Asks for a lot of details on papers, but overall not bad.
Doesn't shave her armpits! Uses very long words. She is always correct whether right or wrong. She encourages profanity!
She is nice and explains herself really well. She is also very helpful.
She preaches. Whether you agree with her or not, she will constantly preach what she thinks is right, and she usually ties lesbian issues into everything.
Okay, I was really interested in this class until about 2 weeks in. The class seems interesting, but I think it is sooo boring. Julie seems nice and all, but she says she encourages different opinions, but SHE always has the right answer and is unwilling to accept other opinions. Not encouraged
Excellent class if you're willing to work.
She is very spacy when it comes to her teaching style. Also we get off track a lot which is not something we need to be doing when we need to be taking notes.
Julie is a very smart woman. However, as the other commentators have said, she tends to let us as a class get sidetracked and she preaches in an indirect way. She always encourages you to have your own opinion but will not neccesarily accept it because of how strongly she feels about her own opinions. I can guarantee you will learn a lot though!
I don't consider myself particularly a feminist, and I am not a lesbian, but who cares about unshaven armpits? Really! Julie is an awesome teacher who is very knowledgeable about the content, and who, I feel, is open to varying opinions. Not an incredible hard grader, and assignment aren't terribly taxing.
I only have a few complaints. One being that she's not very good at explaining herself or clarifying what she means. My other complaint is that nearly EVERY poem we read she interpreted it as about something sexual. No matter how innocent or far from sex a poem seemed, thats what it was about to her. She's nice overall though.
Very good class. Hard, but rewarding. If you need help, she will gladly give it.
Class was interesting & fun. She is very helpful & really down to earth. I went & talked to her a few times about my grade & she flat out told me what I needed to do to get it. Tests are easy & you'll probably get at least a B even if you study a lil. Doing the readings is helpful but I got away with only reading a few. Does not tollerate skipping.
Julie is the best english professor I've ever had. She grades somewhat hard, but very fair. If you do "A" work, you get an A. The poems in which she relates to sex are, in fact, about sex. She made the class very enjoyable. I would recomend her to anyone interested in the subject(s) she teaches.
Julie is a teacher with many opnions. She encouraged to express your opinions however only hers were correct. I often visited her for help but she was not very helpful for me. She posed many questions that were very unclear and she often had trouble clarifying what she wanted. I also felt that she graded to hard for an introductory class.
Julie is incredibly organized and on task. She presents herself very well and makes class discussion relevant. Her papers are challenging but she is more than willing to help if you ask. Heavy reading and strict attendance policy. If you are not a strong writer you will have a hard time passing her papers
julie was a great professor! she made the class fun and interesting and kept everyone involved. class participation is based on in-class discussions and a few essays. tests were essay format as well, but there were only 2. i would recommend not only julie, but this class as well!!
I have never received anything less than an A in English but in Julie's class I got a C. I would agree with everybody else, despite how hard you try you will learn a lot but you will not get an A. Attendance is mandatory but you're allowed 3 free missed classes, after that she even counts tardies as a missed class. Tough. I wouldn't recommend her.
Knows what she is talking about, but VERY hard to get an A. If you want to learn something new take this teacher.
This is a fun class, but while Julie's very smart, it's difficult to get an A in her classes based on her tough grading. Additionally, she's really serious and this makes her seem unapproachable, but she's actually cool. However, you learn a lot in Julie's class!
Julie is very serious about her subject matter but is very funny and enjoyable person. Group discussion is a major part of this class. She is very good at finding value in even the worst comments =) Work hard on the papers, she's a TOUGH grader!
Julie knew what she was talking about. She is a VERY TOUGH grader. Make sure you explain what you are thinking to the tiniest detail! Read the books and participate in class. You are only allowed a certain number of classes to miss, then your grade is lowered dramaticaly. Overall she is fun in class and knows how to teach!
should be a 400 level course.
Fantastic professor.
Very, very helpful and extremely interested in getting her students good grades. Explores counterarguements thoroughly, so make sure you have a good argument!
HORRIBLE teacher. Julie made this class a lot harder than it needed to be. I never a class and participated at least once a day in discussion and received a "C" in participation. Was no help at all. I met with her numerous times for papers, correcting what she wanted and still docked my grade with no explanation.
Julie was a really great teacher. You should expect to talk in class because every day you sit in a circle and talk about what you read and sometimes pop quizes! Make sure to do homework!! Also she is a TOUGH GRADER! She doesn't have a rubric so you really have to guess at what she wants. She's very open about office hours though.
UNACHIEVABLE EXPECTATIONS! Do NOT take a class with Julie unless you're a freakin' genius. I've NEVER received lower than a B on a college paper, and she constantly gives me C's or D's. Constantly asks "What's in my head" questions and talks over students heads. Avoid at all costs!
