Took intro to developmental science, I liked her, the lectures were really clear and she followed the book pretty well. Exams straightforward as long as you've gone to lecture and read. Gives out thorough study guides before exams.
Go to class and stay on top of your notes and you will have no problem. Class is not curved though.
Nice prof.Lectures very clear, sticks to the book really well.Exams are straightforward. As long as you pay attention in lecture and READ the textbook, Intro to Dev. Science is an easy A.
Lectures are boring and most days- a big waste of time as long as you read the book. She offers extra credit in lecture. She sticks to the book and exams are simple if you know your stuff. Very easy, you just have to read the book, a lot of it in common sense though.
I liked Dr. Gros-Louis. Lectures were boring, but they are necessary to go to. She follows the book closely.
Lectures are boring! She uses a lot of lecture material for tests. I wouldn't recommend her, but a good teacher assistant helps.
Lectures were very boring, went through material way too fast. Spends 10 minutes talking about something she says she wont talk about at all. Made us leave in groups after tests. I would not recommend any class she teaches, especially this intro to developmental science (child development)
Her lectures are boring and she goes through the info too fast; there's a lot of reading and stupid quizzes and debates. The tests are confusing and unclear. Wouldn't really recommend her. Make sure you read the book. Gives EC in lecture.
I didn't think she bad at all. You had to attend lecture because that's the only way you could get the notes, but it was a fairly simple class. The discussion sections sucked because of the quizzes, but they weren't usually that hard. You just have to keep up with your reading! The tests were over stuff in lecture and in the book...
I enjoyed this class for the most part. She is good lecturer (sometimes goes a little fast) but overall I enjoyed listening. I found the material to be interesting. Exams aren't too bad, do require a couple hours of studying but if you attend lecture and study from those notes and read the book you'll be fine!
I thought the lectures were very straight forward and concise for the amount of material covered. Though she went through fast, she was very clear on what she was going to test on, and as long as you do the reading you should be fine. Discussion however, is pointless except for quizzes. Easy class.
Good teacher, fair tests... recommended
Horrible time management. she is always a lecture or two behind and will put material she doesn't get to in lecture on test. Material in lecture was very straight-forward but tests were horribly written and very confusing. Book would probably be helpful but is not necessary to get an A
Great class. The tests are easy and she presents almost anything you would ever need to know in lecture. Complemented with the basic terms out of the book, its easy. Discussion is pretty much useless, and the papers are stupid, but getting an A in the class is easy.
Worst professor I've had at the University of Iowa but the class was one of the easiest. That being said, you must teach yourself. Lectures are pointless except for the clicker questions. Didn't learn a thing.
Gros-Louis is not a good professor. She is very unorganized and the lectures are a complete mess. That being said, Developmental Science is a very easy course. Bad professor, easy class.
I would not recommend this class if you are taking it with Julie. Her lectures are extremely unorganized and she jumps around. Her exams are very tough and do not reflect what she covers in lecture.
Good professor, lectures are sometimes boring. But as long as you pay attention in lecture you will do well on the exams.
Her lectures are incredibly boring, but she gives extra credit if you show up (clicker questions). The tests are super easy as long as you attend class and maybe study for a few hours. Boring class, but easy.
Her class is boring and lectures are all over the place. She is nice. She gives lots of extra credit. Must read book to do well on tests.
Tests are hard but she gives a lot of extra credit
Easier material, lecture heavy. Listen to what she says in lecture 80% of that is on exams. Easy A.
gonna be completely honest & admit that i made to to maybe 3 lectures all semester. all of the material is in the book. take notes on the readings and afterwards take notes on the slides. Havent gotten lower than a 95% on an exam yet! Shes also really nice & funny. Shes cool, I'd just rather teach myself out of laziness lol
The content of this class (developmental science) is not difficult, but the way that Dr. Gros-Louis presented the material made it a lot more difficult that it should have been. Lectures were SUPER unorganized and boring, and barely covered book material. Must read book to do well on exams.
