Heavilin has been one of my worst experiences at USU and I'm a senior. His exam averages are 50-60%. He is not willing to work with students. I would suggest taking the class online from another college. Dont waste your time and energy with this class. USU math department is a joke.
It is his way or the highway. If you don't answer the questions with the formula he wants, even with the right answer, you get marked wrong and he doesn't give partial credit. This is definitely not an easy class and he isn't very helpful when it comes to working with the students. If there's a different teacher anyone would be better than him.
Justin is a very clear teacher. Many will complain and say he is super hard but this is college. He is very clear about what he wants. I was not doing well and studied a lot for the final. I did well on the final and ended up with a B in the class. He is fair if you know your shiz.
Fear the beard. His passion for math makes what would usually be a boring lecture quite interesting. A lot of online math homework should be expected, but not dreaded.
Dr. Heavilin is FANTASTIC. I have never had a better math professor. His exams are VERY straight forward- if you do the homework and study that, you will do really well on exams. His lectures will go over your head every time. Just try to follow and make sure you can do the homework (read the book if necessary) and you will do really well.
I like Dr. Heavilin, he is very straightforward, a no B.S. guy, I can see how some might think can be abrasive and such. He can be hard to follow in lecture, but if you read the textbook before class you should be just fine. He gives a lot of real work application in class and HW give a great perspective. Test are very reasonable
This course is not easy! However, I am so happy i took it. There is no partial credit given but you retain a lot of what you learn. Helpful, Insightful, and knows what you need to know. Fass paced but there is a lot to cover! few homework problems but take awhile. Great Course Great Teacher!
This was the most confusing and worthless class i have ever taken at USU. The lectures were to complex and did nothing to prepare you for the test. he did give a nice test prep that shows everything on the test, but not much help was given with it.
The class was challenging, but that is to be expected when learning and exploring calculus. Although his lectures are sometimes difficult to absorb, his office hours and recitation leaders were very helpful. He made many of the lectures more interesting by showing how they're used in the real world (modeling, economics, etc). % star professor.
He's an AMAZING professor. He gives a quiz at the beginning of each class that counts towards participation and it's measured by the i-Clicker. Study EXACTLY what's in the study guide he gives before each exam. The extra credit projects sum up to 10% extra of your grade. He's amazing and really pretty!
Dr. Heavilin is a great instructor. Some may consider his teaching style hard, but he structures the class to challenge students so that we know the material better than most would.
Worst professor I have ever had. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are quizzes at the beginning of each class and that was the only reason I when to class because I didn't understand anything in his lectures I taught myself by struggling through the homework. He gives you a test study guide and it is almost identical to the test which is nice.
If you are willing to work very hard this class will be fine. GET A TI-89!!! This is a MUST. Half the grade is from online homework. That can be good or bad, depending on if you keep up with it. Tests are nearly take home, but he will change things sometimes. Lots of extra credit available. Easy to pass, not easy to get an A
Dr. Heavlin is a hard teacher. He will make you work and will make sure you know your stuff. However he is very personable. I was in a class of over 150 kids and he knew who I was and I went to see him maybe two times. If you don't want to work I wouldn't recommend him. However if you want to know your stuff I highly recommend Dr. Heavlin.
This class was easily the worst class I have taken at USU. He is a terrible professor. He teaches you close to nothing, and if you want to do well you have to teach yourself. Also, he's not willing to work with you at all. He refused to meet with me outside of office hours. Tests are awful, and partial credit is not given. Worst professor I've had!
Look AT STUDY GUIDE
Talks and writes faster than anybody I have ever seen teaching at a whiteboard. Tries to teach math like an abstract philosophy class instead of teaching you how to do math. Most kids taking 1100 are doing it for a requirement so there is no need for that. Tries to scare you. He kind of gave me an off vibe a bit as a guy if you know what I mean.
Worst professor ever! i love math, but he has made me hate it now. His tests are way way hard, i went to the math tutors and they didn't even know how to do some of the questions he gave us on the study guide. Tried to turn in extra credit and he said it wasn't unique enough. When the whole class failed the test he still wouldn't give a curve.
I had a hard time through the semester because I didn't own a TI-89 Calculator, but once I got one I was a bit behind. the online homework is extremely annoying because your answers have to be exactly how it wants them, and there is no turning in homework late. as well as not very applicable on test, the "applications" are most important.
