Mrs. Hess is great. She's very smart and sometimes hard to follow. She rules!!
Talks in circles, very hard to follow
She always went the extra mile! Take her class, it is much better than Sammons!!
Excellent teacher! That's all there is to say.
Always makes sure that EVERYONE understands the material.
She seems pretty nice, but she gets really impatient. Kinda irritating.
she's nice and helpful but not always organized with notes and examples
very enthusiastic

best teacher in the world
Very smart and knows her stuff, but hard to follow where she is going with it a lot of times
not the best explainer, somewhat confusing
She's very available to help anyone dedicated to their studies.
average, but hot
Not organized. Didn't like being put in groups and there was way too much talking without getting to the point. Nearly impossible to pay attention.
I'm in the middle on this lady she teaches well but seems to forget not everyone learns the same way and she always marked me down for doin things differently than her
Mrs. Hess is very nice and helpful. She knows her stuff and is willing to help out no matter what. Not only is she very intelligent she is really HOT!
I took the internet course, W2005. She was VERY helpful and responded to all my questions within 24 hours. She also seemed VERY organized to me. Some questions were a little unclear on the tests, but she is VERY fair. I got an A, not difficult, but the group projects s*ck. She is Awesome teacher!
Mrs. Hess was very helpful and very polite. I really enjoyed the class and she seemed to really care about the students. Calc 2 was tough, but she really got me through it.
Calculus is a challenging class but Julie is very helpful and the online format was great. I was often able to go in to her office and get help and she is very patient and has a great way of making the subject meaningful and she puts it in a way you can u
she is a very nice person. i just do not find her to be very helpful in explaining the homework before we have to do it. i wish she would have better test reviews as well.
I just wish she would do something interesting for once...
I learned alot in the class, she prepares you for teaching and it is a great review for the Basic Skills Test. Very helpful, if you do all your homework and study a little this class is easy
Tips...always come to class the day after a test! She gives extra credit! Also, stay the entire time for exam review even if you understand already. She gives out answers for the test, and it also makes her like you a lot more. Julie is so sweet and she makes this class a lot of fun. She goes out of her way to know everyone.
Awesome teacher! I took this course online and was nervous since my last Math class was 8 years previous. Couldn't have gotten a better prof! She explained everything and was ALWAYS willing to help! Great attitude all around!
She gets her point across in a sweet way. Attendance is a part of your grade and even if you are a minute late you are docked points. I learned a lot in this class, but had difficulty on the tests. You are also graded on homework completion.
She was amazing. I had her for an online course. I was a little nervous but she made everyting crystal clear. Very easy to comprehend. Awesome.
Amazing teacher. Provides very detailed and helpful feedback. It's obvious that she really cares about the success of her students. Attendance and homework are a must. She is very helpful.
Really nice person and has a passion for what she does. I question her clarity sometimes and I know others in my class did as well. She tends to talk/explain things very fast and it can lead to confusion. A lot of hands-on work in the class which was very helpful.
Great teacher. Very helpful.
She uses powerpoint all the time. She goes through an example and expects you to get it right away. Be ready to participate in class, do your homework to get a good grade. Overall not to bad once I learned her teaching style.
I had Professor hess for MA 210. She lives and breathes math!!! She goes 90 miles when she teaches. I had a very hard time with this class because I learned "old school"math and this class teaches new school w/ manipulatives. She will stay after or use her office to help I would recommend a tutor is you are not a fast learner and to do your homework
It was an online class, she was very supportive and helpful with a subject/class that was very difficult (for me)!
Great teacher! She was helpful and she knows her stuff! I had her online for 107 and am looking forward to having her online again for 131!
very upbeat. nice, always willing to help. a lot of group work in class, and about 20 online homework problems per class period. very nice lady and good professor!
Julie Hess is a fantastic professor! I loathed math before her class and now I want to pursue elementary ed. and major in math. She is very helpful in and out of class. She wrote a BEAUTIFUL letter of recommendation for me. Be prepared for a lot of group work. Choose your table wisely! Stay on top of the homework.
DON'T take her! She is not understanding, and doesn't do anything for the students. She uses an expensive online access that does all the teaching for her, she does nothing but transfer the grades to records. There was an issue with the online company, and all she did was write me a huge email explaining how incompetent I was..I'll never recommend!
(BUSY, Adult student)She is one of the best teachers I have had. I am not that great at Algebra, and taking it online scared me. She worked me through everything, and responded to all of my questions quickly! I met her for extra help, and she would send me encouraging emails after tests. She cares about you, your grades and is understanding.
does nothing. all she does is makes us use a site and transfers grades over. does not teach her self. gets paid to sit on her ass
online 107. Easy A. Definitely take her online class over any in class lecture. Let's you repeat homework until you get 100% and tests are easy if you look at the reviews she gives.
this was my first online math class,i will admit i was scared at first but after having her as a teacher, i am very impressed. she is always willing to help and she answers pretty quickly. We def take a class with her as my prof again!
