Not a good teacher at all, she doesn't provide help when i asked she told me "im not doing your work" well she wasnt doing her work either which was suppose to be teaching. I think most the class barely got by with just a C in the class.
you need to befriend her and she has trouble lecturing but is wiling to work with you for a good grade.
she must have been my worst teacher ever. almost everyone dropped or barely passed with a C. she lost one of my grades and had to bug me after the semester was over, but passed me for good attendence.
She's nice, but incredibly confusing. She doesn't make what she wants in the essays clear, and she's really picky about MLA and is inconsistent in her grading.
NO!! Group projects are horrible. My partner didnt do any of his work for the group project, and she "lost" pages of the paper "we" turned in(!0pts worth). When it came to grading,I had an 88% and called her on the missing points . She told me I would get a B whether i like it or not. Avoid !
Julie, is a great, inspiring teacher. I took her for two semesters and would continue if I could. She is very positive and wants you to learn. She is very helpful and actually CARES about her students!!!
I personally believe that the class is pretty easy. she lets us leave early and we dont really do that much but read. but the bad thing is the essays. she doesnt do a good job explaining how she wants them and she grades extremely hard. everyone in the class basically gets C's
By far the worst teachers I ever had. She missed more classes than the students. Extremely vague on the essays. When I went to her office hours she was either not there or extremely rude. I would advoid her at all cost. Also she lost one of my essays which she seems prone to do. Take any one but her
I agree with the previous review completely. She was frequently unavailable during office hours, and lost one of my essays. Also EXTREMELY biased when it came to grading essays. There wasn't a whole lot of work involved, but it's very hard to get an A. AVOID.
I was hopeing to get inspired in this class. Quite the opposite happened. She is very unclear in what she wants in her papers. She missed 3 classes, was late most of the time, and was often not at her office hours. I learned nothing.
Julie Thompson is by far the worst English teacher I've ever had in my life!!! She grades extremely hard and unfair on essays. She acts and grades like she is teaching at an Ivy league school. I'v never had a teacher that graded so unfair and bias. NEVER TAKE JULIE THOMPSON.........EVER.
She is the worst english teacher ever! She dosent explain her essays enough to understand what she is looking for! Never take thompson if you have to take ANY english class.

Julie was a little confusing, and maybe a little unclear at times but if you took to check in with her she's there. Group project was o.k. but only because we all were committed, others were screwed, would I take her again, sure I took her class for English 302 and 100 and she was fine.
Julie is a good discussion leader. She's not necessarily teaching when she does so either, to do well in her class one must take on their own responsibility for learning and stay involved in the discussions, their usually interesting and won't take much out of you if you have an enjoyment for critical and/or abstract thinking
Personally I enjoyed the class. There was a lot of reading and discussion, 4 essays, an easy test, and a group research project. The essay grading was a little demanding, but overall I got a lot out of the course.

Don't waste your time. There are good Eng. teachers out there, she is not one of them!
Woah! I am soo glad I didn't get her for english 1a!!! To give you an idea of what to expect...our classes first assigned papers were ranging from C minuses to Fs!
Possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. Assignments are utterly incomprehensible and when you go to your office hours you leave more confused than before. I'm considered a good writer but I could not of me figure out what she wanted in my essays and was marked down. Also, she's bitter and resents High School students in her class. I cried 3 times
Does not help to find a deeper meaning in the readings, simply overviews it. Essay prompts aren't clear, very broad making it hard to pull specific evidence. Assignments are pointless such as freewrites that are never counted, and is often unhappy/angry when coming to class. Take another teacher for English, she's a waste.
I would only recommend this class if you want to challenge yourself, personally I thought it was hard to follow and boring. This class prepares you for an english class at Harvard. SHE IS BIG ON MLA STYLE FORMAT AND PUNCTUALITY. <Quick story> wrote an 800 word essay, other students read it and said they liked it, turned it in and got a D. Thanks
SHE TALKS TOO MUCH WHEN YOU ASK HER STUFF!SHE'S HELLA STRICT!!!VERY HARD!
She doesn't get her point across when you ask her questions. She works her way around what you really asked. She is very unhelpful and grades extremely HARD.

I took this class in HS to fulfill a grad. requirement. I got a perfect 800 on the SAT II Writing, and in my 1st Sem. at Boston College got an A in my writing class, from a History PROFESSOR who writes books. She told me I was one of the best frosh writers she's ever seen. "Professor" Thompson gave me a C and told me I was a terrible writer. Huh?
