I really enjoy his critical thinking class. the class is what is it, if you have logic and common sence then it should be really easy, but the material does require studying, and going to class. The textbook is great, its actually helpful, but you really need it to do well. Julien is funny and seems like a goofy uncle, not a funny prof. he's cool.
Easiest professor. Nice guy, helpful. You want a free 80+, take him.
Best Professor!! If you have to take a liberal, take this one.
Easy easy teacher, free 80%. A good liberal to take you actually learn something out of the course compared to most others. I slacked off and ended with a B+. The two essays he marks them super hard but the quizzes and final are easy.
He is a very nice person but often gets carried away during lectures and its hard to follow along. Midterms and exams were easy, his sample exams are good examples of what to expect. If you participate in class, he is great at getting you to think about your input by repositioning his question. Smart guy, nice guy, sometimes boring though!
Although the tests are fairly easy, his wording is sometimes confusing. The two major assignments were marked hard but the final exam was so extremely easy. Managed an A- in the course even though i got 60's on both assignments.
Nice guy! Interesting lectures!
Great prof and a really nice guy... I actually enjoyed going to class! He knows his stuff and he re-words things in a way that is completely understandable. He's pretty funny too. The class was super interesting, and bonus: no text! (just downloaded readings). Overall, awesome class. I'm happy I took it :)
Nice guy. Very hard marker. He tries to help you. Unfortunately the content he was forced to teach was very boring. He did try to make the class interesting.
Yes, very nice person. Genuinely cared about our success in this course. Very helpful, very fair with grades, tests and essays. I got exactly what I deserved on my final paper. Wish him all the best in his teaching endevours!
Greaaat prof...attend his classes though or else the material will be pretty hard to comprehend. His exams are not bad as long as you attend his classes specially his review class!
Oh my gosh! Super fun!
He is my fav! This course and his philosophy really inspired me to want to be better in my writing and critical thinking, which is helping me in my new writing course :) My critical analysis of articles and literature are wayyy better because of him, plus he has good teaching style. Look forward to other Philosophy classes!!
he is a nice guy, tries to make class engaged.somewhat funny he's tests are super hard especially if u don't attend to classes. he is easy on essay markings. other than that he's explanations are not easy to understand. he doesn't explain the article rather he states the same thing in difficult way to understand.
Great professor. As long as you attend the lectures and read the material, you should do well. He is willing to go over material as many times until you understand. He's patient, polite, and intelligent. What more could you want for a prof?
Hes an awsome guy but his lectures are extremly, and i mean extremly dry and boring. I think he really needs to rearrange his lectures so students get a better understanding of what is being taught. The readings were really difficult and his lectures did not give any clarity on what was being read. He is however very fair and understanding.
I agree, he's awesome but I disgree that his lectures are boring and dry. I think some readings and certain content is difficult to fully comprehend at first, but he has a way of trying to be so helpful and patient with us! I got an A- in my other course mostly becuz of his influence in the way I think now and his awesome teaching style!!
He is very nice and helpful. Granted that the online readings were dense and sometimes a bit boring, he went through them in detail, cut things out and did as much as he could to help you understand. He is also a very easy essay marker, just include what he asks from the article and make an opinion on it.
One great prof. He makes thinking worthwhile and his clarifications really help when writing essays. It's far easier now to give opinions on concepts that can be super hard to grasp. He's fair on the grade you get if you follow his essay instructions and keep asking for help when you get stuck! I wishhe could mark my essays from my other course!
The Professor is very friendly, intelligent, and polite. He cares that his students understand the material. He is willing to go over the content as much as you ask.The journals are extremely lengthy however the material discussed in class is engaging. The course introduces a different way to think.
I totally agree! He's the best for a Professor becuz he's so caring, friendly & super smart <3 he's so inspirational that he makes Philosophy more interesting than I ever imagined it would be and plus he keeps me curious and thinking and thinking and thinking!!!!
Amazing prof! makes you think, is funny, responds to emails quickly, doesn't put anything on the test you didn't cover, is easy and laidback! best prof i've had for phl courses
JB is my favorite prof *_* his lectures are interesting & I can't get enough of the new ways we were introduced to thinking. He has a gentle voice too! He makes awesome sample tests (when most profs don't) esp for exam! As busy as he is, he's open & friendly to help you whenever you need him. Just the best, & very hard to come by at ryerson!
Awesome professor! He teaches extremely well and is very helpful. Attending the course will help as he teaches the material he feels is important, but if you can't, the textbook is flawless, you can learn the entire course by yourself. 2 midterms, 2 essays and a final; sounds like alot but they are simple if you know the material.
I don't agree that the previous commentor should undermine this course & the professor. The book may be pretty straight forward, but not so much that "you can learn the entire course by yourself" at least, not without an instructor & esp since there are essays included as well. Overall, amaaazing prof :)
Great teacher, deserves all of the positive reviews. Loves philosophy and it shows in his teaching. Very easily understood, extremely fair marker and its a joy listening to his lectures. Highly recommended.
This guy is amazing, he uses material straight from the original form which might make it more difficult to get through but he makes sure to make the tests and essays lenient to make up for the difficulty in the material. He's extremely funny teaching in a relevant manner with the most random examples. Awesome dude.
