Very knowledgable in her field. Her tests aren't too hard as long as you study. She gives a study guide and always reminds she is available for office hours.
Very nice teacher and willing to help anytime. Tests aren't bad and she gives you a study guide. She knows her stuff!
She really knows what she is talking about, the tests can be difficult, but if you study and go to class you'll do fine. If you have to take an Anth course I would def. recommend her.
TONS of reading!!! have to do summaries for each of the readings. no tests, just papers. BORING class. 18 page paper due at end of semester. Unless you have a lot of time to read dont take her.
first half of the semester is boring, second half is incredibly interesting. I love her class! tests are difficult, but very interesting. you get to go dig also! great fun! I love her to pieces. she is really friendly and young so she knows what we are going through with school and what not
She is very nice, tests are hard, class is kind of boring- but gets interesting
not as easy as promised by other raters. you have to go on a field trip on a saturday, i froze to death outside in the woods in the middle of nowhere running around measuring ditches for 4 hours. you have to take really really profuse notes on everything she says if you want good grades on tests.
Test arent hard at all, just a lot of info. Go to class and you'll do fine. Class can become a little sleepy at times, but it should be an easy A or B. Was for me, at least.
Go to class. It's very easy to skip and then the test will be 2x as difficult. Take good notes and you will do better. Interesting class, but can be sort of tough.
Great professor and person. If you are an anthropology/archaeology student, get to know her! If you are interested you should attend her field school in the southwest during the summer.
Good teacher, class can get a little boring if it's not something that interests u. Go to class often, you'll do better on the tests. If this is your major, take her.
I love this professor! This is my second class with her and I am taking another one next semester. She is so clear cut and if you go to class and take notes, you can get an A. I have learned so much from Dr. Solometo and she is so brilliant. She just knows answers to all the questions you may have on the subject. she is brilliant
If you attend class, pay attention and take notes(like you're supposed to do in college) you'll do fine. She very interested in what she teaches which makes the material much easier to understand.
Pretty much the only thing I have learned from archaeology is how to spell archaeology. She has made a seemingly interesting topic pretty miserable.
Dr. Solometo is pretty cool. She's pretty laid back, although the first couple days she comes off as a little bit of hardass. No attendence policy, but it's helpful to go to class. Although, you can just find a friend in the clas to get notes from and you'll still be fine. Makes the class very interesting - knows her stuff!
Julie rocks! She has a really structured lesson plan and her lectures are informative and interesting. Not an easy class but she knows a lot and expects you to know what she teaches (it's not hard material, just in depth). Lecture notes not posted online...go to class. Film reports are easy if you WATCH THE MOVIE (don't leave 'till day of).
reallllly sweet lady with a great sense of humor... but somehow manages to make class INCREDIBLY boring... easy A
This was a very interesting class. Everyone else has given the vitals: go to class or at least get the notes, do all the little assignments, and study the study guides for the tests and you should be fine. The tests are in-depth and not easy, but if you have all the notes you should be fine. Highly recommended for ANTH 197.
Anth of War is a super interesting class. She is very passionate about the subject and is very funny/down to earth. Tough paper at the end and midterm & final were both pretty hard, but I pulled through with a B thinking I would fail, definitely take her, she and her class are awesome.
Sexy class, even if you're not an Anth major. If you show up and do the readings, you'll be fine. Study hard for the tests, as they are a large portion of your grade. She knows a lot about archaeology, but she doesn't put herself up on a pedestal. She can relay information to people very easily.
I really enjoyed this class. Interesting material, really nice professor. Tests can be a bit tricky but she adjusted her test format slightly when she felt much of the class was having trouble with a certain part. Always willing to help and is always trying to find ways to improve the class. Final was not cumulative.
Dr. Solometo's class is one of those classes that have a really cool course description and then kills your GPA. Her tests are extremely hard - be prepared to laugh at their difficulty in disbelief. Lectures drag on endlessly and the required readings are a nap waiting to happen. Nice enough as a person, but do not take this class.
This class is interesting and pretty easy. She's so nice. Her tests don't use much from the book, it pretty much all comes from class notes and article readings. If you don't go to class or get the notes from someone you won't do well on the tests. There are a few worksheets but they're really easy. The final isn't cumulative.
Nice lady, but she's not very clear on what she wants. Took me 3/4 through the year just to figure out what she wanted on the response papers. Attendance isnt mandatory, but her lectures are crucial. Doesnt put them on blackboard, so you have to go to class. Sometimes things are on the exams that you don't even remember her saying in lecture. BEWAR
There isn't a textbook, but 2 online readings and a quiz each week. The quizzes are killing my grade and the only downside to the class. Despite taking thorough notes, it's easy to miss a question and get an 80 (or miss 2 and get a 60). I wish there were more grades, but she is a great prof and the subject is interesting.
