hard grader, and demanding on her essays. The class is really interesting tho, and I think she does a really good job of explaining things. But be prepare to read a lot, because she has crazy reading assignments.
The lady is awesome! I loved her style of teaching and all her sarcasm! Take her if you can! Be prepared to read a lot ... oh and she's a lil' tough on the grading of essays ... she demands a lot! Nonetheless, great professor! More like her are needed!
Did not like her at all.
LECTURES ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND HER SARCASM MAKES THEM INTERESTING. IF YOU MEET UP WITH HER DURING HER OFFICE HOURS AND HAVE A CHAT, YOU CAN QUICKLY BECOME HER FAVORITE
she's the greatest..almost convinced me to change my history interest from the american revolutionary war to latin american studies...she's really smart and even more helpful. Her essays could be a little easier but other than that she's awesome.

great teacher...one of the best we have here @ UCR. If u have the opportunity to take her, do it, you will not regret it.....
you must make sure you read the text book since her midterm and final are all based on the reading and a few detils she includes in lecture. make sure you take notes and read, read, read!!!!shes very helpful, but can speak fast at times.you'll be fine if you read, but put a lot of detail when writing the final and midterm.she expects a lot of you,

Class was interesting but she talked to fast. Midterms were given before hand but were very hard graders. Class was fun but really hard graders.
She talks way too fast, which makes her mumbles sometimes. Her midterm is extremely hard even though she gives out midterm questions one week before the test. You have to read textbook at least 3 times if you want to get good grade in her class. If ur not interested in history, dont ever take her, i kinda regret that i took her class.
Prof. Levy was great, she does talk a little fast at times, but all of her notes are posted online and doesn't seem to mind people asking questions during lectures. She can be critical with grading, but all of her notes on essays and exams make perfect sense.
I you really want to avoid getting a bad grade, don't take her!!! She is a really hard grader and expects a lot from you! Her lectures are really boring and she talks really fast! The midterms have nothing to do with the lectures!
The class is not an easy one. She is a very hard grader and the midterm and final have nothing to do with the lectures. She gives you an option on what you want to do for the final but all three options are the same as she grades hard. Part of your grade is participating in the online discussions.
Great professor! Just do the work and you'll do well. Interesting lectures that can be a little hard to follow but is always willing to answer questions. Encourages students to interpret readings and primary sources from their own perspectives. A lot of online work required. Passionate instructor, puts in a lot of time making sure students get it
I did not attend class regularly and still got a decent grade. She podcast her lectures. Asks you to read a lot of articles but honestly you can get by without reading them. Midterm is only 4 questions what you must only pick 2 from. She gives you these questions beforehand. Final is an option, I did a video and received an A. Take her class!
She is my least favorite teacher. Not only did she make History99W my hardest class ever she was very unorganized. She is rude to students and very annoying. Quizes are random and based on attendance. BEWARE!!!! Less than half of my class was going to lecture by the end.
This class is a lot of work (and more than I thought was necessary) but not difficult. As long as you understand what she expects of you and do it, you'll do well. A lot of work but the nice thing is that there are a lot of opportunities to earn points to sort of buffer the points you didn't earn by missing some assignments.
This class demands a lot of work. You have a writing assignment that is due every week, weekly quizzes on the readings. If you put in the effort and do the work this class is doable. Really enjoyed this class.
AWESOME TEACHER!!! she demands a TON of work, she has at least 2 things due each week. but her and her TAs are very helpful, always ready to respond via email or twitter/Facebook (that's right). If you have to take a W class, take her's.
She was a good professor, but was very vague with her description of assignments. Especially the final project, she said you can use whatever topic you want, but then when it came down to it she regulated what topic we could write about. She rambles on and on, at first it was interesting but over the quarter it became annoying.
Professor Levy is amazing. There was a lot of writing, but there are writing workshops. She took a unique spin to teaching researching skills and it made it fun and interesting. The final project for the class was fun to work on and she or the T.A.'s were always available to give feedback or answer questions. She really wants students to do well.
