Very funny. Young and can relate. Make sure you take notes if you take this class. He's very approchable if you need extra help. I looked foward to class.
He is a great teacher. he made the class really interesting. he's a great choice
I got an A, but you do have to work forit, and show interest. His tests are both multiple choice and short essays. Theres also a project i believe 5 pgs. He gives extytra credit too.
Keeps things interesting....
This teacher is awesome and not bad to look at while you are listening to his interesting lectures. I got an A in his class, his tests are multiple choise, true-false and include essays as wells. best of luck, great teacher.
He is so nice and helpful. I recommend to everyone even if you're from a different ethnicity. SO COOL!!
Cool teacher, keeps lectures interesting, even when lectures are long they are still interested.
he utilized great powerpoints and wants students to suceed. I enjoyed all his classes and the extracredit certainly helps which made my grade over 100%!! I really recomend this professor for an ethnic class...if i can i'll try to take the next class.
you can pass this class if you really want to
this teacher is great. he explain everything. he is always there to help you in all what you need. the class is so interesting. i got an A . He offers alot of extra credit but if you study you don"t need it. just pay attention quizzes are easy and you will pass. i strongly recommend him
Great professor but dont get decieved by his appreance. He looks laid back but he demands just as much as any professor would. It seems as if he sincerly wants his students to succeed unlike other professor that careless. There will never be a day that you dont find your self laughing in his classroom, so if you have a chance take his course.
This Chicano Culture class was not easy and not hard. Just be sure to do your homework and study for tests you'll do fine. Tests are consisted of multiple choice and essays. As far as homework goes it is questions from the readings. There is also a project that you have to do and he will provide the topics. He gives his lectures using PowerPoint so
I wish this guy would teach every class I have to take. I LOOOOOVED him. He's not easy, but his lectures were always interesting and he genuinely wants his students to succeed. The tests are essay, but he gives you the questions beforehand, as well as the outline you'll need to answer them. Really. Take his class. You'll learn so much.
Justin is a professor that has probably has the highest level of energy like Mrs. Salinas, Engl. dep. Akers is the best instructor for History I have ever taken, please take his classes, you will learn, laugh, and become more knowledgable as far as historic events between Latino, Hispano countries and the USA including NAFTA JUstin you are the best
I DON'T RECOMMEND HIM. HE'S VERY DEMANDING, HE GIVES POP QUIZES LIKE CRAZY, AND HE'S JUST MAKES THE CLASS WAY TOO HARD.
He is by far the most organized knowlegable, dedicated teacher I've seen yet. His lectures are accompanied by powerpoint, he hands out descriptions with questions regarding all lectures for essay tests. If you don't understand something, he never gets that look some teachers get. He has expectations and he will do what he can to help you succeed.
Mr. Akers has a lot of knowledge on his field of study. Taking his class is a challenge, but it will help you on the upperlevel classes once you go to a 4 year university. Take the challenge, its good for your mind.
Prof. Akers is very passionate about Chicano Studies. He lectures off of powerpoint, and has discussions/quizzes off of required reading. Exams are comprised of multiple choice, T/F, and essay questions. There's also one 5-7 pg. paper or project due at the end of semester. Attendance is recommended, and will never feel like a c****.
great teacher, learned a lot from just one of his classes, took another chicano class with another teacher and felt like a waste of time. really smart teacher but you have to get adjust to his style or you might end up not passing cause he can be somewhat hard for some people
Mrs. Akers is a great professor. His letures are intesting and if you take note and read the books you would get an "A"
Great teacher very laid back and very fun. He tries to help all his students and you do learn a lot. Every class is very fun, attend classes do the readings and participate and you will pass the class.
This professor does not try to help his students. He trys to be funny, but he isn't. it's very hard to feel comtroble in his class. It sucks because there not alot of chicano professor here @ city but take someone esle.
His a great teacher just do your work and read the book and you will get an A
As long as you attend class, read the chapters, and participate...you'll get an A. He does not belive in TESTS! Awesome teacher, real activist too! :)
One of the few instrcutors who takes teaching to heart. You willlearn alot from him while attending his classes. He may have what many would consider a serious character, but sometimes seriousness is better than being funny.
