absolutely funny, she is so cute(and I'm a straight female). great examples, with her notes I don't need the book! awesome! love the course

i got dumber just having breathed the same air as this woman.
problem with her is when ever you go to office hours she doesnt want to help, shes like always too busy yet she is always there. and she is miserable !
She's awesome. Knows how to teach. Very knowledgable, and hot
This professor was extremely rude. She overgeneralized a lot, and as a result made the whole class loose interest in organic chemistry.
Terrible Prof, who doesn't know what the hell she is doing at all. hated her class and i think she is very biased and ****!!!! Also extremely rude and very unhelpful. Not very bright either
This professor is RUDE, and is incompetent and does not know the material she is supposed to teach, she is confused and arrogant. She is bias and ****/****. Overall she does not make a particularly good university professor. She is a waste of university time and resources!

"Worst professor at U of T" would be an understatement. Maybe the worst university prof ever. She is rude, arrogant and makes a class that should be relatively easy far more difficult than it should. How she still has a job is beyond me. Georges looks like the coolest guy in the world next to her.

Yes, she can be rude, but if you get to know her she is quite nice. She picks her favorites, but that shouldn't really matter since she doesn't do the marking anyhow. The class is really easy if you do the work, there isn't all that much material to take in. FAR easier than Georges section.
Great class, easy to follow. She goes out of her way to create extra study sessions to help students. Tests are very straigtforward. If you did poorly its probably because you don't get chemistry or you didn't come to class. Though her final is a lot harder than any of her tests.
An actual chem prof that knows how to teach. The whole chem department, especially Michael Georges has something to learn from her. She will teach you concepts with the least amount of work.
Arrogant and RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is really bad prof. She even said that 2-methyl propane wasn't redundant (wow...). Anyway, despite her stupidity, rudeness and her multicoloured clogs with thumbtacks in them, believe it or not, she DOES have a degree from Harvard.
Jumi is arrogant yet makes mistakes when she teaches. She's rude and doesn't care whether or not her students learn. She believes the A students will get A's anyway so why bother teaching properly. I don't like her attititude towards students that struggle with chem. She's a **** and overall someone u wouldn't want to talk to outside class anyway.
She is arrogant and doesnt want to answer students' questions (at least not my questions). She says her tests are always based on the lecture material but her tests always have harder questions that those she covered. I think she should teach her students concepts more rather than talk about how ppl who plagiarize get expelled for half an hour.
Garbage!!! I bet her degrees at harvard and cal-tech were in English! Don't take this chem minor seriously!! She doesn't know anything about chem. she shouldn't even be a lab techn.
what's the point in failing 70% of the class ?

1st yr chm ruined organic chem for me. but shin made it so much easier to understand. my advice is GO TO CLASS!! her notes are SO important. if u go to every single class and pay close attn and take good notes theres no reason u'd do bad. go to her office hrs and ask Qs if u don't understand sth. she's not rude at all when u go talk to her 1 on 1.
Most of the problem in the tests and the exam were not based on the problem sets and the lectures. I do not like the way she talks or communicates to other students. I almost ran out of interest in learning organic chemistry because of her irritating attitude.
I finished three degree programs and Ms. Shin is the biggest liar I ever met. Everyone is at risk. I saw it time and time again. She cannot be trusted at all. You have been warned.
This prof does not know any thing about chem She makes many mistakes on the blackboard so it confused me-our first midterm had many mistakes. She is a big liar & she mislead us.EVERY DAY she would say, this would be on the exam. Her notes are very general and simple but her midterms are very hard. This isn't prof w/ whom you would enjoy organic chm.
The prof may not be the best but she is helpful. That's what I consider a good prof one who actually cares about her students. So go to all the extra help stuff she does.
Second best prof at UTM. She cares about her students and will try to help them if they really want it. If you actually try in her class, then you will get a 80 guaranteed.
We had two midterms (25% each) and one final (50%). She made first midterm so damn easy that class avg was above 70%. Then she made second midterm, which was held after Drop deadline, so hard, that the avg was around 50%. Then she made the final a killer. And this is what she does: screw you at the end!
See Last post: She does that each and every year, but I ignore other thinking Organic Chemistry is a hard course no matter with whom you take, but this prof just want to destroy you life. The way she makes so many mistake on blackboard, shows that she must be a horrible student in the past, perhaps thats why she is taking revenge on us. Good luck!