This class is a pain, but Dr. Solometo is really nice and approachable (and surprisingly hot for her age). For this course, the "easy A" mentality is BAD, but if you have any interest in the field of archaeology then Dr. Solometo is the person to start with. Just do the readings, and I mean DO THE READINGS, and see her religiously outside of class.
(anthropology of war) this class is a LOT of work- take if you're genuinely interested in tribal war. you'll probably like it if you're concentrating in archae. otherwise, be prepared for a lot of reading, intensive writing, a lot of info, all high standards. very interesting and rewarding in unexpected ways, but seriously time-consuming.
Def a hard class. We have quizzes every week that go along with the readings but even if you read they are still difficult. Tests are equally as difficult. Even going to class everyday & taking notes I didnt do so well. And for short answer on tests, if its not word for word correct, then the whole question will be wrong. Her expectations are high
I have never rated a professor until now: feeling it is necessary! Although she clearly knows her material, her expectations are ridiculously high. I took every note I could as well as read the copious amount of articles assigned and i am barely passing! Avoid at all costs!
I had Dr. Solometo for GANTH 205. Her readings are fairly short and the class activities were fun and solidify the material very effectively. She doesn't take attendance, but you really need to go to class to learn the material. It can be a little boring at times, but if you're interested in the topic then it's an awesome class.
Personally the class sounded extremely interesting to me and I figured it would be a good gened to take. I could not have been more wrong. I am a senior and had to drop this course before I fail it. VERY long readings with 5 question quizzes. Very difficult exams. Do not recommend if looking for an easy A.
Although somewhat helpful when you talk to her individually, her class is very confusing. The readings (not in your textbook) and her lectures are very tedious. Furthermore, her class has no organized structure. I would advise not taking this class unless you are okay without structure and you are VERY VERY interested in the topic.
Powerpoints arent very organized and you must take good notes to be able to study well. No textbook but there are reading quizzes on canvas that you must read for to do well. They are very easy if you read the articles. There are 3 tests and 3 essays. The essays are very specific, if you study you can do ok on the tests, but it is hard to get an A.
Overall, this was a really difficult class. She is pretty nice, but has unrealistic expectations considering it's just a gen ed. The information was interesting, but if you're looking for an easy class, find another one. 3 tests and 1 quiz every week based on readings. Exams are lecture based, going to class is vital to do well on tests.
I wanted to like Dr. Solometo so much. Her class is really interesting and she is obviously really invested in it. However, her ability as a professor wasn't top notch. She took FOREVER to grade assignments and she can get a little boring in her lectures. I personally love the subject but I don't recommend the class to someone who doesn't.
Really nice teacher, but really hard. She treats this like anthropology is your major. She is helpful in office hours and has review sessions before the tests and drops your lowest one! No textbook, but LOTS of reading for online quizzes. Don't take if you want an easy A in a gen Ed, Challenging class overall
She's really nice and you can tell she loves her job, but she's boring. She rambles off topic a lot. I felt like I was dying. The topic itself was interesting, but the way she presents it is just blah. No textbook, but there are online readings. Her notes are out of order and at times isn't clear in what she is looking for in the essays.
She can get super boring during her lectures, even though the material could actually be taught in an interesting way. There are weekly 5 question quizzes with 2 points each, based on readings she puts online that can be up to 20 pages long with small text. No textbook, but you need to go to class to get the notes.
She is an awesome professor! Super nice and definitely wants to help her students. Her tests can be a little hard and her lectures are pretty long however. Also a lot of reading. But if you do the readings and study hard for the test an easy BB+
The lectures feel like they never end. She rambles a lot and the powerpoints aren't very clear. The tests are VERY difficult and the short answer portion is hard to understand what she wants. Don't take if you don't like reading. there are weekly readings that are sometimes up to 40 pages and then weekly 5 question quizzes. GO TO CLASS!!!
Do not take this class. It is so boring. She's a nice woman, but this was the most boring class I have ever taken. You'd think it would be awesome based on the name, but its not. Tests are really difficult. IF you want to learn about what plants and animals hunter-gatherers ate for two months, then this is the class for you.
Nice lady, kinda sassy. I feel bad but everyone signs up for her class thinking it'll be interesting and then she just bores everyone to death. The readings are a waste of time because the quizzes are worded terribly. Test was too hard for a GenEd.
Solometo is awesome. She is tough but it makes you better. She gives good feedback which makes you a better writer. You have to do a final project which is hard but it's good to learn how to use GIS in an anthropological way.
Dr. Solometo is great. She has weekly readings and quizzes, and they are hard. You have to read word for word and understand every single sentence. Make sure you can put aside at least 12 hours to read the readings very carefully. She is really helpful though and wants her students to succeed I think. But her lectures are boring but she is cool.
