It is hard to undrstand his taching with his oriental accent. He has three tests and a final which makes you remember more on tests. His syllabus H.W. didn't match the book problems. He doesn't always understand the questions that you are asking.
He is very easy testing. You need to use math lab and tapes to do this course. His language skills hinder his teaching. You can get through this with a good grade if you take the time to use the other resources at the school. He curves. You should be able to pass. Need your 1050 skills.
If you don't speak english, this guy is perfect for you, he doesn't either! Can't answer your questions, can't understand your questions, you can't understand him. Curves well at the end of the semester, tests are not easy however, no homework due all semester.
I am not sure which was harder, learning Trig, or understanding what the teacher was saying. I did alright in the class because I bought the DVD's that go along with the text and taught myself. I couldn't understand his lectures, and he usually couldn't understand the students questions. I would suggest a different teacher.
this was by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He couldn't explain anything. He was very unfair and should be fired! Why do they hire teachers that dont speak english?
I dont understand why everyone is giving this guy such a bad wrap. I despise math but I thought his lectures and tests were very nicely laid out. He goes on a curve and his tests are easy. With all the math teachers at UVSC, if you struggle, I suggest taking it from him. Dont be afraid to communicate. He is very caring and wants students to succ
A definite language barrier here. The chinese accent is thick. His tests are tough. The only good sides are that his lessons are well planned, and requires very little homework. Pick a different teacher if you can.
This guy is amazing. At first he was very hard to understand, but after you get use to his accent he is a great professor. He is hillarious. He explains things very well and helps you understand things in more depth. The only negetice thing that I can think of, is that he is not very good at understanding the questions that you ask. B+
Michael Ling is a good teacher. He wants you to get through and succeed. If you try to understand him for more than 3 classes he's easy to understand. He grades on the curve and if you give the class an honest effort you'll get through with no problems.
Great teacher. He really worked with the class and wanted people to succeed. In doing so, it made math a lot more worth while and satisfying. Good test reviews and attitude with students.
Alright yes i know it's kinda mean, but this guy's accent makes him complicated to understand. He knows his stuff, but i felt like he couldn't teach it. For my class we were suppossed to take a test but it was post poned because people didn't have a clue of what he was talking about or saying. I recommend a different teacher. If you like independent study and easy tests this is your guy. I didn't like him.
Don't take the class! It's not worth failing.
This is a very hard class and the teacher is NOT easy, but if you study and put effort into the class he will help you and you will pass the class..
He is kinda hard to understand at first but as long as you do the homework you should be fine. His test aren't too hard and he grades on a curve.
If you are familiar with the subject this will be the easiest class you will ever take. I spent about 2 hours studying this semester to get an A. This is because the class is very easy but he is unbearable to listen to. New students will bring the class average so low that you can't help but get an A after the curve.
Jun Ling (Michael). Is a great teacher, If you can get passed the first week of his accent. He is incredibly funny and is an amazing teacher. He taught subjects that I had been doing for a long time and did ok at, but he did an amazing job with application of the concepts which made life ALOT easier. I would totally recommend to anyone.
Good guy, but the accent is so thick that he is almost impossible to understand for the first couple of weeks. After that, you can understand most of what he is saying. Calculus is hard in general, he probably made it easier with his teaching, but harder with the accent. So it evens out in the end. I am just glad that I passed.
hard to understsand. reads straight from examples in the book. doesn't do homework problems for examples ever.
HORRIBLE CLASS! I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND A WORD HE SAID. WHEN I TRIED TO SWITCH THE CLASS I FOUND I WAS TOO LATE AND SO I WORKED HARDER AND STILL FAILED. DON'T PAY FOR A CLASS YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL BECAUSE THERE IS NO COMPREHENSION IN CLASS. JUST TAKE ONE ONLINE AND GET THE SAME IF NOT MORE HELP. NICE GUY HORRIBLE ENGLISH.
