This guy is the man! Pickett is funny and an enjoyable professor. His tests are pretty hard and you will need to study a lot for them. Grade consists of 3 exams and attendance at 5 random discussion classes. Interesting class!
Terrible class/prof. I love CJ but this class has made me nearly hate it. The tests are far more difficult than they should be. The only grades you get are from 3 impossible tests and a quiz grade for discussion attendance. The class avg for the 1st test was in the 60's and he refused to curve it. It'd be absurd if our semester grades aren't curved
You HAVE to write down everything he says during lectures, he even says so the first day of class. Your grade consists of 3 test and random attendance and if you're lucky some extra credit. He expects you to at least get 60's on his exams.Really hard class to get better than a c in unless you don't want a social life...
The professor expects a lot from his students. 2 of the 4 assignments were difficult and very time consuming. His exams are essay format and he expects about 3-4 pages for each question (4 questions total) written on non-lined paper. Holds a very high standard for his exams.
Really cool guy but not the best of professors. All tests are directly taken from the notes but there are 5 or 6 pages of notes per class. Entire class is understanding theories, but rather the specifics and details of a theory. Tests are 90% of the grade so do well on the test or youll do poorly
This professor is terrible. He is not able to communicate with students and this professor makes me strongly nervous cause he just read his own paper.
Here's the deal straight forward. Pickett is the man. One of my favorite professors. No duh you have to work this is the number 2 school for criminal justice in the nation so stop complaining. In my opinion, his class isn't that bad. If u go to class everyday and take detailed notes and study from those notes you will get a B no doubt about it.
Tough... He does not CURVE!! Its all about those 3 tests and the only way you will pass is by going to class and writing good notes. Take Warden if u can
Dr. Pickett is an extremely funny and intelligent guy. The negative reviews are just because people simply don't want to put the work in. There are only 3 tests and no final, and there is no reason that one can't get a good grade in this course, other than lack of effort. Attendance and good note-taking is the key to this class
This guy is definitely one of the best professors I have had at the university. There are 3 tests. Mostly all the material on them is straight out of the class notes, so write everything he says or record it.He's definitely underrated. Really funny nice guy. If you need help he is extremely good about getting you whatever you need. Take his class!
His test are hard he does not curve text, they do not come out of his note or the textbook.
Pickett is awesome. The class is not easy but it is very possible to get a decent grade if you take notes and study prior to tests. He keeps the class interesting and enjoyable to go to. It was the only class of the year I actually wanted to go to. Highly recommended.
Pickett is an awesome professor, he loves the material he talks about which makes the class much more enjoyable. He does not take attendance but you have to go to class and take notes. As long as you do that and study before exams you will do very well in the class.
Entertaining professor, obviously very educated on the subject. Tests are hard but not impossible; study a lot and be ready to write. Attendance is mandatory as you will NEED your lecture notes for tests. Assignments are hard but if you go to his office hours he's more than willing to meet with you and help.
Dr. Pickett is hands-down one of the best professors I have had so far in college. His lectures do not drag on, and he keeps them very entertaining and casual. Attendance is essential for the notes. The BlackboardTextbook readings are ESSENTIAL. There are only 3 exams, and they are very difficult! He gives some extra credit.
Dr. Pickett made a 9:20 class fun and interesting. He's a great professor and even though sometimes the material is hard, he makes it fun. Definitely take his class. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go to class, don't expect a good grade because you'll only need the lecture material on tests, the book is useless.
Spectacular teacher! He clearly knows what he's talking about, however this is the hardest class I took this semester. Take EXTREMELY good notes in class and write down virtually everything he says especially what he repeats in passing because they most likely will show up on the exam. Study in advanced bc its hard to cram for the three tests
One of the hardest Criminal Justice classes I've taken. Pickett is a great professor. He knows what he is talking about and is very knowledgeable on all the material, but his tests are extremely hard. If you don't go to every single class and write down every word he says, you won't pass. Tests are mainly on lecture. Go to class! Do NOT skip.
