Very helpful if you ask him. Willing to meet with you to review stuff even if its not his office hrs sometimes. VERY ORGANIZED and clear. His tests are really hard but fair if you have studies. Only thing about him is he hates it when you are late!!!! But he so cute when he is angry
Dr. Brown is a really good teacher, he is very clear and takes his tests straight from the power points in class. He gives pop quizes at the begenning of class sometimes, which are actually harder than the tests. Just review your notes after every class and you should be fine. If you study you can do well in his class.
The person below does NOT know what they're talking about. Dr. B let us choose the grading scale. We misunderstood some things, but everything worked out in the end. He was very accommodating. The person below obviously didn't come to class nor pay attention when they did. Over 50% of the class will get an A. Dr. B is a great, intelligent teacher.
N'sci was an easy class. ~12 quizzes (get to drop one), and an optional final. The quizzes are the attendance policy. Very fair questions straight from the notes he gives you. No book. The material was kind of broad and not as in detail as I hoped but it is an "intro" course. I think he'd be a very engaging teacher if the class wasn't so early
Good overview of a broad range of topics in neuroscience. Not much of an emphasis in understanding details. Dr. B is extremely fair and gives you every opportunity to do well. If you put some effort into class you will do well. Pop quizzes are annoying but helpful. Dr. B is very receptive to questions and discussion.
Tough class but he was pretty good at explaining the concepts and I found it interesting. Fair grader but tends to go a little fast in class. However, the slides are online to review later or print out. 3 tests, final, lab grade, 5 assignments throughout, and 5 quizzes.
Thought Brown was okay. He goes very quickly through slides so you can't take your own notes, but he does put the power points online which is helpful for printing out or reviewing for tests. Quizzes outside of class which he announces in class, so make sure you go. Definitely a lot of work. Good alternative to Garrison, but is no Kancler.
B+ A- is defiantly attainable. 5 easy assignments that bring up your grade. 6 online quizzes. He announces quizzes in class so make sure you go because they are due that night. He tests mostly from his power points so those are helpful too.
This guy might be one of the best teachers at JMU. He makes everything so clear and gives us every opportunity to get an A. He uses really great examples that connect to what we're learning, so its easy to remember. The class was really interesting for an "Intro" class. I highly recommend this class if you're interested in the subject!
His lectures are very interesting, and you can really tell he is interested in the material. However, he is extremely unapproachable. Terrible 1 on 1 help. His tests are very tough--seems likes test bank tests. That being said, there are a lot of points to earn therefore quizzes and lab can make up for terrible test grades. Avoid.
Dr. Brown is a good teacher. He goes quickly but effectively. Go to class, study a decent amount and it is relatively easy to do well.
This class appeared to be easy, however tests were based off of random precise questions that were not clear in class. He was not very approachable to ask questions during office hours.I would avoid if possible.Multiple choice tests, with 6 quizzes and 5 papers to raise your grade. But not enough to help. I got a B, but was disappointed in class
Prof Brown is a great physiology teacher. The material is really challenging but he presents it as easy as he can. He makes a lot of real life connections which helps. The tests are hard but if you put in the study hours, you can get an A.
Brown is one of the best professors I've had yet! Tests are challenging but he helps to prepare you and its easy to get a B if you put in the effort! He tries to make real life connections to difficult material so that it is easier to understand! Quizzes and Assignments are a good grade booster too!
Dr. Brown is the best! He breaks the subject down really well, and is very easy to understand. The material can be hard, but he will go over it with you again & again until you get it. Very helpful and easy to talk to. A great guy all around!
This class was a lot easier than I thought it would be. That being said, the class itself is not too easy. You definitely have to study but Professor Brown makes everything more enjoyable and clear. He is an email away whenever you need help and overall I liked him very much as a teacher.
Neuroscience seemed intimidating but professor Brown made everything very clear. Pop quizzes, easy tests, everything is on powerpoint or notes, no textbook. Take this class!