I took this class in the summer. He made sure to teach us every section. He covered 7 sections in 2 days and tested us on those sections on the final the next day. He only puts 6 to 10 questions on a test. If you miss one, you pretty much fail. My scores ranged from 92% to 63%. There is no method to his grading system. Take it from someone else!
he is very hard to understand and makes trig impossible
Prof Ling has a Doctorate in Mathematics but speaks very little English. If you ask a question, he won't understand what you asked and doesn't give the proper answer so nothing makes sense. He teaches fast. Plan to spend a lot of personal time to figure out what he means. MEMORIZE the identities! (This is true for any trig class!)
He lectures but does not teach! His tests are 6-8 questions, if you miss one you fail basically. You can not understand his accent! He doesn't answer questions. He makes mistakes on the board. He says he doesn't grade on a curve yet a 60 on a 100 point test is OK? His explainations are confusing. I haven't learned anything and I love math.
Speaks very little english, and what he does speak, has an accent. very hard to understand, however he does know math. If you can get him to understand your question can be very helpful, but usually wont understand and can even confuse you more. unless you can understand his accent, i wouldnt really recommend taking him.
even though he is extremely difficult to understand and has virtually no social qualities he was in my mind a good teacher. this is a class where you will have to learn a lot from the book. he's not very demanding as a teacher, and the tests are always easier than you thought they were going to be.
He's very smart, but I don't particularly like him as a professor. He has a heavy accent but I could understand him alright. He doesn't understand students questions and I didn't think he was willing to help. I ended up just teaching myself out of the textbook.
Jun Ling is a nice guy but a terrible teacher. He has a thick Chinese accent and has no idea how to teach. I've never complained about a teacher before and I think he is the worst teacher I have ever, ever had. Do not take this class.
Oh my gosh! This guy is, like, the worst teacher on the planet earth! I agree with all those who spoke negatively about this guy. How he's still teaching is beyond me. Seriously, he could teach to Forrest Gump, and he'll still fail. Seriously, he got assigned an award at UVU, and I was NOT impressed. He should eat dung for a living after this trash
Ugh, possibly the most arrogant person in the world. There's no way I ever want to get taught by him ever again.
Know's his math extremely well, but has a hard time teaching at the level of his students. If you have a hard time teaching yourself I recommend you find another teacher.
He's an extremely knowledgeable math teacher, and is passionate about it. He can't teach it well, though. His thick Chinese accent makes him hard to understand, and his teaching methods are disorganized and rushed. Your real teacher will be the book!
He was the worst professor I have ever had. I usually am really good at trig, but I never could understand him. Plus whenever I tried to get help from him he just called me stupid and walked off. I'm really surprised he is still teaching because he is an absolute failure as a professor.
Absolutely horrible. You can't understand a single word he says. So if your good at understanding a convoluted textbook and you don't need explanations from a teacher, take him. Otherwise, don't. The guy needs to look for a new profession. Horrible
Absolutely, and completely terrible. His pace is atrociously fast this compounded by his accent makes his class about impossible to learn from. if you take this, please understand that you will be teaching yourself because he is totally and utterly useless.-sorry ling but teach somewhere else.
His accent is easy to get used to and even enjoyable to listen to sometimes, but I am good in math but he confused me more than he helped me. I found it better for me to not go to class and figure it out on my own. The only problem with that is that he does quizzes at random and turns in HW at random.
Short and simple. His accent is very thick. After struggling for the first few weeks you learn to understand him, but getting there is hard. He has a hard time understanding questions so if you ask a lot this isn't the class for you. He teaches a little bit like you know the material well i don't. bonus, his tests are very forgiving on a swing.
Here's the low down. His accent is very thick but you get use to it. Here's the secret to his class. When he lectures a lot of it is useless. Have your book opened to the chapter he is going over and follow him in the book. You'll find there is less you will have to remember. This is what I did and I got an A. He is also more than willing to help.