Julie is an amazing professor! She's very engaging, and the books you read are fantastic. Just keep in mind, if you're looking for an easy class, this isn't it. If, however, you're looking for a vigorous and rewarding experience, Julie is the one you want! She's one of the most brilliant minds I've ever encountered.
I took 4 classes with Julie while attending BG, and I can honestly say that each one challenged me in unexpected, but incredibly rewarding ways. Her teaching style maintains a formal-yet-non-hierarchical approach that was incredible to me, as it provided both a respite from institutional malaise and an educational model I hope to one day work from.
Julie is an extremely intelligent woman. She knows a lot about the subjects she teaches and that shows during her lectures. She engages the class as much as possible and tries to approach students on a peer level rather than teacher-student. She is a rather hard grader in regards to papers. Listen in class & take notes - you'll be fine.
While she is an intelligent women this class is very difficult and she is a tough grader. She does not make the class interesting whatsoever, I would fall asleep
Animal rights - not my main interest, but it was nice to stick to one topic for most of the semester.
I dont not recommend this class. The professor is very strict and acts like her class is the only class that matters. She can be ery offensive at times as well. I will say that if you are not completely intersted in this topic (LGBT studys) this class is not for you.
Julie is incredibly knowledgeable. She is a tough grader, but I got an A on my first paper, you just have to work for it. I thought she made class interesting, and I enjoyed the class quite a bit. She gives great criticism. Class is probably only good for people who are interested in English. If you have no interest in it, Julie isn't right 4 you
Julie is a very good professor who explains everything in great detail. There is a lot of reading and in class discussions based on readings. You have to attend class to really understand what is going on though. Overall she is willing to help with any issues and is pretty flexible if you communicate with her. Would recommend her for the WS class
Julie Haught is one of the better professors I've had in my college career. She really makes you interested in the topics and has a clear passion for her profession. Considering it is an English class, there is quite a bit of reading involved as well as essay and writing exercises. I would definitely recommend her & take a class of hers again.
Julie is a smart woman, but has a hard time relaying that information to her students. Her lectures are long and boring; half the class stopped showing up very early in the semester. Notorious for assigning in-class writings that are worth up to 100 points. She expects these to be written in 10-15 minutes. Avoid Julie if all possible.
Julie Haught is a harsh grader for a 2000 level course. Her lectures are long and not passionate. I felt patronized whenever speaking to her. She expects a lot, and she doesn't give any leeway. I'm an AB student, and I received a C in her course. For an LGBT Studies course, I never felt like that class was a safe space. Do not recommend this prof.
She is the worst teacher ever, DONT TAKE WITH HER. She thinks that she always right even that thing is wrong, i worked hard in her class but she failed me because she looked at my personalty before my grade, if i have any chance to take that class again i wont take with her.
Julie is tough but really wonderful. She knows her stuff and if you pay attention and work hard in the class you will learn a lot, and your grade reflects your effort. I thought I bombed the final assignment though I worked my butt off and I got a B, which looking back I feel I deserved. V cool old lady!
Julie always carefully articulates what she says and runs class in a very discussion-oriented manner. She certainly makes you work for your grade so don't expect to just breeze through. Julie is very insightful and is willing to help anyone who asks. By working hard and actively listening/participating in class, I benefited greatly from this class.
Julie expects you to come to class prepared everyday ready to participate, and you have to participate to pass. The readings she assigns are long and pretty boring. The in class assignments are challenging and you don't get much time to do them. She made me more interested in women studies. Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A.
Julie is a wonderful professor who really opened my eyes for women's studies and is a real gem if you can see through her tough writing assignments and readings. I really enjoyed her class and plan on taking her next semester!
Julie is awful... if you don't care about WS classes DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! She grades unreasonable hard, very opinionated, makes up her own definitions because normal definitions don't relate to WS. She is also an English teacher so your paper "will never be capable of a 100%". It's not even possible to get a 100% in participation.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class to anyone. You get 3 absences and after that every absence is 3% off your final grade so if you skip more then 3 then you're pretty much screwed. Super tough grader and is very specific about everything. Participation counts if you don't participate in class discussions you won't do well.
Julie is a wonderful professor and always keeps her classes interesting. While her classes and assignments are very challenging, she is always willing to help you out if you ask. Participation is important for your grade, so make sure to always come to class prepared and ready to contribute. I have never regretted taking one of her classes!
If you are lazy and uninterested in WS then you wont enjoy Julies class. Otherwise, i highly recommend. She is incredibly wise and her classes have helped me grow as a student. I have the utmost respect for Julie. She remains very objective and open to all students views. I wish i could have taken more classes with her.
Julie is the worst prof I have ever had. She is an extremely tough grader, especially for an introductory course. Her guidelines for the essays are not clear and she gives little to no feedback. She gave me a D on the first essay because I used too many sources! Also will ridicule your opinion even if she asked for it. Not open to others' opinions.