I got a D in his class, but I suck at neuro. Anyway, he's very funny, very helpful, NO BOOK, and he's great. He'll restore hope in humanity for good professors
Justin is an awesome professor! He's really cool and you can tell he knows his stuff. The material is pretty hard, so it's nice to have a professor who keeps things relaxed. He makes a lot of good analogies and posts his powerpoints and lecture note outlines online, which is helpful.
Best teacher ever! Honestly take this class. This isn't the easiest class but Professor Brown is so easy to follow and understand, does a great job at explaining things and offers all of the materials online! attendance isn't mandatory, but I never missed, lectures are so helpful in understating it all
Awesome professor. Hard class, but best of 270 professors (or so I've heard). Puts some lectures online for studying which is really helpful. Again, hard material but explains it well and isn't out to trick you on the tests. Study previous tests for the final. I learned a TON in this class!!
I usually don't get on here regardless of how much I enjoyed a professor, but not only does this guy keep the class laid back as possible, he instill passion about the material he's teaching. Does not make the material any harder than it should be and books aren't necessary. BIO 270 and BIO 301... my two favorite classes at JMU.
Tends to get flustered when lecturing, but for the most part he is a good professor. He tells you exactly what you need to know to pass, and gives out outlined notes with his powerpoints. We didn't even need a textbook for this class. I would take his class again.
I love this class online! Professor Brown provided us with online voice recorded lectures, Word document outlines, as well as PowerPoint presentations. All of the information on the test comes directly from these resources, so you do not have to get the textbook. His lectures were usually humorous. This class was fairly easy for what it is.
Dr. Brown is a great professor. This is one of the best biology classes I've had at JMU. The pop quizzes are annoying but they make sure you stay on top of the material. Test are very straightfoward , straight from the notes. Easy A if you just study. His lectures are hilarious too and help you understand and retain the information.
Amazing pick for any bio majors. Dr. Brown really has a passion for teaching and really wants you to learn the material. I loved his great stories and little 'fun facts' to help us remember. Pop quizzes are a crucial part of your grade but are really fair. Make sure you show up to class and show up on time, he hates tardiness. 10/10 recommend!
3 tests (50 MC questions) and a final. Online lectures are nice so you can rewind and re-listen. Online quizzes and lecture assignments are nice things that other 270 classes don't have. Tests can be difficult but come straight from his outlined notes. Questions can be tricky but do able. Staying on schedule is important!
I would 100% recommend taking this class online. His online lectures are amazing!! Plus you can pause and rewind them whenever you want. He also gives you outlined lecture notes which are exactly what will be on the test. You come to campus to take the exams. Quizzes and assignments are online.
I would definitely say his course is easier than others because he gives you notes and explains everything you need for exams on the lectures. His tests aren't bad at all, but he has some weird questions. His office hours aren't too helpful though, he'll just repeat what's on the slides.
He is a natural teacher. He seems born for his job, and is so good at explaining things, and keeps the lectures interesting. I always look forward to this class. He does give pop quizzes throughout the semester, but I appreciated that because they were never too hard and it kept me reviewing the material. Great professor, HIGHLY recommend!
Truly good professor, but Neuro is obviously hard. Gives eleaborated notes along with powerpoints. No book. Study hard and you can do well in the class. Pop quizzes every so often so keep up with the material. Wouldn't recommend if you have no psych background (trust me, it helps). Kind of intimidating, DON'T BE LATE or get on his bad side
While any physiology class is hard I really thing Brown's is the best one to take. I think I have learned the most in this class than any other course thus far. The tests are hard but as long as you study his study guide an A is achievable. He does not want you to fail just expects you to stay on top of things. Three tests cumulative final.
I am sure Dr. Brown is great in person, but don't take him for online BIO301. He posts his lectures with voice over and gives notes. His "lectures" are about half the time that is allotted for a normal in person class, meaning we lack half the reinforcement. His tests are tricky and unfair when we have had no real classes or time ask/clarify info.