Dr. Pickett is extremely smart and funny, and I find myself fortunate to have taken his class. Extraordinarily passionate on the topic of Criminology & translates it into casual lectures that are easy to understand. Only 3 exams that are VERY difficult (but fair), and you must attend the lectures and do readings if you expect to pass.
Hes really funny and laid back but do not be fooled. Do not miss one class because each one is important. Literally write every word he says too. There only three tests and luckily he gave a few points extra credit here and there. But, in all he teaches you many things that you would actually want to know. Each and every lecture is interesting.
Great class to take. His lectures are always interesting and you can tell that he is passionate about his work. He only does give three tests a year that make up your whole grade and they are definitely not easy. If you study hard though and MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS GO TO CLASS you should be able to do well.
His class is extremely interesting and you learn things you actually wanna learn, plus he's gorgeous and funny! Make sure to read the extra readings he posts on BlackBoard they're on the test. 3 Tests not that bad if you study, Usually an A student and got a B+ average.
He did a great job keeping this course interesting but it was still very difficult. Tests were very specific and if you have to both read and go to class if you want to even pass.
Hard class, really cool guy. Write down everything he says, and don't skip class. He makes boring lectures fun.
Pickett is hands-down one of the best professors at the school. Smartest person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Lectures are hilarious and off-the-cuff, but you need to SHOW UP AND TAKE NOTES, or you will fail, because the class is brutally hard. TAKE NOTES ON ALL THE READING AND STUDY. The three exams are gauntlets and wicked difficult.
Okay, kiddies, listen up. This guy is friggin awesome. Like, hands down one of my favorites ever. But just because he's hilarious and engaging and will make you want to learn more about what he's teaching, doesn't mean that the tests are easy. They are not. Study like hell and you'll be fine. 10/10 would take again. Pickett rocks.
super interesting class and Pickett is an amazing speaker; he makes the lectures go by fast with witt. However its hard, ur hand will hurt after lectures & u better study for DAYS for the 3 non accumulative tests. attendance is not mandatory, but I think I would have failed if I missed a class. disscussions on fri help a ton and clarify things.
He is a good guy and he's nice but this is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. If you're not a criminal justice major and are only doing this for an elective don't bother!!!! Super hard tests, super long and difficult readings.
Pickett is a great professor and you should be hyped to have him on your schedule. He's charming and funny and a great speaker. However, this is an incredibly hard class. You have to go to every single lecture and take dilligent notes or you may as well drop the course. Your grade is comprised of 3 tests all scoed out of 100. They are not easy.
He is very passionate about what he is teaching. The class is really interesting but hard. If you don't show up to class, you won't pass. Take detailed notes and do all of the readings. Tests are difficult.
Funny teacher and very engaging. However, tests are difficult
Dr. Pickett is easily one of the best professors at UA. His lectures are incredible: off-the-cuff, hilarious, and you'll learn a lot of interesting stuff. When I took it: 3 MC exams only, no TA/discussion. The tests are HARD. Go to class, do the readings, STUDY. He expects a lot - and rightfully so, because you will learn alot in this class.
By far the best class I've taken in college. Take him. You'll learn a lot. His class is not hard just pay attention and listen to what he has to say. His class will change the way you view a lot of things. (For the better). I feel extremely fortunate to have taken his class. I got a C+ in the class with minimal studying.
He is a great professor. If you pay attention and are interested in the subject it isn't too hard BUT YOU DO HAVE TO STUDY. He is funny and keeps the class as interested as possible. If you take good notes, you don't need the textbook
I took him three semesters ago. Nice guy, keeps class interesting. You can tell he is very passionate about what he does. Exams were multiple choice, not to bad. I didn't open the book, just took wrote down a lot of notes. His exams are 95% his lectures. Got a solid A in the class
As long as you take detailed notes and pay attention during lecture, it's not a difficult class. Don't skip and don't just rely on the power-points. I highly suggest meeting him outside of class BEFORE the first exam. He'll review your notes, let you know what some main points are, and answer any questions you may have.
