Always willing to help. Very easy to talk to.
She's not specific about moost topics, and just pretty weird and simple
Presents material well, but tests are unusually difficult. Be prepared.
She was pretty wacky, but the examples she gave really helped out.
She gave many examples and always looked to be having fun, which always helps.
very good teacher. seems to have fun and is concerned about students learning!
she is so confusing, get matchett if you can
She is always willing to help you understand. She's an excellent teacher.
She'll always answer your questions. She's very easy to talk to.
Great Prof, easy to understand but her class is hard
Pretty good prof--Tries best w/ hard material. Tests can be long & hard though.
She is a great chemistry teacher, tries her best to help students learn.
Easy if you've previously had chemistry. Answers questions, not always clear
was helpful and clear, learn a lot if you keep up
She's a very nice person, but not much of a teacher.
She is very good about making it to class, but needs to work on her teaching.
she isn't the easiest but she cares about you and helps you plus explains well
Tries her best to teach hard material, some exam questions way to difficult
Funny and nice. Exams pretty difficult, but bearable. Matchett is much harder!
Easy class if you pay attention at all. She will help with any questions you hav
Tough Teacher but so is the subject material. Pleasent sense of humor about chm
She's very friendly. Cares about what you've learned and always willing to help
Not easy to talk to. Very difficult to follow her lectures. jokes are not funny.
I went into the class thinkning I would to fail; she made it easy to understand
No Longer At GVSU left for another school
Thank god she's gone, I think she went back to be with her people: The Knomes
She left GVSU to join frodo and the other hobbitts, she will be missed at gvsu
I heard that she is coming back, she went on sabaticle to the land of the elfs
this lady is evil!

Very hard teacher
This material is tough. She handles it well, though. Maybe I'm dumb.
She's BaAack! Hard course, decent job teaching it. Helpful if you ask. Hardexams
****, DONT take her, unclear lectures, tests impossible, 80% class failed
she is sooo nice, explains things till you understand it, very very helpful
Incredibly nice lady teaching an incredibly tough course.
pure evil. I think she enjoys seeing students fail
Very tough lab grader. Spell a couple of words wrong or get a couple sig figs wrong and you get like 10 pts off. Not a fun class. There are better lab instructors
lab write up she takes a lot off if you mess up a little take your time on them and still expect to miss ten points
She is waaay too picky on her grading...knocks all your points off for little mistakes. She's very helpful and good at explaining things, but grades way too hard. Not clear on what she wants for a good grade

Very nice but very frustrating when you need to ask questions/in her grading
Great teacher! Tough subject, but go to her office, and she'll work you through anything. She will put in the extra effort to make sure you understand.
self-proclaimed goggle nazi.
really nice and helpful; collects in class assignments every day, so don't skip!
Great prof if you like being treated like a 1st grader. She put stickers on your lab reports for crying out loud! Too high of expectations. Tells you she expects one thing and then grades you on something totally different. Over-explains everything.
Run while you can! Do not expect to get an A in this course! If you question her grading she will perform voodo acts on you. She tries to get people to drop her class by providing inaccurate scores. Do whatever you can to avoid Julie Henderleiter she will ruin your GPA and college experience.
Very good teacher.
She doesn't explain things very well and when you go ask her questions she makes you feel stupid!! I don't recomend her and i would avoid having her!!
A nice lady, but her tests are really hard and the class can ruin GPA. Good Luck with this one.
RUN AWAY, WORST PROF AT GV FOR SURE. I UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT, DO ALL THE HW AND IM STILL GONNA HAVE TO RETAKE THE CLASS. WENT TO TALK TO HER, MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS SPECIAL ED.
very hard exams! i understand the material and get mostly A's on the assingments and can still barely pass her exams. this class can kill your GPA. i even went to see her and she wasn't very helpful she just made me feel like she thought it was completely my fault for not doing good on the exams.
talk about ruined GPA, this class is like a five credit Anchor that’s sinking my GPA. the exams are nothing close to the homework. you'll rue the day you signed up with her.
So hard. Failed and have to re-take along with the other half of the class. Makes you feel like an idiot when you ask questions. Don't take her!
dear god avoid her at all costs, not only has she destroyed my gpa, but over half the class's as well. don't take the practice tests cuz half of what's on there won't be on the test. liked chem before, hate it now.
