Excellent and entusiastic professor, he is very interested in assisting his students to comprehend the material and discuss its real life applications.
Great class
Best.Professor.Ever
Julio is an AMAZING teacher! I absolutely love coming to the class! He makes things so easy to understand and he is very helpful when it comes to your grade, he gives opportunities to bump your grade if you are not happy with it, although you most likely wont need to do that because he makes things so interesting you are bound to get a good grade
Julio is an amazing professor, he knows how to lecture well and help keep the class engaged. He really is teaching to help students. If you follow along with the notes and study guides the class is as easy as pie. I really recommened for students to take him. He is overall a great professor.
He is really nice and very helpful. He gives you your study guide well before the test. Day before the test, he'll review the whole study guide and answers any questions. Just show up for class, be engaged in lectures, and you'll pass.
Amazing pure hearted professor! Helps you a lot! Gives you study guides before each exam; however, his way of explaining things are not so clear sometimes! You need to study the chapter before attending the class so you won't get lost during his lecture! otherwise, very nice ! Highly recommend his class!
Loved this class. Soto is funny, energetic, and really wants you involved. If your participate in this class not only will you thoroughly enjoy yourself. You will get a great understanding of Sociology and an A. If you going to take this class, i Recommend Soto 100%
I miss Julio...he not only loves the subject of Sociology, but he truly and honestly cares for every single one of his students-which he tells them everyday. In today's world, it's hard to find a true and kind hearted soul like Julio. If more teachers were like him, education would flourish
Wonderful caring teacher, lectures w/slides. HW is just pre-reading chap before class, 4 exams (2 pgs notes allowed), offers extra credit, pay attention and engage with Julio and you'll get an A. Don't miss class, because he will drop you for absences. Overall easy class with a funny, energetic guy who truly cares about you.
Awesome Professor, Lectures with slides. No Homework. 3 exams with notes. Offers extra credit papers. Don't miss class, because he will drop you for absences.
I was very nervous about my first semester of college, an I can honesty say taking Soto's class was the best desision I could have made I looked foward to coming to his class two days a week and almost wished I could have gone more, extra credit opportunities, he cares about his students on a persona level best professor ever!
Taking this class has been the contributor factor to my changing careers, the class material was fascinating and so life-real. Mr. Soto is clearly a student-focus instructor. I recommend for anyone to take his class even if it doesn't relate to your major, because it will occur to you from the first two lectures, that this is the class you need.
Sticker for attendance. Spends half of class taking role and doing 'announcements'. Skips half of lecture slides and mostly talks at class, reading and taking thorough notes recommended. Allows 3 pages of notes for all 4 exams and provides study guide, easy A. Condescendingrude if he doesn't like your question or comment.
Great teacher. Great person. Great Class. Easy, interesting, and fun. You will be glad you took him.
Easiest sociology teacher. No homework. Extra credit opportunities. Only 4 tests and if you have a question on them he will give you the answer. Do his study guides and you will pass.
Honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. He really cares about his students and naturally you will develop an interest in the subject through the activities provided and class interaction. I would recommend him to anyone.
Attendance is a big part of the class; Several students were dropped because they missed a couple days of class. If you aren't into attendance, try another teacher. Other than that, he's very engaging and passionate about the subject. He wants you to understand the material, but you need to ask for help. You MUST read.
Great professor. Meets you where you're at. If you need to take a soc 120 class this is the class you want!
Julio's very passionate about his subject. He tries to involve the students and get them into the topic. He uses slides, lectures, class activities, videos and guest speakers to help bring sociology to the student's level. He offers tons of EC opportunities. You do have to study for the tests, be on time for class and attend. Still an easy A though
Great class ! I would definitely recommend you take this class with professor Soto. He is very passionate about Sociology. All he really asks for is your respect and attendance. The book is mandatory, but I found myself almost never using it. I learned so much about the subject and how I can apply it towards my class. You cant go wrong with him!
Julio is full of himself, and he likes to hear himself talk. His class lectures are the same as his class discussions; he is the only who he allows to talk. He tries to be the Dead Poets Society type teacher and I can see how he has helped a lot of students, he is a very kind man. Just watch out for his ego!
