She is a very nice teacher but is very unfamiliar with the O.C.C's set-up. She is also docking kids 2 points for leaving in the middle of class, which she doesnt have the right to do.
Very good teacher. Attend class, pay attention, do the practice problems, and you will do fine. She was also very helpful.
Very good teacher. Too many people were leaving class in the middle so she started docking points. I agree with it 100%. She is clear but can get loud because she gets excited about math. I would suggest her to people who like to attend class and actually want learn.
AMAZING!She is an awesome math teacher!I had absolutely NO interest in algebra. But after Julie's classes,I want to learn more! Her grading is VERY fair, & I am all for the docking of points for leaving. And she will let you take a test if you miss it. But you have to take it before she gives them back to the class.I'm taking any classes she teaches!!
I loveddddddd her!!! This is my second year at OCC and she is my FAVORITE teacher yet. she explains everything very well and will not make you feel stupid for asking questions. She is so sweet and bubbly and made class fun.
I took this professor previously and was very excited to have her again. I left a comment here that was fantastic but she has changed. She moves too fast and has handed back a failing test while laughing. She doesn't even try to help you if you don't understand it.
she is the worst teacher ever! she teaches the worst way possible and does not know how to teach. she will NEVER help you with anything she will just laugh if you ask a question and HATES when you ask questions. DO NOT TAKE HER YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!
Grades too harshly ... i had to drop her class. With just a little mistake and u get litle or no credit for the question. Please do not take her class, or u will definately regret it.
Isn't helpful at all, laughs when she is asked ANY question and makes the student feel dumb like their question is unworthy. She is sarcastic, rude and it seems like she doesn't care how her students do in this class. I regret taking this teacher, I guarentee you will feel the same way. My class began with 30 and ended with less then half, A JOKE!
A very bad teacher, she doesnt teach any short cuts and is honestly very rude and inconsiderate of the other people in the room. I would recommend that no one ever takes this course, she honestly is just looking to fail you. My class with her was the worst experience i have ever had with a math teacher before and i really feel that she is the worst
Mrs. Gunkelman is a good teacher. She got me through algebra 1050 with an A- I never took a single Algebra class in H.S. I would recomend her to anyone.
She is very helpfull. she goes kind of fast but there is a lot to cover in one semester. i recomend you don't take math classes in the summer because it goes even faster. but Mrs. gunk is a very fun and helpfull teacher that keeps you focused.
This teacher talks very fast and grades very harshly. she also doesnt except very many questions. She will also laugh at the student asking a question. she is the worst math teacher I have had. i would not recomend her to anyone
great teacher! i would reccomend her to anyone! she's fun, and easy to understand.
just attend class and youll do good
Great Teacher she makes math FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We call her Dory(Finding Nemo) and she does not care she actually laughs at it.
Very kind professor, very enthusiastic and has a definite passion for teaching math. She puts forth a good effort to make the class fun. However, she is very fast paced, and if math isn't something you had recent practice in, you may struggle. Tests are very difficult.
Mrs.Gunkelman is the best math teacher I've ever had. She is very hyper and loud but it makes you involved with the class. She does group activities to help you meet students and help each other out. I definitely recommend her
Great teacher. You can tell she really loves the subject. Also she offers a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Best teacher ever! Recommended!!!
Mrs.G is honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. I took her twice. She's so funny and makes math so much easier and even a little fun. She lets you make up tests and late work. I highly, highly recommend her.
Good teacher and all and all but if you struggle in math then she is not the teacher even though she has a lot of extra credit but what good is that when she is hard on tests
I donâ??t understand why people say she is a bad teacher. I had her last semester and she was great!!!! We have to remember that she only has so much time to teach the material, which needs to be completed before the end of the semester.
Mrs. Gunkleman is such a wonderful teacher. She is the sweetest woman and so silly. Makes math a little fun for you. She moves really fast though so if your not that great with math you may want to take someone else.
'Gunk' as she calls herself is a horrible teacher. I have never used this site before but I am so disappointed in her teaching I needed to let you know. She does not teach and simply flies through the material expecting you to know everything already. If you have questions, don't bother, she LAUGHS at you and moves on. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE!!!!!!!
Was really nice first but she covered the last chapter by so fast, we were sitting in the class and didn't know what was going on. Exams are way harder than her notice and the homework. she gives extra credit and 20 worksheets and a lot of class work to practice and also 10 or 11 quizzes. final exam worth 200 and 5 exams each one worth 100
Gunkelman is so hilarious! she makes Math really fun. you would not even need a calculator for her class because she will teach you how to not use one. definitely a class to take to prepare you for math 1100
Ive taken her online for trigonometry beforeand that was fine, except no in class meetings before final exam. But this calculus class was supposed to be an in class course, but it was exactly like the online course, and she filled the time with stupid in group problems that not many people got, and then she would speed through it aswell.
if you pay attention, you will understand everything.