Lectures were rambling and confusing, I just read the book at home, and I got 100% on the exams. She over complicated simple concepts. The discussion section was mostly busy work. We had one paper. The guidelines stated points would be docked for going over two pages, yet they wanted a novel's worth of content. Overall, an irritating experience.
Dr. Gros-Louis is caring and very helpful. She always starts the class with memes and uses meaningful experiments to get her point across. He exams are straight forward and you don't have to read to do well. Go to class and use office hours. Getting to know Julie is a huge plus in taking her class too.
I took Dev Psych just to have another class with Julie. Her lectures are sometimes disorganized, but she does a great job of explaining what's expected of her students. She really cares about your success and will take extra time to work with you until you understand the topics. I'd take another class with her if I could, she's a real gem.
Prof Gros-Louis is such a sweet and caring person, but this class was very hard in my opinion. There were 4 exams, discussion boards every week that included a quiz or assignment, you were expected to read a chapter every week as well as attend lecture and there's a paper as well that's worth quite a bit of points.
I love Prof. G-L! Her lectures can sometimes seem disorganized, and you really need to read the textbook and research articles to do well on exams. However, course content got way more interesting (and easier IMO) as it went along, and Prof. G-L stands out as one of the most caring professors on campus. Would recommend!
Everything she covered was in the book, so going to lecture was pretty optional. I tried so hard on her exams and did poorly. Her lectures were not organized and confused me. Very frustrating class for me
Julia is a very nice teacher and posts funny stuff every week. Where I take issue with the class is the testing. I spent hours every week taking notes out of the book and covering lectures to only get a C average on every test. Discussion assignments are boring to read and more busy work than anything. Get ready to struggle.
Her tests were hard, I got 70% on all of them. Her lectures are very disorganized and hard to follow.
I had Julie for Advanced Psych for the MCAT and I LOVED the class and her. Material was not hard to learn and most people did well on exams. Attendance is not mandatory but there are clicker questions. The book is online. The exams were pretty chill and didn't cover a ton of information. She is so caring and will go out of her way to meet with you!
Very disorganized and test questions are based around research studies discussed in class, not psychological concepts. Terrible professor, worst I have had at the University of Iowa yet.
I took abnormal psych and it was pretty easy. The class is straightforward, expectations are clear. I would look at the lectures but if you read the book and take good notes then its not super necessary. There are a couple extra credit assignments to help you if you do bad on a test.
I liked her lectures (even w/ online!) & she seems like such a sweet woman. Had to read the textbook for the exams but she gave a studyguide w/ topics to focus on & sample q's. The q's at the end of each chapter in the book were helpful tooHad multiple extra credit opps & little assignments for disc that were easy points to help boost your grade
I felt as if Julie was unorganized as a teacher, delaying when assignments would be posted etc. She tends to talk quiet a bit, but she is so sweet and genuine. Great lady and a good explainer; she can over-explain and end up being confusing. Emailing the TA is smarter because she tends to not answer. She also has extra credit chances after tests
Julie is a genuinely nice person but pretty disorganized. It was hard to know where in the syllabus we were, since she kept jumping around and falling behind it. There is a ton of reading, be prepared to read two chapters in the textbook each week, plus a study for discussion. Lecture attendance aren't mandatory, but discussion is.
Gros-Louis is a wonderful human being! She takes the time to personally connect and get to know her students. There is quite a bit of work in the class, but she tries her best to space it out. Gros-Louis is easily one of my favorite professors!
Shes nice and lectures are interesting. they are straight from the textbook so you dont really have to read. sometimes she gets a little off track and then u have to watch the lectures on your own time which can be annoying. exams were online and open note, so if you took good notes during lecture you are gold
This class was easy, the only problem was the 70 question exams with a lot of trick questions. You should definitely read the book if you want to get a good score on the exams. Overall, not that demanding of a class. Just study for the exams.