Opportunity for a full letter grade bump. She was kind, and an easy grader, and the TA's were very helpful. There was a lot of participation required, and 3 assignments a week, which as overwhelming at first. But once I got into the rhythm of the class, it really was quite easy. Project at the end was enjoyable and unique, and not that hard.
I came out of the class unclear of if I had actually learned anything. The class makes it seem like you will learn research skills, and writing skills equal to a historian's. All I learned was that Chicago citing style is a pain. Her essay prompts are confusing, and when answering questions, either leaves one word answers, or a cryptic paragraph.
I took this class because I wouldn't have to take 1C and it's required by my major, but I think this would be easier than 1C. The entire theme of the class was about zombies and it made the class interesting and fun. The essays are different and innovative. If you can take this class I would recommend it. However this is my major so I am bias a bit
Just because this is an online class doesn't mean it's easy. She assigns so much reading, it's ridiculous. She will assign at LEAST 3 full chapters to read each week, quiz you on them, and expect you to do a writing assignment on something that was remotely related to the textbook reading. Her lectures are SUPER short and not helpful at all either.
You will have to write a lot for this class. Be prepared for peer reviews, DZ missions (they take a long time), and lecture comments in addition to attending discussion sections weekly and WAC workshops. On days with both discussion section is a good two hours.
Professor Levy's podcasts can be a bit boring but overall, Hist020 consists of a quiz, podcast review, and a paper due every Sunday so it's very consistent so you know what to expect. It wasn't a difficult class, she did give clear grading criteria so there aren't many surprises. Extra Credit is offered throughout the course.
she makes you work for your grade. there is a lot of reading but I found a way around it. there are weekly quizzes and essay (short/long) assignments. if you really try, you will get an A. participation is a MUST. she also gives you tons of chances for extra credit. Carolyn is also one of the nicest TA's, she cares so much. overall, fun and easy.
Class is super easy. Do your work, try on essays, get an A. Work load is not that bad for a class only 3 weeks long. Lazy people will say the class is difficult but if you answer the prompts for the essay and have all the requirements you'll get an A.
I really liked this professor, she used her grandmother information and life to explain the history of the 20th century. YOU NEED TO DO THE WORK ONLY TO PASS BUT TO GET AN A YOU NEED TO WORK FOR IT. She offer lots of EXTRA CREDIT.
At first I was skeptical about taking an online class because they can be confusing. However, I was wrong this class turned out to be pretty easy and only took minimal time away from core classes. The final is a typed paper about 2-3 pages. Overall, Professor Levy is a great professor and made history interesting. Great Breadth class for CNAS
At first, I was nervous about taking this course but in the end, I enjoyed taking this class. She gives great feedback and also allows you to improve your grade by providing extra credit opportunities. Her TA's are awesome as well.
Definitely more work than a regular class. Weekly decade assignments due every Sunday by 11pm. These took the most time but as long as you follow the rubric, youll get 100% on each one. Weekly quizzes with 3 attempts each & weekly podcast comments. Discussion was just the TA talking about the upcoming decade assignment & small group discussions
Levy is awesome! She really cares about her students and will do whatever it takes to see them succeed. I took her class online so it was different than a normal class, but through her podcast lectures I feel as though I learned as much, if not more, than I would have in person. I highly recommend taking her class!
This class is the most straightforward class ever. Most of the assignments literally just require you to follow directions and you'll get an A. Prof. Levy is incredible, she realizes online classes are different and changes the class as we go to tend student requests/needs. Always available and super interesting podcasts! Just follow directions!!!!
weekly quizzes, podcast comments, and decade assignment(mini essays) due. She gives you freedom to choose what you want to write about for your decade assignments. The podcasts were short & enjoyable and made the online class more personal. Do the extra credit assignments, they help out A LOT. You won't regret taking this class.
Took her online class, and it was the second one I've taken. A lot of reading is to be done an lots of "mini essays" as well. I felt the readings were a bit excessive at times but nonetheless an okay class.
