Great instructor, very funny. Had a great time in class and learned alot. Be prepared to get spooked... she sees ghosts!
Her obvious mental and emotional instability gets in the way of any coherant teaching you might hope to get out of the class. It's also hard to take her seriously after seeing her unicorn paintings.
I graduated.....I hated Lieberman with a passion. Horrible teacher. She is about as responsible as your average college student. She thinks she is a college student.
I thought she was a rad, hot teacher. We had fun and got a lot of work done.
Tough love. If you suck, she will tell you plain as day. You Suck. Your work sucks. You are drawing like you hate drawing. What the hell is wrong with you. Don't display it unless its worth looking at. I love her.

I am sort of on the fence on Julie. I like her a lot as a person, but as a teacher, she can sometimes be unclear. She is unflinching in her criticism, but that is not a bad thing. Be prepared to be critiqued with an iron hand!
Hmm...I like that fact that Julie is very blunt and to the point when critiquing work, that's certainly something you don't encounter enough at this school. However, I do agree with those who have said that she plays favorites; I feel that she even picks on some people. I really don't feel to strongly about her one way or the other.
Picks favorites, can be mean, and doesn't teach. I basically paid $3,000 for her to show me websites that I could've looked at myself.
I had her a few years ago, before I switched majors. I thought she was fairly adequate as a teacher, and she never made fun of me all though I did good work. She made this really smart and sensitive girl cry during a brutal critique. If you do something stupid, or do any "highschool" work, be prepared to be put down.
I appreciated that Julie was very honest in pre-critiques and final critiques. I like her as a person, but she was a little intimidating at times. As long as you do the work, and give insightful responses in critques, the class is fun.
Spent new years with her and it was real Fun, knew her from her VCU days, and she is a lot older now
Julie is the by far the worst professor in that department. She cancels class for no reason and doesn't make an effort to help her students. She plays favorites, and is extremely temperamental. Her critiques are honest, but she is very disrespectful. Its one thing to be honest, its another thing to enjoy tearing students down.
everyone has a different experience with her. she can teach you everything about art and make you not ever want to make art again, all at once. It is true that her honesty borders on rudeness. If you can get through the frustration, by the end of portfolio, you will learn a lot. take what she says with a little bit of salt. can be a flake at times.
She might be a pain sometimes but I've produced my best products in her class mainly because of her honesty...sometimes her critiques are harsh but they are always to help you, not to hurt you. She prepares you for reality-no art director is going to be soft on you-she knows what shes talking about and if you ask for help she'll go out of her way.
Julie is a horrible teacher if she's just doing a lecture course - she copy and pastes sites like Wikipedia into lectures, and frankly doesn't do her job at all. However, for studio courses, she's pretty decent. She'll give you good critiques, and you'll actually learn something.
I've had Julie for several classes, and theres a reason for that. She's my favorite teacher at SCAD. She is honest, but isn't that what you want? Who needs a teacher that will just say "its great" when its crap? Don't turn in something you haven't actually tried on, and you won't have to worry. She's a great teacher, and I highly recommend her.
I don't know what's everyone's problem with Julie. Seriously she is one of the friendliest professors I've had. She tends to be in a quite good mood and smiles all the time (seriously she is anything but "mean.") Her class is more like a conversation rather than a lecture (those are the best.) You will learn a lot from her.
I've graduated from SCAD in fall 2008. I've had her a couple of times while I was there and wish I had more classes with her. Yes, she is brutally honest for critiques but it's better that way for the real world. One thing though is that her mood affects her teaching. Good mood= good times. She's like mom too because she cares for her students.
I took her for Survey. She did not follow the syllabus which means she often surprised the class by asking for homework. To add to the confusion there is no textbook. She acts tough by saying "Im not afraid to tell you your work looks like****" but then she gossips a lot during lectures and says "don't tell anyone I said that or I might get sued."
