Okay teacher. He knows his stuff, but doesn't seem to excited to teach. Lectures had a lot of information, but were not very appealing. No homework. 3 tests. fair grader.
he has a very monotone voice that can lull you to sleep. overall his tests were very general which is good. took attendance with the iclicker. wasn't bad but wasn't very good either.
He doesn't add unnecessary fluff to his lectures which is good. It's a very structured class. I just hoped he'd interact more with his students. We don't know much about him.
Real monotone dude, not very enthusiastic. Lectures weren't too hard I guess if you paid a lot of attention but they are also posted online so I just reviewed all of them before the exams. Attendance taken via iClicker questions, you get points for showing up even if you answer wrong.
Really easy class. His schedule is very structured and exams are open notes. He is very understanding and helpful. Great professor. The only downfall is that his class can get a bit boring.
Very clear and structered lectures. Tests are open notes and multiple choice. Easy to pass, found his lessons interesting and focuses on main points.
He is a really cool and nice teacher. His Bio 171 class is taught with powerpoints that he posts on laulima. Only things covered in the powerpoint are on the tests. Show up to class and get extra credit via iclicker (for 171, no extra credit in 172). If you have any questions, don't be shy, just ask him, he encourages it and is happy to help.
very helpful professor who knows his subject well and knows how to teach it. very handsome and muscular too. heyyyyyyy
His lectures are clear, they are the best thing to study from. IClicker is good for extra points and makes u go to class. He's wonderful to sit and look at though, difficult for your eyes to want to stray that's for sure.
He is a really good professor. He is very clear when speaking and knows his stuff. He is also often available outside of class to help out students. His tests are okay if you study pretty hard. Everything is he tests on is covered in class.
Super easy teacher but if you're looking for a good learning experience, this is not the prof. His lectures are interesting but his delivery isn't all that great, super monotone. Easy A for me, just study his slides and you should be good.
The class is relatively easy. During the lecture he will give you pointers on what you need to know for the exam, so its pretty obvious. You do not need the textbook. AT ALL. if you could somehow get the mastering biology work without the textbook, that is all you need. He is a bit monotone, but you get used to it after a few lectures.
Walguarnery is a good professor. Seems like he's become more interesting this semester compared to the previous one (he is new). Class is fairly simple. A low portion of your grade comes from iclickers (you get pts for right or wrong), another low portion from Msterngbio HW. Exams are fair. No witty wording, just study slides and what he emphasizes
He posts his lectures online so attendance is not mandatory, but it is recommended for extra credit. He doesn't use the book, and relies mainly on his powerpoints, but he does cover a lot of material, so studying frequently is a must. His grading is quite lenient though.
Great professor, uploads slides online. Tries his best to make everything clear yet informative. He understands subjects that might be more difficult for students and makes extra time to explain them.
He walks funny. Class test is SUPER HARD. FML! Seems chill and easygoing. I hope he curves..... :( SADNESSS. I like his iclicker questions bwhhahaha.
His voice is very monotonic, so it's very easy to fall asleep during an early morning lecture even if you've had coffee. At least 8-9 chapters are covered every exam. It's a lot of material, but the tests are not impossible. Most of the questions are based on knowing terms. And Mr.W is a hottie.
Attendance is mandatory if you want to get easy clicker questions. Exam is totally based on his power points and he makes clear exactly what to expect, material on exams are pretty predictable. His curve is generous, a 70 can get you like a B- Only downside is that he's really monotone. Overall easy and very fair professor!
Very structured class, no surprises. Minimal homework due once/week, everything on exam is on the slides. Does a very helpful pre-exam review. Most handsome teacher I've ever had! So handsome I'm intimidated to go up to him, I have a crush on him. You need to study for an A to do well on tests. Recommend.
Great professor. Keeps students attentive and interested.
Homework and iClicker questions are 5% of grade, could make a difference if you're right on the line. Tests are okay averages about an 75% on tests for the class. A little monotone classes can get boring but he is very helpful and if you put in some effort you can get an a. Grading Scale is fair 85% and up is an a
If you took AP Bio like me this is a super easy class & if you read Campbell Biology you don't have to read the book! Grading curve very generous, I think he wants you just to get the main ideas. Know that you will be learning 29 chapters in 14 weeks so it is a lot to soak in. But his ppts are very helpful!