HE IS AN AWESOME CHICANO STUDIES TEACHER. HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO TEACHING THE SUBJECT. I HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE WHEN I HAD HIM AS A TEACHER. YOUR GUARANTEED AN "A" IN THE CLASS IF YOU DO THE WORK WHICH ISNT MUCH WORK. BESIDES HE IS HOT!!!!
Very nice guy, tries to help students that are struggling. Attendance is mandatory, and his class it is a writing class. I feel that I didnt learn as much history, dates and facts, he concentrates more on how you "feel" about the history and makes you work in group with a topic that is not related to the time period of the class.
at times he can be sarcastic, arrogant, and displays a lack of faith in students. the class content is very relevant to real life, but there is a ton of work. since there is no tests you must do the homework or you will fail.
First of all he is not hot. Second, this class is easy and he is very passionate about what he teaches. He does come off rude and arrogant. I guess no sense of humor. To me, it feels like a high school class with the students he has n the way he disciplines. Just do your hw!
He is one of the best professor I have ever had! Being in his Learning Community was such a transformational experience! If you can take his LCom you should take it! :)
One of the best professors I've ever had.Very passionate ,and strict but fair with students. Taking his classes being a mother was a challenge for all the homework he request to his students, but I did well and earn an A with honors. It definitely helped me to learn and love the history of the Chicano movement and the history of my country Mexico.
Great Professor. Very clear on what he wants. Just show up to class do homework(a Must) and you should have no problem passing this class. i would stay away from a writing class while taking this class or 141A. lots of writing to be done in both classes.
well. his a good teacher BUT can be a bit boring sometimes..lectures are not consistant all the time but farely on time. he can have an attitude somes times and a bit rude . overall good person.
He is a compassionate professor, is always willing to help you with any problems you may have with the assignments and is always praising students for their hard efforts whether they have an A or a C. Just do the readings and assignments and you'll do well in his class.

He is a great professor. I learned a great deal and I am actually looking forward to taking the next section of this course. He doesn't give exams but there are four projects to be completed. He is sensitive to all learning styles and does his best to incorporate them into his lessons. Lots of homework and projects are time consuming but worth it.
Akers is the best teacher, very informative, and knows his stuff. There is a lot of reading, but no hw whatsoever, unless its extra credit. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. 1 research paper, 1 project (you choose between art, media, writing, food). Hes good at answering emails too. I would highly recommend for those who dnt like histo
A good class for those who do not believe in America. Racism is openly tolerated in his class and yes a lot of homework is required. You do not need to be able to spell to take this class. No he is not hot. Lots of information and very knowledgable.
He's a good teacher. Plus he was a nardcore punk!!
Akers is alright...the class is super easy! but I did learn a lot of interesting stuff! I am Mexican and White and yes he deff is on the Mexican side! haha. And he does have an attitude sometimes, not a very approachable person! On the final presentation we had, I did a great job on it and it's like he had to take off one point! Not cool! :)
I think he is one of the best professors City has!! I learned so much from him. At first you might think the class is hard but if you do your work, read and do your work. You will learn and appreciate what Justin has to offer. He gives great lectures. I took him for both 141a and 141b. If all teachers taught the way he does, I'd never leave school!

He is the best! but be ready for plenty of homework.
A GREAT AND HELPFUL TEACHER. NOT TO SERIOUS BUT HAS A PASSION FOR WHAT HE TEACHES... VERY INTERACTIVE AND YOU WILL HAVE FUN IN CLASS. HAS VERY FUN PROJECTS! I WSH ALL TEACHERS WERE LIKE HIM! JUST MAKE SURE TO TELL HIM TO USE THE BOOKS... I HAD TO BUY THREE AND WE ONLY USED ONE!
Hands down the best Professor to teach Chicano Studies. Not only is he very knowledgeable about the course work but, you can also see the passion he has for it. Nice to see a Professor who truly enjoys his job. You might think he is difficult at first but, that is not the case. Be prepared to do homework and to learn alot about Chicano History.
