Awesome prof! Loved her class! Great sense of humor. Loves to connect with students. Will not tolerate disrespectful students and laziness. Would recommend!
knows her stuff-should teach an upper level course that's suited for her. covers an extreme amount of material(18 pages just on test review). no A's in the class-Approx. 2/3 of the class has failed first 2 tests and that was with hours spent studying. She is personable but just way too much material and goes through it too fast.
Julie would be a cool friend, but as a teacher she definitely needs to teach an upper level bio course. Her tests were ridiculous, more than 75% of the students failed her first 2 tests then more than 50% failed her 3rd. I dropped her class and I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS CLASS.
Julie warned the class the very first day that Bio for majors was a very tough course. I think that the material covered was to blame; too much information for just one semester. Julie was always willing to answer questions. She was funny and very organized. Not an easy A; believe me I worked hard for mine.
Julie tries to rush through the material too fast and while she tries to explain it well, she does it too fast for everyone to absorb the material. Over half the class failed the first 2 out of 5 tests miserably even though we really tried. She then got angry and basically told us that she expected us to fail at life. Cool person, bad teacher.
She seems like a nice person, but a bad teacher. I understand it's college and it's going to be harder, but she just kept piling on the assignments on the first day. And I could tell I would fail it miserably, she rushed through chapter one too fast for me to even realize what she was saying.
Love the class! It's Definately a challenge, but well worth the effort, especially if going into the medical profession field. It's a lot of info to take in. The labs are a blast! Always available for help. Wished I had more professors with her attitude!
Extremely hard teacher! Goes over the material too fast. Exams are extremely difficult too. Do not take her unless science is your strong suit!!
Not an easy class but it's not supposed to be. Level of difficulty prepares you for the harder classes yet to come in any medical profession. Come to class pay attention and know info on slides and you will pass.
Julie does a great job with this subject. Manages to make a class that is really only memorization into something enjoyable. replaces one test grade with attendance quizzes so go to class.
ok... i really liked her as a person, but she went WAY too fast and i couldnt keep up so i dropped and took it again the next semester. I didnt take the class seriously at first and it got me WAY behind and i could get caught back up so take good notes and study study study... :) Its not bad if you really try...
Awesome Course! Julie clearly stated that she didn't want Stupid doctors, nurses or pharmacists and that's why the course is difficult, to prep us for upper level courses! If you used her reviews for the tests, you could score well. If you are willing to study hard, you can ace her course! I passed with an A as much as others say its impossible!
I actually really enjoyed this class, but it was VERY difficult!! You have to work your butt off and study really hard if you want to pass this course. Her lectures were really great, what made her course so difficult is the way her tests were written They're worded different than lecture & the text book which makes it harder to know what to study
Julie is a great person. She's funny and fun to be around. But her class is no joke. I had to withdrawl because I couldn't make above a C on the tests. I studied like crazy. And I still didn't do well. Her tests are killers. They are super hard.
I took Anatomy 2134, if your going to take this class it needs to be 1 of the ONLY classes you take that semester due 2the Immense amount of studying involved. julie is a nice person but not the best professor, rushed through things 2 quickly, tests &reviews dont match.I actaully ended up studying about 30hrs a week having 2 teach MYSELF Everything!
if you know whats good for you & you truly want to be a great asset 2 our future healthcare DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. classavg on 1st 2out of 4 test was a 59%.you will only find yourself struggling 2 pass with a C & not caring as much about gaining actual knowledge &this class is the ONE CLASS YOU MUST GAIN KNOWLEDGE From2B Effic. in ANY MedicalField
not very good you will drop in a week
Julie is an awesome person and a no-bull teacher. She'll tell you what you need to know and gives you a schedule for the semester - when tests are, labs, etc. Make sure you print off her slides and follow in class and you're good to go. Studying is a must, and she makes class fun and interesting. Recommended if you want to know what you're doing.
Tests are very hard but the grading curve helps a lot. Do the homework and show up for lab. She does have a sense of humor but don't use your cell phone in class!!