He is very clear and goes over a lot of the more hard to grasp concepts. 2 Midterms and 1 final worth about 25-30% each. All the midterms and finals are NONcumulative and multiple choice. His questions are VERY straightforward. He posts all of his lectures and during lecture he basically reads them word for word. I only attended approx.1/3 of classes.
Super easy if you study his powerpoints, which he posts up online. His questions on the test are straightfoward. He also puts some extra credit questions. And his curve is really good. Should get an A. Didn't use the textbook.
Very helpful. Wants his students to do well. Would definitely take another course from this professor!
He is a good professor. Very sincere about what he is teaching and wants his students to excel. If you attend class and take notes, along with studying for the exams you will pass this class. His grading scale favors the students.
All his exam questions come straight from his powerpoints, so if you study them you should do well, he is very helpful and I would take another class from him.
Extremely straightforward, all the questions on the tests are straight from his powerpoints.
this professor is amazing because 1. he makes biology easier regardless of previous knowledge 2. he wants people to pass 3. easy to talk to if you need help 4. enthusiastic. you would have to try really hard to not pass any class he teaches.
He is an awesome teacher, who really only wants his students to pass. Plus, he's attractive, so it makes going to the lectures easier. I am going to continue to take classes that are taught by him (me being a Marine Biology major)
Only really went to lectures because the teacher is hot, and because the iclicker points. Other than that, all you have to do is study the power points that he posts on laulima.
His tests are super hard despite going to the review and he hints at sections he might ask on the exam. There's just too much information and it's sad to see him cram so much in a short amount of time. His tests are basic terms but then it can get really specific. He's a nice guy overall tho.
There is a lot of information that needs to be covered in this class, but he does a good job at explaining it. He makes sure to stress the things that are important to know for the test and the questions he asks are fair (all from his presentations). Extra plus is that he is a good lecturer, he speaks well and does not simply read off the slides!
There is a lot of information covered in this course so it is very important to study the powerpoints frequently. The tests are pretty straight-forward, but don't wait until the last minute to study. Don't bother buying the textbook. I never used it.
Really great teacher! His lectures can be monotone, but he is very descriptive and stresses the importance of a subject when needed. Test answers come straight from his power point lectures. Tests are fairly easy if you study each lecture thoroughly. My favorite class and teacher so far!
Prof. Walguarnery is awesome. He's really helpful and caring. If you have any questions or concerns, don't be afraid to talk to him. He always does his best to be as helpful and informative as he can. I have taken 3 classes from him and gotten A's in all 3. Just study his powerpoints frequently and you'll have no trouble getting an A.
He's very nice and actually wants you to do well. Tests are kind of hard, but that's biology for you.
He is one of the best professors in Biology at UH-Manoa. Take him, go to class and go to his office hours, I'll assure you, you'll succeed.
I-CLICKER required for class. Straightforward with lecture slides. Few problems with grading of scantron (went in to manually grade exam and got a couple more points). Overall, Prof. is helpful and not too tricky. -will take again
He's one of the best professors I had freshman year at UH Manoa. I definitely recommend him. I really enjoyed his allegories about how Biology is involved in his life.
He has a strong interest in the course material and is very good at explaining things in detail. He is by far one of my favorite teachers I have ever had. I highly recommend him.
He is a great professor who is willing to help students. The grading scale is really awesome, 85% or above is an A, but exams are hard. Study only the powerpoint and go to the tutoring section, it does help.
Bonus points for using iClicker in class but his exams are super hard... He's a good professor but hard to get an A.
Talks from a powerpoint and explains concepts well. However, I found it hard to stay interested sometimes. You need to be really well prepared for the tests as they're somewhat difficult. Good teacher, but I won't be taking him again next semester for Bio 172.
Amazing teacher, truly passionate about this subject. Easy A if you attend class and put in the time. Tests are made directly from powerpoint, grading scale is NICE, and iclicker is extra credit. Justin rocks!
