She's a great teacher, she's humorus and doesn't condescend. She'll also work with you to help you do your essays well, but you better be willing to accept her help! She grades honestly esp w/ help from in class small groups!
She is very clear w/ her essays. All that is expected is on the prompts. Offers revisions for a better grade.
If she doesnt like you, then drop her class. I had to cuz she didnt like me, then graded me unfairly. But that doesnt mean shes not a good teacher, shes good, but i just got on her bad side.
she encourages students in her class to take risk in writing essays. she's done a lot of work to help her students improve their writing skills;of course, students should be willing to do so themselves. her class was the best experience i've had.

Best English teacher! Will learn a lot from her. Very clear in what she wants. Graded fairly. Compared to many English teachers, she's more difficult. Need great effort to get an A, esp if English is not your strongest subject. *Highly recommended*
you learn a lot, and she really helps you with your writing. participate and talk in class, or else she'll get crabby.
She's a great helpful teacher.
She is a great teacher! Very helpful and concerned about her students. Her class isn't a piece of cake but you will learn a lot and absolutely enjoy it
She is a very nice person. She helps you in whatever she can. I liked her and I think others will too.
She is good. recommended teacher
She is good and dedicated at her work. She takes lot of pain to improve her students writing skills. She wants her students to finish homework on time. If you come to the class on time and do your homework ....you can get very good grades.
I wasn't at all impressed with this teacher. I'm an editor of an online magazine and she criticized my style of writing without any supporting explanations. I didn't find her interests very entertaining, and I thought she could use more experience herself. This class is not for experienced writers.
Wonderful&helpul teacher. I wish i could take her class one more time !!!!
Ms. Sartwell treats your education seriously and is willing to help you if you are dedicated to learning. But obviously no one is perfect. If you are not picky person, this teacher should do.
The essays all have interesting topics that anyone can relate to, so it's not a bore to write. You work a lot in groups and there's not a lot of homework. It's a fun class and it not that hard to get an A. She's willing to help you even after the class and is very flexible with deadlines. yay.
doing ur readings is a must, in order to get an A. But overall she's a great teacher, really dedicated in teaching.
She seemed really nice throughout the quarter and i got good grades too! But at the end I ended up with a B without any explanaation! I think she herself is bit confused about her expectations, and so she can't judge people well! I would recommend to go and verify about ur ideas before turning essay
She is a really nice person as well as a teacher! She is prett clear about all her assignments and if u follow her instructions, u will definitely end up with an A! Highly recommended!
Despite my low clarity rating, I really enjoyed Ms. Sartwell's class. She genuinely cares about her students, even outside of class, and is very caring. She is a tough grader with essays, but it does help you in the long run to become a better writer. Highly recommended!
she spent time to get to know each student, very outgoing teacher, like a student herself, knows what she is teaching and makes the class interesting. I hardly ever dozed off in her class I recommend her to teach you.
I had Giardino Alex for EWRT 1A and she gave me an A, but when i had Sartwell for 1B i got a C. They are both great teachers, but the only difference is Sartwell expects way too much and she grades really really hard. Make sure you do your readings and i hope you're a really really good writer.
This teacher sucks. She is the first english teacher i came across who literally does nothing productive in the class. Forms groups every day and there is a discussion, assigns essay topics and does not provide necesxary guidelines. Although I got an A, I still think she is not worth a good teacher. Kindof lazy too.
Mixed bag for this teacher. She is willing to help you, but is not entirely sure of what she wants of you. I do think she is a hard grader, and grades based on what she thinks you are capable of doing, not what is asked of you. You cannot be lazy in this class. Requirements for assignments change as well.
She is very hard and treats you like a little kid. She is mostly not in a good mood because she gets mad easily. I had her for two quarters I suggest not to take her. She does not make your essay's clear enough so you get confused.
This teach absolutely sucks. She is a super hard grader and expects too much out of your writing. Shes also a really UNFAIR grader. I wrote a paper with a bunch of support and another with a little support and got the same grade on both papers!! I personally think she grades you as an individual instead of how well you do on your essays. DONT TAKE!
the class and discussions were interesting. It's true that she expects highly of her students. friendly and helpful enough. never got any email reply though. somewhat OK teacher
I took her last Winter for my 100B. She is clear at explaining thing & caring about her students. You have to do reading and HWs to keep up with this class. As far as I remember, there were 3 inclass and 2 take home essays. Lot of class disc. I just think she demands too much from our writing, and grading was fair though.