Homework and tests are completely different. Tests are ridiculously hard and nothing like what you do in homework 1st test is taken a month into the semester.
Professor Heavlin is fine as a teacher, but how he teaches is the worst. He frequently goes on tangents of theories that leave you in the dust, so all your learning is in recitation and the book. Hardest class I've ever taken, had three quizzes a week, and two homework sheets as well. Wouldn't recommend taking anything from him.
Heavilin is a fantastic teacher. The rigorous course helped me truly understand the material. He explains things so you actually understand the math. He doesn't give homework in quantity, but quality (it just takes a really long time). He talks to us like he cares and shares funny stories. If you don't have the time for a class from him, make it.
Heavlin teaches math like it's a philosophy and expects you to know a lot more than you should going into the class. Doesn't give a straightforward answer. Exams are impossible. Avoid him like leprosy. Find another teacher.
By far Heavilin is the best math teacher I've had at explaining mathematical concepts. He takes what we do and puts it into perspective for why it's important/useful. I wish I would have had his style of teaching for all of my Calculus classes. As for difficulty, I would say it's the subject that is hard; others couldn't teach the subject better.
He has a very unique way of teaching. It is different then most math classes, so I'm scared I don't know very much until the test . He doesn't grade the homework but the test is based off of the homework. So if you do the homework you'll do really well on the test. Awesome professor.
Easily one of the best math teachers or professors I have ever had. Lectures and recitation weren't mandatory, but highly reccomended. He has great energy and really cares about the students grasping the material, and he even manages to make math entertaining most of the time. Highly reccomended
I've had Professor Heavilin for two classes now, the first being Calc II. He is an amazing teacher and does a really good job helping you understand, and seeing things from the students' perspectives. The only downside to this is that he knows he's good, so he expects that performance from you. As long as you try your best, he is amazing.
He really wants you to know the material and is very passionate about math. However, most students just want to pass, not learn complex math theory. He has tests every two weeks or so, which is very stressful, but will provide a study guide if you ask. He is a really nice guy, but is so smart that lectures often go over your head.
Very easy class to just get a C, but if you want to try and get an A in 2250 I would take it from another teacher. He is very smart, but almost to smart to be teaching . Skips over concepts, even when he can tell the students are lost. Will tell you to just go back and look at it. 90% of your grade is from test. Very different teaching style.
His lectures are super fun and you always learn the theory behind the math instead of a cookie-cutter method, but he will not teach to a test, even the tests he writes. All his tests were multiple choice online, with NO partial credit. If you need/want high grades, beware. If you need to understand math, sit back and enjoy the ride.
He's what I always figured a professor should be- he holds his students to a high standard and teaches concepts thoroughly so that you can really understand. I always left his class feeling inspired. I didn't even know my brain could think math like that. It has been a couple of years, but I look forward to taking another class from him again soon.
Had some good lectures, he is very entertaining. However, he's really smart (obviously, at least at math) and expects everyone to be at the same level. I never felt like he cared much about our success as students; no partial credit, you have to work hard and long if you want a good grade.
Awesome. I loved the structure of his class and he was good to work with. He holds his students to a very high standard but listens to your concerns as well. Just one example of that is in the middle of the semester he sent out a survey. From our responses he changed the class structure slightly to do what the students thought was best.
I wish I hadnt taken this class from Heavilin. It ruined my 4.0 gpa and I didnt learn a thing. He may be entertaining at first but the lectures didnt match the homework or the tests. He also has a really large ego and this class caused several breakdowns throughout the semester. Will not recommend this professor to anyone.
Justin Heavilin at first comes across as a good professor. There's a heavy homework load, but he assures you that everything will be alright. However, as the semester goes on, it becomes clear he doesn't care about those that struggle, as we were frequently rebuked for not being smart. He's unorganized, but holds us responsible for his mistakes.
doesn't care about students. multiple choice quizzes simply have wrong answers. He is unorganized, makes mistakes, blames canvas, but doesn't account for any of it. It is up to you to make up the difference. Blows off concerns After the final, I was passing the class. When it went on my transcript, I failed. When I emailed, no answer.