I agree with the people below me. She is a mean woman, not just saying because I failed and mind you worked my butt off, but she barely would help me during office hours. She kicked me out and told me I didn't know what I was doing. Teachers are supposed to TEACH and ENCOURAGE, not discourage and embarass you. She thinks she is the smartest person.
SHIN IS AWESOME! gonna miss her classes. she was SOOO helpful and welcoming in office hours. VERY understanding and the tests were all VERY fair. course not as bad as everyone "thinks" it is
READ the textbook thoroughly before you take this course. It is not an easy course to begin with so you need background knowledge. This professor is amazing but if you want to do well you have to work hard and you'll succeed! She is soooo cute, luv professor shin!!!
VERY VERY HELPFUL AND VERY CLEAR.AMAZING PROF
Amazing prof! The book is not really needed for this course! Just never ever miss a class, Do all the practice set problem and you are guarranteed AT LEAST a B in this course =)
One of the worst professors. She made so many mistakes each lecture, picked favourites and isn't that friendly. She wears some really funky clothing though. The book made some of the material make sense more than she did but the marking was random almost. One TA would dock marks for trivial stuff while another would give you marks when wrong. Awful
rude prof, but clear in explanations...overall an easy course..lectures are a MUST
One of the worst profs I've ever had, goes way to fast in lectures and expects you to know the material already. Tests were somewhat difficult. Take this course in the summer instead =/
This was a really challenging class but for those who kept up with the work know that getting an A is extremely possible. The professor is really great. She is very approachable and makes herself available for students' questions.
She is pretty clear in her explanations, I barely used the textbook (maybe a few times), as long as you go to class and keep up, you should be good. Dunno about previous years' reviews but maybe she improved? The tests are straightforward but you can lose a LOT of marks if you miss/don't know one thing...
Extremely arrogant and narcissistic. Not very helpful. She spent an entire lec before the test telling us how to hand our tests in on time or we fail. I would have preferred a review session. Regardless, she does have a degree from Harvard, which begs the question, what are you doing teaching at UTM?
Don't know what everybody is complaining about. Tests are easy if you do the work and do the Problem Sets/Past Tests. She makes herself very available with tutorial-like office hours three times a week.
Shes an amazing prof, the previous comments actually scared me. At first she seems a little rude but shes helpful. She explains things well and if you dont understand in lecture (which are crucial to go to), ask her in help session. She likes to see students make an effort before helping them though. Just hoping the exam goes well :)
Good lecturer. Clear message conveyed in lecture. Lectures are a must. Her notes are good. Exceptionally rude, though. =S
So easy! invest in molecular models over the book unless you plan on taking upper year organic courses
Prof- Shin is an exemplary professor. She went out of her way to create help sessions & office hrs to aid students. GO TO HER HELP SESSIONS, totally keep you in track. She's more concerned with us learning the material rather than tricking us with unforseeable test questions. Good course.
Can't relate to any neg comments posted. She was amazing! Made orgo a breeze for someone who fought through 1st yr chem. Super clear, repeats the imp stuff over & over, tests are really really fair. If you go lecture & do the practice, you have to do well. She's not overly concerned with class avgs. Wants ppl to do well. Love her. 1 of best at uoft
She is a very good professor and this course is really easy and repetitive. I studied the full day before each test and averaged an 82 for my final mark. Just use the textbook even though she doesn't recommend it, it actually helps ALOT. Also, make sure to use your models !!!!
She is very direct in her attitude towards you (if you are being annoying or ask dumb questions, she will let you know). However she is extremely helpful, and it is important that she gets to know you to fully help you (get to know her by attending her office hours, she gives amazing tips/hints for tests). Barely need to use the textbook.
He ego & attitude skyrockets! The course is fair, make sure you do past exams for practice and her lecture examples. She really likes people that go to her office hours and is extra nice to them, otherwise you are just a student number. She needs to realize that not everyone can attend her office hours due to other classes and take a chill pill.
If you have this prof, drop the course right away! She is practically useless, loves people that go to her office hours, her exams are fairly hard, expects too much from students to know by themselves. Better to take it with another prof. The highest mark recieved for the course was 78. Not worth a risk
makes organic really easy. attend every lecture, redo lecture problems,go to her office hours and fsg's with actual qns and do as many past tests/exams as you can to prepare for her assessments! she's very helpful and if you work hard you can get a good grade! btw MODELS=life savers
Definitely an easy class, best prof ever!
