sucks.......just points at the slides like a **** & doesnt know the answers m
He is an extremely helpful and caring professor. He makes time for his students and makes sure things are clear and understandable. He is a great teacher to have and he is highly recommended
he have too much to teach that he doesn't even know how to teach. He can't evev relates his teaching to something big that everyone can picture it. i was bored to death in his class. he just brags and brags about his phd which he got it from uc berkeley
Dr. Soto is one of the few professors who is actually interested in his students succeeding..I found him to be very nice and helpful.
Once you figure out how he'll test you the class is easy. Gotta know the material. Real nice during office hours.
He taught bio 3 the first time. His tests were difficult and specific. He cares about the students success alot and he was holding study Q&A sessions for us before tests. I didn't pass, but I think he's still a good teacher.
Omg...i say he's helpful(i think), but his test is so hard. His stuff doesn't relate to the test. It was a feeling of execution waiting for the returned test. This professor shows caring but i mean his teaching was completely beyond the comprehension.
Insane and super hard tests. He doesn't even know how to teach his students. The slides are completely irrelevant to the tests. Mosts of the time doesn't really know what he's talking about. Tries too hard to make himself sound intelligent

His tests are extremely hard. His lectures are extremely boring. He never gives any meaningful feedback. Most of the class is failing, but he is careless. DON'T TAKE HIM, YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Worst teacher ever!!!! Class very boring and does not correlate to test material, test are extremly hard and very confusing. Know his material very well but does not know how to teach to students. Dont take his class biggest regret youll make.
Danger!!!!Danger!!!! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
I took his class Spring'04 and I think he's a really good teacher. He knows what he's talking about. However what people say about his tests are true; they are hard. Just keep up with the reading and you'll do fine.
I also took Soto Spring '04. He is a very hard-nosed teacher who provides tests of the utmost difficulty. It wouldn't surprise me if he played favorites, but fortunately for me I was on his good side. Conclusion - those who suck up get good grades.
Soto was challenging.. but was one of the best profs. i have ever had. His lectures DID correlate with the exams, but you have to REALLY KNOW ur material and read between the lines. 2 words for u: RESCUE POINTS. Don't give up on the class. good luck!
I DROPPED THE CLASS in the middle of the semester... couldn't do it... any more questions? He teaches like we're professors or grad students. I don't know what it is, he's hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM, there are easier teachers out there. find THEM, NOT HIM.
Exams are HARD and grading subjective. Lectures were useless (but attendance was beneficial cause of quizzes or extra exam points). Self study skills were a must!! Rescue questions and extra credit are the key for an A and his lecture notes are golden!
Tests had nothing to do with the lectures. Grading was abnormally difficult considering this was a GE class. Prof must have thought we were all majoring in bio. Not very helpful or good at teaching. I STRONGLY recommend not taking any of profs classes.
He's a lab kinda guy, not a teacher.

I would say that after you take this class, you would ask yourself why are you being born to this cruel world. SOTO is a mad guy. Dont' take him. He thinks that we are his tiny parasites in, and will get what he said. After i take his class, i just want to jump Golden Gate. But thank god i didn't.
BY FAR THE HARDEST TEACHER ON CAMPUS !!!
Got by w/ B's on all his exams. I figured out how to get an A. His main points are on lecture slides. If he spends a lot of time talkin bout it then he's gonna ask a question bout it on the exam. This class will definitely help for future Bio classes. Rescue points bumped me up to an A.
You know how BIO1 & 2 were similar? How the tests were simple & easy & basically just memorization? BIO3 is nothing like that. The way we're taught in BIO1 & 2 doesn't prepare you for difficulty of BIO3. I know it's SUPPOSED to be harder, but it's IMPOSSIBLY harder. I study A LOT, yet only have a C-
He tries to give you too much information and he gives it too you all in little pieces. Like a puzzle, you have to figure out how/where the pieces fit. This is challenging. As far as teachers go, I think that he knows his stuff, but cannot present it so that it is well understood. I wouldnt recommend him.
Lectures are confusing and exam questions are not clear.
really a bad teacher. exams not clear at all, can't even explain or teach.
I disagree to most of these ratings. One of the best professors I ever had. Helpful.Test questions are research-based and challenging, but as long as you tape-record lecture and study, you'll do well.Lecture and book go hand-in-hand pretty well.Great guy, cancer section is interesting.Responsive to students' questions. Lectures are well-organized.