For a humanities course, I would say this class is a lot more difficult than I thought. She expects so much from you and assigns 3 FULL chapters in the textbook for you to read (weekly), which is insane. Gives weekly quizzes and some questions are pretty tricky. Her lecture videos are super short and useless. Don't recommend this course.
Her online class was very enjoyable due to the structure of the class. It was organized into decades which made it easy to focus on what to write about. Extra credit was easy and helps a lot. On Piazza, she does have snarky replies but other than that the TAs are very helpful and you dont interact with Levy much unless you choose to.
There is no textbook, lecture, or final. She has 10 podcast app 20 mins each that you can listen to any time in the week. There are 2 real assignments due a week, Podcast comments and weekly decade assignment. She offers a full letter grade of extra credit 10%. Really easy class to get an A in that only requires maybe an hour of work a week.
Professor Levy was able to teach history and make it relevant enough to engage college students who might have been that interested beforehand. She makes the content of the course as well as the assignments applicable to us individually. She is very accommodating to our needs and understands how to engage us in the class. Her podcasts are great too
Tons and tons of useless assignments
I took her online Hist99W class and its basically weekly small essays that increase in length and research time. Lectures were asynchronous and discussion was synchronous with the TA. Very understanding and accommodating to students, especially because of the pandemic. Lots of extra credit opportunities and is just over all a really nice professor
World History class. Grade is a few research assignments, weekly responses to the notes, and the final paper. She's a nice grader. Ton of EC, your grade goes up a full letter if you do all of it. Lectures are podcasts you listen to on your own time. Discussion is the only thing you have to show up to, assigned reading is graphic novels.
Professor Levy was really amazing this quarter. Her class really easy, we only had to attend discussions, weekly assignments, and listen to her podcast and leave comments. Her podcasts were actually really interesting to listen to!
a great professor, she's really understanding and her class is as interesting as it gets for an intro history course. if you have the chance to take her course, I recommend it.
I would not recommend this professor because the way the grading system is set up, if you miss 1 assignment, its worth so many points that you can't even get an A. Otherwise it would be an easy A. Things were graded as 100% 50% 0%. Getting 50 on one big assignment takes a solid 5% off your grade, getting a 0 takes off 10% FROM YOUR FINAL GRADE.
Took this class online and unfortunately did not learn much. There are no notes and about 30 minutes worth of podcasts a week that just brush over topics. The final project which was an essay was graded so you could only receive a 0%, 50%, or 100%. If you missed a little part of the prompt you would get a 50% which dropped my grade from an A to B-
Professor Levy has officially made history way more interesting to learn. In her podcasts she makes sure to provide a well-rounded view of history in a way that allows you to draw connections - this makes the course work much easier. Just make sure to stay on top of the assignments and everything will go smoothly.
I absolutely loved taking Professor Levy's class. She's very inspirational and her weekly podcasts are so enjoyable to listen to. The workload isn't too stressful but gets your brain thinking for assignments. I love how History 20 became a class more about the quality of knowledge rather than the quantity of assignments. How every class should be.
Professor Levy is a super chill professor who was very considerate of different learning styles as well as the current situation with covid. The lectures are relatively short podcasts and you don't have to take notes. There are a few larger assignments but if you have a good TA then they aren't graded too harshly. Definitely recommend.
Never had a lazier professor, absolutely can feel how little she cares. Her grading is terrible either a 0,50, or 100% no in between cause that would require more effort to grade. She does recycled podcasts from last quarters. Got a 0% on the final cause it was "offtopic" she literally read my rough draft and green-lit it.
Very good class. Being a workshop class I expected it to be bland but Professor Levy really made it interesting with a zombie theme for researching history. Weekly assignments.
Levy is a relaxed professor. Her lectures are podcasts that you can listen to on your own time. The projects are time-consuming, but nothing difficult. There are readings assigned every week, but I did not read them and was completely fine.
Professor Levy is a great professor and gives very informative and engaging lectures. She does a great job of explaining how historical topics tie into today's events. However, her class is a lot of work. A lot of research papers and readings and it can be tough to keep up if you have a full course load.
