She is a professor that shows sincere respect for her students and expects the same from you. Her quizzes are doable if you do the readings and her tests are not that hard if you do the study guide. She also gives opportunity for extra credit. It is a bit of work with weekly journals but it is managable. Overall, I would definitely recommend her.

This woman is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had! She genuinely wants the class to not only become better communicators, but she wants them to get a good grade as well. Shes has office hours to answer any and all questions or just to chat. Take her class if you can!

Awesome professor. First professor I've had that genuinely cares about each of her students individually and gives fantastic feedback on every assignment. Do all the Journal entries! She is really nice and actually cares that you do well, if she sees that you are struggling, she will ask if you want extra credit, but it will be hard, but well worth it.

She assigns readings for almost every class, but then goes over the lectures too. Posts lecture notes online which are very helpful when studying. LOVED LOVED LOVED this class and her.

She's so incredibly nice and eager to help students if they're having difficulties. Fantastic class, only kind of tricky part was the terminology, which just takes some studying for you to really learn for the tests and the final.

She has quizzes on each chapter in class worth 10 points that are multiple choice, 3 speeches, lectures are boring, she really cares and is very understanding.

Quizzes/worksheets for every chapter, a few tests, and 3 speeches make up most of your grade. A tough grader and lectures are dry. Fortunately detailed lecture notes are provided online for every chapter and she makes up for the dryness by being nice and an interesting person. Makes the best with the GCOM course requirements.

Dr. Gochenour was very helpful, especially when I got sick and missed a few days of class. The class content was boring, but that is how GCOM is. There are 3 online, open-book tests, but it is helpful if you understand the material ahead of time. One of the nicest teachers at JMU, highly highly recommend.

Gochenour is the best. I got sick on the day of my speech and came to her office hours in tears running a fever and she excused me from class for the week. She really cares about her students and only wants you to do well. The quizzes are from the test bank and they suck, just read. The online textbook website helps too!

Dr. Gochenour is a tough but fair teacher. She outlines exactly what you need to do to do well in the class, and if you work at it, you can do well. She's also incredibly friendly and sweet, and she is open and welcoming for students to come get extra help at office hours.

She is very understanding and has a passion for communication. Follow her directions and have a good posture when you present. There is three different presentations: Personal, Informative and persuasive. She is there to help. Make sure you talk to her after class if you are shy or have stage fright. She will give you breathing pointers and etc.

3 speeches. Read the text book to pass the quizzes. Gives brutal feedback but it does help you. Grades harshly on lectures but there is a guideline on how to give speeches so don't complain if you didn't get certain amount of points. She is really cool and is a great person. Talk to her if you are struggling and she will be there for you.

I was terrified to take this class, but Gochenour was THE BEST. She respects her students so well. She makes class interesting, knows all of her students, is SO nice. She has quizzes, and 3 online open note tests, extra credit opportunities, and 3 speeches. TAKE GOCHENOUR. You won't look at communication the same after this class.

Loved Dr. Gochenour! She's one of my favorite professors and is kindest women you'll meet. She genuinely cares about all her students. Gocheneur is such a nice professor, and she's very helpful and understanding. 3 speeches and 3 tests (open note, online, unlimited attempts), and a few easy reading quizzes in the beginning. Helpful, informative, and very clear on what she wants, Dr. Gochenour is a teacher you'll want for Individual Presentations. Expect to dress well for speeches, but there are only three a semester, and they're pretty clear- cut. She obviously enjoys her job, and that's refreshing. The class isn't hard, I'd recommend taking it with Gochenour 100%.

Very few test and they were all online. Handful of quizzes. However expect a lot of assignments. Weekly facebook post are graded and you must have your speeches reviewed at the communication center. Dr. Gochenour (pronounced go-ken-nower) is the sweetest and kindest professor I know! The class will challenge your public speaking and stage presence, as well as your everyday social skills. PREPARE for the final exam, it is the most difficult task (the same exam for all SCOM classes). Otherwise, the class was phenomenal, and she makes it home!

Like everyone, I hated public speaking but Dr. Gochenour makes it not so bad. Tests are an easy 100% because you have multiple attempts online. You can skip class three times without penalty. She is very understanding. One of the best professors I've had!

