Great professor. The class is interesting and he makes it quite enjoyable. I highly recommend him.
Justin made Geology better than expected and he's a really "hip," interesting Prof. His study sessions made the mid-term and final much easier and his assigned projects caused us to think more about the topic.
very easy and interesting class! His review sessions for his exams made them very easy, and assignments were interesting and easy as well. All around easy class...higly recommended!
Fun guy, easy to relate to, not stuffy at all. He does the impossible by making geology bearable. Believe it or not.
This is the best general class I've ever taken! During the first day of class, the prof said it all clearly, and set a tone for the class: Don't bother cheating on exams.. Let's face it, this class is easy, so there's no point. Quote from TA: Come here, get a B. Think, get an A.
The best general class EVER. Justin knows everyone's taking it because it's a gen, but he knows how to make geology interesting and relatively painless. He's also a big movie geek, which makes the class fun. And, to top it all off, he's cute too. ;)
Funny, shows good movie clips, easy to learn from and the class is a breeze - this is definetly the easiest geology class at this school.
Justin makes this class rock. It's greatly entertaining. He's the funniest professor I've ever had. Funny quotes include, "If you could smell it, it would smell like death," and "You could eat a lava lamp if you had too." Take this class!
Makes the class lots of fun. Why would you ever take regular geology?
I came for the movies, stayed for the great jokes and one-liners. Justin has managed to make geology fun, can geology be fun?, while still be educational and informative. Would seriously consider other classes taught by him.
Really nice! Sweet Midwest accent!
i've never found rocks so stimulating before. geology and cinema is a sweet class. highly recommended!
Awesome class. I learned a lot and had fun doing it.
So cool! VERY NICE AND HILARIOUS!
not interest in Geology, but I actually liked going to this lecture, it was fun and Justin was funny and clearly taught everything.
This was the only science class I really had any interest in taking, and Justin did not disappoint. His lectures are hilarious, I was actually mad when I got sick and couldn't go. He really tries to make everything fun and interesting.
Awesome Professor!! Knows that most of the students are taking the class for a requirement and that they don't like Science. So, he makes the subject interesting and fun! He has a great sense of humor to go along!
Justin is awesome. He's funny and bad ass. Lab sucks, so if you've done the lab requirement take the other section. The quizzes are easy because the study guide has all the questions that might appear. Presentations are super fun! He lets you make videos if you want!
Perfect class for anyone who isn't interested in science and is willing to memorize the answers to the quizzes in order to get an A. Labs are boring but usually take less than an hour. All lecture notes are posted online so you really never have to go.
He is a nice funny guy who is easy to talk to and pretty reasonable with grades. But he becomes a hard ass at times. Also the labs are completely useless
Justin is a wonderful professor. He is very helpful and explains the material very well. He also has a great sense of humor and tries to make the class entertaining. I would definitely recommend taking him.
Seriously, this is the science class of the non-science kids like myself. Justin was hilarious, and even though the labs were about as interesting as watching grass grow, the lectures were great. You watch about 5-7 movies in a semester, and the projects at the end of the semester are really creative & fun. Definitely reccomend!
Terrible. Funny only to the mentally retarded fratboys who populate this terrible class. Vague, simplistic, I didn't learn anything and the movies sucked. If you like imagining yourself in a stereotypically "kooky" college class room where slackers laugh at Austin Powers quotes, this is the place for you. I hate this class.
Justin is very funny if you like sarcasm... the lecture material is pretty boring but you dont really need to go and he makes it semi interesting just bc he is sarcastic labs are stupid and pointless but if you really dont enjoy science that much i would recommend it most of the quiz questions come from the practice quizzes he gives out
Justin is a very funny guy if you can handle sarcasm. Geology is a very boring subject but he does a pretty good job keeping you interested, although it seemed like he began to be sick of the class toward the end of the semester. Overall, it's a pretty easy class and he's a pretty good teacher
Good class for students who are just looking to fulfill their physical science requirement. I found Prof. Revenaugh funny at first, but his humor is based on making fun of others and he doesn't know when he's taken things too far. Movie script assignment was tougher than expected. Would never take him again. Glad I have the class over with.
