Good teacher. Very organized. Explains things well. Is passionate about her subject. Plagues was an interesting class (not to mention very easy).
she is a really cool teacher and you actually learn things in her class. She makes you feel as if she is one of your classmates. Just come to her lectures and you are guarenteed at least a B.
Excellent teacher but takes not bull from any of the students. So save your excuses because she doesn't have time to hear them. Thank God there is still a teacher like her. She is all business and gets down to learning not the excuses students love to bring to class that are lazy and don't care.
Very clear in her lectures. Answers questions with clarity. Is very upbeat, which makes the class not as boring as any other BIOL class. She can be flexible in work as well. Just show a little bit of interest in the interactions and your grade will be fine.
Nice lady and very helpful. Study the notes and you will do fine
Julie really proves that a teacher makes or breaks a class. Though microbiology is not an easy course, she explains things clearly and in detail. She also is very animated so it makes her lectures fun and entertaining (never a napper). She is strict on your duties as a student (no cheating, no tardiness, etc.) but I'd take her again if I could.
A good teacher. Will answer any questions. Great knowledge about the material. Very clear and helpful.
All of the exams are short answers and if you read the question wrong... you're screwed! Overall she is an EXCELLENT teacher and I would take her again if I had to!
So far this has been my favorite class @ crc. Extremely interesting topics, great teacher. Tests are hard, you need to study and read the book, but its interesting stuff, I managed to get a B in the class, because of attendance. You get points for attendance so go to class everyday!
If she see that you're working hard,go to class daily, and hanging in there, she will definitely give you a decent grade. Do study hard but overall she is worth it! She is the best!
grades very tough. has favorites. no extra credit to anyone no matter what. gets mad if you ask questions. just a crazy, egoistic teacher. take kumar instead.
This is a very tough professor. She covers the material well but you can study the material that she gives until your eyes popout of your head and still fail the exams because of the way she words them. So if you are up for a challenge
Julie is a great teacher, and it's true, she does have favorites. But if you're her favorite, then you'll do great! Study your notes, and on her tests, she likes answers "word for word" how she would say it.
Perks: Very fun subject. Very upbeat, active teaching style. Case Study assignments fun. You will learn A LOT in this class for the "real world". Has personal stance on current subjects. Downsides: Lab notebooks waste of time. Lab has many things going on at once. Tests are very hard/can be confusing and answers have to be word-by-word precise.
JULIE ROCKS! If you can take her, DO!! She is hilarious, and really makes the class fun. It is hard, I studied my butt off for this class, but guess what? I got an A. You really have to work for the grade you want and NOT fall behind. You cannot miss any lectures, or labs and keep up with your lab notebook as you will be doing many labs at on
Shes is a great teacher, and shes really funny! I really enjoyed her class and all the fun and interesting things I learned.
This teacher is inspirational! I will not forget the things I learned from this class! Do all of your work on time, study, and go to all the classes there is no way you can fail it. I got an A. You can't lose! Check blackboard often, there are lots of hints from discussions and links to websites. Also, study groups helped me a great deal! Have fun!
I love her! She is a very, very WONDERFUL teacher. She has a wonderful sense of humor and she difintely is passionate about Microbio. I can't imagine taking Microbio with anybody else. She is quite hard however, but study, study, study and KNOW the material..you'll pass the class!
She's a great teacher. She is a hard but I learned so much! She's funny and very passionate about microbiology. Her examines are essay questions and short answers. If you love learning concepts and applyiing them take her! She explains topics clearly and simple. Study hard and attend every lecture. Overall, you'll benefit from her style of teaching.
Julie is not an easy teacher by any means, but she is very clear when she talks (loud & understandable). She does like to mess with your mind at times; she’s just trying to get you to think. I would take her again in a heartbeat, she’s awesome. Her tests are hard; you have to know how the class material is applied to real world scenarios. Study!
Prof Oliver is a great instructor; although, I find troubling because she uses excessive Academic language as I was working on my post-grad degree. Students easily lost. If she would tone and use more examples gears average towards street talk, students will be fine. Distrub me she made a project from what she learn from her symposium, shouldnt.
