She is horrible teacher. She doesn't explain or clarify herself. She has absolutely no patience and is extremely unorganized. She completely turned me off to ever taking another French class. She is by far the worst teacher I've had here at Michigan.
She whines, complains of her work load and its our grades that suffer...unorganized, looses our assignments and expects us to know French as well as she does. Announces grades aloud-Do not take her, you will EXTREMELY REGRET IT
The class itself wasn't too bad. It's very important to study your vocab because she gives you vocab quizzes almost every day. Make sure you do your homework as well. She wasn't as understanding as I had hoped for.
the only time she was plesant and actually tried to teach us is when another faculty member was sitting in our class. She is not very nice and is very moody. Doesn't posses good teching skills. Her excuses get old fast for not having our assignments.
For what its worth in terms of my tuition,I didn't return after Thanksgv.break. For somone completely unfamilar w/ French it is next to impossible to do well on the exams w/her as an instructor due to her being highly unorganized ¬ knowing the the text
She really isnt understanding at all. She moves through things very quickly and then we run out of time and she wont explain. I was always lost in that class. She gave hard quizzes all the time. I wont take French anymore.
I found her to be a great professor. This class is not for lazy students hoping to get a quick and high grade to boost their GPA. Most language profs at UM are very tough, passionate and very overworked - that's just the game.
This professor is willing to help you if you need it!!
Unsure why rating is so low -- Juliette is a very helpful lecturer and a very nice woman.
She was far more difficult that any of my previous french professors. She took forever to return papers and was very unprofessional during my oral interview (I was interrupted while she spoke french to the person she shares her office with.)Avoid her if you're only taking french for the requirement.
This woman is unpleasant, unfriendly, and clearly hates her job. She is not helpful and is unclear. She seems to want to prove how intelligent she is over her own students. Avoid her at all costs - you WILL regret it if you get stuck with her.
Oy. She humiliates you in front of the class. When she handed back papers and tests to me, she'd make rude remarks like "oh thats not good" or "you know, you need to study every day." I feel like my grade should not be told to the whole class. At office hours, she seemed annoyed that I was there.
DROP THIS CLASS! most painful and frustrating class ever. I learned some french but it was at the cost of my self-worth or esteem. I don't think I did a single thing right all semester (at least anything that was good enough for her to even smile at). I participated every day too. what a waste.
Juliette is not an easy lecturer, but she is skilled, knowledgeable and energetic. She does her best to have grading done on time, though sometimes it is delayed. She is always there when someone needs help. Your grade my not be the highest it’s been, but you will take a lot away from the course.
I felt grading policies were unfair and she assumed that students were not working hard enough. She assumes that everyone can be great if they study hard enough and that's just not the case. She said we should study 3 hours a night. That's 12-15 hours a night for 4-5 classes. Right. No sleep?
I have disliked all of my French classes ever, but she was probably my favorite instructor.
Needs to keep personal comments to herself, a very harsh grader, but she will help anyone during her office hours.
I expected these classes to be difficult, but Juliette's teaching style made them worse. She was harsh and seemed to enjoy embarassing her students. I was honestly afraid to go to class. She also never handed back work on time which made it impossible to improve our assignments and expected way too much of us. We were not native French speakers!
Although I was frustrated a lot in her class and I didn't get the great assignment grades (tough grader), I did well in the class because she really makes your grade based on your performance and class participation. If you deserve the good grade, you'll get it. At times she was a little harsh, but she was a great teacher and an asset to U of M!
After taking french for four years in high school I was really looking forward to this class. However, Juliette's tough grading style disapointed me greatly. I think she would be a great teacher if she related to her students more. But instead she judges harshly and creates an environment where students are afraid to answer questions.
Very unorganized, VERY hard grader
Well, going into this class i was pretty confident, considering i had taken french since the 6th grade. However, the first hw assignment i got a check minus minus. Damn is she a hard grader. The only reason i got through this class was from previous knowledge of the language learned from high school. She can be very blunt but remember, she's French
crazy harsh grader: I've never missed class, do all the homework, spend an average of an hour a night studying (being expected to study more than that is just unrealistic), do extra homework assignments, and go her office hours every week, and I'm on the verge of failing the course. French may not be my strongest subject, but for christ's sake!