This class reminds me of AP World in high school. There is a lot of reading, but it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. She gives study guides before the tests which are really helpful. Overall, it's not that hard, but you need to show up to class to get the notes. Also, she is a slow grader.
I really wanted to enjoy this gen ed and was sad to find out that such an interesting topic is taught in such a boring way. You have really long readings that you're quizzed on for every new topic, her test are hard and be prepared for short answer questions. her lectures are boring and the workload is for an anthropology major not a gen ed class
Hard class (if you're not in the major) but she is very approachable. She supplies study guides and holds review sessions outside of class for her exams and always encourages students to ask for extra help if they need it - tough but fair.
This class wasn't too bad. The quizzes were based on readings outside of class and there are only 5 questions on them so be sure to read carefully. Tests aren't too bad as long as you attend lecture. Nothing will be on the tests that you didn't explicitly see in class. Overall, a normal and interesting class!
Attendance is necessary because she does not post lectures/notes. There are reading quizzes with VERY long readings and they are only 5 questions and very specific. She puts out study guides for the tests that are super specific so as long as you fill it out and study it nothing will shock you on the test and you should do fairly well!
Professor Solometo was a very nice lady, but her class was extremely difficult for a Gen Ed. There is so much reading and the quizzes are extremely difficult. Her class is a big lecture and is very long, with a lot of content. Unless you are an Archeology nut, AVOID THIS CLASS!!!
AVOID!!!!! I thought I could handle the readings, but this is an insane amount of work for a gen ed. don't waste your time with this class. really really upset on how this class is going; it had so much potential to be good.
She's amazing. Class isn't easy, but so worth it. Material is dense but she explains it really well. She doesn't take attendance, but if you don't go then you're screwed for the tests. She really cares about her students and does everything she can to help you be successful. Type notes since she talks fast and doesn't post slides on Canvas.
Solometo is a very nice lady who really cares about anthropology. Her class is very lecture heavy with weekly online quizzes based on multiple long readings. Anth 205 isn't an easy A if you're just looking for a simple gen ed.
The material was interesting but she was so boring and things were always pushed back. Such a nice lady, but she expected us to know too much. Weekly quizzes on long readings. 3 tests but they weren't too bad, but she is a very slow grader. She will never respond to emails. Okay choice but I wouldn't recommend.
I took a 4-week online class with this professor and I think she was a great option! She listens to feedback, adjusts her schedule and workload to make lot easier on students, and she cares about your education, not just your grades.
I absolutely loved Dr. Solometo! Was super lenient with the course by making it asynchronous and gave students plenty of opportunities to get or keep an A. Weekly modules included 15-question quizzes but all the answers could easily be found in the readings and other assignments. Wonderful professor, would definitely take her again!
She was a nice person but her quizzes are lowkey hard because you have to read so much information and it is not always easy to find an answer for the quizzes. I spend more time worrying and reading for this class than my major courses.
Literally the worst class ever. Lectures are so boring, Quizzes are impossible, exams are literally based on every single thing we learn which is crazy. so much reading every single week. She grades so harshly. This is the worst gen ed you could possibly take.
Do not take this professor, the weekly quizzes are impossible even if you read the 40 pages of reading required for each quiz. She lets you bring one 'cheat sheet' but it doesn't matter because the tests are nothing like the study guides. Hardest gen ed I have taken, so much work, AVOID THIS CLASS!!!!
Weekly assignments aren't too bad. Lectures are easy to understand and take notes on. Very nice to interact with. Attendance is not mandatory but you need to be there to understand what is going on.
5 question reading quiz each week worth 40% of total grade. Test are HARDDDDD! And worth 45% of total grade. Lectures are okay but need to write down what she says not just the slides!
Julie is awesome, as a student you feel like she is on your side, however there is a laughable amount of reading which I'd bet no one actually does. You'll be fine in this class even if you don't do the reading (or very much of it) so I would definitely recommend the class regardless.
Based on a weekly 5 question quizzes based on readings and 3 test. You basically have to do all of the readings or you won't do well on the quizzes which have a lot of weight on your grade. I wouldn't take this class again, she's a nice person but the content is confusing and hard to follow and hard to get a good grade in.
SHe will make you love the topic. She likes it when people ask questions and enjoys talking to students. She makes the lessons interesting, and you can tell she enjoys the topic. She hands out some heavy readings but gives you reading guides to understand them better.
There are weekly readings relating to the content in class, typically about 10-20 pages, but they do not take long to finish. The quizzes related to them have all the answers within the readings and the lowest two are dropped. There are 4 exams, including the final, and three group projects, but time is given to complete them in class.