Soto caught me by surprise on the first day of class. Never have I encountered such passion on a subject by a professor. He doesn't merely want you to regurgitate the material, he wants you to feel it and live it, which I find very refreshing. He's very strict on textbook use and attendance but his humor definitely makes the class zoom by.
Loved taking this class. Julio is very passionate about the subject and teaches material that is interesting and relevant. Make sure to show up to every class and do the assignments on time and you'll be ok. And keep up on the syllabus! Over all this is an easy pass class, but if you miss a big assignment (like I did) it will lower your grade!
I took this class during intersession and I would take this class again. This teacher really cares about his students, and is always willing to answer any questions. Just be ready to read.
Professor Soto is the best! He makes it clear that he wants you to learn and understand his what he is teaching. He doesn't make a big deal out of the tests. If you're having trouble, reach out to him and he will help you understand and he will help you boost your grade up with extra credit.
He is the best professor ever! Hilarious and very nice. Is passionate about what he does and gives good feedback. I recommend that you take his 7 week course. Four exams, and 5 reflections. Exams are easy and gives you the study guide. Would take again and loved this class. Again it is better to take him for 7 weeks, easy A. :)
I absolutely loved this class. I only took it as part of my ed plan but I am so glad I did. Julio is an awesome teacher. He brings real life to class and he has open honest discussions about real life issues. Attendance is mandatory if you want to pass. Trust me this is a class worth taking
I highly recommend Julio Soto for sociology 120. He's an amazing human being, an awesome instructor, and very engaging in class. He is passionate about sociology and he brings his enthusiasm to class at all times.
This class was hard. Mr. Soto needs to work on his communication with students. Every voice matters and should be heard, unfortunately a majority of the time he is speaking. He goes through the power points very quick and sometimes does not even go through all of them, so be prepared for a lot of reading. Attendance is crucial, so be prepared.
Was a really hard class. Was expecting to get a lot more out of from this class. Teacher does need to work on humility.
He was a funny cool teacher!!! I like the reflections that wr had to do.
Very chill teacher,I really dont get what some of these people are talking about. It's and easy class, if you need help ask for it, if you don't get something ask for clarification, you want extra credit again just ask, that's all you really need to do. I do recommend him
I strongly recommend this professor he is an inspirational person, he cares for his students , makes class interesting and funny. Participation matters but is optional he don't force you to talk but you do have to do a lot of reading and expect homework and short essays , tests are kind of tough but gives extra credit. Great Teacher take him :)
i love this teacher he opened my eyes if any teacher should be rewarded teacher of the year its this guy he will work around you and he cares for his students so much he is the definition of learning can be fun
Nice dude. 3/4 of our exams was take home, but that was a blessing so not sure that he'll do it again for other classes. It's mostly him that talks and try your best to stay awake because he often wanders from his original purpose of lecture. Keep up with reading and GO TO CLASS. Exam questions are specific so carefully read.
Amazing and very fair professor who cares for his students and wants you to pass. Don't know about next semester, but there were many extra credit opportunities during this semester. His humor, liveliness, and passion for the subject have kept me engaged in his lectures, and he is a very inspirational person.
Soto is so passionate about his work and wants everyone to do well in the class. A lot of extra credit opportunities, some take home tests, and thorough study guides. Don't try to rely on his lectures for the test because he tends to focus on one topic more than the rest, so be ready to use your book. I totally recommend him!!
Awesome ! He made class very easy, if you can take him do it!
Soto was a great professor. He made class very easy and fun. It was always great to show up to his classroom with him greeting the with an open heart. He does take home exams and works with the student.
This class was very interesting, it was one of my favorites, I always enjoyed coming to class. He did require some reading and some participation, but if you enjoy this class as much as I did you won't mind it. He is very passionate in what he teaches and acutually cares about his students. If you do the work and study this class is an easy A
Soto is the best professor I have ever had at Grossmont. He cares about his students and will work with you if you are having trouble.
Julio is great! He loves and cares about all of his students and has a genuine passion for not only teaching his students, but learning from them as well. The majority of our classes were power point lectures and documentaries. He encourages us to participate, all exams are at-home and allowed multiple attempts, and offers a lot of extra credit.
He's a great instructor! All of his homework and exams are online.