His lectures are boring he gives alot of reading and writing homework, projects and essays. Extra credit available. He tries to be funny but doesnt work.
Easily my favorite professor to date. He's tough but comprehensive. He strives to increase student critical and analytical skills. His courses are designed with student strengths in mind. He's passionate, knowledgeable, and fun. His classes are at university level - something fairly rare but much needed. Take his class. Highly recommended.
He is one of the best professors of city colleges. he is very organized, assigments on time, we did different activities not just lecture. He is very compationate and fun and very easy to aproach. The class cosists of readings, short analysis, discusions, theres not tests but yes you have to do a project of your choice and write 2 papers.
VERY GOOD TEACHER! loved this class. TAKE HIS CLASS
Great teacher, he's so passionate about literature. There's lots to read but, it's totally worth it you will definitely get your education's worth with him. Loved the class.
He is so passionate about his teachings. Very smart and super humble! Always willing to answer any questions and is an amazing professor!
Easy Professor. Show up to class everyday, do all your work and bring a recording device for class lectures. If you do all of this you will get an A with no problem.
It is a fun and interesting class but I felt like his lectures got off track a lot. It wouldn't of been a problem but our essays had to be written off our notes, and it was a challenge. He assigned ALOT of reading too, mostly from blackboard and not the book i purchased.I feel like he spent alot of time motivating us instead of actually teaching...
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He has a unique way of teaching that is creative and passionate. He knows his stuff and is very "Viva la Raza!" As long as you attend class, Participate and do the homework, it's easy to pass with an A. Extra Credit was offered. Can't wait to take 141B with him! Know MLA format!
He is the best professor easy to understand just read and you will past his class
Work is consisted with the every day life experiences of the student learning process. Article readings reveal past history events and historical figures who helped delop the world we live in today. Very interesting for it engages student to explore and think criticaly to current events. Colaborative work and plenty of resources to enhance student
I was amazed by what I learned in this class. Great instructor, I want to take more of his classes in the future. I recommend any one to take at least one class from him. Muchas gracias!!!
Professor Akers is extremely intelligent, passionate, and funny as well. Besides being majorly attrached to him, he impresses the hell out of me! He does assign a lot of work, but I find it interesting. I agree with other comments about losing focus on lectures. This occasionally cause issues when it was time to write content based essays.
He is a funny.I love it when he use blackboard to show the grade. He gave a lot of readings, homework do.You have 8 reading,1 project, and 3 essays. He'll start from world news before class start.I spend a lot of time outside class for class.be prepared.overall,he is a nice prof, but I won't take him again if I don't have time to do homework.
Great professor, awesome class, great class overall
Hands down best professor I have ever had, he is smart, creative, educated, funny, simply awesome ! highly recommend his class, there is a lot of reading and critical thinking involved, he also makes everyone in the class participate and really engage in the class lectures so be prepared!
Very nice guy !
Akers is San Diego City College. You will be enlighten from the first day of the semester to the last day of the semester. The hidden history that you learn will touch your heart and will encourage you to think of yourself differently. Thank you Akers.
The most amazing Chicano studies professor! He is very passionate of what he teaches which makes assisting his class much enthusiastic. I learned so much in his classes, too bad he doesn't teach any other courses, I would take him again in a heart beat. His class isn't hard but you do a lot of reading, some writing, and projects.
Amazing, you learn a lot... I take his LC class. Very easy
Great teacher. Has a different teaching style than most. No tests. U do write a lot of essays but they aren't hard. U don't need to buy a book, cuz he provides u with the readings. Easy A if u do all the work. Involves students in the lectures n loves class discussions.
Great professor, offered the sources of his knowledge to his fellow students. Greatly appreciated. Replaced textbooks with long readings that we had to print ourselves, but the cost difference is worth it; c'mon spend your change on ink. On this note, the readings were of great selection & honestly kept me intrigued. Awesome teach, you'll learn.
Loved this class. Learned so much. Professor made class lectures very interesting and enjoyable. Would really recommend taking any of his classes. Homework was submitted online, gave extra credit and extra points for perfect attendance and NO TESTS!! Would take him again.