You really have to listen and takes notes on everything he says because he doesn't post things on his slides. He's a cool guy, though. He's nice but a hard grader. Most of the grades rely on the tests.
I took Pickett's crim class first semester freshmen year and really enjoyed it. He is super hilarious, but his class is no joke. It was pretty difficult, at least in terms of the exams. Go to class and take notes, not everything he writes down is on the test, but everything he says is.
Professor is amazing but the class is really hard, show up to class and take good notes
Prof. Pickett was by far one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He is brilliant, makes the lectures very interesting and cares about his students. Be ready to do a lot of readings and work hard for your grade. I took this for my major but would 10/10 take another course with him again.
Probably one of THE best professor UAlbany has to offer. He teaches in such a relatable way and makes complex topics so interesting. I looked forward to his class every day and was bummed that it was only 55 mins. You literally have to write every word he says, so take good notes. The test was challenging but not impossible. He's super cute too !
He doesn't take attendance but GO TO CLASS. He doesn't use power points he just lectures. Very hard class but he's a super cool guy. Only 3 tests per semester.
By far best professor I've ever had
Really cool guy and very intelligent to say the least. I am really into his lectures and I take really good notes and I perform well on the exams. Ive learned more from this dude than any other professor, dont be scared of his class just show up and study hard for three to four days before the test and youll be in good shape.
Pickett is a good professor. He is well versed in what he teaches, and he is clear when he teachers. He does not post the slides online, so you really need to be in class and attend the review lectures. He curses a little, and sometimes says things that are a little problematic, but overall the class is interesting.
Great class with an even better professor. Notes arent posted online so copy every word he says. Tests are very difficult but they cover all the things he lectures on. Only material graded for the class Are 3 tests
Lectures are the best, shares good stories to make you understand. Hilarious professor and makes the time fly. Tests are no joke. Dont mistake his personality as easy, the testes were the most challenging tests I have taken in my life. Studies a solid 3 days in advance. Have to go to discussion classes to pass.
honestly dont take his class. he is so hot and you can tell hes passionate about the material but (he will even tell you this) HIS TESTS ARE BRUTALLY HARD. your whole grade is your test grades added up out of 300 and he converts that to letter gpa. I struggled to get a D+ and i was an A+ student before that. cool guy, but he will screw your gpa bad
Very difficult class. We were suppose to have three tests but he decided we had time for two so we had a test the day after spring break, and a final during finals week which was 100 questions and was the hardest test I have ever take. He is very funny, and has good lectures, but his tests are unreasonably hard. You must do all readings to pass,
Only had two tests which made up 100 percent of our scores. They were the two hardest tests I have ever taken. I did all the readings, went to every lecture, and discussion and horribly failed the exams. The final was 100 with material that we learned two months in advance until the end. I would not take this course especially since its only a 200
Justin is a great professor! He is definitely passionate about the material, but you have to listen carefully to what he says in the lecture because he does not post the slides he uses in class online. Your grade is only based off of the three tests you take in the class. Going to the discussion helps a lot!
Pickett is extremely passionate about teaching, he's super funny and explains concepts well to the class. I loved going to class, but it was very challenging. Your grade is dependent only on 3 exams, which is kind of a make or break for your GPA. Go to lecture and do the readings - you will do well if you put in the effort.
He doesn't post anything on blackboard so if you miss class you're screwed.
By far my favorite professor. He is hilarious and is super engaging. Does not really have lecture slides so you have to pay attention to what he is saying but he repeats the things he wants you to know. Tests are based on readings given (that he does not always discuss in class) and lecture. Really have no complaints. Awesome guy.
Pickett is one of the best professors I ever had. I never skipped a class because he made the lectures super interesting. There is a lot of note taking for only 3 exams the entire semester. There are many extra credit assignments though. You have to attend class and study - it is not an easy class.
Great professor, great guy. Tough class but very engaging. Hands down one of the best classes I've ever taken.
