puts in no effort to teaching, only reads off powerpoint presentation and hopes noone asks questions
,a very bad teacher. For sure you'll fail this class. He doesn't make any effort to help his students. And the tests are tough. Dont take this class unless you have no other choice
his quizs are not easy, and homework too much.but he will provide some questions that related to the final exam which is helpful.
Simple, straightforward style. He is a pleasant professor and he will teach you math.
full year course but only 3 credits. REALLY TOUGH, knows his stuff, lectures doesnt read off a powerpoint or notes at all, but is a really hard marker and class is really boring
Steprans is very clear during lectures and frequently pauses to ask if anyone has questions. If someone asks a question about something, he will explain it no matter how simple it may be. His tests are fair, usually about 3-5 questions with multiple parts. My friends from another section would come to his lectures. Do your homework, it help a lot
Overall not a bad professor. If you study from the textbook and know your stuff, it's possible to do well. He will answer any questions you have. Hard to talk to as a professor though, would rather you send him an e-mail then speak face to face. Tests were not impossible, but were challenging. Better professor out of the two teaching winter 2013.
Relied on textbook heavily and only explained simple examples. He is clear in what he chooses to explain but definitely needs to better explain more sophisticated concepts. Way too many webassign quizzes and in class tests were challenging.
Terrible professor! Can not answer questions, very nervous when he teaches and just reads off slides! Take Math 1505 you do not need the pain of taking this course! Worst professor I've had at York. Almost didn't graduate on time because of this prof
Painful. Useless. GPA killer. Prof is uninspiring at best, and spends most of the time teaching theory, no practical and this quizzes/exams are designed for you to fail.
Intro analysis course taught very conversationally - the concepts are communicated well. This would be okay if he accepted an essay as a proof. He mostly does not approach how he wants students to structure the proofs, but he expects you to prove them just like he wants them. Remember: this is INTRO to analysis. Hard to approach for help, no TA.
He was a very tough marker but not a very good teacher. He often would either get sidetracked during lectures or conufused by his own lecture notes. He was extremely condescending and was visually irratated when someone would ask a question. Will avoid taking his classes from now on!!!
Dont take his class. It is hard to pass.
Class avg for test 1: 49. For Ms. Chow's class: 72. Theirs had over 10 q's, ours had 5. Their q's were simply easier. She gives out worksheets and notes; he only has useless slides. Won't solve a single problem from start to finish but gives the hardest ones on tests. He needed a calculator for the cube root of 64000. I must change him for 2nd sem.
Worst professor I have ever had. Lectures are confusing, tests are way harder than the normal material that is covered in the course. Grading is unreasonably tough and will lose entire marks for small mistakes. Even if you reach out to the professor to get extra help, he will not listen to what you have to say.
Terrible. Exams cover mostly theoretical questions which the answers to are not in any text or lectures. His section has the worst midterm marks than any other. Teaches concepts that are not taught in any other section. Just reads the slides and is terrible to talk to in person. $100 for webassign which only count for 5% of your mark. Avoid.
Absolute worst professor I've had. Will go over things in the lecture, making lots of mistakes on the way, come midterm time, nothing he teaches is on the test. Gives no guidelines as to what to study on the exam. Marking is also insanely tough, gives questions as easy as taking the limit of a function and makes them worth 35 marks. AVOID.
I had him for math 1300 and honesty he's not that bad. His tests are fair and his teaching ability is about the same as other profs.
Just a horrible professor. Doesn't know how to teach at all. His power points are completely useless. His tests are a compilation of the hardest questions you can think of. Don't take his classes unless you have no other options.
Why does he insist on doing proofs in a non proofs class?
everything about his marking scheme is stupid. he gives questions like taking the limit of a function and makes it worth 50 points. he also loves including the phrase "explain your reasoning" on midterms. just avoid him at all costs. to make matters worse, his emails always contain typos and broken english. he even made a typo on the final exam!
