No clear grading criteria; not very respectful of other students' comments. He tries though.
Lectures were engaging - lots of discussion. He really cares about the students. If you go to class and do the readings, you won't have any trouble getting a good grade. I would highly recommend him!
Great professor, especially considering how young he is. You can tell he cares for students, the material. The lectures can be dry at times; but he does a good job of explaining concepts with a sense of humor. Grading criteria could be more clear, but I'm sure he'll improve that within a year or so. I'd take him again only once he addresses that.
The lectures were generally interesting enough and it wasn't a super difficult course load, but the difficult part about it all is the professor's lack of organization. It is difficult to know when things are actually due and he doesn't follow the syllabus very closely in assignments. Show up at class sometimes and you find out something was due.
Prof. White is a really good guy with good intentions, but he's really disorganized. There were so many times when the majority of the class didn't know an assignment was due, and we just found out about it class the day it was due. He's really passionate about philosophy, but I wouldn't say he's very good at explaining complex subjects.
I am a political science major and I have never taken a philosophy class in my life, but I was pleasantly surprised in how much I enjoyed the class, and I always felt it was a great environment to learn in. Professor White didn't treat me any differently because I knew little about philosphy. He was very respectful and inspiring. He loves his job.
very disorganized, he uses his own form of a syllabus that he loosely uses, this makes turning in assignments and keeping up difficult. he doesn't use powerpoints so note taking is almost impossible. you write papers and they aren't too hard. he is nice but not very merciful. he takes attendance so that is annoying seeing that we are adults.
TONS of papers. Very disorganized. Syllabus and LS schedule didn't match up. Grading harshly. He expects to have perfect philosiphical backgrouds. I took this class simply because it is a 100 level class and to fulfill graduation requirements. It should be easy, but NO. I am a 3.91 student, I think I can comment how hard this is. Believe it or not
Very good at facilitating discussion. He really knows his stuff so if you're serious about philosophy, take classes from him. He's also extremely accessible and is truly genuine about his students being successful. If you're taking a class from him just because you need a general filled, realize that philosophy is inherently difficult.
Professor White makes philosophy class what college should be. I loved the discussions we had and I learned a ton. I didn't buy the book (I just borrowed it from another student) and I was still able to get all of the homework done. The tests can be tough, but if you study you'll do great. He'll help you prepare well. Professor White rocks!
This course was Philosophy of Law, and White's class was very different from other Phil Law courses. The course focused primarily on philosophical theories of agency and responsibility rather than legal theory. However, the course introduced important writers in the legal philosophy conversation (Dworkin, Hart) that are crucial to jurisprudence.
Memorized all our names. Tried to get the class engaged in discussion. Would challenge our ideas to try to help us create more sound personal ideas. He was fair with grading, but the TA I had was not helpful - don't worry, I think he graduated. Professor White great. The TA Miserable. Recommended him to every person signing up for Philosophy.
I took this class to fulfill a general and really enjoyed the class. There is a decent amount of reading, but the professor spends each class going over the reading and clearly explains the hard concepts. There are four or five 2-3 page papers to do that will take some time, but as long as you pay attention in class you will do fine.
Professor White was one of my favorite General Ed. Professors I have ever had. He took the time to learn everyone's name and really cared for each of the students. This class involves lots of discussion. The readings may be kind of confusing but Professor White alway explains them in an understandable way. I would recommend him to anyone!
You'll be hard pressed to find a professor more interested in developing a relationship with the students than Dr. White. He's knowledgable in his field of study, but not in a way that makes you feel dumb for having questions. He's willing to admit mistakes, and really tries to learn from his students. I highly recommend taking his classes. Do it.
If I had to ever take another Philosophy class I wouldn't want it to be taught by anyone but him. I struggle with writing a lot so the fact that there is a good amount of writing made me worried I wouldn't do well in the clas. But he met with me personally a few times and was very interested in making sure I was learning and was very understanding.
Great professor and great guy- he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Very approachable if you need help outside class. Lots of reading, which can be pretty dry at times, but he does a good job of explaining the hard concepts in class. Quite a few papers, but the tests aren't too bad.