*JB is among the BEST Philosophers there are at ryerson! He presents clear & concise course material without any bias, like some profs who can be so close minded in their discipline. Really, fair & gave me the chance to re-write my bad essay, & ended up doing alot better! DEF "red hot chilly pepper" worthy too!! haha He has great teaching techn's.
Great Prof! Fair, clear, pacient and compassionate. The very best of the best! I can't wait to tak another course with him!
Great professor! He will talk and talk about the articles read in class so you will be able to understand in many different ways. He also makes great notes for studying for exams and reviews everything that will be on it. No surprises on his exams. But, if you do not show up for class, you WILL miss important things. Loved him!
Amazing Prof. Very interesting material. Never bored in this class. No textbook. 1 short essay, 1 easy midterm, 1 long essay and easy final. Open to discussion, very approachable. Loved this class, would def take this class again. The class is based on about 10 readings and that is it, just discussion. Puts up helpful notes before an exam. Awesome!
A funny, interesting and approachable professor! Readings mostly covered the questions addressed in the course. He explains really well and just makes you think more. Having sample tests and notes for midterms and exams were super helpful! Easy, laid-back but caring and cool!
One of the best professors at Ryerson, known in and out of his subject. I took it as my Upper liberal without prior knowledge in the field. Very helpful, fair and never let you down even you are in deep trouble Philosophy field. Finally, made me learned the very fundamental foundation for law's Critical Thinking. Very grateful to this Prof.
Really funny prof. Sometimes his class feel really slow. I didn't use the textbook much. Not too difficult, just pay attention. 3 tests and an essay.
Interesting class. Course is not hard but some material are a little confusing.. but if you read the textbook and attend class you are golden. 3 Tests, 1 essay.
Julien's personal giggling and constant hypothetical situations gives reason as to why I think he's on something... and frankly, I want a little of whatever that is before the class. However, the class is pretty easy just read the textbook and just go to the class when you have a question about the text.
He is a great prof. Talks a lot, but all of it is important. Do not miss a class otherwise you will probably miss ALL the information. He tells you exactly what he wants from your assignments.
before taking this course think thrice not twice. that's all i can say. and goodluck if you think you will get a good mark to boost your gpa as a lower liberal course.
Awesome prof!
very hard marker, its supposedly easy for a lower liberal class.
Great prof (perhaps my favourite so far), presents the lecture material very eloquently and makes it very interesting, enough for you to think about the material when even outside of school/studying. Can get a great mark as long as you read the provided texts, keep interest, and go to all the lectures.
This is a tricky class, if you're not into PHL! The module content is very long, confusing and DRY, put me to sleep every week. No textbook, which is a plus (really the only plus). For Final - gave 7 essay topics, chooses 5 for exam, write 3. (So make 5 outlines and you can't lose!) Just scraped by with a 70%, was hoping for a lot better though.
If you write one small thing he doesn't agree with as an answer to the tests he will take marks off. Multiple choice is all trick questions. Tough marker. Interesting material though
he is a good teacher and the class was interesting but his tests are very hard and tricky
If you are skeptical about this class the first week and are considering leaving, don't! His class was difficult in some respects, such as little blackboard usage (no online powerpoint -had to write notes in class) and his fast talking, but, he is always ready to clarify and is approachable. Few assignments which are open ended and enjoyable.
Julien doesn't have any notes and almost never writes anything on the board, so you have to catch everything he's saying and you need to show up to class. Sometimes notes can get messy cause he loses his train of thought. Only one quiz, an essay, midterm and final, but he always gave the format. The mid-term felt like a quiz. He's an easy marker.
He is a very nice prof. very easy going and flexible. No ppt, you have to be ready with pen and paper. While talking he might jump from philosopher to philosopher but is always willing to go back and clarify. 2 exams and 1 essay, easy marker and willing to help. Genuinely cares about student success. DON'T SKIP CLASS, one lec. hell a lot of info!
Nowadays it's quite rare to find a prof who's not hiding behind hisher power points. But Beillard is an exception, he talks passionately about the subject until he covers and clarifies everything. He engages students and makes it interesting. The key to succeed in his class is to show up, stay focus, ask questions, and take NOTES. Great man
julien is interesting. pay attention, take notes, and youll do great. he is a bit scattered until he starts getting into his analysis, then get ready to write quickly. he is super smart.
Great prof. He will definitely make you think. Highly recommended!
Fair marker. There was a small amount of reading per week which wasn't mandatory as he would go over it extensively in class - you could probably pass without doing any of the reading but I wouldn't recommend doing so. He is a great lecturer, he makes the material very interesting (which is tough when referring to Kantian ethics) and is very funny
The course itself was incredibly boring but he tried to make the lectures a little bit more interesting by adding in his own examples. He talks A LOT and does not write ANY notes or uses any form of ppt, so be ready to have a pen and paper handy. I rarely attended any classes and passed with a really good mark just by studying the articles.
He tries to make the lectures fun. Makes jokes, really emphasizes important concepts on the reading, so take those notes down, BUT he definitely likes to challenge opinions, ALL opinions without really taking a stance. So it can get really confusing. The readings are not easy to follow and opinions shared, including his are highly controversial.
Dr. Beillard talks a lot during the class. A lot of it has to do with his fancy rather than the course material. My impression was that he was there to talk rather than teach. His readings consisted of modern philosophers that required little reflection to comprehend.