She is a very hard teacher and expects a lot out of her students. She is also a hard grader.
like everyone else has said, very harsh grader. she's fun to talk to but not to have grade your papers. she teaches things (conditional/use of "en") chapters before you have to learn it which makes things more difficult at the time but potentially easier later. hard grader, but if you're good at french she'll keep you challenged.
Very hard grader- avoid her class if possible. Near impossible to get an A. Very, very high expectations for participation in class- so be ready to talk a lot in French. Homework almost every night.
Juliette's class was NOT that hard. If you do every assignment and study you'll do well. She may not be the most tolerant and yes she holds high standards but that's because she expects highly of students who are in COLLEGE (duh...) If you want an intructor who is easy to understand and explains everything clearly, Julliete's your woman!
Not a good teacher. Expected way too much work...even for someone in college. I had her 3 semesters ago and she remains my least favorite teacher. On the brightside she made every spanish teacher since seem easy.
really bad teacher
Very Tough Grader, spends more time in class talking about paragraphs then teaching what is going to be on the exams resulting in lower test scores. But is very helpful when visited for office hours.
Yes, she's a tough grader, especially on the paragraphs, and she expects a lot from each student. She's a nice woman though and is willing to help you out during office hours, and if she has time she will even change her office hours around to accomodate your schedule.
Juliette was great all-around. She was very helpful, and I loved going to talk to her during office hours. Her teaching really improved my knowledge of French.
Juliette expects way too much for a class like French 103. All she talks about is how things she is teaching is for the next level. If i wanted to be in 231 already i would have taken it, so let me finish 103 first before you start teaching me 231.
I loved this class and Juliette! She is a hard grader, and the class is a lot of work (about 8 hours a week), but it is doable. She is so passionate about her class you cannot help but be interested. I learned a great deal-in vocab, grammar, and French culture. Take a class with Juliette if possible!
She is rude and a really bad teacher. Dont take her class
I loved Juliette. She is a tough grader who demands a lot of her students, but if you're serious about learning French, she'll help you A LOT. She comes on strong, but if you get to know her, you'll see that she's really fun and cares about her students. I wish she taught higher level courses because I miss her!
JULIETTE is a really really nice lady. but a two faced horribly hard teacher. she has a great personality and does want to help, but can be very condescending, and talk down to you. If you can avoid her class at all, please do, she admits to grading harder than any of the other teachers. at least 4 people in my class are failing.
A nice person that may have meant well, but came off harsh and condescending. Made me hate french and receive the lowest grade on my transcript despite never missing a class or assignment.she called students weak and careless in front of peers. She openly admits that she is biased when grading because she's from france, americans don't grade right
Yes, Juliette is a tough teacher. She made me cry about two to three times during one semester, but she was also extremely understanding as a prof- letting me make up quizzes I totally forgot about. She even gave me a hug and told me to "hang in there" after I slept through her class one day. She is just misunderstood. I took two of her courses!
Juliette definitely makes you work for your grades in the class. She's a great professor if you're really into French, but if its just for the requirement, look elsewhere. Students must be open to criticism. For writing, use complex structure (aim for 2 clauses), use lots of conjunctions, and show off a variety of verb tenses. Learn the vocab!
Wow. Juliette is a VERY HARD TEACHER. I entered her class everyday with anxiety because she is cut throat in the classroom. She can make you feel so stupid in class and really make you HATE french. In office hours, she is nice but she has really high expectations and she has no problem failing students.
She is probably very nice 1 on 1. But I wouldn't dare find out. She does not respond to questions kindly.
PLEASE AVOID THIS TEACHER. Juliette is a nice person, but maybe the worst teacher at Michigan. I can honestly say she ruined my semester, and is an impossible grader. Going to office hours did not help (myth that it is helpful). I have two friends who straight failed the class and have to retake. AVOID FOR 232, take it next semester if you must
Worst professor I have ever had. Grades hard and does not teach. Is also rude to students. Spends class time complaining about how much work she has and frequently goes over new material after she's already given a quiz on it. If you are so unlucky to get her for 232 do go to office hours - at least she'll like you better.