Although i got a great grade in the class, Julie Oliver is not one of the best microbiology teachers. I received an A but i would really not recommend her at all. You will have to find out exactly why when you take the class. Do not take her i am telling you
amazing teacher! very understanding! and explains everything soo well! although all her test are fill in and short answers..she really wants you to do well! i could not imagine taking this class with anyone else! amazing teacher!
Excellent teacher!! A little scary at first but she is only letting you know what she really expects, micro is hard and you've got to study and understand the concepts but she is very fair on the tests. Love her and the class i learned so much!!
I am just glad this class is over. It was a lot different from what I had expected it to be, but as long as you put a lot of effort into the class you will pull through with atleast a B if not an A. She requires the student to do most of the work and just assists in teacher and clarifies topics that are needed. Exams were pretty tricky!
Nvr tk her!She doesn't teach & explains the material to her students. Not easy to approach, she kind-a-nice but rude!Ton(s) of homework, she doesn't even check.it's not an English class, yet she critics your paper the way English teacher would.Gives very poor grade with exams. She will tell you to study the pocket, yet most of it are not in the test!
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE TEACHED BEFORE...SHE SAID SHE'S CHANGED HER STYLE STARTING THIS SEMESTER. WELL THIS SEMESTER IS HORRIBLE. HER CLASS AVERAGE GRADES ARE SOOOO LOW SO I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE...TRY TO TAKE SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU CAN
Majority of the class had already drop & still dropping. She was not understandable & no heart at all for her student. She would not help u when ur down, instead she scares u more. Not very helpfull even u looked like ur begging to help you out in the class. She doesn't have time for anyone. She's full of herself & selfish. I would not recommend her.
She's NOT a good teacher. Poor on communication w/ students. Gives LOTS of WORK & GIVE LOW GRADES! She doesn't liked it if you question her...you'll be on her BAD LIST & will HUMILIATE U in the CLASS. She doesn't care for her students at all. Always posted grades 1 MONTH later,so u can't drop the class right away. SHE THINKS SHE"S ALL THAT!
Excellent teacher. Passion for her subject. Explains things clearly. Very friendly, makes it a point to learn everyone's names. Great class! Very interesting!
Julie is a great teacher, but does expect a lot on her tests. Tests should be difficult, but hers are just crazy. She will try to scare you off in the first half of the semester, but she relaxes a little towards the end. Tests are hard, study, study, study. And DO NOT take this class if you are looking for an easy A.
This was the most interesting class I've ever taken. Julie was awesome, but definately HARD. The tests were insanity. And the only way to study for them is to attend lecture and grasp the concepts. No study guides! Study hard for the first 2 tests, the last 2 are easier. I'm a total germaphobe now!
If everyone thinks she is a great teacher, so how come at the end of the semester there are only few students left out of 80-100 students? If people are dropping like a flies, I'm pretty sure that all of those students are not DUMMIES not to understand the concept of the material. There is something wrong w/ her teaching or her attitude!!! SHAME U
If you're interested in Infectious diseases, you might not want to take the class, it seems the professor does not like people who are genuinely interested. This professor was totally not worth listening to.
I got an A in her class but I had to work my a$$ off. Literally. My grades in all my other classes suffered because I spent so much time having to study for her class. Micro is a hard subject but she makes it unnecessarily more difficult and her tests aren't even reflective of class material. Don't take her if at all possible. Really.
I loved Julie's class! The material is complex and challenging, but Julie explained it well and kept the class engaged. She has high, but reasonable expectations for her students(meaning you must study on your own and not expect to have your hand held). She uses varied and helpful teaching styles and has great passion for the subject.
Hella funny and makes the class engage in infectious disease. She made the course interesting
She's not an easy teacher but this isn't supposed to be an easy class. I failed this class te first time around due to family emergencies but I am very much looking forward to having her again!
Julie was definitely a hard a** the first day. Her voice is shrill and she speaks loudly. However as a college student, a teacher like her is refreshing. She takes no bull, tells you what to do, and you're expected to do it. DO THE NOTES. STUDY FOR TESTS. BE THOROUGH. Can't stress the notes enough.
Microbio is a hard topic, but it depends on who teaches it. If you enjoy taking well structured notes, then you'll probably hate this class. Oliver doesn't lecture, she'll briefly go over a few things, and it is up to the class to ask her questions. There's also a TON of book & assignments-- do NOT take over the summer unless it's your ONLY option.