Justin is a great professor! He cares a lot about his students and how well we're doing in his class. His exams are straightforward & easy if you study his power points (his power points were considered his study guides for exams) I am taking his late 172 class next sem but def worth it.plus he is hot :)
Pretty easy class, You can tell that he genuinely cares about all his students. Just make sure you go to class and read the powerpoints and you should be fine.
I took this class awhile ago, but Justin deserves another good review. The lectures were pretty decent (he had a really good guest speaker too). Exams were straightforward and IClickers were good. Let's face it though, we would go to class w/o IClickers just for the eye candy. Most attractive prof EVER
Pretty straightforward class, lots of info covered on the exams but it's all from his powerpoint slides. Grading scale is generous and iClicker points are an easy grade booster. I'd recommend printing the slides to bring to class. Justin is a super nice guy, cares about his students and just wants you to succeed. And he's hot so that's a plus :)
Makes concepts simple. Pwr pts contain everything you need to know. I dont need any other bio credits, but planning to take whatever he teaches just because I like the way he teaches. Exams aren't hard and he offers a couple extra credit opportunities. Definitely reccomend taking him.
This is the second class I've taken with Justin because I liked his teaching style so much. His pp slides are excellent and he is very passionate about his subject. The exams are not super easy, but he prepares the class to do well on them. I highly suggest taking his class. He is also very attractive, which is nice.
Justin was straight forward, good teacher, and easy to talk to for help or clarity. Tests were challenging but fair. I liked this class and he was a great teacher.
Covers what you need to know. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he uses iClicker and explains concepts well.
He's okay, I feel like he just reads off his slides sometimes which is why on normal days only 40% of the class shows up. You have to know the material well because his exams will have a handful of questions that require you to really know your stuff.
Pretty good prof. He just reads off the slides but emphasizes what is important to know on tests. Tests are straightforward multiple choice just read the book. Show up to class for iclicker points.
I took him for three class bio 171, 172, 265, and he was great. Easy to understand and you know what's on the test. He is an expert in his field, and tells you how you can use your degree. Test were all multiple choice. If you study his slides, you will pass. He is open to questions and like to help.
Justin is the greatest teacher. He's very helpful and clear when asking questions and seems really passionate about his field, making his lectures more interesting. Homework is always online and pretty easy. His exams are right off his powerpoints. I'll definitely take him again.
Lectures from powerpoint, where he also gets all of his exam questions. Have taken this professor for three classes and have done well in all. He is passionate and very knowledgeable about the subjects. In intro classes, iclicker is extra credit but then becomes 10% participation grade in other classes. Don't need to buy the text book.
Dr. Walguarnery's class is the best class I've taken yet. His exams are based solely on his powerpoint slides. He does count attendance, though. Oh and he is VERY nice to look at... If that matters.
One needs to try to stay awake during lecture. Interestingly, pronounces reciprocity and diploid wrong. Exams are quite easy, but time and time again he took forever to give back scores. He seems to care little about his students as well.
Dude, Walgs is the best teacher at UH Manoa. He reads off the powerpoint, but then clarifies and emphasizes points that are important. Pay attention to this man, he is really cool outside of class too. Walgs, walgs, walgs, Walgs, walgs, walgs, Walgs, walgs, walgs, Walgs, walgs, walgs, Walgs, walgs, walgs, Walgs, walgs, walgs, Walgs, walgs!
Lectures end 20 minutes early every day. The powerpoint is always online, so you don't even need to go to class. HW is easy if you remember to do it.
Awesome Professor. Has a lot of extra credit opportunities (iClicker). If you show up for 25 or more class days with the iClicker, you'll get 5% extra credit. There was also online assignments. Easy course if you show up and review the power points.
Really great teacher! Cares about the students and their understanding of the material. Posts lecture slides online and tests questions come right from them. No need for the textbook. If you show up for classes you also get extra credit! 100% recommend this teacher.
He is very thorough in his lectures and make sure important ideas are understood. He answers any questions people asks and explains things well. There is a lot of material he covers but thats apart of the class. He lets you make up midterms and is very understanding.
i just graduated from UH last semester, walguarnery is hands down the best teacher i ever had at UH and i wasn't even a bio major. to this day i still laugh about stuff he said in class. and the tests are super easy.