First things first after the fourth absence you are out. Next you have to do activities due every Sunday. All exams are online and you get to retake as many times as you want prior to due date which allows you to get an A. Final is a sacred box. provides extra credit too.
Mr. Soto was a great individual, but lacked when it came to being more specific about certain projects and tasks. I felt as if more of his inquizitives were more informative compared to his lectures. I learned more from the book and other people, than his lectures.
Mr. Soto is an amazing professor and his 120 class is designed for you to pass. Extra credit for DAYS. I passed with a 120 something %. BUY INQUIZITIVE (online textbook, its worth it) He gives hilarious lectures and you will actually open your mind to new ideas. All tests are take home and hw is always 1 page double spaced only. Caring/thoughtful.
Mr. Soto is an inspirational Sociology teacher here at Grossmont College. He is caring, but he truly cares about the topics. His political views always got in the way of the lecture, and I found that distracting at times. He gives loads of Extra Credit, and tests are online. This class is extremely easy, and getting an A is obtainable. Good guy!
Its not a hard class! All the tests are take home. There is a research paper but he gives you the instructions months in advance. Gives so many opportunities for extra credit. He is really caring and inspirational. He even offers students snacks in case theyre ever hungry (so kind). It is a pretty easy class and he is a really nice guy.
He's really passionate about sociology and he's really funny. He shows a bunch of documentaries and makes you write a page about them. One research paper. His tests are all online and you can look up all the answers. Don't buy the book, he never talks about it. Super easy class.
Professor Soto cares about his students so much. He really makes it easy to pass to give you an opportunity to learn. I took this class during my most difficult semester (anatomy class is killer) and I got an A. Never stressed about this class. Use it as an opportunity to open your mind. Not much class discussion, mostly just lecture and videos.
Didn't use the book once, although it could've helped. Great lectures, entertaining and caring. Radically honest and shares a lot of personal experience. Almost no work required and group study is encouraged. Tests all online and can be completed easily with the slides (posted online) and quizlet. Nicest prof, described by other profs as a puppy
Took his Sociology 120 online class and is probably the best thing I have ever done. Class is very easy as you follow the reading portions for each chapter. Homework is easy to complete, as well are the discussions. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Met him at these extra credit events and he was very respectful and caring.
Professor Soto is an amazing story teller, he makes the class fun! The papers are thought provoking and helps you learn about your 'craziness'. Quizzes are online, as long as you read you will do fine! The final is not cumulative! Do not miss lectures because he is strict on attendance. Overall, this class is a must take!
He's a great professor but this class is an easy A because all you do is a weekly quiz, and once in a while you write a short reflection in class, there's a total of 5. There is a total of 4 exams each worth 50 points. Towards the end you have a research project where you have to interview current Grossmont students or faculty members.
Just not a good professor - Avoid - Take another teacher
Downright gem of a human being. I took online course, and $40 dollar online hw/textbook. HW was a breeze, and the 3, 100 question tests we took: all answers were on a google/in the online textbook/common sense. Soto is an inspiring teacher, he teaches about modern issues, and I guarantee you won't leave his class without learning something of value
I absolutely love this course. Professor soto made it enjoyable. He really cares about his students and how well we learn the material. 100% recommend taking one of his classes. Test are also very similar to the study guides
Very caring teacher. He gives many many extra credit opportunities. You can only miss 3 class days or you will be dropped ( no exceptions ). Overall, this class is an easy A if you show up, listen to the lecture, and slightly study for each test.. you will be guarenteed an A if you do the extra credit.
Quizzes every week so make sure you show up to class. He isnt good at getting back to you if you message him, so utilize his office hours. Passionate about what he teaches so thats a plus.
Professor Soto is a great teacher. This is my second time taking sociology since I didn't do good on the last one with a different teacher and now I get to have a chance to get a good grade for this class. He actually cares for students and their grades and very passionate with his teaching to be inspirational. I would take his class again.
Avoid if you have conservative points of view
He is an excellent professor: lectures are short but straight to the point, he is a fair grader and he really cares about his students. Even when you don't have him as a teacher anymore, he still opens his office to people that just want to talk.
Such a great professor, and course. I would retake his class anytime! He is such a caring professor, and he is so passionate about his class that it makes it all the more interesting!