Everything is going to be from the book but I wasnt aware about the site called slader. Ended up struggling his TAs are also not good. Everything is going to be from assigned exercises. (Offline mode)
Incapable of teaching. Lectures/slides pointless. Avgs for Chow & Pietrowski were 70s; his were 40s/50s. Rude in emails, no greetings. All other profs have been wishing us good health during this time, except for him; could not care less about students. He represents York's carelessness, in general.
Very bad, lectures are useless and assigns work that is super hard for no reason.
This course is a disaster. In week 2 you are expected to prove sophisticated limits for the hw assignment with no preparation or resources. The lecture videos are laughably underequipped to help with these assignments. In them the prof does a decent job of explaining the general chapter concept, but then completely skims over the complicated proofs
Incapable of teaching, lecture videos are a joke compared to what is expected from you, hw assignments consist of deeply theoretical questions which the lecture videos or even textbook do not prepare you for. Tutorials go over grade 11 material while hw assignments require uni sophmore year+ level knowledge??? Did not assign list of practice q's...
Terrible teacher. If I could give 0/5 I really would but however 1 is the lowest I can do. This teacher confuses himself and others during lectures and his assignment are beyond the learning concepts. He teaches stuff that isnt even in the textbook and only makes it worse for kids having to do this course online.
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS! He cannot explain any concepts clearly. His assignments are INSANELY DIFFICULT. The homework assignments are unrelated from the lectures and you're basically on your own. He makes a lot of mistakes in his lectures and is overall not a good lecturer.
worst prof ever...
If you complain about how his assignments are harder than what is taught in the lectures, then you should probably consider dropping out. This is university, you are expected to read ahead and study on your own time. Don't expect to be spoonfed.
This prof is just too good. Take any course with this prof.
Disconnected from the students experience
Please for the love of god avoid this prof at ALL costs. Never knew someone could be this bad at explaining. Whoever made this man a professor needs to get all their senses checked. If all other choices are null, then the textbook, google, and khan academy will be your best friends. GOOD LUCK.
If you can avoid this prof, do it, although it may be extremely difficult to. I consider myself to be a relatively strong student, but I've never been as confused about a lecture as the ones in this class. The textbook and discord are going to be your friend. The only good thing is that, at least for this term, there was no final exam.
Crowdmark assignment questions are remotely related to the material covered in lectures and textbook explanations. Be prepared to learn the majority of the content from external resources (such as webassign quizes, KhanAcademy) rather than the lectures themselves. You will have prayed to every god known to man for help by the end of this course.
He has the audacity to make everyone stress over an assignment for 2 weeks and make people put so much effort into it, to say he is only marking 1 question which can be literally done in 2 minutes... Stay away from this teacher at all cost
AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you can avoid taking this class with him, please do. he's horrible at explaining his concepts and his homework assignments are insanely hard, not to mention the countless errors in the questions he formulates. if i could give him no stars i would.
I come here before every crowdmark assignment due date so I can make myself comfortable about the number of questions I could answer in that assignment in 5 hours. Oh, the prof? There is enough information written by others.
Whoever gave this prof a 5 star is out of their mind. The online quizzes are very doable but the assignments he gives are beyond difficult compared to what his lectures and the textbook teach. Avoid this prof at all costs
To the review below: he's incapable of teaching, but I guess you'd say that's my opinion. But regarding his difficult/poorly written tests, it's a fact: Last year Chow and Pietrowski's avgs were 70s and ours were 40/50s. Students from other classes were shocked at the final exam which he wrote, because they weren't used to that level of difficulty.
He's bad bad
Barely marks all of the questions, pre-recorded lectures are choppy, teaching style is boring, the questions make us think about out life choices.
Honestly, everyone who is giving him bad reviews are giving them not based off of his teaching but off of difficulty. If these people got easy As they would probably think he's a great prof. Calc is complicated, especially uni calc. This dude somehow gave a concrete into to uni calc with online lectures. He responds to all emails and works hard.
Lectures were not helpful. Very confusing teaching style I found youtube videos to be better
Tbh the assignments aren't as bad as everyone says. Ya there may be a few which are near impossible but a lot of the assignment answers r in the lectures but you have to watch them to dig them up. I honestly felt like I didn't learn much calc from him but a life lesson that there are very bad profs out there and you need to make study groups.
