Wow. Before our first test she said that it sucked cause she was new and we didn't know how to take her tests, then said that she wasn't going to tell us how to. Kind of arrogant. Seems like she likes to make you feel incompetent.
Started out fun with alot of discussions, then we got a little behind and now I dread coming b/c she just lectures the whole time. Tests are pretty hard but not impossible, gives review on WebCT, but I think nearly half the class failed the first exam anyways. Nice to look at but seems arrogant.
Her tests are hard if you don't study, but she gives you a very detailed review sheet and has a review session the class before the test where she tells you what to expect on it. All her notes are on WebCT. She's not boring at all, and if you do the reviews you'll make an A.
This teacher expects a lot...I hated the class. I didn't go very much because she just reads off of slides...when the slides are also online. I wouldn't recommend her. The reviews are nice, but they have so much info on them that it takes hours to complete and its overwhelming.
Content was great and she really knew what she was talking about. Reviews were helpful and she's excellent at helping you during her office hours. Yes, her tests are hard but not impossible making A's on. She offered extra credit to all. Type your notes for easier reviewing. Great prof!
Very good teacher. She doesn't just read the slides like some say, but goes in depth about what is on them. Grades are pretty straight forward-4 test with chances for extra credit. Reviews are real helpful. Just do the reviews and STUDY them and you will do well in the class. A must take professor!!
extremly liberal. acts like she isn't. easy enuff class but BORING BORING BORING
Julie is the most interesting teacher I have every had! She really tries to get everyone involved in class discussions and really makes you think about issues you normally wouldn't be concerned with like genocide, torture, and other human rights violations. Awesome professor and a MUST TAKE!!!!!!!!!

She's a nice teacher, if you do the review and know it relatively well you'll do just fine. Dont really need to read the book but it's useful for the review with definitions. Tests based on lecture notes so you have to go to class.
Fantastic Professor!she gave two quizes before each exam & added the points to exams. very nice, will take her again, really enjoyed going to class, I made a A!! Great Lady would take her!!!
a great teacher, love the class, can make an A easily if you pay attention in class and study your noets occaisionally
She is a great professor. She gives the class the tools they need to ace her class. Attendance is a must, she doesn't take it, but her tests ARE the notes she gives in class. The book won't help you much. Studying is also a must. She gives reviews though and if you know the review inside and out-you will make an A on the test.
She claims you have to read the book to get an A. You don't, just memorize the review. The review is basically the highlights of class notes so you have to come all the time.
I DIDN'T LIKE THE CLASS. HER TESTS WERE HARD, BUT ALL IS IS IS REVIEW SHE SAYS, BUT I FELT AS IF WHAT I STUDIED WASN'T ON THE TEST. SHE WORDS HER TEST DIFFERENTLY FROM THE NOTES.
She is a very very good teacher. Her test comes straight from her lectures and just take good notes and you will not have a problem in that class. Also do the work book assignments it might not seem like much then you will realize when exemptions come around that you should've did it. GREAT TEACHER AND HOT TOO!!!
great teacher...come to class-she will give extra credit quizzes randomly, also do any other extra credit she offers. You could make a B on all the tests and still make an A in the course if you did extra credit. She's great-take advantage of the extra credit!!
dont take her telling u.......................
She is really nice and seems to care about your grade, but does not know how to teach a summer session class. She gives readings that are almost impossible to complete and then calls on individuals in class to answer obscure questions about them. She doesn’t let students think much for themselves, its always repeating what the author said. Plus she
I loved her class, I am going to take her again and again!
Read the chapters and do the assignments and you will do well. She makes everything crystal clear.
she explains everything to the T. come to class, read a little bit, and do the reviews and you'll be fine. she's very nice too.
Her tests take a lot of studying to do well, but you can exempt her final if you get an "A" average. Very interesting class.
She is a very liberal person and will let you know about it. She puts forth her beliefs and is all about letting you know about Amnesty International.
This lady talks so much about things that do not even matter. If she gets talking about Cambodia or Darfur, you will be in class until the sun goes down. Her tests are way to hard and she tries to stuff too much material on them. She is really scared people are cheating all the time to. She preaches about how "were in college now" constantly.
