more on the hard side for the essays but her class is great! Learned so much in her class.
she does not allow students to attend class without their text book or a copy Not a fun class and very boring at times. We read multiple books at the same time and the class got repetitive,I wish I would have dropped it.
I took this class kept up with the reading and she was over all the hardest teacher I've ever taken. She goes fast and expects you to fully understand her material because thats what college is. Teacher like her should want her students to succeed i get that you're enthusiastic about the topic but be that way about your students .
Julie Davis is an amazing, passionate professor! You can tell she loves what she does, and her enthusiasm rubs off on her students. The books for this class were AMAZING and - paired with her lectures - they changed my life and view of the world! The tests are a bit scary since it's just essay, but she does allow the use outlines you make before!
As unbiased as possible: The class is all lecture, and she bashes the US allot. I love hist. but at times because of the bashing it can get long. Upside: She is passionate for the sbjct, downside: she may begin to rantraise voice because of passionanger of the subj. The tests are Essays, no mult. choice. Personally i would't take the class again
Julie Davis is an amazing professor. She is very passionate about the subject and keeps you engaged. Beware, this class is not for lazy people. There is a lot to read, but in the end, you will be more knowledgeable and actually retain the material she teaches. She is truly a great professor.
cool teacher, passionate, your life will be consumed to reading the books if no read then automatic fail, essay tests are reasonable because you get to fill out a pg of notes in the blue test book and use on test its how you write the material is what she grades on, loves talking about slavery also in a good way.
Mrs. Davis is a tough teacher. Be prepared to do lots of reading and the quizzes are all essays. I wouldn't recommend her.
Her lectures are depressing. Your going to be reading 3 books in this class. All the exams are essay. Heed my advice unless you are a history major, it is best to consider other options.
Mrs. Davis was an exceptional instructor. She genuinely cared about the subject matter as well as the students. She was extremely knowledgeable about History (all aspects) and equipped her class to be as well. It was a pleasure to attend class every week.
Prof. Davis was so passionate about history that it was contagious! Awesome teacher!
Amazing Professor. History was not a subject I liked, but her lectures, text book choice, and passion for informing students made me love this class and subject. If you dislike: reading, lectures, participation, politics, multiple choice and written essays for exams and test, don't take class. If you want to be "enlightened " take her class!!!!!!!!
I always get A or B in my classes this is the hardest class ever I drop it because I got F on all my essays and especially with Julie because she is so tough and you don't know what she wants from you she is not clear I don't recommend .anyone to take classes with her.
Professor Davis is an amazing teacher! Yes you will definitely have to work for a good grade. You must read the material, I cannot stress this enough. If you don't keep up with the material or don't go to class, forget that A! Overall, Professor Davis is very passionate about history and it shows. Her lectures are amazing and very enlightening.
she was an exceptional instructor. Be prepared to do lots of reading and writing in the exams. Ms. Davis is very passionate about the subject and keeps you engaged; She was extremely knowledgeable about history sometimes seems a computer. The texts really change your world view and open up your eyes. WARNING: TOUGH GRADER, AMAZING AND ENLIGHTENING
Lots of reading, but very straight forward and tells you exactly what she wants. Very easy to talk to and always willing to help ! Don't be afraid to ask.
very knowledgeable
Professor Davis is a great teacher that instills confidence in her students. Her class is open discussion, so do not come to class unprepared or she will call you out ! Always there to help you if you have questions and very attentive in her office hours. IF I NEEDED THE CREDITS, I WOULD TAKE HER AGAIN.
Professor Davis is an amazing instructor. Her class is tough but worth it in the end. He lectures are inspirational.
The worst teacher I ever took in my WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE! Your grade consist of 3 essay exams and participation points. Her teaching style is horrible because she assigns 200 pages a week to read and you discuss what you read in class so your basically teaching yourself. The books she assigns are also really boring and hard to comprehend.
