3 exams worth a total of 45% of your grade (you get cheat sheets), one project that pretty much everybody got a 100 on, suggested homework but only collected three problems the whole semester - if you go to class and answer his questions once in a while it's an easy A - one of my favorite accounting classes
This class is an easy A if you are willing to put in some work. Definitely suggest looking over the learnsmart before the tests. He gives a four page cheat sheet for the tests so it's pretty much open notes. His questions are still kind of difficult so make sure you are prepared. Other than that he's an amazing lecturer if you show up.
His class was one of the more boring classes I've been in. It was basically him reading vocab words off of powerpoints for an hour. He does allow four cheat sheets though, so if you put in effort it is an easy A. I think Prof Byars is probably a pretty cool guy, but this class is such a drag that he doesn't really have a chance to be fun.
His tests don't always match the material we learned in class. This class can be very boring and he'll go off on tangents about something completely different from what we were talking about. Overall, he is a good professor though.
Extremely unpredictable with grading and unwilling to answer questions offered by multiple students, asserting the topic has been clearly addressed even though the mass inquiry would suggest otherwise. Doesn't write his own exams so the lectures don't fit with the tested material. Would not recommend.
Nice guy, heavy lectures. Material is super boring to no fault of his own, so lectures will always be boring but he spices them up a bit to make them funny. Test heavy, 3 tests and online quizzes. Weighs your best test the most though which is nice. Tests are pretty hard but he just uses questions from the book. Class requires a lot of studying tho
Byars is a one of a kind professor, he is super knowledgeable and caring for his students. He is very relatable and easy to talk to. He grades in the students favor, but with that being said dont expect everything to be curved. Attendance isnt mandatory, but its not a boring class and he explains the material well. Overall a great professor.
Byars is a great guy. Took him for both 403 and 504. Best part about his class is that your best test grade is worth 25% and worst is worth 15%. The middle one is worth 20%. He doesn't take attendance. If the average sucks on his exams he blames himself and tries to work with the class. Gives a curve on the exams if no one in the class makes a 100.
Great Professor overall. It is a fully lecture based class; powerpoint on projector with him talking for the full 50 minutes but he makes the lectures very interesting/amusing with lively examples of the topics we are learning. More of a story-telling than a lecture. The class in general just has a lot of content so detailed notes are a must.
Attendance not mandatory, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I went. Class is pretty much decided by like 6 homeworks, 3 exams (and by 3 I mean 3 total). Final is not cumulative its just a 3rd exam. He gives exam question breakdowns on review days. Great teacher for 324. Take him.
Professor Byars is fantastic! Read the textbook and you will do well. Exams and quizzes are straight forward.
Justin is a really nice guy, he wants everyone to get an A in his class and will do anything he can to help you. The course content is dry but he really makes an effort to connect the concepts to everyday scenarios that a college student may encounter. I would definitely take him again.
This class has a ton of material. Byars is really knowledgeable and a great guy. He apparently came off as a jerk to some but I loved him. Did terrible on all the tests except the last one and barely managed to get an A. Tests make up most of the grade along with HW. He had us sit in assigned seats in a 400 perp class which was weird but i get it
his personality sucks, you email him questions and we comes back with snarky responses. whats nice is attendance is extra credit. lectures are BORING and don't even matter, just study the textbook. what sucks is tests are 10 chapters worth of material
Took him for business law. Super great teacher! Tests are hardcore but he prepares you for them. The smart books are easy a's and you can access the book for quizzes. Did a great job switching to online. Attendance only mandatory when in person. He truly worked with students to make the best of the situation during covid though.
Not a very understanding professor at all. To study for the tests, don't even bother looking at your notes. Use the test outline and study straight from the book. Weights best test most and worst test only 10% which is nice. Smarbooks for every chapter that are easy points. READ THE BOOK!
No attendance. There is homework due on 3 set dates for the tests and it takes like 6 hours to do but it helps you learn the info before the test.
Professor Byars is by far my favorite business school teacher. His lectures are fun to listen to and he explains business law in a way that's easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory, but you get extra credit if you show up. Also stay on track with Smartbooks and Quizzes, that's what made me get an A
Byars' lectures are actually interesting. Do the SmartBooks and read the textbook and you'll do fine. He grades based on a point system, so basically as long as you reach a certain number of points you're guaranteed that grade.
Do not take his class. His past reviews are so different than who he actually is. There is no extra credit, for exams there is no study guide or anything, and you also do not get a sheet for the exam. He was also incredibly arrogant and hes honestly a jerk. Dont even bother emailing him bc he'll just respond with a snarky response and not help.