Dr White likes to use class time to review and clarify ideas from reading and to incite lively discussion. Its a philosophy class so argue using logic not feelings or personal beliefs and you will do great. Dr. White is reasonable and the class is an interesting introduction to philosophy ideas. We wrote about 4, 4-page papers duting the semester.
I could tell that he cared about our learning and success. Time and effort need to be put in to learn the material and write the papers, but I enjoyed the his lectures, jokes, analogies and explanation of the material. He is understanding and receptive to questions and what its like to be a student.
I really liked Prof. White's PHIL 110 class. We had engaging class discussions every day, and the reading was interesting. When the text was difficult to understand, Prof. White was able to simply and clearly explain the important points. The papers were tough sometimes, but I felt like they were important for understanding the topics.
For Jurisprudence, Prof. White was awesome. His lectures were very loosely structured, which allowed for a lot of discussion which I found interesting. There is TON of reading and a TON of writing, that's all it is, just five small papers and one big paper at the end, and one midterm. If you're a Philosophy major, it's nothing new.
If you are considering an introduction class to philosophy, take it from Professor White without a doubt. Although the content for philosophy classes is often heavy, he has a way of explaining it in very easy to understand examples. He is objective and kind and clearly very invested in his students and the material. A+ professor.
Professor White is easily my favorite Professors at BYU. If you have to take PHIL 110 for a general, you should definitely take it from him! He is really passionate about philosophy and his enthusiasm is contagious. I actually found myself looking for ward to his class. He gives meaningful feedback on all papers and really cares about his students.
Prof White has an Awesome Teaching Style! The class was structured well But if we ever wanted to dive into anything deeper we could. His classes are how all Philosophy classes should be. More Discussion. Less lecture/in class reading. He also was available outside of classes too for help or just general talking Highly Recommend His Classes!
He explained clearly some things I had always wondered about. He's smart and he's thorough. I never felt like my time was wasted on meaningless assignments.
LOVED this class. Prof White was just awesome; he was very good at explaining difficult ideas from the reading, too. Discussions were insightful, and I learned a lot of valuable skills in this class! Seriously. It's an easy A, as long as you attend class, participate, and do the readings (which aren't that bad). Definitely recommend Prof White!
there was writing from the main topics covered in class but if you pay attention its super easy! really nice guy that gets you thinking, i still talk to him when i pass him in the halls, not just about phil. personable.
Prof. White is easily one of the most down to earth professors at BYU. He will do anything to help the students. He is patient and really understands what it is like to be a student. He is young and really chill. You do need to put forth effort to do well, but it is completely bearable and he makes the topics really interesting. Lecture was great!!
Professor White is not only one of my favorite professors, he is an awesome guy. Do the reading, come to class, and you will have a great semester. He tries hard to be a fair grader, but he will definitely help if you reach out to him. Participate in class, the lectures are really fun when people participate!
I felt like this class wasn't as difficult as other generals I have taken at BYU. Professor White did really well at facilitating discussion and ALWAYS allowed opportunities for students to meet and chat with him. If you listen during the discussion you'll do fine on the tests. The writing isn't hard unless you couldn't care less.
Take an introductory philosophy course from Professor White. He's friendly and personable and explains heavy content in a clear way. There was a lot of reading, but that's the nature of the course. The class was paced well and I never felt like I couldn't keep up. He learns everybody's names and is approachable if you have questions.
Prof White is one of my favorite professors by far. His class was pretty easy if you put in the work. The tests are straightforward if you pay attention in class, he's a fair grader, the paper prompts are clear, and he gives study guides that prepare you for the test. He's also a great human being and tries to foster friendships with his students.
Prof White is really clear in class about the topics covered and instead of just presenting a topic he discusses it in detail using examples. Some reading but you cover all of the assigned reading in class. Exams were mostly essay based but if you could present and defend a topic you could get a solid grade.
Professor White's class was one of my favorite GEs that I took at BYU. Though I didn't have any background in philosophy, I found it was easy to succeed if you came to class, took notes during lectures, and kept up with the readings. Tests and essays were always straightforward.
Professor White's intro to philosophy was one of my favorite classes I've taken in my college career. He is very caring and invested in his students. The assignments he gives are fair and he always explains them thoroughly. I learned a lot in this class and would definitely recommend this class to everyone.
