Extremely disorganized, gives out a course outline in the 2nd week that she doesn't even follow. Slacks off during class by giving extended break and cutting class time short. Does not hand back work on time. Talks out of her butt. Worst professor I have ever had.
Missed three classes! Was never clear on anything Makes things deliberately complex. Teaches easy cases and will enjoy giving hardest and longest on the tests & Exams, then enjoys watching you miserable. V. Hard marker. expects you to have good knowledge in Tax & Audit :S takes a month to return mark. teaches at different places - CONFUSED
Though there were times where the details were lost in the lecture, Julie did offer great tips/tricks in the end. Very hard marker, but if you pay attention to her expectations, you will get rewarded accordingly. I learned a lot in this class.
Really bad lecturer. She goes on forever about nothing and repeats herself for the whole class. She also loves to make stupid jokes that are not funny. Breaks are way to long. Her PP slides for case writing are very good. She is an easy marker, but beware her final exam is impossible to finish. Ethics part of the course is a joke.
A really bad prof and I echo the previous statements. Knows accounting but can't understand the questions people are asking because her communication skills are so poor. I had straight A's and A+'s until I hit her class. Try to get another prof but not if it will delay your degree or designation.
The best you can get for 504. Shapiro scared me away and I was more then happy with Julie. She has a tendency to ramble on about absolutely nothing but overall a fair prof. Test and assignments are fair but exam was tough.
this prof is cool .... the class average is C+ to B-, way better than the class average for the other acc profs at ryerson which is a D-, oops I mean an F average. yeah she talks alot, but if you listen it is all course related, she doesn't read off the powerpoints like the other profs, she uses real life examples. I highly recommend her.
Most time of the classes are just talk about herself, such as harky game, her son, her coffee, and her markers. Many of the contents do not cover.
By far the best prof for this course. She is laid back and fun. She is a fair marker. Her tests are long, but what do you expect in a case based course. She gets distracted easily in lectures and tends to go off topic, but her stories are interesting. If you can take it in summer. Its the most relaxing accounting course you can take in the summer.
Juliy is ok teacher. Explanations are not that clear and you need to practice a lot on yourown. BUT as I know all accounting teacher dont expalin a lot in clas and you need to spend at least 10 hours per chapter to pass. Her tests and exam are fine- they are easier that ones of other prof! In general, she is not bad, just study and you will be ok.
easy marker but lacks patience and teaching/explaining abilities...which makes it difficult to ask her a question and even more difficult to get a straight answer (she makes excuses and/or diverts to another topic, mainly sports) if u do the hwmk problems from the textbook, you'll be fine. u wont learn anything from her.
hard course study alot for it. harder than fin300, the really hardest materials comes after the midterm which is chapter 7-12 the longest and most difficulut chapters are 7&9 know them by heart
Don't bother going to class, just get the solution manuals and study at home. Exams are fair, but she's a easy marker, would definitely take another class with her. There's bonus marks for names of her kids.
This is indeed one of the hardest accounting courses so far. Julie is good with explaining the theory but she will not go through the detailed problem solving approaches. She only reads of the power point slides..I would not recommend this proff for this class, in her class you have to learn on your own..
She's a really good prof. She might come off as a bit rude and arrogant but overall I liked her teaching style. She spends a lot of time reviewing and going over the homework. The mid term was EXTREMELY easy I was SHOCKED so many people failed. The only way you can fail her midterm is if you don't even bother opening the textbook.
Not bad,Some surprises in the test,But keep in touch with her,You will be able to survive.
Not a bad teacher,But if you work hard you will be fine,Try keep on touch with her,Some surprises in the exam
Very good prof. She is very helpful.
awful - rude, arrogant. doesnt thoroughly explain the hmwk, only reads the answers. makes you feel stupid for asking questions, therefore people are afraid to ask. kicks people out of the classroom if hwm isnt done. seems like she DOES NOT want to be there. i would not recommend this prof at all!
McDonald does not use the whiteboard. She relies on the Word document with the answers for every class. She's gutsy and tries to make classes fun, but fails. She comes off as entirely unprepared for classes. She's unwilling to use the whiteboard to teach, to visually show concepts, so students are left to rely on only the textbook for help.
She is arrogant: her favorite phrase was: I have a life and it doesn't include you guys. Her attitude is the worst. She was literally throwing midterm papers at us. Midterms were very easy; the final was a killer, MCQs & 4 problems. She also included material from acc414 in the final. Classes are useless.