I don't like him at all as a person. He's very arrogant and judgmental. If you're curious about law, don't take him, he only wants to explain what's in the powerpoint: nothing more, nothing less. Not the worst prof, but his personality is irritating. I've stopped watching his lectures because they're not that helpful. STAY ON TOP OF THE SMARTBOOKS!
Anyone in 2020 that gives him a bad review is because they did not do the work or were too lazy to learn the material. 3 exams, 15 quizzes, 25 smartbooks. Overall the class was not that hard if the time is put in. Notes on the textbook and filling in small details in the lectures is the best way to go about this course. Good professor. Do the work.
Reading the chapters and taking notes is how you will do well on the homework (smartbooks) which is how you will do on the quizzes, which is how you will do well on the tests. the tests are straightforward. a lot of material but really not bad, just put in the work and space it out since you'll have like 10 chapters due every 4 weeks or so
Byars has been one of my favorite professors in Darla. All of the homework he assigns will help you do well on the exams. Some people thought he came off as rude but I did not think so at all. Watch the lectures, read the textbook, do the smart books and quizzes, and you should be fine.
Honestly Byars is pretty rude and not very helpful. Failed the first exam. After that I stopped watching his lectures, and studied by just reading the chapters in depth/taking good notes on my own. Ended up doing okay in the class. Got an A on the final and literally taught myself everything. You can take him but I wouldn't rely on his lectures
Prof Byars is a great guy. He tells stories and gives great examples when teaching a concept. His lectures are interesting, will go over tests with you,and he gives spot on exam reviews. There is a lot of content in this class, but he makes it more manageable. He helped me out when I was on the cusp of a grade when I was not at all expecting it.
Byars is super chill. The lectures will either be super helpful or super confusing. I personally liked just reading the textbook more. Smartbook assignments and quizzes due a few days before exams. Three exams per semester worth 25 % each. Not a super hard class, but you definitely need to put some sort of effort in. Definitely take Byars.
Byars was a super cool guy and nice as could be. I enjoyed talking to him about golfing and about funny stuff. He is super easy to get along with. His teaching was not easy for me. He just lectured off of powerpoints every class and then the tests had super specific questions. If you like learning yourself through reading the book then take him.
Prof Byars is a nice guy but his teaching style is not great. He is not very engaging and exams are very difficult. No matter how much you pay attention in class or read the textbook and do the smartbooks for practice, exams are still very challenging. Has true/false questions on exams, which are difficult and designed to trick you. Not a fun class
He's nice but his lectures are boring and not very helpful for the exams. I suggest only reading the textbook and taking notes from the smartbooks. Those notes helped me way more for the exams. I didn't listen to a single lecture. True/false questions take up half the exam and are tricky if you don't reader super careful
If you want a professor who takes a 20 minute lesson and extents it to 75 minute classes because "class is not over" then take Byars. If you want to read the textbook to do good on the exams, then take Byars. If you want to walk out of class regretting wasting an hour of your day, take Byars. As a person +A, as a professor, -F.
The smartbooks are too much work for what he uses from them. 1-2 hours for one and he uses like 1/4 of whats on it. Exams are unclear even if you put in the work, I would follow EXACTLY what he says and barely pass exams. You can't ask questions or email him because he is rude, calls students out, and expects you to just get it. Take some else!!
Professor Byars is really nice, but not very good at explaining the material or giving interesting lectures. Exams are hard, oddly specific, & not consistent with the material covered in class. Does not give good or timely feedback. Not the worst class I've taken by far, but it wasn't great either. Individual projects and quizzes saved my grade.
Byars get a lot of bad rep because he teaches information and expects you to know it to the point of application. Is that not what we go to college for. If you want an easy A, go somewhere else, Byars is legit. If you go to class and review the exam review where he tells you EVERY TOPIC that will be on the exam you will get an A no doubt about it.
Byars has bad reviews but I didn't think he was that bad. Lectures are boring, but I didn't need them to pass. I just memorized the powerpoint slides and got A's on the test. Just study a few days before the test. There's a lot of Smartbook assignments so start them early because they take hours. Overall besides the large workload class wasn't bad.
I really enjoyed taking Byars. No, his in class material is not everything that is on the test, but thats the point. You have to READ the book and apply the material lectured in class, that is how you will do great in this class. The day before a test he provides point allocations and specific concepts that will be on the test, so GO TO CLASS!
The class is so boring. But that is not Byars fault, just wasnt great online.