One of my favorite classes so far. Justin is a great teacher and knows how to keep non-science students interested. Lectures can get a little boring but they are posted online so attendance isn't mandatory. Quizzes are extremely easy if you study and do the practice quizzes. Great class overall. Labs are somewhat interesting and manageable.
The subject matter isn't terribly interesting, but Justin tries to make class enjoyable and he offers plenty of opportunities to succeed. Plus, he has a great sense of humor.
Justin was very interesting, considering the subject really wasn't. He was also very good at giving extra credit on days where half the lecture ditched. Overall, I learned a lot.
dont buy the textbook. do all the practice quizzes online, the tests are harder than you think. don't mess up your final script, and take the lab- it'll save your grade. he's cool if you can handle his constant sarcasm, but the movies you watch are horrible.
Though this class was supposed to be easy, the tests were definitely much harder than I thought they'd be. He takes a lot of questions from the practice tests though which is kind of helpful. He does give plenty of extra credit opportunities but you do need to study for this class. Recommended class, but VERY glad it's over.
I never studied for this class and got a B. I took it as a SN(Pass or Fail). He showed lots of funny movies and crack jokes. The lab is way too hard than lectures. Just make sure you study for lab before attending sections.
He was really dynamic in presenting geology in a way that students who were taking the class for lib eds could learn something. The labs were easy. The tests were surprisingly trickier, but he takes a lot of questions from the practice tests, so definitely take advantage of those. Overall, a fun class about a subject I don't really care for.
Extremely interesting class and professor.
He's hilarious. His lectures are pretty easy to follow and some of the test questions are straight off the practice quiz. If I was better at math I'd change my major so I could take more of his classes.
Justin is a great professor. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities for attendance and quizzes. Very funny guy that likes to crack jokes that college kids enjoy. I would recommend him and this course to a friend.
Great Professor! Has an awesome sense of humor and loves to poke fun at Geology! Tests are a bit tricky but he offers plenty of Extra credit so make sure to take advantage of those. Labs aren't difficult but make sure to go to class since attendance is mandatory.
Justin knows that students take 1005 just to fulfill their lib ed. He offers a lot of extra credit when the class collectively doesn't do well, and he tries to keep lectures interesting. He can go on about convergent boundaries forever, though. Textbook isn't required and he tells you that the first day of class. Lab is easy depending on the TA.
Justin is an excellent professor and knows that the majority of his geology/cinema students are non-science majors. Thus he made sure the course content was interesting by offering a movie script assignment, showing a few movies in class, and having fun labs. The extra credit opportunities are what save most of the student. Overall, awesome class!
He is cool but sometimes he is too bored too teach properly.
Makes class very entertaining. He doesn't take himself or the course too seriously because most students take it to fulfill lib eds. Tests and quizzes are harder than expected, but only because the rest of the class is so incredibly easy. He offers practice tests that have some of the same questions as the real test. Good about EC to keep grades up
Probably the best science class available for the lib-ed requirement. Justin shows movies & has a movie script assignment to incorporate class material. He's super funny & chill & tells great stories - makes class entertaining & offers tons of extra credit. But he goes through lectures quick & I felt like I was memorizing & reiterating information.
I thought he was really funny, which made going to a Geology class as an English major less painful. No homework or required reading but the tests can be hard.
Down to earth. Greatest way to fulfill my physical science requirement.
Easiest class and a great professor. He understands that everyone there is trying to fulfill their lib ed requirement. His quizzes are a bit challenging, but he offers a lot of extra credit in order to raise the average. If you do the extra credit and study off of his powerpoint slides then you will be just fine.
Posts practice quizzes which are really helpful. Shows entertaining video clips in class to which makes the lectures a little less boring.
He is a great professor. He understand the students and he offered extra credit for us. His lecture is kinda fun. The tests are not so hard if you go to the lecture and study the material.
He has the best "dad jokes" and gives extra credit when test scores are not up to his standards. Do the practice quizzes and you'll do well on the tests.