Terrible, terrible teacher. I go to Middleburry College now and I'm considered a good writer. She always had some issue with my papers (probably cus I was in High School @ the time) and I spend a MONTH at EVERY SINGLE office hour she had and always left more confused, angry, and helpless than when I got there. I would cry often during this class.
I find that Julie explains English in a very understandable way. She, also, is very helpful in supplying her students with all of the resources needed for being successful in whatever route they take in life. If you want to learn something knew and become a better writter and reader I suggest taking English with Julie.
She is not helpless. Her class is so difficult. I had to drop the class.
this is an awful teacher. she seems nice at first but then she turns out to be unfair and unforgiving, and then she laughs right in your face. the worst teacher ever. try to avoid her at all costi did an assignment that she believed was inadiquet and gave me a 0 of 25. not even partial credit.
she is a very bad teacher. on our first essay she read the first page and wrote in the margin that i did not follow the directions, and gave me a x/100, along with a good percentage of the class. I have recieved A's on a good majority of essays in ever other class i have taken, and recieved a 4 out of 5 on the SAT essay writing. she is terrible
Spiteful woman. Very unhelpful and unaproachable. Don't bother with her office hours because you'll end up way more confused than before, and she gets annoyed @ you and you get a correspondingly lower grade. Just mean, unfriendly, and detrimental to actually learning. She seems nice at first, don't be fooled. Completely unqualified to be a teacher.
such a meticulous teacher (and i use the word "teacher" loosely). Classes are boring, papers are pointless, and you couldn't last anything longer than a 2 hour class with her without falling asleep. Do not take this class if you are expecting to pass English 1A.
On the first writing assingment she gave half the class zeros and questioned where we learned to write. She failed to be at her office hours for the personal conference she required for all of us who didn't meet her standards. Her writing assignments allow absolutely no creativity, they must be exactly what she wants. An unforgiving, souless, wit
WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD! single handedly made me hate and drop english. I will never take another english class ever agian as long as live for fear of finding another teacher like Julie Thompson! For those poor souls that are still stuck in her class i wish you luck... you will need it! ALSO DO NOT EXPECT ANY USEFULL HELP FROM HER!
She really KNOWS English but lectures are often long and boring, especially with MLA; she's extremely strict on MLA. Talking to her will leave you a lot more confused than before. There's not a whole lot of writing, but it takes a lot of effort and her grading is harsh. Work hard.
The week starts off nice. She seems like a sweet teacher. Let's write an essay on Honey Bees. The essays are returned by the next class with comments like 'nice' and 'I like this'. After 1st week every class has a reading assignment related to it. The essays are then 1000-1200 words and are graded relentlessly. Talking to her is just confusing.
Julie Thompson has much to offer her students. If you're in school to buy time so you don't have to work, or to be handed easy A's, this is not the class for you. Howevor, if you're in school to expand your conciousness and become an aware, multi-faceted individual who can write worth a damn then you'll feel at home in her class!Highly recommended
she is a nice person, but she has no clairity or focus when teaching. it makes sense in her head, but to her students, absolute jumble. her grading methods for papers is rigid, tought, and just down right too much.
Julie Thompson is one of the WORST teachers I have ever had. She assigns so much homework and so many long essays. She is so CONFUSING. I tried really hard in her class, but she is never satisfied. The most important thing is that she doesn't make any sense. By the end of the semester there were only 9 students in her class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
i liked her if you need help go to her office and ask questions if you show intrest than you will get a good grade four essays and a final research project which is so easy it will bring up your grade if you dont do well on the essays.
Hard class...lots of work. but if your actually here to learn you'll do fine. She's always willing to help or answer e-mails.
She explained the format for paper outlines on the 1st day. I added the class on the 2nd day. She told me, "It would be unfair to the other students if I gave you the instructions. You are irresponsibe for adding late, so I am punishing you." She gave me C's on the papers. She told me the papers were good but the outlines were not what she wanted.
Some teachers are difficult and challenging in order to expand your horizons and help you to grow as a person and a writer. Not Julie. So don't think that the people saying she's hard are saying it because they're lazy. I love taking challengling courses, but Julie was difficult just to exercise her "power" over you. Very spiteful. Should be fired!