Dude, people she is not that hot, maybe for Nac but she isnt any better to look at than the news anchor here. She gives her opinion through the whole lecture, repeats everything over and over and over just to hear herself talk, on the tests be prepared to turn your hats backwards NO CHEATING! Shes just nuts don't take her unless you want to drop.
Her class is really interesting. She really challenges your ideas without being preachy and tries to make her lectures interesting and engages the class. She puts up lecture outlines that pretty much tell you what she thinks is important for the test. If you come to class and take notes and do your workbook assignments there's no way you can fail.
Class isnt hard if you come everyday. She does a one pop quiz before every exam (if no one cheats) and gives the points as extra credit towards the exam. She gives a study guid which helps and the only thing that is hard is the fact that she has about 2 pages of open ended questions on her exams.
if you know her test review inside and out you will do fine... come to class and you will have the answers to the review... has 3 tests 1 comprehensive final... workbook assignments every so often... go to class and you'll do fine
I love how she teaches. She is always talking, cracking jokes, and keeping things fun. She is really helpful, all of her lecture outlines are on WebCT, as well and test reviews. She puts them our right after the first test. If you don't have the money to buy the book ask her to put it on reserve, she'll be more then happy to.
Lectures are interesting, she keeps the class involved. Has some extra credit pop quizzes. Take notes and make sure you do the workbook/homework assignments - she won't remind you. She's big on responsibility. I didn't and it lowered my grade by 15 points.
Great professor! SFA needs more teachers like her.
teaches you more than just what the text book says
She is a good professor! She knows her stuff! I wouldn't miss class too often a lot of her test are from lecture! Do the review and you wouldn't have to open the book maybe here and there but not much!! Take her!! I would take her again if I could!
She sometimes has interesting lectures but i found her test to be difficult and worded tricky. I would not recommend her.
This professor's class is difficult and she does have this weird paranoia about people cheating!! Her test are crammed full of info and the review sheets take at least 2 days to fill out... I would not recommed her for a 100 level course!
I highly reccomend taking her. Her class is easy if you just go and take notes.
Total ice queen. Grades brutally. Arrogant. Take Tkacik instead.
I enjoyed this class. If you take notes and pay attention you'll do well. She tries to pass herself off as hard-nosed, but don't let her bark scare you. She does alot to help her students, INCLUDING LETTING YOU SKIP THE COMPREHENSIVE FINAL! I suppose there's always a "better" professor... but you won't regret taking her class.
Difficult to deal with. Demands you voice your opinion in class, but if your opinion differs from her own, you will never be allowed to speak in her class again. Very liberal, but pretends that she isn't. Will not be taking her class again.
I had no interest in polisci prior to this class, but she kept it interesting. She's a good prof and knows what she's talking about. Study for her tests because you have 4 and she drops one. If you do well enough on the first 3 you wont have to take the final! Loved this class.
This teacher is great, she is also amazingly good looking for her age. I did not do very well in her class, but thats my fault. I really enjoyed attending her class. The class discusions were fun and she has a passion for what she teaches.
She is a great teacher! I took notes everyday in class and I was able to make an A in the class. She makes a review prior to each test with stuff that will be on the test. never read the chapters she assigned, but read the one she wrote. It was tough not reading it for the test
She is a great teacher. She has a lot of group discussion. Test can be a big challenging at times. She is definitely a teacher I would recommend.
Attendance is not required, but highly suggested, they will take roll, but you won't be counted off. She really wants the students to pass the class, but if people don't pay attention it can get ugly. Pay attention and you'll do fine, good teacher.