I love this Prof. Great lectures, and also great Teaching Assistants who teach your discussion section. 2 papers, which the TAs grade, just follow the directions and you'll be fine. Not graded on a curve, it is criterion-referenced grading. Very organized. Everything else has been addressed by other reviewers. Online lectures, in-person discussion.
The class should be easy, but the prof is making it difficult and complicated. idk how she get paid for making students teach themselves from the textbook. Tests are very difficult. She talks a lot until the last second class ends even though she wastes 5 minutes when class starts showing us TikTok about dogs. Discussion classes are useless.
Notes she gives in lecture are absolutely useless on the tests, test questions are specific and notes are so surface level. Tests are extremely hard to do well on, there are things on there that we barely talked about in class or answers don't line up with definitions given to us. Most frustrating class I've taken.
She is a nice lady and I can tell she is passionate about what she teaches. However, you NEED to read the textbook. She will talk about most topics in lecture, but she mainly brushes over concepts, so to get that deeper understanding, reading and taking notes on your own time is needed. Tests are open note, but don't rely on that. STUDY FOR THEM.
WORST professor I have ever had!!!!! I would never take one of her classes again. She likes to ramble about irrelevant topics that do not relate to the exams or the actual knowledge we need. She does not relate with her students or help them to better understand the content we are learning. I can not believe how difficult she makes this class.
Highly recommend adv psy for pre-med if you are taking MCAT soon!! Genuinely cares about students. I thought her exams were too difficult, and not really focused on content covered, but still manageable. Must read textbook to do well on exams, but book is actually interesting. EC available. Lecture not recorded and says stuff not on slides.
the exams are worded horribly. she always shows a tiktok at the beginning of class. loves to blab
Tests seem extremely harder than practice exam and study guides make them out to be. Exam questions are confusing to read. She tries to brighten our day up by showing us a tik tok (appreciated), but then ends up running out of time. A very nice woman with obvious experience but the tests will be hard. She's good at explaining things too
The tests are very difficult. Professor goes on tangents during lecture unrelated to course content. Discussion section is your friend, but I would not recommend taking her for elementary pysch, she makes this class very difficult.
Julie is a kind person and her love for psychology shows through her enthusiasm in lectures. While she is nice, the exams are very hard. You can review and study the lecture slides as much as you want, but the tests are always more difficult because you have to apply the information you studied. She also gives multiple options for extra credit.
Exams are extremely difficult. Everything from book and lecture is fair game for tests. Discussion was the only thing that got me through. Read the book and do the inquizitives.
The tests are incredibly thorough. Things only described in lectures are often added to the tests, meaning if you miss a lecture even if you go to discussion, do the reading, and check the PowerPoint you'll still be missing information. That being said, Julie cares very much about her course and tries very hard to connect with her students.
Lecture is boring but if you take notes the exams will not be bad. Definitely read the textbook or at least organize the vocab words, and use the study guide for the exams to have your notes organized. Exams are online and open note so not terrible. There are two papers which are graded harshly so be sure to proof read and check rubric.
to be successful, go to the lectures, and basically make a transcript of everything she says, but you need to be able to pick out the right pieces for what you think you'll need to know for the exams, which can be tricky. Also, going to discussion is very important for this course. Overall, this teacher is cool and cares about what she does.
This class was a so easy, except for the exams. Attendance isn't graded at all and lecture slides are posted online. However, a lot of people complained about the hard exams, but if you take good book notes and take good notes in lecture (on what she's saying vs what's on the slides) you'll do just fine. Would definitely recommend this professor.
I really liked Professor Gros- Louis. Her tests are online which was really nice and open book. They line up with lectures really well but make sure you either go to the lecture or read the book because she expands off the slides and you'll need to know that stuff for the test. The tests were long but not bad at all.
Julie is a great person and very accommodating to the students who need it. I do believe that she doesn't always use lecture time efficiently, but she gives students a reason to look forward to her class: watch TikToks of animals.