Meant to say there's a ton of bookwork, not books. They're for your own good, and are "key" to the test questions, however she doesn't do study guides so you must review them all. Again, if you must take her, do it during the semester, or prepare to get your @$$ beat during summer. Not kidding!

She's kinda' talks down to you. Her lecs aren't thorough, and she will give you alot of out of class work(which will need to be completed, or partially completed before class as directed by pg #s), but labs are ok and grading on them is fair. Study the work book pages, and try to take down her lec rants. Recc prof Nef(good prof and explains well).
This is one of the most pompous, condescending teachers I've come across. There is really a set of papers titled, "How Is College Different From High School?". How condescending is that? We KNOW we are in college. This is easily the most offended I've ever been by a prof. Do not talk down to us. You are insulting your students! You're insulting me!
Good teacher but you need to be on the ball with homework and studying. She is very serious but does have a mellow side on occasion. Not sure if I like her or not. Some times her demeanor pisses me off but overall the class is intresting and if you keep up on the work then it's allright.
I do NOT recommend her if you aren't a self learner! She does NOT lecture so it's up to YOU to learn and understand most of the material, but she will answer questions if you have any.I dropped because I couldn't learn it on my own. It's a very independent class even though you work in groups throughout the semester.Shes a great prof but not for 440
She is one of the best teachers I've ever taken. Very helpful. Just do the homework and the tests will be a breeze. Look forward to other classes with her!
Test consist of class discussion & textbook. Be prepared to study 20+ hours a week. This class is taught at a community college, but the standard of teaching is that of a 4 year university. Do not try to take other classes while taking this class. If you do be prepared to be extremely overwhelmed by the amount of work required to pass this class.
Very intimidating because she wants those who are not serious to drop the class. you have to put in EFFORT to understand the materials.stay on top of everything and you have to devote extra more hours to review review review. you will discover that she has a sense of humor but very serious, committed to work and teach the way students will learn.
She SUCKS, total waste of time and attending class. Not helpful at all, she expects you to teach yourself, which makes it hard for a subject like microbiology. She has a huge ego which shows right on her face. She isn't approchable at all. Scars students away. Do not recommend taking her at all. she show passion in what she teaches.
Don't be scared to take her!Even on the first day of class she tried to scare her students. She is a great teacher! Doesn't lecture out of the book word for word, but instead uses time very wisely talking about topics she wants to make sure we understand and will be on the exam. Come to class, take notes, use study groups and do the workbook pages!
Her expectations are high so be prepared.
She is a great teacher. DO NOT take this class if you don't have time to study. She will help you during office hours if you need and she also will clearly explain questions. the test are hard and you need to attend every class.
Professor Oliver is a great teacher. very helpful and knowledgeable. she may seem unapproachable at first, you just have to get to know her. she expects a lot, so don't fall behind. everything you need to know for exam is from lecture, so take good notes! she is a VERY busy lady, but she still takes the time to help you learn.
My second class with this Professor, she knows her stuff, takes the time with you if you seek her assistance, and genuinely wants you to learn what she's there to teach. She expects your presence and for those of you that want an easy grade...this is not the place. Do not take a seat if you don't have the time! Top notch and highly recommended.
This class material is hard not the teacher. Proffesor Oliver is always willing to help if you, if you approach her for help. She really makes an active learner out of you. Take her class if you want to learn. This class is not an easy A, so you better be ready to commit.
By far, the best professor I've had. Of course, it is a hard class - it's microbiology, but if you want to learn to apply concepts and retain what you've learned, take her. Her lecture packets are integral to successful test taking. She is not for everyone, if you are not self-motivated and are used to typical lecture format, then take someone else
In the beginning of the semester she will tell you not to take ANY other class with her class, she really means it! I took her class alone and it felt like the amount of work for 3 classes. I watched people take her class along with another class and did not finish or pass the class. Attend every lecture AND lab and pay close attention to details.
Best class i have taken yet! She helps teach great study skills and is tough but you get what you put in! Her class is fun and interesting :)
Would rate Julie a "0" if I could. She doesn't lecture and doesn't take questions. She uses a book that's full of mistakes and her study guides are full of mispelled words and broken English. Sometimes I wonder if the reason she doesn't like questions is because she doesn't know the answers. If you need an "A" don't take this class.