She's a super kind person and clearly cares so much about anthropology and wants us to learn. Some of the material can be kinda difficult but the tests too bad cause she lets you have a one pager. Definitely a good choice
Professor Solometo is a great teacher for a gen-ed class. Very caring and teaches well. Attendance is optional, but if you go to class you will do better on exams. Weekly reading quizzes on articles, as well as some group projects, and 3 exams(final is not cumulative) If you go to class and take decent notes, you will do fine.
good professor but the class is very heavy in information, canvas weekly reading quizzes, 3 exams and a final, exams cover a lot of material and the material isnt the easiest to understand and someone who isnt that into ANTH and did it for the gen-ed...id take another class in this cluster
I really liked her. She is super sweet when you get sick and can't come to class or miss a test.
There is a decent amount of reading. I did get by just fine without reading all of it, but it can hold you back if you do poorly on the weekly reading quizzes (5 questions). The tests aren't too difficult if you pay attention in class. She is very nice and will work with you if needed. Tests are not cumulative and she allows a cheat sheet.
Attendance not mandatory but needed to pass. Super harsh grading even if you're not an Anth major. Readings are sometimes very very long and are very hard to understand and read. Little words on PowerPoint and just talks so you don't know what to write. would not recommend if you are bad at reading comprehension and not an Anth major
She is a good professor. She had quizzes every week where the lowest two are dropped. There are some group activities and there are three tests and the final isn't cumulative. Attendance isn't mandatory b/c she posts all of the slides but going to class more usually gives you a higher grade for her class. Overall, I would take her.
Really amazing professor, really detailed lectures and readings with information that you cant find in a simple google search. If you go to class, do the reading quizzes, and study you will do fine. Take her!!!!
Professor Solometo is awesome. Such a funny and caring person. There is quite a bit of reading and it really is all lectures in class. She is tough grading tests, but there's lots of other ways to improve your grade which is how I got a B-. ANTH 205 was hard for a GenEd. I wouldn't take this class again, but I would take a class from her again.
Despite not taking attendance, lectures are so important to succeeding in this class. She does readings for each unit (1-3 articles) which are used in the 3 tests, so keep up with those. She's very caring and will send lecture notes and accommodate you if you miss class (or an exam). She loves what she teaches, and I genuinely loved her class.
Professor Solometo is a great professor. She has so much interesting information and experiences to share. As far as the class goes. DONT TAKE IT, unless you want to read at least 60 pages a week. There is so much information to learn for one test, and the tests are difficult. There are weekly quizzes and readings. For a gen ed don't take this.
Professor Solometo really loves what she teaches. There are a lot of reading assignments with weekly quizzes based on them, and they aren't light readings. The midterm and final have a lot of content so it's absolutely necessary to study, but she does allow one page of notes. Hard for a gen-ed but still really interesting to learn!
I absolutely adored this class! Dr. Solomento does a phenomenal job with teaching the material in an engaging way. I found the coursework to not be challenging at all, but there are a lot of readings. The readings aren't bad, and she gives you plenty of time throughout the week to complete the quiz, but try not to get behind.
I loved her as a person, and the class was super enjoyable. It is a very hard concept to grasp because of the extent of knowledge you need to know on the test. People did poorly at the beginning of the year, so she implemented attendance as extra credit, which saved me in the end. Don't worry too much, but be ready to read for weekly quizzes!!
Dr. Solometo is one of the most considerate professors I've had so far. She gave us so many opportunities to succeed and gave us extra credit for attendance about halfway through the semester. The content itself can be difficult, but if you go to class and do the weekly readings, it shouldn't be hard to do well in the class.
As an anth major, anth 205 with Dr. Solometo is fairly easy. It's a lot of memorization, but the tests are open note. As a gen ed, the class is super interesting if you like history. Dr. Solometo is also suuuuper understanding and curves like crazy. Love her!
What to expect: weekly quizzes, 3 exams, lectures, and a lot of readings Why it's not bad: quizzes are open note, and exams allow you to bring a single page of notes. However, you can cram as much as you want on that page so it's super easy to have all the knowledge you need. The quizzes are on the readings, so you do need to actually read them.
Dr. Solometo is a very nice person. Her class is very lecture-heavy, and you most likely will fail if you do not show up. Her exams aren't awful, as long as you study. If you are someone who has a demanding major and wants to take easy Gen Eds, I don't recommend this class because of the amount of information on each exam.
The hardest gen-ed i've taken. Showed us test scores over the past 4 years which all have more F averages on the tests than A's and B's combined but said that it was "our fault" although the material on the tests are never covered during lecture. Gives extra credit on tests and curves it based on results, but most students average 70% or lower.
She's great and I honestly had a lot of fun in this class, but there are almost weekly readings that can take HOURS, quizzes on the readings (taken at home) but if u try to use ai it gets like half the questions wrong. attendance is graded. she's a good professor and I would take her again just for the vibes but lowk a lot of work for gened