He is such a sweet and gentle man. He is very passionate about Philosophy and you can tell that he really loves to teach his students.
Solid professor, discussion posts every week, which are very easy. There are 2 quizzes, 3 papers, and a final. The papers are each very easy, just an opinion piece with no research and are very short: easy grades. The quizzes are a bit ridiculous, extremely specific and you still get bad marks while googling the answers! A bit scared for final.
Great guy, but a few issues: He contradicted the textbook (& himself) leading to unclear grading. Philosophy is complicated enough, intro stuff is best taught in a simple/structured way. Need more: clear foundational concepts & basics (eg, LOGIC). Less: wishy-washy debates, quibbling about norms/definitions (eg, relativism, genetic fallacy).
He talks A LOT. Not even about philosophy .. however, he marks easy. His tests aren't difficult. The readings can be lengthy though but they're all posted online (summer course). Do the readings and then try to take notes on what he talks about in class.
The best professor I've ever had. Makes philosophy interesting, and summarizes the readings for you in class in simple terms. Goes on tangents, but they're interesting. Super easy marker, you just need to think about the concepts on your own and make your own conclusions for essays.
I took the Knowledge, Truth and Belief course in January-April of 2012. Julien Beillard is a solid instructor, who gave select articles to read that engaged the students. There was no clunky expensive textbook to buy; so I appreciate that. Julien is a pleasant, humble, and approachable man.
Not a good professor. He contradicts himself and his arguments go in circles. He should definitely make lecture slides so he can stay on track with what he lectures.
Good Professor. Very knowledge in his field. Goes off on tangents. Did not attend class all the time, but when I did, it was quite helpful. Readings are required to be completed and will help with evaluations. Overall, I would have him as a professor again.
Prof Beillard unfortunately lets his personal opinion and beliefs overtake the philosophical theory being discussed. He often uses ad hominen attacks to prove his points, making class discussion uncomfortable. He will mark you poorly if he disagrees with you, and speaks condescendingly. Pretends he wants to hear your view, then directly attacks it
He constantly went on tangents, and barely had a clear train of thought. His lectures were all over the place and would contradict the textbook over and over again. It was extremely difficult to understand what he was talking about and very confusing. WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN. Check his marking on your tests, my class fought with him on a lot of tests.
I have got to admit, that I have learned a lot through him and this class which I can carry on beyond my education experience in Ryerson. He is a good teacher, makes funny jokes, gives clear examples to explain his points, responds quickly to emails and grades fairly. Overall, I had a very positive experience and will highly recommend.
He never uses lecture slides and often just rambles about the readings, going on semi-related tangents for three hours. Participation is worth 10% of your final mark, but he rarely, if ever offers the opportunity for students to have discussion about the material. Tough marker, extremely lecture heavy and the readings are incredibly dense.
This professor has wasted my precious time. He spends more time going off on tangents than he does teaching the material. Dont bother showing up to class. Says participation matters but interrupts the FEW people who participate. Doesnt let them talk. And talks very disrespectfully about Catholicism and other religions . THIS ISNT A RELIGION CLASS
Not for bus-stop philosophers. Prof engages the class critically on the material and very open to legitimate philosophical objections and queries, but leave your biases at the door. Lots of varied readings and discussion points, often tangential but always related the question at hand, however indirectly. Fun course for true philosophers.
A solid professor. The material is difficult but do the readings and listen in class and you will be fine. Lectures are heavy and it can be easy to zone out but try not to because you will be completely confused and lost when you zone back in. Tangents and no slides are pretty routine for philosophy courses and you learn to appreciate it.
love this guy.I also love how he references his rate my prof page in lecture. He gives some VERY strange examples!Truly is one of those crazy phl prof but its very enjoyable. I was dealing with some health issues well taking this class and he always made my day better. didnt participate given my health but would recomend the convos are facinatin
He's a great guy but truly a sucky professor. He's constantly off topic and never has any notes so you're frantically just trying to filter through course content and random information. Also, doesn't help that the course itself is extremely boring and dry. The exam is coming up and I still don't know what is happening in class.
Honestly I never expected to feel so offended in a class before. I almost always get when profs reference controversial topics in class to make a point/example, but this class was a whole new level. Started out kind of funny/edgy then it became offensive and took things way too far. BAD lectures. Never talks about readings/topics related to them.
This prof isn't for everybody but he is truly entertaining. I respect him for diving into such controversial topics without fear of how it may be recieved by all the students. Plus he gives thoughtful points to back up his example/opinion ect. He gives you a full page of feedback for your essay even if you got an A+ which is great. Tests are easy.
He should not be teaching period let alone teaching anything related to philosophy. He has a very vague grading criteria and marks your opinions instead of your writing. If your opinion differs from his you can for sure expect a barely passing grade. I only got a A cause he liked my opinion on the final exam even tho the writing style was the same.
Chill dude and the lectures are really interesting. Do not skip class!!
He is difficult to follow a lot of the time because he often goes off on tangents. But he gives good feedback for the essays due. It's also a lot of critical thinking. I think this class should be taken only if you are passionate about philosophy.
He goes off on frequent tangents and assigns frequent readings.