I'm not a person who is too fond of chemistry (I hate it), but Jumi Shin makes organic easy and even enjoyable. You don't even need to read the text for this course; just go to lectures, do her problem sets and ask questions if you have any.
Very rude and condescending to the class. Ridiculed people for asking certain questions, only helped people if they went to her office hours, made the test fairly hard, have very few pointers on how to prepare for the test and gave really poor questions to do review with. Avoid this class or prof at all costs if you can!
her lectures are the bulk of what the exams are made of. She makes hard concepts relatively easy for us and her exams are fair. But it's organic chemistry, you can't rely on just attending the lecture and doing a few problems once in a while, you have to put in the work for it. Use your models (she really likes them).
Worst professor I've had to date. Condescending and arrogant. Total favouritism towards students that attend her office hours. Marking is a joke. If you need this class, avoid this prof at all costs!
She is the worst professor i have ever had. The subject matter was easy. But approaching her for questions and doubts was a nightmare. She just made me hate chemistry!
Great course! One of the few courses at UTM where your mark will directly reflect the work you put in, come to class, do past tests, go to her help sessions, 4.0 guaranteed!
Even though can't speak from experience cause I did go to her office hours makes sense and actually as a matter of fact most professors do favor people that go to office hours. A pro hint for really any course that the professor takes the time to make office hours go to them. Attending office hours for most courses goes a long way to the 4.0.
Great Lectures, Easy tests, Awkward one-on-one
Straight up, if you want to pass, GO TO OFFICE HOURS! She stresses this a million times in class for a reason. She doesnt have enough time during lecture to teach you everything. In class, you get the knowledge, but in office hours you learn the skills you need to master the course. Textbook is not needed, but it may be useful to clarify things!
She is a very caring professor, even though it may not seem like it. She can be intimidating at first, but she honestly wants her students to understand the material and to enjoy studying organic chemistry. Nonetheless, this is a still fairly challenging course, its organic chemistry after all. Pro tip: keep on top of your work and practice.
Prof Shin says the same thing repeatedly without being helpful. She talks about irrelevant things such as her personal life or past students instead of using that time for more examples. She then favours students who attend office hours. The material is mostly similar to first year but the marking system is completely arbitrary. She's also rude.
Great prof! She explains things well and tests are fair, with no surprises. Go to office hours, its best to just consider them part of the course. This is where you learn specifics of what she wants on the tests.
Hardest class I've taken so far. May just be the subject chemistry itself, but I was not able to get much help when I needed it. It was difficult to understand anything going on in the class. Problems/questions would be left unsolved, for us to do ourselves. If you're looking for an elective, pick something else.
bad prof, she forces people to come to her office hours and help sessions, which were very crowded and it made me tired all the time. Horrible prof when it comes to tests and final exam if you don't attend her office hours.
inefficient lecture, office hour should not also be a main source of learning not everyone have time to attend office hour when you ask her a question, she will said: well, you tell me! think about it, and you tell me next time! AND she always says in lecture: hi guys, why don't you ask questions she is rude and don't respect students
Lectures are important, you skip them you're going to fail. Her teaching method is annoying sometimes, she refuses to give answers for hard trick questions and let's you figure it out yourself. worst thing about this prof is that she's a sadist when it comes to grading. ANYTHING less than a perfect answer on her tests will hit you like a truck.
She has a bit of a complex and so she tends to structure the course so that you are entirely dependent on her. (No textbook stuff, no online material: you HAVE to interact with her to get what you need to know). But the good thing is the material is pretty easy so if you attend class you should have no problem.
She is great with explaining concepts and has a great teaching style, but she does not seem approachable when you need help with something. She refuses to give you an answer to a question and tells you to go figure it out yourself and come back with an answer. She also tends to take off marks on the smallest things.
All of her lectures are chalkboard based, so it is absolutely necessary to come to class unless you can get notes from someone else. She's adorable and charismatic, and I found that it was easy to learn from her so long as you practiced afterwards at home. Her tests are very picky though, and one wrong thing could make you lose a lot (i.e. me)
Worst prof I've ever had, everything to her personality to teaching style is awful. She is very condescending when asking for help. Midterms coming up in a week, and guess what, we have no lecture slides and only 10 questions to practice, and no textbook to read. Course content is easy, but prof is death.