Just took him for the Summer , and well It seems most students don't understand this is a COLLEGE level math.I spent time studying outside of class , and his tests are easier than other professors. After the first week you should get used to his accent , if not then you're just makign excuses. Its college , study hard!!
Dr. Ling is a brilliant man, so sometimes its hard to keep up, but he is right on with what he says. Have your book open and follow him, its all there. Calc is a hard class, but if you study hard and do the homework its all good. The tests are simple.
Ling is a good teacher. College level math is difficult but he is willing to help you succeed.
He teaches the subject the pretty simple way , doesn't go too deep but gives you enough fro the tests. He's got a T.A. his name is Daniel and is extremely helpful.(fall2011 was his first time being a TA , I'm thankful he was there ) Prof Ling's accent might get in the way , but its not so bad after a couple of weeks. Easy enough Tests.
His exam is not very hard. If you put efforts and study , you will get good grades. Also, he is willing to help you as the best he can when you need help and let him know.
Professor Ling is a very smart guy but expects alot out of his students. He will not ask for every homework and rarely does quizzes, it is up to the student to stay on top of the work. Professor Ling basically only does proofs in his class, if you want to practice questions do the homework. Trig has a student instructor named Daniel. Utilize him!
He was very nice and knowledgeable but the class was not good. The accent killed me. I took a full semester of his class and I still can't understand him. His tests were hard and I didn't feel he prepared me for future math classes. I taught myself from the book and only pulled a C when usually math is one of my best subjects.
Hardest teacher I have ever had and I actually enjoy math. His accent is so unclear and he never helps students understand the material. One midterm the class average was 52%. There are easier professors I promise!
He spent much of class going over proofs and material, and not too much on how to solve problems better. His accent was hard to understand at times. He was very friendly and passionate about math, though. His tests were pretty hard(sometimes there would be a curveball question), but he ultimately curved your grade. I earned the grade I usually do.
He is very passionate about math but his accent makes it almost impossible to understand. Khan academy was a great help to me while taking this class. His tests are a lot like the practice problems in the book.
Professor Ling is very nice and funny but the way he taught was confusing. He doesn't let you use calculators or equation papers on your exams. He grades hard and requires you to memorize everything. He doesn't drop any tests or give extra credit. If you aren't good at math I wouldn't take this class.
Belittles students in class, tests are on nothing he taught, and if they are, impossible to solve. Harsh grader, no extra credit. Cares nothing about the students. Two midterm tests had a 53% average! Goes over only proofs and picks up speed with teaching every minute. Save yourself and avoid this teacher at all costs!
He explains the concepts very clearly! He is very helpful and the course is made easier because he grades on a curve. Great teacher, I would recommend him to anyone taking Trig. Do the homework and study the material for each test. The teacher is above average.
He loves his math. You can tell it excites him. His lectures are confusing, and is very fast except when graphing, then he takes forever. Usually one of the first out the door. No extra credit. No tests dropped. No notes on exams, but plenty to memorize. Difficult accent. About 8/40 people attend class regularly. I don't know if the rest dropped.
Prepare to be confused with his lectures. There is a huge difference between knowing your math and teaching your math. He is a very nice guy but has a hard time getting the point across.
Very enthusiastic and passionate about mathematics which was helpful for me. There is a language barrier but after a few lectures there really shouldn't be any trouble understanding him and he is really funny. If you are just looking for an easy pass there are probably easier 1050 courses, but if you really want to learn the material he is great!
I'm going to start off by saying how ridiculously difficult the tests are, worst part about the class. But he does grade on a pretty steep curve. He's very passionate about math, however, some of his lectures are difficult to follow, I recommend studying the topic before his lecture. TONS OF HOMEWORK.
Be ready to read a lot because you won't be able to follow his lectures.
I took Calculus II from Professor Ling. Bad idea. His lectures are awful, to understand any of it, you must study the material thoroughly beforehand. He didn't finish all of the material in the class. He skipped the last chapter and the second to last chapter, he dumped on us two days before the final. His tests are pretty difficult.