There is no way you can understand everything he mentions in class because he goes off tangents before completing his initial thought which leaves your notes incomplete. Ask him if you can record the lecture, if he says yes, do so because listening to it and playing it back helps a lot. Tests are easy but essays are marked hard. He is ok.
DO NOT take PHL333 (philosophy of human nature). ESPECIALLY if this man is your prof. SWITCH OUT IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. He is bad at lectures. Bad at explaining himself. Makes his students feel very unwelcome. Im not normally a skipper, but I skipped the entire second half of the semester. Waste of my time. Waste of my money.
I absolutely loved his class! It was online so the discussions and readings were done online, however the assignments were unique and I really enjoyed doing them. He really doesn't just give you the copy paste generic essay questions and gives topics that make you want to learn more about them. Really appreciated his detailed feedback on the essay
Those who gave Julien a low rating must be too incompetent to understand that they have yet to open their mind up to new ways of thinking about life. If you have a hard time following his lectures it's time to pull out some philosophy books and start educating yourself on life topics that really matter. He is a very intelligent & entertaining prof.
He's very passionate and engaging. He goes off tangent very often, but make sure to actually listen to the lectures. If you write your essay based on what he says in class, you'll get an easy A. The tested are really easy, but he grades essays really harsh if he doesn't agree with you. Just make sure to write essays based off his words.
Dr. Beilard is a funny prof that will get you interested in philosophy. Coming from a science major who is bad at essays, he marks pretty easy as long as you defend your point properly. You do have to read all the readings and show up to almost every class, but as long as you do that with a little extra effort, you'll have no problem getting an A.
Second time taking a course with him. Very lucky to have him as my philosophy professor. Thank you Ryerson and thank you Prof Beillard.
Professor Beillard does not give proper instructions on essays worth 20% of your grade, and expects you to write a 10 page essay off of an one sentence description in the course outline
Do not take an online course with this Professor. He doesnt give any instructions for essays, takes so long to answer emails, and gives no guidance. He even assigned an entire book to read over 2 modules in the middle of the semester without providing a link to purchase the book.
If you are looking for a GPA booster take this class with Julien. Weekly discussion posts were 20% of the grade and fairly straightforward material on tests and essays.
Julien is so real with his students and is truly a great guy. Loved this class!!
I hate philosophy but I loved this class so much because of him! He is so real, and helps you personally connect to the readings and the class. He is an honest, genuinely good person who wants you to succeed.
He is just awesome
Very nice guy. Is able to relate the readings to life and examples which help you understand the reading.
I always look forward to his lectures. You can tell he's really passionate about what he's teaching, and it makes his class so enjoyable. He's an amazing guy all around.
I had my course with Julien in the fall of 2020 - the first online semester due to COVID. He is a good guy, the course content was interesting, he's approachable and humble as others have mentioned, but his free-flowing format is hard to follow, he goes on long off-topic rambles and is a surprisingly hard grader despite his easy-going personality.
he's such a nice prof one of my faves. he marks a lil tough but if you pay attention you should be fine. overall, def recommend taking his class :)
best prof I has this semester. He is kind, funny, and always smiling in his lectures even though everyone's camera is off. If you do the readings you will get a good mark. He is the best! and if you need a class to bring up your average deff do a class with him he is the best prof I had so far
He is a real cinnamon roll. Super kind, caring, accommodating and makes you think! His tests are very easy if they are open book and you have the article handy. In terms of essays, he just wants to see that you understand the argument and have your own opinions and reasoning behind what you think.
Julien is a great orator, and I imagine under any other subject I wouldve absolutely loved this class, but this kind of philosophy just bores me to hell. Easy going, good marker, great to listen to, but the readings are absolutely mind numbing. Would love a class with him under a philosophy subject I enjoy
Julien is nice and seems very knowledgeable about what he's talking about. Goes off on tangents sometimes but takes time to answer questions or comments. Doesn't give feedback on assignments unless you ask for them. Relatively easy class but I found it hard to do well on assignments.
Hes nice but his class is so boring. Hes kind of fair at marking Id say but his essays are graded a lot heavier, his class is also pretty easy. He often strays from topic so its difficult to follow however hes an okay prof in general.
Great Professor, show up and listen to do well.
The sweetest prof, youll love him. He goes off on a lot of tangents but its always nice to hear his own personal opinion on the topics he teaches. He provides thorough explanations on the articles he assigns, and the assignments were never difficult, easy As if you pay attention to his notes and do your best to understand the readings.
The man is a legend, he treats students with respect and isn't afraid to delve into controversial topics and incite fruitful discussion.
Imagine a philosophy class where the essays are informal instead of lectures, you just discuss a reading (that isn't even mandatory). That's what it's like having this guy teach. For me the exam was worth 40%, which may seem intimidating but this prof is extremely caring and doesn't mark very hard.
eh, thats the most I can say. cool lectures, readings are light, its just a dense topic. def only take this class if you are passionate about philosophy. I took it as an elective so I wasn't to stressed about the grade. Oh and you're only graded on 2 papers, a quiz, and a final
SO NICE. bumped bad quiz marks up (mine 20 percent) if we did well on the 2 papers. He's very understanding of the stresses of online learning, laid back, and a lenient marker. Papers are informal, no research, and max 1500 words. I vowed in first year to never take another philosophy class because I sucked so bad -- I passed this class with an A
Professor Julien is great honestly, a good person cares about his students, never wants to make to intimidating BUT OH MY GOD HE TALKS A LOT, and he repeats things 100 times, and the lectures are boring, to be honest, and yeah take the course if you're passionate about the philosophy of the human nature, great prof but such boring lectures.