Very different method of teaching, he likes to make you think through the process of coming up with a formula or solution, which is good but he moves extremely fast in the lectures so asking questions and taking good notes is very difficult, but extremely necessary. Recitations are a must to get through the class
THE WORST. His lectures were more of a show than anything else. His ego gets in the way of learning the material, and I consistently left lecture with more questions than answers. He had the WORST exams. Wrong answers, questions w/ typos, etc. I'm a math major, 4.0 student, got an A, and can say that he's the worst professor I've ever had.
Sometimes, I don't hate him for trying to get us killed during the "active shooter" code blue. Maybe he was actually just trying to do us a service by ending our suffering from his awful class. Bit of an extreme decision on his part... next time he should just try providing his students with resources and feed back so they can actually learn.
Dr. Heavilin has typos on his quizzes (frequently rendering his answers wrong or problems unsolvable), but he refuses to open the quizzes to student scrutiny so we can correct it. If they're brought to his attention, he says "don't worry, I adjust quiz scores," but adjustments seem more random than accurate. Doesn't care about students.
No idea where the positive reviews are coming from (maybe he's pulling a Kevin Durant?) A teacher's core job is to help students understand material; instead Heavilin helps you understand why he is a veritable math god by teaching at a level that doesn't actually help students learn, but inflates his sense of self instead. Pompous egotist.
Dr. Heavilin is the best professor (and maybe teacher) I've ever had. He's extremely good at math and he also knows how to communicate that knowledge to you. But don't get me wrong, this is a HARD CLASS, and he does have very high standards. You need to do the homework, even though he doesn't make you turn it in, and you NEED to read the book.
See, here you are, looking at "Rate my Professor" wondering if this professor is worth your while and your tuition. Its not in the slightest. Do yourself a favor, for the sake of your GPA and wallet, don't take Heavilin. I am certain that this is the worst three credits anybody in the United States can have the opportunity to take. You're warned.
Tends to waste lectures on material that is not relevant to the exams. Expect him to go off on a tangent. Does not want students to know what they got right or wrong on tests. The worst Professor I have ever had.
I took him for my Calc 2 & did awful in the class. However, he taught me so much more than what the class was and actually showed some real-world scenarios for math that I could not see where it could be used. I Then took calc 2 again tlater with a new teacher. Went to class the first day to see it was pointless because i learned everything from b4
Heavilin is a fantastic professor. He works extremely hard to prepare lectures that inspire students. Heavilin provides several tools (guided notes, homework problems, lectures, etc). In my class, many with sour opinions of him admitted to never even opening the textbook (something nonnegotiable in this course). Read negative comments cautiously!!!
Coming from someone who took calc2 AND calc3 from Heavilin, and hated him just as much as the next guy, this is my conclusion: work hard and youll love his class, dont and youll hate it. A good study group and attending office hours are a must. Its easy to hate him if you want to, but he really does care. This class suits his teaching style.
He loves to just go over esoteric theory in lecture, give somewhat easy homework, and then make up the hardest questions he can for the quizzes and tests. Avoid this guy.
Set tests including questions that he had not yet covered in lecture - and then didn't drop the questions from the grade, because we "chose" to take the exam on day 1 of its availability instead of day 2. Goes on tangents in lectures - wildly entertaining, but in his own words (!) he's not a teacher and will not teach you calculus.
To be honest, from what I had heard about Dr. Heavilin I was scared to take his class. If this is you, DON'T WORRY. Dr. Heavilin does well at helping you learn your stuff. He expects you to handle your own learning like a responsible adult, so be prepared put in some work. Do the homework, ask questions, be the good student you are, and it'll be OK
Note, taking the combined lin al-diff eq is only faster than taking them separate if you pass. Justin is a good guy, but this class is wicked hard.
Great guy, teaches the class well.
I took Math 2210 from Heavilin and had a negative experience, so I wasn't excited when I found out I had to take Math 3310 from him. However, he greatly surprised me, and he did an amazing job teaching Math 3310. If you aren't the type to work hard, I doubt you will like him.
Heavilin does not care about individual students. He is lazy, and relies on his TA's to teach. He is a poor lecturer and cannot convey mathematical information to save his life. He wastes time trying to fit tons of information into 50 min lectures. He avoids answering questions. He thinks it is funny that he is known as a notoriously bad teacher.
Dr. Heavilin is always willing to help- Especially if you are actually trying!! All these negative reviews are likely from students that arent putting the work in. Hes hilarious and out of a class size of 175ish he remembered my name and multiple others as well.