Dr. Brown understands that COVID is rough and so he made the class all online from the start which was nice to have consistency. Each week was the same set up so following along with the class is easy. Tests make up your grade but are fair if you master the material. Take him! He is great
I took bio270 with brown this semester and not gonna lie its a tough class. His class is completely asynchronous so you have to make sure youre staying on top of your work and following a good pace if you dont want to get behind. tests are definitely tough but if you really take the time to study the lectures hard you should be fine
I loved Bio270 lecture with Dr. Brown! Taking this course online isnt for everyone, but if you know how to discipline yourself & stay on track with watching his lectures youll be fine. He types up the notes for you which makes things easier, & everything is asynchronous. I recommend going to his office hours to review questions you miss on exams
This is less a review about Dr. Brown but more about online BIO 270. I took this class because Dr. Brown had great reviews, but because this class is basically entirely self-taught, it didn't really matter. Don't take this class unless you are incredibly self-disciplined and can dedicate hours teaching yourself the information.
This course is done on your own time, which makes the course that much harder. You essentially have to teach yourself the material. Exams are your only grade other than weekly quizzes that are 10 minutes for 10 questions. The time limit made the quizzes that much more difficult. Exams consist of 5 or more chapters, which is A LOT of info.
Completely asynchronous class however the exams are in person. You have to teach yourself everything. Quizzes are impossible with 10 minutes for 10 questions with some questions having 7 answer choices, no one can read that fast and conceptualize material at the same time. Not sure he does anything but take scantrons to the grading center after.
SO unfair i was under the impression this class was in person, its why i took Dr.brown, bc his ratings were so good and im a senior having to retake this over maymester because the entire thing was learned through powerpoints yet 4 in person tests with 10 minute 10 question quizzes. SO unfair how this teaching style is allowed after covid has ended
Do NOT take this professor. He does not teach anything. The lectures are online (async) and the exams are in person on a scantron. I'm not sure how the BIO department allowed every BIO 270 course to have in-person lectures with online OPEN-NOTE exams and then have only one professor have online lectures and in-person CLOSED-NOTE exams. Seems off...
Do not recommend for BIO270. You will practically be teaching yourself due to asynchronous lectures. Material too complex for prerecorded PowerPoint slides. 10 minute 10 question quizzes? Impossible! An online class with in person exams, however others are in person with online, OPEN note exams. Not at all fair. Final is Cumulative on 20 chapters
Worst class I have ever taken at JMU. Not sure how he is allowed to make this class completely asynchronous with in person exams while the other sections are in person with online, open note exams. Not to mention a cumulative final on almost 20 chapters with each powerpoint being about 60 slides long. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
How is this man making lectures asynchronous but exams in person while other sections have in person class and OPEN NOTE online exams. my friends in another section are all getting As and hardly did any work and I have to retake the class despite the thousands of hours i put into studying for this class
Avoid at all costs unless you want to be miserable all semester.
This class was the only section of BIO 270 that was completely asynchronous and had in-person tests while all other sections had online open-note exams. Dr. Brown also used another professor's lecture videos and not his own so it was unclear as to what he was looking for in knowing the material. This issue needs to be addressed.
This class was the worst one I have taken at JMU. I don't understand how this is an online course with multiple chapters to do a week but yet we have to take exams in person. Avoid this class at all costs unless this is the only class you are taking. Not to mention we had our last class exam and our cumulative final exam two days apart.
Dr. Brown conveys the material well however, he is an extremely by the book professor and the way his class is structured is not in the best interest for his students only for him, which makes him and the course difficult to deal with, I would not recommend taking BIO270 with this professor, he is NOT understanding whatsoever in any fashion.
His recorded lectures were good at explaining the material, but I spent hours and hours per week watching & studying them. His tests are the hardest multiple choice tests I have ever taken. He does not seem to care how u do. There were 48 hrs btwn the final and last test; he had no office hrs btwn the 2 and didn't go on email, tests r only grades.
Dr. Brown's lectures were made for 12-year old's, which made the tests and quizzes extremely difficult. The averages on the tests were around 60-70 and he doesn't give any extra credit because he is very "by the book". He gave us only 2 days to study for the final because he made us take a test 2 days before the final.