I really enjoyed her as a person and a teacher most of the time. She makes it clear what she expects and treats you as equals which is great. However, when grading speeches comes around I do feel like her style is outdated. You must stand perfectly still, don't look at the screen (even when using the laser?), and limit all movement.

Dr. Gochenour is a prime example of not judging a book by its cover. I was struck with fear upon seeing her large syllabus and got flashbacks to a grumpy elem. school teacher on the first day of class. Nope, she is sweet, knowledgeable and helpful. She only does 122/Indv and tends to have evening classes but they are worth it. Material isn't hard.

I love her. She takes the time to get to know everyone's names and she makes the class fun. I felt relived to go to this class like we were all just hanging out. quizes are easy and she basically promised our class we would all get A's because she liked us. She is so nice to talk to and to listen to. TAKE HER BEST CHOICE EVER.

If you need to take this class for your freshman scom class then definitely take her. All of the tests are online and you can retake them as many times as you want. Very easy grader in terms of speeches and so helpful when you need it! Dr. G is so sweet and you'll definitely get an A if you put even the slightest bit of effort into the class.

Shes by far my favorite professor Ive had at JMU. She is so kind and sweet. Her grading is a little tough but she gives good feedback. I took a night class and she made me excited to come to class. 10/10 teacher.

Dr G. takes a dry course and really teaches it with excitement. She is a truly wonderful person and genuinely cares about each of her students. She gives lots of worksheets and three major speeches but as long as you participate you should be fine. She is awesome and I definitely recommend her.

Dr. G is my favorite professor, hands down. She loves her job and it shows in every lecture she gives. Her passion for teaching is reflected in how she grades, too. She gives wonderful feedback and is very understanding when it comes to outside circumstances. She has some strict classroom rules but as long as you don't be a headass, you'll be fine.

Everybody NEEDS to take this class. Three interview projects, two online exams, and a couple miscellaneous assignments. I would cry laughing in class half the time. Dr. G cares so much about her students and makes everyone feel special. I can't say enough nice things about this woman.

I would DIE for Julie Gochenour. She is so caring, flexible, and understanding. Her lectures can be dry at times but she spices it up with funny stories. The class improved by public speaking and speech prep by a mile. My printer broke before a speech one time and she didn't count it against me. I can't recommend her enough!

I took her for SCOM 122 and it was very easy and enjoyable. She cares a lot about her students and just wants them to pass and is extremely understanding. The speeches were graded fairly and she gave very good feedback. She lectures a lot when it isnt speech days but overall, I would take her again and not even for credit honestly.

Dr G is super understanding and is the sweetest lady ever. She will know everyones name by the end of the first week. It is required that you go to the communication center before your first speech, which seemed annoying at the time, but it was really useful. Also all test are open note and you can take them twice. Highly recommend this class!

Dr. G was the highlight of my first semester & is such a caring woman who loves communication & it's contagious. A few tests & quizzes (open book w multiple attempts) & light homework. Got a 95 on the exam w/ a lot of studying. 3 speeches, all fairly graded. So willing to work with you & really cares about you as a student - definitely take her!!

She literally takes time to send an email at the beginning of each week with everything that's due, and she gives you two attempts for each test (plus they're online). There's about 2 extra credit assignments that sum up to about 40 points, so even though she is a slow grader there is a lot of chances. TAKE HER!

I got high Bs on my presentation and a low B on the final & completed all assignments to the best of my ability and ended up with a 97 in the course! Just keep in mind that she takes awhile to grade things onto Canvas. Love her!

Great option for SCOM 122! I signed up for her class based on these ratings. Online tests and quizzes based on the textbook and lectures, gives you 2 tries!! Gives super specific criteria and feedback for speeches. Did not enjoy when the rest of the class was online though....

Dr. G is one of my favorite professors! She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. The class consists of a few online tests, three speeches, a few homework assignments, and a final exam. As long as you prepare for your speeches, you should be solid. Her lectures are fun too! I highly recommend this class with Dr. G.

Dr. G is so caring and very accessible outside of class. I've sent her a number of emails and she her responses are always thoughtful and helpful. She also hosts WebEx meetings every so often like when we have a speech due which are helpful as you can get one-on-one help and feedback without having to correspond solely through email.

dr g was so nice and the class environment was immaculate. 3 individual speeches required with lots of little group assignments. super easy to pass if you pay attention and participate. just dont skip out on any of your speeches! make sure to communicate with dr g and you will pass.