Dr Heavilin is by far the worst mathematics professor I've ever had. Makes fun of students with questions, wastes time on long-winded proofs of simple concepts, ignores hard parts in lectures but puts them on the quiz. Horrible teacher.
The first email I sent to him is about the homework, like many other students mentioned, is not quite covered by his class material. He replied me that international students have issues with English, and the next reply is that I did not read the book carefully. Maybe I should pay Udamy $50 for the same stuff, rather than $1000 get insulted.
Professor Heavilin does not care about his students. I sent him 9 emails throughout the semester. He only replied to 2 with terribly unhelpful answers. His lack of availability is unacceptable for an online class. Lectures were hard to follow and sometimes he "didn't get around" to recording lectures so we had to rely on recitations and essays.
Dr. Heavilin makes you think and expand your brain. I appreciated all of the papers he picked for us to read and study. I appreciated that he recorded some videos on how to read the papers. I appreciated that he was available 3x a week on Zoom to answer questions. Recitation online started off slowly, but turned into a great asset.
He relies a lot on his TAs to help teach. Having both a study group and a good relationship with your TA are so important. The course is absolutely overwhelming until you get past chapter 2 in the book. He didn't have exams, at least not in the traditional sense. I spent about 4-5 hours a day on the homework for the first several weeks.
This was a weird semester with Covid, but Dr Heavilin adapted really well to teaching online. He posted 1 or 2 videos each week that were generally about 15 minutes long. There were generally 2 quizzes and a writing assignment each week. They definitely required a good amount of effort, but all the tools were learned in the videos/recitations.
Most weeks he would post a video walking through some of the notes, but it wasn't a difficult class at all as long as you're willing to think. It's not until halfway through the semester that you even kinda need to go to recitation. Most assignments are just multiple choice canvas quizzes or an essay you just have to reflect on.
Dr. Heavilin is wickedly smart and the material is fascinating, but this class was very disorganized. Learned half the material in the last 2 weeks. Definitely attend recitation. Form a study group!! Online format didn't work well for lectures. I know many majors require 3310 (esp. CS), but if you can afford to wait to take it in person, do so.
So I took this class during Fall 2020 during Covid-19 so the course was mostly online. The TA I had was awesome she was the reason I managed to pass the class. As for Dr. Heavilin, the homework assignments are very tricky and he tries to confuse you. You don't have tests but you have sorta quizzes where you get 2 attempts usually but are very hard.
His class is very interesting and now I think about math in a different way. Overall his lectures are short and do not really cover what he quizzes on. He is unreal smart but to the point where he makes you feel dumb in class if you do not know the correct answer. Email correspondence isn't any better, he is not helpful , short and condescending.
Justin Heavilin is extremely unprofessional. I took him online and the whole course is just watching videos of an MIT professor instead of him, and he has his own videos where he rambles and gets off topic and theorizes. Doesn't provide adequate example problems. His course is setup in an extremely stressful way. Avoid him at all costs.
Dr. Heavilin picks and chooses which emails to respond to and when. He doesn't work with concerned students. His current HW policy is both unfair and needs to be revised (you can only miss 1 point on each HW to UNLOCK the next one) Don't understand one concept? Say goodbye to your GPA. This man is smart, but needs to see eye to eye with students.
The environment that Dr. Heavilin creates in his classroom is not one of compassion. I went to his office hours the first week with a few questions and was told that if I didn't already understand the things I had questions about I needed to change my major. I also sent over 25 emails and got responses back for 3 of them.
I have had Dr. Heavilin two semesters in a row now and I hope I never have to take a course from him again. The courses have been online but half the time he does not even post lectures for the homework assignments. Most of the homework assignments either have typos or just straight up wrong answers. He rarely responds to emails as well.
Yes he is a bit lazy, but I sure learned a lot from this class, and is that not what I wanted? When there is a lecture posted, it usually covers a huge chunk of what we will be learning. Also the recitations really help because that is the place where we can ask questions. My main concern is that some group members do not contribute enough.
I'd previously taken math 2250 with him before I dropped it. I can't tell if it was too difficult of a class or if he was hard to learn from but Math 3310 is what I'm taking right now with him, and it's great. I hardly attend recitation, which is the only synchronous part of the class. Be willing to read, learn and do the assignments :)
If you think you can succeed by relying solely on Dr. Heavilin or the recitation instructors for effective teaching and help, good luck with that. The provided notes are often cryptic or incomplete. You will be writing weekly essays as well. If you want to succeed in this class, you will have to already Discrete math beforehand.