Hated this math class. But I took the hybrid so I made it extra hard on myself. Mrs. Gunk is hilarious and really nice but the class was really hard.
... You're better off taking an online math class. Which is basically what you're doing when taking class with her. She doesn't really help out in class. Tbh.. but she was a nice person.. just not a good professor. You're basically teaching yourself. If math is not your strong suit. DONT TAKE HER!
The BEST teacher. She is so full of energy. FUN lectures!! I have never actually liked math class until this. I received an A without even buying the book, but I warn you to not make that mistake some test questions can be extremely tricky. Make sure you're studying. No extra credit. She does give partial credit for wrong answers which is great.
Don't listen to reviews. She doesn't even teach you have to go home and watch her youtube videos since she doesn't teach the material in class. Total waste of time especially when you can't use your calculator on most quizzes and tests too. Just be fare warned before you sign up
All of the lectures are online, but she does several practice problems in class that prepare you for the quizzes and tests. Calculator use is limited in this class because we are supposed to KNOW the material not just rely on our calculator, so don't expect the easy way out. Overall she's a fantastic teacher and I wish I could take her for calc.
Did College Algebra and Trig with her. My absolute favorite Math teacher so far! At the beginning of the semester, she worked hard to build energy in the room. By the end, everyone was so engaged, she was hard put to keep control of it. Homework is very light. Do your part and you will walk away with an easy A.
WARNING! Nice person, funny, but doesn't teach. She does group activities in class that hardly review the YouTube videos you were supposed to watch at home. It provides zero opportunity for us students to stop her while teaching to ask questions. I strongly recommend that you do NOT take her class unless you're good at teaching yourself math.
Terrible, this teacher gives study guides that don't represent what's actually on the test along with a lot of insanely over complicated internet assignments.
Honestly, she is a mediocre teacher at best. She relies too heavily on her videos and she does not update them. She needs to be less energetic and use that towards actually teaching. She does way too much group work. Would not recommend unless you like to watch videos and do group work in a math class.
Run Worst Professor EVER!!! Her study guides don't match the test.. She does not teach and goes to fast to answer question.. She will string you along so you wont drop her class and then fail you!! All the while telling you don't worry about it! She is straight up awful! Don't let that ADD personality fool you! RUN
quiz or test every week, but she gives good lectures.
Mrs. "Gunk" would be a great 3rd grade math teacher but she is not acceptable for college teaching. All of the material she wants you to learn is online and then she has you do silly group assignments in the very short time period that she has. These group assignments were not helpful and were in most cases a complete waste of time. Save yourself.
Loved her class, she knows how to make the class fun and easy to understand. I would love to take her for my other math class but she doesn't teach it. She will make you work with others in class.
Mrs. Gunkleman is probably one of the most amazing professors at OCC. I have always struggled with math, but with Mrs.G/Quantitative Reasoning I get As! Our class is 4 hours long but I look forward to it b/c we have FUN! We sit in groups and discuss the problems. Do all of the work for this class and you will do well. It's 4 credits for a reason.
Mrs. Gunkelman is hilarious and enthusiastic! She makes any day feel amazing, especially when you're doing math! Tough grader but prepares students well. Very accessible outside of class and willing to clarify difficult concepts. Group work is important, but not terrible, especially when she turns on her jams. My favorite math professor!
Gunkelman is the worst math teacher I have ever had. I am good at math, and I barely passed her class with a C. She teaches primarily online with youtube video notes and in class all you do it put together a notebook. She constantly gets off topic and is always losing track of time, which then forces us to be rushed and adds to the stress.
Mrs.G was the worst professor I've ever had. Her class is based on youtube videos that she makes you watch on your own time. Basically it's and online course, the only thing you come to class for is to fill out a notebook with flash cards and tape worksheets to it. She doesn't teach in class, and is always running out of time so she rushes teaching
she was great. About half the people dropped her class but overall she was a amazing, caring prof. she gives hw, quizzes (take home and in class), and extra credit if you do this notebook book of notes thing. also you sit in groups which surprisingly was enjoyable. i would take her again, as long as you do the work you will be fine.
She has her youtube videos online that you have to watch on your spare & they do not explain well. All we do in class is a note book for extra credit. Half of my math class already drop this course. Do not take this class unless you know how to do math already. I would not recommend her class. What a waste of money and time for this class!!
she is very hilarious, kind, and makes the class enjoyable. the only extra credit is the notebook. this class is mostly working on your own but there a couple group projects. excel assignments are the worst if you've never used it before. attendance isn't mandatory unless you want the E.C. book is required. help if you get a free math tutor.