Hes a really nice person, sweet and cares about the subject. The lectures however were confusing at times, just him talking for the two hours straight - lack of visuals etc makes it hard to follow. If it werent for his good personality and kindness I think this class would be pretty hard.
truly a sweet character but has nothing posted on D2L except the recorded lecture (talks for 3 hrs) very dense and hard to grasp material unless u r 100% engaged 200% of the time. He seems laid back b/c he wont mind if you hand in essays a day late, but I keep getting 70 flat on my essays w/ him (im a 90's essay student), final exam essay is 40%
Lectures are heavy but recorded, easy marker, super caring and friendly, laidback about deadlines and assignment requirements. Easy pass
Honestly, great prof. Really understanding and caring for his students. Chill guy and good lectures. Had him for my first ever PHL uni course, and was a great first teacher who made me interested in philosophy.
At first: seemed very lenient, but I would work very hard on the essays and get a "low" mark (e.g., 70-80%). *However,* he was very lenient on the final exam. I would therefore recommend him, as he was fair in the end.
Dr. Beillard is one of the best. His lectures are thought provoking and moving. Only class I've cried in! I see the world differently after this course. He's understanding of life circumstances if they arise. The grades are based on papers and one short test. Participate in class, turn on your camera if online!
the course was online but lectures were all recorded so you can access at anytime - watch them and take notes! grading was based on two essays, a test and a take home exam (another essay) beillard was very accommodating, didn't take marks off for late work, and his lectures and readings made me interested in school during a tough time. 10/10
He is one of the best professors I had, I strongly recommend taking him if you are taking a PHL class, explains material very clearly, helps his students where they feel confused or stuck, cool guy. Makes philosophy ten times better. Personally, I respect him. Also, get ready to read and discuss a lot. (good discussions)
I really enjoyed my time in Professor Beillards class. Hes super funny and laid back, doesnt have strict rules regarding assignment formatting or deadlines, and overall truly cares about his students. He explains all materials clearly and you also dont need to buy a textbook because he provides all of the reading material himself.
Julien Beillard is a good professor. He is very accommodating and extremely laid back on due dates. His course, on the other hand, is primarily made up of his personal opinions on written papers with little to no organization. If philosophy isn't your strong suit, I recommend switching courses or enrolling with a different professor.
Never seen so many hands go up in a classroom before when a Prof asks a question. He makes students comfortable speaking about abstract topics that he is clearly philosophically developed on. His essay instructions are so simple. Don't forget that this is a PHIL course and not ENG! Don't be stunned when you have to argue and provide reasoning lol.
Very, cool prof. The course work is very light and lectures are conversations about short readings. Unfortunately, the topics touched upon in this course were SUPER basic and boring. Youtube, Reddit, and books are better ways to learn PHL imo. If you want an easy course and a good grade this is probably one to take. BUT TOO BORING IF YOU LIKE PHL.
I would say he is a great prof if you are really into philosophy, but to those that are not fully into philosophy, I would suggest you turn away. Classes are light but you will need to put all your energy into those few assignments. Also, the feedbacks you will get are overall not very helpful to how you can improve on future assignments.
Julien is a kind instructor, but is extremely unorganized. He would cancel lectures the day of with very little notice. However, he is very flexible with extensions, word count, late assignments, etc. He was also great with ensuring everyone was comfortable with speaking in class. But, he was very unorganized in my opinion and a lot of reading.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He was probably by far the worst professor I have encountered thus far. He grades really tough and gives the same generic feedback on almost all your papers, despite making the necessary changes. I could have had a perfect 4.33 GPA this term, but he made it impossible.
He was severely disorganized, sometimes cancelling class an hour before. He provided NO rubrics/instructions on any assignments and was disappointed when the class didn't meet his expectations. He didn't provide any feedback either. If he did, it was generic; word-for-word feedback for everyone. He is definitely the worst professor I've had.
The worst professor I've ever had in my 22 years of life. Only one thing was posted on his D2L since the beginning of the course, and that was the course outline. WE DIDN'T EVEN RECEIVE AN OUTLINE FOR THE EXAM! Any info about the exam was discussed in class (ATTENDANCE WAS NOT MANDATORY). Sets students up for failure and does not provide feedback
Literally the easiest class ever. Attendance not mandatory (I showed up to class like 3 times). No late marks (I handed in almost every assignment more than a week late) and very easy grader. Assignments were also very easy (500-1000 word essays on easy topics) He honestly just wants to have a good conversation with students about philosophy.
I thought that the teacher would be good cause of the previous ratings but he was horrible, he marked really really hard on the essays. He is chill and nice but when it comes to content, just not it. Would not recommend at all for a liberal, not a bird course by any means.
One of the poorer profs I've had at Ryerson. Don't know if he's having a bad year but DONT takes this class if u don't need to. not worth wasting an elective/ upper liberal. Content is eh, weird how he could make an interesting course so mid. The content breakdown is also laughable. 15% discussion, 15% case study, 35 % paper and 35% final paper.
