Class is boring; Mid-term is killing; Final is just like a battle!
midterms hard... final same...class lecture not very useful...
avoid her....never answers questions she'll either say possible or maybe...
So boring, have no idea on what she is trying to say!!
tough tough professor, makes no sense, slow

slowslowslowslow
Ya, avoid this prof if possible, she couldn't have made microbi anymore boring..
TERRIBLE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
efficient teacher

Must avoid!!! Her class is like a talkshow with nothing but student input!!
Terrible! So boring, soooo slow, struggled to stay awake in class.
she shouldn't be teaching ppl at all!!
She was pretty good. She seemed to really like what she was teaching, and the course wasn't very hard.
"not very hard?" you must have been a genius then :) hehehe
Could not stay awake for this class, even if my freakin life depended on it. Wanted to die every time she took five minutes to walk across the hall to hand the microphone over to some attention starved keener.

Tries innovative ways of teaching, and has more student involvement than any other prof I've had at UBC
she reiterates what we've alrdy learned in high skool... when she doesn't know how to work the computer she says she's "computer illiterate when it comes to the Mac OS" while operating Windows XP
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. The fact that I can barely understand a word she says only makes it that much worse....
i very much doubt she has a teaching background; all she does is rehash the text in an illogical order. she is hard to understand and her overhead notes are hard--often impossible--to read.
Alright, if you are a first year, considering taking this course, stay far far away from benbaset. Her teaching is unclear and i actually think i would be better off teaching myself from the bluebook than going to class b/c she confuses me more.
This course is MEANT to be a weeder course - either you're a bio kind of person, or you're not. If you get it, you get it, if you don't, you shouldn't be taking biology! She's a decent teacher and has a passion for what she does. Enjoyed her class :)
ew stay far away from her!!!!!!
Very thorough in covering material. Good teaching method. Her main fault is in CLARITY. Her handwriting is only legible from the first row, and if so, only barely.
she is boring, her handwriting is impossible to read. she moves the over head way too fast,it almost impossible to write down everything, especially with her handwriting
omfg, you spend more time figuring out wtfh she wrote than paying attention or listening. >:(
stay away from her for your own sanity, an hour and a half with her is torture. she just spits out what the bluebook explains which she accompanies with her "handwriting"
The worst teacher ever. Get out fast if you have her. She is extremely unclear and unhelpful. Her class is also boring. If you want a decent grade take this course with someone else that makes more sense
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! PERIOD.

Dr. Benbasat's cool! She is a really hard marker though...
Just transfer if you get stuck with her. Or you will regret it. She is very unclear, hard to understand.
zzzzzzzzzzzzz boring zzzzzzzzzzzz. lemme emphasize on the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
hvnt had any exm w/ her yet so cant say how easy she is.but,i've been attending her class and kions class, just to compare. kion is iteresting and fun at times. but benbasat is VERY BORING. howevr she is very dtailed.. if u dont sleep she will do u good
wow...i've never gone through one class of biol112 without falling asleep (first class included)...some of the stuff she talks about is cool, but her notes are very good at all...
Hard course, but she was actually helpful if u need it.
She was very unclear, horrible notes and extremely boring. didnt make this hard class any easier
She spends too much time talking about her research & rarely discusses topics important to the course. B/C the midterms are multi-section, she needs to be more effective and precise on the topics she teaches. The PRS quizzes were at times helpful, but she mostly quizzed on info that she did you teach
She marked so hard on lab reports and always expected too much from very vague questions. Not recommended.
been her class for 3 months. couldn't understand a word. her writing are horrible. if you could get some other prof, go for him/her. Don't ever choose her class!!
shes super boring and she talks about her resaerch too much, she needs to stay focused! She will tell you to form study groups but BEWARE! if you work together she will take half your marks away for plagarism! its so stupid
the class is really interesting i thought, however, i dont think that the exams are well done, i dont like that it is a multiple choice exam. but, i didnt mind going to the lectures, i didnt think that they were all that boring, and i think that taking notes is really important to the course.
If you can take another prof. try to, it's a very difficult course, and needs a good prof in order to pass!