Julie is awesome!!! She does require that you as a student put forth an effort and learn what you are studying. She wants you to know your stuff when you walk out of her class. You do have to study, if that isn't for you, then don't take her. If you are serious about knowing anatomy in the real world, then she's awesome. Great use of resource
did do well with her? you obviously didn't study. If you dont plan on giving 100% dont go here. shes awesome teacher but no bull
I really enjoyed her bio. for majors class. Yes she is tough but as long as you attend class, pay attention, go to your lab (which besides the several written lab reports you can make good grades from your lab manual).Just study and show up for lab and I think you can end up with at least a B..but maybe thats just myself.
Not a good teacher. Talks really fast. If you ask a question she doesn't know the answer to, she answer it with somethings she knows instead of saying she dosen't know. Classroom rules are more important to her than helping students gain knowlage. Unprofessional. Cusses during class. Take William Wise.
If you like 30+ hours of study each week go for it!!! She is a nice person but requires WAY too much! Make sure it is the ONLY class you take or you WILL BE SORRY!!!
JP is the coolest. She's so funny and very informative. She grades very hard, but is also very fair. Please take her class, you'll have fun and learn a lot!
She's wonderful..yes it requires lots of studying I will admit that but in the long run aren't we gonna be studying just as hard in i don't know nursing school? There are way worse instructors out people..get over it!
Julie is cool, and tries to be fair.. Don't miss a lab or test, You can't make it up.. that sucked! She is cool and tries to make learning fun! We learned by a dance she taught us (Metaphase, Prophase,etc..stages).. Super fun class! Just know that you will earn your grade..Over half of our class dropped.. Difficult, but you WILL LEARN!
Julie's mandate for this class: I don't want stupid doctors and nurses. This is not a passive memorization class, this is an involved, critical thinking class. Julie will give you all the tools you need to succeed in her class, but she won't spoonfeed you. You are expected to be responsible for your own performance. She is a very accessible, ap
She tries to be cool. But should just teach. She is OK.Labs are fun and I learned more from them than anything else.
Tests are tough, was unclear on what to study, study guides were too general.
Her tests aren't that bad. To many people try to make it complicated with the study guides..don't! If you keep it simple and learn the info on your notes you'll be ok. She'll even tell you study the notes she gives you in class not out of the book.
taught more like a graduate level class for reasons that one can only guess...
I took her for Anat/Phys and it was HORRIBLE!!! She is a nice woman, but dang, the homework was crazy and all over half the class dropped, if you can manage time good and aren't taking too many classes this may be a cool class for you, but it was a very difficult class, i made a D, but i was taking 4 classes and just couldnt dedicate myself to her
SUPER fun teacher! Makes learning enjoyable! Julie is hilarious! It is not hard to pay attention in class lectures! Has extra credit and quizes to keep your grade up!
A very hard teacher but excellent. She's knowledgeable and passionate about her material. She expects you to work hard and take the class seriously. She may come across as strict or cold, but actually she's very understanding and holds good study sessions in the math lab. She's one of the best teachers I've ever had.
This class is very hard. She is thorough in her teaching but she doesn't break things down well enough into lamens terms. She also goes to fast for things to sink in. In my experience, she grades unfairly; it seems to me that if you aren't a favorite, your grades don't matter.
She is an excellent teacher expects the same from her students. She notices when you are making an effort in her class. You do learn alot in her class and the grade you earn is based on your effort and not "favorites". I hardly ever talked in bio. for majors and still pulled out an A.
Good teacher but gives too much busy work! Some of it is overkill. She is fair.
She is a great teacher if you really want to learn things. She does not sugar coat anything and does not treat you like your in high school, and she also knows it's up to you to make the grade. I took the summer course it is difficult, but you can do it if your dedicated. Not a class for people who expect an A handed to them!
She is a really cool teacher with a really hard subject. If you can put forth the effort, she will recognize it and help you where you're weak. She makes the material interesting, even though it's bland. But if you slack off, you'll fall behind. She won't hold your hand, but she'll definitely walk you through.