Julie is a nice and funny professor. With that being said, in my opinion, for an intro to Literature class I think she grades too hard which can be discouraging.
She will mark you wrong on opinion based questions if your views are not exactly like hers. The class literally promotes hatred of the majority, and tries poorly to justify it.
I enjoyed Dr. Haught. She taught the material well. If you don't enjoy literature (or lazy), don't take the class. Her papers are difficult, but she makes you work hard. Visit during office hours, it will help your grade because she gets to know you better as a person and student. She's tough, but if you want to learn something, take her!
Julie is thorough with the information given. As an intro class, it's difficult, but that's b/c she expects you to work diligently. She's always happy to help you and learn more about her students during office hours. If you're lazy, don't take the class. It was hard, but I learned a TON in her class, so if you want to learn something, take her!
Work hard on your essays and participate in class, then this course will be okay. Shes not clear on what she wants and this was consistent through everyone I talked to about their grades on essays; I suggest to go to her office hours and figure it out and how to achieve it so you wont fail. Shes really nice, though and I learned a lot.
Don't take this class if you're not willing to be open-minded or think critically. That being said, the subject matter was, for me, interesting enough that it didn't feel like a lot of work. Julie, overall, is amazingly kind and takes care to make sure that her students are comfortable, no matter what their opinion is. She's quirky, fun, and smart.
Julie was nice professor and made the class interesting. The discussions were fun and she really helped us come up with good ideas on the papers. The papers are challenging but she gives plenty of time to do them. Only complaint were that she graded too heavily on participation. Overall, she was great and it was a really fun old-fashioned class.
Probably one of the most compassionate, considerate professors Ive ever had. The amount of respect I have (and that my fellow students have) for her is immense. Very well-spoken, intelligent, but also easy to understand. Doesnt make you feel stupid for not understanding something. Values all students input. 10/10 would take again.
Julie was my favorite English teacher I've ever had. She was an excellent teacher and was very direct about what she expected from us. She chose interesting poems, stories, and plays for us to read. She was strict with her grading for papers, but was never unfair. She makes a real connection with her students. Lots of writing!
Took honors english all through high school and struggled in this class. Super harsh grader. Seems like a very nice woman and maybe being online was a disadvantage but I would stay away from this class.
I loved this class. We had readings to do every week, all in online formatting which is nice no book to buy, and class was in depth discussion about the concepts in readings. Julie is very open and made everyone feel comfortable in class. Its the only remote class Ive taken this semester that felt close to being in a physical classroom again.
Julie is very nice, although a bit tough at times. She genuinely enjoys what she is teaching and its very clear. However, there are very few grades in class and theyre all papers/projects.
Julie was too complex and would ask in depth questions that you couldn't understand. Her assignments were lengthy and difficult, and she never ever gives anyone a hundred percent, even if they got and did everything right. Never explained the readings, just started asking deep and confusing questions about things we didn't all fully understand.
Prof Haugh simply did not understand the challenges of doing college during COVID-19 and instated an attendance policy that was the harshest I have ever seen. Miss more than 3 classes? Your final grade drops by 4% PER CLASS MISSED. Even if you did well on key portions of the class, you failed. Final Exam + Research Project at end of semester. Yikes
Personally, I would never take this class again. It is advertised as an intro to literature course but you are graded similarly to her junior-level courses. On the first paper assigned she made sure to mention that no matter what you will not receive full credit on your work because according to her "even Shakespeare never got an A".
Julies class is structured through just discussion. You do 1-3 readings before class and then come to class and discuss them. Also sometimes research for homework is required. Does ask very broad, deep thinking questions that are hard to understand sometimes. Also doesn't actually answer some of the questions she asks. Classroom is def a safe space
Julie is a pretty good professor. While she was kind of a pain in the behind, she really does get a lot of her students. I wouldn't take this class again, just because I hate class discussions, and if you don't participate much, your grade will suffer. Overall though, you'll learn a lot from her that'll help you in the long run.
Professor Haught is a very harsh grader, so don't expect to earn an A. However, her class was full of engaging discussions on literature that helped in changing how I viewed certain pieces. Provides a lot of good feedback and workshopping on how to improve your writing, of which there will be a lot to do. Very in-depth assignments.
Worst prof I have had at bg. She is the toughest grader ever. She takes off insane amount of points if you miss little details that she is looking for. Avoid if you can. If not, make sure you go to office hours to get her to help and like you or else you're screwed.
Julie is definitely a tough grader, but getting an A is not impossible. You need to have strong writing abilities and be ready to learn and listen in order to succeed in this class. Julie gives interesting insights and is incredibly knowledgeable in all topics she discusses in class. This class is a safe space, and Julie is very inclusive.