If you've got a situation, just email her and let her know and she'll work with you to figure something out. Her lectures are a bit boring but the tests are open note and as long as you put some effort into your 3 speeches you'll do fine.

She makes the classroom environment so safe and gives so much extra credit so even if you don't do amazing on the speeches you can still get a high A.

Individual SCOM is a difficult class so be prepared to be working outside of class a lot but I highly recommend her as your professor if you take it.

lectures every class but you don't even have to pay attention. all exams are open book and are super easy/common sense. nicest woman in the world and is so understanding about everything! cancelled class a good amount too! attendance is mandatory and you have 3 absences and if you get past that you fail so just show up!

Dr. G is an awesome teacher, the class is easy if you like public speaking, moderately difficult if not, but you have so so many extra credit chances, it's genuinely hard to do bad. Love this class.

I love Dr G so much. Attendance is mandatory but she gives you 3 excused and if you need more she is willing to work with you. There are 3 open note exams that you have 2 attempts for. There are 3 speeches but she is very understanding about nerves and public speaking. Dr G is so sweet and interested in how you are and is always there for you.

I loved her as a prof. She cares so much and respects her students a lot. She wasn't a super hard grader and gives so many extra credit opportunities. Her tests are open notes/book and you get 2 tries.

dr. G has been AWESOME. she's super flexible with people's schedules, allowing us to come to other classes if we can't make our scheduled one. lots of lectures, but she makes them super interactive and interesting. she assigns three speeches and provides so many valuable resources to ensure success amongst all of her students. such a great prof!!!!

Dr G. is just so sweet, she may be a little strict grading wise, & you do have to do 3 speeches, but if you talk to her & get to know her she's the sweetest professor I've had! 3 open note tests + 1 closed note final. Make sure to attend class & don't use phone during class. I really feared public speaking but with Dr. G this class became my fav!

Take SCOM with Dr. G! She is the best professor I have. She makes her lectures interesting so it's not bad at all. You have to actually try to get a bad grade in this class, but at the same time you're learning a lot. She's so sweet and super flexible if you have to miss class or miss an assignment. I will never stop recommending her.

A great teacher. Definitely take her if you have the option. Three speeches, with clear guidelines and she is a light grader with tons of cushion points so you should be fine and only fail if you do absolutely nothing. Attendance is only mandatory for speech days but highly encouraged on others (easy lectures as well, so just go to class!)

Prof G was great! Online SCOM requires 3 speeches and a few online tests, which weren't bad at all. The tests are open note and she encourages us to use all of our resources. She expects a lot from the speeches. Prof G was very flexible with attendance and is a very sweet person overall.

I absolutely loved this class and her as a person and professor. I would recommend her class to anyone!

Professor G is one of my favorite professors I have ever had at JMU. She is very sweet and really wants you to succeed in her class. She makes it very easy to get a good grade as long as you show up and do her assignments. She is very easy to talk to and overall just an amazing person.

TAKE HER! This class is great! Dr. G wants students to be successful and her class is set up for this. If you participate and follow her directions, you will pass with no problem. She is such a sweet lady and really cares about her students. Highly recommend!!

Dr. G is awesome! She is such a caring and thoughtful professor. She wants you to do your best in the class but she really is a pretty easygoing grader and it is not hard to do well in the class. Her lectures can drag on but she has let class out early numerous times and she is very funny!

BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Dr. G is nothing but helpful, kind, and funny! Three tests, which are all open note and available to retake, and three speeches, which she provides lots of resources for. Lectures can be boring but she makes them so funny and engaging. She genuinely cares for every one of her students and I cannot recommend her enough!

Dr. G really cares a lot about her students. She makes it clear what you need to do to get the A and gives you every opportunity to get it. Will meet with you a lot out of class to help you with your speech outline. It's genuinely hard to get lower than an A- in this class. Great professor and easy gen ed.

Dr. G is by far the best professor at JMU! She really cares about you and your needs, and will help you to succeed in her class. In fact, her class is set up so that one assignment does not hurt your grade. Lectures at the beginning, and then small group work for the rest. Three tests, and they were open note. I recommend this class for anyone!