The notes for this class were okay for the first little while of the class, then there were just no videos to explain what was going on. There were papers due every week. His HW policy is trash, he claims that when canvas makes an error its not the students fault, but when it happens to me it was my fault that it didnt work.
We weren't provided very helpful videos for the differential equations portion, though the linear algebra videos were better. Also, you are required to watch MIT's very own Gilbert Strang, who I should really be rating a 5/5 for being the actual teacher of the class. Dr. Heavilin over relies on his TA's and Dr. Strang's videos. No tests though.
The real problem with this class is that if you want to actually understand the math, you have to put in an insane amount of time, I got an A but remember nothing. He didn't even give us videos a couple of weeks during the diffEq part. Also, a lot of his homework/tests have problems with having the actual right answer. Dr. Strang 5/5, textbook 2/5
You definitely have to think a lot in this class. Prof Heavilin is a pretty great teacher, and I enjoyed the class at first when the papers were individual, but when we were split into mandatory groups to write the papers and didn't have a chance to choose our groups, that really sucked.
All of the homework problems were wrong and the emphasis on tests is way too high. Blistering course pace as if the material wasn't already hard. Lecture and recitation spend all of the time deriving formulas and explaining the math, leaving you helpless on the large amount of homework due.
Not very accessible and often confusing. We watched videos a couple times a week but they didn't always make a ton of sense. Homework quizzes were usually pretty short and not crazy hard. We did write essays almost every week, but they weren't too hard as long as you're willing to THINK about the material. Material isn't difficult, just confusing.
His calc 3 class wasn't too bad. Lectures can be boring but you can do the homework unlimited times within the couple days it is open and then the tests are exactly like the homeworks. There are six tests, one for each chapter. They are easy to pass if you understand the homework. You can use matlab in the tests.
Lectures are pointless and don't cover needed material. Tests are extremely difficult.
Dr Heavilin is very knowledgeable about mathematics. Although, he doesnt know how to teach that to a student. His lectures are interesting if you love proofs, if you want to learn how to do the problems he quizzes on youre on your own. His homework has has a lot of errors without showing the correct answer. Very difficult to learn from mistakes.
Worst experience Ive had in a math class during college so far. Dr. Heavilin rambles and goes on tangents during lectures making it hard to follow him. Oh btw there is 9 exams in the class which account for a total of 90% of your grade. The class is set up so you really wont remember anything if you are trying to pass.
I wouldn't wish Heavilin on my worst enemy. If you have any other options, take them. The homework had more uncorrected mistakes than correct answers, so you cant rely on that for practice. The applications are the same. If you take a class from Heavilin, be prepared to be your own professor bc he certainly isn't one, nor will he ever email back.
To understand the lectures you need to read the book and do your homework before class, which is very backwards. What angered me most is the homework was often bugged, so you never knew if you did it wrong or if the problem was messed up. Worst thing was he added a question onto one of the applications the night it was due without even notifying us
Just dont take any of his classes. Trust.
Doctor Heavilin is the Grinch who stole my scholarship. Needed a 3.5 gpa and he doesnt give a minuses or b pluses so the last week of the semester my grade dropped from an a to a b. Hes horrible at explaining the material as well. I didnt learn a thing from him, only from the tutoring center. Avoid at all costs.
6 non cumulative test based on hw given 2-3 times a week. His homework is flawed way to often. He give out extra credit if you find them and punished if you can't. His lectures tend to be quite esoteric in nature. Is quite a poor teacher, he knows his stuff but doesn't know how to teach it. The book gives examples but they are to generic.
It is possible to pass this class, but don't count on the professor to help you pass it or ever answer your emails. Lectures are absolutely pointless, you only need to go to recitations. Don't expect to get an accurate grade either as the majority of the homework is bugged and you will likely never see it get corrected.
Rude and impatient
Take this class from another teacher. You will not get any feedback on your work since everything is on Canvas, and there is no partial credit on the tests. The average on all the tests was around a 60%, and I don't think anyone ever got an A. So you've been warned.
Teaches without shoes or any desire to educate. Instead of fixing his bugged homework he sits in his rocking chair thinking of the medieval torture method to use for the next lecture. The speed of the chapters is almost as fast as my will to live is disappearing.10/10 would rather walk on Legos barefoot than have to see this barefoot buffoon again.