Dr. Brown's BIO 270 class is completely asynchronous, so it is reasonable to expect that much of the learning is independent with recorded lectures. However, the exams are extremely difficult with questionable wording. Do not take Dr. Brown if you're not ready to be responsible for your own learning.
His class is extremely hard, has lots of pop quizzes. He is very sarcastic and a jerk, so be prepared. He does not care about your grade.
His exams became more difficult as the semester progressed. I started out in Dr. Hynds section and switched to him. Brown had MORE resources for success (charts, blank study slides, personalized notes, and tied things together at the end of his slides). The exams were closed everything, but his questions were more straightforward than Hynds.
Great professor, really engaging lectures. Funny and relatable person. the content was super interesting & answers questions. You really need to study for exams, but besides that not incredibly hard. (note: I don't think the content was too hard but I had a bit of neuro background already.) One of my top 3 favorite classes I have ever taken at JMU.
This course was a challenge. You have to be able to use the many resources he gives you. But the online lectures are fun and there are lots of ways he explains things like using pictures, videos, charts, and notes. I really used the notes alot. The test questions are challenging but straight from the notes. Study hard and a good grade is doable.
This is what a college class should be! It isn't easy but it is worth it. Work hard and a good grade can be earned. He gives the outlined notes & tests are from that. Gives powerpoints too and engaging lectures. Coming to class helps. He really makes it up to you if you want a good grade. You get all the tools. The work is up to you.
Try to take him for phys and bio 301! He is very organized and gives his students outlined notes which are very helpful for studying. He makes his class interesting. The only thing is that there are pop quizzes but make sure you review the notes and study for it and you will be good. Just BE prepared for the pop quizzes.
BIO301 with Brown is one of my favorite classes I've taken at JMU. Dr. Brown is very knowledgeable and lectures were always interesting and engaging. There are pop quizzes- I just reviewed my notes before every class and it was fine. Exams are not too difficult and usually just multiple choice and T/F.
Dr. Brown was funny in lecture, but not super welcoming after lecture. You are graded on your best 4/5 exams: 4 50Q exams & 1 100Q cumulative final you can exempt. He gives random pop quizzes (usually on Fridays or before an exam) 1 drop. He gives you access to his own notes and covid video lectures to study with. Material overlapped with MCAT stuf
Dr Brown made this class really engaging. I looked forward to going to class. Levtures were interesting and easy to follow. There are 5 exams and a final. He drops your lowest test grade. He does give pop quizzes but the questions come directly from the slides. Highly recommend this class
Challenging class but he made it manageable. The work and resources were all there at the start. He wants you to learn but you have to do the work. The online lectures that you can pause and replay, and notes he gives you are the best. Wish I'd waited to take it in summer when I have more time but otherwise, gr8 class. Best online class I've had.
Loved this class in the summer w Dr B. Much better than in the fall. The material gets harder as you go so you have to learn the basics well. I loved the material b/c is was one of the only classes that really studies medicine, which I'm into. Need to stick with the schedule he provides. Lectures were well done and could rewind and re-review.
Finally, I study actual medicine! Tired of chemistry, ecology, biochem, & other stuff I have to take for med school. This class is actually how the body works and its fun. It may be the hardest I've ever worked (except O Chem) but it was the most interesting. Material builds as semester goes. But the lectures are really fun. Tough tests. but fair.
Dr Brown was a good professor for physiology. The concepts are hard, but he tries to make them understandable and gives you lots of good resources. In the lectures he was funny too which sometimes helped to break up the frusturating nature of the class. The tests are hard, but they are open note so manageable as long as you pay attention to notes.
quizzes on every chapter but drops the 4 lowest. exams were online open note but they were still very difficult so prepare in some way. lectures were veryyy long and i recommend take your time and write down everything because sometimes what he says pop up on the exams. responds quickly to emails and is a great professor.