I am a science major, and I will say that she is by-far the hardest teacher I have ever had. SHE IS A HARSH GRADER. However, that does not mean that you will fail this class. If you work hard, and if you study the way she tells u to study (like review vocab daily), u will get an A. Also, she is an AMAZING teacher, one of the best I have had.
Julliette is absolutely the worst proffessor I have had at Michigan. The only way to learn anything in her class is to teach yourself. Rude to students, mocks them openly in class. wastes time complaining about how busy she is. Go to office hours, she will help you, and like you better. Made me hate french, france, and french people in general.
For everyone that says she is the worst teacher, you are wrong. I read these statements and was scared out of my mind to ake her. I loved her. she was so great. Go to office hours. Don't believe others when they say that "YOU SHOULDNT TAKE HER" beause as i was leaving the class I stopped and said to myself... What were people talking about!"
I loved juliette, she was hard yes but she actually does teach you the material. the french department curriculum sucks in general, juliette does not, she does the best with what she's given. I never went to office hours, but i volunteered alot in class and that got me an A-. don't be afraid to take her! she's not that bad!
Let's be real, worst prof ever. The ppl that liked her are the ppl that got A's, of course you will like your prof if you get an A. She is a condescending snarky lady. She grades ridiculous. I had taken french for 5 years prior but that didn't matter. I would rather take 8 am classes then have her as my prof.
Juliette was very intimidating and she terrified me, especially after reading some of these comments. But once I got past that, she was okay. She seemed to sense I was trying really hard and took pity on me. The class was impossible, but I wouldn't avoid the section just because she's the teacher. She's not so bad.
Ridiculous teacher. She is a very condescending woman. Also, very intimidating. She says that trying is important to her, but she grades you based on the students she thinks you are. Worst teacher I have had thus far. She grades 102 students like they're upper level and gives .8's ect. on journals/SAMS. Do NOT take this professor.
ok at first i was scared to have her as a teacher because she had bad ratings. but she was like such a nice teacher, and if you went to office hours she was willing to help ! yea, there was a lot of hw in that class but it's the same in any french class. i loved juliette she was prolly my fav french teacher i learned so much.
In spite of the many negative comments here, I loved Juliette! She teaches very well, and her grading is not that harsh. Those who felt that she was too hard might do well to remember that this is a college level French course, not high school...
Juliette was an awesome teacher! I loved her. Yes, she grades hard, but she wants you to *learn* stuff and not just sit there like a corpse. Her heart is big and she is always willing to help. She respects people who work hard.
Tough professor, but you will be ahead for the next level.
she is a ridiculous grader and unfortunately grades you for what type of student SHE thinks you are rather than how you are actually doing. I highly recommend that you do not have her as a professor and switch out of her class immediately if she is your professor.
Juliette is the BEST profesora I've had at U of M. No other teacher has put in the same dedication to her students. I owe my proficiency in Spanish all to her and promise that even if you are not the "best" in Spanish, if you try hard, she'll reward you. Just be excited to learn and participate in class! And use connectors!
RE:I enjoyed this class! Juliette is an interesting, funny, and passionate teacher. But yes, she IS a tough grader, which hurt my grade. You will be much better off as long as you study every day, participate in class, and do what she assigns, even extra stuff! She checks for homework everyday. I truly improved my Spanish skills thanks to Juliette!
She is very nice. She is a tough grader, but it is because she cares about learning and not just giving you a grade for G.P.A. She put in her best effort every day and always was willing to help. She will prepare like crazy for the real world of speaking spanish. I am glad that I had her.
Juliette is a great teacher. She puts in a lot of time and effort and truly wants you to do well in her class as well as understand spanish. There is homework, but it is very manageable. As long as you study and pay attention in class you will get a good grade. If you want to learn spanish, take 231 with Juliette, there is no better teacher
Definitely a tough teacher, but you can do well in her class as long as you put in the work. Participate a lot and always do the homework to the best of your ability - she's very good and telling how much work you actually put into your assignments. She's a phenomenal prof and you can learn a lot from her if you care to.
