Lab: Online quizzes beforehand. Write the lab in a notebook before lab and he checks it. Also checks notebook after lab for your notes. Plus the normal lab reports. Puts his pre-lab PowerPoints online after the lab. A decent amount of work, but I would recommend him.
This class on its own is difficult however Dr. fair makes it worse because he speaks on a higher level of understanding. This makes the material hard to retain and you end up teaching yourself a good portion of it. No extra credit, tests are more than half of your grade and there's no curve.
Do not take this guy. He will make you hate Chem 2 more than you most likely already do. I hated the way he ran lectures. He was so hard to follow and the exams were impossible. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Great teacher. Just study/work hard and you'll be fine. Always helpful and interested in topic.
Dr. Fair is a great professor. IUP students tend to slack off and there is a reputation for it. He just tries to make students understand that they have to work for their grades. The exams are hard, yes, but he lays out all the material for you prior. If you don't understand something, ask him prior to the test and you'll get a good grade.
As his name implies he is Just and Fair, go to the sessions he sets up-he helps people who make an effort so put in the time and he will make sure you do alright
Very helpful teacher and he cares about his students but the subject tends to be very hard and there is a lot of notes for each chapter. go to his study sessions and show him you are putting effort into the class and you should be fine.
A great teacher who makes chem 102 interesting & managable. You have to study hard and do homework, which is very helpful when it comes to studying for the test. The HW provides feedback for each problem telling why your rite or wrong. I would reccomend going to class because it will make your life much easier. Hes a great prof & is always helpful!
Dr. Fair is extremely helpful. I barely passed this class but the only reason I did was because of all the extra help I received from him.Class isn't mandatory but i advise you to go because you won't survive if you don't. He gives extera credit points and gives help sessions for exams and basically gives you the answers to the test.
Chem is tough. Dr. Fair will help you as much as you need. Has review sessions prior to tests. HW is online and helps boost your grade. Go to class, read the book, and stay committed you will do just fine.
Dr. Fair is a fantastic Professor. As long as you are committed he will not give up until you know what is going on. He always makes time for students, and is just a genuine sweetheart. Love Dr. Fair, he is awesome!
Had Dr. Fair for Organic Chem I lab. The material was hard but he definitely made it much more understandable. He is easy to talk to during office hours and very helpful. One word of warning however, his lab final will pretty much make you cry.
Listen, Dr. Fair is a great guy, he is an amazing prof and give you alot of resources to be successful in his class. However, if you want a social life, friends, or play a sport this is not the class for you. His class requires hours of studying and doing extra work to just get by.good luck!
This class will take over your life. Exams are worth 50% of your grade,Quizzes 8%Homework 17%,and Lab 25%. Absolutely everything is on moodle, pre-labs,quizzes,and homework. The homework is usually between 50-60 problems, and you have to use a computer program to draw the structures. This classs sucks. However, Dr.Fair is very nice and trys to help.
Dr. Fair ROCKS he makes lab fun and is a great person. This definately was a great lab experiance except for some of the work. his midterm was horrid you have to make sure to STUDY all of the labs and especially the one right before. I would definately take him again! oh and he smells good:) so thats a plus!
Dr. Fair is extremely helpful and tries to create as many opportunities to enable students to understand the material. This class is a lot of work and it will take a lot of time to do the homework. I spent 5 hours with almost every assignment due. I suggest SI with this class also. Chem 102 is naturally tough but Dr. Fair is a good teacher.
BEST CHEM PROFESSOR! My 102 class had very difficult course material but man! Dr. Fair was a cool guy that absolutely did everything he could to help his students! You will not find a better chemistry teacher who knows what they are doing and cares more about their students
Dr. Fair is an excellent teacher but chem 102 is extremely hard. I suggest sitting in the front rows and go to tutoring AND the S.I sessions. Also, see him during office hours because he is very helpful. He gives many opportunites to raise your grade so take advantage of it. Also, I suggest going to every class cause if you miss one you're lost
Chem 102 is a really difficult course, but taking Dr. Fair will be your best bet. I learned so much in that class! His exams are really difficult, but the Moodle homework and quizzes he posts really helped me understand the material better. He's always cracking jokes during class which makes the class more interesting:)
Dr. Fair was a very helpful and clear professor both in lecture and lab. He explained things thoroughly and even cracked a chem joke every now and then, and I would take him in another course. (I stress ANOTHER course, since O-chem itself was the worst college experience of my career and I ended up withdrawing to save my GPA and my sanity).