I'm sorry but I shouldn't have to be present at every class in order to write an essay. My grade went down because of my lack of attendence, very ridiculious at a college level class. I would have had a B. It was boring and unenjoyable because of the dark and depressing reading matieral.
Shes nice, and funny but when i tried asking for help on an assignment she just told me to look on the essay sheet. so not very helpful.
I liked her! she is a good teacher. she gives help when needed and most of the instructions are clear. i didnt think that she was a harsh greader. i am not a great writer but i did decent on my essays A- to B+ which surprised me. so i wouldnt say she's a tough greader. what i didnt like about the class is the final book we had to read. too overdon
worst reading material and unclear essay topics! a bore.
She is a great teacher, help us a lot. If you do all the homework, you will be fine in the class. Some people think that she is mean and hard at first, but she is friendly as the time being. She will help you when you are facing any problems. You can learn a lot from her. I really enjoy her class.
Mrs Sartwell is a really nice person. She makes every class interesting, and grades pretty much fair. She is very friendly to her students and is always ready to help if you have some problems. Highly recommended.
OMG Mrs. Sartwell is a horrible teacher. If someone did a horrible job on their essays then she wouldn't let anyone redo it unless we went to her office hours to have a retarded meeting with her. That was a BIG waste of time. When I took this stupid LART 100 class most of the students in my class didn't like her at all. She is impatient by the way.
The best english teacher I've ever had! She is really nice and very helpful. She cares about her students and their success. Her class work makes all essays very simple. Readings are interesting. Her class improved my reading and writting. Recommendable 100%.
highly recommended!
Don't take her class!! Worst teacher I've ever met!! Such a waste of time!! She wont answer your question, even though you meet her in her office. I waited more than an hour for nothing.
Very fair teacher, and a very interesting class. Had some fun activities which really helped learn alot about the topics and get good insight into them. Got a very good grade for the level of difficulty the class was at. Definetly would recommend
Great teacher. I like the way she teaches because the topics are very relatable. Keep up on your readings and you should be fine. Don't be a slouch! Also, attend office hours to get extra help on essays. I'll miss this class very much.
GREAT
Her classes have always been demanding and this class would prove my case. Insane amount of readings between lessons. Quite a lot of work as well. A very fun class though since she managed to put us in a very comfortable environment. But then exams are way too demanding and she expects way too much off you. Office hours are helpful.
If you are not a native speaker, DO NOT TAKE HER! SHE WILL DESTROY YOUR FUTURE!! She just does not like second language students, so no matter how hard you work the best grade for second language student is a B. Most second language students I know in her class got C or D+. What's more, she gets mad easily.
Great teacher. She is very nice. There are only 4 essays all of which are on fairly easy topics. There are also a couple of pop quizzes .Just keep up with your reading, take notes, go to class, and you will do fine. I definitely recommend her.
Good instructor overall. Class is basically individual work for the first half (free-write essays or discussion), followed by a group discussion (analysis of the reading or essay topic) for the latter half. Four essays on broad topics, and a diverse range of reading material mean you will probably find something you like. Overall enjoyable.
She's hilarious and up beat, you will never fall asleep in this class. The homework level is moderate, half in class and half outside. She walks you through everything. Do the homework, attend/pay attention in class, and you'll definately get an A. This is my favorite class.
She is very nice. You will have 4 essays, each on the 4 different books you will read. She is very helpful and wants you to succeed. Class is very interactive so it is not so boring.
She is not nice and is rude at many times. I feel she is unfair when it comes to helping students. Why call it office hours when you're rushing the student? I do agree with the commentor saying she gets mad really easy. Do not take this class I regret it. She demands perfection despite not able to have the patience to help the students.
Julie Sartwell is a teacher that demands perfection in the case very picky on each detail. I've never had a teacher who wasn't fair towards all students, for example, some students she was extremely helpful while others she looked annoyed. I took various EWRT classes and by far this is the worse one I can say. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS
She is really helpful. Attend to class and you will get an A.. Definitely recommend her!!!!