Just recently had a test with her and can echo all of the negative sentiments expressed on this page. Problems presented in lectures and problem sets are immensely easy and do not in any way prepare you for the test. Unnecessarily creates an unfriendly and pressurized environment, too.
Chalkboard based lectures so attendance is essential. This is a course where practice problems is how to study. Do not memorize reactions. What I did to get more practice because she only gives like 10 practice problems for a test is I printed the 243 past exams and did the questions that were covering the tested topics. GL.
She has rules about which aisle she wants you to use to access a seat in lecture if you are late. No laptops allowed out during the lecture. She refuses to answer any question if you're stuck. Novel problems on the midterms/exams. Expects you to know all of CHM110, CHM120 and, CHM242 thoroughly. Excessively hard marker (picky) and unapproachable.
The professor is great at teaching, however, she does teach a lot of wrong chemistry if you take Organic 2. She comes off as harsh and mean but if you get to know her she is willing to help out. She tries to let you fix your own problems first before helping so come to her with some work shown.
She's really bad. She structures the class so that your only source of content is lecture- she doesn't use the textbook and posts no online notes, it's literally just what she draws on the chalkboard and that's it. And she makes mistakes on that chalkboard. A lot. If you ask about it she just says 'dont worry about it' even its later on the test.
The course revolves entirely around lectures. She will do things her way and penalizes methods shown in the textbook on tests. She has a massive ego and has structured her course and grading criteria to make you dependent on her help. She comes across as rude and has no problems in leaving you hung up to dry when trying to get help on questions.
Shin appears to be mean but she's not. She doesn't want you to fail as long as she sees you are trying. If you don't go to class you WILL fail as the class is all chalkboard based. In order to do well, must do the practice problems she posts. Although she doesn't provide answers IF YOU GO SEE HER SHE WILL CONFIRM YOUR WORK. Overall, very nice! FAV
Jumi is a very tough professor who is excessively rude and unapologetic , she will let you know how stupid your question is instead of answering it. Furthermore, she is unwilling to round marks up, I needed a 75 for post university measures and she refused to round me up from a 74. Attendance is mandatory, she wont post slides.
organic chemistry is a very hard course and professor Jumi is not making it any easier her teaching style is unorthodox as she only do chalk -based lectures. CHM243 is a very tough course and 3 hours weekly for a lecture won't cut it so you should utilize her office hours and help sessions to do well in this course. she is really a good prof.
This professor is the worst one Ive had within my three years at uoft (that should say a lot right there) she is completely non sympathetic to students, gives zeros for for handing in anything even if its a second late. She does not care for students and teaches horribly. She has no heart, so avoid her at all costs.
She is one of the best profs that I ever had. She explained CHM242 material so good, she might seem rude but she is so sweet. I loved every single minute of me taking that course with her. Her tests are okay and they mark fairly too. Cannot explain how good she is.
I did not enjoy that class at all. Jumi is very stuck up and excessively rude and does not apologize at all. Her teaching is okay, but if you ask a simple question her response would be very undermining. She hard to approach and is not very understanding the slightest. Overall, bad experience with her.
Took Organic chem 1 with Prof Jumi and she was great. Very tough in class and doesn't take nonsense/ dumb questions lightly but she gets to the point and her style of lecture teaches you everything you need to know with perfect examples. Tests were very similar to in-class material and quizzes were fair, I recommend reading the textbook content too
Lecture content was very helpful. Her midterms and quizzes were fair. Textbook readings were not mandatory since we were tested exclusively on content covered in lectures. Overall, her teaching style was great.
She teaches good. But her personality is oh so horrible. She get frustrated easily when students ask questions. When students ask her to go back a page (since she goes by fast) she tells them that they should've copied it down faster. She marks insanely hard on tests that are out of 40; so 2 marks is 5%. Teaches well, but needs a personality check.
She's ok at teaching, no real complaints there. But other comments are right, she has a stuck-up personality. Also, the textbook is never used and everything comes form her video lectures. This is a huge turn-off as I hate videos and prefer to learn from written sources. If you have a similar learning style to me, avoid this prof like the plague.