Walgs was the best teacher ive had so far at UH. Dont bother buying the textbook as the test is based solely on his lecture slides which he posts online. 5% extra grade boots (potentially an entire letter) for submitting any answer on iClicker. He's a very engaging, relatable, rad guy. I would recommend him 100%.
Awesome professor. Very helpful and he knows his subject really well. His powerpoints from lectures are very informational and useful. Mid-terms are based on the powerpoint. You need an iclicker. He gives you points for participation. Never felt bored. He loves students asking questions . I recommend you to take him for biology.
Don't get me wrong, Justin is great on the eyes, but he's such a horrible teacher. All he does is read off the slides and then if you ask a question he answers with "We're gonna get to that." His tests are also extremely hard and he doesn't even provide a study guide.
Professor Walguanery is the man! I've never met someone with such extensive knowledge and exceptional ability to explain a topic. Every time he explains one of my questions I am blown away, and find myself wishing I might be as smart as him about something one day. I highly recommend this course for those passionate about Biology.
For bio171, I've never used the assigned book. But then again, maybe that's why I failed. You need an iClicker for the class but you don't necessarily have to attend because he just goes off his slides. He is very knowledgeable about the subject, its very inspiring. You can't fail if you pay attention in class, and there was my downfall.
After taking other Bio Professors, I wish Walguarnery taught more! He explains the subject better than any person or professor I've met. The power points ARE the study guides, if you go to class and make flash cards or notes from his slides, you can't miss a thing. He was born to teach the subject for sure. He makes a hard subject seem so easy.
The tests are reasonable, but you have to study for them. You can go to his office hours if you need more clarification or questions. Also, there's a "study session lecture" with the entire class before the exam.
No curve. Tests not cumulative. Manageable power points. One of his tips is to come back to your notes later in the day which you should actually do because his questions really makes you apply the information he taught.
Easy Class, Straight Forward, Just Read off the slides!
Justin is very knowledgeable of the material, just study the slides and what he emphasizes in class. The lecture has 2 midterms and a final and your grade depends solely on these. The lab has quizzes on some days as well as 4 practicum-style exams on anatomy. Dissect sharks, cats, lampreys, etc. Your grade depends heavily on the exams, so study!
One of the coolest and nicest professors I've had. Easy to follow powerpoints with helpful iClicker questions.
His lectures are based off of his slideshow. He reads of the slides in the class but then posts the slideshow online - it became almost pointless to show up to class since all the information is online. He was very monotone! He uses iclicker (which is how you get participation points from going to class). However, this class is based off of exams.
Professor Walguarnery was one of the best professors that I have had at UH Manoa! I have taken his BIOL 171, BIOL 172, and BIOL 265 lectures, and I have gotten a grade of A-, A, and A-. He does a good job of lecturing because he explains the content very well and if you are confused, he will clarify and is also available after class.
He's a good teacher. Attendance is mandatory for the pop quizzes. He claims his exams are simple, but you really need to understand the concepts to get the question correct, not just memorizing. Got a nice body, so sit close enough to hear him, but far enough to not see his muscles. Haha. They're mesmerizing.
Biology is an intensive course but he made it easy to understand! His main objective is for his students to understand and pass his class with an A. Exams are easy. If you don't understand the material, ask questions in class because he will further go into detail and explain until you understand. Recommend taking this course during the summer.
You'll understand what Dr. Justin is talking about. He does PPT presentations during lecture and that's what you're getting tested on, but it is very helpful to read the corresponding chapter. He makes it easy to understand, however. Have something to record him during lectures because what he says makes the material easier to understand.
He is a nice professor, his lecture makes sense. But when it comes to the exam, there are some tricky questions, or something he didn't really emphasize during the class. He does not curve for Bio265!! You need to get solid 90 above to get an A, but he has many extra credit opportunities. Just work hard, and you will get an A.
Professor Wallgainz is great. In-class iClicker participation free points. The online homework through mastering biology is very easy. The three exams match the powerpoints he posts on laulima. Showing up to class, doing the homework, and reviewing the powerpoints before exams should notch you a solid grade.