Lectures weren't helpful, I learned more from Khan academy than I did in class. He never gets hw back and didn't use canvas so I had no idea what my grade was. Also, a super tough grader, get one number wrong and he could take off 8/10 points He's a funny guy to listen to, but not a good teacher.
Dr Ling is really good if you adapt to his teaching style. At first he is hard for most, but if you are willing to put in your own work you will learn a lot from him. Try to read the section before going to class and you will understand much better. He may be hard to understand at first but you'll warm up to his style. Great guy.
As a person, Jun is great, as a teacher, not so much. I don't think he's ever failed anyone, ever. If you just want to get through the class with a B and not really learn the material, he's your guy! We only covered half the material that we were supposed to cover. I got C's on all my tests but somehow received a B+ for my grade.
Jun Ling is a great teacher, but the language barrier is hard to get through at first. After that, he becomes a great teacher. He goes pretty quick, but he is great in explaining his expectations. He is a fair grader and realizes that there is more than one way to do a problem. If you don't agree with his grading, he lets you talk to him about it.
I've taken two separate Calculus courses with Jun Ling, Calc 1 & Calc 3. The biggest challenge for his students is the difficulty of the subject for people who are new to it and his thick accent. Otherwise he's genuine and realistic, his tests are very reasonable. Plus if he can see that you understand the subject, he's fair and won't fail you.
Jun Ling is a great teacher, most of the bad comments about him are probably from students who do not care deeply about math and are only in their for the requirement. If you put in the time and effort to get to know Jun Ling he is a kind professor who cares deeply about all of his students success. The Tests are not hard if you read the textbook.
If you are not already fairly proficient in math then I would suggest finding a different professor. He is pretty difficult to understand. I would suggest reading each chapter before attending his lectures. He does not use canvas, so you have to meet with him if you want to know what your grade is.
You can basically skip his lectures because he just rambles on and on about the symbolism of math and never uses any numbers... but if you follow along in the text book his tests are super easy and he curves the grades so everyone usually ends up with a B or higher. He's a pretty easy A.
If you are considering taking calculus 2 from him in a block class like I did and want to pass with an A, then get ready to study 300+ hours for this course (not joking at all). He is very passionate about math, but has a thick accent that can make understanding difficult. I wouldn't recommend him if you find math a difficult subject.
Dr. Ling was a great professor I just really struggle with math. I am planning on taking it from him next semester. 90% of the grade is based on tests and he only takes one homework assignment per chapter for the other 10%. Do the homework and read before class and you'll be fine. Don't skip class that was 50% of my problem. Very nice guy.
He just goes on and on about the topic for the day and if you don't know anything before class you could get lost real quick. He knows his stuff and if you keep asking questions you'll eventually get what you need, but it was tiring. I luckily had 2 people in the class i could talk to about the stuff he talk about, but most of it went over my head.
Ling was very hard to understand. He is SO smart, but he has a hard time portraying that in class. He doesn't speak clearly, has bad handwriting, and doesn't use the textbook so it was almost impossible to learn the material without going to outside sources. The class was not homework heavy, but the tests were hard and strict grading on tests.
He is very hard to understand. The grading is very inconsistent from student to student. He doesnt answer questions very well and I think it was the language barrier that caused the problems. I learned more from YouTube and the book than I did from professor Ling. He also doesnt post grades or what the curve is on test till the end of the term.
He didn't speak English well and wasn't very engaging, this might be because it was online because of COVID. If I got distracted even for a second, when I would come back from my daydream, I would be completely lost. Then when I or a classmate would ask a question, he didn't answer it well by glossing over it and continuing with what he was saying.
I'm sure Dr. Ling is a brilliant mathematician, but that's not well expressed in his teaching skills. He isn't engaging, and his lectures are very one-sided. He rarely asks the class questions to make sure we understood. He was nice when I would talk to him, but he didn't seem to try very hard to help me raise my grade when I asked.