Tests are online and you have two weeks outside of class to complete them, but can be a little confusing if you don't pay attention to the lectures or skim the text book. Take her!

Amazing professor who genuinely cares about her students. Class is easy and you're given two weeks (& two attempts) for exams, and no requirements for speech topics; you can choose anything. No hats/phones/food and attendance is graded but this class is 100% worth it. Getting a bad grade isn't possible. Take this class!!!

Dr. G was a caring, kind and funny professor. In addition to being personable, she always wanted her students to succeed. She would provide extra credit, give feedback on everything, and genuinely wanted to know what you had to present and say. I would take her time and time again!! Favorite professor as a freshman by far!

Dr. G is genuinely so kind, caring and overall one of the sweetest professors! The lectures can be boring at times, but she does a great job of engaging her students and making them as best as possible. The one thing is that there were a lot of assignments due through the SCOM center, but Dr. G puts them under modules so they can be easy to miss.

Dr. G may seem strict at first, but she really wants you to succeed. She gives lots of extra credit and is willing to work with you and be flexible as long as you communicate with her. I cannot stress enough how amazing Dr. G and what a great professor she is. Definitely take her for SCOM because as long as you turn in your work, it's hard to fail.

Dr. G was great--she is willing to help you, but you must communicate your needs beforehand. The final exam was stressful but not bad--if you pay attention to her lectures & slides in class, all her little anecdotes & examples will return as you use her study guide for the final. She really and truly is a phenomenal professor and kind.

I LOVED DR. G! Such a sweet woman, really knows how to speak to an audience. gets to know everyone's names, gives you everything you need to pass. I didn't really pay attention in class but it didn't matter. attendance mandatory so bring laptop or sketchpad. Shes super old school, but its fine. she cares ab students, and is v interesting

Wonderful, understanding professor. I came into this class dreading the topic, but she made this class a much easier lift. Knowledgeable on the topic of speech-giving down to the finest detail, and understands the problems people have with it. This, along with her empathy, makes her lectures and grading criteria very clear, fair, and practical.

I LOVED her! She was super kind and while the class was lecture-heavy, she made sure that it was interesting. 3 total speeches needed to be made. 3 total tests which were online, open notes, and open for around 2 weeks.. Very little homework besides speeches. 10/10 Would totally recommend!

Extremely kind and helpful. She is great with accommodating students who missed assignments or were sick. The only problem keeping it from a 5-star rating is the general disorganization of material and that there were a lot of unpredictable times where she'll be absent when we are working on a huge project.

Dr. Gochenour is really sweet and truly wants all her students to succeed. Public speaking can be scary, but she will work with you individually if you ask.

She cares and loves each of her students. She is helpful and is always there if you need her when doing your speeches. All she wants is you to succeed so put in the effort. I recommend her!!!

Dr. G made a class that I dreaded taking pretty simple. She cares a lot about the students and even in an online setting she took time during attendance to ask how we were. She sometimes ran out of time in the class periods but never went overtime. Just don't procrastinate all the speeches until the last minute like I did. Would recommend.

Dr. G is such a caring professor, it's hard to not like her. She is always there for her students when needed, and she is extremely understanding about absences as long as you notify her in time with her policy. She even brings presents in for her students from time to time. Easy grader. Loved her and will miss her class.

Ok so she's a great professor but my social anxiety could not lol. She is very clear about what she wants from your speeches and is pretty funny. She gives engaging lectures and herself is a great speaker. There's almost no homework besides working on the speeches. You can take the tests up to two times and see what you got wrong on the previous.

Dr. G is one of the best professors I have had the pleasure of having at JMU. She is genuinely so nice and shows her care for her students. I took her class last semester and as an SCOM major she still checks in on me to see how I am doing. Take her, you won't regret it!!!

Dr. G is so nice, and although I had a difficult semester in many ways she worked with me and made sure I was able to succeed in her class. She makes an effort to learn everyone's names and truly wants her students to succeed in every day. Class weighted to make sure no single aspect will sink your grade (like if you're terrible at speeches).

Dr. G was very kind and showed passion about communication through her lectures. She puts effort into getting to know each student, and tries to make it as enjoyable as possible. Tests are online and she gives you a long period of time to do them.