This is not an easy class at all. She is an extremely difficult grader. I placed into Spanish 232 and switched down to 231 because I thought it would be easier and it was. The problem was that this teacher does not give A's. Also, she has no sense of humor. Her class is very boring and she is not a happy person.
Juliette is tough as hell. A's are hard to come by, and she is a very harsh grader. I learned a lot, but she expects a lot of you, too.
We all love Juliette, but she is strict and TOUGH! I mean, we were near tears at the end of her class, but she really expects a lot from you. If you take this, make sure you are on TOP of everything and keep going to office hours. Words to the wise: Use connectors and vocab and she will love your writing.
Juliette is a great teacher, and you will learn a lot from her class. BUT I WARN YOU. This teacher is an extremely tough grader, and if you are not willing to put in the effort, you WILL do poorly. I worked my butt off in this class and got an A-, and I had always gotten high A's in Spanish in high school. She has ridiculously high expectations.
The class itself is tough regardless of what teacher you have. Be prepared to work every night. Juliette is a tough grader, but she can also be very understanding and is always willing to help. She is not a native speaker, so she understands how hard it can be.
If your want to craft your way to a perfect gpa, don't take this class. If, on the other hand, you want to learn Spanish, this prof'd be great for that--she's very helpful, great at explaining things (especially grammar and culture), and our class had a ton of fun. Highly recommend.
Class destroys GPA. Only take if you feel absolutely comfortable with volunteering and with a strong background in Spanish. We go over nearly every tense and there's alot of memorization as well as comprehension. Juliette is very nice but office hours aren't helpful because she tells you everything you did wrong on the test & you can't keep them!
This class is very hard, but manageable. All you have to do is keep up with the readings, look up words you don't know, keep studying things from past chapters, and USE CONNECTORS. Overall, she is an amazing teacher! She has a lot of knowledge about culture. She rarely got mad at our class and we actually had a lot of fun!
Spanish 232 in general is a really hard class regardless of the teacher. My class was very intimidated by her in the beginning, but she is actually very nice. If you go to office hours or talk to her outside of class it is very beneficial. She really wants us to do well. Work very hard and do what she wants you to and you'll do well in the class.
Hardest Spanish 231 teacher. Very focuses on "sophisticated" writing, but does not teach you how to do this. She is a hilarious woman, but as a teacher, very difficult. Don't expect an A.
Juliette was a good teacher. She always wants you to be consistent, and try your best. She is very approachable whenever you need help. She spends most of her class time going over corrections (which I did not like). If you want to become good in Spanish and you are willing to work hard take Juliette! If not transfer IMMEDIATELY!
Juliette is one of the few teachers who really cared about my progress in a class. While she is in no way an easy teacher, she is extremely thorough and willing to help. If you participate often and prepare for the quizzes/exams (VOCAB!!!!) then you will do just fine in this class.
Juliette is an amazing teacher, and expects a lot from her students. Be prepared to work for your grade and actually learn the language. Use vocab!!!!
She was extremely hard to understand since her first language is French. She was sometimes funny and made cute comments but it did not make her teaching any easier. You always have a lot of homework and basically I dreaded going to her class every day.
Difficult class, but you actually learn the material. The class was really intimidating at first, but just do the homework and participate and you'll do just fine.
One of the best teachers I've had at Michigan. She really did a great job balancing the grammar of the language with cultural aspects. Beautiful woman and very realistic in terms of grading. Very funny and understanding with her students
She expects everyone to try their best and acknowledges efforts. She relays lectures in an excited and interesting way and it is obvious that she loves her job. You will not do well if you do not care or seem uninterested, but with effort and enthusiasm a good grade is easily achievable. She is very motivating and one of the best teachers I've had.
Juliette was a fantastic teacher. She is one of the most passionate professors that I've experienced so far at U of M. The class can be difficult at times since her expectations are high, but this leads to lots of learning and high-yield results. Participation was key in this class, as well as general enthusiasm.
Basically dreaded going to this class everyday and did not enjoy going to office hours because she was such a bad teacher. Her first language is French so it makes her spanish EXTRAORDINARILY hard to understand, and she would get upset when people did not understand what she was saying. There also was way too much homework that had little relevance
Just really bad, don't take any of her classes if you want a good gap
She is a tough but great professor. She has high expectations of her students. Material is not incredibly difficult but she assigns a lot of homework. There are probably other 232 professors who would be an easier A, but I learned a lot in this class and her high expectations led me to work harder and feel incredibly accomplished by the end.