The exams are rough, all multiple choice, not really fair, its pretty much all or nothing..Her lectures can be really dry...dont work together on your assignments or atleast hand them in separately otherwise she'll think you're cheating..she is extremely helpful out of class though
Not a very good teacher at all. Confusing, jumps all over the place, writes way too fast. The course itself is fair and gives you a good chance to succeed, but she doesn't help your cause. Says the strangest things in class sometimes; you'll know what I mean.
She was definitely not good at lecturing. On the other hand, she was very good if you went to her office hours for help. If you do all the homework in this class there's no way you can get less than an A-. Easy course.
Was very very unclear. Was helpful at times. The course was interesting but listening to her wasn't.
bad lectures. interesting class but horribly organized. boring boring boring. teaching is all over the place. just read the green book and do the practice exams
Great teacher, knows her stuff well, and she's very nice to students. receptive to questions. Marking is extremely picky though so you'll need to learn a whole new level of accuracy and be VERY specific with your work.
nice prof, receptive to students but a hard marker.
This teacher drives me crazy! Her lectures are sooo boring and she is so awful in their delivery. I find her very irritating. Also, she doesn't present anything that's really relevant in terms of what we are tested on. She just talks about stupid things a fourth grader would know about.
wow, this prof has pages and pages of ratings... she must be either extremely good or extremely awful...i don't doubt for one second that the reason for these endless comments is because she's so SO boring its made her class and lectures unbearable.
well i wanna say she's a boring lecturer but another part of me doesn't think it's her fault b/c the course material is BORING! i like the fact that she always asks us if we have questions in class, it clears a lot of unclear concepts up. she talks really slowly so it's hard 2 miss wut she says in class but sometimes its hard to stay focused too.^^
Dr. Benbasat is an extremely helpful prof. She is always willing to help answer questions and also, stimulates us to think. I even ask her questions after the class is over, and she still replies. Final exam was tough, but overall the class was not bad.
Dr. Benbasat tries hard to get the student involved in lectures, especially this summer term.. students can't stand sitting in class for 3 excruciating hours studying about bacterial cells. Exams are brutal, but do-able (i guess, i jes finished the final awhile ago). Receptive to questions, available during office hours. Overall, a good prof, but
what can i say...her lectures are painstakingly boring! i fell asleep in that class soooo many times. she's a really nice prof but the exams are really tricky and the material taught is so dry. the only thing that made this class worthwhile was getting to watch the "realtime" animation clips.
With the given course material I guess she taught as best as she could. Class may be abit boring, but still more interesting than first year chem and physics. I didn't find the midterm or exam too hard...multiple choice for both.
A fair lecturer, doesn't give too many hard PRS questions. Covered all material in time and still had time for movies and demos. Though must warn you, wesb theatre is the perfect place to sleep; benbasat's voice is the perfect lullaby.
very unhelpful and particular about the way she marks. To do well you must follow the way she does things exactly, and not have your own way of doing things.
Found her to be friendly and helpful when approached. Can be very picky with some details but there is no hidden agenda. If you follow her instructions you can succeed.
she's fine, the subject is boring which is why her class is boring! she truly wants to get us involved, it's just hard because we're all drowsy from learning about bacterial cells. and wesbrook is kept in this oddly low lighting and the chairs are comfy, perfect for a nap... zzzz... benbasat is a little unorganized though it's true. but nice
Very picky marker on lab reports and exams. You never really know what she is looking for. Lab reports having extraneous questions with them that aren't really that useful to the lab. Some of the labs can be pretty dry and lecture, while containing vital info, can be coma inducing. A kind hearted person who takes time to help.
She was a terrible teacher. I could barely understand what she was saying with her accent. If you get her, get out!
By far the worst professor I have ever had. I could rant about her for days, but it can all be summarised by the fact that she is not an effective instructor at all. She makes dry boring material even more dessicated. I ended up with a 94 in the class, but it was a useless class, and an even worse prof. Total waste of my time.
avoid! i must have passed out at least 3 times this semester in her class and didn't even realize it.like mentioned already, makes a dry course even dryer..read up on stuff covered in lecture before the lecture. her midterms and finals are almost identical to the practice ones so don't neglect those
The class is a weeding out first year survey course, so the material is dry and the learning curve is steep but she makes it as entertaining as possible. She also talks about her research to prove she has an interest and practises what she preaches!