Good at teaching this intro to biology class. Lecture slides are nice and clear and he only tests on what he writes on the slide so reading the textbook isnt necessary. Very clear grading criteria with points in online HW and lecture attendance graded by clicker points. Exams were wordy and bit confusing but not too bad.
Good professor but very monotone, I fell asleep a couple of times in class. Grade is based off 3 tests which aren't cumulative. Gives 5% grade boost for iclicker participation. Has a very nice grading scale.
Really easy to follow in class and really easy online homework. If you missed class, the powerpoints are posted online. Super flexible for meetings outside class and missing exams. Unfortunately have to dump money in an iClicker and Mastering. Only part that stings is that the tests are 90% of your grade. In the end, he wants everyone to pass!
Walguarnery is the best professor I've had so far here at UH Manoa. He provides his Powerpoints online, and those function as your study guides for the entirety of the course. If you have any questions he's very open with his office hours and encourages students to ask questions in class. His influence is the reason I chose to major in biology.
Its very obvious Justin really cares about his students, unfortunately his lectures are really boring. BUT if you go you get an extra 5% on your gpa, and you only need an 85% to get an A-. Hes always willing to meet to help out students, really nice guy.
Justin is an AWESOME professor! He really cares about his students and definitely changed my way of thinking when it comes to studying. Class is a little tough but he definitely gives you lots of opportunities to get help and really wants you to succeed in the course! Literally the best professor I've had..5 years at UHM.
He makes complex concepts easier to understand. He really cares that his students pass and understand the material, always takes his time to explain core ideas. Accessible to questions and very approachable.
If youre taking BIO 171, you should definitely try to get Walguarnery. It is very clear that he cares about students understanding the concepts. He is NOT one of those professors that is just trying to make a point that science is hard. If you study and ask questions you will get an A and actually learn something, which is uncommon at UH.
He's a solid choice as a professor for sure, but if you don't pay attention during his lectures you will have a lot more difficulty with the test material. His tests are not that bad, but his lectures really will have an impact on your score.
He's a real chill prof & cares about the topic & his students, but, lectures are quite dry & mundane. I didn't like his teaching style as well. Exams are MC & open ended. Book isn't necessary but will help b/c some of the exam questions are on things he never touched on. 80% of grade is on 4 exams, 5% on group work and 15% on final presentation.
He was my favorite bio professor and is clearly very passionate about the topic. He explains things clearly, although lectures can be long and boring sometimes. However he says "if you're gonna take one thing from this class it's ___" on many different concepts. But overall he is a great professor who wants to see his students learn
He was a decent professor but something about his teaching style didn't mesh with my learning style. He covered all the important information but I was very bored and skipped class occasionally. I can see why some people would love him as a teacher, but I personally would not take his class again unless I absolutely had to.
The material got dry sometimes and he went a little too fast at times but he graded things fairly and kept most of the classes interesting and engaging. Paying attention in class is important because the test material is based on what is covered in class.
EXAM HEAVY, BEWARE!! Since this was an online class, all 3 exams, and quizzes were all online. 3 Exams worth 80% of grade. 10% participation. 10% quizzes. Exams had 15 MC and 5 Short Answers. Quizzes had 4-5 questions each, about 10+ quizzes total. If you are not good at exams, do not take this class. He is a tough grader on short answers. Study.
I took this over the summer online. Every MWF we had to read lecture slides and textbook then respond to a discussion on laulima. The syllabus said there would also be masteringbio hw and 1 page report due every MWF, but it was only assigned about half the time. There were three exams( 1 hour limit, 1/2 MC, 1/2 short answer). Just do the work!
Justin is a really great professor. His lectures tell you exactly what you need to know for exams. Quizzes were due every other day and the exams are not cumulative. As long as you keep up with his lectures and assigned textbook readings you'll be fine. His exams and quizzes were timed. 1 hour limit for his exams and 15 minutes for his quizzes.
Loved this teacher! First lecture slide included some details about him so he we could establish more of a personal connection with him. He makes all of his lecture slides, quizzes, and exams, and I didn't have to pay fees for textbooks or any other materials. He also communicates well with his students and kept us informed on due dates.