Juliette is an extremely tough teacher. The homework she assigns is completely irrelevant and you basically have to teach yourself the grammar outside of class. She does care about her students but overall she makes an already hard class even harder.
Juliette is a great teacher. She balances a lot, teaches multiple courses and speaks like four languages, so she doesn't have time for disorganization from her students. She's also French, and my experience with French teachers is that they demand a level of organization and excellence that isn't always demanded by English teachers. Take the class.
Juliette is such a sweet, kind woman. She's really passionate about the class and Hispanic culture. Things are explained clearly, both content-wise and the expectations. There is homework every night, but it's graded for completion, not correctness. The tests are fair, and she gives helpful corrections on the essays. I love her!
Profesora Moutinou really cares about you as a student. She really wants to see us improve as Spanish speakers, so if that means forcing you to participate and giving you a bad participation grade, she will. With that being said, she puts a lot of time into her feedback. If you actually want to become good at Spanish, I highly recommend her.
Use vocab, participate, and incorporate everything you've learned so far in your assignments. If you plan to go far in spanish, she will be beneficial in the long run because she really forces you to learn. If this is just your last language credit you have to take and you don't want to continue with spanish, choose someone else!!!!
I have always loved Spanish but this class was awful, worse than all of my science classes. She assigns huge amounts of work and demands a lot out of her students yet she doesn't prepare or teach the material well. Avoid if possible.
The single worst teacher at the University of Michigan. She does not follow the course syllabus or give assignments back on time. She doesn't know how to teach. Put in twice as much work as students with other teachers and received lower grades. Also she constantly belittles students in front of the class.
If you talk to Juliette outside of class, you can tell she really cares about her students and wants them to do well. I really liked her as a person, however, as a teacher -- not so much. Not good at explaining things and never really teaches anything. No help at all when it comes to preparing for tests. Literally all we did in class was go over hw
Juliette is one of the best teachers that I've had in the French Department. She demands a lot from her students and assigns a lot of homework, but if you're willing to put the time in you will truly learn French. Her business French course is hands-down the most useful class I've taken and has been essential to my post-graduate plans.
Professor Moutinou is a very tough grader and your grade involves a great deal of participation. Although she is a tough professor, she really knows her stuff. You will definitely have to work for your grade but going to her office hours will help.
At first, I was intimidated by Prof. Moutinou, but I really grew to love her over the course of the semester. This class is TOUGH (although I have no background or interest in business), but overall enjoyable, especially the collaborative project with French students!
TAKE THIS CLASS. This is the most valuable and informative French class I've had at U of M. Juliette is kind and truly cares about her students. You will learn a lot on French society as a whole and will information that anyone considering working/living in France should know. I would recommend this class over every other French class at U of M.
This course was amazing! The content is so practical and met every expectation of mine. Discusses and teaches valuable things pertaining to French life (banking, businesses, letters, etc.). Really, really helpful course and the lecturer is passionate and gives good feedback. She also facilitates well the group sessions with actual French students!
Juliette is an amazing professor. Her class was the most practical course I've taken in any department at U of M. Not only is she an excellent pedagogue as far as language is concerned, she teaches French culture (both pedestrian and business) in a way that's engaging. She'll make you work for an A, but she genuinely is a great professor.
The course material was tough but it was rather interesting. I've always liked language classes where the students get to learn about the habits and trends in a culture instead of just learning the language itself. Juliette assigned a lot of homeworks, but they are manageable if you are not taking a lot of other classes during the semester.
Made a difficult class even harder. She doesn't always go by the syllabus, and sometimes teaches the wrong material in hopes to make you go 'above and beyond' even though it's clearly not in our skill set. Expects far too much from her students, and often rudely comments on mistakes in class. I get nervous wondering what could go wrong every class.
This was a great class. She was always genuinely excited to teach and made class fun. I wouldn't call it an "easy A," but the more you pay attention in class, the better you do. She does a great job of preparing students for quizzes/ tests just by going to class.
