The last comment was really unfair. Professor Simmons is awesome. She's funny, articulate and knowledgeable. What more do we want?
Professor Simmons is a terrific role model. She's really fun and makes a boring class interesting. Take anything you can with this prof.
Shes dynamic and exciting. I enjoyed all her classes. I hope all my proffs are like her.

very energetic and friendly prof, really knows her stuff and is passionate about teaching it
she's so so ...
BIG chip on this shoulder. Very good content during lectures. A little too high strung. Assignments looked as though they were stolen from a trivial pursuit game. Terrible managing TA's and her class time. Showed up a week late to teach one semester. WTF&
Prof Simmons is one of my favourites so far. I wish I had discovered her earlier on in my Guelph career. She has a great attitude, she's always clear in her thoughts, and very helpful. Take her classes if you can.
Fun teacher, a little poor at managing time, but that made my allnighter a bit easier.
Professor Simmons overall was a good professor all her lectures were in powerpoint and WebCT. She covered recent news events relating it to the course material. Some lectures suffered from blandness, but overall it was a good class with a great weigting system.
Chip on her shoulder? It sounds like you've got the chip on your shoulder! (see below) She's really enthusiastic and helps you outside of class too. Made the course fun and you learn alot too.
Prof Simmons made me want to change my major so that I can take more POLS courses - take anything you can with her
she's SO obsessed with having made it out of her small time rut that she does nothing to further her efforts as a professor
What an amazing prof. She is enthusiastic and tries her best to make the classes interesting. Who would have thought talking about jurisdiction boundaries and the constitution would have been so much fun?!
Prof Simmons is a really interesting prof and she's really bubbly and lively. Her final is kind of tough, though.
Shes sooo helpful outside of class really cares about what happens to her students when they graduate.
Coming into university I had no interest in politics, I took one course from her and that changed, this woman brings the soap opera out of Canadian politics and actually makes them exciting! She is the best teacher/professor I have ever had and I completely recommend her to anyone!
she's funny and she makes the subject as interesting as possible.
Awesome prof and program.
Course is fairly organized, yet she is rather boring to listen to.
Shes an average lecturer...I've seen better. She could be better organized and more polite.
Goes out on a limb for students. Maybe suffers from burnout at times, probably due to students taking advantage of her availabilty and patience.
An awesome teacher, and does let the students take advantage of her... needs to be more firm! haha, but overall she made politics really enjoyable and fun!
The most needlessly sarcastic prof I've ever had. Makes you look like a complete moron if you ask a question.
insanely easy, really nice prof, helpful, class notes are very clear I didn't read the book, everything comes off her lectures as much as she says study the book, wrong don't do it, study the lecture slides!
Engaging, high level of energy, interesting, definitely worth taking a course with.
A little strange. Gives me the heebie-jeebies. Body language does not match her reputed demeanor. Not sure if she's nice or trying too hard to appear nice.
Loved this class. Can't wait to take more with this professor. She's really clear and very helpful during office hours.
Even though I wasn't interested in POLS, I really liked this class and never missed a lecture. She made it fun!
Awesome prof! Canadian politics can be dull but her passion for the subject makes her lectures worth attending. Very easy marker for essays; final was tougher but still fair. Highly recommended!
She is a super friendly professor. I found her fairly easy in first year courses but demands much more out of senior students. Third and fourth year students should be prepared to work hard to obtain a good grade in her classes. Go to her office hours to gain a better insight, super accomodating.
Be prepared to work. Readings will be mandatory and the assignments are fairly difficult unless you have a firm grasp on the course material
I LOVE HER. She is so understanding. She is amazing. She gave our whole class an additional 20% on our midterms, she pushed back the essay due date a week, and she put all weight on the exam for anyone who did badly on the midterm. Also, she is SO CUTE. HER LAUGH GIVES ME HOPE. SHE LOVES FISCAL FEDERALISM. I just love her. She is perfect.
yes, bumped up the midterm mark by 20% but it's because she had us write 3 essays in an 80 minute exam. many people were very upset.
Worst course I've taken. Prof is good, but group project makes up half your final grade. If you're stuck in a lousy group, be prepared to drop the course (much like the situation that I was in). She is OK at providing feedback but sometimes it is more critical than helpful. Overall don't take this course unless you have to.
I used to like taking POLS courses at Guelph before this one. Apparently she thought it was OK to leave out specific instructions on a major group project. Didn't even mention what citation style to use until last minute. If you want students to do well why leave out such important information? Avoid this class.
I absolutely despised this class- and her. I asked her for help via email, had to send it again due 2 no response. Finally, she answered in most ambiguous, most non-helpful way possible. The project outlines are EXTREMELY vague. Horrible class. Bought textbook, don't even need it. All about lectures, which she speak VERY quickly- never repeats.