I agree that he is a difficult professor, but he is very knowledgeable and clear as to what's on the exams. Must go to lectures, follow ppt slides, office hours, and read book on your own. He is really nice and always willing to answer questions no matter how fundamental it may be. I got an A, so believe me folks, it's possible.

I think Dr. Soto gets a hard time just because he is such a good teacher and a lot of students aren't used to thinking critically. He is always available for help in his course and his teaching method will set you up for success in future courses. He is not easy, but this is what you are a scientist for, to learn!
He will help you out as much as he can with extra credit points and you have a choice to make up for an exam by taking a cumulative final.. I was struggling at first but then ended up with a B+. :)
He is a very unhappy man. He actually threw a temper tantrum when I went to speak with him about a grade. He tried to intimidate me by yelling and ripping papers from my hands and telling me to get out of his office when I asked him a question about my grade. He is biased and demands respect, rather than trying to earn it. He is a smart person.
Class is very easy and you actually learn something. Posts exactly what he wants on his website for papers and allows you to redo assignments with his corrections for full credit. The research proposal is long, but you learn how to do it and if you follow the guidelines it should be no problem.
He is a horrible professor. He has an attitude problem. Also, the positive raters sound very similar, which makes me suspicious of some of these ratings. He often talks in circles and his exams are really difficult for a bio INTRO class. I don't think he understands the concept of respect. He demands it, but does not deserve it.
Bad man. He has a bad temper and definitely has favorites. If you are a favorite, great, you will get and A and will get invited to his house for dinner. If not, you will be marked down for things that were correct and will not be flexible. He is unapproachable for questions and will get ANGRY with you for voicing an opinion. AVOID HIM!
He knows his stuff well but doesn't explain them well (accent & his methodology). I have to do A LOT of self-studying. Not an easy class--lots of materials and difficult exams. He does have attitude problems. I do well in the class but for whatever reasons, he hates me and tries to put me down in front of others.
An intelligent person, but he does not convey his knowledge to the students in class. Has attitude problems and does not like to be questioned AT ALL. Demands you respect him, but doesn't give you a good reason to. Hope that he likes you, otherwise you won't do very well. Go to every class and get the participation points.
this class is easier than bruck's. although the midterms are all essay forms, the key is to jot down what comes up in your mind and move on. dotn' think too much in one problem or else u end up getting stuck. final is multiple choice, it's easy. go to class to get participation points tho. just don't pull an all-nighter. and u'll do fine.
Dr. Soto is a superb instructor. He demands excellence, but he delivers it too. Office sessions are great. Active discussions on cell biology among students with Dr. Soto moderating them are conducive to learning the material. It is prudent to do the problems in the book. Essay let you strut your stuff - if you've done the work.
class is diffucult, but professor is available to help
He is very helpful when you go to office hours and he seemed nicer once he knows who you are. I like his powerpoint lectures & the fact that his exams are challenging. He does try to make life easier on his students by giving extra work for points and being flexible for the final. I highly recommend taking a class with him.
The lectures are interesting. He is an okay teacher, Bruck is probably a better lecturer, but Soto's exams are easier. However, you don't really have enough time to get "perfect score" on the exams, but the questions, but they are straight out of the lectures. Hard to get an A, but real easy to get a B. Don't piss him off during his office hours.
May know a lot but doesn't know how to deliver it to students. Never explain anything clearly if question is asked then why go to his office hours. Expects you to know everything already, that's the only way to do well in class. I didn't learn anything from him, I learned on my own reading different books. He is one of the worst teacher in SJSU. G
taken bio3 w/ this dude. not looking forward to take bio135 w/ this dude this spring. i hope he won't pms in this one.
Bad instructor! Exams are horrible. Bad attitude. His accent is kinda bad too. Avoid him!
he needs to get over himself..he's really not that great..

Does not know how to teach. Disorganized and rude. Expects you to learn things and test on things that he does not cover or tell you to prepare on own.
The first class, he told a student who ask him a question to bring a recorder.Lost many times his temper in front of the class, and blaming the students for not showing up during office hours.Good Luck!

He is a little rough around the edges, but at the end of the semester he really loosened up. He definitly went out of his way for us by offering the comprehensive test for our benefit. I didn't like him at first, but he really is a nice guy, and a good teacher. Don't let what people say form your judgement about him, you have to give him a chance.
he gives extra credit but does add them to your final grade or he claims to "forget" to add them! very unorganized! you will need to check all your tests to make sure he grades them correctly.