This class wouldn't be so awful if Julie didn't speak at the top of her lungs constantly blowing out eardrums and causing migraines. In fact if you don't take her at all it is much better in my experience.
She is really nice and helpful, but she grade a little hard on essays. All her assignments can be revise and turn in for a higher. I recommended to take her. I'm going to take her again for Lart 211
For Intro to Fiction: Fairly easy class as long as you do all the work and remember what the class discusses. Midterm and final are the only big tests + one takehome essay and a group presentation that is graded fairly easily. If you behave and do the work she'll like you. Get the reader early!!! The bookstore understocks.
she is a good teacher, but one thing that will bug you is that she is very inpatient if she asks youclass questions she wants to know within 2 seconds instead of thinking first!!!!!. Never allows class to get out of class if done early. She will assign 4 essays, she gives good feedback but if you do all you homework and essays its a easy A.
Julie Sartwell is a sweet, engaging professor. As long as you do the homework, come to class, and participate, you will likely get an A. Her class is interesting, there are no surprises, and she is a great teacher over all.
She is super rude!!!!! And so picky on paper, lot of people fail
Julie is SUPER sweet. Yes, she can be a little picky on grading but the reason people did not receive A's on papers is because they did not follow the prompt/do everything the rubric asked for. Come to class every day and do the reading assignments. The class wasn't too hard and you can ask her to read over your essays/give advice.
To be honest, I'm quite surprised to see any negative comments. Julie has been a fantastic professor. She's an extremely easy grader and allows you to rewrite papers to bring your grade up. She clearly expresses the expectations for each paper and helps you build up to the final product. the readings are thought provoking and inspiring.
Julie is such a great professor, I took her for LART 211 and she was very nice and helpful on what we should work on in order to improve on our essays. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to take LART 211.
I will never take a class with her or Kristin ! Worest F !! teacher!!! Julie is a tough grader and she litterly gave everyone a headache , Not helpful at all she expects your writting rough draft to be ready as a final and gives really rude feedback she wrote all over my essay I wont pass the class in big letters!
I will never take her class again, she will not help you with your problems, she is a lazy teacher, and she gives tough grades, not easy to pass. She isn't a good teacher for LART 211, so DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!!
okay teacher, gets really upset if her students dont participate which gave me a weird feeling about being in her class. when I needed help over email she got upset and told me that the class was a "face to face" class and that she doesnt like taking time out of her day to respond back, even though the email is specifically to help students.
Julie is amazing! Shell give you the grade that you deserve. Put effort on essays and I promise you, itll pay off. She very open to new ideas, and her laugh is hysterical lol. Take her class if youre serious with grades. Shes very respected, for sure. Just behave and be thoughtful during lectures.
Julie seriously dislikes it when people don't participate in class so if she asks any question to the class just say any old answer that comes to mind it doesn't matter if you're correct. There's a significant amount of writing but I didn't find that you had to be too great of a writer. Phones are also a giant no-no. Lectures were kinda boring.
I loved this class! I took her for LART211 & EWRT1. Read the books because you'll have to write an essay on them, but she picks good books. She takes the time to read your papers and give solid feed back. The course reader is super helpful and cheap. She is super understanding that life happens and will work with your schedule.
Tough grader, lots of things to cover in her lectures, and reading too.
She will leave great feedback on all your essays and anything you turn in. She does take attendance so must show up to pass. Overall she's very easy to pass.
I'm so surprised to hear that others have had a bad experience with Julie; she was so sweet! She has a passion for literature, so as long as you show an eagerness to learn, you'll get along in her class just fine. Not an "easy A" but what writing class is? 3 simple essays, w/ a focus on sentence structure. Class structure is easy to follow!
Shes a great professor. Loves participation and having camera on. If you show up and do all the work its not hard to pass.
I wanted to like her however she's a very tough grader and isn't always clear with what she wants from you. She also gets frustrated with you when you ask for help
Julie was my first professor in college and I couldn't have asked for a better one. She's incredibly caring and understanding, and as long as you follow along and do the work an A is easily achievable. She's very approachable, I would absolutely recommend taking her class.
