Easy 2 understand
exams were to hard
Excellent instructor. very helpful. tough when marking assignments but usually gives bonus marks to compensate ... I enjoyed the course despite of the huge amount of work
Exams were way too hard and marking was unfair. Nice person just not the greatest professor for this course- might have been because it was her first year teaching though!
Very clear and excited about material. She is extremely helpful and does not mind explaining things (even over again). She is also very approachable. I really like her, one of the best profs I have had. She is also extremely fair though she expects a lot. Gives you something to live up to.
Too many errors in her own solutions to the midterms and exams.
She is really interested in teaching her course, however she is really brutal when writting her final and midterms. Her midterms are not even fair... It was just brutal. She even admitted that it was on purpose to show what engineering was at other schools.. or maybe she wanted to challenge us. Passing her course was my main challenge of 2nd year.
makes you love the course
Watchout!!!!
Harder than ENGG*2400, rather have dony teaching the course!
Hard prof, hard marker, probably the hardest course in 2nd year engineering. As a mechanical engineering student I found it hard, but definitely the harder than fluids. Make sure to keep yourself on top of things.
Not sure what her problem is! I wish Prof Dony taught this course. She is really hard at marking and never understood what exactly she wanted. Getting a 50 in her course is a mission
Although people typically give her a terrible rap, when i first met her this year i learned that she isnt the monster many make her out to be. Yes circuits is crazy difficult but that has more to do with the course rather than the professor.
I give her props on explaining the course material really well, and both the final and midterm were extremely fair. She is willing to help those who ask for help. I highly suggest doing the extra problems she assigns as those were mostly on the midterm and final.
I don't care what people think of her, she is one of the best profs I have had. She might not be the easiest prof but she teaches very well. You walk out of her class actually learning, which results in good marks. She clarifies concepts so well. If you put in the effort you will do well in her class!
She's a great teacher and easy to follow along with in class. The exams were really challenging, a lot tougher than average.
Nice lady, she does her best to help her students. Just couldn't wrap my head around the way she taught her theory as I failed it once with her, dropped it second time because i didn't want to risk her grading scheme. Passed with a breeze at Ryerson. Tough marker and tricky questions!
She is amazing and hard working professor. Motivates the students to work hard and be successful. If full attention is paid and all lectures are attended you will figure the concepts faster. She is the best at clarity.
Shes hard but fair, if youre someone who crams the night before. You will not pass her class, but she always has office hours for her classes and her lectures are on point. Defintiely one of the better profs in guelph.
She is not very nice. She does not treat her students with respect, or in a professional manner. She always seems angry, or pissed off. She then teaches hard courses the are hard to pass, then her personality makes it hard to show up to class, or see her for extra help--as she is intimidating and unfriendly.
Had her for both 2450 and 3410 (in the same semester b/c I'm a dumbass). I think Vale's one of the best profs I have had as of yet, her lectures are great and she is really able to convey her knowledge. She sets tough exams but if you pay attention in class and keep up with the course material you will do fine.
interesting class, and good prof
Really enjoyed the class. Put the work into it and go to office hours and you should do quite well.
she is always angry, seems irritated. she is rude. she makes me hate engineering, and female engineers. I am a female student. She should be cool like karen gordon and michelle oliver.
She is an awful professor. She is very disrespectful and does not care about the students success. Her solutions for the assignments had so many errors. She has great knowledge but she is very unfriendly. She needs to be humble, understanding and be fair to students. Testing on what she teaches won't harm her but she doesn't care.
I will avoid taking any course with her.
Professor puts a lot of effort into trying to help students. Her teaching style did not seem suited to a University level.
Disorganised and terrible notes.
Very strong willed, if you put in the time to learn, she will do everything in her power to help. If you care, she will to.
I haven't yet finished the course I'm currently taking but it's clear to see that Julie Vale has no clue how to teach a course, despite having the needed knowledge. She isnt very approachable either and seems to have forgotten that we're in university to learn the course and not just know the course. 1/10, makes me not want to pursue engineering :(
You will learn more in 5 mins of Khan Academy on Youtube than an entire semester in her class. She is literally impossible to understand.
She's very nice and the lectures can be interesting. However, it's way harder than it needs to b. The course material is convoluted and the students are completely relying on outside resources. Assessments are also overly tough. Something as simple as going through basic examples during the lectures would make her a much better professor.