Worst professor I've ever had. Rude, selfish, temperamental (for no reason), never gave any demos, creates laughable artwork, impatient, and initiates conflict with students who don't share her political views.
Julie is very brutally honest, and she can be quite moody. However, this woman knows her stuff, and if you let her, she can really nurture you creatively. She is tempermental, and her moods definitely affect how she will teach class that day. But I would always take brutal honesty over a pat on the back, she just wants you to be great.
don't bother.
I think Julie is really nice as a person and also as a professor, she is very friendly. Its true that she is very honest but so far thats what we expect from to professors so we can learn. Also, Julie is like a mother she really cares for her students, she helped me a lot in some personal problems and I really value that. I love her!
I highly recommend her! she is one of my favorites professors.
Nice try trying to make Julie's rating go up. She is a horrible professor, person, you name it!
oh please *rolls eyes*. dont take her, waste of time...take mohamed or kurt, or even daniel.
Well, I have had her twice prior to taking her for portfolio...I can say I realize why I take her, its because she is trying to make you a better illustrator with her harsh criticism and bluntness. That being said, I actually did not like the format of the portfolio class it is easy to get behind and not organized at all.
In my opinion she is one of the best professors of the Illustration department. Her classes are great! she takes out the best of you. Besides she is gorgeous, such a lollipop.
She encourages you to be your best and doesn't let you get away with working below your ability. She truely cares abou making you your best. She can come across as being mean. She is just pushing you to expand. She will be honest with you, don't be afraid to cry.
SHE IS AMAZING!!! and extremely beautiful.
A lot of people will tell you Julie is mean, but she's just critical. She won't accept less than your best which is great. Unfortunately, her class is so unorganized and she is so wishy washy about what is going on that I wouldn't recommend her.
For someone who does such terrible artwork she sure has an easy time being critical of others. On top of that she's not organized, she gossips during lectures, doesn't follow the syllabus and never gave demonstrations which is kind've lazy of her considering I paid $3000 to take her class.
She is a very tough teacher so grow some thick skin before taking her class. She gets good work out of people, but dont take her if you arent willing to work. She is sometimes a little unclear, but verify what you need and you will be just fine. Julie is great!
She pushes you to do your best. This is about the only good thing people say about her. There's more to being a good teacher than simply acting tough and cracking the whip on the students. Things like respect, organization, following the syllabus, clear instructions and demonstrations also count for a lot.
great teacher! she knows everybody you want to know!
I'm always amazed at people who say Julie is mean. Apparently they have no backbone and think their artwork is perfect. Julie always gives constructive criticism. She has never been mean. She says the truth unlike most professors. The class is exciting, challenging, fun, and hard work. Not easy, but if you love illustration then she is the best!
She is extremely gorgeous!!
She knows a lot of really big names in the industry and constantly name drops. She's pretty tough, but totally fair and clear in her criticism. If your work doesn't meet her standard, you'll do it again until it does. You can try to argue with her, but you'll never win, just save your breath and listen to what she says, she means well.
Julie cares about her students and will work with you as much as you need, in order to put together an incredible portfolio to really show off your strengths. She's straightforward, but NOT rude. Listen to her, she really knows what she's talking about! Julie pushes you to do your best in her class. Work hard & pay attention, it's worth it!
Julie is Amazing. She's fierce, motivating, passionate. Its not just about the grades, its about the work, the experience, the meat of it. Her critiques are honest. She knows eeeveryone. She is NOT mean, but she is tough. Real for sure, she's got an artists soul and is dedicated to excellence in her students work and growth as people.
Julie is really a wonderful teacher. She is clear and direct in critiques which is helpful, though painful. Her connections to renowned illustrators are really helpful as well- eg. most of the ones who come to present. She gets off the syllabus at times but as long as you pay attention and don't miss class its not a problem.