My sections average is 51 percent right now? I don't know what she wants from us? I'm so confused about what she is doing, no way she's gonna fail the whole class, but still, she's going way too hard. I think the exam may be easier but as of now this course makes zero sense.
very rude and unapproachable. often makes passive aggressive remarks at students who try asking for help/clarification during lectures. also is a really tough grader and takes off lots of marks for small things. whole vibe just kind of puts students down. i'm doing so horribly when i'm trying to work my ass off. no leniency at all. worst prof.
She does go over content fairly quickly. That is fine, but she wont listen to many of the questions asked during lectures. As some other says, her personality seems a little arrogant. Our second term test was a disaster for all of us. Despite this fact, she uses the top 1% as an excuse to not even budge for a grade curve. Im having headaches.
Jumi is the worst professor Ive had the displeasure of having at UTM. Shes rude, condescending, and straight up arrogant. Additionally, she refuses to make it possible to approach her about marking without fearing youll do worse. The marking criteria is inconsistent and nonexistent. To put it in context, Im a 4.0 student struggling to pass
Instead of worrying about what the zoom chat consists of, or making fun of international students questions (to the point where they dont want to talk anymore), answer their questions and help them so your class average isnt a 35 no cap.
Jumi Shin is the reason why I drink. Every other chemistry professor Ive had is amazing but Jumi (doesnt deserve the respect of being called professor) has the most disgusting and horrible personality Ive ever seen. Her personality is the reason why I now drink beer almost every night, its to relieve my stress of having her as a professor.
She is an elitist who loves pets.
I thought she wasn't one of those crappy-mark-takeaway teachers based on how passionate she seemed to be to the work, however I learned different and so did many other students. The mark given on the most recent midterm, typically the most recent one, was clearly dishonest and it made absolutely no sense.
Clearly she went easier on the previous years, look at the ratings from previous years. But she absolutely destroyed us this year like there were points where my whole section was failing. Take it at UTSG or UTSC or with anyone this lady is wack.
Professor Shin has left a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to Organic Chemistry. Now only was she rude, unapproachable but she simply does not respect anyones time. Her favouritism is very apparent and this leaves those who are not favoured by her struggling to get a decent grade despite their best efforts. Do not take her class.
There is nothing good to say about her lol. She is a tough grader loves making her students suffer. Her marking makes absolutely zero sense. Her ego gets bigger every time a student fails
242 in a nutshell: -prof unapproachable, embarrasses students -most tutorials had a test class average of 30-50 -unclear marking scheme (she does provide us with an answer key but each TA docks however they feel like docking) -U can never get a single question regarded, its the whole test. She TERRIFIES us in that our mark might go down
She is a major cause of my depression nowadays.
To be honest I was better off taking Quantum mechanics and probably wouldve got a better mark.
unfortunately, you get docked marks if your TA doesn't like the way your arrow is curved, or if your chair looks slightly off. more marks are given to artistry than concepts. TELL ME WHEN IN MY LIFETIME WOULD I NEED TO DRAW AN ARROW SPECIFICALLY CURVED TO YOUR LINKING?! i felt hopeless and powerless in this class. no support staff.
I liked chemistry a lot before taking this class but I did not appreciate the professors lack of sympathy. She was very condescending and unapproachable, more so than any other prof Ive ever had before. I was scared to ask questions at all during this class out of fear that she may give me a condescending response.
When she isnt busy being passive-aggressive in the emails you send with genuine questions, or giving snarky remarks in lectures for questions students do not know, or encouraging us to attend office hours when 90% of the class is either scared or intimidated by her, she tries to find ways in which each tutorial section achieves a new low.
To be honest, Jumi Shin made me want to taste every chemical they tell us not to in a lab smh
I felt like Professor Shin was overly confident in their own ability of the subject that they continuously failed to give us any relevant information. It almost felt as though we were being pushed away at points because she wouldn't give us a straight answer to a viable question. All in all, it's a top class with a below average teacher.
Alright so WORST CLASS EVER. THE most rude prof I have had being a 3rd year student. She docks marks without telling you what you did wrong, humiliates students, changes her statements after tests and expects you to do well. She is so hindering to mental health. Avg in tutorial sections are at 20-50 range for quiz + midterms. Life ruined gpa drop.
she constantly gave test after test without actually going over the unit . threw my test away after i failed it
Don't be afraid of this class. Prof Shin is great at explaining, yes the marking sometimes can be intense, but that's because the mechanisms are specific. The most important thing is to attend lectures, the test Qs aren't made to trick you, take good notes and go over all the examples she teaches and you'll do great bc you've seen them b4.
whoever wrote the review below me is capping so hard styl (definitely a teachers pet, you know who they are).