All online but well organized. Lots of helpful lecutres and really interesting. some chapters are longer than others. Tests were open notes but really made you think. You have to prepare in advance since there isn't time to look stuff up all the time. Great class
Challenging class. but a good one. Best I've had at jMU actually
Straightforward & organzied class. Show up on time, take pop quizzes, review notes and it was fine. Learned a lot. Even drops 1 low exam if you take final which helped me a lot. Drops 1 low quiz. He loves to teach and has fun with it. Lets the class choose the last few lecture topics. He big on being equitable so don't expect special treatment.
Dr. Brown is very funny and very knowledgable about the subject matter. I learned a lot even though my grade does not reflect it. I swear I learned the material from his lectures, but for some reason I could. not. do well on his exams. I'm not even a bad test taker, its the phrasing of his questions specifically. Still love him, also, go to class.
Material is somewhat hard but Dr. Brown makes it bearable. I finished with an 86.98 (B). No rounding or any leeway (get sick, get a 0)
Loving this semester's course! It ramping up in difficulty but I'm actually learning about medicine unlike other classes (chem). 100%online but quizzes and exams open book/note but timed. Can't look up every answer. But if you study, its manageable. Great class so far
This class is hard no matter who you have but Dr. Brown makes it manageable. The class is composed of quizzes and tests only so you must put time and effort into this class to succeed. Getting a good grade in this class is possible if you apply yourself and Dr. Brown is more than willing to help you get there. Quizzes and tests are timed.
Took this class online. He give you a schedule but its up to you to stick to it. Quizzes help motive me to stay with material. Hard class but it actually helped me prepare for my more advanced classes later. Challenging tests but pretty fair if you study. Glad I took it online since I can go back and review hard material & skip easy stuff.
Took class online over the summer as a 4 week condensed course, def couldn't have gotten the grade I wanted while taking this class on vacation, but just review over and over, takes time to fully process everything and is a lot of info (same amount of effort you would give to bio290). If 4 weeks of ur summer isn't hectic w/ travel/work def worth it
not an easy class, harder than anatomy but more easy to take the test and do well (online,63 min:50 questions, no webcam). Test are manageable not that hard but heart/circulation/resp. unit test was def intense and v conceptual. Be prepared to understand chemistry (little more beyond chem120). Put in time to process info and it'll pay off
Dr. Brown is awesome! He moves through lectures fast and it is VERY content heavy but he does a solid job and explaining material and providing scenarios for concepts. Don't be afraid to ask questions, review before lectures, be on time and be respectful and you'll ace the class.
He's big on being fair and being a professional (be on time and participate). But he loves the subject and loves the interaction with students in class. Such a fun class. We even get to choose the topics we want near end of the semester. Best class ever. He wants you to succeed but gets a bit irritated when you are lazy or a distraction to others.
online class in the spring 24. VERY organized and helpful. He gives lots of resources to help. The content is hard but he takes you step by step thru it. So glad I took his class vs others. Some online instructors don't know what they are doing and aren't organized. I loved this class and it prepared me for my medical career better than others
Dr. Brown is organized-all content is in his lecture notes. He does use pop quizzes as a way to check participation, but drops lowest quiz/exam. After each unit he posts audio versions from previous years. He sets up material to appeal to different learning types-audio/visual, etc. I respect him as a prof. a lot. Office hrs=gr8 Very knowledgeable.
10/10 Class. No Notes. Def take it.
Recommend taking his classes. Really enjoyed the lectures and he has everything available to help you succeed. Will give out pop quizzes to see if you are paying attention, but if you show up to class and review alittle before, the quizzes are easy. Really great professor.
Such a great class. I thought neuro would be intimidating but he made it fun to learn. Yes, there were some tough chapters but it was all put together with other easier stuff that make it fun.
What a great course. I was worried that I'd miss some pop quizzes but he drops the one lowest. Plus, I really didn't want to skip class since it was a good class. I learned a lot more than I thought I'd learn. We get to apply what we learned in cell bio (140) a bit and learned how the brain actually works with review of some diseases too.