I think a lot of these ratings are very harsh. Yes it's a hard class, and the tests are hard, but I think she explains things very well. she writes out all the notes, puts you in groups for inclass hw (the groups can help a lot). very time consuming though! she was a good professor for a tough class
I thought she was nice. People who don't do well in lab, just don't do well in chemistry period. She's a good teacher. Read your lab book assignment before class and you'll do fine. I suck at chemistry big time and I still walked out with a "B" (amazingly.)
Chemistry is going to be tough, no matter who you have, but she is very helpful and her notes are very clear. And she doesn't try to trick you on tests. If you put the effort into the class you will do fine, and if there is something that you don't understand go to her office hours. She's helpful.
explains everything clearly, and is patient and very willing to help you with things you dont understand. onlne hw is great. exams are tough but not bad if you study. people who complain about her just wanted to slack through chemistry.
She honestly made me cry.Anyways if you learn by a teacher explaning, then giving examples, then u try an example, then she shows you what you did wrong and how to do other problems right, then DO NOT TAKE HER! I felt like I could have done better in a 4th year french class, that is how bad her lec. is.
I wouldn't take her if you paid me to. She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. As a person she is nice, as a teacher she is awful. I have never felt so uneducated in my life. It was a complete waste of time and money. Her tests were nothing like what she taught us. Good LUCK!!!
She is a terrible teacher. Not very helpful if you see her for help and makes you feel dumb like she's looking down on you. She doesn't teach very well and waste too much class time instead of teaching. She doesn't teach to her tests and you see problems on them that you never saw in class.
probably one of the worst profs i've had thus far at gvsu. the online homework and exams have questions on them that were never covered in lecture. if you ask her a question, don't expect a helpful response...she basically restates the question as a statement. nice person, bad professor
Horrible prof., DO NOT TAKE HER!! The problems on the test are totally different than what is on the homework and problems she covers in class. She wastes alot of class time saying stuff that doesnt need to be said. Tests are the worse part of this class, impossible to pass!
This was the hardest class I have taken so far at GVSU. She makes a lot of useless comments that have nothing to do with what the subject was. The tests are impossible to pass. She likes to use a lot of pointless stories in an attempt to make you think you know what she's talking about.
Great teacher and person. More than an asset to GVSU. Belongs more in a liberal arts setting. She's too nice for the general population of morons that attend this school. Open a book sometime. you'd be amazed at how much it can help. Great professor. Definitely recommended.
When you know more than the teacher, well thats kinda sad. I took many chemistry courses in highschool and this class seemed a bit insulting to my inteligence, in retrospect I should have tested out but, regardless, she is by far one of the most retarted people I have met, as well as annoying. Her class is easy but she as a person is horrible.
I was looking very forward to taking this class, and have always been in the "A-" range in Chemistry. I have to say, this was the hardest Chem. class I've ever taken. Also, since its 5 credits, it completely ruins your GPA. DO NOT take her, she's horrible! I was not slacking through it, either - I was looking into a chem major - not anymore!
worst proff ever...studied for 48 hours for the test and got a 68%, which was above the class average. I would rather eat my own toe fungis than take her again.
well I studied for 2 hours and got a 66%....so you must've be studying wrong or something, i think she's a clear prof and covers the material well and is quite willing to help, if she can't ,she send you to someone that can.....
She explains the material pretty well in lecture, but you really need to study hard for her tests- usually the last problem is the most trickiest on her tests.
She's a VERY good teacher, despite what most people are saying. Chemistry isn't for everyone, and if you're not one of those people, take CHM 109 instead. She teaches very well, and goes over everything as many times as you need. Yes, her tests can be difficult, but they make you think. That's how you learn.
She knows alot about chemistry, but she is soo familiar with it that she breezes through steps that sometimes need a little more explaining. Things that maybe, it seems you understand at first but need to relearn later on. Nice lady but not exactly the easiest. Her tests are brutal be prepared.I studied alot and averaged a C+
She doesn't clarify the labs very well, but if you have any question whatsoever about it she'll be happy to help you. Nive teacher
Knows subject very well! Also a great teacher that is always available for questions. Class usually at a fast pace but will slow down if questions are asked... Would recommend and would take her as a prof again... Also make sure you study for exams a ton... cause.... THEY"RE HELL...
She teaches everything really well and makes sure you understand all the material. If you don't understand something she will help you even if she has to go really slow, step by step. Watch out for her tests though theres always something that will throw you no matter how much you study.