Every time I go to lecture I accidentally crap my pants because of how scary she is. Avoid this professor at all costs, shes worse than Chernobyl!
I can't believe how rude she is to students when they have questions. She seems visibly upset at people when they are confused by saying "that's just how it works". Seems completely rude when part of your job is to teach students. These schools need to hire teachers that are respectful and have a passion for teaching SMH!
Professor Shin was the sole reason I hated organic chemistry. Unfriendly, unprofessional, condescending person that makes negative comments about students who are simply asking questions but you need to ask her questions to do well in this course as tutorials are useless. Her ego is an issue; can't expect someone to know everything at birth
She has made my life miserable!!!!!!!!
Do not take CHM242 with this prof, her test looks easy but marks heavy. TMI: my tutorial had 39% average for term test II.
She will do anything to lower your grade. Good Luck
She is a little bit hard to approach because you never know if she will talk to normally or talk to you sarcastically. She is very strict about handing test on time, if you are one second late, it is an automatic zero. (not very compassionate and hates excuses) The TAs mark very hard but give absolutely no feedback at all. Tough course + prof.
This prof will haunt you in your dreams, if you need to take this course, take it with different prof.
Prof. Shin was born to drop your grade, horrible professor...
She's the reason why I dropped out of chemistry. I loved chemistry but she ruined it. Now I'm a sociology major at queens who uses iPad notes UWUWUWUWU
i was a straight A student, yet this is the first class i got a grade lower than a A-. it's awful out here. this course is literally constructed in a manner that you simply can't succeed. ridiculously rude, questionable marking, and unclear criteria. you can literally lose marks over how curvy your arrows are. PLEASE SAVE URSELF THE MISERY.
Professor Shin made organic chemistry an easy class -- her lectures were very clear, and she gave more office hours than any other professor I've had at UofT. Definitely attend ALL lectures, and as many office hours/tutorials as you can, as organic chemistry is a problem solving course, and you will learn the most by attempting problems.
The course is composed of 100% lecture-based assessments, frequency is once per 1-2 weeks. Lecture explains test materials well, test difficulty is medium but marked extremely harsh, missing an arrow can cost 10% of points in 1 question. Prof obsessed to punctuality of students, my classmate failed 242 as it submit a quiz 10s late.
She teaches concepts extremely well, probably one of the best professors I've had in terms of teaching. Her tests are very fair as well; no super hard or super easy questions, however, her marking on tests is unfair with little to no clarification given for marks docked. You don't mainly learn about orgo, you learn how she works in order to do well
Her lectures are not bad and her teaching style is also not too difficult to follow but her grading is TERRIBLE. She deducts so much mark for simple mistakes and does not care for your explanation if there was problem in uploads (Gave 0% for 7% quiz that was previously marked as 95% because crowdmark did not process in time) Super unfriendly.
she regraded my term test 2 lower the grades 3 hours before exam day. This shows she does not care & considering students. Since my grade got lower i lost my hope to do well in exam. After the grade released people from group chat, few people who wrote the same thing as my answer but they got the full mark or one mark off but i received 1/10.
Worst prof I ever had!!!! If you plan to take chm242 with her, do not skip her lectures, dont expect that she will listen to you, know that she is unfriendly, dont ask for regrade (guaranteed that you will come out with more marks deducted). It is better to take this course with different professors, she will make you cry.
She is sooooooo rude! She is selfish and does whatever she wants with your mark. She literally bcame a prof to haunt students. Her tests are not terrible but marks horrible. She has her own "favourite" students that she picks from the course and give them all the marks to boost up the course average. Other 200 students will end with crap marks.
Do not take chm242 with Jumi Shin. I took many prof for this course and she is far worse. If you do not want your GPA to plunder, rearrange your schedule to avoid her. The course average tells to truth. This course average was the lowest out of the whole year (around C-). I also took her without any research and got trashed.
Tests are fair and almost directly from the lecture examples. However, she claims to like when students ask questions but will get angry and degrade, demean, and humiliate you if you even ask her something as simple as repeating a concept/example.