His lectures are super boring, and hes kind of rude when you email him. He is pretty arrogant and cocky. You have to read the book or you will not do good in his class. The smart books on connect take forever to do and theyre mandatory.
Professor Byars is very laid back and definitely knows his stuff. Your grade is based only on exams and smartbooks, so if you don't do the homework you can't pass. His lectures make the legal jargon of the class a little more relatable. I really enjoyed this class and I think a big part of that was having taking Byars.
Very personable, he wants to be your friend and likes to have conversations. Keeps classes short, usually finishes early. You don't need to go, although it is recommended. The class itself isn't all that hard, but you need to study before exams. Grade is made of only smartbooks and exams, so don't mess up.
One of the best professors Ive had at USC. He is very engaging and wants the class to really understand the material as well as enjoy his class. He really tries to get to know his students and is willing to do whatever he can to help them in the course. Will definitely miss taking his class next semester.
Honestly a fairly easy class. Keep up with the smartbooks as you go through them in lecture, do what he says and pay attention in class, you will get an A. This class is fairly broad and shallow so it isn't too hard as long as you put a little effort into it. He was nothing special but a solid choice.
His lectures are long and boring and he does not post any helpful material online so you either have to go to class or read the text. He will give you a 2-day period of him telling what is on the exams to review, but he does not realize that 2 days is not enough to sort through weeks of material. The textbook is definitely more helpful than he is.
The class is boring along with his lectures. He is rude and arrogant when you email with simple questions. It is possible to do good on the exams if you go to the review and take the time to study what he says will be on the test. I wouldn't recommend him but if he is your only option it is not the worst thing ever.
I am not sure why Professor Byars has such a low score on here. He is a very straightforward guy that gives you everything you need to succeed. I had him at 8am on Mondays and Wednesdays so he gave extra credit just for showing up. The class before the exam he gives you literally every topic of every question and you can disregard half of the unit.
I loved this class. Byars is straight forward about due dates and what is on the exams all while providing extra credit opportunities. His exams can seem overwhelming, but he puts a study guide for each exam on black board that has everything you need to know for each exam. Before the exam we have a review day where he narrows down the topics.
Do not take his class. He is unforgiving and is exhausting to listen to. To give you an idea of who he is, he would pause class to call you out for not wearing a mask up until the school dropped the mask mandate. Not a fitting teacher for the position.
There are definitely professors that are an easier way out for taking this course, however I find these reviews to be a little bit harsh. If you attend every class then taking the exams will be a breeze, literally. I attended maybe 5 classes all semester long and earned a B+ in the course. Really not a bad option if the easiest teacher is booked.
If you think this is going to be an easy A, youre in for a surprise. It takes a lot of studying and time to complete assignments. Lectures are long and Byars doesnt try to engage at all with students. Your grade DEPENDS on the exams, notes are pages long with info you dont need, only narrows it down for you 2 days before the exam. Take with caution
This class would have been fine if it actually had a reputable teacher. Byars is not approachable at all, calls out students for no reason, and always had a condescending attitude to him during lectures. He didn't seem interested in helping students at all, just wanted to boast about his law "knowledge." Take a different prof if you can
Absolute drama queen who neglects to give tests in person and then sends inflammatory emails a day before final blackmailing 300+ students to own up to cheating on the final. 70% of tests are easy and other 30% of questions are bs GOTCHA nonsense. Didn't have any issues until he went on a power trip last week of class and refused to just be direct
guy has a huge ego, belittles students. Doesnt confront those he thinks cheated but puts the threat of punishment on the entire class until someone fesses up. You could have been completely honest with your work and still be at risk. If Byars reads his ratings one day: stick to the golf course, hopefully youre better at golf than being a professor
All tests are open book and notes but only gives you like 45 mins for 50 questions. Have to do connect questions but they are not hard, just long. He's an ok teacher, I learn the material through connect mostly. He is definitely intimidating but likes to try and make the class laugh. I'm not sure what the other teachers are like, but he is not bad.
Byars is a great teacher. He relates lots of the material we learn in class to real life situations. He does NOT take attendance and he posts all the lecture notes online. Tests are open note and all online. You use Connect to do workbooks and quizzes for homework. He does not offer any extra credit. He's super funny and I enjoy his lectures.
Lectures are absolutely useless, everything was learned online through smartbooks that had way too many questions. Homework and online quizzes are due all at once right before every test and both of them are basically just busy work. Pros are that attendance is far from mandatory and the tests are incredibly easy and straightforward. Cool guy tho
For what the class is JB is great. Super cool guy and I felt like the lectures were really helpful, as he gives unique and thought out examples that really help. the smartbooks suck bc they take a while, so don't wait until the last day. He has an exam review before every exam and if you use the review and go to that class you will do well on it.