Interesting how all the negative comments are from students who did poorly. Julie will teach you to think for yourself, apply your knowledge, and be self-motivated. Invaluable tools for anyone who wants to be successful. She is smart and funny and of she doesn't answer Qs directly it is because she expects you to think. Great professor! Loved her!
This is by far the toughest class I've ever taken. Exams are all essay! You need to dedicate your life to this class but even then, you need to learn how to think outside the box. Flashcards and study groups are a must. Memorizing will only help you to get a C in this class. Material is hard but she makes it harder.
Enjoyable class, geared towards those who are interested in a medical career. Lecture exams are all written answer, which I usually enjoy but for this class I wasn't able to pass any lecture exam. Questions are a little ambiguous. It bothers me when I know the answers on a test but the grade suggests otherwise.
So basically how she teaches doesn't matter cause she'll manipulate the points to give you what she wants to give you. I came with proof: photobucket user MichaelAlaniz4040 library. They don't like Links so I had to modify it a little.
Microbio class. Not a easy teacher but when u walk out of her class at the end of semester you will actually remember everything you learn. I recommend to those who are willing to put efforts into this class. But also very funny. Labs was super fun.
You get out of this class what you put into it. She constantly reminds you that if you choose a career in clinical healthcare, you will be making life and death decisions. Respect, value and understand how important critical thinking is each day. This class is truly an inspirational reality check.
This class is by far the hardest class I have ever taken, yet probably the one I enjoyed the most. Lecture exams were the hardest for me, she is a pretty tough grader. So really study! Recommend group studying! She definitely expects you to put work in. I mean, if you plan on doing something medical, you better get use to working your ass off!
She's an extremely tough grader. All her test are short answers and she is very specific of what she is looking for. She gives packets of things you should know while reading but never reviews the answers. She lectures 50% of the time and the other time she assigns group work but either way you are expected to know your stuff!
I took her and ended up dropping because I wasn't getting where I wanted to be on my grade, she was not a bad professor , just because she wasn't the right fit for me. This class require devotion and all of your time, having a full time job doesn't help, record the lecture and study, study. Test are really hard like an essay.
Prof. Oliver gives a lot of homework and required reading so if you are willing and have the time it shouldn't be a problem but be aware. Exams are written answer. This class is more of a self-learning with a lot of in class group activities. Not lecture heavy with slides.
BIO440 This was by far one of the best (favorite) classes I have taken so far. It is possible to get an A, but you do have to earn it and she DOES grade fairly! How I got an A: Read and complete chapter homework, use homework to highlight material emphasized in lecture, use this info AND group work handouts to study for exams. Date the labs.
Professor Oliver is a wonderful caring lady who really knows her stuff. She is very organized and will help keep you on track and give you weekly reminders to get your work done. Work is simple and grading rubric is very clear. She also leaves great feedback on all your assignments and really wants to make sure you do well. Highly recommended!
For MicroBio she hands you a packet as lecture these questions must be completed before class. Then if students have questions from these packets she will address it in class. If you can read a text book and understand the significance of topics, dont like lectures take her. If you like a prof that cares about student success do not take!
When there is a deadline approaching Prof. Oliver sends out friendly reminders to students who hasn't turn in their assignment. Students may see it as micromanaging. I see it as she cares for her students. No text-book required for this class. Weekly discussion boards, quizzes, weekly homework, 2 e-portfolio (1 midterm and 1 final) on canvas .
Ridiculously easy. Dont bother buying the book at all. Pay attention to the grading rubric. One missed section on a project will severely hurt your grade. Group projects were dumb & easy. Typical discussion post and 2 replies a week. Uses ePortfolio to build a page for the midterm & final. Regurgitated info that has to be formatted properly.
Professor Oliver was amazing! She is very funny and very passionate about what she teaches. She keeps it real with you, which is what I loved about her. Her labs and lectures are never boring as long as you can keep up. The material is difficult and its a lot, but stay on top of it, SERIOUSLY STUDY, ask for help when needed, and you can do it!
Laughable when a professor advertises her class to prepare you for a career in healthcare but does not feel her students should be enrolled in A&P and microbio simultaneously. The micromanagement is excessive and not indicative of university level curriculum. Feels like many hoops to jump through, but the material is low yield at best.