One of the better spanish teachers or professors I've ever had but she makes you work for your grade. You need to participate everyday in class in order to do well, but she is kind and makes class enjoyable. Homework almost every day
My favorite professor I have taken at Umich. She is a tough grader, but clear on what she wants from you. If you show up to class and participate there is no reason you can't get an A. She cares for her students and will do anything she can in and out of class to make you a better Spanish Student. Would definitely take her again.
I took International Business French in Fall 2018. I really liked the class and although there was a decent amount of work, as long as you complete it and participate in class you'll be fine.
If you are taking Spanish 103, be cautious of the work involved and the quickness of the curriculum, this course is as challenging as it is demanding. Don't worry! Juliette is the BEST teacher to guide you through Spanish 103. She truly cares for her students and will do anything to ensure their success. I feel lucky to have had her as a teacher.
Professor Moutinou seems extremely intimidating at first, however she cares a lot about her students and loves the language. We would have worksheets every night for homework and spent the entire class going over them. If youve taken spanish before and do the hw you should have no problem getting an A. Definitely not as bad as people say!
I took this class 3 semesters ago and I still consider her my least favorite professor. I barely knew Spanish coming in and found her to be condescending and far too demanding for an intro class. Her expectations for quizzes/journals were ridiculous. Although I hated her class, I was over prepared for future courses. Avoid her class if possible!
For intro level, Juliette was difficult. Rarely spoke English even when we asked for clarification several times (which for intro/first-time speakers is hard). When we were wrong she seemed to laugh a little. Calls on random people to answer in class, so if you zone out, don't take her section. Very kind woman, just a tough teacher.
Juliette is the kind of prof who will call you out in front of the entire class if you get something wrong which definitely helps you remember what you messed up but also makes you feel like garbage. She also walks by as you're taking a quiz and announces out loud to the class if you got something right or wrong.
One of the most energetic and helpful teachers I've ever had. She clearly cares for her students and gives plenty of opportunities to improve yourself. She is an enthusiastic teacher and by calling people out on their mistakes she makes sure you remember it and learn to fix it. Would sign up for another class with her in an instant!
I really loved my class with Professor Moutinou. It wasn't an easy A by any means but I actually got better at Spanish because she is a great and effective teacher. She is also super kind and sweet and treats the class like a family. Felt really comfortable participating in her class, she didn't make anyone feel bad for making mistakes.
She comes across as a bit strict and intimidating at first, but she is really caring, refers to the class as "a family," and her corrections in front of the class may feel embarrassing, but really help you learn (also everyone makes those mistakes at some point or another).
Juliette is an extremely caring and energetic woman, but she also scares the hell out of me. She is the type of teacher who really wants to make sure her students understand and makes an effort to do this. However, she also is the type to call students out for not understanding and as someone with diagnosed anxiety it sometimes resulted in tears...
Juliette is a very nice and caring person unlike what the other ratings make her out to be. Make sure not to take her correcting you in class personally, she's a little strict when doing so, but rather she will help you make sure you understand. She wants you to succeed and will take the time to ensure that you do.
Im taking this 8 credit course for a half-semester so you could imagine the workload. The first few lectures with Juliette were tough and I can barely understand her, but after a week everythings been going wonderful. Lectures and assignments are extremely knowledgeable for a second year language class. Please dont hesitate to sign up for her!
Juliette is a very stand-up person and an incredible educator. Her compassion for her students is known, even through the stricter European-style teaching ;-) She strives to create a familial setting and it's very encouraging. Be prepared for a different and more direct teaching style, she will challenge you to be your best. C'est pas grave!
While demanding, Profe cares about her student's success very much. A lot of work and a lot of stress at times, but if you want to genuinely learn, she's the teacher for you. I feel so much more prepared for language courses in the future because of her. Also - she's very funny. Stand up teacher, and even more-so a Stand up Person. 10/10
I loved Prof Moutinou, and I see why others didn't. She is TOUGH. Preparation and participation is expected. If you're lacking, you will be called out on it. Some take offense, but the reality is she cares about us and wants us to learn. This is why she demands so much. She goes above and beyond giving feedback and is available almost 24/7.