Amazing! Go to class, go to lab, and do your homework. Tons of bonus is available. As long as you ask she will help you but she's not there to baby you. Tests are VERY hard but your in class quizzes help a lot. She wants to make smart nurses/drs and she'll push you to do your best. If you want to learn take her.
I'm not sure why everyone is so enthusiastic about this professor. Her tests were insane. I've been in college for 4 years and never had tests like that. If your GPA matters - and it does for nursing and pre-med students - do not take this professor. Yes, you learn a lot, but your effort is not equal to your grade. Believe me when I say DO NOT TAKE
Impossible to get an A. Although she is a nice and helpful teacher, her tests are so overwhelming it is truly impossible to get an A. You study what she says to study and the tests asks questions irrelevant to what you studied. Regret taking her class this semester!
Too much busy work and then tests are from left field. Nice lady. Not all that interesting.
BUSY BUSY work... lots and lots. Nice lady.
This class wasn't all that bad. She is an excellent professor, and she's got a wonderful personality. Her tests are pretty easy if you study (She'll tell you what to study if you just listen.) Make sure you take notes!
Teacher does not seem know her subject very well and relies on textbook and supplements...lots of busy (some of it is helpful).
Pros-Very knowledgeable, will go out of her way to help students, makes class interesting. Cons-expects you to learn every little detail, which is near impossible with the huge amt of info covered. Test questions aren't worded very well & difficult to understand. Tips-pay attention to lectures/powerpoints & do every bit of extra credit available!
EASY and u should take this class 4 fun!(being very sarcastic!)RealDeal: she is like a walking book, spits out facts that make you want to dodge them and say "Wait WHAT?slllow down!" it's a fun review to her to show how intelligent she is!she has a nice personality though, and "tries" to make it fun.tests=hard.try to keep up and memorize!!MDs=class
Class was moderately hard. You DO have to study on a daily basis. This class is NOT meant for a cram session. Julie is very helpful and challenges you to study based on YOUR personal learning style. She makes class fun and will tell you @ the beginning she doesn't want stupid nurses and doctors in the field.
This class is extremely challenging! Unless you are the modern day Bones, you will not get remotly close to an A in this class. However, when you finish this class you will know all your information ...
I read this before I took this class. She's not that bad guys. Clearly no one who has rated has taken a university level class. If you want to learn your stuff, this is the best you get at TCC. Go to NSU and take Woods, Debanzi, McDowell, or Smith... Then revisit what you thought about porterfield.
A & P is a tough class no matter what. I made a B but I had to work for it. Julie is a tough teacher but the class is fun and interesting. You will have to study. She does offer some extra credit, without I would have had a C. As far a teacher goes, Julie is great, just be prepared to work for your grade.
Very tough class If you are willing and have time to really study, it is more than worth it. She goes the extra mile so you understand the material. She prepares you for Micro, and physi, which makes those classes easy. She doesn't like to give extra credit but does, jump on the opportunity. I made a 98 so A is possible.
Unrealistic expectations. Youve been warned.
So much for my good GPA i had. Wish i had NEVER taken this instructor. Tests are ridiculous and I felt i had no guidance whatsoever. This is a blended class so only had an in class lab but i felt you were left to learn everything on your own. TONS of reading, tons of information overload. Now i get to retake next semester. :(
She was a really cool person, but not a good teacher! Over half the class dropped.. We had to teach ourselves everything. Tests were crazy!! If you care about your grades I wouldn't take this teacher. If you have lots of time, I suppose you can pull it off.....
THIS IS A HARD CLASS! But if you want to do well in the medical field TAKE HER! Her tests are very hard, labs are fun though. She teaches you with fun mnemonics. YOU HAVE TO STUDY EVERY DAY! Quiz before lectures *so read ch before class*. Don't take this class with other tough classes. I suggest this actually be your only class if you want an A.