Dr. Fair; super smart guy, very very helpful in his office hours if chem is difficult take advantage of this. It was for me so I went as often as possible. Very smart guy, very passionate about the subject he makes it as enjoyable as possible. Looking to do well and take something away from chem. take him. Much better than my freshman chem prof.
I have had each Fair and LeBlond for O Chem. Fair is a nice, energetic guy, but his tests/grading are not fair, and it kills your grade. O Chem is not a hard subject- just time consuming. Even though I put in the time & understood the material, I (and everyone else) failed Dr. Fair's tests. Differently, LeBlond is a fair test writer- take LeBLond.
Organic Chemistry is no joke, and Dr. Fair posts lengthy homework assignments and VERY difficult quizzes on Moodle. It is a time-consuming, difficult class with tons of work, but Dr. Fair provides great feedback. He will go out of his way to help any student ho asks, and is available almost 24/7 for help via email or office hours. GREAT TEACHER!!
This is an extremely tough course, but he does everything he can do to help it make sense to you. This was probably my favorite class that I took in my major.
Fair is a great teacher and honestly does try. A for effort on his part but his class is ALOT of work and his test are very DIFFICULT! I recommend leblon his tests are fair and passable, unlike Dr. Fair, however u will learn much more in Fairs 231 class than Leblons. Hope that helps.
Dr. Fair is a very direct instructor who expects a lot from his students. The workload is about even throughout the semester but the work is tough. I would take him if you can handle that approach.
Do not take him if you have a choice to take someone else. He wants you to know the book inside and out. Doesn't give half credit. His lab is a nightmare and treats you as if you one one his research students. This guy is unreal. Funny but not good
Fair is a fantastic TEACHER. He really knows how to teach and how to make his students LEARN. not many profs do that. His class is difficult. There's a lot of work involved and a lot of studying. If you're planning on taking the MCAT, i would highly recommend this class because, if you learn the material correctly, you'll know it inside and out.
I "liked" Dr.Fair, but he ruined everything for me this semester. Everything was great all except he had us take 3 exams all within the last 3 weeks of school & was 1-4 chapters on each. My grade hurt bc of this and it was very upsetting that a professor would even do such a thing knowing that your life depends on it for grad school.
I have nothing nice to say about how the class was presented. It was very un organized and off course. I don't think he should be able to get away with this. He should pass everyone with a C or better after what he put everyone through. I'm very frustrated with how everything was handled. :(
Well I'm glad this semester is over. Dr. Fair def was a hard professor but in the end he was a pretty cool guy and told jokes. He did make me feel like I was going to do bad the whole semester which caused my stress level to increases but he only did it so that way students would work hard the whole way through. So I would def take him if you can.
Dr. Fair is a great prof. He knows what he's talking about and really tries to help you understand. He has numerous amounts of practice resources on moodle that really helps. His exams are kinda challenging but with studying makes it passable. I would definitely go to his office hours. In my year he had extra credit questions based on his office!
Easy to talk to, is always in his office. Responds to emails fast. Typed printed notes makes it easier to focus in lecture. a lot of homework but with Ochem you need a lot of practice. All homework online and groups are encouraged. Take him if you want to understand the material. Great Professor
Dr. Fair is a great professor he is always willing to help you with the material. Yeah his tests are hard and he gives a lot of homework but I promise its worth it. If you use the notes he writes the class will be easy but if you don't put in the time don't complain when you fail. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go he notices TAKE HIM!
I must say, JFair is my favorite chemistry professor at IUP. I took Organic with him last fall and he was amazing. Follow his notes and do all the homework! Practice really makes perfect with this. The little book that he tells you to get is truly worth it's weight in gold. I even use it brush up for Biochem. He's a must have professor. Love him!
Hardest class I've ever taken. He moves along way too fast and doesn't take time to make sure his students understand. If you don't read the book along with going to lectures you won't pass.
This class was really difficult. However, he is very quick to respond to questions sent via email. He also basically lives in his office so that students who need help can get it. The homework and tests are difficult. He's super willing to help, which is good because this course is next to impossible.
If you've ever seen a VCR tape play on fast forward that's basically the equivalent of his lectures. He wants you to ask questions but by the time your done trying to understand he is 3 or 4 topics ahead.I got an A in chem 1 because the prof was tough but gave us time to think. Basically, if you don't work fast then you better lube up.
Took him this summer and at first it was so tough people were literally crying on their way out the door after the first exam. It didn't get any easier as the class went on. However, do not prejudge this guy until the class is over. As long as you do what he expects of you and you work hard he will make sure you pass. Great guy and an amazing prof.