Do the homework! Practice using the examples from the book! If you don't attempt the questions before class, save your money because you're going to fail. She formats the exams similar to the homework. She is an effective teacher!
Pros: Fair marker, bell curves(especially on the final), she is helpful if you know how to talk to ppl(something that you must learn before graduating a biz school). Midterms are predictable if you do homework. Cons: She does not teach just copies solutions, she has moods. The final is BRUTAL with stuff that you never seen even if you read the book

i think she is good and effective. doing homework is the key to success in this class. Majority of her exam questions came from homework & she'll give you a lot of marks on showing your calculations and using right forms. one thing, She can be rude sometimes.
she's not bad. a fair marker.
Very fair marker. She gives a lot of part marks. Class is only needed if you have done the homework. Otherwise you should not go because the whole class is mainly about taking up work.
she's an easy prof, gives tons of part marks and tests/exams were easy. i recommend you take her.
she's ok. Fair marker, gives part marks if you show your solution. Midterms were easy given that you did all the homework. Best advice to get an A in this course: DO THE QUESTIONS.
She's alright, not big on lecture and mostly takes up homework step-by-step. Do your homework and perhaps a few extras. Midterms will be straightforward and she marks VERY fairly. Final was a bit trickier but nothing over the top. Blunt personality, but a nice prof and can be helpful.
414 is a really hard course, and requires a lot of work, theres no way around that. But Julie was really fair, and didn't throw any random tricks, she will test on you what she will teach you. Anyway, her tests were fair, marking was very fair, and I would really recommend taking her for acc414.
She's mean but fair. Attend class, do all of the assigned readings and homework questions. Do the homework questions BEFORE she takes them up in class because there isn't enough time to copy down the answers.
yes she can be mean. & yes she doesn't reply emails >.<
Honestly, did not learn a single thing in the lectures but if I went to Julie's break out sessions and paid attention, I understood everything (even without looking at the textbook).
She's such a sick teacher, and if you follow along with her during her breakout sessions its really helpful.
Prof Julie is a nice prof!! I didnt find her that rude though. But yes she doesnt reply emails most of the time. I hope she bellcurves the final, it was harder than the 2 midterms..
Prof julie is awesome. I didnt find her that rude. She is helpful & funny too She always tests you based on her assigned homeworks. Some are tricky but absolutely doable. This course is very hard & requires lot of works. Keeping up with the pace will give you the mark you want..
Very fair marker. She gives alot of part marks!I would recommend her, she's entertaining and explains the material clearly.
I don't get all the negative comments. I came to class and watched videos on my laptop and still understood everything she was saying. She a good prof. Explains everything clearly and is their to help if you need it. During the exam, I asked her a question and she answered it clearly. Not bs answer. Very good at teaching too. Strongly Recommended.
very good teacher.. explains everything and gives real life examples.
She is a pretty good prof overall. She makes expectations known and is very fair. Her board work is fairly erratic so make sure you have done the questions and are just checking for accuracy. Also she is fairly negative, but I think that is just her way of motivating students to take the course seriously. If you do your work, this course is easy.
#1 thing for this course: study, read and do exs... w/o that it's gonna be extremely hard to pass with this prof. What she does is mainly go over the content, new content is impossible to understand with her (very fast). Her way to motivate or actually demotivate those who are not interested is by being super (-)... Good luck with the asset side!
i found that she didnt explain things well and was kind of rude towards other students. didn't do to well in her class, and dont really like her teaching techniques.
she is extremely disorganized. She doesn't know how to teach. I won't recommend her
best prof ever
Tough class but she is very fair when it comes to the tests. Do the homework she assigns and you will do just fine. Overall a very nice prof and extremely helpful when you go see her during office hours.
One of the better profs who teaches this course. Provides hints/details about what to expect on mid-term and final. Its highly encouraged to actually do the work and bring questions to class as she is very helpful and resourceful. Has an uncanny sense of humour which keeps lectures interesting.
One of the better profs I have had. I was very nervous about taking this course but Julie made easy to understand. She was somewhat rude at times but only because students would disrespect her by walking in late, walking in front of her while lecturing, being on their phones the wholle class, and not completing the homework. Loved her!
Shes a very nice prof and very helpful. She knows her stuff. She sometimes goes a little fast but if you do your readings and hw, you should be fine.