It really doesn't matter how hard you worked. He may be a cool professor, but his grading is kind of harsh. A bit too sarcastic in emails.
Professor Beillard is an extremely biased one, and his course topics are not only extensive to read, but the topics are extremely controversial, and if you do not see eye to eye with his opinions, do not expect a good grade. There was little to no feedback on any assignments. He luckily at least provides extensions if you need them.
Professor Beillard teaches a controversial class but does it well. He always challenges your perspective to allow you to grow and grades fairly. He only gives feedback upon request, but said feedback is very helpful. Looking at the bad reviews, note that over 70% of the class did not show up nor try and are mad now that marks are out.
Hard to navigate because there are no real clear instructions for the assignments. All exam and essay info was posted as an announcement. I found that the essays were hard to do good on because he didn't want us to use any points discussed in class, but the classes were about highlighting the problems, so the lectures were useless? Idk how I passed
Essays were short and he's a very understanding prof. I recommend this prof to anyone taking this class. The course readings however contain massive amounts of degeneracy which make you pause and think what in the world am I reading, who comes up with this nonsense? Anyways, put in the effort, do the assignments, and you'll get a good grade.
He's okay. Friendly and can be interesting. Course load is light and he is very relaxed with extensions and late work. However, he seems to mark almost entirely on personal opinion, gives little feedback and his lectures are borderline useless(though can be fun if you participate!) unless you were completely unable to understand the readings.
He's a nice guy! In terms of grading, I honestly found it difficult to do super well in this course as I didn't really understand his marking scheme and got 70s on all papers. But I didn't try super hard. He's chill, but don't expect an easy A+ because the papers can get a bit difficult. Nothing crazy though, just try your best! He's a sweetheart.
Professor Beillard is very reasonable. Course was easy and interesting. 3 essays one small quiz. Not that hard just do the readings and pay attention. You don't need to show up, but if you do, DON'T go on your phone. He is super nice and cool but the only thing you can't do is go on your phone as he finds it rude and will get upset (fair enough).
Strange course and strange guy, thats the only way to describe this experience. I can't hate him, there was just something off about the way he interacted with students and his marking scheme but I guess to each their own? Also could've been such an interesting class but was somehow made so mediocre - wouldn't take him again unfortunately.
He is pretty weird, but not in a bad way. Go to the first lecture for each reading, but after that, he kind of just repeats himself. He is really kind and available if you need help but sometimes drones on in his lectures. The 1-hour lecture is absolutely pointless, don't go, but if you go to the rest and work hard on the papers you'll be fine.
Lectures are engaging but bizarre, he went off for an hour about race and IQ one time (only tangentially related). He's a generous grader but it seems sort of arbitrary, my laziest paper got a 90 and a better paper only got 80 despite it also being a final exam. Doesn't care about research/format, so very low effort class
Beillard is a great professor and is capable of taking abstract concepts and explaining them from various angles. Your grade is dependent on your understanding of the assigned articles which form the basis of the lectures and assessments. Basically, either listen in class or read the papers on your own. Both strategies yield a decent grade
Amazing professor, is very passionate in what he teaches. Lectures are always very interesting, and looks to create class discussion. Sometimes lectures can be a bit redundant but he tries to hit important points of the readings down. Always open to chat about readings and related topics, and is a lenient marker. Overall, great professor.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!! Breakdown: case study (15%), paper (35%), exam (35%), discussion posts (15%) - Doesn't give any rubrics - just brief instructions in course announcements - Weekly modules contain little to no content - he expects you to do 4-5 readings per week - Regretted choosing this as my upper liberal EVERY DAY of the sem
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I have never regretted a prof more. We haven't been able to find the readings, and he hasn't responded to us yet. MIND YOU, WE ASKED HIM 7 DAYS AGO. Everything is so vague, with no rubric whatsoever.
Dr. Julien Beillard is a lenient marker and makes the class enjoyable. His dedication to his students' learning and growth is truly remarkable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an inspiring educator. He cares about his students a lot. I always enjoyed taking his classes.
exams/quizzes are easy, take notes on the readings/lectures + make sure you understand HIS interpretation of the readings (not ur own).. he has strong opinions + his marking/views show it extensively. marks based on HIS views regarding heavy topics makes it hard 2 do well if u dont agree w his views. disappointed bc im passionate about philosophy
Lectures are interesting and facilitate discussion. Quizzes are easy; you're good to go if you attend the lectures or have a good understanding of the readings. For the final and essay, it is a bit harder because there is no rubric or clear grading criteria, just some guidelines, but a good mark is not hard to obtain.
Professor Beillard is extraordinarily biased, so much so that it makes this class an emotionally taxing one. He does not teach philosophy - he teaches his own views on life. His views are extremely controversial and can be very offensive. If you have a difference of opinion you will probably not do well on assignments, as he grades with his biases.
Decent grader but GOD is he insufferable. He's like a 22 year old pretentious contrarian philosophy major stuck in a 45 yr olds professors body
If you get his class, please just swap it or drop it... avoid it at all costs. If you wanna ace his class: take notes on all of his beliefs and just use that in your paper, cause he definitely won't agree with whatever your interpretation of the text is and will grade it accordingly. Warning, he is a professional yapper...