Not worth it, especially for survey, in a way, she pretends to be a good professor with out actually being one
It's true Lieberman is hard on critiques, but you are given a chance to correct your work. The real downfall of Lieberman is her lack of organization and clarity. The syllabus isn't followed, and class is one big conversation of rabbit trails, so you can't tell what is the lesson and what isn't. An unorganized professor is a headache.
She overwhelm you with your hw and constantly not offer you a lecture and send you back home early.
Hardly teaches. Derails the class schedule for political discussion, and by that I mean trying to make anyone who disagrees feel bad. Isn't organized but expects you to be. Cuts your grade for not following her 'suggestions'. Gossips nonstop, and tries to act like your friend to take your mind off the money you wasted. Mediocre artist.
Doesn't host too much of a professional environment. Highly promotes class discussion. Does her best to help you if having difficulties but… isn't helpful. Take home test. Lots of note taking. Goes off on many tangents. Great stories. Very very knowledgable. Assignments aren't clear - not written down or printed out on a piece of paper.
Her class is very easy if you don't get behind, fun and you learn a lot! I'm so glad I took this class. Professor Lieberman is so awesome!!!!!!!!
A wonderful professor who adds unique insight into life and illustration. Her critiques are very helpful and her knowledge of technical elements will really improve your work. Her class discussions are fun and engaging. I learned a lot from her class about illustration history and will use my notes in the future. Great professor! Highly recommend
Talks about herself and her own success, however isn't at all interested in YOUR success. Picks the most random favorites and is jealous of her students futures. Take someone who actually cares about you. taking her is like taking a class from a wanna be popular highschooler
This book class was so important for me, I learned so much. Prof. Lieberman is an amazing teacher, it's so impressive the way she alters her teaching style to fit different students' learning needs. She loves her students & commands their respect. She has a strong sense of herself, & voices her critiques in a clear, concise, and confident manner.
I've always heard that Julie was tough, but cared about your work and pushed you to your limits. I'm not sure if I caught her at a bad time, but this class was one of the most uninspiring courses I've taken at SCAD. You have one quarter to make an entire book, and it was not worth the money. Professor Lieberman is a self-focused name dropper.
Really knows how to get the most out of her students. Uses different teaching methods to reach more students. Very straightforward, very smart, very talented, very respected. Many of the students in my class said she definitely helped them become better illustrators.
First of all, she never fixes her syllabus. I could not get any information from it because it was too old. Second, she touches student artwork on photoshop in critique. And her skill is horrible. Third, she never accepts that her knowledge is wrong. last, her test is all essay based, vague questions and you only get 2 points from it. WASTE.
Take Lieberman with a grain of salt. She's a better mentor than she is a teacher. She's straightforward, sometimes a little blunt. Her critiques are valid but remember so are yours; if you have a strong argument to justify why you did something in a piece, she'll most likely back down and respect what you do. She does namedrop but its networking
Julie is great! She's never afraid to be honest with critique, but she's not mean. Truly wants to help you become a better artist.
I had Julie for both Survey and Book, and I adore her. She gives great feedback and is always offering to help if you have any questions. Her critiques are very constructive and honest - and even though they may SEEM harsh, they are not. They are extremely beneficial! She's really funny and is one of my favorite professors at SCAD.
She's the best
Her book illustration class was fun, beneficial and useful. The class might be a little tough but you still learn a lot.
Julie is an extraordinary professor who is very honest and lively. She gives good feedback, very knowledgeable about the market and artists in it so you will get a lot of useful suggestions. Sometimes she has no filters and can say something that seems rough, but don't be pushed back, she's actually really cool and you can learn a lot.
She is very knowledgeable in book illustration and taught us full page spreads, double page spreads, and type layout. Her feedback is amazing and always offers ideas on not only WHAT might need improving, but HOW TO improve your work. She is very student-centric and cares deeply about helping students do their best work. I highly recommend her.
Discussion based class, difficult if you keep to yourself. She seems like a sweet lady but I find her energy to be over the top and hard to deal with sometimes. Always asks more questions in response to answers given by students. Will call you out for being quiet. Not a hard class, but I found Julie to be a bit much as a professor.