There are lecture comments every week along with EC quizzes, an essay every two weeks, and discussion is mandatory. The lectures were structured as podcasts which were nice, but the essays were a killer. You have to do a lot of research, but thankfully there is a week grace period so you can turn it in late and still get credit. The prof. was nice.
Pros: Lectures are pre-recorded podcasts (not long/interesting/enjoyable). Hw is basically replying/commenting about them. Discussionreview/attendance. EC assignmentseasy. Cons: Research papers (2-3 total) can have vague instructions (4pg/not too bad). Graphic novel readings assigned sometimes (tip:save time-look up summaries). Finalpaper
Professor is super kind and very understanding. Genuinely cares about students. Willing to adjust anything for students benefit and is super accessible! Lectures were done thru podcasts and are very engaging and interesting. Assignments are also interesting and extra credit as well as buffers in due dates make things so much better.
Great professor, weekly lectures are pre-recorded podcasts that you can listen to at any time. The weekly homework is just writing a commentary on the podcasts. Lots of EC, so can definitely bring up your grade a lot. Flexible with deadlines. Overall passionate professor who finds joy in her work and is a pleasure to learn from.
Professor Levy is genuinely a great teacher and tries to make you view history in a completely different light. Some of the reviews here are outdated in regards to how papers are graded (previously 0,50, or 100%), as when I was taking it, each paper was graded out of a 5 column/row rubric.
Great professor, understanding and would take another class with. 10/10
Levy is an awesome professor. Even though you have to read and write a lot, there's so many extra credit opportunities so it's honestly not hard to get an A, but you have to work for it. The class was entirely online with the only attendance being taken is on discussion, and there's no lectures (you listen to podcasts instead).
Professor Levy slays. I loved this class so much. Yes, there's a lot of reading and 3 essays and 1 final paper but they are really easy to write to. I would 100% take one of her classes again.
Dr. Levy will probably be a good option if you don't like history. If you want to challenge yourself with new material and perspectives, it may be better to look somewhere else. It might've been my TA but I found the class to be stupidly easy. I didn't really feel like I learned much at the end tbh. On the bright side, she was accessible.
Julliette Levy is very passionate about the Long Twentieth Century. Her class is straightforward and gives a lot of extra credit, which helps. I would however avoid TA Christella Maldonado if she is a TA for your course. She graded very harsh and does not care about giving students failing grades on assignments. One of the worst TA's I have had.
I took her for Hist 020. Free A, it's online. She makes history very entertaining. I just wish she went through some more events during the century. Besides some random facts, I feel like I didn't learn much outside of my final project topic. Fun class, though.
pretty easy class. even though we didnt go over the lecture in the discussion it wasnt a bad class. It was a bit boring but easy.
The class is fun, but be prepared to read and write. The rubric's were often confusing, but the professor responds fairly quick if you ask a question. The TA's will be the best place to alleviate any confusion, since Levy doesn't appear to grade the larger assignments. Missed an assignment worth 10% and still ended with an A+ thanks to extra credit
definitely one of the easier history classes for GE especially if you can get the summer course. there are reading but it is graphic novels and she offers extra credit. assignments could be tedious and do take more effort, but as long as you follow the prompt you're guaranteed a passing grade.
AMAZING CLASS. Don't overthink the assignments/fall behind. Just pick a topic, find 3 sources, and WRITE about it and you'll pass. Instructions are vague on purpose so don't overwork yourself. Just do something! Expect to spend 3-4 hours for each of 5 assignments. Lecture reactions just make picture notes. TAs are hilarious!! 9 zooms that are easy
Very sweet professor. Lectures were short podcasts. Passionate about her knowledge in history and introduced us to stories of her own family history. Homework did get a little confusing and tedious at times but was never difficult. She was straightforward with deadlines. TAs were very helpful. Asynchronous no textbook no test. You will not regret
I liked my experience in this class. It was creative that we get to choose our own history projects at all times. The instructor used podcasts as lecture materials which was quite fun and unique. Overall it was flexible. But I think we do have to put work to get good score! You get 9% of extra credit. My TA Hailee was so amazing, kind and helpful!