She truly wants her students to succeed and sets up assignments and exams for your benefit. They are online, open note, and open for ~2 weeks. The presentations can be demanding, but she is a stickler for time. If you go outside the grace period, your speech will be docked significantly. As long as you follow the rubric & practice, you'll succeed.

Dr. G is an amazing professor who believes that the student's role is just as important as the professor's. She's on your side and wants everyone to get an A. She takes the time to get to know each student. Textbook was provided through Canvas and all 3 tests are open book with multiple attempts. I'm not sure it gets better than Dr. Gochenour!

This class is honestly impossible to fail. Dr. G is super forgiving and kind and her grading scale gives you so much leeway. You have to go to class on Mondays but Wednesdays are asynchronous and you record all your speeches and send them to her. Lots of funny activities to help public speaking skills. She also let us out 30 minutes early yesterday

Dr. G truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. All of her tests and quizzes are open note. This was a hybrid course, so we had in person class on Mondays and asynchronous on Wednesdays. All speeches were recorded and tuned in online, however time consuming. Overall, you should do well if you try and follow the rubrics.

Favorite professor and such sweet person who means good! I had an asynchronous class where attendance was mandatory on the in person day (3 are excused) and no class on the synchronous day. There were three exams (online/open note) & a final in the computer lab. She is very understanding when it comes to grading, so ask for help! I highly recommend

Professor G is such a sweet lady. Her class was asynchronous which we didn't find that out until the first class, but it ended up working out. Theres a big final at the end that all JMU students have to take which is very hard in my opinion but if you review the review slides she gives you then you will be fine.

Very sweet and caring, def tries to make a connection with the students. Every big assignment was online, speeches had easy rubrics and gives two tries on every exam. Takes attendance every class though, important to show up.

Dr. G is not just an amazing professor but an amazing person. She will tell you on the first day of class that she is there for us and she sticks to it. She makes class very enjoyable and is very understanding. Loved her class.

Dr. G is the nicest professor I've had yet, and she cares deeply about all of her students. She's very clear about the expectations for speeches, which you record yourself, and is accommadating to any worries voiced by the class. 3 online tests you take on your own time, one final, and 3 speeches.

Sweetest woman ever. Super easy way to get your SCOM credit. Class meets once a week, 3 speeches, 3 online open note exams and then the final. She offers a bunch of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester and grades quickly. I currently have over a 100 in the class.Really cares about her students, can be slightly unorganized at times.

Dr G might be the nicest person you've ever met. She grades everything very fairly. Despite being individual, you will still have small groups, but they aren't super important to any assignment. She's not tech savvy whatsoever so be patient. Also she's not very good at names, be ready for her to call you the wrong name. Very nice though,Good class!

So nice and caring, genuinely wants her students to succeed. She gives so many extra credit opportunities, and is very accommodating to students' needs. Obviously, SCOM has a lot of work in general, but take her class! Also, half asynchronous, which is so nice because you can get the work done as early as you want. Midterms are open note online.

Can be a little old fashioned, but if you set up a meeting with her one-on-one she's very accommodating and willing to help.

Dr.Gochenour is a very sweet lady. Despite it being an online class, she made sure to know all of her students by name and keep everyone engaged. She is very understanding about mistakes and gives plenty of opportunities to boost your grade if needed. Her classes aren't very long but they're well structured. SCOM center is very helpful also!

Genuinely cares a lot about bout you!! I took her class over zoom once a week and she would always bring so much energy to the class. Coursework is incredibly easy with a few major speeches and online tests, and online quizzes every week. Group assignments every now and then, very easy and not stressful, biggest recommendation.

If you get the chance TAKE THIS CLASS. Easiest A of my life and she's super funny and loves a good conversation. Assignments are pretty easy and she sometimes does group work during the zooms.

The sweetest woman ever. She is SO caring and understanding, I only had her class once a week via zoom but she still showed that she truly cared for all of us and brought so much energy to every class. Assignments are all super easy and as long as you do it on time, put in decent effort, and attend class- you will get an A. Take this class!!!!

Dr. G is amazing! She is strict with her grading but is super caring and WANTS her students to succeed. She also grade relatively quick and answers emails even quicker. She is a awesome professor.

Easiest class of your life. She is so nice to her students and gives them 2 chances on their tests. If you miss one of them she will allow you to take it again but you must also do a makeup assignment.