He is extremely funny and entertaining but most of all, he cares about your success. That is why he makes it easy. All quizzes are based on lectures and all the exams are exact copies of the study guides. He gives lots of extra credit and many easy points for simply showing up. I wish all professors were like him.
Mr. Soto is an amazing professor. He effortlessly breaks down sociology and gives out study guides that are EXACTLY what is on the exams. minimal quizzes. TONS of extra credit in case you miss a quiz. no cap on how many extra credit opportunities you attend. basically, if you need anything, he is always there to help. i left this class very happy.
Professor Soto is inspirational indeed. He gives amazing lectures about social views. Tests are take home tests. You get to decide whether to do an essay for part of your final project or do a group project instead. He really connects with his students.
Mr. Soto is one of the best professors that Ive ever had. I loved Sociology 120 so much that it was only right to take 125. Hes inspirational and caring for sure! Not too much homework (if any at all), quiz every week, 4 test and a project at the end of the semester (its anout yourself so its not hard at all). Julio feels like a true friend !
Fantastic professor and an even better human being! Very passionate and cares deeply which is very much so translated into his various lesson plans. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and gives you the support and encouragement necessary to do so. Just show interest, be present, and keep an open mind and your grade will reflect your effort!
Took the short term Soc. class. Great, caring and attentive professor. Graded everything promptly so you were always aware of your current grade. Gives fair feedback on weekly reflection papers so you can improve and receive full credit next time. Must read all of the chapters from the text book he provides (no cost) as they are whats tests.
He always made sure each student was understanding. After every test he let you write what he should do to help with the next test, and then what you can do to help your grade. If you didn't do well on test that's okay. The end of the semester project is worth 200 points. You make sure you do well on that project and it can boost up a letter grade.
The best sociology teacher Ive ever taken! He makes lectures super easy to understand and offers extra credit opportunities. If you go to class, tests will be a breeze. Hes really funny too and wants to help his students in every way he can! Take him you wont regret it :)
One of my most favorite professors Ive ever taken. I am learning so much in his class. He is such an amazing person and cares so much about students success. He also makes class so enjoyable and has great lectures. I wish there were more professors like him.
he's actually passionate about what he's teaching and makes it super interesting. take notes during lecture (he posts them) because thats where all the test material is found. he gives study guides that are exactly like the test. the only thing that bothered me was he yelled a lot when he got passionate. DO NOT let him catch you on your phone!!
Mr. Soto is one of the best professors I have had at Grossmont. I took the class bc I needed a class to meet a requirement. He does lecture a lot, but hes very interesting to listen to. The best part is he doesn't stress or focus on the grading aspect but that you actually learned something beneficial for yourself. Minimal assignments, just reading
amazing professor. After taking his class I feel less ignorant than when it started. Exams are the same as the study guide. Super passionate about what he talks about and lectures are super easy. You can tell this man loves what he teaches. Would take again, you don't get professors like him often
Professor Soto was very chill and honest. He told you all the info you need and his study guides were basically the exam. Just show up because he does weekly points on random days. Only had 3 exams and a final. Also some quizzes which were not hard at all. Definitely recommend taking him.
Professor Soto is the best. Lecture is never boring and his final presentation project is super easy and fun! For people who dont like public speaking (like me) its not bad at all. He is super supportive and its only a 2-5 minute speech about yourself and what you took from the class. Tests are EXACTLY like the study guides.
Professor Soto is a solid choice for Soc120. He lectures heavy, but they're interesting and engaging. He likes to relate topics to our current society and likes to teach about real life, the good and the bad. Tests are exactly the study guide. I feel like my time was cut short and he was ill prepared given the pandemic, but I'd take him again.
Strict. But easy course to pass. Be aware of + and - grades
Never meet such a passionate professor, he really loves his job. However, his lectures can sometimes get pretty boring. Overall his assignments are really easy and will highly recommend this class.
Professor Soto is very passionate about sociology which made the learning experience that much better. Talks about topics related to our current time which again makes the class interesting. Easy A as long as you do the homework and study for the quizzes. Would definitely take his class again.
I absolutely loved his class, I def recommend his class. Just do your work and it should be an easy A.