This is one of the worst and worst professors I have encountered in my two years of enrollment. He is very perfunctory in replying to any message no matter how you express it, and sometimes he will not even reply to your messages. And his lectures are boring and boring, even you can only get knowledge through books, maybe this class is the only one
He knows math but doesn't know how to teach. I resorted to learning Calc 1 on YouTube. He also doesn't post anything on canvas so you have to ask him what your grade is. My 3 friends all did very differently on tests and when we asked what out grades were he would pretend to think about it then say "probably a C". Worst class I've ever had.
Half of the time you cannot see where he is writing because the screen isnt centered for livestream. He does not answer questions very well. He tells you to look in the book to finish the problem which isnt very helpful. He takes WEEKS to grade tests, usually 3 weeks. I would not recommend taking calculus 3 from him.
I'm sure he is a great professor, but I wouldn't know because I can't understand him. There is a serious language barrier here, his accent makes it impossible to keep up with the lectures, and the worst part is that he tests you on what he teaches in class, not what you can learn from the book, so this class is impossible. Also a very harsh grader.
There is a language barrier and it was hard to understand him with his accent. He is clearly very brilliant, but he's one of those people who is so smart he can't dumb it down for people who don't get it. He doesn't put grades in until the end, and when you ask when grades will be updated, he say you care about grades more than learning.
Professor Ling is very passionate about the subject, but he is very proof heavy and does not like to include examples. There are no reviews for the given tests and he is very inconsistent on grading between each student. The language barrier had a huge impact and I mainly taught myself from the book. I would highly recommend a different professor.
Professor Ling was inconsistent in grading, took weeks to grade things, and is not good at lecturing. One of our test averages was a 54.9. I learned strictly from the textbook. He does not give partial credit on problems and only cares if you got the correct answer. I would transfer schools before having to take another course with this professor.
Professor Ling is an excellent mathematician, but his teaching is very formal and can be hard unless you have an advanced understanding of math. If you are willing to write down careful notes and put in hours of studying on your own you can do well, I learned that the hard way, but I'm better for it. He is kind and willing to meet and help you.
The presence on canvas is basically none. The midterm and final make up all your grade and the average on those in my class were 50 and below. With that being said the tests are also not curved. So, don't take this class unless you want to fail it.
Professor Ling wants to help all of his students learn about mathematics and the core concepts that define it. However, this means the lectures were very dense, based on his understanding, and hard to follow. With 95% of the grade being exam results (3 exams at 30-30-35%), outside learning was an absolute must if one wanted a good grade.
The biggest issue I have with him as a professor is his thick accent and his inability to teach for understanding. I ended up just not going to class about a third of the way through the semester because the things he would teach wouldn't ever help me with the homework. I ended up having to basically just teach myself the material.
I understand that he is a VERY smart man, no doubt about that. He is a genius. But he is extremely hard to understand. He weighs his exams at 90% of your grade, so you have to be near perfect to pass the class. There is no extra credit or test corrections and they are not curved. Homework is pretty much useless to your grade. Good man, bad teacher
Took his summer course so got a lot of grade curves. He is super smart and knows the material but does not translate it well to students. I spend a lot of class time teaching myself and working through homework. Also assigns work after test that material is on so I bombed first exam. Tests are 50% grade with not a lot of other work to weigh it out.
He cant teach and has a very very thick accent making it really hard to understand him. He only ever goes over proofs and doesn't ever teach you ways to actually solve problems. Half of the problems on the assignments i had never seen before in class. I never skipped class and still had no idea what i was doing.
Professor Ling was a great professor but at times communication was difficult. Some of the topics that were part of the homework were not covered in class. Everything that was on the midterms and exams was covered in class. This class was difficult because I had a hard time understanding how to solve the equations that were given to me.