Very good prof. Provides the class with many useful and clear examples. It's not her fault the material is difficult and boring. I think that she makes it as interesting as she can. Her online course notes are very useful and complete.
disgusting horrible prof. she provides absolutely NO help and i fall asleep every single day in her class. her class avg mt is 50%...meaning is a horrible prof. GET OUT OF THIS CLASS NOW
Definately knows what she is talking about, but loses the interest of the class very easily. I find it hard to stay awake in her class, and find the text book (which was made by ubc) was not the best sounce to learn from. The learning environment is very boring and bland, and the text used is not sufficient at explaining concepts. Boring course.
I thought she did a really good job with such a boring course. She is really nice and helpful during office hours. Midterm average was good 67%. She knew what she was talking about so she answered all questions clearly.
I thought she was a pretty good teacher. The midterm and final were both quite easy - she taught us exactly what we needed to know. On both the midterm and the final I thought there were a few ambiguities, though. Both the course notes and her lecture were concise.
Hey, if someone hadn't emailed her with a request to make PowerPoint, it never would have happened, as she started the term clueless about technology. Her class was boring and the questions were ALL along the lines of, "Which of the following is NOT correct?" which tend to be ambiguous. Written questions would've been nice!
She is sooo boring. Very monotonous. I guess if you've been having trouble sleeping, you can go to her class. Barely gets feedback from the class when she asks questions or whether we're following her. I don't blame them.
She's a pretty bad biology prof, no one really pays attention to her even when she asks questions. The midterm average was quite low comparing to other sections that were taught by other profs. No need to go to her class because you get the material from the custom notes
Pretty good prof, best one out of the 112 teachers. If you haven't read the text, no point going to class, you will be lost the whole time. Midterm + final same for all sections, extremely hard though!
First of all, the final was incredibly difficult.. Definitely a class aiming to weed out the first years. On the bright side though, it's really easy to make fun of this prof :) It always sounds like there's a bubble in her throat and she looks like a phage
not approachable. she is the first professor/ teacher i've taken a dislike to. answering/ asking questions is like stepping into a field of land mines. u don't know whether she'll bite your head off or not. she scolded me for asking to make the overhead clearer! she teaches alright, bring in PPT slides or classes impossible to follow.
Brilliant teacher. Knows what she's talking about! She was way clearer than Prof. Kion. Reading the textbook beforehand is a must to fully understand her lectures. I give her brownie points for trying to make the class laugh. I dont know many good bio professors...but this woman knows her stuff and can definitely teach it well. Good prof for summer
This class is in-cred-i-bly boring and very sleep-inducing. Had to struggle to stay awake at least once every class...plus there is no scaling in this course, which can be a good or bad thing depending. Learn to be INTIMATE with your course note packet because it'll be your life-raft.
I actually liked her a lot. She covered all the material thoroughly and made sure we understood all the diagrams (which is CRUCIAL). Her PRS were easy marks. The biol112 is a hard course, I thought she explained everything pretty well. MUCH better than other profs.
She's really not bad. She explains things really clearly and she makes sure that everyone understands. It's not her fault that the material is boring, she tries her hardest to make it interesting. But yeah, Midterms and finals are pretty hard. DO THE PROBLEM SETS AND SAMPLE EXAMS!!!!!
I don't know why this prof is getting negative comments - she is NOT boring and she's very approachable. I went to see her with questions many times and she was very helpful. The class is tough but fair - but you absolutely MUST go to class. You cannot just read the book and figure it out without lectures.
Pretty hard marker. She picks on little details. But she is very patient when you ask her questions. She doesn't answer questions directly instead she gives you hints and help you to find out the answer by yourself.
The only 100-level bio course in UBC that I liked. Lecture is straight out from the textbook, with more visuals and explanations so read beforehand and steadily. Exams were easy, just get used to the sample exams and do the problem sets (I took this in summer and was surprised at my mark even if I didn't).