By far my favorite class in the ESCI department. Justin is funny, approachable, and makes long derivations bearable. He makes his homeworks quite fun, as well. Highly, highly recommend taking a class with him.
Great professor! He made it a fun class.
Super funny professor! I would definitely take this class again!
He was a great professor and made the lectures fun to listen to. I would definitely recommend him. If people do poorly on a quiz, he gives an extra credit option right after, also if you attend class he gives you an attendance code to enter and you get more free points. Definitely take A-F it is such an easy GPA booster.
Justin is hilarious! His commentary during the movies is the best part of the class! Everything is pretty easy, and designed to fulfill the Lib Ed requirements. Labs were simple, and lectures were very clear. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Show up to lecture, take some notes, study the practice quizzes, and you'll pass the class, no problem.
His lectures are fun. He'll give extra credits to his students. Very HELPFUL. Expect group work for lab. Seriously, just do all of the lab's extra credit. A good course to fulfill lib ed.
Most reviews say Justin's class is super easy but they're not true. Justin is definitely a cool and funny professor but his exams are super hard and the labs are difficult too. Do NOT expect an easy "A" in this course. Not an easy Lib Ed
I love this professor but I totally regret focusing on the textbook so much. For the first half of the semester I killed myself studying with the book, when I should have just learned his lecture slides well. The labs are hard at first (especially rock identifying) but it seems to be getting easier. Go to lecture, man. It will help.
Justin is super funny! The lectures can get dry at times, but he normally tries to make them entertaining with video clips and such. I suggest going to class because he will sometimes give out a password for an extra credit quiz. You do have to study a little, but you really only need to look over the lecture slides and practice quiz.
Justin is so funny. The only thing I would say is that the quizzes are surprisingly harder than what you'd think.
The class isn't hard. The problem I have is that the course description heavily emphasizes movies. When we had movie lectures, he heavily edited several of the movies and would set the movie speed so that the movies were really irritating to watch. The syllabus even indicates that several movies would be split over 2 sessions- nope that was a lie.
Justin is a great professor. His class was not hard if you take notes during class, and study before the quizzes. He offers a ton of extra credit, so you have to try hard not to get an "A". Justin is funny, making this an easy lecture to sit through. Overall, a very easy class.
Easy class. Stay awake through the movies and attend the lectures following the quizzes to get the extra credit passwords. Kind of a lot of quizzes but the lowest one gets dropped and he gives a lot of extra credit. You'll have to try to get anything lower than an A.
Basically same lectures with ESCI 1005, but just without labs in ESCI 1105 (so only graded by quizzes). The quizzes are harder than you expect but they get easier and the professor gives you tons of extra points. I recommend you to go to lectures because he sometimes gives you a password to an extra credit quiz.
great professor. funny, explins the material well, gives out a ton of extra credit. quizzes are easy if you attend lectures or review the slides before the test.
Probably the best professor I had this year. you dont need to put in effort if you want to pass, but if you put in even a little bit of effort and do all his extra credit, it wont be hard to get an A. He kept lectures extremely funny and entertaining. If youre looking to get Physical Sci out of the way with best GPA, this is the class for you.
Justin was the funniest professor of my semester. His lectures are interesting and you should really go if you want to understand what's going on in class. The quizzes, however, can be quite tricky if geology/earth science isn't your thing. Only took the class for the lib-ed, but Justin is a seriously funny guy. EC quizzes for attendance too!
The few lectures I actually went to were great! Quizzes are super easy if you study a little bit the night before even if you don't go to lecture or read the book. I had literally zero idea about what was going on in the lab all semester, but did fine in it anyways because the TAs are super easy graders and there is a curve. take it for the libed!!
Should be clear, but don't buy book, no need. No extra credit for last quiz since 1 is dropped. Attend lectures for random extra credit. Class & Prof deserve its reputation as best lib ed to get Environment Physical & Sciences w lab done.