She's a pretty good teacher. Her tests aren't easy but they aren't incredibly hard either.Make sure to do the review & study it inside & out!!Her tests are mostly multiple choice but she has a few short answer Q's(Don't sweat those. As long as you study well they'll be a piece of cake).Beware though she talks pretty fast so be prepared to write FAST
Lectures are not based on a powerpoint and are very discussion based, so its difficult to know what you need to study. However, the way she teaches keeps it lively and interesting, so its easy to pay attention. Though she does expect things from you, she is always willing to repeat things and just help in general. Very intelligent. Overall great
The teacher is fair, tests are HARD. But there's a lot of information to learn for the class,so it makes sense. She's fair, and she's really nice. She lets anyone speak in classes, so ignore whatever the others say.
She doesn't take roll but to pass you have to go to class. The test are hard and her reviews aren't very helpful. I made several appointments to see her during her office hours and she never showed. She's very forgetful. Read the chapter!! And print off her forms to take notes with.
Unfortunately, I had this class with about 300 morons that never shut up and it seriously hurt the lectures. Nonetheless her tests are very easy if you pay attention and study (she wrote the book, so definitely read it) and in a setting with fewer people I think she'd make a good or great lecturer.
This class is interesting, but there is a TON of reading. If you don't like to read, I would suggest not taking the class. We got up to 5 points on our final grade for doing outlines. She told us almost exactly what would be on the tests so we could study. Attendance is important because her lectures have lots of information for the tests.
i attended her class high all the time. i loved it. she teaches alot, is obviously liberal & allows students to respond. i was in a class of like 450 though, so that wasnt the best idea. she uses powerpoints,& i wouldnt buy her book, i didnt & never needed it. Take good notes. i made an A in the class. never took the final because my grade was high
She is a great teacher. Her tests are fair, but if you take notes and listen in lecture, you really won't need to read the book that much. If you are okay with your grade after the 3rd exam, you don't have to attend class after that. All you have is the 3 or 4 exams. She will randomly have quizzes, but they can't hurt you and are just for bonus.
Professor Stephens is very helpful. She talks the whole class but if you listen you won't really need to read the book, especially if you sit in the front. She tries to make the class interesting for everyone. Her tests aren't hard as long as you go to class. Great teacher!!!!
She was an awesome teacher! Her tests arent really hard as long as yo upay attention in class (You'll at least pass with a C) GO.TO.CLASS. I promise it pays off.
Great teacher, and easy class if you show up. She keeps the class fun, and explains every aspect in simple terms, so you understand
i loved this class the test are simple if you listen to the lectures the book arent even needed, plus the si teachers goes over exactly what the lecture was about i made a b in the class
AWESOME
Awesome professor! Very interesting to listen to. Very straight forward test. Know those review sheets like the back of your hand and you'll get an A! SI sessions are helpful as well.
I loved this class. She is a great teacher. She is pretty easy especially if you show up though it's not required. Tests are both muti choice and a few short answer with bonus questions on every test. I recommend for anyone that has to take poly sci
I definitely recommend her to everyone! She is super nice and funny! After 3 exams, if you like your grade in the class you do not have to take the final!! Also, if you miss a test, its okay because she only takes the top 3 out of 4! Going to class isn't mandatory, but I recommend it because everything she talks about in lecture is on the test!
She is a good teacher. I suggest you go to class or you wont do well on her test. She gives a good review for her test. You have to pay close attention or else you fail. I just showed up and watched Netflix...bad idea! She is a good teacher though and sometimes has funny jokes. If you want an easy A runaway! If not what the hell go for it
She is an AWESOME teacher! I would reccomend her to anyone! Just read, do the reviews and come to class and you will do well. She made class enjoyable even though it was an 8:00 class. She is great! And she drops the lowest test gade!
The class is down to earth. If you want an A then I recommend going to class. her test consist of her lectures. I will highly suggest goig to SI.
She has been perhaps one of my favorite professors since I have been here. She does not require you to come to class, but will be upfront with you on the first day by telling you everything from the lectures is on the test. As long as you go to class, read the books, and do the reviews you will be fine!
Starts off seeming really nice ends up being a pain. Lots of writing and is not real clear on the research. Even though she says her political views have no affect on her grading, I found that if you write to her views you get better grades. Unless it's needed don't take her.
I love her. she is very smart very motivated prof.she wants to teach and if you work hard you can get an A.