The Smartbooks and Quizs are a ton of work just don't procrastinate. But Byars is a great teacher and lecturer. If you pay attention in class and do all the smart books you can get at least a B on every test. Attendance is not mandatory and if you work ahead the course is very easy. Would take again.
I kept hearing the professor Byars can be condescending or crude, but people who say that just don't really get him. He is a funny guy who really knows his stuff. Had to do smartbooks and quizzes for pretty much every chapter. If you do the smartbooks and make good notes for the exams you will make an A in the class.
Professor Byars is funny and makes his lectures interesting. As long as you do the smart books and quizzes which are easy 100's you should be fine to make a B in the class with some effort. You WILL work for an A though and he makes that very clear on day one.
Prof Byars was a great professor. His tests are fairly difficult time wise but they are all online open note. Attendance isnt mandatory. He doesnt drop grades or offer extra credit. It was easy for an acct class
JB is very knowledgable however the lectures will do nothing for you when it comes to the tests. He goes off topic with random stories and tbh I think he's so creepy. Otherwise LOTS of smart books that take forever, but he def wants everyone to do well and understand the content so grading is more forgiving for sure.
Did not think I was going to like Byars or the class going in. However, Byars made it my favorite class this semester, and I personally enjoyed it when he went off-topic. He doesn't take attendance, but I advise you to go as he will show some exam questions. Write down what he says it will help a ton on test day.
this class isn't hard if you read the textbook and review quizzes before exams. attendance isn't mandatory but I would go because he tells you specific topics on the exam and his explanations help apply concepts in real life. has an obsession with gisele bundchen and tries really hard to appeal to 21 year old frat guys. hairline needs help.
tries to be funny but mostly fails, hairline and part change daily. first exam was unnecessarily difficult but it is very possible to get an A+ if you do the homework and read a bit of the textbook, lectures help but not required. the class before the exam he goes over the topics covered on the exam and the amount of questions per topic.
I have no idea why Byars gets good reviews. There is a quiz due at the end of every class, which is so much harder than what he talks about in class. Attendance is mandatory bc going to class will literally not help you at all. You have to literally memorize the textbook to do well. You are only graded on quizzes and exams. GOOD LUCK.
Byars is a really good teacher, he wants his students to understand and be able to use the knowledge not just memorize it. He adds little stories to every subject which makes it relatable, easier to understand and memorable. Nice to know: small quizzes due after every class, need to buy the book to complete quizzes and attendance helps with exams
class is easy (just a lot of work) never attended and about to get an A. he's awful, god forbid something happens to you outside of school this guy wont care. he literally stands there and reads the slides a toddler could do his job and his music is mid. take someone else or just don't show up to class but he might start crying about it.
Class is awful. Expects you to memorize 10 chapters with 7 sections each for a 40 minute exam with 50 questions. Literally impossible. If he really wants us to do well, this class should be smaller more frequent exams because memorizing 10 chapters is ridiculous.
Would not waste time going to class, notes are not on all the topics you will need to know. Exams cover 10-11 units of material and it is basically all "free game". Exams have 50 questions to do in 40 minutes and it's your entire grade. Dont bother doing HWs He would be a cool guy to get a beer with but not a good teacher.
Ignore previous reviews he changed entire syllabus, 90% grade weighed off 3 in person exams, each exam covers 10-12 chapters, easily the hardest class I've taken here in 4 years.
Theres kids complaining, but they likely dont go to class/read chapters and then fail the exam. I've gotten an A on both of the exams just by reading the chapters, taking notes in class, and studying quizlet for a week. Yes it takes time but its not too hard. The exams are your whole grade, which is the worst part. JB thinks hes Matthew McConaughey
As everyone has said, this class is test-heavy. There are 10+ chapters in each exam and he doesn't give much guidance on what to study for, just that everything is "free-game". Byars is knowledgeable about the course but expects too much from his students. 90% of the grade comes from 2 tests and the final. Course would be better with restructuring
He literally told a joke and made the class laugh as I was writing this - ignore any bad reviews! Byars is as decent of a professor for this class as you could have. Thorough explanations for note taking and answers all questions, dedicates an entire class period to exam prep, funny, and as engaging as anyone could be for the content. Take him.