He will threaten to drop you with mere weeks until graduation regardless if youre doing well or not. Will not work with you or try to understand issues outside of the classroom. Took him online and dont understand how he has a 4.33. Asks for suggestions on making class better but will not pay attention to them. Be warned, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very nice! very caring! you can tell he truly loves sociology by the way he speaks about experiences he has encountered. I also admire that fact that he speaks on BLM, Stop Asian Hate, and police brutality on minorities. Definitely take his class, just make sure you attend every class because he marks you down for it!
Took before Covid. Worst professor EVER! Have no idea what he's talking about majority of class. group discussions and will pick on you. Insensitive to home issues. will give you an absence with a legitimate excuse. Drops after 3 unattended courses.
Where to begin. He isnt afraid to drop you for lack of attendance regardless if theres only a week left and you have an A in the class, he will spam you with emails if you dont do assignments the day theyre assigned, this class was supposed to be about marriage but he turned it into a race lecture. Requires you to join 15 minutes before start.
When I was reading his rates I saw how confusing it can be to someone who has never taken him. So I'm going to be super honest, take him, trust me. He was really kind, not a lot of HW, lectures were very interesting, talks about real-world problems, and he will ALWAYS help you if you ask. Trust me and take his class, you won't regret it
I loved this class and found it easy. He lays out the class so that there are no surprises, and you learn so much. There is a moderate amount of reading and videos to watch, but even the short summer session class was not overwhelming. I can't wait to take another class taught by him!
Took an interim course. Class was very condensed, so there were only six days total without an assignment due. There were ten units under the modules, mostly reading with a couple videos, documentaries, and podcasts to watch/listen to. Very interesting class, would not recommend if you have a busy schedule.
This was an excellent professor. Very understanding of issues one might have. Willing to make accomodations as is needed depending on your situation. The professor was also very helpful in reminding us that we had plenty of resources to get help if needed. Work was average difficulty, but tests are in abundance. Many discussions.
I would definitely recommend Professor Soto if history is not your strength. The material he lectures is based off of past and current events. Be prepared for long lectures but also to not be afraid to share your opinion. He is a very understanding teacher who wants you to learn the actual material and not just receive a grade. Awesome teacher!!
Professor Soto was pretty chill. There were a lot of movies to watch, but it was about a small number of assignments in the week for you to catch up in. Always checked in with his students and provided reminders for deadlines to make sure we got credit for the work. Great teacher! Definitely recommend taking him.
Engaging lectures, be ready to be open minded. He does talk a-lot but it is only because he is very passionate about teaching. He is open to all questions and encourages discussions.
Excellent professor very caring person worried about students all the time. Very understanding of issues one might have. Willing to make accommodations as is needed depending on your situation. The professor was also very helpful in reminding us that we had plenty of resources to get help if needed. PARTICIPATION MATTERS GET READY TO READ
Amazing professor! He truly cares about his students and is willing to make accommodations for you if necessary. He wants his students to pass so he offers extra credit to help. Tons of reading each week with a discussion or quiz. Three exams and the final is made up of all the tests combined. Definitely recommend this professor!
Prof Soto made sociology interesting and is very passionate about teaching. I recommend taking the class online as being in person is almost the same thing. Quizzes and tests were simple, he goes over them and whatever he talks about it's on there. Caring man, well respected. A simple easy soc class for you.
Prof Soto is alright, he is very passionate about teaching. He is very caring, respectful, and understanding. The discussions are very interesting and fun. Overall, he is alright.
If your here wondering if his a good professor to take for sociology... this is your sign TAKE HIM! The work he gives out is very easy and manageable and he doesn't put an overload of stress on you. He answers emails on good timing and he cares a lot about his students. Easy A. Highly recommend him you will not regret it!
The best class I've ever taken, this professor is incredibly kind and understanding, with a deep passion for sociological topics. Good grader, accessible work, and frequently checks in on his students, giving them opportunities to make up work. He sends regular emails about assignments as reminders which is very helpful! Would totally take again.
Professor Soto was super caring and understanding. I missed a couple of assignments and he didn't mark them as late because I emailed him. His work wasn't too difficult.