Prof. Gros-Louis was pretty good overall. She was sort of confusing in lecture, and going really didn't help me at all. Your best bet is to just go over the lecture slides and learn the material on your own; however, she does give extra credit, and the class really isn't that hard. Lots of content though and only 3 tests BUT open note.
Good lecturer, would show tik toks at the beginning of every lecture to brighten the mood. Some people didn't like it but I did :) My discussion had attendance taken, but not sure if everyone did. You have to go do psych studies on your own time to pass the class, but they aren't hard at all. Exams were online and open book/open note but difficult
I did not have a personal issue with her. During lecture she only read the slides out. The discussion section was the same and there was never any real discussion.
I liked Prof. Gros- Louis but PSY:1001 is a horrible course- she is super sweet and loves to have fun convos with everyone during lectures- Everybody in that class took psych classes in high school but got terrible grades from this course- all exams are just memorizing 200 words of vocab, it sucks- TAKE GROS-LOUIS BUT DEF NOT PSY:1001!!
I know a lot of people who just stopped going to the lectures because they were useless. She read off the slides and blamed us for failing our exams, and we learned more in the discussions rather than lectures. The exams did not cover the material learned in class and she always had to curve the exams because 'we were the problem.'
For everyone hating you should be thankful that she curves every test to average 80%. Prof was really nice and has good lectures. I liked the tiktoks at the beginning of each lecture. Discussion is a must go if you want to have any idea of whats going on tho. Read the book, dont forget to do the inquizitives, and go to lecture and youll be fine.
I would not recommend this class, she is a nice person but as a a teacher I would recommend someone else. She is kind and thoughtful but material and course wise she is not that good. She rarely reminds students about things, the lectures are not like the exams, the discussions are not either it is just another lecture but mandatory.
The class exams used to be online and open note/book but isn't anymore. It is very lecture heavy but it does not correlate to the exams. She does not teach that clearly, the reason why she curves the class so much is because not a lot of people are succeeding which is due to her teaching. She didn't transfer from online to in person reaching well.
Great lecturer, but my only issue was the course itself. My most difficult intro level class and for what... Discussion was literally lecture 2.0 and falling behind is so easy. Make sure you actually read the book because its the most useful tool in this vocab heavy class.
good professor, always taught clearly and was easy to understand, also laid put clear expectations for what to know for exams. supplied good practice for exams with practices that were only graded on completion, so basically free points.
Julie seems kind as a person. However, she rarely reminds her students when assignments are due, and neither does my TA. The "discussion" for this class is just a lecture 2.0. If this class is not required or related to your major, I wouldn't recommend it. It is difficult for an intro-level class. If you do not study, you will fall behind.
I had Julie for elementary psych and developmental science. I cannot stress it enough when I say that she is by far my favorite professor. You can tell that she cares so much about her students and she wants to see them do well. She is very clear on what you need to do in order to get a grade that you desire. TOTALLY RECOMMEND!!
Super lenient about assignments and very caring. lectures were a little bit boring but she made up for it by showing us tiktoks about her dogs
Pretty basic class, harder than I was expecting for a 1001 course. The lectures are difficult to follow sometimes and SO info heavy while the exams are big on vocab and don't include much from lecture or disc. 3 exams and 2 papers, and a good bit of online hw. Discussion attendance is mandatory and its pretty boring.
Sometimes she gets a little distracted during lecture and her lecture slides can be confusing so going to class is definitley mandatory but she offers easyyy extra credit and is super caring
Julie is a great person, but her lectures were very broad and would go on tangents about random things. This class I wouldn't say is difficult but very boring. The exams are very curved, which does help, otherwise you probably won't learn much. Take if needed, but wouldn't really recommend it if you don't have too.
Lectures aren't required but definitely help. Inquizatives are graded on completion and are relatively quick. Would recommend.