Dr soto want to help students, but he has high expectations!! i do not recommend him for undergrad students..!!! i studied hard for this class and i got a C!!! most people failed the class..!! the tests are EXTREMELY HARD..! even if u study and memorize everything in the book, u still can not answer the questions completely...!!!also very unorganiz
He expects alot out of you, but doesn't live up to what he is supposed to. Always "forgets" to add the extra credit. The comprehensive final was supposed to replace our lowest test score, he "forgot" to do that when calculating the grades. He is the worst teacher! UGH! Hopefully SJSU will get ride of him before we get to Bio 135.
Tests are EXTREMELY HARD!!!!! reading book and notes are useless!!! believe ME!!! he might seems nice and want to help you get a good grade, but at the end, no mercy!!! GOOD luck...
SERIOUS Napoleon syndrome! This teacher pretty much caused me to hate this subject. I don't understand why he continues to teach, he has no patience during his lectures, and he gives you an attitude everytime you ask a question. He has no respect for his students, and he will make your semester miserable.
Dr. Soto expects a lot out of his students. He is not a mean guy. He is truly interested in the well-being of his students and only asks for your respect. Dr. Soto can't handle students that are rude and have no sense of how to approach a professor. His class is not impossible as many students make it out to be. Class attendance is mandatory.
This guy is a joke. Even if you show up to all the classes, take lists of notes and do well on the hw and tests, you'll still get a C. Unfair grading method and is extremely biast towards students. You have to seriously kiss some...to do well otherwise he'll dimiss you as below average. DOWN WITH SOTO THE JOTO!
I heard all the horror stories before taking Soto's class. Yes it was hard, and he does expect A LOT
I heard all the horror stories before taking Soto's class. Yes it was hard, and he does expect A LOT for a lower div course. But he's not so bad people! My advise is record lectures, know his power point slides in detail, and see him during office hours. It will indeed consume your study time. Best of luck to all!
Like what others have said, this class is difficult but not impossible. Dr Soto, however, is a great professor despite what everyone says. If you attend his office hours, and he sees that you are making an effort, it will reflect in your overall grade in the course. Class participation and attendance are a must to do well in this class!
Regardless what some posters are saying, Soto really is a jerk. However, you CAN get an A in this class. I got an A, but it was more regurgitation than comprehension. In any case, like someone said: 1. Type your notes in the powerpoint slides. 2. Print these out and study them - this is your Bio 3 bible. If you can do that, you're sure to do well
I have to admit Dr. Soto is as hard as Dr. Bruck. Soto requires pure comprehension and Bruck asks for complete memorization. I failed both because no matter how hard I tried I just can't pass them. This is the saddest day of my life. However, you can get biol 3 in community college and it's alot ezier. Trust me!
I just dropped this class and Ill take it at a community college if I take it at all, this prof is a jurk. I heard about him but I did'nt believe the comments were valid. Now I know he is a idiot. I reccomend that u take him if u want to be turned off to biology. This guy could make anything boring.
Dr. Soto teaches as bad as he looks. I received a C in BIOl3 a few years ago. After taking this class, I switched my major. All I have to say is that if you suck at something (eg. biology).. then you shouldn't waste your time investing in it. In other words, QUIT majoring in biology or any science field, if you can't pass a lower division course.
Dr. Soto is an excellent teacher. I had him for Cell Bio and Molecular. He is challenging but fair and passionate, not impossible because I'm a procrastinator. but I still got solid A's in both classes.. and NO.. i did not kiss ass.. just crammed like hell. You need to UNDERSTAND the concepts. Show up in class and understand the power point slides.
Dr. Soto is the best professor for Biol 3. I learn a lot from Dr. Soto. He made Biol 3 interesting and fun. Just study hard, listen well to lectures, good at office hours for helping students. He is cool and great.
Dr Soto has an attitude problem. I tried my hardest but he seemed uninterested in helping me. He thinks that if the class is hard, it's the student's fault, but I know that others in the class feel the same way I do, and we were all really put off by this guy. Glad the class is over.
Disorganized lectures, althrough it is hard to name it lectures. His teaching level is poor, jumps from slide to slide, no introduction, no descriptions, no sharing lab experience. Looks like he is there by accident... But as he says he has TENURE so why should he care.
He cant teach!!!!
Just plain bad!
He seems to get frustrated with students too easily and is not willing to help you. Never in his office hours and very negative towards anybody who is not perfect.