STUDY!! Do NOT expect to get an A. Do NOT take more than three classes while in her class. You spend countless hours studying for this class. She's a good teacher, she goes very fast! ONLY take her class if you have a lot of time on your hands that you can devote to studying. It is a challenging class!
Anatomy will never be an easy course. This professor has very high expectations, but also teaches with a very specific intent: to prepare students for a successful career in medicine. Read in advance. Do the extra credit. You can do well and learn this... and what follows will be easier as a result. (This was 4 of 16 hours for me!)
Julie is great! She's helpful in & out of class, she's funny, & she really knows her stuff. The class is challenging for sure, but you'll definitely know anatomy! She gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit & she gives you a lot of additional learning resources through BB. I would definitely take her class if you're premed.
I took her blended class and she is a nice lady but nice doesn't help you learn or make a good prof. Her tests were terrible, no clue what was going to be on them till you sat down to take it and she never offered a review. Over half the class dropped and she seemed proud about that. Not a class I would recommend for even the best students!!
Horrible class. I took a blended class. Would not recommend her as an instructor. She is a nice person but needs to go over more on what is going to be expected for you to know on the exam just not 5 chapters at a time.
I have taken Anatomy before, but it did not transfer to TCC. Ms. Porterfield is very helpful and nice, but if you want to do well, I would NOT take the blended class (I did). She doesn't cover as much info in the blended course as in the regular class. I worked hard for my C. Tests are difficult: you MUST study in advance. Will retake at RSU.
Wouldn't advise taking Mrs. Porterfield. She has a lot of knowledge however has made this course way too difficult. I have been in the medical field for several years and still struggled keeping up. She includes a lot of Physiology as well that will be over your head unless you have taken Physiology prior to..
I took this class as an 8 week summer course. Julie is not the instructor for you if you are wanting an easy class that hand delivers an A without any input. However, if you are serious about learning and intend on advancing in the medical field Julie is the perfect match. If you pass her class you will KNOW your stuff.
Her class is not easy but she completely knows her subjects and she is also very fair. Ive noticed the people that gripe about her class are those who want an easy grade. Show up for lecture, do your homework, and READ YOUR BOOK. If you can not pass Julies class you shouldnt be in health care. It's your responsibility to pass, not the Julies.
You have been warned. Do not take this class. She makes anatomy, which I was very interested in, miserable. I do not expect an easy A. She brags about her drop rate which is the most people I've ever seen drop a class. Wording on test is not easy to understand, she definitely tries to make it difficult for you even if you have studied.
Not an easy A,but if you want to LEARN and are willing/able to put in the time, Mrs.Porterfield gives you everything you need to be successful. She just doesn't do it FOR you! You will be a better student when you leave her class. She teaches more than just the subject matter, although she teaches that VERY VERY in depth! Danced when I saw my 90%.
This class was an asset to me in preparation for PCAT exam. The knowledge that you gain by taking this class with Mrs.Porterfield is priceless. She does an amazing job of explaining the complex mechanisms of the human body. If you are looking for success in your field of study I encourage you in join Mrs. Porterfield’s class.
There are a lot of little easy quizes, and for a majority of the semester a test, either lecture, lab, or terms quiz, every week. She is a very good teacher. She explains the material well and her lectures are not boring. It is a lot of work, but you learn a lot. Test are over what she lectures, so if you take notes and study you should do well.
Anatomy is not an easy subject. Therefor the class is not an easy one. Do not take her if you want an easy A. Howevever, an A is attainable with hard work and consistency. She is a great teacher and knows her stuff.
Excellent Professor! If you want to know your stuff take her!
Mrs Porterfield expects a lot out of her students since most of them are going into the medical field. You must read and do the homework pay close attention in class, take notes, ask questions and you should be good. She will make sure that you know your material since you will build on it in any kind of medical school. I would take her class again.
Worst professor ever. She doesn't care if her students actually understand anything. Trying to "follow" her during lecture is a joke, she's unorganized, doesn't provide notes, and NO TEST REVIEWS. She's VERY vague as to what's actually on the tests, Do bad on 1 test and there's no hope!