Professor Heavilin spends hours on a proof and then tell you the formula or equation you need and won't explain how to use it on homework or tests, the textbook gives more help than he does. His homework has countless errors so you can't tell if you do anything correct. I went to take the final on the first day of finals, the test was locked.
The class was difficult, but I learned a ton! Dr. Heavilin is interesting to talk to, so go to office hours and talk about interesting stuff from the class.
The worst professor, he does not explain how to do the homeworks and expects us to be able to use the textbook that is beyond confusing. His lectures are completely useless, the recitation is slightly helpful but my TA was unable to solve most of his problems in the homework. When I went to him to ask for help his response was tough luck.
I don't know why he has so many poor reviews. Dr. Heavilin is THE BEST math professor I've had. He adjusts the way assignments and tests go for the benefit of students. He is always very good at breaking down functions and making sure you understand how they work and apply in the real world. Highly suggest taking his classes!
Not sure why so many people don't like him, but his lectures are defiantly the most engaging that I've had so far in college. Make sure you go to recitation otherwise you're going to struggle with homework.
I enjoyed his teaching style and he always made class interesting and easy to pay attention to. He's kind of odd, but it doesn't affect his teaching, and maybe even makes it better because you pay attention to him more because of it. Recitation is super useful and it always made a really big difference. I don't think I would've done well w/out it.
His lectures are awful more often than not he would not teach you how to do the math or homework. The structure of the class is nice, with unlimited attempts on homework, and two attempts on tests except the final. To pass his class I would recommend skipping the lectures, reading the textbook, and attending the recitation.
This is the hardest class I've taken at USU, it's doable though. Read the book before coming to class and learn through doing the homework and you can make it through.
Heavilin is lazy and unempathetic. Homework has frequent mistakes. Until taking this class, the worst grade I had ever gotten on any math test was an 87 percent. My test average in this class is 61 percent. Tests have wildly unreasonable numbers and no calculators. I had to cube 24 once by hand, unavoidably. Not cool.
The test questions are taken from homework, so if you understand the homework you will do fine on the tests. The course is not graded on many things and the final is worth 25% of the total grade which is what brought my grade down. He gave free extra credit a couple of times. Recitation is what helped prepare me most for the homework.
Dr. Heavilin is a great professor and I enjoyed his class. Even though my grade says otherwise haha. This class was a struggle for me, but Dr. Heavilin is always willing to coach you to get through the class if you put in the work. He is very intelligent and funny too so it makes class time go by fast. I would recommend going to recitation as well.
I was told that Heavilin was a terrible teacher, that isn't true. He gives you plenty of resources to understand what you are learning. The TA's are always there to help you and the math center is a big help as well. The tests are all based on the homework so you will pass them if you understand and do the homework. If you fail, it's your fault.
I really loved taking Lin Dif from Heavlin in all of his strange glory. Honestly halfway convinced that he's insane. What a great teacher. Homework was TOUGH and exams were TOUGH, especially the first four weeks of class. After those first four weeks the class is a lot easier. I learned so much from this professor and have so much respect for him.
Honestly, I have enjoyed this class and I am currently taking lindif from him. Lectures are actually pretty entertaining and relevant to the course however figuring the homework usually requires fair bit of work but it's nice that the homework and the test are literally the same thing.
I enjoyed his lectures a lot, had him for calc 3 and discrete. He can be quick in the lectures but I asked him to re-explain when I got lost and he made sure I understood from where I got off. He made up for any mistakes on his end as far as homework or whatever. Personally thought he was great.
I really enjoyed his lectures. Sometimes they were fast paced but when I asked questions he backed up to right where I got lost and made sure I understood. If you're prepared and ask questions you'll be fine. I think he's great.
Dr. Heavilin appears to be the most polarizing prof at USU. He is certainly my favorite. Very organized, communicates effectively, and gives clear lectures. The test is always based off of the homework questions, so its easy to study. Unlimited homework attempts are the best part. Math is at this level is hard and you have to put work in.
Don't be afraid of Lin-Diff, especially with Dr. Heavilin. I enjoyed every minute of this course and would take it again in a heartbeat. Dr. Heavilin made me love math again. Very organized class, straightforward grading, and we always knew what was on the test, no surprises. Go to class and do your homework and you'll get a good grade.