There is a lot of reading that goes along with the class. The reading is interesting if you understand it. There are three papers, three exams and two quizzes. You do have to do the reading in order to pass the class. Come to class prepared or she will call you out. Exams are essay format. Sometimes she speaks condescendingly. There are easier prof
Professor Davis is simply amazing! She is very strict when it comes to reading the material and discussion, but in the end you will learn so much about History that you didn't even know! She is passionate about the subject which sparks an interest in the reading material! I would definitely recommend her
Professor Julie is a teacher who will give you the grade you deserve, be ready to do the reading material, if you dont you probably will be left behind, syllabus have specified dates when it comes to exams, quizzes, and more. She offers a lot of extra credit too.
Good class if you liek reading, I did well. Just remember to read, if not do not take her. All exams are essays but if you do the readings you will pass. The class is a discussion of what you read.
Bad teacher. Doesn't give power points and is very hard.
There are three books you need which you can buy online for less than $20, but you really need to read. She doesn't do PowerPoint, but rather a discussion type lecture on the reading material. She gives every opportunity to pass the exams by having study sessions where she almost gives you the answers. You just need to be ready to put in work.
This class is going to CHANGE the way you see the history of our country. Julie Davis teaches this class very raw and detailed. She's an amazing teacher and I'm certain that she can teach this course better than any other. Yes, there is a bit of reading, but the lectures make up for it because their so interesting. TAKE THE CLASS! You'll love it.
If you're the type of person that doesn't keep up with the readings, don't even bother with this course. The class is discussion driven by the students with the professor's direction. The essay exams can be tough, but really only require basic analytical skills. Professor Davis is truly passionate about the course. This class changed my life!
Professor Davis is incredible. she will make sure you walk away from her class with a different outlook and better prepared for the rest of your undergraduate. There are three books, two are read simultaneously for the majority of the semester (about 30 pages from one and 10 from the other weekly) the third small book is read by itself at the end.
Terrible teacher don't take this class. Whole class is discussion based but you can't even record her discussions. You have to write super speed to keep up with her talking. Treats this class like high school. Very strict.
Very passionate about history. She truly loves what she does and cares about her students. I learned so much that I never knew before in her class, so I would recommend this. Definetly a lot of reading, but just stick with it and you will thank yourself. Go to her if you need help or just need to talk and she will gladly help you out!
Awesome professor. Very passionate about history but also very serious about it too. Bring textbooks every class, show up to class, participate, and do assigned reading (or she WILL roast in front of everyone for not reading). She does include writing portions for her tests, but as long as you read and have basic essay writing skills you're solid.
This class was one of the best history classes I have ever taken. Although you have a lot of assigned readings, it's fairly interesting. She loves the material and her lectures are very captivating. I highly recommend this professor if you enjoy reading and writing. There are no powerpoints in this class, but she does write notes on the board.
Prof. Davis is very passionate about history and teaches you real U.S history that is often ignored and forgotten about. We use 2 books throughout the whole class (inexpensive) and have discussions about the chapters in class. Just do the readings and go to class, and the exams will be easy for you. Shes also very willing to help outside of class!
Would not recommend. All tests are multiple choice and essay. And she grades the essay portion really hard as she expects you to go into full detail. Lectures are really inspiring but theres so much information its hard to remember
Makes you read a book that is hard to understand and expects you to give feedback on it and judges you if you dont know what it means, which most of the class said they didnt read it but really did t understand it
Professor Davis is one of the best professors I have ever had during my time at Cerritos. You must complete the readings before attending class as she will call on you randomly but they are very simple. The exams are multiple choice and essay and the answers are always what she emphasizes during class. Just do the reading and pay attention.
do not take this teacher, I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HER. Entire class is discussion based all the time and she does not allow any technology in class.
I enjoyed the class immensely. She teaches history they way it should be considering this is supposed to be a college level class. I Learned a lot.
This professor is extremely passionate about history, so she has high expectations for her students. If you dont like reading, wouldnt recommend because youre required to read two big books. She doesnt give you PowerPoints, classes are discussion based. If you pay attention in class and do the readings, you should be fine on exams.
dont take this professor she calls on you saying sir or mam instead of saying your name when it comes to a question if you dont know it she makes you say the answer and she also gets mad at anything for no reason dont take this her class there is other proffesors that have more patience than her.