I took Philosophy of Law from Professor White. He did a great job at helping you understand the complex readings and relates them to everyday situations. He is very approachable and genuinely cares for your progress. It was refreshing having a professor who was so approachable yet knowledgeable.
This was a class that I always enjoyed coming to because of how good his lectures are. There was a lot of room for discussion, and when I did I felt like I actually contributed something. There are a good handful of papers, but I generally enjoyed writing them and felt he was a fair grader.
He is nice and an understanding teacher.
Professor White is awesome! He gives clear grading criteria and lectures are usually interesting. There is a little bit of reading, and there are a few papers, but he is clear on what he wants from you. He's very willing to help you improve and you can get definitely get an A in his class! I would definitely take another class from him!
I loved Professor White! If I ever hear someone wants to take Philosophy for a GE I always recommend him. Class discussions were so fun and interesting.
Prof. White is a great professor! He was so kind and really cares about student's learning and growth more than just about getting assignments done. In class discussions are always fun and insightful. I feel I gained so much from this class intellectually and as a person in general. The assignments took some time, but they were totally worth it. :D
Dr White is awesome! One of my favorites. If you do the work and argue your points well, there's no reason you can't succeed. I've never had a more caring professor. It's very clear that he wants the best for his students. He never told me what to think, but taught me how to think for myself. I love this guy!
Dr. White is passionate about Phil and helping his students succeed in class and beyond. He infuses his passion in his lectures and helps concepts and other key elements to stick. At times he was disorganized (which isn't out of the norm for Phil teachers), but he's willing to work things out with his students.
Too many readings. Unclear schedule. Many papers. Hard to get good grades.
Doctor White is the best. I did not want to take philosophy at all. I had no intentions of liking it and I was not excited to take the class at all. There was a fair, in both senses of the word, amount of homework but that's expected. His tests aren't bad and, if your classmates aren't boring the class discussions are very interesting.
Dr. White is cares about each student. There is a lot of reading, but it is an introductory philosophy course, so that should be expected. If you miss class, you'll regret it because 1)Classroom discussions were enlightening and I enjoyed having a lot of perspectives to learn from, 2)just reading won't give you enough to go on for papers and tests.
Great professor. The lectures are very engaging and will definitely change your life if you let it.
Dr White gives his workday and teaching everything he's got. He and TA offer phenomenal feedback consistently and regularly. The way to an A is very clear. It is a great GE that will improve the way you think and write. I highly suggest taking it as a GE. It is rather simple to get a good grade. He's not out to make it difficult.
Professor White is great. He is genuinely interested in the success of each of his student. He gives great feedback on essays which if you follow you will do well. Tests aren't too bad either. Just try to learn the basic concepts and you will do great.
Great professor that really runs his class like a graduate seminar. Great insights, great structure, and he really sets the class up as if we are all learning together. It was my first real philosophy class (I took the class through the political science department jurisprudence course), but it was super enjoyable and informative.
Dr. White was excellent and accessible. One of the few professors that I felt actually valued student comments and input during class discussions.
Prof White is an amazing guy. Incredibly funny, caring, and smart. The class is super interesting, and definitely will make you start to think differently. If you want to get a good grade, take notes on whatever he specifically writes down or talks about in class, come to class, and go the TA multiple times for each paper. Tests are graded easily.
Great guy. Lots of reading material so be prepared to read and then talk about it in class.
Dr. White was by far one of my favorite professors at BYU. You have to keep up on the homework, and do the readings, but they aren't too long. I maybe spent 30 minutes to and hour between classes doing the homework. The classes are great because it is set up to learn together, rather than to just have him lecture. He's great at helping you get an A
I really enjoyed his lectures! I have always thought philosophy to be interesting, and this course really helped me expand my idea of what philosophy is and the role that it plays in my life. You definitely need to work with the TA's and Professor White on the papers to make sure that you are headed down the right path.
Professor White gives great, interesting lectures, is good at explaining things, and lets the class have a lot of discussion. His grading is pretty subjective though so you have to work a lot with him and the TA on papers and getting ready for exams to know what he wants.
Professor White is the most caring and accommodating professor that I have met during my education at BYU. He challenges students in a good way, and facilitates thought provoking discussions every class. He is someone that I admire not only as a professor and mentor, but as a person. He genuinely cares about his students.