Soto is a great teacher! He is clear (except for his accent sometimes) and will explain any concepts you want to know to you. Great in office hours and very approachable! He is a wonderful teacher and his Bio. 3 class was not hard if you put in the effort and studied- and I procrastinated and still got and A, its not impossible.
talks with an accent, confuses words here and there. very generous grader IF you talk to him. gets ticked off very easily.tests are very different, mostly problem solving. bring your common sense to class.
Sometimes he can have a bias, but he can be good to you if you are serious enough. The thing here is that hee is just too strict, but his sternness sometimes helps you in the long run.
He is boring, not konw how to teach.
He is not a really bad professor with respect to his teaching, but he is my new definition of a bad professor with respect to his characters. His class is okay and can be interesting if you pay attention. I was among the firsts to take the new 1AB sequence he created:NOT enjoyable. Recommend reading textbooks and study group. Exams require thoughts
He's the most disorganized prof I've ever met AND w/ an attitude! Not helpful when you go to him during office hours (he's rarely there). If not for study groups, I wouldn't have passed this class! Read the book too! And when he says something that contradicts w/ what's in the book put it on the exam coz he's ALWAYS right! SO happy am done with 96!
This class is now called Biology 1A and 1B. I took his experimental class and it pretty sucks he's still here to teach 1A and 1B. Horrible teacher, exams are all essay-format and hard. Even after studying my butt off, I only managed a B-
Late to office hour appointments, incredibly condescending to students, and is completely unprofessional. Exams are essay format and are incredibly difficult without a study guide or a study lecture. When he is the main professor, though, his concepts are easy to understand - Pretty much the only upside to having him as a professor.
the class is overwhelming as it is and plus having a professor like soto is awful. he's strict on everything and also isn't that helpful during office hours. all his exams are in short answer essay format. the people who grades the exam are very picky on the answers. overall he is just a bad bio professor ever.
Be patient with him. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and may give you attitude from time to time. READ THE BOOK PRIOR TO COMING TO CLASS! For those of you who feel that biology is a second language to you, his lectures willB 10x more clear. The tests are difficult and in essay format. Study everything in all details! He's rude as hell! goodluck
His tests are hard so come to class and record the lecture. Never on time to office hours and very rude. Acts like he's way above his students and gives you attitude. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting in the class because he'll run after the semester's over and won't let students see their grade.
His tests are hard so come to class and record the lecture. Never on time to office hours and very r.ude. Acts like he's way above his students and gives you attitude. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting in the class because he'll run after the semester's over and won't let students see their grade.
Do NOT rely on powerpoints alone. Record the lectures or you'll miss a lot of key concepts discussed. Activity - ask questions & clarify concepts. Lab - remember the purpose of lab & its procedures for lab exam. He creates hypothetical situations for lecture exams & expects you to apply the concepts learned.
Not a very good professor at all. I'm not just saying this due to him being extremely tough but there are many factors that contribute: he is very disrespectful to people even when there is no reason to be, he says he'll post activity answers and never does, he is rarely available for office hours and never responds to e-mails. Good luck!
He is the worst teacher i ever had. so rude! tells you that he is helpful but he is lying! favors students who know things already. reading the book is pointless, record his lectures, and understand them. the tests are essay format, have nothing to do with what he lectured. i feel sorry you for having to take this class :(
Yes Dr. Soto is hard, but that's what makes him a good professor. He doesn't just hand out A's, and you'll need to put in hours to understand the concepts. Read prior to class, IT DOES HELP. Record his lectures and know EVERY detail about every topic he covers. This will also mean using textbook and outside resources to understand his exams.
Worst teacher ever.Only teacher I've had a problem with.Read the book and record the lectures. It doesn't matter b/c he plays favorites and gives passing grades to students he knows. Never there during office hours, rude if he is, and does NOT add in your e.c., new exam scores. He pretends to be gone so students cant talk to him about their grade.
One word: tenure. It doesn't really matter what you want to say about him. Having tenure allows him to be lazy and disregard students.
Instructor is not helpful at all. What I found most helpful was taking notes in class and then sitting and reading the sections in the textbook. I felt very uncomfortable with his love of tenure and his almost bullying and disregard of students but after speaking with the Department Chair I found out that he can't hide behind tenure.
Patience is the key with him and this class. He's tough but it makes you that much smarter! Record each lecture, rewrite notes, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't even think about procrastinating. Exams are based off lecture, not the textbook. Read for background knowledge but don't use it for study material.