"Calc is complicated, especially uni calc". Really? Not the issue. The material is actually computational/straightforwad. The people that upset are those that DO study. Knowing that I could have gotten an A+ with another prof, but instead I just had to be happy that I was 25% above the average - unfair. But yeah, "Just study". Lectures are a joke.
Professor Steprans knows what he is doing, despite during the pandemic. Sure the assignments are tricky at times, but they help you understand a lot better. This can help you prepare when you take Real Analysis in second year. The people would be complaining because of how "difficult" the assignment is. If you put the time and effort, you will pass
Worst professor. Assignments Extra Hard. IF I were to mark his teaching he could do a better job as well and host zoom meetings instead of pre-recorded lectures. The only chance we get to talk to him is office hours or by email. I am pretty sure those who are getting an A in this class (yes it is possible in his class) are probably getting tutored.
To the review below. You're literally making it sound like having a "tutor" is a bad thing. Maybe it's your fault for not having one, therefore you cannot pass. His assignments are tricky, yes but we at least put time and effort into these assignments. And the quizzes, they're literally free 40%
His lectures were confusing, assignments were not based on course materials, very tough marking, not helpful if you have questions. Would not recommend this professor.
Lectures were fine, however, difficulty/complexity was not appropriate for course. Assignments often required math from areas outside the scope of the course (proof methods, sumations, etc.) This is despite the course only having high school math as a prerequisite. People with more skill/experience with math will likely do fine but avoid otherwise.
The lectures do help and the course does require you to do some work on your own as well (what course does not if you want an A). However, the assignments online were quite difficult and he would only mark some questions that were not specified. Its possible to get an A+ on your own with alot of work. Material is fine, the assignments require work.
His lectures for my class were confusing, and he disregarded the students' background knowledge. It's good that he didn't do exams but that's the only pro. I had to learn myself and lecture videos' content was very different from the major assignments. I learned he topics from textbook but some topics of lecture was not even present there. Hated it
Don't take Juris for 1300. The man turned a first year calculus course into an advanced proofing course. His lectures are slow, confusing and barely help for his assignments. He disregards the fact that many students may not have any experience in proofing. Seriously avoid if you have little experience proofing.
Thinks everyone is already at a graduate level of understanding. Lectures cover NOTHING that the assignments ask. Lazy prof with a lot of mistakes in lectures. Try to avoid him if you can. Freshman year, first semester, he made it hell.
The reviews that gave more than a 2 star are the ones who got A or A+ and are saying "you didn't study". Guess what? I also got an A+, I tried insanely hard for this course that is not even meant to be this difficult for a first year course and I still recommend to avoid this professor. He is so unbearably bad, youtube teaches better.
if you think he's bad there's 2 words for you. Git gud.
Learning calc from a different prof(good prof) made me realize how bad of a prof he is at teaching. Some people find his teaching good which is ridiculous. I personally had to watch the lectures about 3 times to get what he was saying. The assignments weren't too hard but people found them hard because his lectures suck. Don't take this prof.
A lot of what he taught wasn't in the textbook
Honestly, he's a mediocre prof. Everything is pre-recorded and he overcomplicated a lot of simple concepts such especially when dealing with epsilon-delta limits. Try getting outside help like a tutor, or use Youtube. Got a good grade, but still, he makes you work hard.
He is actually a pretty good professor. Even during his asynchronous lectures he provides a lot of examples and tries to make us understand the concepts behind these topics. Although it is not very easy, his assignments are doable and can get an A if you really try.
Very unnecessarily difficult prof. Absolutely ruined my introduction to university in first year first semester. Assignments are worth 70% but are literally nothing related to the lectures. Expects students to go into the course knowing second to third year level proof solving knowledge. Bad lectures. Take 1013 with any other professor if possible.