Her tests are take home and shes made them easier than before. Its hard to do poorly, unless you dont try. You need to memorize her definitions for things, google wont get you anywhere with her. She really just wants to see that you put in effort. You will have 8 notebook homeworks where you research about 7 artist, its not hard.
Survey of Illustration Class: She either likes you or doesn't, and makes constant snap judgments. It's her way or the highway so to survive always agree with her. If she doesn't like you good luck. Marks you down just because she can. She has no qualifications, she is a professor because she knows many famous artists personally.
Julie will always do her best to make sure you are not stressed out! She has so many crazy stories about illustrators she's known and is very knowledgable about art history. Her classes are discussion based and she will call you out if you don't actively participate and speak up at least once in class. She's high energy and fun!
Doesn't offer great or helpful feedback to actually make your work better - but will tear your work apart in the critique. Very kind and gives a lot of good resources. Just wish she would be more helpful before the critiques.
Julie is fantastic. She has a lot of experience in the field and really knows what she's talking about. The notebook project is the majority of the work, and it only takes an hour or two at most. Easy tests too. Highly recommend.
all of her projects have a fast turnaround schedule, so be prepared to have max a week to make an illustration. there are a good amount of grading opportunities so if you don't do too hot on one project you'll have a few more to bring that grade up. she says she understanding, but if you're behind on work she tell you to have better time management
I believe Julie cares about the success of her students. However, I feel as if her ego gets in the way of her teaching abilities at times. Critiques often turn more into her needing to prove that shes right as opposed to a discussion with the whole class. Though she is an experienced educator, she could benefit from some humility and patience.
If you care about her and the material she has to share, she cares about you. Her respect is definitely earned. There's a lot to pay attention to, but it's worth it. Engaging in class with active discussion is important. She has made time for me outside of class many times, even once I was no longer her student. Overall, very positive experience.
Irrational, subjective scoring. Note this: Double works in 1 week. Poor time management. Repeated vague, unconstructive instructions. She forget her feedbacks, u redraw 6 times. She imposing her own ideas. Do what she ask completely and unconditionally, 100, otherwise, low point. This is manipulative. I got 100 once, but at what cost? Be her puppets.
Easily the worst class I have ever taken. For each 2.5 hr class she spends at least 1 hr telling useless personal anecdotes that read more like bragging. Has to be right, is not open to any debate that leads to a conclusion she doesn't like. Frequently gives unclear instructions, will blame you for any problems even if they are her fault.
her critiques are vague and at times harsh. she also has made me redraw things multiple times. the requirements for what we need & when were unclear, so half the class was not where they needed to be by midterms. she does care about her students though.
Liberman is smart. I agree with a lot of her critical insight. However, as a professor she is incredibly difficult. She makes a lot of students feel stupid (many redoing their projects/ideas many times.) She needs to be right, even interupting TA's/Faculty presentations to "correct" them. Be ready to cringe at the way she talks to people.
Reading these other reviews, I'm glad I wasn't the only one to find Julie to be a bit rude and condescending in the way she speaks to students. I didn't find her to be a difficult grader in Book Illu, and some of her feedback was helpful, but the way she spoke to my peers irked me on a daily basis. She interrupts a lot and gets quite snippy.
Very below average class and and lectures. All the assignments felt like busy work. The final project got in the way when I had other more important studio finals to deal with.
Clear grading criteria, LOVELY, funny, a little crazy. Direct constructive critique. Lots of grading opportunities. Tries to make class as entertaining as she can despite lecture. Brings snacks to class occasionally :) She truly cares and is so knowledgeable
Julie is easily my favorite professor from SCAD. She really invests in her students and clearly wants to push you to succeed. If you're not willing to invest effort, you may fall behind, but if you put your best foot forward she will always encourage you. She loves vocal classes and participation which fosters a very fun and engaging environment.