Great guy but flies through content heavy lectures. Suggest reading every case study to pass extremely hard tests as he expects you to read them; thus, he breifly goes over them. Attendance isn't taken but strongly advised as his powerpoints have fill in the blanks. Your grade in the class is only based on three tests.
Pickett was easily the most hilarious professor I've ever had. And, he was also a NORMAL person; you know, the kind of guy that if you were to ask him to go to the bathroom he'd say "yes" not "I don't know, can you?" like a bunch of other eccentric professors at this school. DO NOT MISS LECTURE! The entire class grade is based off of 3 exams.
Dr. Pickett's lectures are very content heavy and informative. You definitely need to attend every lecture in order to receive a high grade on his tests. If you miss class, make sure you either get notes from someone else or you read the textbook to catch up. He has three tests and a final so make sure you study intensively for them.
Really glad i took his class. he makes lecture worth going to but he does make you work for your grade, strictly 3 tests only but if you read and put in the work you will do well. he uses really good examples to get theories and ideas across 10/10 recommend his classes!
He's really great overall. Hiss lectures are essential you go to. Take good notes and read the readings and you'll be fine!
One of the BEST professors Ive ever had. He covers extremely fascinating topics in a very engaging way. Hes very intelligent and backs up everything he says with evidence, experiments, and studies. Lecture notes are definitely mandatory to pass
Absolutely my favorite professor I have had and I can confidently say he will be my favorite professor all the way through college. This class was the only class that I was upset to leave since I wanted to keep listening to him lecture. You have to study and read or you're screwed, but do that and this class is very easy. Again, the best professor.
He is one of the best professors you will ever have but his class is so hard you really have to bust ur ass. Bring your laptop and type literally word for word everything he says ask him if you can record his lectures to refer back, thats how I passed. You HAVE to go to class he doesnt post slides, do the readings theres some test questions on them
Do not take if you are not interested in criminology and such. However, if you do not go to the lectures you will 100% fail. Lectures are gone through fast with a ton of information to take notes on. The mandatory discussion class is very very helpful. Study lecture notes and discussion notes and you will be more then fine! also Justin is the best
Professor Pickett is one of the funniest professors you will ever have. His lectures are amazing, make sure you write fast though as he goes really fast. His humor and wit make going to class worth it. He does not post slides (which is fine since I loved going to class) and youll be graded on 3 tests (33% each). Make sure to do the readings too
Pickett is an awesome professor but you have to go to the lectures or you will not pass. His tests are pretty challenging so make sure you study and read the textbook. His only grades are based on 3 test so make sure you STUDY. His lectures are awesome though and his T.A. are really good especially Nathaniel!
Great teacher and funny guy. Doesn't care if you skip class but if you do, you will have a hard time. If you dont study you definitely won't pass, tests require a lot of memorization and understanding of theories. Go to the lectures, do the readings and take notes because some stuff on tests are only in the lectures or only in the textbook.
You have to go to lectures on asynchronous to pass. The class is graded on 3 tests 33% each. It's horrible. The tests are 50 questions and 50 minutes. I took it ascychronous and it was so bad. Make sure you go to the lectures.
Tests are hard, you need a lot of studying to do well. Must watch lectures and take very good notes to pass test.
His lectures can be long, but he makes them interesting. You only have 3 grades and it's 3 tests. It says you need a textbook but I never read it and I got an A. Just make sure you take good notes in class and do the practice tests and you'll do fine.
His class is based on 3 tests and that's it. his lectures are very long and get boring. Get ready to study his tests are on a lot of material.
Only three exams determine your overall grade. No extra credit even if asked since your final grade is determined solely on the three exams. Lectures are very long and it is very important to take notes !!!! Attend every lecture if you want to pass and STUDY!
took crim first sem freshman year and it definitely is difficult and yes, your grade is solely based on 3 exams. he doesn't post his lectures or slides online so you really do need to go to lecture but regardless of your interest in criminology he makes class so interesting and hes truly hilarious, his personality makes up for the difficulty
criminorlogy is great but choose a different professor if you actually want to learn and grow a passion for the subject but if stress and constant anxiety of failure is something you enjoy then this is the perfect class for you .. lol
Very test heavy, 3 tests make up 75% of your grade. Most of the material for the test is based on stuff he said so listen closely.