3 exams, on paper, 50 questions, 45 minutes to take it, closed notes. Exams were 10-11 chapters each. An insane amount of information, it was like trying to drink a glass of water from a fire hose. It's doable but intense. Going to class helps but you'll still have to read the textbook because he doesn't go into depth on it all. Super pretentious.
JB is a character for sure (for one we call him JB). I dont like commercial law and JB does not get me interested in it. He likes to ramble so I cant pay attention to him for long. Quizzes pretty much every day after class open from 12pm-12am. Need to read the textbook before doing these since JB doesnt cover it all. Tests are fine if you study
JB is a great professor; this class is just boring. It's not necessarily difficult, but it is a TON of information. While not an interesting class, JB did make it digestible. He's personable and knows what he's talking about. You WILL need to read the book to do well, as lectures cover test content but not all quiz content.
3 exams and quizzes for HW. Class is very boring but manageable, honestly, it is my worst "ACCT" class out of the 3 students needed. Lecture and content heavy, attendance isn't needed but if you don't go you will most likely fall behind in the class. Rather take him tho than online but still boring.
Justin is a great teacher who genuinely wants to see everyone get a good grade in this class. The grade breakdown can be scary with 90% of your grade being the 3 exams throughout the semester, but if you study the smartbooks and pay attention in class the tests are very easy. If you are someone who is good at taking tests, take this class with JB.
Justin Byars overall is a great professor. There are 3 major tests that determine your final grade, but if you listen to his lectures, take notes, and do the smartbooks you will succeed. The exam will be timed, so you have to know the information. He is also understanding and sometimes can be funny.
easy class and class averages on exams were around 80% so everybody was doing pretty good. I just went through all the smartbooks the day before the exam and read my notes from class and got A's on everything. Attending lecture isn't mandatory but useful so you can get good points on the quizzes after class. High weight on exams, manageable tho
I usually do not say this about professors, but all the bad reviews are laughable. Justin Byars is a fair professor in my opinion. If you ask a question, he will answer it and he gives very thorough lectures. It is A LOT of information to study, but if you don't wait till the night before the exam you should be fine. Have time management.
I love JB. He's every college student's ideal professor: minimal HW, non-mandatory attendance, etc. I would suggest going to lectures bc some of the stuff he says in class is on the exams and is harder to figure out from just reading the textbook. His lectures are great and helpful. He also rly cares about students if you go talk to him.
Business law is a loaded course, but JB uses plenty of examples to relate big concepts to a normal person's everyday life. There's homework every day or two, but each question is usually straight from the textbook's wording and easy to search. Just focus on lecture material instead of textbook material for exams, and you'll do have a good time.
I didn't really like him at first, but honestly he became one of my favorite professors. I recommend using the notes he provides and making quizlets or flash cards out of them, that's how I got an A on all the exams. Put in the time studying everyday and the tests will seem easy. 2 or 3 quizzes every week that are open note. Pretty funny guy.
Your grade relies almost entirely on tests. He no longer counts smart books for a grade and I found it hard to comprehend all of the content based on lectures alone so reading the book is the best piece of advice I can give. He seems like a nice guy but not very good at teaching.
JB is a good guy and professor, I just think it wasn't a good fit for my personal learning style. He's passionate about class and his lectures are very engaging and easy to listen to; however, it's graded on VERY few things. Quiz after class every day open at noon and due at midnight, those add up to 10%. There's then 3 hard exams worth 30% each.
Average professor, great person but teaching style just may not be for some students. Course is graded off very few things and is lecture and test heavy
3 exams throughout the semester and a final (not cumulative). Byars typically curves exams. This course has a lot of material but he explains concepts very well. Lectures can get boring but worth going, he gives example scenarios for the different concepts that help on exams. Very willing to help students outside of class.
Professor Byars is passionate about the subjects he teaches, so I found his lectures to be interesting. If you go to class, take notes, and do the smartbooks/quizzes, the tests will be a breeze. I don't agree with any of the negative reviews because he's a great guy in and out of class who makes clear the strategies to be successful.
don't listen to the bad reviews. He's a good professor. Smart books and quizzes are due after every class, but there easy. Tests aren't extremely hard, easy class to do good in if you study.
Seems nice, not so much when you talk to him 1 on 1
To be honest, the class isn't terrible, but the lectures have never felt very valuable. He rambles and tries to be so cool in front of the class so the lectures are a slow continuous cycle of thinking "wow just get to the point". Just memorize the week leading up to it and you'll be fine, the material itself isn't that hard to learn that way.
JB is knowledgable about the subject, but unfortunately his ego, tendency to ramble, and need for validation from the fraternity boys make his class painful to sit through. He tells you to "study what he told you" but you would be better off to do the smartbooks and read the textbook because there are questions on material you won't know from him.