Julie is a very kind and personable professor. I loved that she was straight-forward and honest with me, in a loving and caring sort of way! She was very encouraging throughout the entire quarter and I loved going to her classes. She is very knowledgable about the book industry and is a joy to be around! LOVE YOU JULIE!!!!
Julie is such a caring and sweet professor. She is honest about her feedback and makes the classroom a welcoming and friendly environment. She truly cares about her students and wants to see them succeed. I took her for Historical and Contemporary Illustration and her assignments were easy to understand and fun to do. Would def take her again.
Julie is one of the most unpleasant people I've ever met. Her instructions are riddles and she will berate you for not understanding and she will rip you apart in critique over projects SHE approved and encouraged. She is out of touch with current markets and has no place teaching a course where that is what majority of students are interested in.
Julie absolutely does care about her student's work and has the potential to be a great professor, but her ego is out of control. If you disagree with her on your work, she will berate and publicly humiliate you in critique for things she previously approved. If you want good grades, apply her "suggestions", even if they're poor/out of touch.
Julie had a lot of good insight into the book illustration industry and was open with the ways we created our books. Sometimes it was really hard to get solid answers about due dates. She can give good feedback, but sometimes can get defensive about her opinions. This class was a good experience but requires a lot of patience.
I have not received constructive and useful feedback on my work from her. There are no clear instructions for assignments, need to go through a lot of folders to collect the information on what to do for the project and it is still very uncleared. her organized skill is a tragedy. it is the first time that I have not enjoyed my class at all.
her words like riddles
I really love Julie! Before taking her class, I was worried about her strictness, but it turned out to be unfounded. When I completed the first assignment, she gave me honest feedback, saying my work was good but anyone could draw it, and encouraged me to find my own style.I can say she changed my life.
Fragmented, repetitive, unconstructive feedback.Irrational, biased toward a specific rendering style. Privileged, racist white woman.Discriminated against Chinese.Told her Chinese TA she disliked classes with many Chinese students. Publicly stated preference for classes with more white students.Blaming students for wrong due day.
If you wanna ask for many questions about drawing, she loves to answer and help you!! Btw, not like one student said things about Chinese students. She respects all races, and treats everyone equally!! Don't take it personal if she judges your work harshly, she is a strict professor, and she is really professional!!
If you want an easy professor for illu history take her, if you follow what she asks you'll get a good grade idk how you can get a low grade in her class. Barely any hw too just notebooks, 2 art projects, presentation, and no tests/quizes. However her critiques are bad and doesn't give any feed back and if she does it doesn't make any sense
The way Prof sets up her class and grading criteria is disorganized. She says out of pocket things often and the way she grades seems arbitrary and inconsistent. She has strong opinions about your art that sometimes conflict from class to class, but you must follow the advice to get a good grade. She's passionate and knowledgeable, but not great.
Be careful with your projects 💀
Julie definitely means well with her intentions, but the reviews are accurate. Everything is very disorganized and unclear, and discussions are so theoretical it becomes hard to follow. When you don't understand these discussions, you get weirdly put on the spot and embarrassed. She's kind, but she doesn't realize when she's being belittling.
She's considerate if you talk to her. She's an easy grader on visual projects and knows you've got other classes to attend that are studio-heavy, so she genuinely doesn't want to add to that. She's a storyteller, and if you're the type to have stopped reading completely in 5th grade then you may not like that. But I really enjoyed her.
never again
She was beyond unorganized, never put assignment instructions in the actual assignment tab, and due dates were different in every single location. She also loves to talk about herself for entire class periods. She got onto our entire class for misunderstanding her instructions and doing assignments incorrectly :) Students beware.
Prof is passionate but disorganized. She frequently forgets her own due dates, and has inaccurate/contradicting due dates on assignment sheets vs submissions vs what she says in class. She changes critique on a whim as well, saying something completely different than the previous class. She would frequently grab my shoulder without my consent.