Jumi is actually not a bad lecturer however I could easily say that she is a sadist. She flexes in class about all the money she makes and spends a good chunk of the lecture yelling at us. with that said, she is the toughest marker! 1 time I went up to her to ask for a regrade and she literally said that mark is generous you shouldve gotten less.
I understand people have opinions about her, before starting the course I was genuinely scared reading these reviews but she is a great professor. She has her own teaching style but if you adapt and follow what she says, you will definitely get a decent grade. Understand the marking scheme off the old answered exams and see what's expected of you.
Took CHM462 with this rude, unethical, unapproachable professor. She embarrassed me in front of the class, grade-telling everyone. She doesn't deserve to be an UofT Professor. This Uni should have kicked her out of teaching years ago.
I took this course as a requirement for my chemistry minor but had to drop it because of this unethical, very rude, and extremely unprofessional professor. She does not give students access to any slides, lecture notes, or resources. She does not provide a basic foundation for any concepts and expects you to know everything already. Avoid her!
good thing i didnt have her for 243
GO TO OFFICE HOURS PLEASE! SHE HAS 3 DAY OFFICE HOURS AFTER LECTURE, PLEASE GO TO THEM IF YOU WANNA GET A 4 IN THIS CLASS, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! SHE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR, VERY CLEAR WITH HER EXPECTATIONS, BUT THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW THEM IS WHEN YOU GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!!!
Ngl shes a bit scary at first but shes actually just very straight forwards with things. My biggest advice is GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She offers office hours after every lecture. It may seem intimidating at first but after the first office hours, just go and put questions on the board and don't feel discourage that she says your answer is wrong.
OK teacher if you fit with her teaching style, horrible otherwise. Her help sessions are helpful if you're fine with writing your questions on the board in a crowded room. She also mentions a lot of grading criteria during these sessions. She's also impatient if you ask more advanced questions--not great for fostering an interest in chemistry.
CHM242 would be trivial if Shin weren't teaching it. Use Youtube/textbook. 1) Unfair marking - will dock (many) marks from chemically CORRECT answers if you don't draw to her preference 2) Does a lot of problem solving w/o giving necessary theory for strong understanding 3) Teaches via uncomprehensive handwritten lecture notes and doesn't post them
Tip: AVOID
this prof does not respect students
This is the worst professor at utm. She picks on the helpless in class and most time shames them to tears. She doesnt care about the students, pushes them to fail in the class intentionally. At her age because it would be the same as unistudents entering a first grade class and bullying them for not understanding different chemical mechanisms.
In lectures, she would publicly call out students who had emailed her, fostering a tense environment. She often singled out students for minor disruptions, like discussing questions too loudly or using their phones. Additionally, she said the r-slur in class, and sent unprofessional emails instructing students to “get their shit together.”
Get ready to study
I loved chemistry before this class. Changed the pathway I wanted to take chose another minor instead. Organic chem isnt hard, however if this is how most chem classes were gonna be, I'd rather do something else that can help me build better skills. This class was just not it because of the way they teach chemistry here.
This course serves as an introduction to organic chemistry, but the instructor seemed to assume that we should immediately master the material. When I asked questions, although she did provide assistance, she often appeared impatient, which made the experience uncomfortable. So arrogant...
So rude. Horrible experience. She acts like she invented chemistry, needs to be humbled.
The course was difficult, not due to the tests, but her demoralizing demeanor. She called out students by name, denied questions, and expected extensive prior knowledge without expanding on review material. She openly stated that deductions varied by student. While available outside class, responses lacked depth, requiring persistence to get help.
Most people that attend office hours grow to like her. Just mentally understand that she's a serious prof, and her way of helping students is through tough love. tip: when you ask her a question, be tough yourself and don't let her go until you acc understand, if you're scared of her from the start you won't go anywhere with this course trust me.
My advice: just don't.
If you want to stay happy, avoid this professor. She will call out anyone in class, humiliate them if they get the answer to her questions wrong, and more. I genuinely learning nothing from this class other than how to please her picky graders with my work.
Go to her office hours, it WILL be the best way to understand the material in this course. I know who my goat is.
She's definitely scary and really unapproachable for help which is annoying for a class like orgo. However I liked her lectures and she knows her stuff and knows how to explain things fairly well. Her attitude towards the class just ruined it for me. Go to help sessions if you can and do all the practice she gives you it will 100% be helpful.