I don't get all the bad reviews for her. I couldn't have asked for a better EWRT teacher than Professor Julie. Her feedback is well-constructed, and will offer specific suggestions on how to improve a passage in your paper. She has realized my potential as a writer, and she will certainly help you realize yours if you put in the work.
She gives a lot of feedback and is really friendly! Although attendance is not mandatory, everything taught in class is really helpful in improving writing skills, some of which will be looked at when grading essays.
I personally enjoyed this class a lot! Sadly, I was 2% away from an A due to late submissions. She is caring and understanding, and accepts late work. Had 3 essays, and discussion posts every now and then that'll help with the essays. She gives good feedback and focuses on applying different sentence structures. I recommend taking her class.
I really enjoyed having Julie! She has a lot of group discussion posts and makes it easy to participate in class. You just need to read the books and short stories she assigns but are really good and enjoyable books. Although English isn't usually my best subject, she gives really good feedback and is available outside of class so it helps a lot!
Sartwell's class was pretty easy for the most part! There's only one essay and our final was a group presentation on flash fiction. She gives great feedback on all of the written assignments (discussion posts and annotations), and the class itself consists of a short lecture + in class group discussion. Would def recommend for non-english majors!
Ms. Sartwell is super sweet and nice, I'd say the workload is average just a couple reading a week that can be finished quickly. She's a very kind teacher and teaches at a great pace as well as being super supportive outside of class and always being ready to help. I can't say a single bad thing about her and really loved having her as a professor.
Really good teacher, enjoyed her call and her engagement with her students. Really caring and helpful whenever you had any questions.
Overall I really enjoyed her class. She is very nice and genuinely cares about her students and their lives. There is a lot of reading and writing, which can be a bit overwhelming if you procrastinate like me, but she allows late work and is very understanding. She gives a lot of good feedback and handouts that help improve your writing skills.
Professor Sartwell is a rather tough grader, and can be very direct during lectures. I struggled a lot in this class, but advanced towards the end. Despite the tough grading, I learned a lot. Plenty of content was provided in Canvas that is useful for other classes. She definitely taught me a lot, and as long as you do the work, you will pass.
Decent English class, fair grading, good amount of reading and writing but never overwhelming. She gives detailed feedback and is available outside of class
Before taking her class, I knew nothing about writing essays, but now I can confidently say I know how to write one. She explains basic writing skills well and provides feedback that enhances your writing. Her assignment requirements are clear, so if you read Canvas carefully, you can get a good grade.
She was genuinely understanding. If you're not taking too many credits I recommend but if not this class has homeworks everyday and too much time and effort is required. She's amazing but it can get too much sometimes. And she is difficult to keep up with. Books were cheap and she also cares about each student. Gives extra credit if u ask
Julie was quite literally the best intro to college for me. I feel as though I came in being a strong writer, but I truly felt I left even stronger. She does have you read a good amount of articles in the beginning, but they help for content in your essays to follow. Overall great teacher!
Great intro class for those who struggle with English/writing. She has a specific way she likes her students to write her papers and outside that she will grade harsher. If you are a strong writer and want a more challenging thought provoking class I would suggest someone else. Diverse texts and 3 essays in total. Must take LART 250 with it!
Really cares about her students and gives a lot of time during class to work on essays and ask questions. Very chill and laid back. As long as you actually read and do the work you'll be fine
she really cares about what she does. such an amazing professor whom I still know years after taking her course.
The only reason I did not pass was due to personal issues but Prof. Sartwell was definitely a caring and understanding professor when I let her know what was going on and she worked with me on how I could catch up on missing work. Her assignments aren't hard but she is a little picky when it comes to essays.
She is an amazing professor u can even talk to outside of class. You need to work a little for that grade but def not impossible to get an A. Just stay on top of reading and try to go to every class. She is really nice and funny and will really like you if you participate.
it's an 8-unit course, so be prepared to have a lot of work to do (homework mostly every day but not heavy; 4 essays in total); in-class group work counts, so participation matters; caring, friendly, dedicated teacher; clear in grading; gives a lot of good feedback on my essays; keep track of your progress, do all the work, and u'll be fine