Mrs. gunk is funny, and a very nice lady. Expect the class is basically ALL online. Lots of homework. Her YouTube videos dont really help at all, and she BARELY teaches in class. Its kind of like Im teaching myself. I dont recommend.
this is literally the worst teacher to have if you have anything else going on in life other than her class. majority of the work she teaches is online and in class your only filling out a notebook as extra credit. goes too fast to really ask question. definitely would recommend if this is your first time taking the math your signing up for.
Really nice and can be funny but honestly she is a terrible teacher. Her class is like arts and crafts with the amount of cutting, tapping, and creating of this stupid notebook that could easily be done by simply writing the information down. She moves super fast and really doesnt allow for any time to catch up. Skip her and find someone better.
Mrs. Gunkelman is one of the best teachers I know, She teaches in the flipped style, meaning you take notes at home from videos and have an opportunity in class t ask questions as you work thru what would normally be homework. You will enjoy the class and learn if you actually try. If you are lost ask for help and she will help you.
Mrs. Gunkelman is an amazing personality. Her energy is amazing and she's super kind. Class is flipped, so notes are done at home and in class, you fill out a notebook that ends up being worth 20 EC points at end of semester. Only buy the book's access code, she requires it. She usually gives vague answers to questions which is her only real issue.
Be prepared for lots of homework. Had her for math 1125, she is good. And it you go to 90% of her classes the journal is worth 20 points extra. Which is a plus cause that journal is annoying to keep up with. Long weekends doing homework!
Great teacher, havent taken a math class in years and it was my first semester in college. She was so welcoming, friendly, and really has a passion for what she teaches. There is a lot of homework and you really need to know the material to do well on test. She goes over everything in class and the notebook makes it so much easier to study
I'm currently taking this class. Professor Gunkelman is perfectly nice and explains things relatively well. However, the work load for this class is excessive. I can safely say I spend more time a week on this class than my other two classes combined. It has caused me a tremendous amount of stress. If you're short on time, don't take this class.
Love Gunkelman as a person! She is so sweet and kind and really makes math class fun. As far as the actual class goes- i hate it. The prep work is nearly impossible, you have hours of connect homework (which is also impossible bc you have to get the correct answer to get any credit), and we hardly do any actual math in class. You teach yourself :(
You really teach yourself everything, you might as well take an online class. You have three different steps to learn one thing and you still don't know what you're doing after because she doesn't teach. she copies off her notebook from last year and messes up her notes most of the time anyways. My class had 5 people left after everyone dropped.
I have taken 55 credits at occ and Julie Gunkleman is by far the worst professor Ive had. The only teaching she does is 10-20 min pre recorded videos that arent helpful. She doesnt teach in class or even answer questions if you have any. SI does more teaching than she does. If you take this class, be prepared for tons of HW and self teaching.
Mrs. Gunkelman was very nice and welcoming each day. Morning classes can be slow, but her optimistic attitude helps to keep things moving. Its advised that when coming to her class, you should expect a fairly high workload. Keeping up with all assignments & getting at least a B+ on tests can ensure a good final grade. An overall good teacher.
I had Julie for Quantitative Reasoning this past fall. She has a good sense of humor and is a decent professor. She assigned us online homework, so youll need the access code for the textbook. As long as you pay attention, participate, and get the homework done. Youll pass this class without a doubt.
Class was a waste of time honestly. The SI sessions taught more than Gunkelman ever did. The notebook is 20 extra credit point towards your test grade. You have to have 90% attendance to be able to turn your notebook in for credit. You will teach yourself in this class as she doesnt explain anything. 3-7 assignments per night. No study guides ever
Mrs gunk is a great teacher, the only thing you need to watch out for is if you missed class or slack off you wont pass. Overall shes a really good teacher and an amazing person she also gives you extra credit if you do her notebook
If you are more of a right brain not so great at math person, I recommend her. Yes, there is a "scrap book" but its extra credit, not mandatory and there is science behind why she does it. She's very friendly. My only complaint is that the assignments are due before you learn them in class and there is a lot of homework.
I'm taking this class because I have to. I was taking a summer course and because of the coronavirus, class was online so I don't know if she's different in person. I regret taking it. She posts so many things on D2L and on email and it is almost impossible to keep up. She teaches way too fast. She also makes too many mistakes and it's confusing.
MAT1525: There is alot of work, but its a math class what do you expect. Im not good at math and by doing the work i managed to get an A. it was tedious and time consuming, but its practical math and will be useful later. Prof was very helpful and nice. Must use the EBOOK to watch the did you get it videos to understand how to use the book.