A blunt, knowledgeable, and all-around great professor
I loved Justin! His class was really fun and interesting. Attendance isn’t mandatory, but beware there’s only 3 tests that you are graded for so I recommend going as much as you can. Lots of theories, but it’s pretty straightforward.
Very enjoyable lectures. I took this class online asynchronous during fall of 2020. Has lots of interesting life experience and stories. Class is straight forward. Just watch or attend the lectures and you will do good.
There are no other assignments for this class and you only get graded based on three tests. It may seem difficult, but as long as you do the readings and go to class, you'll do fine. Dr. Pickett is hilarious and a great professor overall. He doesn't post his lecture slides, but the material we cover is also in the required readings.
Does not upload powerpoints to blackboard, and puts little-to-no information on the slides themselves.
The professor himself is great, very entertaining lectures. I only went to 3 lectures, never went to the friday discussion, didn't read the textbook. Passed by memorizing the study guides before each test. Grade is only based on 3 exams.
Professor Pickett is absolutely amazing, he is very funny and makes lectures fun and engaging. He does as much as he can to help your grade and he cares about his students. There is quite a bit of reading material but it is interesting and informative.
The class is tough and content-heavy, but Pickett is such a funny dude it's hard not to laugh during the lectures. Everything he teaches you you'll retain because he's a great teacher. He's very approachable and talks about his life outside of class, and trust me it gets super funny. Tough class but the professor makes it worth it. 10/10
The lectures were funny and entertaining. Except he talks really fast and is hard to understand sometimes. There are only 3 tests so if you don't do good on them you will fail. But he was a great professor, just be able to type/write fast.
def not a traditional class setup BUT he's really good at teaching and is clear on what's gonna be on the exams (which are the only thing you're graded on). YOU WILL FAIL if you do not go to almost every class. sucks but its how it is bc you only have your notes and the readings. he's very passionate and super funny. only class I looked forward to.
Love Professor Pickett as a person- he is a very real and entertaining lecturer. But the tests- very difficult. If you don't do the readings you will not do well on the tests. If you skip class and miss notes, you will not do well on the tests. Your entire grade is based on 3 exam grades. He does offer extra credit he won't tell you when.
His class was difficult, but definitely doable. Just go to class, take good notes, and use the study materials the TAs give you. I didn't do any of the readings but still managed an A. Lectures were interesting and he repeats things multiple times which is good for notes.
He gives great lectures that make it interesting to learn, but falling out of the loop by a day can set you back as he just lectures the hour and then leaves. Tests were tough and one bad grade on them can make your grade slip, but Pickett is a good guy who makes the class more interesting than many other classes.
Justin Pickett is a great guy, his classes are straightforward and easy to pass - Attend classes since tests would be mainly based on the lectures - Learn to write or type fast since he goes by fast (he would go back to the previous slide if asked) - He would repeat some things twice and that is important to jot down
As a person, he is very nice and funny. As a professor, he's tough. You get graded on only 3 exams. You can't miss a reading nor a class cause you WILL fail. The only reason I passed was because of the extra credit but he doesn't announce when it is.. just be in class. The tests are very hard and as a 200 level class it was way too difficult.
his tests are so hard!!!!!!!!!!!!! you will fail the first test
He states at the beginning of every semester that he PURPOSELY makes the exams ungodly hard because of the students that don't show up to lectures or discussions. As a student that is not the best exam taker, I feel that as a professor you should focus on the students that actually show up for class and not take it out on the ones who do show up.
He is an excellent professor, goes through a lot of material in the lectures and the tests are based on the material covered during the lectures, and he doesn't post the PowerPoint. You have to take notes if you want to pass the test. Tests are challenging but if you pay attention you will get an A. Online chapter readings and quizzes.