Lovely professor that cared about each individual student and made sure to learn everyone's names. She always made sure to account for anyone with any possible disabilities and encouraged discussion and communication. Easy grader, but a lot of reading homework. Fun class!
She was rude, strict, old rules. She is just very strict on rules. Would not recommend taking her classes.
One of the best professors I've had at bg. She's definitely a tough grader though, so I would only recommend taking her classes if you're truly interested in the material/it's required. The class is discussion based, and she chooses a lot of great readings. She cares about her students and is very knowledgeable and helpful.
She is definitely more strict, but I compare it to 'tough love'. If you show effort in the class, and talk frequently you'll do fine. Even the papers aren't too difficult if you just take good notes in class.
this is the worst professor I have ever had at BGSU as a junior. An 100% is not possible as she refuses to give full credit on anything (even participation). If you mess up one small thing, expect to lose 20 points or more with absolutely no explication. Do absolutely everything you can to avoid this professor, as she should not be one.
Do not ever expect an 100% on any assignment in this class. She very obviously does not want her students to succeed. She seems to have something against her students, so I am unsure as to why she is a professor.
There is a ton of reading and some of the stories can be rather confusing. She doesn't explain the essays in much detail until its right about time to turn them in and will not answer any of your emails or she will with little regard to anything you said. Avoid taking classes with her as a professor unless it is absolutely necessary.
I have never received a poor grade on an essay, but in the time that I have been in Professor Haut's class, I have not received a grade above a B- in anything but participation. She doesn't accept answers that vary from her own opinion, she brutally nit-picks all details, she refuses to see your viewpoint, and it seems that she skims assignments.
She is a very tough grader and participation matters. Read a lot of readings about lgbtq+ or had that idea in it, then had to write papers about that topic. She also very much speaks up about lgbtq+ and brings up that shes a teacher of classes like that. I wouldn't have her as a professor again if I had to choice.
Horrible grader. claims as a professor, her job is not to teach, but to make sure you know what you are doing and send you along..why are you a professor then? why am i paying you? extremely disappointed with this professor and her abilities. there is no way to achieve success in her class she will never admit you did well. 100% not even on rubric
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS. WORST I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE BGSU CAREER.
extremely tough grader. class is definitely not an intro to lit, she grades it as though you are a professional in it. she is not very accepting and made me feel uncomfortable to ask her things. she made me feel unintelligent. did not get 100% on anything, not even participation, and i did everything i was asked to. would not recommend.
Julie doesn't let people get away with things other professors do and I appreciate it. She's very understanding to people with different circumstances. If she knows your name and you participate a lot, you'll do just fine. (Fair warning: she rarely gives grades higher than a 95%) Her feedback is also great. I apply it in other classes a lot.
She is a very harsh grader, will find any way to dock you points even if what you have turned in meets all the requirements and should be 100%. The class is just who can be the most politically correct without really saying anything of substance. She manages to make me feel stupid every day. Participation is required.
tough grader is an understatement.
Discussion based, and if you don't have anything novel to say you lose points. Readings are incredibly relevant and valuable, and discussions are meaningful. Comments are met with thoughtful responses, but written feedback doesn't explain point deductions. The course was great, but she held a couple unideal views about important relevant issues.
She is not very helpful when it comes to feedback before the paper is due. I had submitted several thesis statements to her, asking which is better, and she gave me no clear answer.
Julie is a great professor! In order to do well, you definitely need to come to class and participate, even if it is at 8am. The class discussions are incredibly helpful when it comes to the papers and texts. However, Julie is also a pretty harsh grader. Do not take this class unless you are really willing to put in extra work to get an A.
she is the definition of a nightmare. she lies to make things fit a narrative that everything is "racist", and said the word queer was racist with no factual backup. She treats her students like high schoolers with attendance requirements and if you are absent more than 3 times she keeps your grade as low as she can on purpose. I could keep going.
TERRORIZES her student. Thinks she can never be incorrect, makes you feel that you are never correct. Hardest grader I have ever had, makes it her life goal to make stuff up to doc points on your paper. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
If you fall behind, you will not be able to catch up. She is a very nice lady but grade wise I couldn't recover
Participation is a MUST. You cannot skip class otherwise you may as well fail. Very tough grader when it came to essays and close readings. I definitely improved from her feedback but I barely scraped by. I recommend not taking this class but if you decide to, take it as Pass/Fail.
Worst professor I've ever had and that's saying something. Not helpful for struggling students and does not care at all if you pass or fail. You are pretty much just a seat to fill rather then a person she wants to genuinely make a better student.
Literally RUN AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Grades so harshly and then gives no feedback as too what you actually did wrong. Every text we read in class she will connect it to a queer theme, so there was never anything different or diverse. She made me feel like an idiot every time I opened my mouth, which talking is required so...