Tests do not match homework nor powerpoints. Boring lectures, not interactive, rambles about college football.
I'm going to be honest the exams do not match homework or really the textbook. He talks about college football all the time, like for more than half of the lecture. Why am I paying my money for a CPA licenses accounting guy to talk about Football for most of the time in a law class?
Pretty nice guy. Can get by without going to lectures but extra credit if you go every now and then. Exams are tough but reading the textbook and taking notes are way to go. Smart books and HW quizzes don't align well with exams. Class is mostly memorization.
Great and funny professor. Actually has a personality. The material is very easy and he prepares you well for the exams by giving you a detailed breakdown of the tests. Attendance is optional, but he does offer extra credit sometimes when attendance is low and he curves exams. Very chill and is open to explaining topics further.
I would ignore the bad views and take him. Sometimes he rambles but those can be funny. As for tests the content is hard but he sends out a test guide and you can fill it in from your notes or the textbook. He also gives opportunities for easy extra credit. Another bonus is he doesn't take attendance so you won't be "absent" if you miss a day
Byars is one of the worst professors I've had. He is condescending and rude when you talk to him and he also randomly in the middle of the year started to take attendance. His lectures are boring and a waste of time you are better off reading the textbooks out of class.
Exam 1 was the hardest and the average for all the tests is usually a 70%, if it is lower he will curve it to 70%. Lectures can be boring and material is hard. Study the study guide he gives you and go to review days. Only tests on material in the notes.
ACT 324 has a lot of content. Prof Byars isn't terrible, his lectures are VERY important I recommend taking notes on what he says and write down the examples he uses in class. Just go to class, take notes and you'll be fine. He gave out over 30 points of extra credit over the semester 20 for just showing up on days when there wasn't a lot of people
Attendance isn't mandatory, and I honestly didn't get that much out of the lectures so I stopped going. What I would recommend is reviewing the exam review sheet, and going to each chapter and taking notes on every point that will be on the exam. It is a TON of material so make sure you account for that when studying.
Genuinely a good, reasonable professor. Exams were always easy + clear. He chose the easiest homework questions for the exam. ~45 points extra credit, I hardly went to lecture and easily got an A. Also the class ended like 1.5 weeks before its supposed to! He made accounting easy but I still learned so much. Lots of room to make up for a low grade
To be honest I stopped going to class and just took notes from the textbook, but I'd recommend going if you aren't good at heavy reading. Attendance isn't mandatory but there's extra credit sometimes. The class seems difficult but truly if you just memorize the definitions/examples from the lectures that are on the exam guide you'll do fine.
Pretty easy class but can be boring when lecturing. You end up teaching yourself the material. He just goes over the notes in class. Attendance isn't mandatory but gives out extra credit sometimes if you go. He is very nice when it comes to technology issues. Lots of time to complete assignments but can add up quickly so stay on top of it.
People struggled in beginning because of not knowing what to study. The exams were based on the notes from the lectures, not the textbook. There are smart books/quizzes, however, they are not the most useful when studying; study the notes. Go to class because he often offers extra credit when people don't show up and review days were very helpful.
Chill and funny prof. Lectures can be boring. Gives out extra credit if you show up to lecture so go (it's optional). Exam heavy but he tells you what is exactly on the test. Ignore the negative reviews the class is pretty easy.
It's easy to get an A in this class if you pay attention and study. Exams, homework, and quizzes are not too hard. Attendance is optional, but I highly recommend going to class because he gives extra credit sometimes to the people who go to class. The grading criteria is based on points, and class content is not complicated. I recommend taking JB!
There are four exams but none of them are that bad and he tells you exactly what will and won't be on them. Lectures are a little boring but he gives out a good chunk of extra credit. Smart books a quizzes are super easy too. Just study a little bit before the exams and you should do well.
He is a very entertaining professor, but the contents of the class just isn't for me. Easy to pass if you show up to class and work through the smartbooks.
Really liked him. Gave extra credit for just going to class. Wants his students to do well. All exams are online.
This class is pretty manageable if you do the assignments he gives. Will take a while to receive scores and dont expect replies to any questions you may send him.
Listen- I would be concerned if you couldn't pass this class. He gives out study guides of the exact topics that are going to be on the exam. Then, the class before the exam, goes over it in extreme detail. DO NOT STUDY ANY MATERIAL BESIDES HIS NOTES. I didn't do great on the first exam but after that it was a breeze. He's funny too.