I loved her! She's funny, smart and tends not to use her own political views. You DO have to study for her tests if you want to do well, so just take good notes and you'll do great. She's awesome.
Definitely recommend her! I have never learned so much in a history class before! I actually enjoy class and don't sit and watch the clock the whole time. Tests are multiple choice and a few short answer but very easy if you go to class and do your review.
Dr. Harrelson-Stephens was a great professor. If you attend class and write down everything she says you will pass the 4 exams in the class. She really made politics interesting.
This class was very difficult for me. You definitely need to attend every single class, ask as many questions as possible and attend SI. She's a good professor and everything but this is not the class to stare at your desk.
GO TO YOUR SI! IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
She was great. My favorite professor this year. Just take notes and STUDY your review sheet and you'll do fine. There are 4 tests but you only have to take 3 if you like the average you get from those. Go to class.
Before she starts a chapter still will put notes and a review online, if you do it you will do great in the class! The final is cumulative but she allows you to look at old tests all the time.
Wonderful teacher!!! She was great loved her class even though it was at 8am. Take her class.
Dr. Harrelson's class is one of the best classes I've taken at SFA. She knows how to get students interested in her class. She's not easy though. Although attendance isn't required you must go if you want to get a high grade. Her tests are easy if you go to lecture, keep up with the review and study, like she says to do.
She's awesome!
Dr. Julie is the best professor I have ever had! She is fabulous. I didn't care for SFA and eventually transferred to another university with a better political science program but, I miss her incredibly. She is so knowledgable and really connects with fellow intellectuals in her class. You should take her if you actually want to learn something.
She makes the lecture interesting and engages the class in discussion. Often it is just a few students and her engaged. The class has 4 tests and if you do well on the first 3 you don't have to take the final, or you can take them all and drop your lowest grade. Online reviews and notes are necessary for the test. The short answers can be tough!
I loved her class. She made everything clear. If you do the review she gives you before a test and know it then you'll get an A. She doesn't take attendance but in the tests it will say "According to lecture." She drops one exam grade so if you're happy with your grade you won't have to take the final or go to class at the end.
Julie is hands-down the best prof I've ever had. Her lectures are engaging and explain the material extremely well, and she makes them fun. She also knows her subject like the back of her hand and can explain it to you a million different ways until it clicks. She's dedicated to helping you understand the material and is easy to meet outside class.
She is a great professor and someone I will definitely take again. She also gives you the study guide and lecture outline three weeks before the test. So you have plenty of time to feel it out and do it.
I took the online course and it wasn't bad. Copy notes/ lecture/vocab definitions from review onto one page then search for answers with test. We had 2 attempts per test, so screenshot your answers and the answers you got wrong and fill them in again. Takes forever but it works. My test grade jumped from an 60% to a 90%. Be thorough in discussions.
This is an easy class that I would take again. If you don't do good on your test the first time taking it, take a pic of the test because she's gonna let you take it again.
The online course I would say is an easy A but I made a B. The exams are 50 questions but pretty easy. There's a module every week which can consist of 2-5 lectures both typed out and videos. The one thing that brought my grade down were the discussions. Her lectures are easy to understand but can be drawn out. I barely used the textbook.
Very nice professor, she's very respectful which seems like it can be hard to do when you teach a PSC class. Learned a lot
Amazing professor! Class is easy if you take notes & study even a little bit. Textbook is necessary if you want to make an A as a few questions on each test aren't covered in lecture, but if you're fine with a B then don't bother. Lecture heavy but she often keeps them interesting with personal anecdotes. 4 tests but the final is optional
I really enjoyed her lectures! Makes the information relevant to non-majors and keeps it interesting. Its all lecture and 4 exams. No quizzes, no attendance, no group projects. There is a short paper and the final is optional. Reviews are great but exhaustive so you end up frantically studying soooooo much more than whats actually on the tests.
don't take this class if you want your GPA to be ruined, take someone else, tests are 50 multiple choice, 5 short answers, tough grader, uses the textbooks a lot and both are the most expensive books I've bought through all 4 years of being here, notes are based off lecture
Easy A. If you can listen to lectures and get to know the profs expectations, you don't need the book. I read for the first test & stopped bc test are mostly lecture based. If you aren't a good test taker don't take the class, but she will help you if you have a hard time in her office hours. She drops you lowest test grade & gives bonus quizzes.