Avoid at all cost. You are basically paying for a course just to end up teaching yourself with no help whatsoever. Pre-recorded lectures in which he talks about apples but sends out assignments asking you to calculate the distance between each planet.
he doesnt explain anything properly in the lectures and the hw assignments are ridiculous. i have to learn everything from youtube videos and tutoring.
If u have his course drop asap. You will thank me later. His questions are ridiculous. If I could use profanity I would.
Lectures are horrible, nothing to do with the assignments. I have learned more from youtube than this bozo
He is awful. This is a 1st-year course but his assignments make it seem like a 4th-year course.
The worst prof I have had so far, I managed to pass the class but was a horrible experience. Lectures were completely useless to the coursework and homework assignments weren't related to the quizzes in any way and were much harder. Save yourself and get a different prof.
Do not take the online version of 1300 with this professor. The homework assignments (60% of your marks) are extremely difficult and time consuming which affected other modules that I took. The first assignment is the hardest (which made a considerable amount of students to drop it) However there was no exams. Only assignments and quizzes.
Avoid him at all costs. Don't even consider him. His lectures (pre-recorded videos from years ago) were useless for the questions he asked in assignments. There were only quizzes and assignments, no tests, no midterms, no final. But those assignments were hell. Literal hell. Just take another professor if you can!
The concepts are not demonstrated clearly, his examples are hard to follow. There are no lecture slides to study off of. He expects you to have read the textbook in order to have context for lecture content. Homework questions are extremely hard to understand. In general, it is hard to follow along and easy to feel extremely lost/overwhelmed
Extremely knowledgeable professor at York. I find him to be extremely useful. Go to his office hours if you have any questions and he will answer it. The people complaining about him being hard are not prepared to take his class.
He isn't the worst, but his lectures are hard to follow and often confusing. Much more worth it to just read the textbook, sit in a different prof's lecture or just take the course with a different prof. Makes the homework incredibly difficult but the quizzes are pretty easy.
Professor Steprans is one of the few good profs at York. If you have the option, absolutely take him.
Don't even bother going to his lectures because they are useless.
Taking 1300 with Dr. Steprans changed my life- ultimately for the better. His course exposed me to the beauty inherent in mathematics, and I will only be taking courses taught by him in the future.
This professor does not waste time on the basic explanations of topics, as it is expected that students have already taken high school calculus. This professor does not use powerpoints so be ready to take notes. I have also noticed that a majority of people that complain about him are the same people that are not taking notes in class.
Avoid this professor at all costs.
If you want to do well in math 1300, avoid Juris Steprans at all cost. I would even suggest only going to a different professor's lectures if it is not possible to avoid him, or just take this course another semester.
Professor Steprans is an extremely knowledgeable professor. He is passionate about the field of mathematics and wishes to pass on his knowledge and wisdom to his students. Be sure to do the practice problems he assigns, as this is university. Not high school!
This prof was very bad when it came to teaching the material, I learned more from the textbook than anything that came out of his mouth
Saying this prof bad mean you have skill issue
profesors Juris ir labakais profesors, kads man jebkad ir bijis, un ikvienam, kurs saka pretejo, jaiet uz brivajam makslam!
When he did the epsilon delta defention of a limit, I never learned about proof and quantifiers. He used this concept all throughout the course and I never understood it. Not to mention he expects us to prove stuff using concepts some of us never learned such as induction, deduction..etc. His assignments are extremely difficult for no reason.
The worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of learning from. Recorded lecture videos (took his class in 2021) were fine, but did not adequately prepare me for the assignments. Assignments were marked clearly by newton himself, and getting above a 65 was very challenging. I have never met a student who liked 1300/1310 with him.
People tend to get mad at prof. Steprans and complain about him because he teaches real math unlike many professors nowadays. His methods are rigorous and you will learn a lot from him if you put the time and effort into your studies.
I'm surprised I barley passed this guys course because lemme tell you, it's not easy. He reads straight from the textbook for his lectures and worst? THEY'RE NOT EVEN SYNCED! He could be teaching something completely unrelated in his lectures for a test your studying for. This guy is the epitome of what an awful prof is. The TEXTBOOK definition.