Using his test exam review guides gives you a good idea of what will be on the exam. Randomly, in lectures, he provides extra credit, so make sure you go to class. The smartbooks are kind of useless since he only uses the info from his PowerPoint on the exam. Lock in on the last two exams and you should be fine.
Gave us extra credit for showing up to friday classes. First exam was rough but gets way easier after
Professor Byars' class can be polarizing, but the material is manageable if you stay on top of it. While his lectures can drag, the concepts are explained well. Using unstuck study and the textbook are key to success in this course.
He is condescending and does not explain things clearly. He puts numbers on the board and if you ask where he got them from he looks at you like you are stupid. Very frustrating. Rude in emails too,
I do not recommend taking this class. The content is easy to understand, but the exams do not match the material. You think you understand the material and content until you receive your exam grade. Lectures are dry and he teaches nonchalantly. There are definitely better classes to take over his.
Terrible. Yaps all class. Complains about how he is getting fired at the end of the semester, no extra credit whatsoever, and exams are terrible. Assigns smart books but they may as well be useless because they have no correlation to his lectures.
Lots of smartbooks, and 3 exams and a final. It is an attainable A, and he is engaging in class. Extra credit available if you go to class towards the end of the semester.
You could take this class online with another professor and be fine, I would only recommend if you actually cared about business law and want to learn it
He's alright. He just reads the slides and expands lightly, the homework is really all you need to do well on the exams, and you don't need to go to class.
Lectures are long, but he makes them interesting and applicable. The exams can be difficult; it is definitely a class you need to spend some time on.
i LOVE JB. he is actually so funny if you pay attention in class. pretty hard class because of the material but if you study you'll do great. responds to emails super fast and is available after class to answer questions. highly recommend but takes effort to get a good grade. if you don't actually want to do work and take notes choose someone else
Great guy made the class less intimidating.
Insuferable as a human being omg. He refers to himself in third person??? I was expecting this class to be a lot easier than it was. He is incredibly paranoid about cheating and will threaten taking attendance when class looks empty but never actually does it. Idk...just a strange guy in general. Class isn't too bad but he is odd
lectures not very helpful, smart books are helpful, would recommend taking notes on those. tests are long and hard bc there is a lot of content. make sure you're getting every point possible on hw and quizzes to leave cushion for tests. you can only miss 100/1000 points for an A. end of the semester he'd give out 5 extra points for coming to class
Attendance wasn't mandatory, but he provided good examples in class. Exams could be difficult at times with tricky questions, but he provides a study guide of the topics you should study. Needed a certain amount of points to get an A, and was strict about giving any type of extra points out.
good guy and his exams are pretty straightforward. Just study lecture slides/outlines and you'll be fine.
Professor Byars seems like a really good guy. Though this class can be boring at times, I feel that he gave his best effort at making it interesting. First and last exam (no cumulative final) were pretty decent where the second and third were harder. All exams were online lockdown and he gives a great outline before each exam. Would recommend.
He is awesome - tried to make class fun. When class attendance got low, he gave extra credit to the students who showed up. People who say he is strict on extra credit must not have shown up for class. His exams aren't easy but he provides an outline and allows a cheat sheet for the last 3 exams. His practice exams are great for preparing for exams
He is okay. He often would just stop in the middle of a lecture and talk about something random which got annoying. I mostly just took notes in class and basically taught myself the material. The exams are harder than the quizzes and homework so just understand the PowerPoints and you'll be fine. Starts taking attendance if people stop showing up.
Sorta funny teacher; like he'll say some jokes in class that are sometimes funny (boring) Homework is Smartbook Connect, so a lot! (≥ 50 questions per chapter) some graded homework assign. for each chapter. 3 exams (20 Ques for 50 min class) & 1 final all on Lockdown Browser. Do the work, study, practice, and you'll be fine. Memorize the formulas!
Attendance was not mandatory until people didn't want to show up to class. So professor made attendance extra credit, but like after 4 absences, your class grade will go down one letter! so just go to class and participate. Textbook is required because of Smartbook. (its about $150 I don't remember) (just expensive) Smartbook has all your homework.
He is just overall rude and belittles his students. He will make a spectacle in a 400 person lecture god forbid someone is a minute late. Rude in emails, neither easygoing nor forgiving. Just overall a bad teacher who shows no respect for his students. Tests were online, he made attendance mandatory for everyone to sleep through lectures.
Probably a normal professor for this class. Not the best but not bad either. Mostly all of the class comes from the McGrawHill online textbook that has imbedded quizzes and reading questions that are for grades. The lectures aren't the most useful and the exam's aren't the easiest, but he's a cool guy and if you do the work you'll pass.