Unapologetic professor that knows his stuff. Was nervous to take 2250 from his because of "oh your taking it with Heavilin?!" comments. I ended up really enjoying his lectures and teaching style. Funny dude with a deep understanding up the subject. Don't expect it to be easy. Only big complaint I had was taking the square root of 16,129 on a test..
Dr. Heavilin gets a bad wrap and I don't see why. His class is incredibly well structured, and he allows two attempts on all exams besides the final. He gives amazing lectures, and his Lin-Diff lectures are a big step up from Calc 3. The only thing to watch out for is no calculators on exams so make sure you can multiply and divide by hand.
Heavlin isn't necessarily a bad professor but the things he taught in lecture didn't relate to the homework. I also felt that he wrote his exams to trick students which in my opinion is rather low. If given the option I would skip lecture rather than recitation since recitation is where all the learning actually takes place.
Pros: Lecures are mostly informative. We had 2 attempts per quiz, no midterms, HW was due when the chapter quiz opened & unlimited HW attempts, dropped the lowest HW &quiz score (all will somewhat change). Cons: You Need 2 recitations to understand the material, Will Not help you learn from quiz mistakes, Final exam is weighed HEAVY for a 23Q Exam!
Heavilin gets a bad rap but he's really a good teacher. He really helps you understand the course content and how it relates to the real world. If you need help with the homework go spend a few hours in the AMLC, I usually had my homework done on the Monday of the week by doing that. Make friends with others in the class to get other help.
Heavilin is nowhere near as bad as I had heard. I was genuinely so scared to take his class, especially when I found out I needed knee surgery mid-semester. He was kind and understanding and worked with me throughout my recovery and I was able to get an A in the class. As long as you work with your recitation leader you will be fine.
Dr. Heavilin assigns an unbelievable amount of homework and doesn't actually lecture on anything that is on the homework or tests.
Lectures: Derive equations and do easy examples, very engaging. Professor: Great guy, wise and passionate. Homework: harder questions that take time to learn, use textbook and recitation. Exam/quizzes: Exact questions from homework with different numbers, also two attempts at the time. No calculators, so know how to do algebra and arithmetic.
Very strange class. Grading isn't hard at all he gives a bunch of extra credit at the beginning and test questions are just like the homework. Lectures are very unhelpful though. He goes ridiculously in-depth into proofs to the point where you have no clue what's being proved anymore. He makes complicated integrals for concepts that aren't hard.
Terrible materials, be prepared to self teach
Math was enjoyable untill I took this class
If you take ANY of his classes be prepared to attend every recitation and be in the textbooks for notes. The exams don't allow calculators, but you are allowed 2 attempts. This professor only writes on the whiteboard and it's often just rambling. Go for any other math teacher.
If you take linear algebra before this class you will do great. Unfortunately I did not and left many lectures more confused than when I entered. All of this class is taught as it relates linear algebra so not having a good grasp on topics like vectors and matrices will make it hard. If you really love math this is a good class, others not so much.

Worst professor I've had in college. He gives hard tests and gives questions that he's never discussed in class. If I can help it, I will never take a class from him again
Dont do it guys. This is your warning. I have always been ahead in math. Always. His lectures are based on the conceptual theories around multivariable calculus. However the homework and tests are straight math. Also, the tests are with 80% of your grade. If you want your gpa to survive, please, take Calc 3 from literally anyone else!!!!!
great professor. difficult class, set up to learn, but it takes a lot of time
DONT take Heavilin for Calc 3. His class is of 80% tests, and the tests are DIFFICULT; he gives you two hours to complete 32 questions. All he teaches are concepts, so his lectures do NOT help with the homework. I was less confused when I didn't show up to class. I had to teach myself this entire semester by going to the AMLC and using ChatGPT.
He won't let you look at tests AFTER they have closed to see what you got wrong. Preaches learning and not to look at grades, but then wont let you look at what you did wrong. Makes fun of students when they ask questions. Take ANY other teacher, please, I beg you.
His lectures are difficult to follow and the tests are worth so much of your grade. I also wish he let us use a calculator. If you want to think hard, take his class, if you want to pass the class, don't take his class.
Heavilin goes through material very quickly in lectures. He only offers one hour of office hours a week, so I had to rely on the Aggie Math Learning Center, recitations, and review nights to study. Exams are heavily weighted and include conceptual questions you can't really prepare for. Be ready to teach yourself a lot.