Ruining my life, one lecture at a time. She is hurtful to any and all students. She doesn't care about anyone, but herself. Doesn't teach properly. Disorganized notes that don't provide the fundamentals for the course. Tests in an overly complicated manner. Vale should not be a professor. She lacks the capacity to feel anything, but disdain. Awful.
Worst prof you could possibly have, doesnt know how to teach .. tests had nothing to do with what she did in class or assigned. Just do your self a favor and stay away from this craazy lady
Her material taught in class does not line up with the material taught in the textbooks. Her material taught in class does not line up with the exams she makes. Expects students to know the answers to her sample questions during her lecture so she does not finish the example fully.
She made an easy course harder than it should be. If you have a chance to choose don't ever choose her.
Being good at something does not mean you can teach it well too. You can see that she's smart but she does not know how to pass her knowledge. She makes everything harder. And she expects you to be in her level. For a first year prof, this is as bad as it gets.
WORST
She doesn't understand that most of her students in our first year course have no clue what she's talking about and are way too lost to even be able to put a question together to clarify. She's clearly quite knowledgeable but that clearly doesn't always cut it for profs as this course has been an example of.
Mom always said if you don't have anything good to say, then don't say it all. So I'm going to leave it at that. Best of luck if you ever have to cross paths with Julie Vale.
Little lecture organization (makes them as she goes). Doesn't post lecture notes. Instead posts audio recordings (try listening to a matrix!). Doesn't post solutions to practice tests. 90% weighting on midterm and final. Very difficult exams with mostly abstract questions. Not a good communicator. She's smart but that's not what makes a good prof.
Linear Algebra is not a hard course. But she somehow manages to explain things so poorly that simple concepts seem very daunting. Once I stopped going to class and just doing the homework w/ Khan Academy my understanding of the course content went through the roof.
If I would raise my hand to ask a question, she'd make eye contact with me, and then continue lecturing. You're expected to keep up with writing down what she is writing, understand that visual input, while simultaneously listening to what she's saying about what is being written down, and understand that audio input as well.
Not her! Never. She made be hate engineering and when I couldn't keep up, I thought I was doing and got depressed. It was my dream as a kid to study engineering
This is my second time being in Dr. Vales class, first was ENGG1500. From my second experience with her I can say she is the worst professor I have ever witnessed. Lectures are incredibly disorganized and very hard to follow. Tests are insanely hard compared to the content in lectures, assignments and practice tests. Get ready to be Vale'd.
I had Vale for 1500 and despised it. Not going to lie, I was truly under the impression her teaching style had improved at the start of this course. Notes were better, and she moved more slowly. And then she did the Vale classic. Tests are way too long for time given, she moves to quickly and gives little context, and doesnt explain concepts
Worse teacher that I ever had
Awesome professor. I didn't like her BACK IN Engg 1500 but now I realize that she wants the best from the student. Her exams tests your understanding and concepts clearly. Her office hours are great. However you do have to put a lot of your own hardwork.
The worst professor I have ever had the absolute displeasure of being forced to learn from. Words cannot describe how horrible she is at explaining concepts. Every class she teaches is made harder by her horrible instructional skills.
Professor Vale is a very smart and highly educated individual. However, that does not give her the ability to teach. She does not have the ability to communicate ideas to those less intelligent than her. She introduces very simple concepts in class, then expects you to compete extremely difficult test questions. Worst professor I have ever had.
Best of the best
Time vs marks. Try to answer as much as possible in the test so be quick. But never get overwhelmed by a tough lecture and get a lot of help from TAs as they know some smart tricks. Professor must not intimidate you. Better try to cover broad concept and writing related content down on exam copy than leaving blank for grades. Passing is possible.
I like her as a person, but I don't like how she teaches you her tips and tricks, instead of following a textbook. It makes it hard to find additional resources. If you don't follow the method she teaches, you will fail the class because you can't finish the tests in time. You don't learn systems, you learn Julie Vale.
Awful.
Terrible teacher
Julie Vale is pretty underrated. Sure she's definitely not great but she's not the worst either. She cares about the process of problem solving and teaches you to think. Her exams are very difficult but she gives lots of part marks just for thinking it out, literally write anything and be strategic with your time.
I experienced a severely stressful situation in this class. It is just like a military base instead of a place you can lean. She treated me so badly that I feel so depressed, stressful and hopeless that I feel I have no knowledge. Her teaching style is terrible for me. She answers questions just by questions that do not help at all.