The kindest prof and person. She is so understanding, she treats her students with respect, and she will help you if she asks. In her fourth year seminars she is more relaxed with due dates and guidelines which allows you to take your time, absorb the content, and do well. Take her course! She should be getting paid millions!
Honestly, best professor Ive ever had. Going to her office hours quite often, I can say that she really does care about helping you. She will go out of her way to steer you in the right direction. She accommodates with deadlines and marks. I've had so many personal conversations with her as well, she's an amazing professor as well as person.
She actually cares about student's mental health.. She lets you hand in things when you can instead of choosing a set due date in 4th year classes. Amazing. Seriously helped me out so many times over the years in my undergrad.
Professor Simmons is a great professor. Her lectures are interesting and she always supplements the lecture with relevant video clips. She incorporates contemporary issues and news articles as well. She does a great job of offering several ideological perspectives and is not biased in her instruction (not all poli sci profs can say that)
Professor Simmons is an enthusiastic and understanding prof. We did a simulation of a First Ministers Conference and it has been the highlight of my undergrad assignments so far. Really creative way to learn! You've got to attend lectures, though. Reading the textbook isn't anywhere close to enough to do well in this class.
Currently taking the DE version. Everyone in the class hates the way she has chosen to teach. Her version of teaching is making students watch youtube videos and read the textbook, there isnt actual teaching that she personally does. She also doesnt provide marks until about a month after despite there being discussion posts every single week.
REALLY tough marker. Decent prof though. Had her online; doesnt answer her emails or let you know who the TAs are.
Unanimously frustrating to most of the students in the course, mostly due to the fact that she was quite difficult to get win contact with. Also, kind of a hard marker.
Professor Simmons cares a lot about her students. Great Prof!
Grading criteria for the assignments is very unclear , and marks take a long time to get back. Currently taking the DE version, which is not great at all we have no lectures only youtube videos that are pointless and reading the textbook, there isnt actual teaching done by her.
She grades ridiculously slow and gives vague instructions for assignments. She answers questions differently each time you ask. Not the worst prof but definitely frustrating
Loved Professor Simmons so much. She was so caring and understanding when I had my concussion. Gave me as much time as I needed for the written assignment and quiz. Easy A if you read the material and participate in the discussions. Im a first year and took this course expecting it to be way worse. She was a great Prof
Assignment rubrics were vague, and didn't get much help from reaching out to the professor. A tough grader and took forever to respond to emails. Be prepared to watch long YouTube videos and do lots of readings each week.
Does not want to see her students succeed. I had reached out to inquire about a paper, which was a complete waste of time. Very disappointed with the experience.
Horrible marker, content does not make sense, takes a long time to respond to emails, does not care about students. I would avoid this class at all costs.
People are saying her online courses weren't great, but profs don't have control over the format. I took her in person 2300 and it was very clear. She even has bubbles on her slides which track where she is in the lecture. A lot of indigenous content. But she kept it interesting. She's a very fair marker. She is really there for students.
Her lectures SUCK! the way she speaks makes it so hard to take valuable notes. she cannot teach clearly or even relate the content of the textbook to her slides. she rambles about nonsense and then puts questions on the quizzes that have no relation to what she presented. I would definitely not take her class again.
Took this class and hated it. Her lectures never made any sense, and her quizzes were always confusing. Would never take a class with her again!
Incredibly test and lecture heavy yet her lectures have no substance and the content is inaccessible outside of them. SUXXX!!!!!! Does not respond to emails within a reasonable time. Very unorganized slides and instructions, riddled with spelling errors!!!!
She's a nice person but not a great lecturer, she can be difficult to follow. Not to mention a lot of her quiz content is taken from the slides, but these are disorganized and don't help much with studying. This makes it hard to engage with the content, and can be a bit boring.
Julie Simmons is one of the most unprofessional professors I have encountered. She makes you scared to ask questions cause she will treat you as though you are an idiot for asking and not understanding the field she has studied for years. Do not take her if you have any form of anxiety as she will just make it worse.
Prof Simmons really cares about her students. Totally approachable and makes the content actually interesting. Very fair. lectures are entertaining
This was a mandatory course for me. I wasn't into the content, but shes really enthusiastic and makes you want to know more. Assessmens are mostly on lecture content, so go to class.
rating speaks for itself.
Actually somehow manages to be worse than Adomait. Extremely unprofessional in the exam period.
Classic narcissist. I took a graduate course with her many years ago. I still think about it to this day. Condescending and belittling in class, except to those she favoured. Lacked internal confidence and used her position over students to feed her narcissism. I was very glad to never have to take a class with her again.