Let me start by saying that I am a 50-something-year-old student. I haven't had a math class of any sort in 25 years. SHE is a math whiz, funny and caring. This is a BACKWARDS class-You teach the material to yourself, then she goes over it with you. This is BY DESIGN- so be aware. A LOT of moving parts to her class-LOTS of work. Skip class FAIL.
Gunkelman is a great person and let me submit online work a few minutes after the dropbox would close(we had 10 minutes to scan and submit handwritten work for tests and quizzes. She won't actually teach in class, expects you to learn from video notes and she will put you in groups for a weekly quiz. Don't take her class online. She'd be better f2f
This is a self-teaching class. She puts you into groups 3-4 times every class and expects everyone to have the classwork done and correct. Her video notes help, but when it comes to studying for the exams, it's a bit difficult because the material is switched around and not similar to what we practice. She also has a lot of assignments due.
Gunk is great if you're not a math person, her teaching style is very un-math like. If you're very liner you may not appreciate her as much because you do make sort of a math scrapbook (which is actually extra credit) . I had her for 1050 and 1125 . She's very nice and patient. I'm awful at math and I think I got B's in both her classes.
Professor Gunkelman is a nice lady, though I disagree with her teaching style. It was flipped classroom, so you would learn the material at home and then do problems in class. When I would ask for help she wouldn't help me solve the equations, instead she would tell me that I know how to do it, and figure it out. I wouldn't recommend taking her!
Gunk was a nice lady but the teaching wasn't good. She teaches very little and expects our math background to help us throughout this class.
Professor Gunkelman is a pretty good teacher, in my opinion. I don't enjoy math, but she makes it so much more tolerable. There is a lot of homework, but I find it doable, though others may disagree with that statement. Going to class is mandatory if you want to understand the material. I enjoyed her thoroughly, and glad she was my final math prof.
She gives out over 10 assignments each week. Doesn't really offer her students help and treats us like kids
Flipped class where you learn at home and do worksheet problems in class. She will go over the problems on the worksheets but a little difficult to get help when a topic is unclear. Sometimes she just makes a joke and moves on which can be frustrating when you're confused. However, overall she was a good teacher and caring.
Best I've ever done in a math class! Textbook work is the hardest part, but classwork and homework are easy to learn and well explained. Never felt nervous going to taking a test in either of her quantitative reasoning classes. All homework is uploaded first day over D2L and can be completed in advance (serious luxury.) BEST math professor at OCC.
the gunk gunks. She's fine. Decent teacher. She's very kind! Attendance is very mandatory. It's a math class so expect difficulty. She is contactable outside of class. LOTS of homework, but its math, so what can you do. Quizzes every Wednesday, but they are a communal group affair. The tests are difficult, but fair if you studied. Fine proffessor.
I love Gunk, I will miss her. Her class IS FLIPPED, so you are expected to go over the content BEFORE class, during class she gives out worksheets and answers questions. I prefer this over lecture when it comes to math classes, but not everyone does. The ALEKS homework she assigns can be frustrating at times. She also drops a few low scores.
Worst I have ever done in a math class. She expects you to know everything before coming to class. Expects people to memorize full pages of formulas and equations. She can be very snippy and is not open to students asking questions. I felt like an outsider in her class because I was struggling.
This is my last semester. I need this class to graduate she was the only professor at Orchard to teach this class, if I can even call it teaching. She has no time management or respect for her students time. You are teaching yourself & could be teaching yourself completely wrong & you will not even know it. If you CAN avoid taking her then do it.
She can be funny and the class overall was tolerable. For the final exam (which is 20% of your entire grade) She failed me for being late due to my usual exit off of 696 being closed and had to take a detour that made me over a half hour late. Expect to do only math outside of class as she assigns 10+ things a week.
shes a great lady, but not a great teacher. she has a super nice fun personality but the way her class is organized, its not easy to learn, she expects you to teach everything yourself outside of the classroom with multiple assignments a week. i like math and I found this class hard to learn because she barely did any teaching.
Her teaching method just doesn't work for a lot of people. She teaches her college level classes like it's high school. Her tests are complicated and annoying. If you get behind, miss a few classes, you're kinda screwed. She should offer test retakes, study guides, literally anything other than massive amounts of homework.
I've never gotten below an A in any math class EVER. DO NOT TAKE HER! Not only does she not teach at all (this class is flipped and her videos are AWFUL), she's rude when people have questions. She's aware of which students are falling behind but gives all her attention to the ones that excel. Miss more than 2 classes and your grade will PLUMMET.
Definitely have to teach yourself, if you struggle with math I'd advise you to not take this teacher. It's a flipped classroom. Doesn't really help students that are struggling, she just expects you to know what you're doing without guidance prior to.