This class is difficult, but not impossible if youâ??re willing to put in the work. Exams are all essay so you need to really understand the material and be able to communicate it in the same level of detail as he presented it in class. Attend every class & record the lectures. Heâ??s not as bad as everyone thinks, but he'll make you earn your grade!
Difficult class, requires a lot of studying for the essay exams, yet I made it out alive with a B. Soto is a difficult grader, his exams are hard. Semester was hell on earth.
He's a great professor! He's tough because this is class is the basic foundation for all the other classes. Don't be intimidated by him. Make sure you go to class, keep up with the lectures, and have a positive outlook in this class. Do all that and you'll be fine!I worked my butt off for my A so it's not impossible!
Hard to understand sometimes. Pay attention to questions asked in class. These show up on exams. Go to office hours to make sure you understand the main concepts.
I heard horror stories about this class, but I actually really enjoyed it. The concepts were interesting. His tests are really hard, though. All written, so you have to know the material well. He has a little bit of a rough and blunt exterior, but he really wants you to pass his class.
Very difficult professor, so get ready to work your butt off for this class. RECORD HIS LECTURES. Textbook was useless. Do not rely on powerpoint slides! He comes off as rude, but he really does care about his students and wants them to pass the class. Plays favorites!! HW assignments were not helpful and time consuming! FORM A SOLID STUDY GROUP!!
DO not buy the book, go to lecture, write down all the questions asked in class...these are his questions on exams. know the material backwards and forwards. go to his office hours, ask specific questions and he will tell you want you NEED to know, dont ask, "do we need to know this"
Incredibly unorganized, do not take anything he says without a grain of salt. Schedules are completely disregarded and he goes back on his word very often. Classes, labs, and activities are canceled at random without any information being sent out. Good at teaching material and responding to questions, but terrible at organization and grading.
Disrespectful to (and feared by) students. Don´t take it personally. His tests usually are about what he cares (cell and dev. bio).Don´t take him for basic bio, he hates it and you can notice it. Doesn´t give grades back on time, nor you can study from them. Doesn´t always reply to emails so office hs are your best chance to get a good grade.
This professor is always on edge so watch out and don't ask stupid questions or try to answer questions that you don't really know the answer to! He dismissed two people from class early for talking or texting. He puts questions on the test that he never even taught the class. Not much homework and the tests are really hard to study for. #dontdoit
He's a poor teacher because he is disorganized. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't seem to care about his students at all. He has a very poor attitude as though we are bothering him when we ask for clarification or questions. Excuse me, but that's his job! Very snotty. Should probably be in a research lab where no one can "bother" him.
Do exactly what he says in 100W class. Take really well notes and you will get an A. Make sure of this when youre doing youre references assignment and the references in the literature review. He is really picky on that so make it perfect. Other than that, be extremely specific for the topics list and make the deadlines for all assignments.
He's an extremely critical grader and not afraid to embarrass you in front of everyone, which he did to several other students in the writing class. I got an A, so it's doable, but he's hard to get ahold of and a tough grader. If you don't fulfill his requirements to the very letter,y you will get marked down one or two full grades. Yikes.
His instructions are confusing and disorganized. He will provide written instructions, but he might tell you something different later in class. Ask him anything if you are unsure. He is a critical grader. Reference assignment -if you do not use single-space, he WILL take off 1 pt. for each double space. For any long papers, have someone proofread.
Hard to learn from a wanna-be dictator. Stay away. Pros: gets you prepared for competitive career and outside world. Cons: Doesn't really care about the student. Hard to talk to for advice. Kind of only really cares about himself and what he's doing. Looks like it's starting to backfire on him.
Terrible instructor due to his lack of instructions, cancelling class frequently, and looking down on students who comment on his teaching style. Took him over a month to grade an exam (that he changed into a take home exam because he cancelled class the day of the exam) only to blame almost the entire class for failing.
He is the worst teacher I have ever taken. He doesn't care about his students, doesn't give any proper instructions, he tells you one thing in one class session and something ells the next class session. He is really rude, makes you fell stupid and really puts students down. He loves failing students since he is fine with signing the papers to drop
Doesn't care about his students. He's never really available for you outside of class or through emails, even during office hours. When you do finally talk to him he talks down on you. Makes you feel pretty low. He gave assignments one or two days in advances at times. His instructions were never clear, always told us contradicting things.