His class was interestingly based on the articles he chose, but he gets sidetracked with his personal opinion on these topics which makes it quite confusing to understand what the main point is. Not very easy to keep on track with what he discusses due to the lack of clarity. Other that that he's a fair marker.
Assalamu Alaikum this professor was one of the worst professors I have had not gonna lie. Decent guy tho but to bad he wasn't decent at teaching. His PHL333 class is biased. If you came here with your own philosophy scrap it he wont agree with it unless it agrees with his own philosophy.I guess if you wanna do well just write down everything he says
Prof.Beillard does not teach philosophy. Do not take this class expecting any actual learning of concepts. He uses his platform simply to spew his own religious rhetoric. He purportedly used offensive remarks under the guise of "hypotheticals," making racially insensitive and bigoted statements. Google his podcast to hear his other personal views.
He is genuinely the most fowl teacher I have ever had in my entire career as a student. Very condescending when answering questions. Extremely vague in his instructions for assignments and tests. Biased marker. You will get a bad mark if your work includes any thoughts or opinions that goes against his own.
Dr. Beillard is an excellent professor who gives honest feedback while marking that will actually help you learn the concepts. His assignments are open ended and give you freedom to write. His class is one of the best upper level liberals you can take.
I stopped being passionate about philosophy after taking his class. He rambles on about material unrelated to the course so I stopped showing up to class and still got a decent mark. There are no slides or any solid syllabus and you are expected to do the readings before class.
he presented his lecures through readings he created himself. So never have to attend online or anything. I only skimmed his lecture notes and did weekly discussion posts. there was 1 case study and the midterm and exams were just essays. it is a very interesting course considering I am a nerd who games and had no initial interest in the course.
Worst professor I have ever encountered during my first year here. He rambles on and on during class, is very disrespectful, condescending and rude to students. Tough grader, never gave anything above an 80 between me and my friends. Avoid his at all costs!!! Drop, swap, do whatever you need to avoid him, he's not worth your money nor your time!!!!
"broke at the mall"? srsly how did he even become a prof with that digital footprint. I had him last sem, worst teacher I've had in a long time, ended up dropping his class. I was on the brink of giving up on phl courses. Thank god I didn't. 1 class with thomas hart and suddenly I like phl again. if u have him this sem, swap/drop b4 it's too late!!
Had to drop immediately because of the lack of respect he gives to the individuals he teaches. His disrespectful nature caused many in the class to contemplate whether this was even going to be a real learning experience. I highly recommend dropping and swapping before getting too involved.
When I take an online course I want to be provided with meaningful lecture notes by the prof, not a couple a paragraphs. I don't take course just to be told to read a textbook, if I wanted to read textbook I would've bough textbook. EVERYONE SHOULD AVOID HIM Idk about grading, assignments etc. but it seems reasonable.
I love him, i've taken his class 3 times, id highly recommend. Lectures about really cool philosophical ideas and makes it a group chat/debate. Very simple, doesn't want crazy MLA format papers and jargon, just wants your honest thoughts. I'd call him very very chill. He grades a bit tough but you'll never fail. If you want an easy class take his!
If your essays contain ideas different from his, you will get a bad grade! His quizzes are easy come to class, and you will do well on them! He posts detailed notes from lectures which is helpful! The one thing is it's hard to pay attention as he rambles on about readings for 2 hours at a time with no break he's a nice guy but I wouldn't take again
i really enjoyed his lectures i thought they were very entertaining. make sure to take plenty of notes as they will be helpful later for exams, etc. he asks for basic respect in the classroom from students (don't be on your phone, etc) which i think is completely valid. many people were very rude to him which made me upset. basic decency folks!
he always replied to my emails and was pretty nice, even gave me a one day extension for the case study assignment. that said, hes an extremely tough marker. he gives feedback but he's just nitpicky about the most random things. i feel like he just doesn't like giving out 90s. also you don't really need to do all the readings if ur strategic abt it
I really liked Professor B. I'm taking him again next semester. People complained about him a lot, but as long as you show up, participate in discussions, understand the material and make sure you're respectful (don't go on your phone or sleep in class, or leave early), you'll do well!! :)
Professor B is very smart and gives great feedback. Is a tough grader and can ramble a bit, but overall very good.
I took Professor Beillard's class in the Winter 2024 semester. He is such a great lecturer and you will learn so much. He is such a nice guy, (just no phones, leaving early, or sleeping in class.) It's worth it to pay attention!! Fair grader and overall a great professor.
I love JB. I'm a science student minoring in philosophy and Ive taken many of his classes bc I love his style. No textbook, just assigned readings which he discusses in class. Class is important though, otherwise youll miss key things that will be useful for future assignments. Caring and laid back. Really teaches philosophy in its truest form.
Challenging but rewarding class. Professor B provides great feedback and open-ended assignments. Attendance is mandatory, but worth it. For study prep, I found Unstuckstudy and the course textbook very helpful.
I dropped out of his class of PHL 333 due to me not risking the chance of failing because of his harsh marking more specifically his essays. I was willing to spend excessive amounts of studying to get my mark which was possible as 70 percent of the course was still yet to be marked but thing is he's a very harsh grader so i didn't take that chance.