Took Revenaugh for Geology and Cinema as a lib ed and it was a great time. Easy class, show up and enjoy the movies and take practice quizzes before the actual quizzes and you'll do fine. He always gives tons of extra credit
Justin is a really great professor and a super smart guy. Rocks can be boring but his dad humor makes lecture more engaging. I actually learned so much from this course and would highly recommend it to everyone. This class is a guaranteed A if you are willing to put time into studying his lecture slides online.
Justin is a wonderful professor. The content can be very dry especially if its something you are not interested in. Didn't go to class but always reviewed the slides. The exams are pretty tough so study for them!! He also gives extra credit so make sure you do it!
If you have the opportunity to take one of Justins classes, DO IT! Its a great way to fulfill the physical science w lab requirement for CLA. The subject matter may seem boring but his lectures absolutely are not. He has a great sense of humor. Theres also plenty of extra credit offered and all of his lecture notes are online.
Great lecturer, MIT grad so he really knows his stuff. Makes a lot of jokes which keep lecture entertaining. Class is extremely easy, you can skip every lecture and still get a B.
Best lib ed class ever. Justin makes geology pretty interesting, surprisingly enough. I got such a good grade; he drops an exam and a quiz score and offers lots of extra credit. He's really funny, too. Tip: do the practice exam, look over your notes, do the practice exam again, then take the online exam. A+ every time. (he reuses questions haha)
I am NOT a science person at all, I am a Spanish major at the U. I took this class to get my physical science credit out of the way and it actually was one of my favorite classes. The content can be boring but Justin keeps it entertaining. His grading criteria is very clear and offers SO much extra credit. Take this class!
Justin Revenaugh is a cool guy and a good teacher. DO NOT get the textbook for him- not needed. Going to class will make his lecture slides easier to understand, but missing a couple is fine. He does offer a lot of extra credit- sometimes only for those in-class, so try to be there. He taught well and it should be a relatively easy A. Funny guy!
Taking the Geology course without a lab and it's easy. There is a textbook for about $8 but you don't need it at all. There is a discussion website you need to spend $25 to use that is for homework. I do recommend that you go to lectures each time b/c extra credit is randomly given out there. All (about 4 exams + final) are online and proctored.
Justin is hilarious and the class is very easy! DONT buy the textbook and if you are taking S/N for lib ed, don't even bother spending the $25 for access to the online homework. It's worth barely anything. The lab was easy, lectures were funny. Attendance non-mandatory but he gives out Xtra credit in class and hes a funny guy so not the worst idea.
Justin was an amazing professor. He cares so much about his students and their success! He is very accommodating and flexible and loves to crack jokes. Would highly highly recommend taking this course with him.
Justin is an amazing professor! I'm not a person who's into science that much, but he made science fun and understandable. Even though the lectures are heavy, but if you focus on what he is saying, you'll understand and it's actually not that bad. However, since the lab is operated by a different person, the lab was pretty challenging.
Justin is such a great professor! Took this as my lib ed requirement and was worried, but as long as you take good notes you should do fine. Lots of extra credit opportunities and exams were pretty similar to the practice exams he gives out a few days before.
It's easy. I know that's what you are wondering right now, so I got that out of the way. BUT here's the thing. We may say "it's easy" but YOU LEARN. And the fact that YOU LEARNED SOMETHING made it seem easy. You don't sit and memorizeyou APPLY. Saying it's easy doesn't make it any less important or valuable. Especially good for non-Science majors.
The worst class I have ever taken. For over half of the assignments and labs you have nowhere to look other than google which is not helpful at all. Justin isn't accommodating at all and acts like this class is the most important one you are taking. I have fallen behind in my major classes due to the stress, anxiety, and time I have put into it.
I waited to take my physical science as a junior specifically to take this class. Unfortunately, it is way more work than I want it to be and it's difficult to find time to care about with mounting pressure in my major classes. It isn't hard but it requires a lot more effort than I expected and the labs can be frustratingly long and difficult.
he had an option to write a movie script as the final, which was really nice as a person who isn't great at science. his lectures were interesting too. the movies were all bad lol.
If you're looking for a fun class or an easy A, don't take his class. He has tons of lectures you need to watch that it's overwhelming for a 3 credit class. Honestly, it feels like a 4 credit class. He's also not very sympathetic either regarding technology and the pandemic. His exams/quizzes have hilarious answers though, which I liked.