Professor Porterfield was an excellent teacher. I took it 10 yrs ago and made a C; I made a high A with her. Ask and you shall receive help. My advice ask questions during lecture if you're lost, but most importantly read book and attend class. Help is there if you ask and she's great to prep anyone for a medical career. It's hard work but doable.
Teaches the way she learns not willing to bend to help other learning styles. Expects you to spend 34 plus hours outside of class studying to pass. Tons of work and memorization that is not needed for the majority of most students. Can be very arrogant and condescending toward the students. Would not recommend this class to anyone. Worse teacher.
All over the place with what to study for, so far I'm studying 5 different chapters to keep up with lab, exams, lectures, quizzes, onl. assignments. Maybe a good class for people that have a lot of extra time on their hands but working even part time and taking her class is absurd. I don't think she understands some people don't have time like that
A good person but the way she teaches isn't very flexible with peoples schedules, I don't mind not having exam reviews or study guides, etc. this isnt high school BUT it is a college where adult students attend classes and have fullpart time jobs which she doesn't consider seeing how she has 30 different asgn. for 100 different chap. due in 1 week
The first day of class she informed us that over half the class drops her class which proved to be true. I found that it wasn't her priority for everyone to understand the information. Her teaching is very unorganized. Do NOT take the blended class. I do not expect an easy A but this class proved impossible to follow and learn. Tests very hard.
This professor is a joke. How is anyone supposed to make a good grade in a class that is all over the place on what to study for. Porterfield is a terrible professor. Take at your own risk!
Porterfield is awesome. I would definitely take her class again. She makes classes and lab really fun but you have to actually learn the info to do well. There's tons of extra credit that I suggest you take advantage of, it'll really help. She's hilarious but tough, and will help you memorize with some funny "stories".
Her extra cred mean anything considering the fact that it will barely help. For about an hours worth of work every other day you can do an online assignment and make a .001 percentage off of it. It's a waste of time and does not bring your grade up almost at all.
Beinf an A student this class was hard. Not because of the material but because of how it was taught and the grading involved. Porterfield likes to teach and grades the way she finds is easiest which is the worst for the students. We had studied multiple chapters during random weeks and the extra credit is useless. She doesn't even have an office.
Do not take this teacher, her grading and weighted exams are the worst. No office, a 2 hour window of time each day to email her because she doesn't check her email after 2 pm. Waste of time and money to take her class.
Take this professor if you want a bad grade on your transcript. The comments below are completely true and I bet half of them are from the class I'm in. Porterfield doesn't have what it takes to get students to remember the material. To put it lightly she's not a good professor. This is very much a self-taught class and a waste of time.
Very difficult tests. Sometimes didn't even answer emails and when she did she didn't really answer the questions. Meeting with her didn't help either. Doing the extra credit isn't even worth it! Lots of homework assignments, in class quizzes, and lab quizzes. Very strict on her in classlab rules!! She uses a lot of power pointsprezis.
If I could give this teacher 0 stars it would be done. I've never had a teacher who was so unorganized. We had 3-4 different assignments and labs going on at once majority of the time, extra credit was weighted next to nothing in the gradebook. If you don't have 30+ hours a week to study for the multi ch. she assigns then you will fail. Terrible.
Terrible professor don't take. Comments below explain.
Choose a different professor if you want to pass. Porterfield was sadly the only prof. available by the time I went to enroll so I got screwed over with all the problems that everyone else is saying on here :( completely unorganized, multiple chapters to study for every other day of the week, NO OFFICE WHATSOEVER. What type of professor is this?
Mrs. Porterfield is a really good teacher, but you have to want to pass. Anatomy is a really hard subject not matter who you take, but Mrs. Porterfield wants to be sure you know what you're doing! There are regular quizzes over previous lecture information and opportunities for bonus points. She is very friendly and will answer questions.