By far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She is rude and has an annoying presence. I had a close friend die and she told me it wasn't her problem. Drop that class with the quickness. Good class to get some homework done for other classes...but that's about all. It's hard to listen and learn from someone you cant stand!
she lets lets you redo papers, she gives extensions on papers if you need them, if you talk with her, she pretty much writes the paper for you... she's pretty chill. I don't know what anyone else is talking about. She's even kinda funny, and she looks like Tina Fey. She rambles a lot, but its all the stuff she wants on the paper. so, she's fine.
I was hoping in this English Class to learn how to write a proper essay but she is horrible. Terrible scattered and really unclear on essay assignments and a unfair grader. The highest grade I got in the class was a B-. Avoid her, very difficult. Even thought I managed a C. Not fun, take someone else. Office hours you leave more confused than ever.
Honestly if you put the effot into her class you will easily pass. You read a fair amount and write a number of papers...also you give a few reports but other than that there is no stupid homework to do and as i said before, IF YOU DO THE WORK you will easily pass.
Horrible, I am getting good grades, but thats because I study 50 hours for each test and essay!!!!!! Very rude, not clear, and unhelpful. She does not care what the circumstances are, its not her problem. She is a huge pain, and becuase she understands what she want, she doesn't get that her class does not! I really do not like her.
This class was a challenge, but I learned a lot. She does expect that you do the work, but she is very willing to help and lets you rewrite papers for a higher grade. She will help you if you need it, and if you put the effort in, you will do well. Also there was no final, just a research project which was nice.
I have/am taking her class as of Spring 2008.I love the way she has structured the class so that we concentrate on how essays should be written then the second half of the semester we write a coupple essays.just show up & listen & do your HW & you will be fine. She lets u revise work for better grade.I recommend. You will learn alot of helpful skills
wow! my first english class at the jc and what a mistake it was to not check this website before I signed up. Julie is by far one of the most horrible teachers I've ever had. The class started out with 30 some students, and ended with only 8! No one could tolerate her! Your in for a challenge with her
Juilie, is a great teacher! I learned a lot in her class. She did expect that you did the work but there wasn't much homework just reading. It was interesting reading though. She's interested in science so we did a lot of science reading. She was very clear and willing to help, as long as you do the work. She lets you revise papers for a better gr
You earn the grade you receive. The first half of the class is essay-intensive, but there is barely any homework for the last few weeks. Fairly long reading sections, easy final. She's very helpful if you ask. The reading selections she chooses are interesting and thought provoking; I would recommend her. Do the homework and you'll get an A.
I came out of this class with unbelievable improvement on my essay writing skills. Tough but worth it
Thompson is amazing! She will take all the time she has just to help you revise your essays. There are quizzes everyday but very easy if you just read the books. Two huge essays but she helps you out soooo much! I recommend taking her if you are dreading writing tons of essays or even if you really bad at writing them! Take her!
WOW, this woman is a monster. I would say the worst teacher I have ever had in my 15 years of school. DO NOT TAKE HER. She should be fired, she is a horrible woman, boring as anything I can imagine and does not help you with anything at all. She is the reason kids hate English.
I dont know why everyone is saying she is a monster and a horrible teacher. She is probably one of few that teach at this school who actually TEACH ENGLISH. She might grade hard but thats what school is about. She is amazing at clarifying things. Only two huge papers but its worth it! Im taking her again or sure!
I really enjoyed taking ENGL 100 with Julie Thompsn. The work was not overbearing at all and she made the classes very interesting. Very engaging. I'm looking forward to taking ENGL 1A with her.
WORST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER!!! Definately is the type of teacher that makes people hate english. She asks for certain things for you to do on the essays, but then has someone else grade it differently! She is very inconsistent on her grading. She will grade you down if she doesnt like you and she won't accept your work if late even if with excuse.
She is a really good teacher and cares a lot about her students. If you pay attention and put effort in she will teach you a lot.
I did not enjoy this class at all. I found myself dreading this class. She does these stupid group activities that are completely pointless! The way she wanted us to write the essays were completely the opposite of what I had been previously taught. I would not reccommend this teacher at all.
I loved this teacher. She explained everything crystal clear.
The class started out pretty easy, but dont be fooled. She is VERY picky about her essay format, but if you follow it and go to her office hours (which arent always convenient) for help, even if it's a horrible essay you will get an A. I don't think I wrote one decent essay in that class, but I worked my butt off, followed her format, and got the A
Julie is a wonderful teacher!! She gives you all the tools to write great papers, and having the rough draft due a week before the paper itself really kept me on track. She is very helpful and passionate about her job. I definitely improved my writing skills more that I ever would have hoped. She chose great essays and poems. Highly recommend!!!