His teaching is biased & hard to follow. I often find myself almost falling asleep. He actively stops the class to have passive aggressive rants calling you out if you do anything other than show him attention. He said my citation made no sense because I used MLA instead of APA (he didn't give ANY guidelines). Lowk killed my love of PHL.
No textbook, he just posts readings. Even with those, you have a good amount of time to complete. I find the lectures to be very paced which I love. He will talk about the readings for about a class or two and makes sure everyone is on the same page. his essay grading is critical but extremely helpful imo
He's a pretty tough grader. I've taken most PHL courses at TMU and I've never done worse in a class. My final year courses with "tougher" profs are easier on grading. Also not afraid to call people out for zoning out mid-lecture in a room of 100 people, which I've never experienced. His bandcamp is rly funny though if you google him, very strange
Has the worst attitude ever. I could not imagine having him again he was so mean, had no personality, readings are so boring, and would call out students in front of the class to embarrass them. I pray I never see or have him again.
This prof is very grouchy and gets upset over the littlest things. Had no problem picking on students and calling them out in from of the whole class if they weren't paying attention or left early. Lectures were mostly just him rambling and begging people to share their opinions on readings that basically no one did because they were so boring
All of the lectures are just rambling sessions. The articles he assigns for reading are in themselves interesting, but his lessons have no structure and he just rants about his opinions. The workload is easy though, and maybe if you're interested enough in what he says you'll enjoy it
the prof has no structure to lectures, is a hard grader, and rambles about irrelevant stuff. his classes made no sense. most people stopped showing up by week 4
He seems v knowledgeable & passionate but there was defo a lack of structure. He does go on tangents & it can be hard to stay focused. If you want to pass, attend lectures specifically for the reading you want to write about. Final exam is an in person essay, closed book but you do get the question ahead of time. Unfortunately, insufferable class.
Very rude professor
Philosophy courses are about thinking, arguments and debates. Students that are not willing to think and participate, well, perhaps Philosophy is not for them. There are other possibilities. One of them is students are not as smart as ten years ago.
Julien's teaching style was very natural. It was similar to having a conversation with a person you had known for quite some time. Being an online class, participation matters, as it is heavily weighted in the final grade. I am a shy person, but speaking to him felt like I could learn new things by being so open to conversations and discussions.
You do 1 reading each week and then class involves discussing it. Lectures didn't have a structure, no slides, he just went through the reading and the class discusses (participation matters). Essay criteria was also vague but he's not a hard marker, he doesn't care if you're right he just wants you to back your claims up. Very interesting prof!
One time on my way to class, I saw a man jump in front of the subway. I was jealous of that man, because I still had to go to class with Julien Belliard.
Pros: It doesn't matter if you show up, in fact he tells you this multiple times throughout the course You can use this class as a meter stick for how bad a teacher can be. Because the professor doesn't want to be there, you can get a really good grade Cons: You won't learn anything aside from his personal bias He is quite condescending. ∴ Avoid
This professor will show up for those who show genuine interest in understanding the course content. He is entertaining and takes care to be clear when communicating complex concepts. 10/10, would recommend to those who are willing to put in some effort.
Yes, he will get on you if your on your phone or laughing as that is offensive but his assignments are easy, quizzes are short (not over 15 minutes), For me though, as a person who finds it hard to concentrate, I do tend to find it difficult to pay attention to the long constant talking lectures. But he is nice and he smiles a lot.
Cancelled classes on short notice several times. His lectures are constantly off topic, and barely teaches anything. Also he rarely will post a reading, you need to go and search for it yourself. Multiple times during lectures he will call out students for talking and being on their phones. Overall would not recommend anyone to take his courses.
He is very strict about no phones or distractions, will snap at you. He regularly reminds everyone that you dont need to be there and you can learn the material in your own time.
The reviews are a bit harsh, but they aren't wrong. While I enjoyed the topics covered, Professor Beillard can definitely be difficult. He will call out distracted students and tends to go on a tirade about it. The lectures can be a bit dry, but as long as you skim the readings you will be okay. He isn't a horrible professor, just eccentric.
He is mid at best. Julien has no shame calling you out for small things other professors do not care about in the class room. Does not give constructive feedback when grading assignments. Also, not caring at all. You can tell he dose not really want to be there conducting a lecture. I would avoid a class with him if I were you.
avoid this prof. on multiple occasions he cancelled 5 minutes before class started. as well, dr. beillard was quite condescending and lacked reasonability when responding to student questions. he seemed unwilling to acknowledge different perspectives and talked down upon students who disgareed with him. tests are easy and his marking is average.
His lectures lack structure. Each week he assigns a reading that becomes the focus and often tends to be biased, the lectures are extremely dry, and he calls out people for using phones or sleeping and he doesn't give anyone high marks. You learn nothing important in this course.
No structure in his lectures, and he goes on unrelated tangents, which makes it difficult to take notes. He picks on students when they're on their phones, dozing off, etc. He's a relatively easy grader if your opinion aligns with his (to get a good mark, use an opinion he agrees with, even if you don't), and pop quizzes are mostly from lectures.
Honestly did not enjoy this class too much, but the fact he is not a super tough grader made up for it. He does tend to go on long tangents like others mentioned and fails to get his point across often but if you just read and take notes on the article you'll be fine. The exam also was easy, you just picked one article out of three to study for.