Took his online course this semester because of all the good ratings he had and did not learn a single thing. This class is basically self-taught because all he does is gives you lecture slides and expects you to learn the information on your own. The exams are ridiculously hard, no study guide, and covers way to many chapters for one exam (5-7 ch)
I bet he is an amazing professor in person like the other reviewers say... just don't take his online class. It is a 100% self teaching class and he makes you read 200 blog posts. You have to enter into Laulima and spend time reading every post because he tracks how long you look at each topic.
I took him because of the good rating. I only have a final exam left and I feel like I have learned nothing from the lesson slides he provides but more from Youtube. Be ready to self teach yourself with exam 100x harder. Test is worth 70% of grade.
I have heard that professor Walguarnery is an exceptional professor in person, and while I didn't mind him online I feel like it could have been better. He never "lectured" but instead just put slides up for the students to read. I would have liked classes to be over zoom so I could understand and get to know Justin better.
Do not let his rate my professor ratings fool you because he is an overall terrible professor. He is overall a knowledgeable but his lecture slides are not helpful at all in preparing for his exams. To add, his lectures are always rushed and materials are poorly explained . This class is exam heavy, worth 70% of your entire grade.
Took him for BIOL470 and his exams are outrageous, his slides provide little information and he expects his students to read 40-50 pages chapters after every class. I dont think I have learned anything from him other than through the book. Beware, his free response questions are incomprehensible. Not to mention, his exams are especially tough.
I have never encountered a professor so condescending, especially of those with academic adjustments, until I took this class. 70 percent of your grade are from exams. Expects students to read over 300+ forum posts each module to "study," of 3, and only gives slides. Auwe! Exams free-response questions worth 10 points each (3 Q's). Never recommend.
Justin is a great professor; friendly, accessible, + knowledgeable. This course was one of the most interesting courses that I have ever taken, HOWEVER there are only three grades total - one for each of three exams (33% each). If reading a textbook, memorizing info, and reciting it on a proctored exam is not for you, don't take this course.
the WORST! absurd amount of writing, topics are too advanced for ONE credit intro level bio course. hasn't graced us with his presence once, TA is teaching the class, TA's awesome, but the course is awful. labs are easy/fun, but again, abusurd amount of writing, this class makes me want to quit school, what a great prof.
He presents his topics in an interesting ways and explains them with impressive example. The lectures are super interesting but you do not necessarily have to attend the lectures as he also uploads all the important information. The exams are multiple choice. You do have to study for them but they are fair and not to much. Highly recommended!
For lectures, he just explains the slides. There are only 3 tests and "the slides are the study guide." There are over 1000 slides per test and a wide range of topics. I read the book, studied all the slides, went to every lecture, and didn't do well on the tests. He encouraged questions but just ignored people's hands. I would not take him again!
The way he cared about teaching was extremely evident. He would encourage and answer any questions that were asked. Truly a great teacher, lecturer, and scientist. I am honestly very excited to have him again next semester.
This class is graded mainly around the exams with some HW assignments to boost your grade. Tests are MC and everything you need to know for it is covered in the lecture and textbook, study and you can pass. You wont miss much if you dont attend class because its mostly just whats on the slides, but he's nice to look at if you do go.
Took this class Spring 2023. Professor Walguarnery is a very chill dude (gives off MAJOR surfer dude vibe). If you took Biology back in High School, this is a review class with a step further in specific structures in the cells. Go over Macromolecules, Cell components, a little bit of chemistry, photosynthesis, DNA and genes, and evolution. 3 exams
There are only 3 exams and the slides in lecture are the study guide. This class has a lot to memorize from plants and animals to their specific phylogeny. You need to study 15 to 45 minutes a day. I have been bad at this, hence the poor grade. It's hard to know what exactly will be on the exam :/
Most of your grade will be based on the 3 exams that are all scantron (multiple choice). Posts lecture slides ahead of time, goes over them during class. Answers every question anybody asks. Usually able to end class early after covering all content. Very clear, tells you what will be on the exams. Just study your notes. No cumulative final.
He doesn't allow electronic notes but he knows the material and conveys it in a way that makes sense. He posts lesson slides and offers a few extra credit assignments. He doesn't do + or - grades which is weird to me so make sure you do super well because the difference between an A and a B is a hard cutoff.