She is a horrible teacher. If you want to fail, by all means take her. Needs to learn how to teach. When she explains things, you come out knowing less than when you went it. Tests are easy for the mulitple choice, but the free response at the end (which is worth 40%) is indecipherable. STAY AWAY
DO. NOT. TAKE. PERIOD!!!! If you wanna fail then by all means take it, but be warned. Also, her free response on the exams are worth 40% of your total exam grade! Her quizzes contain material that has not been disscussed in class and she expects that you know what SHE taught in HER other chm classes!
Yes, the exams were hard, but I really liked her method of teaching. I've always hated chem and she actually made it clear and almost interesting. I honestly really liked her. Definitely use book problems to prepare for quizzes/exams. Yes, free response IS hard on exams. You DO have to work pretty hard.
Knows the material well, takes her time presenting it and is always availible for office hours. Very helpful and tries to relate Chemistry to the real world. Exams are a little difficult, but if you know how to do the problems from each chapter, you should be okay.
YOU WILL FAIL, I PROMISE.....she is absolutely horrible! No matter how well you know the material, her test will completely throw you for a loop. Free response questions are extremely hard and will be the deciding factor on whether you get a D or B on the test.
Prof H. is a great professor, but is a VERY "stick to the rules" type of teacher. She refuses to round grades. She is very helpful at office hours, but in lecture, forget about it. Her exams are also very intimidating, be prepared to STUDY STUDY STUDY. Marks you down on exams for the littlest things too. Take her, but beware!
She's probably not a good professor to take first semester of your freshman year (if you're able to skip out of 115 like I did). Her exams are incredibly hard and will scare you to death. However, you're not guaranteed to fail. I got a B. Her quizzes are very easy, as is the online homework. Do well on everything else (lab too) and you'll be fine.
Terrible teacher. Lectures not well put together, lots of fumbling. Does not explain concepts in a clear manner. Tests you on things that are not presented in lecture. No amount of studying can adequately prepare you for her exams. Do not take this professor for 116.
This prof. was hard to follow. Granted, CHM 116 is not an easy class to begin with, but the prof. did not make it any easier. Explanations were hard to follow, and I got a feeling that she just didn't want to be there half the time. The class could have been easier had she put in more effort.
This is a hard class no matter what professor you take it with, but her lectures are horrible. The only way I did well in her class was visiting her office hours at least once a week and not missing a single class. Her exams are tough, but the final is easier. Take her only if you have no other choice, but I would advise to switch out of her class.
116 is a VERY hard class. Professor Henderleiter does the best she can for a hard subject. She is EXTREMELY nice and helpful. She even gave us several opportunities for extra credit. There may be some better profs for 116 but I think she is pretty good. Go into the class knowing you will have to work very hard.
Clearly presents lectures, very helpful. Exams are a little rough, but if you follow the study guides, you should be fine.
This was the worst professor I have ever had at Grand Valley!!! One of the average test scores was 69% (with no curve!!) It seemed like she really didn't care how her students did. She follows the rules way to much. She goes way to fast and there are too many notes to write. I would not recommend her!!!
Not a very good professor. She grades like all her students are already teachers or grad students. Rushed the end of the semester because she did not plan the class well. She is really tough, and not very nice. I would advise to take this class with another prof!
This professor is really nice, but the class level makes it difficult. She'd be great if the rest of the class were bright at all. The class average on a test was 65, but I got a 94, so I don't think it was her fault. I think it's just the class level and the number of people who think it's an easy A and are bitter that they were wrong
she was very helpful and did a great job teaching. it was clear that she genuinely cared that we understood the material.
I thought she was a pretty good chemistry teacher. She is very lenient and will give you points back on exam questions if you convince her that it was a confusing question. However, she is not an easy teacher BY ANY MEANS! The exams are WAY harder than the regular class material. But what do you expect from a pre-med course?
Had this professor for lab and she is SO much more helpful than my last chem lab professor. She is very helpful and helps you through lab by giving pointers or explaining concepts you might not fully understand. Can't say that for my last Chem lab professor. However, I highly recommend Professor Henderleiter!
She is SUPER helpful. The material is extremely dry but the way she teaches it makes the time go by quickly. Exams are actually not too difficult either. Go over the practice tests and problem sets(homework) beforehand and the class isn't too bad. Take lab with her too, the other prof is terrible.
She is a great teacher! Very helpful, always willing to help on homework or any other questions you have. Exams are not too bad, if you study. I really enjoyed taking her and I would strongly recommend her to others!!
Dr Henderlieter is a great teacher. She Got be interested in chem. She i very helpful and doesn't want her students to fail if they try.