Lectures were a must go (not graded, but you'd miss a lot, and no recordings or notes). Whirlwind of material everyday. Homework was manageable, tests were barely survivable. Teaching style was very lively, engaging, but had me stressing. Just a whirlwind of a class. Grading (and curving up:)) ended up vague at the end, especially with the final.
Lectures are very fast but well thought out. Recitations and Office hours with recitation leaders were essential. If you miss a lecture you could be behind for the rest of the unit because they are not posted. Tests are easy to study for because almost all questions come from the homework which you have infinite attempts on.
He teaches math like a mathematician, going through all the proofs and logic behind everything during lectures. A lot of people like that, a lot of people don't. His lectures are very good, and you will want to go to every single one, because he doesn't do lecture recordings at all. The homework is light, the lectures are fun, the exams are death
This professor likes to spend every in class lecture teaching about material that is not on the homework or the exams. You will have to teach yourself the material for the homework. Do yourself a favor and don't take any classes from him. Only positive to this class is every once in a while the professor might say something that causes you to smirk
Textbook is a free online resource. You'll need to attend every lecture. Professor Heavilin moves through content very quickly and expects high fluency with the material. If you can keep up, you'll gain a very solid foundation of calculus as a whole. A few (reasonably brutal) tests are ~80% of grade. Highly recommend.
Justin Heavilin is a great professor and really knows his stuff however I took his class first Calc one class and had to drop it he had no practice questions for in or out of class and taught a different method than the rest of the math department. I thought he was an awesome person but don't take his math 1210 unless you are gifted at math
His tests are very unfair and unnecessarily difficult. You will spend all your time studying how to do well on his test rather than the actual material.
Heavilin fails to teach in a manner that is understandable. When I heard of a new mathematical concept, it was, at times, abstract -- then, Heavilin would explain and it became impossible to understand. I have found that lecture time is better spent in the library. He has been notorious for years, suffering through his classes is a rite of passage.
Heavilin is an abomination to the math program. Every math professor I have ever had at Utah State was incredible; however, he is the exception. His exams are a timed trial that in no way reflect your knowledge of the course. The exam averages for both my classes with him have NEVER exceeded a failing grade. Bad teacher. Shouldn't have a job.
After taking Calculus three and Linear Differential Equations from this Professor I can confidently say that this is the worst math professor I have had in my entire education. Exams are not realistic to what is taught on homework and it is nearly impossible to finish every question in the short time that is assigned during class.
Had Heavilin for Calc III. Tests are unreasonably hard, mainly for the time constraint. Normally a teacher TEACHES you, but he will yap for an hour about random stuff and then give you an MCAT equivalent exam. This is probably why he is just considered a "Senior Lecturer" and not a professor, because he has no business teaching this course, or any.
This class was one of the hardest I have taken. The lectures are a stream of consciousness that's hard to follow, and you need to do a lot of extra work outside class to understand the material/pass the tests because the test material is not really taught in class. The TA said that he was teaching Calc 2 and 3 concepts even though it was Calc 1.
If you want to hate you life for the next 15 weeks, take Dr. Heavlin. He doesn't teach any of the exam material, rather he focuses on theory and other topics irrelevant to the course. In-class assignments are heavily weighted and nearly impossible to understand. I quit looking both ways before crossing the street on my way to his class.
He is very theoretical and by the time you finish the course you know the subject intimately. It is hard and he doesn't show the application to homework and test problems, but you know why it works and the theory behind it. It is hard but my next Math class is going to be so easy.
Dr. Heavilin has been the worst professor I've had. I took him for Calc 3 and Linear Diff. He assigns huge amounts of homework but doesn't show how to do it, focusing only on theory. Exams are random homework problems: 3 tests, 45 minutes, 30% each. The class feels set up for failure and destroyed my confidence in math.
Very rough course, but you'll learn a lot. Lectures are dense and fast. Three absolutely brutal tests make up 90% of the grade. Class average on first exam was 52%. No exam statistics are released, and students cannot review the exams. Lectures are good, but Heavilin makes tests unreasonably difficult in both content and transparency.
Hard subject. Lectures are not mandatory when I took it, but he was talking about changing that. Tips to pass the class: -AMLC help and go to the TA office hours -Look through the book for bold and boxed equations -do homework religiously -memorize the little tricks he mentions in class