Juliette is great professor, the class is definitely very fast paced, but as long as you keep up with the material you should be fine. My biggest tip is to PARTICIPATE. It matters so much and she takes it very seriously. Participate multiple times throughout the class and show that you're motivated to get a good grade and you will.
I did not enjoy this class. If you do the work it is not hard to get a good grade, but the Profe Moutinou is extremely tough and I was constantly anxious in this class. She cold calls a lot and you have to participate a ton.
Moutinou ruined this entire language for me and made going to every class a chore. The workload was immense and the grading was incredibly strict. I could not get above an 85% no matter how hard I tried, so it made putting in any effort seem extremely futile and killed my joy of the language.
I absolutely hated this class. If at all possible don't take Moutinou's class unless you already know the language. She has 0 patience for someone struggling and if you aren't fluent going in you will not succeed.
(She gets a lot harsher reviews on here than she deserves!) She seems very intimidating at first, but you can tell that she truly values her students and their improvement! Once you get comfortable with the heavy work flow of class, you can really tell what a great and caring teacher she is. She is a forgiving grader and gives great feedback, too!
A very tough class, but not impossible. Feedback was helpful on homework and journals, but she wanted everyone to earn an A in the class, so she was hard on us, making it stressful. The class always had homework, online or on paper, and if you miss a class you won't know what to complete. Make sure to have enough time for homework and to study.
Madame Moutinou is genuinely the worst and most unfair instructor I have ever had. Mme often publicly belittled and humiliated me. On top of this, she is one of the most strict graders. Further, she uses the flipped classroom method and if you don't get something, you're simply screwed because she will not help you nicely. Avoid at all costs.
I do not believe Madame Moutinou is a good person or teacher. She needs to be fired.
Madame Moutinou should be avoided at all costs.
Get ready to work! Really, everything you do is important, as doing a little mistake after she's corrected it will dock points for you. I will say that my French has improved a lot due to her rigor, but isn't so bad as some make it out to be. She truly believes in putting in the effort (participation/studying) and she really doubles down on it.
Mme is just straight up mean
Beware of Mme Moutinou. Would avoid at all costs.
Teaching Spanish she was very strict, which could be scary at times and she really picked apart our writing when grading it. That said, she was pretty clear about what she wanted to see. This class definitely took lots of effort but if you go to office hours and show that you're trying she seems truly invested in her students' improvement.
Juliette played favorites to a fault. In a beginner Spanish class, she corrected people extremely demeaningly to the point that students did not want to speak. She cannot criticize constructively and suffice it to say I will never take another Spanish class, despite planning to pursue a minor going into 277. Do not take her class.
Professor Moutinou is an exceptional teacher. She expects a lot of her students, but truly works to make sure that they are the best Spanish speakers that they can be. She provides immediate feedback when speaking in class, and also makes thorough corrections on all journals/assignments. In class participation in this course is highly important.
Strict but fair. I planned on dropping the class the first week but stayed because of her interesting teaching style. She appears to be genuinely invested in the learning of her students and it shows in class. 100% recommend taking her class if you want to learn some Spanish!
Don't listen to the other reviews of profe. Most don't understand that her teaching method is meant to make you better. My classmates even agreed that I wasn't profe's favorite student, however, her teaching was all that I needed. She goes into depth for every grammar topic that we went over and gave in depth corrections to each journal.
Juliette was a good professor. However, very strict. Getting an A in the class is not hard if you do your assignments on time and listen to her constructive criticism, because she will do whatever she can to make you better at spanish. She cold calls on people and will correct them in vocab or grammar mistakes. She can be both intimidating and kind
I absolutely loved her class! Yes, she was strict, but she was never unwilling to work with you to improve. In all ways, Juliette was absolutely lovely, and I genuinely found myself enjoying her classes. She encouraged me to work harder, to apply myself. I would absolutely take her class again!
Profe Moutinou was an amazing Spanish professor! I took Spanish 277 with the hopes of improving my speaking and literacy skills. Her structure and passion motivated me to be a better student. Profe Mountinou is passionate and truly wants to see her students succeed. If you want to learn and improve in Spanish, take her class!