Prof Oliver is wonderful and passionate about teaching. She aims to connect with students which I admire. I took her microbiology class despite not being a Bio major, and I received an A because I worked for it. If you are more familiar with bio it may not be as difficult! There are assignments due every Wed. and Sun. and two group projects.
A lot of students honestly underestimate professor Oliver. She will give group projects, but they are honestly quite interesting. If you do your work and post by the due date (plus peer replies) for discussions, you will get an essay 10/10. Midterms and Finals are just easy research. Tests are easy all you have to do is read. Easy A if you do work.
She is my favorite professor ever. She assigns barely any homework and is very easy. She understands that you have free time so she sometimes ends class 10 minutes early.
DO NOT try and take another difficult class simultaneously! Overall the teacher is great and sarcastic! I started off ok in the class and in the beginning she does warn students that her class is extremely difficult and students should be studying AT LEAST 10-12hr per week out of class so she doesn't assign hw. MAKE THIS CLASS A PRIORITY!
If you want to take her class you need to be prepared to study ALL the time and say goodbye to your social life and all the fun you want. This class is pretty much your whole life for the semester. Don't recommend taking other science classes, don't give extra credit, and can't be late for labs. To sum up you either "know the material or not".
Be prepared for lots of studying and homework and don't even bother enrolling in other classes cause the workload for this class is horrible. She wants you to know every topic completely after only a few days of learning it. She also assigns reading on weekends and her exam grading are worth over 1000 points. WOULD not recommend
Taking this class is like gambling but the odds aren't in your favor. The exams aren't multiple choice! The exam questions are also difficult, and you have to explain CLEARLY. You either know it, or you don't. No extra credit. The other assignments don't matter. If you fail the exams, you fail the class. I don't recommend this professor.
Knows her shit. Incredibly intelligent, but pushes you hard. It's obvious she wants to make you a competent health care professional because this class is tough. She cares. Pay attention to little details she brings up in class and questions used in online textbook. The small details amount to big picture answers she uses in exams. Good luck.
Amazing professor! This is definitely not an easy class. Be prepared to set a lot of time aside to learn and master the material. Quizzes are all online with no time limit and multiple attempts. Make sure to pay attention to what she says in class as they are likely to be included in exams. Do not procrastinate on studying!
Amazing! Prepare to study! Heavy lifting is on you. Study guides/additional worksheets. Questions are to make you think, apply to scenarios. Highly encouraged to create study guides! Review everyday. Reviews before exams, remember you're not alone. Participate, if it is wrong it's ok, that's why she is there to help you learn.
Lecture was asynchronous, labs were in person. Heavy notes, but she creates guides to make it manageable. Lecture exams are exactly like the study guides, so study those and use quizlet/notecards. Labs are mandatory w/ multiple portions, but they're simple and engaging. Choose your group of four wisely! She's an amazing professor, so take her!!
Julie's assessments are out of 50 per module and are 3-4 essay questions ONLY. She expects you to explain your answers in DETAIL and will not be lenient in her grading which is expected if you want to be in the medical field, you need to know your stuff. IF you want an A in this class you need to be prepared to do a lot of reading! UNCRAMMABLE!
Prof. Oliver knows her stuff. She will definitely push you HARD but it's in your best interest. Be prepared to study A LOT. Lecture and lab tests are all short answer, no multiple choice (except on quizzes, which you can retake over and over to get your desired score). She wants you to be successful in her class and in your future career!
I took Professor Oliver in the Summer of 2023 and it was a lot of work. Labs were in-person and several labs were put together. There is a study guide to read along with the textbook and videos to watch. Midterms are based on 3-4 questions, so it can REALLY affect your grade. It's not advisable to take BIOL 440 with any other class in the summer.
A lot of these reviews are very misleading. This professor does not lecture. Be prepared to teach yourself all the material for the week via the textbook. Unsure why profs think it's ok to not lecture when that's what we're paying them to do. Expects you to be 10mins early every day. Very snappy and short with students + disorganized canvas site.
She definitely does not lecture. She gives you random videos of other professors to watch. Her exams consists of 1 lab material and 3 to 4 lecture exams worth 50 points each so it's really hard to get good grades on it. She also marks you off on lec exams if you answer too long or too short. Do yourself a favor and take another professor.