Super easy and fun class. She is so loving and generous. She actually cares about her students and their future. AWESOME professor.
Not the hardest teacher out there... Math is super easy for me... Asked her specific questions about Calc 2/3 which she answered for me... Pretty easy class overall... Do the work and you will pass... HW is harder than the tests but tests are 60% of the grade... Has some extra credit at times... Final grade was 101%...
Hess is great with organizing her online class. It definitely isn't a class you can blow off. She responds quickly to emails but has a sassy personality which I didn't find professional. Also, was never clear on grading guidelines for some assignments which was frustrating. Wouldn't take again even though I received an A in the course (hard work).
Loved her! The sweetest and most caring professor I've had at GRCC. She can go a little fast and this makes the material confusing at times, but she is always willing to help and encourages students to get help during her office hours. Replies to e-mails super fast. She also lets you attempt the hw as many times as you want before the due date.
Very nice teacher. She does not do much teaching in the online class as most info is provided by the Thinkwell website you use instead of a textbook. Julie returns emails quickly and was always helpful. I recommend her and this class!
Let me start by saying that it is not ALL Professor Hess's fault. I will say I dont like her grading scale, as she bases your grade 55% on tests, 20% on your finals, but still grades you on homework quizzes and group projects. I found doing pre calc online was very hard, even if she did answer questions quickly. Hard class for average math people.
Class started on Monday, 3 chapters of homework, 1 six page workbook, a test, and quiz assigned ON MONDAY and due FRIDAY AT NOON! I'll be avoiding her classes like the plague from now on
If you are not the greatest at math, of course this class might be hard. Professor Hess will take the time to help if you need it though. I enjoyed using thinkwell, because I can re-watch the videos.
I never met Prof. Hess in person but the few times I ever had to contact her by email, I usually received a response in under an hour. She posts helpful practice tests prior to the exams that helped me to go into the tests with confidence. Each quiz had an extra credit question, so my quiz average was actually above 100%.
I really loved Professor Hess. Even though I took the class online I always felt like she was really engaged in the class and was there to answer any questions I might have had. I didn't do as well as I would have hoped, but its calculus. I can't expect her to be a miracle worker. Overall, I would definitely take her class again, and recommend her
Hess doesnt teach the online class, but writes the homework & tests. Her explanations are wordy and hard to follow. The tests are full of trick questions and content that wasnt in the videos. The Thinkwell materials are excellent. If you need Calculus 1 & 2, subscribe to Thinkwell and then take the CLEP for credit. Dont bother with GRCC.
Julie Hess was great with replying to e-mails or phone calls. Since this was an online class, everything was done online, using Thinkwell. The online instructor Edward Burger is incredibly nerdy and his cheesy sense of humor can grow to be obnoxious. Because there's few tests, they're heavily weighted toward your final grade.
I had her for online pre-calculus. She was very reliable to contact through email and provided good feedback if you didn't understand the lecture (video - by professor Burger). It was online through thinkwell, so if you have experience with that type of class then I would recommend it.
Mrs. Hess is a very caring woman. The book is needed for the online code, but code can be purchased separately (recommended) i barely used the actual book. All homework is done online. Can do as many times as needed to get 100%. Tests are fairly difficult though. I would definitely take her again though.
Although I never met Julie, I enjoyed her online precalculus class. She didn't teach anything--it was all through a program called Thinkwell, but she emailed her students and gave feedback on exams. Based on that limited communication, Julie seemed like a nice lady. She also responded to emails crazy fast.
I was skeptical about taking an online math class, but this one was very clear. You have to buy an access code for a website that provides you with great videos, homework that you can redo, HW quizzes, and then tests (have to take in person). Professor communicates weekly, really does care, and was willing to answer my questions. Instant grading.
Ms. Hess is a very caring woman and explains the math curriculum very well. She has you team up with your table mates to write problems on the board and to do review together. My only issue is that she will mark you down for the most simplest mistakes on your test, so be careful and overexplain.
I'm lost for words, I was late for class 7 minutes, this woman graded me for that. I said no problem It happens, but not giving your students a good lecture and getting mad at them when they ask a question?. I was going to drop the class, but I want to challenge her and pass the class, but I would not recommend her.
I LOVED MRS. HESS! I wish she was teaching Calc 1 and 2 in the summer! She was always willing to set aside more time for the students. She always asked if anyone had questions. Her homework was set up in weeks. You have one assignment tuesday and one thursday and they were due the following tuesday! Lots of time to work on it, but don't fall behind
Love this woman! Honestly, I'm a lost cause when it comes to math but this woman will help you until the very end. One night I emailed her so stressed and she asked me what questions I didn't understand then she sent me multiple videos of her doing examples step by step! She's incredibly caring.
super nice lady, very willing to help in, and out of class. good instructor. not too much homework, but enough to get the material
This was an online class done through Thinkwell. This was the best online class experience I have ever had. Professor Hess is by far one of the best. She was always open to helping students and answered emails very quickly. I would very highly recommend her to anyone.