She is a character so we ready to do extra work outside of class like signing up for SI to study and pass her class. It's not a horrible class but she can get off-topic and onto a different one if you're not careful. You need to study for these tests and everything that was covered or you will not pass. You honestly don't need to read the book.
Julie was an awesome professor she is a fun person. She goes over everything in class thats on the test. I did not read the test book for the test. I used the quizzes as a study guide. Being in class is non mandatory but it is important to show up to class.
I took polisci online expecting it to be easy but it is just as much work as online. I might as well have taken it online. If you're looking for it to be an easy online A, this is not your best bet. Overall, two discussions, quizzes every week, and 4 exams.
I took Dr. Stephens for Texas Government. She's a decent professor and if you put the bare minimum and time into it, you can get an easy A. I'm personally not a fan of her as she likes to go on biased political tangents in lectures but if you show up and do the textbook reading out of class, you will pass and if you struggle, you can access her.
Love Dr. Harrelson-Stephens. She makes the material interesting and her lectures aren't boring. You only get graded for the tests that can be kind of difficult, but if you go to class and fill out the review, you should be fine! Also the SI is helpful and I would recommend going!
There was only 4 grades in the whole class making everything worth 25%. She gives you little time to do the work and she doesn't give back grades until a month after. She expects you to already know everything so she doesn't go too much into depth on topics. I honestly can name everything I learned on one hand. I would not recommend this professor.
At first I was stressed out about the tests and material, but in the end it was worth it I came out with an A. You have to attend the lectures and read the textbook because thats what each test covers, but if you study you will do well. This professor truly CARES about the students and wants you to do well. She offers many extra credit opportunity.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She waits until the very last minute to grade everything. It is currently finals week and I have no clue what I am going to get in the class because half of the work she gave us is not graded yet. Her class is so unorganized, shes constantly changing due dates around. Her feedback is very vague and her directions are unclear. 0/10
She was pretty good! I'd take again, make sure you read the book! most test are like quizzes.
I have literally emailed her 4 times this summer from the email on her syllabus, texted the number provided, and showed up to her office hours all to just get feedback on my exams and she was completely unresponsive! Even now at the end of the semester she hasn't responded once. I will not take her classes every again.
She frequently gets off topic in class and tends to grade better if you agree with her political views. We often spend more time talking about her own personal experiences and VERY loosely related topics rather than just the objective facts about the subject. It's also very easy for students to get her off topic which wastes a majority of class.
Her class is very lecture-heavy, but she will go off on tangents about random things with specific students. You are required to buy a textbook that SHE wrote and do modules that are due every Monday but there will only be 1-2 questions on the test that are from the book. She is a very strict grader and not very forgiving of ANY mistakes.
The class is great until you get to the first exam; when that happens, you realize that nothing could have prepared you for it short of memorizing the textbook. No curve is given, so it can be assumed that it's just bad all around. All relevant info is buried randomly in the textbook with no direction given.
She goes off on lots of tangents and talks about irrelevant things. If you want to pass you have to teach yourself because she doesn't speak very clearly.
I took her basic government class, and struggled the whole time. She gets off topic during lectures, NEVER tells you what to expect the test to be like, and doesn't put grades in. The online assignments are easy, but the tests aren't. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you skip one day you will fall so behind that you won't be able catch up.
Her exams are very hard. Make sure you take notes during her lectures (which are kind of unorganized sometimes) as well as study the corresponding textbook chapters. I genuinely like this class, her lectures were always entertaining and interesting.
Would absolutely take this class again!! The only mistake I made was buying the textbook, if you attended every lecture, you will pass. She teaches EVERYTHING on the test, and also makes the lectures fun and easy to listen to. She's a super fair grader in my opinion, and I wish I could have her as a teacher again.