She isn't the best at explaining the material, but she is very willing to answer questions.
Prof. Henderleiter is a very good teacher, she wants to make sure you know the material and use critical thinking skills. That being said her tests can be difficult but if you study hard you can do well.
I really enjoyed taking this class. Im interested in chemistry though but even with an 8am downtown I enjoyed going. She doesnt check attendance but its always good to go. Best thing to do is work on problems and the class will be a breeze. I would definitely take a class with her again!
This class was WAY too difficult for an intro class. I came into this class having never taken a chem class before, and she demands that you have prior knowledge from high school. Passing this class is fairly easy if you have experience with chem, however if you are not great at chem, expect to struggle. Her tests are extremely hard.
Dr. Henderleiter was helpful at times, but her grading criteria for lab reports was extremely fuzzy. It was the lowest grade I received this semester. Don't take it at 8am; it sucks.
If you ask her questions her answers are very vague. Her grading criteria is also very unclear, especially in lab. She is a very nice person but not a very good professor. Don't buy the textbook; you'll never use it. If you forget to do online WebAssign homework your grade is gonna hurt. Her tests are ridiculously hard. Get a tutor from day 1.
Prof. Henderleiter is a very enthusiastic teacher and she shows you that she cares about you and your grades. She definitely makes you work for your grades and her tests are fairly difficult. I am a mostly A student so ending this class with a B- was quite a let down. I could have probably tried harder though.
Chem 115 is a course that you will have to work at. Even if you come from an excellent science school, you will have a wake up call. With that said, Mrs. Henderleiter tries to place students in groups that will help you achieve the best results. If a student wants to do well, they will do well.
She is a nice person, but always seems so confused by the material. It got to the point where other students in the class were correcting her multiple times per class.
Dr. H is an angel. She sincerely wants everyone to understand. Lectures are often engaging, her sense of humor is impeccable. Inorgo-chem is a HARD subject, but she goes above + beyond to make it accessible to everyone. Spend time with your assigned group outside of class to do the homework problems, and pay attention to example problems.
She is strict but fair. Kinda boring.
Shes a nice person but her lectures are very boring and kind of hard to follow along. Her examples she gives and whats on tests and quizzes dont match up. If you dont already have a good basic understanding of chem and the math thats used, then take someone else.
While she is the only chemistry teacher I have studied under, Dr. Henderleiter is an incredible professor. In a lecture hall of 80 students, it's obvious she cared about each of us. She is incredibly concise in her teaching so you know exactly what to expect on exams and homework.
Super nice person but she doesn't teach the material very well. Having a hard time doing the homework due to her not teaching the material. Very confusing and hard to follow
The homework and tests don't match the notes which makes this class extremely hard. Her lectures are kinda pointless because she'll bring stuff up that won't ever be used. The homework and tests have things on them that were never discussed and she expects you to know how to do them even when you weren't taught
Dr. H is very boring but is helpful when you ask. The exams are nothing like the review and she puts things that you never learned on it. She is a very unfair grader and gives the people who are lazy more chances to bring their grade up and the good students just get what they get. I would highly suggest avoiding her as a teacher.
I loved Julie!! She really cares about students so much, and as long as you put in the effort for chemistry, she will help you succeed in this class. I will genuinely miss her because she was so nice and motivational for me to do well in chemistry.
Dr. Henderleiter is so understanding and kind. The content is hard, but she is always willing to help if you reach out. I would email her and get a response pretty quickly with a long response, making sure I understood everything. She posts modules with lecture videos and some assignments, and those along with the quiz/test are due weekly.
Dr. H is a fantastic prof! She is very caring and cares about her students succeeding. She extended many assignments this semester to give her students an opportunity to succeed. You definitely need to put in effort to succeed, I mean it is a chem class!! I would highly recommend her.
very helpful during labs and always ready to answer questions, good explanations at the beginning of lab, would definitely recommend
She is really nice and tries to help when she can. People were often confused (not sure if it was her or the material). She is easy to reach outside of class. She often gives papers for us to work on in class alone or with others. Assessments were harder than what we learned in class or the homework.
I had her for lab and she was great! She helped us a lot and really cared about our grades and wanted us to succeed. I didnt really like chem but I really liked her labs! Definitely suggest you take her lab if you can!
She is very helpful if you ask and has many different ways of helping you understand the basics. I was nervous going into chem because I didn't take it in highschool but she made it very easy to learn.