Had him for lab. Amazing teacher. He explained things much more clearly than my lecture prof. Still, lots of homework. Makes you watch 1+hr online lecture every week before lab, and postlabs are tough. Final test is worth a lot, but doable if you study the science behind the experiments. Really funny guy, though. I wish I could take him again.
You can't devote enough time to his class in a 24 hour day. Not helpful and expects too much.
I took Dr. Fair for both lab & lecture. One heck of a nice guy! Can be very reasonable when it comes to assignment due dates. That being said, since I took him for both lab and lecture, I felt like I never had free time because of the workload. The workload was more than I ever could've imagined. You can take him for either/or, but don't do both.
He is a great professor. The class itself is very hard and his tests are hard, but I feel like I have learned a lot more than if I would have taken another prof. WONDEFUL for lab.
I had him for lab and by far the best professor I have had for lab. He was very helpful and always answered any questions clearly. There is a lot of work for each lab though. Each lab we had a pre lab video which was normally over an hour long, a pre lab quiz and a post lab quiz or lab report and you have to do a lab notebook the whole year.
Just do all of the work from the blue book and keep up with the online hw assignments. As long as you stay with the class average and up you should pass. He gave us a final that was standardized, but was not too bad compared to his own tests. The final could be used as a overall class grade if you did not do too well on his three exams.
Organic chem with him was the hardest class I've ever taken. Lectures move too fast. Every time you get a question wrong on the homework online you get points off. Homework is supposed to motivate you and boost your grade but his questions makes it do the opposite. Expects WAY too much of his students.
The class itself was very hard. There was a lot of assignments and work, and the tests were hard. However, as a teacher Dr. Fair made sure to help those who sought help. Definitely go to office hours if confused!
Organic Chemistry was extremely hard. The material itself is hard to understand but Fair doesn't make it any easier. He speeds through lectures and gets mad if students don't know the answers in a split second. Overall test average was a 60 percent. He praises students that get 100's and also gave them extra credit but didn't give any to the rest.
First test didn't go as well as I wanted. Went to his office for help and the material really started to click. He was alway in his office and willing to help. My grade went up on the rest of the tests. A really caring prof who wants you to do well and will meet out of his office hours if you can't make it.
If you're taking chem 102, choose Dr. Fair!! Really tries to work with the students to help them understand the concepts. Also, he offers extra credit throughout the semester!
The man cares about his students almost as much as he cares about O-Chem. Which is A LOT! He will bend over backwards for you. Always has extended office hours. Before exams he held study sessions. Fair is a real academic and teaches with his heart. He challenges you to critically think. Class is structured to spoon feed! A true stud professor!
OChem is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken & was considering withdrawing at one point. He convinced me otherwise & worked with me multiple times every week to help me raise my grade from an F to a high C. He really cares about his students & will ALWAYS try to help no matter how busy he is (as long as you put in the time&effort) love him
Dr. Fair is the greatest. I really struggled at first in this class but he was willing to constantly meet me or email me all the time. If you go to his office hours he will make sure you pass. The homework is stupid on sapling but don't pay for chegg because the homework questions are on the test.
I took CHEM 105, as he stated it would be "an easy A"... WRONG!!! This class was an online winter class, and we had group projects (basically impossible with so many varying schedules). The lectures were graded, lots of quizzes and exams, and graded things very tough. His directions are not clear but he expects things in a very particular way.
HORRIBLE professor! I would not reccommend taking him especially for an online class. He assigns way too much work all due in one day. Instead of giving us until the end of the day like any other professor would do to complete an ONLINE assignment, he makes it due at 8am or 8pm. Most of the work was group work for an ONLINE class! DONT TAKE!
Go to his office hours he love to talk and help you with your work. I had him for lab and he is extremely funny and keeps the class in a good mood even tho it is the hardest class most of us will ever take. If you dont understand something go and talk to him he wont just hand you the answer but he will help you think the problem through.
I took Dr. Fairs CHEM 105 course over winter break and it was the easiest class I have ever taken. Quiz questions are taken almost directly from the review sections in the book... If you didnt get an A in the class you probably didnt have the book. There were two group projects at the end, but overall I definitely recommend taking this class.
Dr Fair is by far the best prof at IUP. His class was an was an easy A and he really rewards the students who make an effort to do well.
It was extremely difficult to turn things in because he used platforms other than moodle or D2L. The class is easy overall, but due to my computer not supporting the majority of the needed programs for turning information in, I received a poor grade. He took days to reply to my emails about these problems. I would reccomend in person, NOT online.