Such a helpful prof! She's pretty enthusiastic about teaching accounting which is almost mandatory for a 2 hour accounting seminar at 8AM. She never takes you by surprise so take notes when she tells you what will be on the exams and midterms. She does a great job explaining the content!
She's amazing. Very considerate to students and wants you to do well! These are the kind of professors you want, hands down. Especially for an Accounting course, which at times has its struggles. However, she tends to go fast. She's by your side. Take her!!
I found her to be unprofessional. She is very rude towards students. I feel that she doesnt teach the content properly and teaches in a very disorganized manner. I personally wouldnt take another course with her. She is not one of the better profs are ryerson.
Suffers no fools. Does not tolerate juvenile behavior in class. Very professional.
Really knowledgable and good teacher! If you have any questions she will explain thoroughly and help you understand (especially if you go to office hours). Don't take her yelling to the class personally and you will appreciate her. ps make sure to pay attention and not ask non course material questions twice in a row.
This course is hard itself. But if you do all the required textbook questions and understand the material, it's not hard to get at least B. Prof's writing is very messy though, it's hard to follow sometimes. Attend class though, because she gives you hints of what's on the midterm and final, and it's accurate. Just study on a daily basis.
You either love her, or you hate her. She's really straight up with what you should, and shouldn't do. One of the best profs at Ryerson. REMEMBER YOUR CLICKERS!!
She is a realistic professor. You will only get what you put into this course. Many people say she's rude...but that's just her warning you that LIFE AIN'T EASY! Even though I didn't receive the best mark in this class she was still a genuine professor.
For those who are pursuing a major other an Accounting, I would recommend her. She doesn't teach so you gotta read the textbook prior to class as she takes up the homework. The exams is based on her homework, slight curveballs, but overall was doable.
Class average for the midterm was 47% - and she didn't bell curve like all the other profs. Enough Said.
Tough prof!!! Class average for midterm was 55%!!
AMAZING PROF. got 70% on the midterm up from 35% the first time I took the course. Obviously a tough course but if you go to class and do the homework, you will easily pass the class. Happy I got her the second time around.
took this course with the 2nd time with julie and she was great. do all her demo questions and practise them frequently and you will absolutely pass the course. she goes over theory with you and she does problems step by step wit you in class. she can be a bit negative at times but she is defiantly a good prof...
Her lecture is really confusing. You need to self study pretty much. But she is really helpful when you go to her since she can be rude in class. But she cares for her student who works really hard.
Stay away from her acc504 class at any cost. She is extremely disorganized. Her teaching style is confusing. Goes off topic.
She gives out a homework list to do prior to the semester starting and this will be your study guide for the midterm and final exam. A really fair prof and tells you straight up what is and isn't going to be tested or as she says "hints". She's really helpful and is willing to slow down for those that don't understand what she's speaking about.
At first she may be a bit intimidating but she is honestly open to help everyone. For tests, she marks fairly and tries to give points for all the work you did. I did feel like I didn't have enough time for the midterm but she did make the final shorter. Her lectures consist of going through the chapter then taking up homework questions.
She is quite helpful, but kinda mean. So, don't ask something that you can find it from textbook. The practice questions in class are good. Make sure you have to sit in the front rows. Otherwise, you cannot read her words for sure.
Best accounting prof at Ryerson. She's funny and makes accounting bearable. Tough course but come to class and do the bonus problems and you'll pass. She can be a bit blunt which some people take as her as being mean but she's pretty funny. Midterm is hard and will weed out the people who don't put in the work. Final is easier. Go to class to pass.
not easy. not very that great
This class is extremely hard. The midterm was not bad but the finals was next to impossible. Unless you study 15 hrs a week minimum for this course. The Prof gives some hints every now and then and her marking is generous but it is still an extremely hard class. I wish its not a pass or fail finals like at York then Im sure almost everyone pass.
For such a hard course. Ryerson should have better professors. She disrespects and belittles students if they ask questions that she considers are stupid and has temper problems. The final exam was extremely difficult. Does not bell curve. half the students dropped out after the midterm. She should take anger management, profs shouldn't be so rude
Julie is not for the faint-hearted; but she is fair. All these people saying she is rude and difficult are SOFT. Yes, she is blunt and is a tough grader, but as a result it made me study harder and I actually learned something. I'm naturally inclined towards accounting and I put in 9 hours a week to get an A - you'll need to put in more.
run as fast as you can especially if youre a finance major student.