I do believe She is the worst ever professor in the world! She is not supportive and I feel her behaviors were so offensive and harassing.
I've heard people hate on J. Vale in the past before, and I can see why sometimes because the course can feel quite heavy. But every office hour she clears up whatever is confusing you and is really helpful! Aside from the course being somewhat challenging, J Vale does not get the credit she deserves as she does care about the student.
its a hard a subject, she does not play around for sure. is she going to make your time into a living hell? only if you let her. Tests are extremely difficult only if you don't have a deep understanding of the subject, you rarely will see similar questions from the homework in the test. she is the best choice available.
This class was online for me this year which already made everything harder. This class is tough for an in-class setting let alone online. I feel like this prof made the course harder on purpose and justified it by allowing us to collaborate with others. Unfortunately collaborating with others who are just as lost as you are does not help at all.
Worst class I ever took in my uni life!!!!!
Does not prepare you for exams. Material doesn't seem too bad, but the tests will absolutely rail you. Seems nice at first
One of the hardest profs, but also incredibly fair, as someone who didn't pass her class twice, I have nothing but respect for her
She's not a bad prof, but she teaches a very tough course. She goes into lots of detail, and sometimes she'll lose a lot of the class along the way. Make sure you do the homework problems. She made the entire course out of 2 midterms and a final, so you NEED to do well on them. Go to class, her lectures are so full its not easy learning on your own
This class was pure pain and agony, if you get her, good luck.
Julie Vale is a very underrated Prof. She works extremely hard to give her students more than enough resources to be successful. She teaches challenging courses, but if you show up to your lectures and put in the time you will be fine. Testing is hard, but the marking is very fair. If you hate on Julie Vale you need to get over yourself :*
Just don't go to the lectures with vale. If you can, stick to the lectures with Cam farrow he's an absolute G. vale got all pissy at us because we were packing 2 minutes before class even tho some people have to run across campus for their next lecture. She also constantly brings up gender and race issues for no reason and its awkward.
Avoid at all costs if you can. Does not care at all about students. She encourages asking questions but completely berates you if she thinks it's a stupid question or has to repeat herself.
Very easy course. Skipped almost all lectures and homework. Winged tests and exams but still did ok.
Attend as many lectures as you can
her notes look like English was her second language, lectures are not good, can be rude when u get a question wrong. Hair cut be looking like Miles Morales which is kinda sick. Frequency response might as well be a guess when it comes to a test. What even is a complete response.
very confusing lectures, bad hand writing made an already hard course even harder. was often rude and disregarding to people in class and did not answer questions well. overall not a great professor.
Posted notes are useless as her hand writing is terrible. Lectures arent that bad but the online notes are impossible to follow.
Julie isn't bad, but I hope you don't skip many lectures when she is teaching because following her notes on Courselink is like reading a 4 year olds writing, absolute chicken scratches. That is the only thing she really needs to improve IMO. Maybe Cam can give her lessons on how to have legible writing.
Refuses to post past finals, barely any practice for exams. Notes are practically incomprehensible. Course is a joke. Hard to get a straight answer, information is always conflicting.
Does not relay the content to students well, material is flown through in class and then assignments are barely related to material taught in class. Course content is wildly theoretical and subjective, we are expected to see things the way the professors do without being taught how to. Final exam was outrageous, little relation to course content
Julie is a slightly misunderstood professor, I truly believe she is just super passionate about what she teaches and wants other people to learn, however, Julie is not the best at teaching a difficult course. She expects students to immediately understand, which makes lectures hard to follow. Very friendly if you approach her one on one though.
Underrated prof. Difficult course but its manageable if you just go to the lectures. She does a good job at explaining things. Thanks Julie!
cooked cooked cooked cooked cooked cooked cooked
worst prof here at guelph
New concepts introduced in the practice because lectures don't teach you how to solve problems. Many mistakes in answer key and extremely messy writing. Doesn't prepare people for tests. Waits for the 24 hours before the exam to kick in then replies to emails 4 days late. The course isn't impossible if you practice but it's very poorly taught.
she will make you want to quite and give up
Made me not want to check both ways when crossing a road.
Her handwriting is terrible and hard to read. The lecture notes are not helpful at all.
Good at explaining concepts. Could be a little condescending but did her best explaining the very abstract and ambiguous content of this course.