Professor White was amazing! He made me fall in love with Philosophy. He gives a great lecture that makes you truly enjoy what you're learning. The readings are awesome, too. Sometimes there are dense and a little difficult to understand but he always explains them in class. Amazing class, amazing professor.
Professor White is stellar! Very thought provoking and inspiring guy with really rich, interesting material and life experience. Highly recommend studying with him for a series of engaging, expansive lectures.
My time here was a waste. Every class period is a one-sided discussion that is mind-numbingly dull and has no relation to your grade. Professor White is like the Elder's Quorum instructor who forgot to prepare a lesson--he shows up late and makes it up on the spot. A nice person, a lackluster professor.
Professor White always comes into class with a smile and in a peppy mood! He doesn't care if you don't have a background of philosophy and always considers your comments in discussion and doesn't make you feel stupid about any of your thoughts. He gives you the tools to succeed if you do the readings, assignments, and try on the papers.
Dr. White was a great teacher, I loved his class and he made philosophy make sense which it before was sometimes confusing. Great class and great teacher, I felt like I learned a lot but it wasn't stressful like most classes with lots of material.
I really like Professor White! His grading is based on attendance (10%), easy reading quizzes (10%) essays and tests (short answer/essay format). There are 4 essays, a midterm (short ans only), and a final essay/exam, so few things cushion your grade. His TA is accessible and I wish I had gone to him more for essay feedback before submission.
I wasn't too sure of Dr. White to begin with, but I learned to enjoy his class more and more as the semester went on. I learned a lot in his class, much more than I was expecting to. You need to do the reading and come to class, but if you do everything and get it in on time, this is a wonderful introductory class to philosophy.
Dr. White is an awesome professor overall. He really knows the content and is super funny. I struggled a lot this past semester and he took the time to help me catch up and made it possible for me to pass. I'm so glad I took his class! There is a LOT of reading and assignments pretty much every class so just stay on top of things and you'll be fine
Prof. White was awesome! It's a GE class so I wasn't too excited to take philosophy, but he made philosophy interesting and relatable! Granted there were a couple of boring sections and writing papers is not my thing, but I genuinely enjoyed our in class discussions. I hope he keeps teaching this course, I hear other classes aren't so great.
I'm a business major, and I took PHIL 110 as a GE. I saw Dr. White had good ratings, so I figured "what the heck, let's do it." I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this class. Dr. White encourages meaningful discussion and helped me think about philosophy in a positive way I had never considered. Would highly recommend his class.
Professor White is great. He is passionate about the material and really wants the students in the class to succeed. His lectures are brilliant, they are a mix of just normal lecture and class interaction. Its kind of like a big conversation. They are very engaging and a great way to learn.
There is nobody more fitting to teach a class on ethics, morality, and what it means to live a meaningful life than Dr. Justin White. He practices what he preaches and he truly cares about his students. I can't emphasize that enough. In this class, you'll improve your critical thinking, writing, and speaking abilities. TAKE THIS CLASS!
I didn't quite enjoy the class, but that has nothing to do with Professor White. He is one of the most caring, sympathetic professors I have ever met. He really cares about the students, and pushes back due dates when the class is struggling. He teaches very clearly, but I didn't understand any of the assigned readings until I came to class.
Professor White is the BEST. He combines lectures with really deep analogies that make you think, but is always cheerful and kind. If you are struggling, he is super understanding so don't be afraid to talk to him. TAKE HIS CLASS, you won't regret it!
Loved this class so much. Justin's a great guy and so nice. Great teacher too, would suggest him to anyone and everyone.
Professor White was absolutely my favorite professor. He provides easy to understand lectures and the discussions he facilitates in class are often very insightful. I also corresponded with him outside of class a few times regarding other classes and he was always friendly and eager to help. Anyone that has the chance should take a class from him.
Professor White runs a philosophy class how they are meant to be run. He helps you to first understand the ideas and then lets you develop your own opinions and ideas. The papers were relatively easy. Although I am a good writer, I feel like he gave a better grade than I deserved. Fun class and not too difficult.
There is quite of bit of reading for this class; however, it is worth it. I learned a lot from this class that is actually applicable to life. And he works with the class. He cares about each individual and is flexible. If you want a class that is not stressful, but you learn a lot, this is the class.