Julie is a solid professor. She definitely knows the material, and is willing to help after hours. The labs that we did where okay; I mean, they got the point across, but a lecture would of done just fine. Her lectures were scattered. She would "run" thru them. Also, tests are based on the lectures more than the book. You'll see what I mean.
I took precalculus with Hess, and it was basically college algebra combined with intro trigonometry. Would recommend going into the course with strong algebra abilities as she races through the lectures without allowing you to really understand the concepts (not her fault, there is a lot to cover). She is very approachable, kind, and knowledgeable.
Before taking this class, I was dreading calculus. Now I love calculus! The online lectures Professor Hess used were entertaining, and the homework helped me understand the material. Professor Hess responded quickly to my emails and helped me work through any problems I had. I loved the online format, and would definitely recommend this professor!
professor hess is very rude and is not understanding at all. I would expect her to be more forgiving especially since so many people are already not comfortable with online school. I made mistake while typing in my answer on a quiz because the website she has us use is so slow and glitchy. I emailed her and asked if she could fix the point and nope
The bulk of the class is taught via modules on Thinkwell in a pretty robust and straightforward manner. Practice tests are great preparation for the real thing (proctored w/ Respondus during COVID and I think in person normally), and Professor Hess is incredibly fast to respond to emails and caring. Highly recommend.
prof hess is a nice individual but wanted things to be very specific. i had asked for help extra help on monday which is assigned for extra help and she basically made me feel bad for asking for the help she offered. on my final she marked me down for 50% of the grade i got because i didn't show everything that she wanted, when what i had was rt.
Whole course just through Thinkwell can work ahead if you want
If you keep up with homework assignments and redo them until you get %100. Then the tests are not so hard to get good grades on.
Julie was a pretty good professor, however I don't reccomend you take her class online. She mostly just proctors tests and leaves the teaching to an online module. Maybe this is just a "me" thing but I want the prof of the class I'm paying for to teach me.
I had her for a virtual class. The class was taught through the Thinkwell and I really enjoyed it. There are videos you watch to understand the concept and do the homework. She goes over the lesson every week on Fridays. She always encourages us(student) to ask question. She also emails back very quickly. Do the practice test to prepare for test.
Does not teach anything. Sends you to a pre recorded video program. When you reach out to her for clarification she is not helpful, tells you to go back and read the syllabus. Why even pay her she is not teaching.
Condescending.
She may be better if you have an on-campus class but she is not very good at online courses. She uses Thinkwell which can be VERY specific and a minor error can cost you points. She also does not go over your tests after you take them to fix any errors. When you ask for help she may just send you a youtube video or tell you to look at blackboard.
Worst professor ever. She expects you to work ahead before the class even officially starts. She is not willing to help you if you are new to the program. She is unwilling to help you in person, she takes no late work no matter what the reason,. AVOID her at all cost. She may look nice but she is NOT a good teacher and is NOT nice at ALL.
She doesnt teach, she just writes tests. Lectures are from pre-recorded video from decades ago Class is graded mostly on tests so you need to do well on those. She gives you infinite tries on the homework so 100% the homeworks and practice tests, youll do fine on the real tests Class is mostly easy except for a few topics Grade is A as of now
Dropped me from my class after I told her textbook was on backorder. Had done an assignment proving my attendance, and had emailed her letting her know I was unable to start. Instead of trying to help where she could, she was condescending and rude. Asked me to buy a copy of it with my personal money instead. Then dropped me when I was unable to.
Professor Julie Hess was on the look out for questions, doubts or concerns. I personally liked her efficiency answering questions through email. I got a low score because of personal problems but she was so thoughtful about that. She was great!
This class was my most difficult class this semester and it isn't even related to my major. Her videos are not helpful; I just youtubed everything.
she's a great person but she rushed through everything like we were always behind even when we weren't and in an extremely difficult calc class it was so hard to keep up. an assignment on blackboard due after every class but there wasn't weekly tests. homework is 55% of the final grade so if you can keep up on it you're fine but it's a lot
The online course had tons of practice problems which gave you a great understanding of each topic. If I remember right you get multiple attempts at the quizzes while the exams are done in person which included no trick or surprise questions.
She was incredibly picky about online testing. She was very meticulous on me using loose leaf paper and having my computer screen at a certain angle in order to see what I was writing and that I wasn't cheating. However, she was incredibly responsive and helpful to my emails, and we were able to work ahead in class.
Very nice teacher. If you ever need help, she's always there for her office hours. For Calc III we had about 25ish homework problems every week. No late work.
Mrs Hess only bonus is she is good at responding to emails. Online testing is the absolute worst with her. Everything has to be perfect and if you don't show your work “correctly” she won't give you credit. Because that means you're cheating.