Wonderful teacher! I'm not sure why some BIO440 reviews are complaining about how she doesn't lecture when it clearly states that the lecture portion of the class is asynchronous when enrolling... Guided notes are provided, videos are provided, textbook is free, exams are moderately difficult and short. Labs are also very fun. Totally recommend!
An amazing professor! However, be ready to read & study A LOT. My grade (87%) is due to being somewhat lazy, so more motivated people will do better. She may seem tough, but she provides as much help to students as possible (office hours, weekly tutoring sessions, video resources, etc.) Overall, she is fair, funny, & I would take her class again!!
Professor Oliver is great. If you are willing to put in the time and effort for this class, and change your habits when necessary (studying, learning, etc.), you will do well in this class. She truly cares about your success, which means she will PUSH you, but it will be manageable and she'll be right there to help along the way if you need it.
I did took the 8 week course instead of the 16 week course, so it made the workload very heavy. No extensions were made, but the content was great and I would definitely take the professor again!
I took her class during my sophomore year in high school and I loved it. She was really awesome and gave really good feedback on things I could improve for my research. I loved learning about the things she taught and assigned good articles and videos to help me learn. I also really liked her group projects and found it really fun.
Unprofessional and verbally abusive. Has no respect for students. Aggressive n angry behavior. Puts students on the spot which is embarrassing. Her tone is aggressive, condescending and loud. Material heavy course. Many students have dropped out because of her disrespectful tone and putting people on the spot, its very uncomfortable. Avoid her!!
I had so much anxiety every time I had to go to her class. She was extremely strict and unapproachable. Take another Professor if you want some peace of mind.
Don't waste tuition on her. Horrible, mean person. You'll learn the material than ask questions that's not on the material. Aggresively write on board and gets angry/loud if you don't know it. Treats/talks to the class like children. Rude, has no boundaries/respect. Don't waste your sanity, money and time on her. Will randomly put you on the spot.
Don't waste tuition on her. I felt so uncomfortable and anxious. She is mean. You'll learn the material than get asked questions that's not on the material. Will randomly point you out and put you on the spot in front of everyone. Gets angry/loud if you don't know it. Treats/talks to class like children. Has no boundaries for personal space.
Oliver comes off very rude and cracks unfunny and weird jokes. Expects us to do pages of the lab manual without telling us which page and when asked its "in the announcement" and when looked through up and down its never there. Went home with a full class to only 11 left the next day. Tests are horrible and has new material I've never seen before.
Ambiguous grader, exams will make or break you. Condescending and intimidating. Talks at you and not to you. Seriously only take her if you have no other option. Grading rubric is very unclear bc she converts 3,2,1 into something out of 50. Will pick 1-3 questions and want you to apply it w/ critical thinking on LECexams. LABexams straight forward.
Professor Oliver's BIO440 class is challenging but rewarding. The asynchronous lectures and guided notes make the material manageable. Exams focus on details, so staying on top of the readings and using study tools like quizlet and unstuck ai are crucial. Overall, a demanding yet enriching course.
Prof. Oliver's BIO342 was one of my favorite classes. Sometimes reading/self-led studying can be dense, so be sure you understand the basics of your subject before proceeding. You may get shafted when it comes to group projects. No fault of hers. If you're interested in epidemiology, would recommend 10/10. Prof. is communicative, cares for students
342 Summer 2nd time teaching, online. She gives weekly content and releases new material every Saturday. Q's are given no exms taken all multiple choice w/ some fill in the blank and short essay responses. Free book openstax, 2 Group projects are assigned, a lot of reading and research. Late work is not accepted. She can come off as rude sometimes.
Professor Oliver's BIO 342 class was honestly a very easy A, I ended with a 99 in her class. As long as you just follow directions, there's so reason you can't get an A. She's a very nice and easy grader. The work load could seem like a lot and be a bit intimidating, but it's actually really easy, just a lot of research. Highly recommend.
information heavy course that requires a decent amount of time. workload is overwhelming at first, but once in a rhythm it isn't too bad. she truly cares about her student's success and provides a lot of resources for extra help (which i highly recommend taking advantage of). content and lab was interesting. be prepared for her to push you.