Everyone likes that he doesn't have test, his readings are ridiculously long and too many assignments at a time! Be careful with challenging his point of view on a situation he will attack you and say you're wrong. I thought a professor should be there to encourage you to think differently not to attack you bc you think differently than them!
Mr. Akers is an excellent professor. You can tell he is truly passionate about teaching the class. My only problem is that he assigns too many projects at the same time. You have to work hard for an A and turn in everything on time.
AKERS IS AMAZING! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! HE IS AN INSPIRATION ALWAYS TRYING TO HELP VERY CLEAR NO BOOK JUST READINGS EVERY OTHER WK DEFINITELY COMMITED AS A TEACHER DEF LOVES WHAT HES DOING! THERE ARE PRESENTATIONS BUT HE GIVES YOU THE OPTION OF AN ESSAY INSTEAD IF YOUD LIKE. SOME GROUP WORK HANDS DOWN HE IS DEF ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS IVE HAD!
He is a good teacher, not very strict very outgoing. I can tell he enjoys what he teaches. I love how he doesn't require a textbook, he emails us all the readings and we can print it out if we want. This class is easy if you turn in all assignments. Take him!(:
He was nice and easy going, clear and enjoyed his job.
I really enjoyed his class and he does make you do a lot of group work, you have to select and read 8-15pg of reading packet your choice to print it out or not. There are no tests in his class and he makes you critically think too, but over all it was good class. Do the work, show up, participate in class, and you will be guaranteed a good grade.
Second time I've rated a prof. Anyways probably the most respected teacher I've ever met. As fair as they come. Definitely passionate. Cares about attendance and participation. Lots of group work. No test. I would even cross the line into inspirational. Extremly well informed and adaptive. I could even say the best overall teacher I've ever had.
Great professor!!! He gives no tests but be prepared to read a lot and give group presentations after every reading. No textbook needed, he posts all the readings on blackboard!
Lots of group projects. Noticed he is bias and pretty opinionated . Must participate. No textbook. Overall he is okay but i didnt learn anything. Easy A.
honestly out of all the professors I've had, hes my favorite. He just makes you want to pay attention and learn. Good homework assignments, group projects are cool. If you fail this class you really need help then! Be ready to read tho, no textbook required so save some money with him !
Best Professor ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! easy A!
Professor Akers is a real treat and I wish more professors were like him. There are a lot of assignments given out, however they aren't that bad. One major assignment requires you to either join a student club, write a book report, or submit content to an online student driven magazine. Lots of extra credit opportunity.
Professor Akers is an amazing professor! He made me love my culture even more and I am continuing my studies in Chicano studies. He gives powerful readings from amazing authors. Very respected. Gives a lot of extra credit. Took him for two semesters. He loves what he does. Take him!
Professor Akers is a great professor! He makes learning Chicano history enjoyable. There are no tests or books, just a lot of online readings that you should take the time to read. He's very passionate and easy-going, I would definitely recommend taking him for 141A & B! As long as you work diligently and show up to class, it'll be a breeze.
Second time taking him! The class is styled much like 141A, with the addition of a few more projects and different readings. My only complaint would be that he usually runs out of time when talking about a topic, and that time could be used for the students to work on upcoming group projects. Other than that, I 100% recommend him!
Love his class. Get ready to read a lot. Do all the assignment pretty sure you will pass the class
One of the best professors I'd ever had in my year at Community College, knowledgeable about the topics, interesting and amazing conversations in class. Get ready to read and participate in class. Don't take him if you aren't ready to challenge yourself.
Spends the whole class time ranting about the Chicano condition instead of sticking to the curriculum. Expect to sit there for 1.5 hours and listen to him say the same things over and over again with the occasional group discussion. Try getting on his good side early on or he will grade unfairly.
Professor Akers is a great professor. Im a freshman in college and this was a great class to start with. He lectures about his material however theres no quizzes or tests or hw. Your grade is dependent on participation and group projects. Tons of extra credit.