DO NOTTT Take her classs she is a tough grader.. I was reading the reviews on her and I was like okayy ill give it a try worst mistake of my life.. plzz save your life by not taking this class please!!
not the best teacher in the world and is very rude and disrespectful
Straight Forward teaching, interesting class, she relates History to students lives and backgrounds. She teach me a lot more from what I was expecting. Organized class time and passionate for teaching. She cares about her students success and I loved taking this class for a history that is not boring at all!
Prof Davis was a great professor and one of my favorites that I took, ever here at this college. I would really recommend taking her if youre a student who wants a different history then high school history. She cares and WANTS her students to read and learn. Everything is always explained clearly too.
If you take this class get ready to fall in love with History, no kidding! Be prepare for learning a unknown world of the History of USA that I bet you've never heard before. From conquers to great fights, wars and voices that speak to you today, even they've died hundreds years ago. She will leave you hungry to learn more! DO THE READING!
Shes is really enthusiastic when teaching history because its something she loves. But she is by far the toughest grader ever. I recommend that people do not take this class because she is super picky especially on the essays. If you want an easy A, dont take this class. Hardest class Ive ever taken.
Best teacher. She loves the subject! Very interesting history here! Test are based on readings and class notes. Test is clear and fair. Attendance is crucial. Do the extra credit for more help with the test grade. Follow directions, support the idea in writing and, you will do well. Must take in cass notes. Love her passion!
Professor Davis is one of my favorite, she is very caring and passionate about history. I love listening to her lectures and class discussions are very interesting. Make sure to do the reading and take notes. Also make sure to go over all the study guide questions and use a note card for essays.
She is a tough grader, but if you just do the readings and pay attention in class passing is not a problem. She loves her subject and I truly enjoyed the class. She outlines the essays for you and is open to reading your outlines prior to the exams. Yes you have to work for the grade, but that's what college is about.
This was a hard semester, stressful, the covid thing, but Prof Davis was there for me and for us and Her passion stayed SO strong, and we even were bought books by HER! She even had a Black Panther show up on Zoom to talk to US about them! She tells real the history of The People. This IS real social justice history. Amazing class.
Had her in spring 2018 i dropped out cause i wasn't doing so well but still a great professor i still recommend taking her
If you don't like reading DO NOT TAKE this class. Hard to pass! Must understand the material but its really hard to understand this type of history. She calls on you and expects you to know the answer or she'll make you look dumb. I didn't like showing up to class just for that reason alone. You only get graded on tests so be ready to study.
loved this class. What a phenomenon professor! I strongly recommend her. You will learn alot without a doubt. This class shows the PEOPLEs history and not the boring bs taught in high school! Class does requires reading and studying. Take notes and meet her on Zoom she is SO willing to help! LOTS of extra credit to! THANKS Davis, "stay safe"!
She knows her stuff! Just pay attention, read and take good notes and do EC and youll pass. She's great. Real passion for civil rights and for US history.
I absolutely enjoyed this class. During this mandatory online format, Professor Davis makes it feel like an actual class. You can see and hear that she is passionate about the subject matter and makes the lectures more lively with that passion. Reading is required as you will be called on at random and information from lectures will be on the tests
Shes a really great professor & like many said, she is super passionate about this subject. From the start I had a difficult time with the class & waited till the last minute in the semester to ask for the help that I needed. TONS of reading, she will call you out in class, be super detailed in the essay portion of the exam BE PREPARED!!
Do not take this class. She is very picky on essays and would get mad if you come to the zoom meetings with knowledge of the readings you have to do before class meetings
Great professor first time I managed to stay awake in a history class, shes really helpful and her lectures are interesting, you have to study for her tests and if you read the required readings you will do good!
Professor Davis is great professor who is willing to help any student out. She really explains her essays and tests so it is all clear. Do the readings and take good notes. The lectures are amazing and there is a passion for history that she shares which is really important in history especially. Take her you won't regret it.
I took her class online and overall I really loved her course! She is really straightforward with what she is asking of the students prior to class meetings! She explains things well and if you dont understand she will gladly help you!
She is a great professor, yet very difficult for me personally. There is a lot of reading and exams are essay format so very hard if you dont read.
Great class, great teacher, not boring lectures. Loves to have class discussions to get our brains going and thinking different ways about history. Very passionate & involved of the topics discussed. Make sure to attend class & participation. She loves for you to communicate in class. Extra credit is good and lots of it.