Professor White does a great job at explaining philosophical concepts, I loved his class. I learned a lot. He cares a lot about his students
What a good dude. I always enjoy talking with Justin, and I can tell he's interested in how things are going in my life outside of school. His class is definitely worth taking whether you're just getting started in the major or are starting to take upper-division courses.
Not super respectful of students comments, I feel like he shut people down a lot when they discussed what they think. Pretty one-sided.
Prof. White is great. He knows his stuff and is happy to talk with students about questions and ideas. I emailed him with questions over the summer and he was happy to reply. His lectures can feel scatterbrained, but I still did fine in the class and understood the material after working through it. An important class to take, and he's a good guy.
This is the teacher who has you watch the Good Place and discuss it in class. It's pretty great. I thought Professor White was a lot of fun, the readings weren't too much, he has you write five papers total but you have some flexibility about your prompt. He's an easy grader, I bet you'll enjoy the class.
He's ok, but assigns a ton of reading. Not very organized, and you are always confused on what he requires of you. He tries to really get to know you- he knew everyone's names in class. That being said, I'm generally an A student, but because I didn't understand what he required and I felt a bit of unfair grading coupled with that I got a B+
I absolutely loved this class and Prof. White. He is so realistic and funny. Your grade is mostly on 4 papers, but they aren't very long. The final was 4 pages double spaced and that was the longest one. He understands it's an intro course, and is willing to adjust earlier paper grades if you show progress so that your grade reflects that.
The lack of clear expectations in this class makes this class unbearable. No rubrics with point values are given and every time anyone asks a questions or talks in class they are seen as wrong. It is hard to talk philosophy if no debates are allowed. The structure of the class is also unbearable as he mostly doesn't use slides, nothing is online.
Cares about his students, he notices when you are there in class. He takes role every day so make sure you go. There are a lot of readings for this class but then again, it is a philosophy class. I do feel that some of the readings could be condensed. This was a hard class though and took up a lot of my time. Use the TAs, they grade your papers.
He was one of the rudest professors I have ever had. He would shut down students' comments and make them feel stupid. His lectures were all over the place and usually extremely unhelpful. He focused a lot more on the literary elements of the texts than the actual philosophy. The amount of assigned reading was crazy for how dense it was.
professor white is a good professor and he makes class generally interesting and entertaining. he can be a little bit abrupt in the way he responds to questions or concerns so just be aware of that. it has been brought to his attention, and he seems to genuinely care and want to do better. is willing to help you be successful. tough-ish grader.
Professor White is a funny and upbeat guy. Most assignments in the class are pretty easy to score well on so long as you do the readings. The papers did seem to be graded pretty intensely and felt slightly unproportionally graded compared to the weekly writing assignments. To enjoy this class you have to be engaged otherwise it can be boring.
I really respect Dr. White. He's accessible outside of class and patient and helpful when you don't understand something. He's understanding of personal situations as long as you let him know. Genuinely loves teaching. There's a fair amount of homework that adds up. Don't procrastinate the papers. Do the readings. Class is largely discussion-based.
Professor White is a great teacher because he is clear in his expectations and tells students how to be successful in his class. He expects you to be a responsible adult. He teaches the material well and if you pay attention during class you will be just fine.
Dr. White is an incredible professor who cares about his students and his classes. He is willing to work with you outside of class to discuss exams, papers, or other interests in philosophy. The class does require that you keep up with the reading and really engage with the text(s), but once again, Dr. White is there to help you and discuss things.
I love Dr. White's classes. For personal reasons, I couldn't finish this class, but Dr. White was incredibly caring and offered support to help me succeed. He is willing to meet with you outside of class to discuss your paper and other interests. I highly recommend taking a class from Dr. White. He's an amazing professor and a great person to know.
I love Professor White! The class is very discussion based, and he does a good job explaining the concepts and answering questions. He's very accessible and willing to help, and I feel like he genuinely cares about his students. This was a class I looked forward to every week, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
Professor White puts lots of effort into his curriculum. He's funny, quick-witted, and quick to challenge statements. It may seem harsh, but it's a good practice in philosophy and he's always very nice about it! Writing-centric class; is a good opportunity to practice those skills weekly. Plenty of reading, but it's all interesting and well-chosen!