Was okay at teaching the content. Wished she provided more practice instead of bashing other sources like Khan Academy.
She's prestigious, and she wants you to regularly attend class and take notes on paper. I basically learned nothing from this class; she recommended to avoid online resources like YouTube and Khan Academy, yet I learnt far more from them than from her. I give those sources full credit for what I know about organic chemistry.
She's tough. She makes you work, BUT it's worth it. If you put in the effort, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, and ignore her demeanor, you will succeed in the course. Push though her intimidation and ask questions. She gives direct feedback on your work during office hrs which is the most productive approach imo. You grow to appreciate her as you interact.
Honestly, just avoid if you can.
Horrendous. Avoid until you want to destroy your gpa for life.
Hello?? She is genuinely so rude and has pride in it. Schools should not even allow these professors. I'll never understand why adults like her exist, she will make your life hard as well as her own. This class was not it, save yourself, if u can afford to take it with another prof in another semester please do so.
Great professor! I think we need more like her. She is very tough and I can see why many people do not like her because of her tough love way of teaching. But in reality she really wants to see all her students succeed and if you can get past that CHM242 becomes a super easy course. Also her help sessions are definitely something to attend.
Please Avoid!
I never wore my seatbelt while driving to this class because I wanted to die before making it to her class
Her teaching style might not be for everyone, but if you do the practice work she gives, ask questions in tutorials/office hours or reach out over email, you'll be fine. She's clear about her expectations, and while the course isn't easy, she lays out exactly what you need to know, so there aren't many surprises on tests.
Against Teachnology, more for listener students
Keeps threatening to touch us
5min before the class started I was asking her whether I was allowed to ask her if she would be mad if I emailed her about a question that was marked subjectively. She preceded to turn on the mic and lecture me in front of the whole class (TWICE in a span of 3 minutes) "assuming I was trying to ask her about all my questions"(the class was silent)
DO NOT take this prof unless you want to ruin your entire semester. She is the most unwelcoming, entitled, and rude professor ive ever seen. Do yourself a favour and honestly avoid her at all costs. She willingly tries to make students lives so much harder by being so stuck up and passive aggressive which is the last thing you should do as a prof!
Worthy prof. You have to meet her halfway and put in the time, effort, and practice. Get your models, show up to lecture, and don't be afraid to be put on the hot seat. You'll learn more by actively seeking the answer and being willing to be wrong the first time. If you're actually up to learn and not just pass, you will definitely appreciate her.
I go to every class, write notes, and do the practice questions she posts. Despite this, I learnt absolutely NOTHING from going to class and had to teach myself the entirety of the course using online resources. She belittles her students and makes them feel stupid for asking questions/getting things wrong, just skip her if you have the choice
She's a horrible human being and an awful professor, avoid her if u can
you either like jumi or not. she's tough on grading and does NOT upload lectures on quercus, so its very important to go to the lectures! i found her difficult, but she explains everything pretty well in lecture. this is definitely a prof where you NEED to ask questions if you dont understand something, or else you'll get left in the dust
Literally so useless. terrible prof. just never even take this with her
Prof Shin teaches VERY well and wants her students to succeed, the course is well paced, and it's clear about whats expected on tests. Just go to class, practise, you will be fine. That being said, she is quite unapproachable and hostile, ask her questions and she will call you dumb, but she will help.
She is so useless i literally have to contact my ancestors to get answers to her practice tests cus she posts no answer key. how the hell am i supposed to know that im doing things correctly. i'm literally blindly doing all these questions and she's so unapproachable and makes you feel as dumb as a rock.
doesn't provide solutions for practice problems to encourage students to attend her help sessions but honestly it just slows you down and is an extremely inefficient way to learn. very unapproachable, demeaning, rude. will call you stupid unironically. TAs are tough markers. the class content itself is not the worst but 100/10 would NOT recommend.
She is a tough love type of professor. Can be quite hostile, but is overall just strict. But know this: The work you put it will reflect on your grade. The only way to do well in this class is to practice daily, she tells you this. GO TO HELP SESSIONS!! She genuinely cares for students and wants you to succeed (though it won't feel like it lol).
Professor Shin is one of those professors that has lost (or never had) the passion to teach students. She is an intelligent person who knows her stuff, but she is very impatient and condescending, which makes her extremely unapproachable. In order to do well in this course, go to office hours, as others have mentioned. Be brave and push through it.