Mrs. Porterfield is a great teacher. You will be expected to work hard and you shouldn't expect less, because Anatomy is a hard subject no matter how you slice it. She gives you plenty of opportunities for bonus and will answer questions. She is approachable and just wants her students to succeed and know the information. A visual learner's class.
Mrs. Porterfield's way of teaching and organization skills were some of the worst I've seen, I didn't drop nor did I fail so this isn't a review from someone who didn't even finish her class, but it is an honest review. To memorize and go over 5-6 different chapters a week was impossible. The extra credit was pointless. The weighted tests.. Etc.
She is amazing. It is a lot of material but you will be completely prepared for physiology when she is done with you. STUDY STUDY STUDY. Use her quizlet and shutterfly images they are extremely helpful. Its a lot of studying but you can get an A!
take at your own risk.....
Seem's like she was there to embarrass her students other than really teach them. Tests over 6 chapters at a time and expects you to KNOW the information with no study guide. If you don't know medical terminology going into this class it will be very hard. A lot of teaching yourself! Locks you out of room 3 minutes late. Trust the rating system!!
One of the hardest teachers I have ever taken, once you pass her class you are happy you passed! Gives a lot of info at once and crams it into the exams. Better have plenty of time to study or you will not do well. If you want help you must go to her. Extra credit helps with understanding material, not really in points. Study in groups if you can!!
she gives you more ways to embar you than to actually do work. Do not take
Professor Porterfield was an excellent teacher in my opinion, she grades tough and her tests are tough but if you make it out of the class you know your stuff, and you are prepared for physiology. lab is easy as long as you study for the three practicums, i would definitely take her again if given the chance.
Extremely difficult to follow unless you have absolutely no life outside of her class. I found it difficult to get anything done because she crammed so much into every class session. She brags about how many people drop or fail her class. Good professor? Definitely not. She won't make time for you outside of class either, I'm so disappointed I took
Oh. My. Gosh. She is a hoot!! I thought anatomy would be booooring, but oh was I wrong! She's also really helpful so I definitely asked her a lot of questions. I would totally take her again! But I don't because I passed. Ha!
1 of the best teachers I've had in awhile. When you leave you'll know your stuff. Most of the class felt it was difficult, but 90% of the class are going into the medical field. The medical field isn't meant to be easy. It is meant to make you think on your feet in a fast pace environment. Single mom, 3 boys, full time job passed class with ease.
Writes her own reviews.
She is one of those professors that believe that you have no other classes besides hers and gives tons of work and basically thinks you just sit around reading the book full time out of class. Extra credit is worthless. Reviews for tests might as well be nonexistent. Can have multiple big tests at same time over different subjects. Don't take her!!
She is very unorganized, and crams too much information into each class time. Tests are really close together. Lecture tests cover about 6 chapters and lab practicums have like 4 -5 different labs on them. Waaaay to much information for somebody to memorize. No study guide, so you just have try to figure stuff out on your own. Very time consuming
What a waste of time to take ): take at your own risk. There are better options trust me!!!!!!!!
Professor Porterfield is a great lady but her class is very difficult! She expects you to cram over 6 chapters on test, there are no study guides and less then enough clarity on what she is wanting you to know. Grade average on all test were below a 65% and labs ran the same. I will be lucky if i get a C and i'm an A and B student.
This is the most unrealistic professor I have ever taken. I have spent so much time trying to study for her tests that it has affected my overall performance in my other classes. I thought things would get better throughout the semester, but I am really regretting not dropping this class. You have been warned: DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
She is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever taken. If you are studying anything in the medical field, taking her class will give you exactly what you need to be prepared. She is very clear about what you need to do to pass her class; listen to her. Show up, study hard, do extra credit, take notes, ask questions, and you'll do fine.
I am an A student and had to study for HOURS upon HOURS each week to keep up in this class. She does not really go over what you need to know in class so you are left studying everything on your own, yet expects you to know very DETAILED. Tests were hard but manageable if you study HARD. I came out with a 89.2 and she would not help out. BE AWARE!