He is a very tough grader and was never available for office hours. Never replied to emails. I never got a an F on a paper until I took his class due to his lack of specific directions. Stay away if you can. Way too much work compared to the other 100W classe
So many papers, to READ. This is cell biology folks. Dr Soto doesn't hand out A's until the end of the semester. Tough grader on first 2 midterms to set a fire under your ass. If you don't crack under the pressure and just hang in there he will ease up on the grading.
Dr. Soto at first was a very intimating man. However as the semester went on, I realized he's just pushing you to do better. He gives a lot of advice and feedback on your work so you can improve. If you're not passing the class then it's honestly just you.
Must've turned himself around this semester because he was a really excellent teacher. Very patient, gave good feedback. If you don't like his feedback, suck it up, don't take it personally- he's trying to help you and wants you to succeed. Even asked students at the end of the semester if he held up his bad rep and he definitely didn't.
Complete 180 in his teaching style for the first time ONLY MC exams, extra points & is curving the final grades. Heard negative things for YEARS about Dr. Soto even from my colleagues that took his class 5 years ago. Go to class, study hard. I am considering asking him for a letter of rec, & he is one of my fav professors at SJSU, he cares a lot.
Makes grading guidelines very clear. His feedback on your assignments, while they can be blunt, are made that way to help you improve your writing. He's not going to hold your hand throughout the writing process but will help you once you have your own ideas. Only real flaw is that he doesn't always reply to emails promptly (never on weekends).
It is not the easiest class or the friendliest teacher but he does give a really good feedback and is fair. You get what you work for. Overall learned a lot and would recommend.
He cares about his student, wants them to do better. Sometimes it can come off as rude but in the end, you do come out of this class learning a lot. Highly recommended.
Go to lecture, otherwise you will not understand the slides. His teaching format has changed from years past, he makes it an easy course if you show up. Exams were multiple choice and some wording was hard to understand but if you take good notes during lecture and memorize, you will do fine. Mostly memorization, not much critical thinking req
He changed his ways teaching this class 180. He says you need the text book, however all his exams are made from his lecture slides. If you come up and take really good notes, you could pass with an A. 3 exams no final + 1 presentation. Last exam is hard because theres so much material, but its an easy class if you come .
If you are a biol major, you should definitely take dev biol. It was one of the most profound classes that I have taken at sjsu. Although the topics are dense, Dr. Soto does an amazing job of explaining each concept clearly. Don't be afraid if asking him to repeat something you don't get. Once he explain a research to us 4 times :D always RECORD!
He might be scary at first but he's not. If you want to be a better writer take his class.
While this is a "do the work and you get an A" class, you still have to do it right. Once you get your ideas in order, writing itself just takes time. If you take a while to write, get ready to put a good amount of time into the class. Make sure you get the rough drafts done on time, he gives you an A if you correct everything for the final draft.
Dr. Soto is a wonderful teacher and person. He has straightforward grading system, and helps provide meaningful feedback on projects. His 100W assignments helped me learned a lot about scientific research and proposal writing. The in-class presentations seemed intimidating but helps build confidence through public speaking exercises. Recommended!
Dr. Soto was great. Do as he says, follow directions for assignments carefully and make sure your writing is revised and follows HIS guidelines and you will get an A. A lot of work, so you have to work for it. Not hard just a lot.
Not gonna lie, this class was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. You REALLY need to put in a lot of effort into this class. DO NOT leave the essays and projects for the last minute, you'll regret it. I got an A in the class only because I busted my ass working for it. He's really scary but its worth holding back the tears for some advice
Dr. Soto is a wonderful professor. He truly cares about his students. Yes, he is strict; but it is for the best. If you are looking to slack off and get by, his classes are not for you. You genuinely need to try and put effort in, he definitely notices those that are trying. I recommend him for 100W, it wont be easy but hes the best for that class
Dr Soto is a fantastic teacher. I found him professional and helpful. He is very clear about what he wants. Listen carefully and do exactly as is asked and you will get an A. He wont hold your hand, once given instructions he expects you to work autonomously. The content of his class is invaluable for a future career in research or academia.
Dr. Soto was really intimidating and hard to approach for advice but he still helped a lot with my scientific writing. There are three main assignments: literature review, research proposal, and presentation. Put in work, just follow the feedback he gives you exactly and it's an easy A.