Honestly seems nice, but a proctored exam, instructions not always the clearest. Biggest issue was scheduling. Units run on a Thursday to Wednesday basis, which took over weekends. Incredibly confusing and frustrating in comparison to every other class on a Monday to Friday basis. I'd probably take in person with Simmons but this was unmanageable.
Very nice, but 15-16 page essay with pre-submitted bibliography of 20 sources minimum. If it's not required, I wouldn't bother.
Professor Simmons was overall good at explaining assignments. However, the final paper is 15 pages, which is extremely tedious and took a while to research. The paper requires at least 20 newspaper articles plus additional research, such as academic journals. If the paper wasn't so specific, I think I would have enjoyed the class more.
Personal notes if taking DE course with her - stay on top of readings - write notes on every single detail of readings, they will be on the test whether or not they seem important to the greater issue - start projects well ahead of time - schedule in times of the week for discussion posts prof does not summarize info. If taking course, memorize all
Simmons is a really good professor and a very kind person. While her lectures are engaging and amusing at times, this course is without a doubt the most boring and uninteresting course that I have taken. If you're considering taking it as an elective, don't. The final paper is also tedious and takes a lot of time to do.
Worst POLS professor @ Guelph. Take at your own risk.
WARNING. DO NOT TAKE
Super kind, does not like people leaving class or talking in class. Very interesting lectures and super accommodating if you need anything.
Professor Simmons is kind and very thoughtful. She can be disorganized at times but she is always willing to help students out and she is generous with her time.
tough grader, has a bit of an attitude
If you say an opinion that doesn't align with hers, she will respond in a condescending tone. She claims her test has no surprises. However, her lectures are very unorganized, making it difficult to know what to study and what will be on the test. This could be a really good class. However, she makes it so much more difficult to get through.
Professor Simmons often pushes her strong political agenda and goes off-topic during the lecture making it hard to tell if she's sharing her opinion or discussing relevant course material, her slides are overloaded with information, and that combined with her rants makes note taking a nightmare. Would strongly not recommend.
Professor Simmons content was very hard to follow in and out of class. Her slides were poorly organized and her midterms/final was very difficult. She is a kind person but her teaching style is not for everyone.
She is a nice person, but her lectures were very disorganized and hard to follow. It was hard to tell if she was teaching course material or ranting about her political views. Her tests are awful and she would also blame the class for poor grades, but it's due to the fact that she can not teach properly.
Dr. Simmons is a kind prof with engaging lectures, can get a bit off track but related to current political events which makes the class more interesting! By far one of the most useful classes I have taken in my degree. Midterms were difficult, but with a fairly healthy curve and lots of free marks through participation.
This professor is a tough marker. A lot of people did bad on the midterm because the study suggestions she made in class are what I used to study and I still did horribly on the midterm. The format of the tests are straightforward but the questions themselves I don't think tie in strongly with the in-class lectures. Would not recommend.
I found this class really easy, and the instructor makes it interesting. She's open to other people's views but she'll make you question why you believe what you believe. If you come to class, and are engaged in the world around you, you'll do well.
Prof Simmons was supportive of first year students in her class and there are a lot. She's really helpful in office hours and when you go to her classes its a lot of basic information about politics in Canada. She's not teaching next year but for sure I will look to take her fourth year course when I get there.
Lots of ways to boost your grade and she curved the tests. There's a lot of indigenous stuff. Really approachable outside of class.
If you come to class you'll be fine. If you don't you won't. Like don't assume you'll pass by reading the textbook. Tests mostly on lectures. She's really enthusiastic about what she does.
Lots of favouritism and bias.
Hard to follow and lectures did not make sense. Just her rambling and lack of organization.
A lot of her lectures are heavily based on the reading but are supplemented by her own information. Lectures were organized fine, and I would not really consider them rambles. She did lean a little too hard into memes. I do not really know exactly why someone complained about favouritism. She had some political bias but literally everyone does lol
i made this mistake of taking this course first year. do not make that mistake. her lectures are disorganised, she speaks heavily from her own bias, and the final assignment comes straight from the 7th circle of hell. if you don't have to take this dont, you still have time to save yourself.
Simmons was my professor for POLS*2300. I feel I learned nothing in her lessons, as they were all over the place. She was very close-minded about other people's political views and made it very clear where she stood politically, which I feel is inappropriate.
Awful. Beware!
Simmons had this notion that every student was knowledgeable in certain concepts that are then built upon. this lead to her having to backtrack every lecture because people needed an explanation on the base concept. Her tests were ridiculous at times, and don't get me started on the final project. She made her political beliefs everybody's problem