VERY TOUGH TESTS!! DO NOT TAKE!! I am a good student and ha to study ALL the time for the tests. She expects you to KNOW at least 6 chapters worth of information on a single test. Also very confusing on where she is getting the information for the tests, because she uses so many different sources i.e. quizlet, wiley blackboard and the textbook.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Take a professor that doesn't assign you 5 chapters to study over a week, lab practicums, exams, pop quizzes. If you have no job, and nothing else going on for you than this may be the right choice.
Writes her own reviews trust me.
I loved her Anatomy class. She really was clear about what she expected, provided a lot of study aids and was available if students had any questions. One of the best professors I have ever had. She will make you learn but, it is all worth it in the end
Her summer class was very difficult, but not impossible. She provides lots of study tools and makes it possible to get a good grade for everyone. Anatomy is a tough subject regardless of who you take from, so expect a lot of work and studying. Try to avoid taking over the summer because it's so fast, but I'm sure she's great during fall/spring.
Probably the single hardest class I have ever taken. But, I have never learned so much in such a short time. Most taking will apply to some program. This class prepares you for the next level. She won't sugarcoat things, but she wants ppl to succeed and tries very hard to create effective presentations and tricks to get info into student'a brains.
I'm a nutrition major at OSU . After her class I wont take a TCC class again. When I asked her a question she would act like I am dumb and not answer me. Ive taken some hard classes, and I am always doing homework and reading, but you cant succeed if you have a professor that will help you understand when you're confused.
I took Julie's class before getting into nursing school. Yes, she challenges you hard but because of that I went into nursing school with a more confident knowledge of specific areas discussed during class. Yes, she is hard. Trust me, you'd want her back after nursing school. You get kicked into the deep end your 1st semester and sink or swim.
Mrs. porterfield takes pride in writing her own reviews apparently.
You have so much homework, tests, quizzes and research projects you don't have time for other classes, and I wasn't even working during the time I was taking her! Exams cover info you haven't learned yet and use terms she hasn't taught. Unless you are a graduate student serious about biology don't even consider taking her class.
It amazes me how much she expects you to do and learn in the amount of time given. I agree with the comments below, if you dont have a job or any other class going on you may do OKAY in this class. If you have absolutely any other classes or a job good luck finding time to study for her ridiculous amounts of work. She also writes her own reviews!!
I didn't actually have this professor, however all of my classes lab exams were written by her and not my actual teacher based of a lab book written by this teacher. Paramedic here have worked in healthcare for 8 years, I can tell you right now, based of her lab book, she is not qualified to teach you human anatomy. Find a better instructor.
She sucks!
The level of depth she expects is that of 1st year medical students in a cadaver lab, not students at the sophomore level. The amount of information she expects you to learn is honestly, not realistic. There is no guidance, its just know everything. She makes this way harder than it needs to be, I've had A&P before, and this is unnecessarily hard.
Her job is to ensure that students have an understanding of certain core concepts. I took this anatomy class, however the types of concepts she expects you to learn is far beyond anatomy, even going into some obscure pathophysiology, at the expense of ensuring you have learned the core concepts. She fails to prepare you for a career in healthcare.
Avoid if at all possible. The worst teacher I've ever had. There's a difference between pushing your students and taking pride in failing them. She's the latter. Avoid avoid avoid! Positive reviews on here where written by her.
Summer session is INTENSE. Do take her during a regular semester. Really knows her stuff and thoroughly prepares you for upper level courses. High expectations for the knowledge base but my next course, Physiology, is now a breeze and several of us miss her and wish she were teaching our current classes. Hardest class I've ever had, was worth it.
Lectures help but only a little. You wont pass if you cant dedicate 100% of your time, can't have a job or other classes. Shes nice, but her class is ridiculous.
As an Honors program student, I expect difficult classes, I want to be challenged. With that said, however, I paid money to be taught by a professional, not someone who acts like they are doing me a favor by simply being in the class. Sounded rather proud that students were dropping her class.