Soto's BIOL 100W class was incredibly hard. His "feedback" on papers weren't really feedback and he was very dismissive/rude. Instructions were always unclear and if you want him to specify, he'll talk down on you. Overall don't take the class if you don't want a professor who makes you feel low about yourself.
This professor is very knowledgable, but impossible to approach for help. He is very rude and doesn't listen to concerns about grading. I never felt comfortable reaching out for help or clarification. I would avoid this professor at all costs.
For 100W If you don't do assignments the way he wants you to exactly he will give you a zero. So be aware of that when writing. He is very strict and doesn't like people asking questions and when you don't understand he gets very irritated so make friends and stick together! Just do your assignments, turn them in on time and stay out his aim.
Where do I begin ? Dr. Soto is the toughest professor I've EVER had. First, he is very STRICT when it comes to grading. IF it's not done exactly how he wants. You'll fail an assignment. He's also not understand. AT ALL. No matter the circumstances. Very short and anxiety provoking. I do not look forward to his classes.
One word for this professor: RUN. He is the absolute worst person I had ever met. First of all, he is very unapproachable. He makes no accommodations for any student under any circumstance. He has a very mean tone in his voice. He is very strict on everything and provides little to no feedback for students who does not follow his strict rules. RUN
Dr. Soto is definitely a strict teacher. You have to follow every single one of his criteria to succeed in his class. Your sentences have to be less than 22 words and you have to check all your papers for his unacceptable words. He doesnt give good feedback and wont repeat himself twice. So pay attention in class and make time to proofread!
Knows absolutely nothing about Biology! Looked totally lost, confused, unsure, and everyone in the lecture didn't understand anything he said. He would make up his own non-sense Biology terms and claimed everything in the book was wrong. Wonder why he's even a Biology professor when he knows nothing about it. Totally embarrassing! Don't take!
he has an attitude and is very condescending. wont repeat things more than once and if you miss his target even by a sliver he will grill you for it and penalize your grade heavily.
Got an A only because I spent hours checking every. single. sentence. to make sure it was less than 22 words. He is extremely unapproachable and will talk you down if you ask ONE question for clarification. Only good side was that he gave you feedback so you can perfect your paper for an A.
Worst professor ever! He possesses limited knowledge of biology, but holds his students to high expectations. His lectures are just worthless as nobody can understand what he says. Then he blames students for not studying hard enough and not listening in class. Does not care about his students at all. Do not take!
Kim Jong-un would be a kinder professor. That is not an understatement, if you want to experience hell on earth and literal tyranny please join this class. Be my guest, he is cruel. I would never say such harsh things but he is terrible. Not even as a professor but as human being. I know, it's harsh but it is true. Unfair and ridiculous grader.
DO NOT EVER TAKE BIOL100W WITH HIM. his expectation of assignments was not clear, and definitely not a good place for any accommodation. super tough grader that marks you down for every word, every comma you got wrong. This class with him is just absurd!
A lot of people think professor Soto is mean because he can come off as blunt, but if you take the time to get to know him through office hours and meetings he is actually really nice and makes it clear that he wants his students to succeed. I had him for both 100w and 105 and got an A+ in both. As long as you do what he asks for you should do well
Dr. Soto is quite the legend at SJSU, he is respected and feared by many bio students. He knows his stuff extremely well, he treats his students like adults and expects them to behave as such. If you are there to learn youll have an easy time. No filler, he just wants the answer. Get prepared to read papers as thats his favorite media to teach.
Do not take any of professor Soto's class. He is super rude and does not care for his students. He only lectures for 30 minutes and even that isn't enough information for his tests. This class involves a lot of self-studying and he is completely unreliable at all times even during the week of the exam.
Be CAREFUL when taking him. His class was only half lecture and half activities. I tried asking for help especially after first exam and he gave me attitude. I tried asking for help, and kept trying to not help me at all. I put all I had into this class and it's a complete waste for me. I would recommend Biol 105, BUT NOT with HIM.
He shows how a legendary scholar on papers can actually be one of the worst scholars. He can't articulate anything about biology at all, and will ramble about something random during class. Office hours are just useless, and he will just tell you to go home if you ask questions about biology. Very rude, clueless, and disrespectful professor!
Dr. Soto focuses on complementing his lectures with his heavy reading assignments. I originally wanted to give up on pursuing biology in general until I took his first course. This gentleman shows dedication to his students and definitely sheds a new perspective for those who have wavering doubt in the biology. Just do the tedious readings = A.