Great professor, very professional in his work and also interesting topics. Very strict with punctuality and attendance.
Hes very passionate about class discussions, he can get out of topic sometimes and there are no test or quizzes but there is A LOT of homework and group projects, if you dont like working and having group discussions dont take this class. Other than that hes a good understanding person.
His class was fairly heavy with readings, but its clear what he is looking for. The readings were a little difficult to understand on my own but luckily, the professor uploads a video explaining what was happening in that period. Make sure to do the readings and their responses! The class revolves around them, so take your time with them!
He is a great teacher. A lot of information to take in when he lectures. He gives a lot of readings for homework and they were really hard for me to understand. He will help you if you need help with homework.
Easy class, I do wish he would open the class more than one week at a time so you could work ahead. The weekly reading became annoying after a bit as the pages were scanned in and hard to read, I wish there was more weeks of watching films or podcasts to review and create discussions on. Over all great class.
He gives you homework do each week. Do the homework get full points! He doesn't teach you, it's more of a read the article, your thoughts, and comment on two classmates. Pretty easy and interesting topics we read about! Take him!
The class consists of weekly readings (can be long) short written analysis on them and class discussions. Three major artistic projects. He's an easy grader if you show genuine effort. His lectures aren't very structured and it's more of a large group discussions. Overall a good professor and an easy class.
He uses PDF readings, so there's no need to buy anything, and if you are in a rush: skimming is your friend. The assignments are relatively simple, but participation matters, so say anything relevant to get cred. He's laid back and is willing to talk if you have concerns. He goes on tangents so it's hard to see what to take notes on, just wing it.
There are readings every week and at least 2 continuous activities. You need to read a lot and give good arguments and debate to get a high grade. The teacher does not answer private messages, so it is difficult to communicate with him if it is an online class. In the first weeks it provides extra credit by attending events, take advantage!
Professor Akers was awesome. His lectures can get a little off track, but it's interesting and related. Readings are normally < 20 pages per week, the projects weren't too involved, and the rubrics are straightforward with grading. The are plenty of extra credit opportunities. He's a bit of a slow grader, but he's great otherwise.
Profe was literally one of the best I've ever had, excellent course through and through! Lectures were inspiring, readings were well chosen! Overall a great guy!
If you dislike long, dense readings and analysis, I would avoid this class. Lectures are long, boring, and often off-topic. Grading is slow and harsh, and the criteria are unclear. Attendance is a major part of your grade, so be sure to attend every class. On the plus side, there are no exams or essays, and lots of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Akers' CHI141B class has a fair amount of reading, but the topics are interesting. Engage with the discussions and you'll do well. I found unstuck ai and ChatGPT really helpful for preparing. Attendance is mandatory, but the workload is manageable overall.
Substantial time spent weekly on reading, analysis, and response to the text. Dropped because the course content was heavy and uninteresting.
This class involves a lot of reading and group discussions, with no tests or quizzes—just one big project at the end of the semester. If you're looking for a course that focuses on engagement and collaboration, this might be a great fit.
Professor Chacon is a chill guy, he is very understanding if you need to be upset for a important reason. The readings he gives out on the analysis are very interesting and has very informative text. I liked this class so much I would definitely take it again.
um hell no.
I also took 141A with him before. Similar experience. His lectures are fun and go into a lot of depth. The readings are usually under 30 pages. The assignments are clear and straightforward. You need to attend the lecture for a decent amount of assignment content. He's a slow grader and can get a little off track during lecture, but he's awesome.
Be ready to read long texts and write super in depth analytical assignments(basically papers). Each 8 question analysis prompt for readings is the same=boring.I was so stressed all semester b/c of super slow grading so I barely knew how I was doing. Half of our assignments weren't graded until after the semester ended. No late homework allowed.
he's chill. I like him. that class was alot of lectures, but overall it was very informative.
Mostly lecture. An incredible amount of extra credit, if you start failing. Grades assignments late. Peers also started using Ai and he resorted to in class work instead of homework halfway through the semester. Students tend to make him go off topic lol. I loved the class. I'm looking forward to taking his other courses.