He seems harsh at the beginning of the year but as the class goes on he lightens up and gives extra credit. Exams get easier as the class goes on. The topic is hard but he does well about trying to get his students to understand it.
He did a horrible job at explaining concepts. He puts a problem up on the board but doesn't explain where the numbers come from. He often talks about random stuff that has nothing to do with accounting. I ended up teaching myself most of the material. Only bright side is that he let you have a cheat sheet for the last three exams.
Not a terrible class. He starts taking attendence for extra credit halfway through the semester. Exams arent easy, study the slides not the smartbooks.
Overall, not a hard course. His exams are a bit tricky but not hard. Now, his lectures are a bit boring, and his attitude is not the best. I witnessed students come up to him after class and he would reject their questions in way to make them seem dumb. He is not an understanding person at all.
The class itself wasn't awful. The exams sometimes didn't align with what we did in class. The lectures are boring and the homework's are long. He comes of with an attitude and decided to make attendance mandatory halfway through the year. As long as you read the text books and study for the exams its an easy A.
Honestly I really liked him. The class really wasn't that bad, but was not easy. He made attendance extra credit halfway thru, which was really nice. Exams are lockdown and based 100% on the slides and as long as you study the slides and know what's going on, youre fine. Final is not cumulative. A ton of smartbooks tho. Would totally take him again
Very good, but a little strange. Gives plenty of EC. Long lectures. Is very paranoid about ChatGPT. Free "A".
Very rude, and makes you feel dumb for asking questions. The smartbooks are longgg and you need to do them. Overall not a hard class, he's just not a very good prof. Doesn't work with you AT ALL, even after I tried to submit my drs note. Very scared of cheaters and using AI, the work outside of class takes a while.
Byars is a funny guy and clearly cares about his students. Pretty much every class is just a lecture but he makes them bearable and sometimes even entertaining. Also some of the information is directly applicable to your real life as a student which is nice. Tests are pretty straightforward. No complaints
I quite enjoyed his classes. I had him for both ACCT 324 and ACCT 226, and I'm glad I had him twice. I found his lectures to be interesting and the material to be easy enough to understand when he explained it. He did not take attendance at first. He then offered extra credit for it when not enough students were showing up to class, which was nice,
This class was very straightforward. I found the lectures to be entertaining and easy to understand. The professor refers to himself as JB in class and is lowkey funny. The class is broken up into 4 units, with SmartBook homework covering each chapter and an exam due at the end of each unit. Overall, I would recommend.
Overall a chill guy, had him for 324 and 226. Generous with giving extra credit if you actually show up. Exams can be difficult, I recommend only focusing on his slides and not the Mcgraw stuff. Only complaint is assigned smart books can be long and annoying. Would recommend taking him
Good not great teacher, would recommend handwriting problem questions instead of just showing them on the slides. Handwriting definitely helps understand better for sure! Just showing them on slides can get confusing.
Prof. Byars is a very nice guy and is very willing to help out all of his students. I found it very difficult to follow the material through his lecture slides in class. Found out teaching myself the content was the only way I could learn it and be prepared for the exams. Nice guy, just not the best lectures.
Honestly, I enjoyed JB! He gives you loads of time to finish assignments, broken up into four parts throughout the semester, so there's really no excuse not to have them done by then! He also started to give us EC for showing up! That being said, he is paranoid about cheaters on exams, but it's understandable. Overall would take it again.
The beginning of the semester was rough - his tests had numerous mistakes and it felt like it was his first time teaching. The second half everything was fine. He randomly made attendance mandatory at 6am before a 9:40 class that day. Lectures are kinda unhelpful, but you can manage the material on your own. Not the best but definitely good enough.
Great professor, just be ready to read.
This class is easy, would recommend for easy A if your good at memorizing terms. He is kinda of rude to his students but gets done what needs to be done and is clear. Lectures are not great but the slides correlate exactly whats on the exam you really dont need to go to class. Offers a lot of extra credit. He did randomly make attendance mandatory.
He keeps class entertaining and is not that hard to follow. EVERYTHING you need to know for tests are on the slides only study those for tests. There is a-lot of homework on connect but i would never read and j answer the questions. Pretty doable class ended with an A and didn't really out much into it.
You'll need to study hard to get good grades - just study his PPT slides and follow his outline. Mostly graded by 4 online exams using lockdown browser. Started taking attendance in mid-October, and gave us 1 extra point for each lecture.