Julie's a fun professor teaching a tough course. She prepares her lectures well and does demo questions on top of them (THIS IS SO IMPORTANT FOR 300). Her cases are marked fairly and she ultimately tells you what she's looking for. She's intimidating at first but when you get to know her you know what a fun prof she is! Would take her for 300.
Julie is not a great prof, but she's better than the alternative. You don't need to listen to her lectures if you read the textbook, the textbook is much better. You'll only need to go to class for is the Demo questions however beware of her chicken scratch writing. It's clear she prepares for the class an hour before.
Does a horrible job at responding to emails. Makes a big fuss about coming in late and would rather trouble a whole row of students for you to get to a seat than to let you quickly pass by the front. Gets off track easily and jokes are not funny. The most frustrating prof I have ever come across. Won't teach any report writing but will test them.
Took this class with here last year, but came to offer feedback for those who are thinking of taking it with her. She reads from her powerpoint slides and is extremely disrespectful to students. She does not care about YOU! More than 50% of the class dropped the course and before final only 20-30% remained. Her exam questions are very difficult
Expect to be on your own - problems you see on the final will never be explained thoroughly in class. You are expected to teach yourself.
Do not expect to learn in her class, you are better off learning everything yourself. What she teaches in class is 5% and that is just her literally reading off the ppt. She is disrespectful to students.
Go to class and make sure you understand and know how to do the problems she does in class. Very fair marker.
Fair marker. Extremely nice. Favorite upper year prof at Rotman. Straight forward and gives you tips on the exam that are extremely helpful. Much better lecturers than the other prof teaching. People from the other class would attend ours to prepare for tests.
very hard marker. If you deviate from her marking scheme, she fails you.
Avoid her at all costs! What the others have said about her being lazy and rude, is true. You won't learn anything in her class and what you learn, will be the research you do on your own. The failure rates in her class is extremely high and she tries to put the blame on the students! Oh, and she takes attendance, like a kindergarten teacher!
No improvements. She remains a tough grader, and makes it harder to pass a course. I mean, why teach when you are to fail more than half a class. It gives me an impression that she has already decided of failing more than half of her class. Dazzled indeed.
Avoid her at all cost!! Not at all helpful.
If u r to use a marking scheme to solve a case, then better make it available to students so that they have a clear idea. Plus she marks so hard and does not really teach. There's more focus on "ourselves" rather than the approach on the case. This is completely bizarre.
Quick to fail, excessively tough marker, vague with expectations. She only provides gists of answers and skips important points. Lectures are NOT beneficial, she skirts detail all the time. You're left to figure out vague but critical points by yourself. Her teaching style relative to test difficulty is ridiculous. Top it off, she's very rude.
I would agree with the comments below. There isnt any help on how to tackle a case. It has to be perfect otherwise it has no value. Some leniency should be there as there is none in this one. Management should do something about this.
Dropped the class after midterm. She expects to answer the cases according to the marking scheme she uses in class which are not available to students. This is unfair. more than half of class dropped or failed the exam.
i will just say- avoid. my sympathies are with all the students who had her in this semester and the semesters to come.
If you can good on her good side and become her favourite, then yes she will answer to you and give your respect. However, if she knows that you are not doing well in class then she will push you down even more, get you to drop the course instead of encouraging students to try harder. Her marking keys are unclear and she just can't teach in general
avoid her classes. be it auditing or accounting, devalues students and is quick in failing them.
the focus is on students and not on the course. Take this course with someone else teaching or in another uni.
a simple no. very blunt and careless.
Avoid at all costs. Majority of the class drops the course after the midterm. She is not helpful, very demeaning, and puts down students all the time. Take ACC414 with Else Greche if you can. At least Else practices problems with you and is very thorough with her marking scheme
The Dean and the school should literally consider if she should continue to teach in this prestigious university. She is careless and rude on so many levels. Very inappropriate approach towards the course and indirectly threatens to fail students.
dont take her. not a good decision at all.
appalled to see her approach towards this course. there isn't any value for money. belligerent behavior through out and finds the slightest to degrade you. Avoid her.