Horrible Prof, maybe its just the class, but Benbasat's lectures were dry and hard to understand. Her powerpoints are useful but she doesn't explain anything else besides whats on them - she reads STRAIGHT from them and doesn't give you enough time to write anything down. Exam was nothing like the practice exam - overall stay away from this prof!!
hard to understand and hard marker
she PMS's alot, never in my life did i expect a prof to leave a lecture hall cuz she was choked; this one did. u could say that it was because of the loudness of the class, which is still unjustified because she went haywire when she posted a PRS question, everybody needs to discuss it, she flipped out then and left.
If you go to classes and pay attention then you're pretty much fine
things are most of the time even more confusing by her explanaition, and not good in managing time... the most difficult part and confusing part (at least what i think) she only spend very little time on it and kind of a rush at the last lecture in order to finish the course requirement. But still a willing to help teacher, not very gooding teachin
She is one of the worst profs that I have ever had. She walked out of the class because people were talking instead of just kicking the offending people out! Her lectures are really boring, and its hard to learn anything new because she just read off the slides. Don't think about asking questions because she usually doesn't know the answer or so i
Dr Benbasat was not a bad teacher. She was pretty good at explaining things and tried to make things interesting. It's not her fault that she gets mad - I found the classes shamefully noisy for a university course. There were three whole rows at the back of the room that just kept TALKING for no good reason.
GREAT PROF.clear, very approachable/nice. she really cares about her students. you can tell by the way she answers questions during office hours. ALWAYS go to office hours even if you have no questions. Just sitting there and talking to her can help you learn. exams were fair and quite easy. take her if you can.
This is one of the most straight forward professors you will ever get. Her lectures are exactly what she says they will be and the material is practically ALL in her coursebook. Things that are not in the book she makes obvious in class. The ones who don't do well are the ones who don't spend 15 minutes looking over the material before class.
A great prof to hve for the summer. She is very clear w/ the course material. She is also very helpful. Her tests are not too bad, and they are fair. In order to do well, u need to stay on to of it. Do everything that she wants u to do, the assignment, reading and online quiz. good luck!
this course is pretty much the wet slap in the face to the 1st years in understanding that ppl aren't going to hold ur hands anymore like in high school. Prof doesn't really care about u but since ur in uni, u are pretty much on ur own anyways to learn the details. midterm+finals r HARD but workable. avg ~66%-pretty good
Contrary to what some people are saying, Benbasat is actually a great prof. She has taken steps to make her lectures more exciting by introducing the class to various interesting videos. Her lectures and notes are usually very clear and exams weren't too hard-although some questions had bad grammar so it was hard to know what they were asking.
I dont know why everybody hates this prof. Shes great!! I had her for Biology 112 for the second time. (I failed Bio 112 the first time) and I got a high A-. I was very happy. I'm taking Micrb 202 right now and I love it! her lectures are interesting, clear and she's so nice! Try going to her office hours, she'll answer all your questions.
MICB 202 is not exactlly the easiest course. It involves a lot of memorization and lots of understanding. Dr. Benbasat did a good job at making the lectures as interesting as possible. Her notes are really clear and shes one of the nicest profs I've had at UBC.
She was a great prof, and really taught well! It was a pleasure to take this class.
Excellent teacher! She may not be the most clear at times, but if you make that known, she tries her best to explain To do well in this course, attend all lectures and print out her lecture slides as an accompaniment- they're a lot more useful than the textbook!BIO 112 was indeed one of the hardest courses I've taken, but this prof made it bearable
She is a great prof, but not very helpful during office hours.
office hours is not helpful at all. she has a rude attitude in emails and during lectures. She walked out on us because the whole class was confused and talking to each other.
Very enthusiastic about class and tries to make lecture content applicable. A little accent but bearable
Benbasat is EXTREMELY helpful in office hours! Maybe the people that came to ask her questions had not really prepared or fully thought about their questions. Can be a difficult marker. In lab she can be intimidating tho...
As one in the last micb class before she retires, she is one of the best profs I have been around. Clear, helpful, but exams arent easy. You will earn what you deserve.