Julie is very nice and is pretty helpful, and understanding. She is extremely picky about her essays, but willing to go over them with you during her office hours! Just do ALL the work and you will get a good grade. I recommend her.
She is useless during class. she is unhelpful, refused to answer my questions multiple times. The tests were hard but fair if you read the books. Essays will destroy you unless they're perfect. DO NOT TAKE
This woman is awful. Her teaching is the complete opposite of what other English professors expected in past classes. She has always a mean looking appearance and has intense body odor that makes it difficult to work next to her. I did all of my work, studied for the exams, had my papers reviewed at Sonoma State and got a C- . . . BEWARE
Since i had gotten into 302, i didnt know ANYTHING about writing essays. we had tests everyday which were short essays. she never tought us how to write an essay. it was ridiculous. i missed 3 classes because i was sick so i emailed her and she pretty much said to not come back because 'theres no way i will pass' and to 'have a nice year' DONT TAKE
i took this class because I needed prep. for 1A. She was the meanest teacher that I ever had. Didn't teach us to write, when you asked question she ignored, when asked again, screamed "WHAT?" One of my essays was reviewed by a professor in the writing lab. Still got a C- on it. Her picture is all telling: nasty, unhelpful, and a strange odor.
Granted there must be something in all these ratings, I think she's a good teacher. She gives out detailed assignments, lets you rewrite papers; papers not hard once you know what she's looking for (support thesis, follow assignment). Interesting readings. I've found her helpful and nice, not at all mean. I suggest you at least give her a try.
It's impossible to get a good grade if you don't go to her office hours. But if you do, she'll give you all the time and help in the world.
Awesome Teacher! If you treat her with respect, pay attention in class, and do your work she is a great teacher! I got an A in the class...not bad for a high school drop out.
I do NOT like English. I liked Julie because even though her class wasn't very easy, it was much easier to get through because many of her topics were interesting. We only read one book and only did five essays.
We read Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which is a really good book, but she also made us read a ton of boring essays that she quizzed us on. If you go to her office, you can get As on her essays but the topics are painfully boring. English can be so enlivening but I just found it really flat in her class.
I thought she was a great teacher. One of the nicest teachers I've had. BUT class is NOT easy. But if you do all your homework and attend the class you'll get full credit. The essays she's really tough on. Even with getting them edited by other teacher still never received a grade higher than a C. If you ask for help shes more than willing to help
Quite demanding and unfortunately bland. Very knowledgeable, but lacking connection with students in class. Definitely have had worse classes though.
I really enjoyed this class. She expects a lot from her students but that's normal in college. She is very helpful if you take the time to visit her during office hours and actually take the time to write the drafts of your essays and get the required editing from the writing center.
USE THE WRITING CENTER! Have your papers gone over at least twice before handing them in and you should be fine. Her explanations on assignments could be more clear but if you ask questions and show her your drafts before handing them in. She is very sweet and puts forth a great deal of effort for her students.
This teacher was very unclear on her expectations for all of the assignments. Her essays were confusing and if your schedule conflicts with her one office hour, then good luck getting help. I have always thrived in English and in this class i am struggling to get a C grade.
Total waste of a semester. She grades everything by HER standard so expect to forget all you ever learned. She is extremely unclear and disorganized. Rude when approached by students. Grades harshly and tests are a joke and in no way show that you understand the materials it is merely a lotto card. She is very passively aggressive, JUST AVOID HER..
Do not take this class. midterm was for us to read 25 poems and memorize every line and then she picked a various line and made us identify who wrote the poem. Hardest thing ever when there are about 300 hundreds you have in your head. She grades really tough on essays. There is no homework. but outlines and essay drafts are due throughout.
She is a great professor. I needed a lot of help with my essays and she was their for me. I would take her again. Very friendly
Very nice lady but very unclear of her expectations as well as her grading scale.
I have always been on the lenient side when it comes to teachers, but when it comes to this professor I will have to join in and say she has excessive expectations. She grades very rigorously, she acts as if this is the only class you are taking, and she has limited available office hours too. If you're not an English major good luck!
This class was fantastic for the time I could take it. Unfortunately, I had to drop this class as I had unforeseen medical problems happen inside my family. When I told this professor about my predicament, she went above and beyond helping me get everything I needed to be done with not only this class but my other classes too. A wonderful teacher.