Justin is a great guy. I see a lot of other comments complaining that this was unnecessarily hard and Justin was unaccommodating and that is just not true. The class has prerecorded lectures so just put them on 2x speed and your fine. The tests are open notes and have questions directly from the practice exam. So don't be dumb and you'll get an A.
This class is just ok. Professor Revenaugh is not very interesting and I found my interactions over email with him to be rude. The class has a lot of busywork and some of the tests and labs are unnecessarily difficult.
I took lecture only, but I really enjoyed Geology and Cinema as a fun class outside my major classes. He is humorous and wants you to succeed. The movie watch parties were the best part of the class by far. He also offers extra credit which made the difference from an A- to an A. There are a lot of lectures, but you can use your notes on the exam.
Great guy, cool class.
Amazing professor, take good notes on the lectures and what he is saying and it is an easy A, you learn a lot, and he actually makes class fun with jokes, games, and cool videos about the earth. it is very lecture heavy. also, the practice exam is a good tool to test how prepared you are for the exam
As a freshman here in my first semester, I couldn't have asked for a better professor than Justin. The grading and expectations are clearly explained, and the course material is totally manageable if you put in some study time outside of class. Justin clearly cares about his students and their success inside and outside the classroom.
Justin is a nice guy, and he offers easy extra credit opportunities if the class exam average gets below like an 89%. Plus, he drops your lowest exam score so if you have a good grade you don't even have to take the final. Easy class! Some of the lectures are a little boring, but I enjoyed most of them. This was my favorite class this semester.
Took class for the science credit: highly recommend for that purpose. Prof makes effort to be entertaining and wants everyone to pass. Lowest exam grade dropped, offers extra credit if needed, exams online, open note. Genuinely looked forward to class, though I wasn't super interested in content. (I took lab online: recommend, just did worksheets)
Lectures were simulcast and available afterward. The lectures were hilarious and engaging. He would include kahoots and jeopardy in the lecture. No traditional final, there are 6 exams, 5 are unit specific and the 6th was comprehensive, he drops the lowest exam grade as well. The material was well taught and he made is easy to learn.
Super easy. Take this course from him, especially if you are not a science major and just need the class as a general. Very clear PowerPoints so if you dont want to go to lecture just watch the recordings or read the PowerPoints and youll be good. No textbook readings. He tried to make class fun with Kahoot and movie clips.
He's super knowledgeable on the topic and it's clear that he's passionate about it. He makes the lectures entertaining and funny by adding in games like Kahoot and Jeopardy (and gives out prizes for winning). Tests every few weeks and a 10 pt quiz every week. The lowest test score gets dropped and the 2 lowest quizzes get dropped. HIGHLY recommend.
Geology and the Cinema is such a good lib ed for a physical science. I had a super good lab TA and my lab group was fun so that helped for sure. The labs are usually less than an hour long and easy to get 100 on. The class is pretty easy with minimal homework and Justin is so so kind and loves what he teaches so much! Can't reccomend more!
You play kahoot almost every class, top tier teacher, 100% recommend. Very fun and easy labs too
Take this class for the physical science requirement. Super easy and you actually learn cool things. He is super nice and makes dad jokes. Everything is open-note, plus online quizlets. He is one of my top professors and made going to his class tons of fun. Only 10-20 min of homework a week. He drops your worst graded assignments and tests.
I loved his class the tests were not hard at all its exactly like the lecture and movies we watch. The labs were easy 100 points. The final was also optional and we had an extra credit lab that was soooo easy and we usually did kahoot's and he would give prizes he is truly the best professor he is so nice and so caring and understanding.
Prof. Revenaugh easily made geology and cinema my favorite class this semester. Every class he would do a quizlet and give a prize out to the winner. Attendance wasn't mandatory since you could attend in person, online or watch the lecture later. There is a weekly open note current events quiz and then 5 exams with the 6th being the final.