This Prof is awesome. Shes very intriguing to hear when giving lectures you can tell shes passionate about what she does. Makes history interesting and the books she assigns are vibe! She gives you a chance for many extra credits and is nice in office hours no cap
Davis is reallly good teacher. Enjoyed taking her class. She lets us students talk about how history impacts their lives. Great discussions about racism, women and woke stuff :) She's kind and cares about yur learning. You'll learn alot with lots of extra cred too!!
Very easy course. As long as you read the textbooks, and take detail notes you will past all the tests. She is very open to questions concerns and topics. Highly recommend.
Great class, if you read the books and participate in discussions you will pass
lectures were great, manageable work and really cares about what she's teaching. Gets us thinking in discussion i was so shook. She was easy to get a hold of , if you were ever confused or need clarification
Reading is a lot but the exams are easy if you prepare, tbh I did;t use a notecard :( but you can. Prof is chill and helpful
As long as you do not fall behind on the reading you'll be fine. Don't take if you have social anxiety.
I would not recommend this class, your grade depends on the four exams you take but she doesn't really test you on what you read, she expects you to do research outside the class regarding the topics as her study guides don't even cover what's on the exams. She also likes to call on people and kick them out of the class.
There is three required textbooks only hardcopies she does not allow any electronics in lecture. In the beginning of the semester there was 28 students; now there is 9 remaining.
Great Hist Prof I learned from a never boring class and you can tell she loves the material I admir that. 3 tests & 2 papers Extra credit? Yaaass
I enjoyed her method of teaching. Davis is clear and realistic with the class. I have recommended prof Davis to a friend and she was pleased and recommended to. Study guides and extra credit with 4 exams & extra credit points for talking!
At UCR now as a criminal justice major and just finished my race & social control class which was a breeze after taking Hist 103 with Prof Davis. Glad I took the class before I transferred. 4 tests, quizzes and a few papers. This class really prepares you and interesting lectures. Take this class its on point for SO many majors and life.
This professor can be helpful for criminal justice or history majors. This class as your general study is way to difficult and will consume a heavy amount of your time. Also she is not afraid on disrespecting you and just a overall negative expirence with 3 books you have to buy.
The class grade revolves around the exams given throughout the semester. There is a lot of reading given for homework, and if you didn't read then she wants you out of the class. She also interrupts her own lectures by telling students to put their phones away, it honestly feels like high school again. Don't take this class, it's difficult.
Great teacher! Encourage us to talk about topics we might not get to talk about any where else. Read and prepare the study guide before the exams. I just did that and so far I'm having a very high grade.
Its ALOT of reading that she will expect u to get done in a day, she assigns 2 books u have to read at the same time and theyre both alot of reading. u have to remember every little detail about the books or else shell embarrass u in front of the class. Interesting topics talked about but shes way too harsh on students and not understanding at all.
She keep history interesting and relevant. She explained everything in detail and we learned history through actual primary sources and great lectures about the people. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities as well!
Lots of reading but super interesting. 4 exams with short essays and two ez papers. Professor is willing to spend a lot of time in office hours to help prep you for exams. Class was a lot of discussion which was sometimes challenging for me being shy but good.
one of the best teachers I have had at Cerritos . she is not hard she is simply teaching the basics that everyone should know. she makes it interesting. read so you have something to talk about. knows a lot of history and cares about it and wants you to learn.
Easily my favorite professor in all of community college!!!!
makes you buy 3 books , 2 discussion papers that have to be read infront of the whole class , she only gives you 3 chances to be absent , if you have social anxiety don't take this class she calls on people everyday to see if they actually read the 2 books for hw , she's super old school and stern
Enjoyed the class and it took me out of my comforty zone which isn't easy but its what I need, as my counselor and parent said. The readings interesting and you won't find no surprises on tests which I do appreciate. Extra credit helped alot.
Good class and good teacher, a recommend for me! Extra credit is not hard and same goose for tests and using note cards is highly recommended.
I took this class for my GED. The instructor is passionate and makes history engaging but expects detailed answers and often calls on students waiting until they respond. You'll read three books and four exams determine your grade. If you enjoy history and don't mind being called on, take it. Otherwise, especially as a busy student avoid it.