He knows his students by name. Being a philosophy class, there are a lot of readings due each class period. I think they could have been condensed. It was hard to ask questions and not feel slightly inferior. He is willing to meet during office hours. I understand philosophy may be a hard subject to teach. Constantly reading or writing.
A funny and great professor. The class is mostly discussion-based with some lecturing. I enjoyed the class a lot. Professor White cares about his class and the topics, and he knows every student's name. I recommend taking a class from him
Professor White is a great guy, and he genuinely cares about this class. However, it's incredibly challenging to get a good grade in Philosophy 110, which is a GE 100 level class. There are four papers, but the grading criteria seem contradictory and not represented on the rubric. Emailing him appears as though it's a burden. TA was very good.
For those who say the grading was harsh, I disagree. Professor White is open to talking about your papers beforehand and will give you good feedback. He is caring and wants to help you succeed but you need to make the effort to seek help
I LOVED this class!! Prof White cares about his students and the topics are super interesting. We talked about living a meaningful life and we got to watch The Good Place. Super fun class and you learn a lot! Prof. White is one the best professors i've had so far. His lectures are good and he throws in jokes and knows how to make the class engaging
Each time I've taken his classes I'm impressed with the depth and breadth of his knowledge on the material, willingness to work closely with students on their papers and advise on academic/career goals. He is deeply invested in each student's success. Class is discussion-based— he does close guided readings of certain texts rather than powerpoints!
Dr. White is wonderful! He is always welcoming and kind. He wants the best for his students. He keeps readings manageable, but also encourages us to research on our own to learn more about our interests. He will do all he can to make sure that you do well in the course. I highly recommend taking his classes!
Professor White is a good professor and the way he teaches and runs his class is fair. I believe that the 1-3 star reviews are far too negative. The papers and the readings are time-consuming, and he is generally too harsh of a grader for a general class, almost nobody gets above 94% on any assignment minus rare circumstances. His Ta's are helpful.
I think the negative reviews for this class are way too harsh. Prof. White explains what he wants and will give outlines for the papers. Expectations are fair as long as you actually attend class and pay attention. If you do the readings and pay attention, you'll probably do fine. And you can talk with Prof. White or the TAs for help.
This is one of my favorite classes so far! You can do well in the class if you put in the work. Dr. White and the TAs are willing to help. You're expected to write four papers and then the final. There are weekly reflections too. Keep up with the readings and the class is manageable. I recommend this class to everyone. Super fun topics!
Justin White is the Best! He does a class around "The Good Place" which makes philosophy so much more understandable and accessible. I am so grateful I got to take his class, I learned and gained so much from what he taught me :)
Harder than I anticipated for a 110 level class. Grading was a major issue. No rubrics for the 4 papers and final paper. Following outlines still didn't guarantee a high grade(>93%). What really bothered me is he repeatedly ask us to leave positive reviews in class and multiple emails, trying to manipulate feedback to counteract the low reviews.
I really enjoyed this class. I've never taken a philosophy class but he did a great job at making the topics applicable to my life. The grading is a bit harsh but he offeres extra credit and tries to help you to end the class with a good grade. If you work with the TA and try to follow the criteria he gives you should have no problem getting an A.
I really liked him! I was nervous to take this class at first, but I ended up liking the class and did better than I thought. There are three papers, two exams, and weekly readings and reflections. It is a lot of reading and writing, but definitely manageable. He was really good about giving feedback and wants to make sure you do well in the class.
It is easy to do well. There is a TON of reading. 3 essays, 2 exams, weekly reflections. Never provided a rubric for essays, so everything was graded arbitrarily. I would get 2 comments on my essay and then an 84?? He says hE nEvEr HaNdS oUt an A. Nice guy and interesting topics, but an unorganized class. We frequently got behind schedule.
The actual class period was engaging and often interesting, but I spent more time outside of class on the homework than anticipated. Lots of reading and writing. The course felt a bit unorganized, and the grading criteria wasn't always clear.
Creates a very engaging environment that is enlightening even if you do not have a concerted interest in philosophy. Hilarious, excellent at answering questions, very strong at explaining difficult concepts. Lots of reading, three essays, but it could be a lot worse. Offers chance to improve grade over thesemester. Midterm and final not bad at all.