Very entertaining at first! But as the semester progresses he often talks over students and gaslights individuals about deadlines; not receptive to proof of original statement. His opinion of you can change in a second, so stay on his good side. TLDR; Pros: entertaining, passionate, Cons: egotistical
I loved this professor, he is incredibly understanding and you can tell he has a huge passion for sociology and making sure his students are intrigued by the class. He is an easy grader, checks up on students frequently, and gives lots of opportunities to help your grade. His usually pretty energetic and entertaining during his lectures.
Very easy and informative class. Professor Soto is funny and caring towards his students, despite what some people say. He truly believes in what he is teaching and wants students to feel the same way through his encouragement of discussion. Assignments were straightforward and not super time-consuming and quiz questions were given ahead of time.
I am so honored to have taken Sociology 120 with Professor Soto. I enjoyed learning about sociology in his class. He is super caring and hilarious. He keeps his lectures entertaining but also very thoughtful. If you take his class, you will learn so much about sociology and have the best time learning it. Thank you, Professor Soto!
Professor Soto is the best instructor for Sociology 114. His classes are very easy and relaxed. Watching the videos he provides helps you understand the material, and there are opportunities for extra credit, which makes it easier to achieve an A grade. You should definitely take his class! ;)
Attendance is mandatory. He will check up on you if you keep missing class. His lectures are interesting but some may find it boring if you aren't interested in sociology. He has little homework that he checks. The class can contain controversial topics, so if you aren't open-minded pick another professor.
The irony of taking a SOC class taught by someone who seems to lack the most basic social empathy! You'd think a professor who teaches about societal systems, inequality, and human behavior would have the slightest bit of compassion or understanding. Dropped w/o a single warning or email after being sick for a week, & emailed him prior. Don't take!
Professor Soto was an incredible teacher. His materials were interesting and relevant, and his delivery was taken well by the students who are interested in learning something in his class. I loved having him as my professor a couple semesters ago. I'll never forget him!
he's an amazing teacher, really caring and likes to privately message ppl who are struggling, he's really funny and his lectures never seem to bore me as not only is the material interesting but he's such a loud and entertaining person in general. one negative thing to note for the shy awkward people is that he occasionally does group assignments
Easy class but don't speak up if you're not extremely liberal. No joke spent 45 minutes one class comparing Trump to Hitler and complaining about Elon Musk. As a result of his anti-republican tangents we got a few days behind on lectures. He would often shut down opposing ideas but still the easiest A if you don't miss class.
DO NOT TAKE. Class is easy as well as the lectures. He is a very tough grader and will SPAM and harass you with constant “friendly” reminders of due dates. He's a psychopath and passive agressive, definitely not a good person or professor.
Got so behind on lectures due to constant ranting about the current administration that we had to watch a movie and read two modules in the last week before the final. He's fun and entertaining at first but quickly shows how performative it is as the semester progresses. Dropped a third of students a month before the semester ended for attendance
Avoid taking this class with THAT instructor, there are many more courses with similar topics such as Chicano/Chicana Perspective. Professor Soto lacks empathy and will make your semester so hard if he doesn't like you. Don't take. Hilarious but not in a good way.👎
It's rare to find a caring, influential, and motivational professor these days, but Professor Soto checks all the boxes. SOC/ETHN 114 was a class I looked forward to, his lecturing style was clear, engaging, and not overwhelming. I recommend taking this class but be ready to put in the work, it's not all on the professor.
(SOC 150) Prof Soto is very passionate about this topic and caring about his students. Lots of reading/watching videos & movies every week. Pretty much every assignment is a 1-2 page reflection on the material, which I found tiring and boring over time but it's pretty easy otherwise. Otherwise, I found the class very interesting and informative :)
Professor Soto is a great. He cares about your understanding in this class which I feel is really important with this subject. Attendance is mandatory and he will let you know. His tests are easy and he let's you have one page of notes so if you fail .. thats a you problem. If you're looking to just relax and not do anything this aint your class.
His online class is straight forward, do the reading to do the homework. Writing reflections does get tiring but the lecture itself is really interesting and you learn so much. The deadlines for the homework are what got overwhelming but aside from that he does well in responding and is super understanding.
Good professor overall but is very stern with his beliefs so if he doesn't agree with something you write down he won't give you full credit, but all work is super easy and test are also easy, basically gives you answers and questions for the test, should take class for an easy A.