Justin is a good teacher, given I've never actually talked to him or even seen him face-to-face. I signed up for the in-person but he changed it to optional and we could watch the livestream. His lectures are really long but great cause he adds in movie clips and Kahoots. Lots of tests (6, I believe) but open note, book, Internet, all. Great guy!
Easy physical science lib ed, labs were easy and we often finished early, lectures and movies were interesting, weekly quizzes were easy and open note, same with the 6 exams, you get to drop 2 labs, 1 exam (which can be the final), and 2 weekly quizzes. Take this class with Justin if you can!!!
Justin is the best prof for ESCI 1001! He's always excited to see everyone and clarify any confusions. I learned so many helpful environmental stuff. His lectures and videos were fun, take lots of notes for the open notes exams. Syllabus was clear, lowest assignment and exam gets dropped, extra credit chances, Sydney was the best lab TA!
100% recommend taking Geology and Cinema with Justin Revenaugh. Canvas was very organized. I never needed to question when or if something was due. The movies/ movie clips were very entertaining as well as the lectures. As long as you show up to class or go on zoom (which I did) and take good notes you will pass.
Everything you could want in a professor!
I don't have anything bad to say about Justin. I rarely write reviews on here, Justin's class is a great option for whatever reason you may need to take this class. Very enjoyable and clear to follow and be successful.
He is such a nice guy and the movie clips are so fun! Definitely take this class with Justin! Easy and fun :)
took him for my physical sciences credit, i hate science but LOVED him. he is so chill and a really nice guy 10/10
Great class, Great professor, Great movies. This class was fairly simple along with the labs (each lab was about an hour or less long). There are exams every 3 ish weeks but are online. Lowest Lab, current events quiz, AND exam dropped! Justin cares about his students, plays Kahoots in class often, and cracks jokes throughout the lectures.
Great and funny professor and is very thoughtful
Justin was a blast. The movies are such a fun addition, & you can easily get through the class without paying attention once. He includes kahoots for test review & always has jokes/engaging aspects of lectures if you choose to attend. The lectures are available online and in-person and the tests are every 2 weeks with weekly current event quizzes.
Loved this professor. Genuinely cared
Took this class for the summer, and he was the best instructor. The lectures were fun, and the class was graded based on a few things (quizzes and exams).
One of my all time favorite professors!!
Justin was an amazing professor, his lectures were very interesting and I enjoyed showing up to lecture everyday even though you can watch them over zoom. All tests were online and of the 5 over the semester your worst score dropped.
Fun professor, chill vibe. Easy class with open-note exams, movies, and Kahoots. Helpful Unstuck AI saved me time prepping. Definitely take this if you need a science credit!
All lectures were available on zoom and were recorded. Very nice and understanding.
Took as a libed, didn't enjoy the material but Justin did an amazing job lecturing and could tell he cared about his content. The lab's are the killer in this class, do all the extra credit for the lab grade. The exams were all open note and take home, so very easy to do well. Cares about his students succeeding and would 100% recommend for a libed
[fall 2024] Easy course, everything is open note and attendance isn't mandatory. I skipped plenty but not because of Justin, he's a great lecturer and clearly very passionate about his field. The lab is the only somewhat difficult part, make sure you prepare ahead of each lab and use the extra credit opportunities. One of my favorite professors :-)
Professor Revenaugh was a very good teacher. His lectures were informative and comprehensive, and the difficulty was very well-balanced across the semester. Most of the expression of knowledge was through multiple choice quizzes, but they were informative and effective as a whole.
Justin is the best. His lectures are interesting and engaging, and he sets you up for success really well. You do have to take notes, a lot of the information isn't on the slides, but it's an easy class to pay attention in. The lab is really easy. I would take another one of Justin's classes in a heartbeat.
I hate science but this class wasn't bad! Justin was very understanding overall and structured the class so that you could choose how much you engaged with it, since a test, quiz, and lab were dropped and there was always a Zoom link for the lectures. I would definitely recommend this class with him as an easy physical science lib ed!
Very easy class to get through. Everything was online. Labs were a little annoying at times, but definitely worth it because they're easier than every other geology and science class.