Terrible prof, she is unprofessional, rude and does not care about her students. She needs to learn to be a human being and then maybe she can learn to be a prof. Avoid at all costs!
she takes attendance like a primary school teacher. Plus, a very hard marker. She is not willing to share her marking scheme with students at all. And still expects to know stuff. How is this even possible. All the fourth year profs teaching ACF/ACC are like these. None of them can teach. Management should get rid of them asap.
avoid her. there is no use to attend her classes. doesnt tell how to do cases. no solutions posted either.
the toughest one from every perspective of the course. she has failed Ryerson.
The WORST Prof I have ever had in the last 4 years. This is the first time, I am complaining in this website. she is SOOO rude, doesn't know how to teach. Each week she wastes half of the class time on humiliating the students. She doesn't teach how to do the cases. I think all the students should complain to the faculty advisor. I will.
Julie is strongly knowledgeable about dissecting and analyzing cases, but her lack of tolerance for dissent (difference of opinion to approaching an accounting problem), respect for students can at times create an INTIMIDATING learning environment that discourages classroom discussion. It's never too late to rethink your approach!
One of the worst profs I've ever had. - Doesn't reply to e-mails - Makes you feel stupid for asking questions in class. - 10% of this class is participation but she always chooses to pick students who've already had a chance to participate earlier, which means it's impossible to participate. - Exam questions are nothing like the homework questions
Great experience with this prof having re-taken the course a second time. Cares about the success of her students and answers questions right before an exam. Didnt have office hours though, only downfall.
I took her for multiple accounting courses in the last 2 semesters. It was a nightmare to communicate with her. I dont know why isnt Management looking into this and these comments. Nearly half of her class used to drop out of the course reaching midpoint of the semester. Avoid please.
Julie is very knowledgeable in accounting and auditing but was not the best at passing her knowledge onto students. Created an intimidating environment at times, and was not clear on expectations. Difficult to earn participation marks. She gave some quite rude comments during lectures, however when I visited her office hours, she was very helpful.
She is the worst prof I have ever had in the past four years, she is very rude and does not respect her student. The course material is fine, but the way she is teaching it make it very difficult. She never posts any useful materials online, and obviously, she does not know how to teach students. never take her course unless you have to.
She has the knowledge but she is lack of teaching skills. She showed examples that are from the textbook, but when it comes to the test, it is a lot more complex than the examples. People come to class just to get something beyond the textbook, but if a professor fails to do that. I do not see the point why students need to attend the class.
This current rating of 2.77 (at the time of this rating) is a lot for her. I expected this to be much lower just like her teaching style and approach. She picks her favourites and then the rest of the class has dropped by mid semester. Avoid her if you can.
Worst prof by far, handwriting is super messy you can barely read. Super rude to students and her voice is very annoying. Tough grader and teaches very poorly. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS
She does not explain anything thoroughly, just goes over what you can find on the solutions manual. I'm not sure if this just because everything is online, but I feel like I've learned next to nothing with her teaching. Tests are nothing like the examples she goes through in class. Even when she takes up questions, doesn't explain how she got there
Covers similar examples in class to her exam questions. Don't follow her template laid out in class. If you follow her rubric for cases in class you will not get a passing grade on the case. She tells you be brief, then on the exam in that same example has 12-18 issues to cover per marking scheme. Not clear her expectations.
The professor is a hard marker and requires you to understand your own mistakes. She will not mark cases as it is your job to find the mistakes. This is the hardest Accounting class and it is alot of work. Julie is preparing you for the CPA way of correcting cases. that is find a study group and do it together. I have learned alot and it is worth.
She is definitely a caring professor, even though it may not seem like it. Once you advance past her class and into, say, the graduate accounting program, that's when you realize she wasn't a bad professor at all (and is being very real with us). The way she teaches truly prepares us for how future accounting classes are taught. Highly recommend!
Don't understand the teaching style at all. Rude, confusing, completely unorganized, and shoots down questions from students. Provides materials to work with, follow them? You will fail. Better off just learning the material from the textbook. The current rating level is shocking high.
Absolutely terrible. Avoid if you can. She's super condescending and will spend more time telling you that you're wrong without giving constructive feedback. Constantly belittling students and has a terrible smokers voice.
Not a good teacher whatsoever. She loves to belittle her students during class time and barely teaches. This course is difficult and this professor adds to that difficulty. She is very rude and doesnt care about her students as long as she gets their money! Fire her please
Ryerson needs to fire her. She's extremely condescending and does not care if you do terribly in her class. Good luck scheduling a meeting with her, she'll book you in for 2 months later. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