This class really depends on your TA. There were weekly podcast reactions which were easy. Every two weeks there was a project which was a little annoying and time consuming but that is it for this class.
This was genuinely one of the best professor I have ever had! She is so kind and caring and amazing. Every week there's typically a medium sized project/ assignment due along with lecture comments. You need to put a little effort into the class, but overall very doable. I've had Levy twice and she is an amazing professor!
Easy online course. One short asynchronous lecture per week. Extra credit quizzes once a week. Lecture response (150-200 words) assignment given once a week. One longer assignment per week as well but never super difficult, just time consuming. Story maps is where all assignments are done - takes a little to get used to but nothing too crazy.
Very surprised I got such a high grade in this class after feeling so stressed out by it. I probably got it from extra credit and the final paper. The content of the class is interesting, but there is a Storymaps paper assignment EVERY WEEK. The instructions on the weekly assignments are very vague, and the professor sets harsh grading rules for TA
Love Levy! she really lets you do your own thing for assignments and her lectures are like podcast. Really easy class.
Pretty easy class. The entire class is just a research report about any topic world history related in the 20th that you write over the course of the quarter. These reports are separated by decades and one is due each week (summer). They also build on one another so your final report assignment is really easy. Pick a topic and ask prof if confused.
The professor is very passionate about history and her lectures are like podcasts. But the majority of your grade is based off multiple research projects, which have an extremely unclear rubric. The TAs grade harshly and the average was a C for these projects. Definitely a time consuming class,
I don't have any complaints about Prof. Levy. She has her 2 weekly podcasts that you write on and it's not difficult. However, every two weeks there is a research project. Very unclear rubric and grading seems subjective. Rubric also changes every time so you can't get better and learn as you go.
projects make no sense and lecture podcasts do not help nor does discussion. workload outside of projects not heavy but class can most def be run better
Fall 2025. I just want to say, the point of asking for help isn't there. While I can't say much for the professor's podcast lectures, her rubric and syllabus fail. She had students survey what the class needed improvement on, to change nothing at all. You're better off taking HIST15 or 10. Essays are better than these "research projects."
Don't do it. You think it's history; it's just her rambling about her own. I prefer learning over hearing someone's romanticized war story. Both the lecturer and the TA are unhelpful, and the TA has an ego. Hope she learns instead of stressing more students out with unclear projects. I think they are graded on how they feel that day, honestly.
The worst research class and requirement class I've taken. I'd like to express my history as freely as hers, but you get the LOC, and that's it. If you can keep up with no answers or help, this would be for you, but it was a terrible experience on my end, even if I pass. More time was put into this class than my upper divisions; think on that.
Terrible prof, genuinely has no idea what she's doing. If you want to have a project every other week with the most vague instructions possible, take this class. If you want to have unhelpful TAs with strict grading, take this class.
A nice professor
The assignments aren't too bad but her rubric and grading scale is kinda confusing. You're gonna be accustomed to hearing mini lectures on the 20th century and stories of her great grandmother. But overall, the class isn't terrible but the assignments can seem tedious and overwhelming during midterm season & finals week. She does give E.C. tho.
Just okay. A bit vague on assignment criteria, and sometimes weirdly pretentious? But class overall is not too difficult. Just research projects that require a lot of writing for an intro class, imo. She does offer some extra credit and drops some lowest scores. Not a good choice if you're looking for an easy breadth.
Too much work. Each week you have to complete a lecture reaction, and a research project every two weeks. Grade is completely based on your TA. Unclear grading criteria. Would not take again.
One of the easiest classes i've taken at UCR. Her instructions are very vague bur the TA explains them, and they grade very leniently. Projects are simple just don't wait till the last minute and you'll be fine.
Very interesting class. She does lecture podcasts. So it is more like a story than a lecture. You have to write your thoughts and you can do this in anyway for the assignment like tiktok or essay. Then you have discussion which was easy. I lucked out and had a great TA. 5 project parts. Did it in ArcGIS Story Map. Very easy just put in effort.