Great teacher. Really gives a s*** about learning and college life. Show up and participate and do the reading, and pay attention to what's on the test, and you will be fine. Just dont bring out your cell phone, she gets really sensitive about that.
Great history class! The professor is passionate and makes lectures engaging. While the workload is manageable, staying on top of the readings and participating in discussions is key. For extra study help, Unstuck ai proved really useful alongside the textbooks.
This class is mostly for future history teachers. I dropped the class because I didn't like her teaching method. She also calls on you to answer questions about the books in front of the class, so I do not recommend it if you have social anxiety like me lol.
Mrs. Davis talks to her students as if they are children. There is so much reading and what is in the books doesn't match her lecture. Mixed flags about her and the way she teaches. I dropped her class after about 1 1/2 months because the reading makes zero sense to me. I personally don't recommend her at all.
Very engaging instructor, excellent lectures. Passionate n interesting. Clear knowledge of the the topics and subjects n great at making clear explanations, with use of the board. It is all clear what you have to do n when and how to do it, unlike some other profs at this school who r all over the place.
Davis is full of energy and knowledge. Inspiring class feel. Three books, tests, attendance is a must, take notes, read, extra credit, discuss and I never felt like sleeping, which is a big plus. Would definitely take again if I had to take one more history class would take with her.
P.Davis she okay, but all the readings and the work is very too much, her grading is very strict and she forces her students to read and answer her questions when you in the class, Her exam is also strict and you most likely have do the best you can or get a bad grade. So I won't take this class again. So strict and Misunderstanding!!
Don't get me wrong this is a very good professor educational wise, but she is veryyyy rude. If she assumes you don't do the work she WILL pick on you for the entire semester, if you show up late, she will give you nasty and dirty looks. I felt very targeted and picked on in her class although I did do my work.
History 102 changed my world and now I am starting UCLA as an American Indian Studies major! Read everything! Exams are clear with decent study guides and extra credit is available all semester but you have to check canvas. Thx for the experience Davis!
Professor Davis has a passion for teaching history, she want to be sure that students do history writing and not just opinion BS and to read and learn. she is giving of her time and helps student with how to prepare for exam writings. I highly recommend.
This class was so interesting even tho there was alot of reading. Loved born on the 4th and will not forget the class discussions with my colleagues IYKYK Civil rights is where it is at now TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Professor Davis is chill
Took the class last spring, did good, wasn't bored for the first time in history. Quizzes and exams with no tricks or crazy questions. Highly recommend. Do the EC!
Professor Davis is very knowing and understanding and actual cares about you and want to help you learn on how to become better at history! Grading is fair and good feedback on each essay. There a lot of reading, books she assign have a lot but class discussion helps you.
Will not hesitate to pick on and embarrass students during lectures about the heavy reading material. Do not take this class if you have a class before her, she will give you looks if late and in general, not a very understanding or patient prof. I did all my work as expected and had two sick days, and still will get targeted. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Read, participate, engage, take notes, don't miss assignments and show up on time and you pass and its all good. Truly recommend for a history class which can be torture but not her class!
I couldn't of asked for a better professor for a class I wasn't really looking forward to. Everything is straightforward and clear. Take notes. EC is offered and she will definitely review your drafts. Thumbs up
Smart and passionate professor! The A is doable as long as you put in the work so you have to read and participate.
Professor Julie Davis is a fun teacher to be around and you can tell by her lectures that she has a real passion for history and doesn't mind helping people get further information on a topic. Participation is big and reading is important for tests. As long as you do the readings, its an easy A on tests.
Best history professor I've had so far! Assigned readings are pretty long, but worth your time. Extra credit is offered. Very engaging history class I've had in a while. Other than that very easy and smooth class.
She one of the worse professor I ever taken! I dropped out on the 4th week and she is rude and strict! Never again!!! AND WARING!! IF YOU ARE SCARED TO TALK AND READ IN THE CLASS THEN DONT TAKE I REPEAT DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Really appreciated how this history class was taught. didn't feel one sided and prof actually lets ppl talk, lots of voices heard, discussions were interesting and good class overall.