THE BEST CRJ PROF EVER.A caring professor that will hype you up.I recommend going to ALL THE CLASSES. Don't let the other reviews fool you. He is not an evil gremlin. He will tell you many fun stories about his life. He is passionate (he talks very loud so you can't miss it) He will repeat things ( talks fast).HE is fantastic- take him and study!
Justin's class is hard I won't get you wrong, but the content is amazing. You are only graded on two exams (the midterm and the final) which is kind of daunting. However, you must show up to lectures and do the readings to pass! While attendance is not mandatory he chose random classes to take attendance for extra credit so go to class!
Amazing professor, he explains everything throughly. If you do not attend class you will fail. If you don't pay attention while attending class you will also fail. There are no assignments, just the mid term and final. He gives 5 points randomly throughout the semester for attendance so please do not skip this class.
I really had an issue with the grading in this class. He only graded on 2 exams and gave 20 attendance points. He spent the whole class yelling information and he moved really fast. I really found it difficult to do well on the tests because I am not a great test taker. I really think he should grade on more things not just the exams.
Okay, so I took this class during freshman year. The one thing I would tell myself to do if I could... READ AND STUDY EACH NOTE AFTER CLASS (even if it's for an hour). Also, attendance isn't mandatory, but I would say go because he does give extra credit once in a while, which LITERALLY HELPED ME.
Worse class I have taken since I enrolled at SUNY. Stay away from this professor. The lectures were just him rambling about how wonderful he is.
I took his class my first semester in college. only 2 grades in the whole class. got a 84 on his midterm then a 97 on the final. attendance isn't required but he will randomly take attendance and if you are there that day you will get 5 points extra credit. he does that about 4 times the whole semester. the extra credit helped me finish with an A
Lectures are long and he talks super fast, so learn to type super fast. only graded on 2 exams. attendance not required but will randomly give extra credit. i studied 2 weeks before each exam and finished with an A. class is super hard tbh but the material is so interesting so it's worth it.
Professor Pickett's class is challenging, but engaging. His lectures are interesting, but you have to stay on top of the readings and attendance to do well. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep - highly recommend using it alongside the course materials.
This is the most interesting class you will take, but the most difficult exams you will take. Justin Pickett is entertaining and you'd be stumped to find someone who does a better lecture. This class was graded on TWO exams alone. They are fairly difficult exams but absolutely manageable if you get good lecture notes. YOU CANNOT MISS A LECTURE.
Important to attend lectures, read all articles provided, and attend discussion courses. Sometimes unhinged with comments but overall funny guy and funny stories. TA's are super chill.
good guy, interesting lectures (not posted online), graded on 3 tests (class average is like 60-70). no other work or points besides random attendance for 5 points each. tests were so difficult that I had to s/u the class. if ur not really, really, really good at tests then do not take this class.
Yo hes funny as hell, class is interesting and he definitely knows how to keep you engaged. GO TO CLASS, its not many tests but there definitely are some tricky topics, just go to class and take notes and STUDY.
You have to write down every single word he says during lectures because it will ALL be on the exams. There are three exams that are worth your entire grade for the semester. There is no attendance however, on 3 random days without notice he will hand out a piece of paper and have you write down your name for attendance credit.
his tests are genuinely the hardest i've taken by far. study EVERYTHING. attendance isn't mandatory but no lectures posted online so unless yk someone in the class, don't skip. at all. he's an awesome prof tho: funny, entertaining, actually gets you intrigued.
I really enjoyed this class, he made the lectures very interesting every week. You definitely can't skip this class and get a good grade, most things on the test are from the lectures, which aren't posted on Brightspace, and very few questions are from the readings. His tests are pretty difficult, but not impossible if you take good notes.
Prof Pickett himself is hilarious and very understanding. His lectures are fast-paced and not available on Brightspace, so go to class and take a lot of notes. Attendance is crucial for this course. If you miss a class, be sure to get notes from a classmate, or your grade will take a hit. Only graded by 3 exams.