Overall a great class. I'm going to take his physiology class next semester (270) just because I want him as instructor instead of the others.
I used to avoid online classes but he is really organized and clear on the lectures. all quizzes/ exams online and you can use your notes. they are timed exams so you can't look every answer up but I studied well and was ready for exams for the most part. He gave wide window to take each exam which fits my work schedule too. Best option for bio270
Amazing professor and class! I was nervous taking this class because neuroscience sounds scary but I really loved it. He gives you his notes, but this class is by no means easy. There are pop quizzes and four exams and you HAVE to study. He also does NOT tolerate people being late, so if you tend to show up to class late - don't waste your time.
THIS IS A HARD CLASS. STUDY!! I have never learned more in a single class, and he goes through a lot of information in just one class period. Those pop quizzes and exams are all you are graded off of and they can be really tricky. This was such an interesting class but do not think it is going to be easy. Do not show up late, he will get mad.
Very lecture heavy class, but if you show up and take notes in class its not hard. He does a good job about laying everything out in a logical order. He's strict on attendance and timeliness, if you struggle with this, don't take this class. Not really a guy I'd be close with, but that's not what I need in a professor.
Honestly, this class was really easy, mostly because it was online and asynchronous. As long as you stayed on top of the assignments, it was super manageable. I didn't need to reach out to the professor much, but everything was laid out clearly, and the workload wasn't bad at all. Great option if you need a lighter class in your schedule!
I was scared at first since Neuro is not my thing but this wasn't as bad as I thought. It was straightforward. All the notes and slides were available and were really organized. Yeah I had to study but it was manageable. pop quizzes every now and then just to keep you engaged and coming to class. but they were not hard on the weeks I studied .
online asychronous class. It was really organized. He gave schedule to help you stay on track and low points quizzes too. All online open notes! Learned a lot. It was a lot of material but went through it well. Highly recommend!!!
very organized and give you all his notes. Some pop quizzes but drops the low one. be on time to class and at least review notes before class and you can alright. Optional final . I thought neuro would be impossible but it was managable. I learned a lot.
took at bio elective. Just a lecture class, no lab.
If you struggle with in-person classes and wanted to take his online course- I HIGHLY recommend! His powerpoints were very helpful and he gave great tools to retain the material. This is not an easy class so really study and you will do fine! You can use notes for tests but make sure they're organized because you wont have time to search!
he's so great. i took him for phys lab and he would lecture a little beforehand to make sure we knew the information before we got started on the lab. he was extremely engaging and made this class so much better. there are two exams, the final isn't cumulative and the practice exams he gives out are very similar.
lecture only class, no labs so it is nice for elective or bio major credit. really organized. 4 exams and optional cumulative final - takes best 4 exams. some quizzes but if you study a few times a week its not bad at all. Drops one low quiz. just use the notes he gives. fun ending to class when we get to choose what we review.
I enjoyed this class. The most interesting class I have taken so far at JMU. Lectures were online but he was enthusiastic. It allowed me to retain info really well. I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed studying.
One of the best professor in the bio department. Beware of pop quizzes tho
I had him for Lab, and it honestly was pretty easy; he sometimes nitpicks grades for the Post Labs (4.75/5), but overall, it was a super easy class as long as you complete the group work and pay attention.
I had Dr. Brown for lab and he was great. He made the concepts very easy to learn/understand..
I was worried this class was gonna be too hard but he made it reasonable. I'd gotten an A if I wasn't taking o chem at same time. some pop quizzes but drops the lowest one. we got to choose what topic we wanted to go over at end. That was nice
what a great class. I was surprised how much I liked it. pop quizzes now and then but you get to drop lowest. really enjoyed this class more than any other bio class I took so far.
Very nice lab teacher compared to all the other ones. Very nice person and will help if you need it. Lab reports are credit heavy so make sure the answers are in depth and you'll get a good grade. You can use google on the tests that are in person.
This class is pretty easy as long as you work with your groupmates. 2 tests, Mid-term + Final, both are open note. This class is not hard as long as you put the work into it when doing assignments!