She would go on tangents during lecture, but was very specific on which material would be tested and explains things nicely. The tangents are meant to help you understand better, but I would understand if someone said they were boring. Easy class, but lots of content to digest, don't take if you don't need to.
She often goes off on tangents that were very unhelpful and just ate up time. There was nothing engaging about this course, and I often had to learn on my own. Definitely don't take this course of you don't have to.
She is very nice but tends to glaze over points of her own lecture slides. She also tends to run behind schedule and topics sometimes get brushed over when getting close to an exam. The final isn't cumulative which is nice.
She is very nice but learned nothing from the lecture. The test has a heavy curve bc everyone does bad. So much material to even learn on your own its hard to keep up. Definitely not hard to get an A it's just hard to know the material so you are depending on the curve going into tests. Not a great feeling coming from someone w/ test anxiety :/
She is nice overall, just a difficult class. The readings were the absolute worst because of how lengthy each chapter is. Because lecture is only 2x/week, there is a lot of content in each lecture so she only gives you the basic understanding of it. To truly grasp a topic, I had to read the textbook. I found flashcards to be very helpful for studyi
Dr. Gros-Louis is a very compassionate professor and truly wants you to do well. Her elementary psych course isn't too difficult if you just go to lecture and listen. Discussion is more of a second lecture but it isn't very content heavy. She is also reasonable and adjusts things throughout the course as needed.
This is a pretty easy class if you put minimal effort into it. Skim the textbook and do inquizitives and you're pretty much set. Attendance is required in discussions, but we were often let out early.
Julie is a good lecturer who cares about the class. The discussions are pretty much worthless, but attendance is mandatory (discussion is lecture pt. 2). The tests aren't the easiest, but if you study ahead of time, you will be fine.
I liked her class, I thought it was interesting. My TA (Paige Harlan) was amazing and helpful. I will note that she is hard to reach via email, but if you go up to her in class she is super nice. I recommend reading the textbook along with the notes, since some of the test questions are on topics that weren't discussed in lecture
She is such a nice person but the exams were hard! She says that everything in lecture and the textbook is fair game for the exam which makes sense, but the study guides were not very helpful to me. Some of the exam questions were also very obscure, so it was hard to know what to study.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. G-L and I must say, I like the format less than when there was an in-person element. Though there are still lots of extra credit opportunities and you can tell she cares about students, lecture content is disorganized and homework/discussions can feel like busywork. Prepare to mostly learn independently.
She lies about what will and will not be on the exams.
Gros-Louis seems like a very nice woman who genuinely cares about her students and what she is teaching. The exams were lowkey hard, but they are heavily curved and many other opportunities are given to raise your grade. You get 2 quizzes dropped and can miss discussion twice without losing points. 2 essays assigned that were super easy.
She is a really nice person, her class can be fun but the tests are worded so weirdly and so many people fail them its crazy. there are only 2 writing assignments that are graded easy. the tests are the only really hard thing but lecture is not mandatory and she gives extra credit before each exam, and curves them
Julie seems like a very nice woman, her slides are a little bit all over the place, and she tends to go off track in class. If you want to do well in this class, I would recommend doing extra notes outside of class from the textbook. She is very clear that everything is fair game on the exams. The essays and discussions were very easy too.
Lectures were terrible. She would constantly discuss things not on the exam and then run out of time for the actual exam material. The exams were also nothing like the practice exam, and she had to curve all of them because everyone did so badly. She seemed very nice and caring, but I started skipping lectures because they just confused me more.
Very sweet, but her lectures were hard to follow, and I ended up skipping most of them. Very vague expectations for exams - her study guide is a list of vocabulary and a few practice questions, but says "all lectures and everything in the textbook is fair game." You will need to use the textbook and study on your own to be prepared.
Julie is very sweet! However, what's actually learned in class/readings doesn't align with the material on the exams. The exam questions are worded poorly and even if you study with all of the materials given (lecture slides, book, inquizitives) the tests are difficult. You can do poorly on exams without totally bombing the course, though.