Juliette has a unique teaching style that is not for the weak, but if you openly accept her critiques you will learn a ton! This particular course included a lot of different topics and I feel like I have a better understanding of the Francophone business world thanks to her. Show up eager and ready to learn and she will reciprocate that energy!
She is tough and will really push you to improve over the semester. She is respectful to all of her students and demanding in a good way. Energy is important to her and you definitely get out of the class what you put in. It was a tough semester together but my French abilities grew a crazy amount!
Madam Moutinou is a passionate educator that I wish so many could learn from. Her approach to life and outlook inspired me tremendously (and I did enjoy the French too). When you take her course, know there will be laughs, great advice, powerful insights, and caring guidance. I came in looking to fulfill credits, but left with a full heart
The expectations Moutinou had were ridiculous. This class was harder than my organic chemistry course only because of the professor. I never got above a 80% on my writings no matter how much time I put in. Avoid taking her at all costs.
Madame Moutinou runs a tough class, but it's worth it - my French improved a ton. The workload is heavy, but using unstuckstudy and the free textbook really helped me stay on top of it.
Overall, Prof. Moutinou is a solid professor. However, she may sometimes come off as strict or rude—which I believe is expected given her foreign educational background. Her teaching style can be intimidating, but you'll be fine if you come to class prepared every day and actively participate in class. Do expect a heavy workload in FRENCH 380.
she really wants you to learn and take the class seriously, my past french instructors have been p lenient on mostly everything, but she is like the first instructor that will actually correct you when youre wrong and tell you how to fix it. if you genuinely want to get better at french, take her. if youre just looking for an easy A, do not
My Spanish knowledge has improved SUBSTAINTIALLY due to Profe M's teaching style. She has the kindest heart of any teacher I've ever had & truly cares about your growth which has made it easy to stay motivated to strengthen my skills. If you can't handle blunt feedback & tough-grading, she's not for you, but I personally praise her compassion.
I took Spanish 277. There's need to obviously step up to the plate considering its a higher course. The class is manageable and can pass as long as you do the work and meet with her. She does have the appeal of being tough but do not be scared or deterred. Even as a novice, I managed to do decent in that class. Be prepared to put in work.
She communicated very well and answered emails, even late at night. She is intimidating, so I wouldn't recommend her for people who get hurt easily, but she is caring and wants everyone to succeed. There are many assignments, so if you miss one that is worth little, it should be okay, but don't miss the big value assignments, that's how I got a B.
It's a necessity to learn to adapt your writing to what this prof wants. She can be snappy and defensive if she does not believe you are putting forth as much effort as she thinks you should. If you work hard, she will recognize it. Don't take her if you are looking for an easy A!
Professor Moutinou is the worst professor I have had at Umich. If you see her name on your schedule drop immediately.
She really really cares about all of her students and puts in a lot of effort and expects you to do that same-I definitely learned a ton in her class
She's the most caring professor I've ever had and she really makes an effort to form relationships with her students. She has very high expectations and gives tough feedback, but she consistently reminds her students that she just wants them to improve. If you want to actually learn Spanish, I highly recommend her!
My grade in Prof. Moutinou's class is likely lower than it would have been with other professors, but my Spanish skills have improved significantly. Given that I'm here to learn at the level afforded by a T20 school, the tradeoff feels worthwhile. It's clear that she cared deeply about every person in my class, and I really enjoyed the class.
She was pretty strict but overall helped me learn.I really felt disrespected the last day of class when she pretended like we had a quiz, during finals week, so everyone in the class spent the day studying for this quiz just for it to be a “joke” because she was afraid nobody would come on the last day. I felt like she had no respect for my time.
Overall, I think Prof. Mountinou is a solid professor. She cares deeply about her students and their learning but can come off as harsh at times. Participation is necessary, she's a tough grader, and she's a little old school. However, I learned the most spanish I ever have in this course. Take this course ifyou want to improve, not if you want an A
She is a very rough grader. I found it nearly impossible to improve my essay grades. I respect her but if she is going to grade this hard and expect this much from non spanish speaking students, the grading scale should be nicer. I worked very hard and did better in calc 3 than I did this class.