I took Professor Fair for CHEM 105 at the beginning of summer online! I usually struggle with chemistry, therefore, I was kind of intimidated with this class being online. Overall, I got an A! I feel that he is a passionate teacher who is willing to help his students get on the right track through his course. He wants to give out good grades!
Great prof! He really cares for his student. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! He will really help you out with the assignments and it will guarantee you a better grade. Overall, a great asset to students.
Dr. Fair has a hard class to teach and there is no doubt about it. Ochem does not come easy for everyone, and especially did not come easy to me. We tend to not like the professor when the class is hard. But, one thing you cannot beat is a professor that is cheering you on to succeed, and that's him. But hang in there, you will pass his course!
This is the worst class I have ever had to take. I am a straight A student. This 3 week summer online course was the worst decision of my life. Obnoxious reading length, excessive assignments, and SO many videos to watch. I am working a full time job to pay for the class but will fail it because I can not give the class 40 hours a week too.
Really enjoyed his class. Took CHEM105 for the Early Summer Session (three week course). Was worried at first, but thoroughly enjoyed the course with him. He graded things quickly, was available via email, laid out a clear grading criteria. I enjoyed this class and the professor. 10/10, would recommend. Put the work in and you will get a good grade
Very vague with feedback. Tells you you're doing a good job, then grades you bad. Most of the answers to his quizzes are on the internet though. Big crime scene reconstruction project that he is so unspecific about. Most of his big assignments are unspecific, yet he obviously is very rigid with what he wants. He makes no sense.
He's a great prof. Lots of work to do in 3 weeks, but save yourself money by not buying the book-everything is on quizlet. He's very accessible by email, and gives great feedback on assignments. He also gives A LOT of extra credit at the end of the course if you open everything. It took my grad from a 90% to a 97%. Def recommend for science w/o lab
Professor Fair is a very UNfair professor. He penalized me for turning in work "too early" but then opened up the following weeks assignments for people to "work ahead". He is also is not clear with his instructions and doesn't email back until it's late and assignments are already due. I would not take his class and if you do just prepare yourself
His winter20-21 forensic chem class was really interesting for me, someone who struggles with chem. You watch the lectures to get graded for them but they are easy to follow and understand as he talks you through it. The test questions come from the book. Make sure you read some specific requirements in forums. Would take again if I had to!
Worst Professor I have ever taken. All tests are to be taken while on zoom and every 10 seconds someone would talk to ask a question. You basically teach yourself everything. If you email for help he says he cant help you. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
While Dr Fair is a good person and takes a lot of time for extra help, the content is IMPOSSIBLE to keep up with. I failed every exam and its basically impossible to time yourself to finish the exam. I spent 2 hours every night before class doing pre-lecture videos. Unless you want to spend 3+ hours EVERY DAY doing problems, don't take this class.
100% would take again. Most caring professor Ive ever had, he even emailed me when I hadnt attended office hours to make sure that I was doing okay. He is super helpful if you dont understand the content. His class is a class you HAVE to pay attention and do the work for because its a difficult course no matter who you take.
I've literally never had a more caring professor! He is always willing to help and goes to extra lengths to do so. He created a note packet along with uploading prelecture videos to watch, so that in class we can focus on problems and questions. I personally didn't use the book, but you have to pay attention and follow along. Allows notes for exams
Dr. Fair is a really good professor. I had him for OChem 2 lab and he was very helpful. OChem 2 is hard to say the least, but he helped with understanding lab techniques. I would say he's a good choice if you need a good ochem lab professor.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Fair wants to see every student succeed, and he gives you the tools to do so. The only thing you have to do is put the work in. His notes are very helpful and help you focus on the important information. Class time was used for examples and questions which I really liked. One of my favorite professors by far.
He really tried his best to make the content understandable and not so intense. He was very open to answering question outside of class and emphasized on the best way to study for his class (which actually helped) I was very nervous going into the class since I'm not the best at chem but he made it enjoyable and understandable.
I took Dr. Fair for my summer O Chem class, and while I wasn’t excited to take a summer class, he made it enjoyable. Yes, O Chem is difficult, but he helped in lots of ways. Either way, you’re going to have to put the work in if you want the grade. He always offered office hours and even curved some tests for us, when he noticed our hard work.
0/10 recommend. Have to put in a LOT of work outside of class to even understand, and even then you still will struggle on the tests.