Taken anatomy classes before at the university level she is by far the easiest anatomy teacher. She will help with studying for exams and gives ample amount of E.C. opportunities. This is anatomy which means you must memorize and can't just show up and ace the class. Be smart and treat this for the type of class it is.
She tries to teach an unrealistic amount of homework. You must learn all of the info before you show up to class because class time was mainly to ask questions you were confused on. She liked interaction with her students but she expects you to know it before you ask her. She tries to have you prepared to pass, you must study 100% of it to pass.
Despite being cautioned on this website, I enrolled in her class. I am typically an A student and struggled to make a B. There is a lot of information covered in this course and no kind of study guide given. She stated early in class that everything she covers is important. She has a very quick temper and often went off on our class.
Professor Porterfield if without a doubt the best professor Ive ever had and my favorite at TCC for sure. I took her last fall and learned SO MUCH. She was always willing to help you, if you went that extra mile to ask for help. She helped me prepare for exams in the best way for my learning style. I will continue to thank her for the challenge!
I had Professor Porterfield for Anatomy. It was a really stressful course, however I passed and learned a lot. I liked her as a professor. She's really funny sometimes and exemplifies a great character.
At the beginning of our class this summer I had done what everyone else did, read these reviews. Expectations were low and the first few classes were heavy. Tons of memorization and long lectures with difficult course material. She made everything available and gave us the resources to succeed. I wish I had taken advantage of them more.
Julie is without a doubt one of the smartest, most qualified teachers at TCC. She doesnt stand idly by and let her students sink. She goes above and beyond to make sure you understand the material, and is willing to meet outside of class to help. She puts you well ahead of the game for your future classes. This is the prof that will challenge you.
DO NOT GET STUCK TAKING THIS PROFESSOR. i made the mistake of reading these reviews and thinking eh its probably not that bad well im here to say IT IS. Everything fill in the blank, expects you to spend A LOT of time outside of class and lab time studying to even get a C. If you have a job and/or are taking other classes you will not do well.
I read reviews and thought it cant be that bad but it is. She expects you to spend a huge amount of time outside of class on studying alone and thats to just get a C in the class. If you have a job or other classes you probably wont even make a C, but there has never been an A so if you have straight As stay away. Learned this the hard way.
I took her section of human anatomy and she was the best professor Ive had. Would definitely take her class again. Anatomy is a tough subject, but she teaches in a way that is easily understood. Tests were reasonable.
Julie is a caring person and a great professor. She knows her stuff and challenges you. She is willing to help you outside class. I withdrew from her class, because I wasn't in a good place, and her class was way too hard for me. If you like a challenge and you are willing to study extra hard take her. If you learn at a slow pace, do not take her.
it is no lie that this class is hard, but as long as you keep up with your assignments and try (actually try) you will pass, and possibly get an A. mrs. porterfield is tough, but has SO many opportunities to meet with her outside of class among other resources to learn from. she is a great teacher, just dont miss class and study hard.
Anatomy is a VERY content heavy course. There are tons of terms, structures, and overall memorization, but Professor Porterfield is a fantastic instructor and honestly one the best I've had through all my time in college. She is strict with her grades but allows for a bit of a grade bump at the end of the semester if you study hard for the final.
DO NOT TAKE! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Sucky teacher who is cocky and thinks she is special. You will have 8 exams: 3 lab practicals that are impossible to pass, 5 lecture exams one being the final, and 2 quizzes every week. She is terrible and has flipped out on our class a few times. There may be a few good reviews but don't listen to them
Porterfield has probably figured out a way to hack the system for that 3/5 rating. This teacher is horrendous. She feels the need to make her class extremely hard like it's medical school in order to make her ego feel special. Her course was exhausting and unfair for anyone who has a life outside of her unreasonable and idiotic class.
overall you will learn a lot about Anatomy, however she enjoys putting her student through a lot during the semester. Its not worth the crazy amounts of stress, and is very hard to stay focused on any other class.
Something is wrong. How can students have such different views. She obviously has hacked the system. Now that she is dean my professors refuse to say her name.