Avoid if you can. This class was not fun.
all I'm saying is, you know its bad when the SI quits
Everyone knows that O Chem is a tough class to begin with, but Fair made it harder. He is extremely knowledgable about the subject but also can be arrogant and condescending. His tests are extremely difficult, along with homework assignments that sometimes took many hours to complete. He wants 14-16 hours a week spent on the class.Take someone else
1)Naming was taken to seriously in class (ACS exam naming was vastly easier) He would have us go from a fischer projection to a name with S/R E/Z anything you can think of. 2)Tests were timed and extremely stressful and I did good (saw others crying on multiple occasions) 3)Take Leblond for lab 4)pop quizzes on days with lowest attendance 5)GFL
Dr. Fair is a difficult professor, but it is not to a fault. He wants to see his students succeed, and in that way, does everything to provide them with the necessary tools, they just have to take them. His office hours are very beneficial, and outside of them he is easy to contact. He is one of the greatest professors I have had so far
J. Fair was the worst professor I have ever had at IUP. I am a 4.0 student who decided to withdrawal because my mental health could not keep up with his demands. I failed both exams I took while taking his class, and his homework takes hours to complete. He even made the SI quit. Lab reports have to be completed exactly to his standards. Just don't
He is tough but fair, lol. But seriously so long as to put the effort in, you will almost definitely see results in his class. I can say for certain that I would have never learned as much about organic chemistry if it was being taught by a different professor.
I have all As except in CHEM 231. This class felt impossible even with a 13 cr workload. I worked hard for a B and got a C. He insists students should come office hours but when I did, he did not help me with chem, instead babbled about irrelevant topics. I am not taking CHEM 332 bc I would fail. His rating is only good bc he removes the bad ones!
Don't say I didn't warn you. Avoid like the plague. Manipulation from day one that he assumes students are incapable of seeing through. Acts as though he's on the student's side, but this act only persists in so long as it's to his own benefit. Unconscionable amount of homework given through a system riddled with glitches, but it's still your fault
Dr. Fair is probably one of the worst people I have encountered at IUP. He decides his grading on whether he likes you that day or not. He is extremely unprofessional when it comes to his comments during lectures. He claims the content we cover in lecture is equivalent to herpes as it "never goes away". This is only part 1.
Part 2: He is a prof who claims he cares but in reality does not care whether you pass or not. I am understanding of the content being difficult, but there are so many ways to be more lenient when it comes to grading. I also have him for lab, and he honestly makes me miss Dr. Lake.
Dr. Fair made organic chemistry more approachable and fun. He truly cares about his students and will go out of his way to ensure they succeed. He is a tough grader but will curve tests. Read the textbooks and practice the skills constantly to succeed in lecture. Understand each lab and its purpose to succeed in the lab period. No slacking!
Fair is one of the most arrogant people on campus. Likes to talk about himself. Gives so much homework and moves up due dates with no notice. There are pop quizzes, so prepare yourself for that. Lecture note packet and lab manual that he wrote himself are riddled with typos and grammatical errors. Avoid at all costs unless you have to take him
This is a hard class but as long as you put effort into it, Dr. Fair will put effort into helping you. Do the homework and Second Language book (made the skills so much easier) and go to his office hours. He practically gives you the answers for the lab reports. Don't slack off, we had students score in the 90s and the teens for our exams.
Had him for CHEM103 LAB. He was very passionate about teaching, was very kind and funny. Helps students when needed, I recommend going to office hours for pre-labs.
For anyone saying he's a good professor are the only trying to get on his good sid
Says he will give partial credit on tests, yet barely does it. Also, he will sporadically move the due date of homeworks literally over the weekend, and the homework assignments take hours upon hours to do. For taking his class as a part of a MINOR, it is definitely not worth it, and I would avoid taking his class at all costs.
Don't take if you can help it. He has no true grading system, lab is impossible ,and his average exam grade is around 50%. All he does in office hours is talk about random stuff for an hour and doesn't even help you with your questions. He was “happy to report” that the first exam average was “the highest” it's ever been … it was in the mid 50's..
Amazing, kind professor. Explains material well and answers questions quickly. Exams are difficult but if you put in the effort it will pay off. Seems strict at first but is a big teddy bear. Cares for the well-being of his students and wants everyone to do well. Go to office hours as much as possible! Homework was extremely helpful.
At the end of the day, you either take to the way he teaches or you don't. If you take to the way he teaches, you will probably enjoy this lecture and do well. If you do not, as me and numerous other students didnt, youll struggle. If you have to take organic chemistry, you're likely going to have Fair. Buckle up, it's just 1-2 semesters.
